November 9th, 2023
I know I haven't posted a lot in this year, or last year, for that matter. Lots of death and personal things have been going on, and I never really feel up to writing outside of poems that reflect my inner thoughts.
I'm not quite sure how long this motivation will last, but I wanted to thank everyone for being here anyway.
And if you've been here since the beginning, you get an extra gold star!
You've seen my cringe writing, the golden era of 2020 amongus, movie nights, hiatus, and now you've seen my return.
Life has it's ups and downs, but I learned that it's best to just like time do it's thing until you're ready again.
I'm not really good at giving pep talks or advice, but I'm always here for anyone that needs a quick comfort headcanon or just a quick laugh with me.
I love you guys.

Eddie had a problem. You.
Who knew that a seemingly sweet young woman like you was also selling drugs on the side? Eddie didn't have a problem with you selling; he has a problem with you stealing his buyers. He's been trying for weeks now to beat you and all his efforts seem to be failing. Failing because, for one, you were quick, and two he really liked you. So much so that he couldn't bring himself to beat you at your own game.
You're not stupid though. You knew Eddie was trying to get your buyers. You'd finish a sale and there he'd stroll in. The cute smile on his face the moment he sees you, fell into a deep frown. You smirked up at him, waving the money in the air briefly before winking and rushing off. Now, you have a problem. Eddie. From the months you've run into him, you've may or may not have been growing feelings for the metalhead. But, you weren't going to let him know that. You had a game to play.
~~~
"Thank you." You replied, taking the money and the kid, maybe seventeen or sixteen nodded, before leaving with his weed.
Leaning against the picnic table, you counted the money in your hand until you heard a voice.
"Oh, come on. Really, Y/N?" It was Eddie, looking absolutely pissed.
You blinked up at him as he walked over to you, crossing his arms. "What's wrong? I thought you wanted me to steal my customers?" You replied with a smirk.
Eddie huffed and rolled his eyes. "No, that's the opposite. Could you stop stealing my customers?"
"Some of us have to make some money, Eds," You shrugged, stuffing the small wad of cash in your black jeans pockets.
Eddie groaned and rubbed his face with his hands, "Yeah, and I need to make something too, dude."
You laughed and looked up at him, "So, what are you going to do about it, handsome?" You smirked up at him, crossing your arms.
Eddie blushed bright red, saying nothing.
"That's what I thought." You spoke, rolling your eyes. "If you want to get a customer, beat me to it. Simple. Easy. Okay, Munson?" You asked in a somewhat baby voice, making Eddie look back at you.
"Yeah, sure. Whatever. I'll beat you next time." He spoke frustratedly, pointing a finger at you.
"I look forward to it."
~~~
For the next couple of weeks, Eddie made sure to arrive at the site way earlier than he usually did. But, it was all for not. You beat him every time. And, he was getting sick of it.
---
"Oh, sorry Eddie. You just missed them." You said unapologetically, pouting.
Eddie glared at you, growling slightly, "You know this isn't fair."
You gave him a wink, "Life isn't fair." You said before running off.
---
"Oopsie, miss them again. Really Eddie. You need to step up on your game." You teased as Eddie rushed up to the picnic table, slightly out of breath.
He leaned his hands on his knees, "You're the devil."
"I'll take that as a compliment." You called out over your shoulder as you left with a wave.
---
"Eddie, honey. Again? This is the... What?... Tenth time this month." You placed your hand on your hip.
"It's not my fault that you got here before me." Eddie huffed, pushing past you.
"Oh, yeah. Well, if you weren't such a lazy b-"
"You better watch your mouth, missy," Eddie growled, glaring down at you.
You gasped, placing your hand on your chest, "Did I finally hit a nerve?" You feigned shock.
Eddie grumbled something under his breath before walking away.
~~~
The next week you had a customer, you waited at the picnic bench with a smirk on your face as you waited for Eddie. Only for him not to show up. You frowned and pushed off the bench, walking out of the woodie area and walking around the school to the parking lot. There, Eddie threw his backpack into the side of his van before slamming it shut. Rushing over, you caught him before he left.
"Hey, Eddie. You missed them." You smirked.
Eddie turned to you with uninterested eyes, a frown on his face. "Oh, thanks, Y/N."
You scoffed, "Well, you should try harder, then. Just sayin'."
Eddie sighed and turned to walk away. "Whatever."
Eddie opened his van's door, but you pushed it back closed. Eddie looked down at you, glaring slightly. "What do you want, Y/N?"
"Why are you fighting back?" You asked, glaring up at the young man as you threw his hands in the air briefly.
"Why should I? You've won."
Your eyebrows furrowed, "I won?"
Eddie hummed, "Yep, now if you don't have anything else... I'd like to go home."
You were flabbergasted, stumbling over your words, "But... You're Eddie Munson. You never give up."
Eddie shook his head, "Guess you're wrong."
"Come on, Eddie. I'll even let you have the next one." You tried to convince him but that didn't seem to work.
Eddie huffed, "I'm good." he muttered under his breath.
You frowned, shocked, "Good? What? Eddie, why aren't you playing?"
Eddie finally turned to you, "I don't want to play anymore, Y/N. I'm done. I hate going over just to see you've taken my customer then for you to practically laugh in my face. I know it's some stupid game to you, but do you like pissing me off? Do you like how you make me feel bad? I can't keep doing this to myself."
Eddie's words struck you hard. You stood there in silence for what felt like forever. All the anger you had built up towards Eddie melted away as you realized everything he said.
"You're right." You whispered, biting down on your lip.
"Y/N..." Eddie called out, but you cut him off.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have treated you that way. It was wrong. I know we are both in this to make a living. I... I should've done that. I'm sorry." You took a step closer to him.
Eddie moved away from you, "You're tricking me," His voice cracked slightly.
"No, please, Eddie. I'm so sorry." You begged, tears threatening to spill over your cheeks.
"No. I won't fall for your lies temptress." Eddie spoke softly.
"Temptress?" You questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"I'm going home. Bye, Y/N." He spoke, getting to his van and driving off.
You watched as he drove away, feeling completely defeated. You sat on the curb, thinking hard. Soon enough, you had an idea.
~~~
Laying on his back on his bed, Eddie sighed, closing his eyes as he wallowed in self-pity and sadness. He was really upset. Yeah, he was upset about losing his customers to you, but now he was convinced that you didn't like him the way he liked you. If you did, why would you treat him that way? Why wouldn't you just tell him and not hide it? Maybe you didn't want him to know. That was a possibility. But, that wasn't it. No, you were playing a game with him. A game he didn't want to play anymore.
Eddie put his hands over his face before turning to the window. He stared outside at the night sky, thinking about you. How long has it been since you first met? Well, it'd probably been longer than he thought but still, more than a year ago. He always thought you were pretty, but he could never find the courage to talk to you. Only when he showed up late for the first time to a sale did he finally talk to you. And, that was when the game started. You annoyed him, stressed him out, and made him want to pull out his hair from time to time... But, he always forgave you. But, now, Eddie was just burned out.
His phone began to ring, and Eddie reluctantly got up to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hey, this Eddie?" A deep voice on the phone asked.
"Yeah, who's this?" He asked, narrowing his eyes.
There was a small pause before the person spoke, "No one. I need your help. I need some... Weeds for my garden. Ya know?"
Eddie couldn't help but chuckle, "Okay, sure. But, how did you hear about me?" He asked and the deep voice on the other side chuckled.
"I have my sources. Meet me in an hour. That picnic bench at the school." They replied before hanging up.
Eddie pulled the phone away, looking at it before putting it back on the hook, very confused yet excited.
Eddie pulled up at the school, the sky darkening as he parked his car and got out. It was already late, stars already in the sky. He knew he should go home instead of going to meet whoever this guy was, but he decided to anyway. As Eddie walked up to the picnic table, the person in question walked up to him. The stranger had their hood up, making it impossible to see their face.
Eddie fugeted in his spot nervously. This was sort of creepy.
"You... Uh... Are you the one that called?" Eddie asked and the unknown person pushed off the table, walking over.
"Yes." The voice spoke, making Eddie jump.
"Y/N?" Eddie asked, looking at the stranger in confusion.
Taking off your hood, you smiled up at Eddie timidly. "Hey, Eddie."
Eddie's eyes widened, "Did you take this customer too?" He exclaimed, angrily.
You shook your head, "No. I didn't." You confessed. "I called you. Well... I used my brother's voice." You explained.
"Why?" Eddie questioned, narrowing his eyes at you.
You looked down, "Because I... I wanted to talk to you." You admitted shyly, "When we first met, I thought you were cute..." You trailed off, looking down once more.
Eddie blinked rapidly, "You... Thought I was cute?" He questioned, stunned.
You nodded, "Yeah, well... Yeah." You whispered, clearing your throat loudly. "When I found out that you and I were in the same business, I thought this was the only way I could hang out with you... Even if it was for a couple of minutes. It was sort of worth it."
Eddie frowned slightly, sort of confused, "What? I'm confused..." He spoke.
You sighed, "I’m not good at expressing my feelings…” You ran your hand through your hair. “I really like you, a lot. And, I only stole your customers because then I got to see you. Even if you were annoyed by me, I was happy to just be around you."
Eddie tilted his head to the side, "So, you're saying you like me?" He asked and you blushed, nodding.
"You-You do?" Eddie stuttered, looking at you with wide eyes.
"A lot, yeah." You confessed shyly.
"But," Eddie started, looking away. "You don't like me, do you?" He asked quietly.
Your heart nearly stopped, "What?" You questioned, blinking rapidly.
Eddie turned back to look at you, "You're just playing a game."
You shook your head rapidly, "No, no, Eddie. I'm serious. I like you. This isn't another game. How can I prove it to you?" You practically begged, as Eddie looked at you hard.
"How... How can you prove it?" Eddie asked carefully.
"Well," You paused, trying to think of something. "Can I kiss you?"
Eddie stared at you for a moment, "How can you prove it by kissing me?" He asked, blushing.
You shrugged, "Well, I guess I'm just gonna have to figure it out." You told him, moving closer to him slowly and hesitantly. You were scared.
Eddie's eyes widened as you leaned forward and pressed your lips against Eddie's. Eddie froze, eyes wide before they slowly fluttered close. His heart was racing as he kissed back. Eddie deepened the kiss, pulling you closer to him as he wrapped his arms around you.
All he could think about was you.
Pulling away, you shared a smile with Eddie, "See? I told you I'm not playing games." You spoke, bringing your hand up to touch his cheek.
"You're not?" Eddie asked, tilting his head to the side.
"Of course not, Eddie!" You laughed, bringing his face back down to yours, resting your forehead on his. "I love you." You whispered, smiling brightly.
Eddie's eyes went wide again, "No... You don't mean that..." He spoke softly.
"I do." You smiled, brushing your fingers through his hair.
Eddie's heart was beating quickly, "You don't.." He trailed off, shaking his head.
You pulled away slightly, looking into Eddie's eyes, "I do." You repeated, staring into his eyes. "I've loved you since day one." You whispered, but before you could say anything more, Eddie kissed you hard.
Eddie's heart pounded loudly as you kissed him back. He wrapped his arms around you tighter, pulling you closer to him. His body shivered when you pressed yourself against him, pressing your chest to his. Eddie walked you backwards, your thighs hitting the picnic table. Eddie helped you up, caging you in.
Eddie broke the kiss, breathing heavily, "I love you, Y/N." He whispered, cupping your face.
You shivered, "I love you too." You spoke softly, kissing him again.
"Let’s work together from now on…" Eddie spoke, his lips gently caressing yours.
You nodded, "I think I'll enjoy that." You muttered, smiling up at Eddie.
Eddie grinned, "Good.”

2022 in books
It’s been a good year in books. More waves of covid = more time spent inside reading, away from crowds of people so silver linings and all that.
Happily, I’ve also been lucky enough to have lived with and befriended fellow keen bean readers and we’ve swapped our lil paperback collections back and forth. One of my top 5 favourite feelings has got to be watching someone you know read a book you love. Up there too is chatting with a friend about a book they’ve lent you as you read it for the first time. Chef’s kiss experiences.
This year, I elected to read almost entirely for pleasure. I switched jobs two times and worked on getting into a consistent fitness routine of going to the gym 3 times a week so was not looking for anything else challenging or intellectually stimulating to do in my free time. Unfortunately, Canberra does not have very good libraries so I didn't have access to a huge variety of options. But, the library of friends came through with the goods.
Without further ado, a list of my 2022 in books in chronological order that I read them.
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet
Quite an interesting and thought-provoking exploration of race and the extent to we are able to choose who we become. Two mixed-race twins growing up in 1950s America experience very different parallel realities as one chooses to capitalise on her lighter skin colour to pass as white. Raised questions of material comfort versus cultural integrity have no clear answers but makes for compelling food for thought.
How We Love by Clementine Ford
This book is slight departure from Clementine Ford's usual stuff-- more tender and vulnerable. Each chapter is about one of the loves in her life and it's as much a letter to a past and future selves as it is an ode to non-romantic love. I also went to her ‘Secular Love Sermon’ aka How We Love book tour show in November of this year which was maybe the best event I went to this year. Here’s to love as bearing witness to life and telling stories always.
The Dry by Jane Harper
Before this year, I hadn't read any of Jane Harper's books. This year I read them all. Goes to show how addictive and effective they are as crime thrillers. The story unfolds and weaves together to reach such a satisfying conclusion. I can't really say too much without spoiling it but Jane Harper has a wonderful way of characterising the Australian bush landscape as a focal point in her novels.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne
Incredibly unmemorable. It was pleasant but I can't remember a single thing on reflection.
The Survivors by Jane Harper
Not one of my favourite Jane Harper novels, but as always a great page-turning read.
After I Do by Taylor Jenkin Reid
An interesting exploration of love after marriage and the reality of the highs and lows that starts after most romance stories end. As can be clearly seen from the other books by the same author I kept picking up after this one, I really relished this unconventional premise.
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkin Reid
I picked this up because the cover was kind of pretty and I was on a lunch-break walk to Civic Library and this was the best pleasant surprise. Something about this novel reminded me of getting deliciously absorbed into a book during school holidays — falling asleep reading and then reading again first thing in the morning. I have a big soft spot for self-made underdog stories and eldest/only daughter protagonists.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkin Reid
Absolutely devoured this story of old-school glamour, love, and disappointment. Nice and neat tie-in with the narrator/journalist’s own modern day sub-plot.
Entire ACOTAR series by Sarah J Maas.
Faerie smut that fits in just about every trope of men written by a woman for the female gaze in a good way. Very fun.
Love Stories by Trent Dalton
Touchingly earnest, Trent Dalton shows us that in hard times, sometimes the best thing to go is to choose to go soft. To choose to show and share the hurt and highs of loving and being loved that are the only things that'll matter in the end. This got me through a chaotic and draining month I worked in family law. I cried a lot.
Force of Nature by Jane Harper
Again, a lesser favourite but good fun nonetheless.
The Lost Man by Jane Harper
This one is up there, so good I reread it a week ago. The perfectly placed red herrings, the family tension, and small-town grudges and secrets. 10/10 times. I particularly enjoyed how men's mental health, loneliness, and isolation were prevalent themes. Jane Harper also sprinkles easter eggs throughout her Faulk novels which subtly intertwine the characters from her books which is fun to spot.
Milk Fed by Melissa Broder
There was a lot of online hype about this book, and the author is behind a twitter account I used to follow called 'SoSadToday' (yeah, I know bahaha). But the rather triggering portrayal of disordered eating and punitive calorie counting made this one a pretty stressful read. There was also zero sense of closure at the end, only confusion.
Book Lovers by Emily Henry
A very sweet and delightful rom-com read for those of us who are sometimes sick of the overly predictable cookie-cutter romance novel. The protagonist is very relatable and is all in all a refreshing palate cleanser to the saccharine netflix christmas holiday movie tropes.
Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton
Absent of any particularly astute life advice at least in any productive sense but deeply comforting that the era of being in your twenties is as chaotic as it is character-building and all of it is normal.
The No Show by Beth O'Leary
Slightly over-complicated plot-twist but props for originality and side-plot which I may or may not have become more invested in than the main plot by the end.
Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne
A fun, quirky, alternative rom-com read with colourful characters and the evergreen message that it's more than ok to be a cosy offbeat weirdo as long as enjoy it.
No Matter Our Wreckage by Gemma Carey
Written by a now-Canberran dwelling lady academic researcher, this book reflexively documents   her own childhood sexual assault and abuse. Which is to say things get very real and very dark at points. But, Gemma Carey refuses to let her story go untold and that courage glues together what is an otherwise tragic and deeply personal patchwork of recollections and tribulations.
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
Honestly, I can't say I'm a big Sally Rooney fan but sometimes you are having a mid time and simply want to escape into someone else's even mid-er time this hits. I can't explain it any other way.
The Switch by Beth O'Leary
I tried to listen to the audiobook of this story and didn't make it very far but when I found a copy of the paperback, I got through it quite readily. Cosy as all Beth O'Leary novels are, if the obstacle-boyfriend can be a bit characterised as a bit obviously shit.
November 9th Colleen Hoover
If you miss the days of scoffing down random wattpad stories as a tween, this is perfect.
Love and Virtue by Diana Reid
I spent on year studying at the University of Sydney in 2017 and used to always wonder what went on behind the hedges of the overpriced colleges where presumably people with very rich parents lived. This book is almost definitely a very accurate window into the answer. Having studied law and arts at Usyd herself, the
Verity by Colleen Hoover
Wtf!? Truly I was relentlessly gazumped and then bamboozled. No sense can be made of this one, it's beyond sense.
Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood
I've just finished this book, it might be my last read of 2022. A very sweet and escapist read (mostly for me, as a mathematically and scientifically challenged legal professional lmao). Though I will say I enjoyed Ali Hazelwood's other novel The Love Hypothesis a smidge more.
Whew, that was quite a test for my memory. Any outstandingly great or shitty reads for you in 2022? KEEN TO DISCUSS as always.
