Obey Me! Nightbringer Lesson 23 sent me on an emotional roller coaster!

I have always been and always will be a massive Mammon simp. I love him. Genuinely and truly.

So when he said this :

I felt terrible for him, I wanted to hug/hold him and comfort him so badly!!

Because that's not true at all! ; ^ ;

Mammon is NOT awful. He's never been awful. Just because he has "greedy" desires... That could be said of everyone.

Mammon is a wonderful, passionate person and a loving, caring brother. He has been my favorite since the very beginning because I could tell just how sweet and kind and pure he is deep down.

He deserves the very best. He is worthy of everything good in all three worlds!

I love Mammon, I will always love Mammon.

Then when he finally awakens...

You can hug me as much as you want, any time you want, nonstop, please never let go! TwT

I seriously was SO much happier with this pact scenario than in the OG.

I mean... in the OG, Mammon only wanted his credit card. So it seemed kind of... forced? Not special?

But this time! Making a pact with Mammon is special. It's meaningful. It felt right. In my opinion, it's perfect! Kudos to the devs for this one 💙

And it gets even better :

I legitimately wanted to cry. I actually felt tears begin to form in my eyes, no joke or exaggeration.

Me.... special??? No.... No way.... Never.....

I know it's "just a game", but that hit me HARD! I took it personally, and it meant so much to me. Especially coming from Mammon (ಥ◡ಥ)

Forget the pact, where's our marriage certificate already?! lol

Anyway.... I was completely satisfied with this Lesson. I'm happy we made our pact with Mammon and how/why it happened.

Originally, I thought maybe Nightbringer would follow the OG in terms of forming pacts, which would mean that Levi was next.

But from how this lesson ended, it looks like Asmo is actually next! All I can say is.... I'm super excited for more 💙

Are we being trolled at this point or are they just rushing chapters without translating everything?

I’m no expert in Japanese but when looking up translations for, “Michael” it’s not quite the above.

When I put the above into google it goes directly to links for Saint Michael the Archangel so it must be, “Angel Michael” or “Archangel Michael” if I had to guess.

Someone who knows Japanese, please help a confused enby out, pretty please? 🥺

It just seems sus that out of everything the only (possible) error I found in NB Lesson 23 was this. Why is only Michael’s name in Japanese? I’m kinda thinking we are being trolled by the devs at this point.

what does it mean to be the avatar of greed?

It takes too long for Mammon to fall asleep.

So long, in fact, that he hears you slowly getting up from the couch and making your way out of his room, trying to be as quiet as possible, probably thinking he's already conked out. It would've worked if he was asleep, but asleep he is not. Mammon holds back a snort, hearing the stairs creak as you make your way down, and swallows when he notices how his brothers' muffled voices become louder. You must've gone downstairs straight to the living room.

What a night, huh.

For a moment, Mammon closes his eyes and daydreams a little longer. He will have to go down and face the storm, eventually, but not now. He can breathe for a bit longer. He owes Belphie and Simeon an apology, after all. Behind his eyelids, he sees Michael, frowning at his begging of asking Lucifer to take him as an apprentice instead. For a moment he fears it won't ever happen, facing Michael's and Lucifer's refusals over and over and over, unwavering. Then, as if out of thin air, you appear right next to Mammon, squeeze his hand and tell him in a soft voice that it will be okay. Trust me. Keep trying. He adores you, we all do, so do not forget that.

Your trust in him aches, your belief in him, your love for him, all of it. I have always been yours, Mammon, you'd said the moment he'd poured his heart out to you. His greedy, hungry heart, which always wants to swallow you whole so none else can.

It's terrifying to think how close he's been to actually doing it.

And yet, he can't let go of his greed. Mammon can't stop wanting you, wanting everything from you. It's in his nature as the Avatar of Greed, it’s not a skin he can shed off like an unwanted molt, even if he sometimes feels it's just as tight over his skin and is slowly suffocating him.

His own words, coming from the depths of his heart, still haunt him. He won't forget them anytime soon.

I never even stopped to think that it might cause trouble for someone else. But the way I thought back then... It was naive. And lately, it's been gettin' clearer and clearer to me just how naive. I'm startin' to see through it...

And it's real, real scary...

You'd looked at him, not saying a word. He couldn't stop.

... I can't go back. Not anymore.

I've hurt so many people. All for me. All for my own benefit.

"But Mammon, I know for a fact that you're kind to your family because you love them, don't you?"

You'd said it so matter-of-factly, as if just affirming that water is wet and the sky is blue. There was no mockery or pity, just a determination in your eyes he'd seen a few times since he'd met you.

"There's still time to learn to be kind."

And you were probably right, damn you, but Mammon had doubted his affection for his family could stand against his greed, and the mere thought of it had terrified him.

Mammon covers his eyes with his arm, rolling over on his bed. The muffled voices coming from downstairs have grown softer, and Mammon feels a pang of something go through his chest when he realizes you probably shushed all of them so he can rest.

For a moment Mammon wonders if the pang in his chest is an effect of the new pact you two have just made, then he shakes off the idea with a sigh. Pacts aren't supposed to hurt, so he's probably just exhausted, right? Lucifer had knocked him out pretty good, after all...

The sudden knock on his door startles the life out of him, and Mammon lets out a curse. He's not ready to face anyone just yet, and for a moment he considers pretending he's asleep for a while longer.

"Mammon. I know you're awake."

Damn Lucifer and his keen senses. Mammon hadn't even heard him come up the stairs. He wonders if Lucifer snuck past you when you weren't looking. The thought makes him smile a bit.

"'course you do. Come in."

When Lucifer walks in, Mammon feels the urge to curl up on himself. Not out of fear, but out of shame. 

None's watching, after all.

Lucifer sits on the edge of the bed, crossing his arms and tyring to look as the pillar he always tries to be. Mammon holds back the urge to roll his eyes. "How are you feeling? We were told you woke up, but that it was best to let you rest for a bit longer until you came down."

"'m feelin' okay. Just a bit tired."

Lucifer nods, then averts his gaze. 

It's strange to see Lucifer at a loss for words, but Mammon isn't exactly in the mood to talk him up a storm or annoy him as he usually does, so he's not sure what to do when the seconds keep ticking, and ticking, and ticking...

There's muffled laughter coming from the first floor. It sounds like Diavolo's, most likely keeping the mood uplifted without even trying. Your voice, too, sounds muffled and a bit stern. Of course you'd be the only one trying to shush the Prince of the Devildom when he's getting noisy for someone else's sake. 

You're incredible, Mammon thinks, as the thought of being the total opposite of him hits him like a brick to the face.

Mammon lets out a sigh.

"Don't you worry me like that ever again."

Lucifer's sudden shift catches Mammon off guard, and when he snaps his head up to look at the older demon, he finds Lucifer staring back at him with hardened eyes and his lips turned downward.

"Wha–"

"I mean it, Mammon," and if Mammon didn't know better, he'd say he's in for a scolding of a lifetime. But he knows almost every telltale of a Lucifer Scolding, so he knows Lucifer isn't angry. Far from it.

He's worried. To death, in fact.

It only makes Mammon feel worse, yet a small part of him feels a little happy, remembering the newfound words that lifted his heavy heart in the darkness before you both awoke: the words that could only come from an older brother.

"I vow to protect you — hopes, desires, dreams and all."

Truly, Mammon feels so glad he never gave up on trying to reach Lucifer back then.

"... I'm sorry, Lucifer. Won't happen again."

"Good," the older demon says, expression softening so fast it almost gives Mammon whiplash. "But if it does, come running straight to me, understood?"

It's a reassurance. If it gets you, I'll be here for you no matter what. Mammon notes how Lucifer has the same look in his eyes that you do while you're looking at this mess of a family when you think none's noticing. But Mammon does.

You're both a pillar, a shoulder, a shield, a whole foundation . Yet between you and Lucifer there's a big difference: Lucifer has always carried the burden alone, while you use your own strength combined with the one of those around you, never fearing, never proud.

Mammon sees Pride slowly swallowing up his older brother the same way Greed swallowed him. He thinks: this wo n 't do , and vows to himself to be the first to run to Lucifer when the time comes.

He feels this is something they all have to go through, as Avatars of the Seven Sins, but it doesn't mean they have to do it alone. His little brothers can use the help, too. Perhaps he can soften the burden on both you and Lucifer if he steps up as an older brother for a little bit.

Lucifer is still waiting for his answer.

"... I will, ya got my word."

Satisfied, Lucifer nods and makes his way out of the room. When he has one foot out of the door, he turns around and looks like he's about to say something, but in the end he simply walks out and closes the door behind him.

Mammon sighs, although he's smiling now. 

"... Yeah, I can do this."

He's Mammon, the Avatar of Greed and big brother to the Lords of the Underworld. Nothing more, nothing less.

If he fails, he'll try again, and again, and again, because he's the Avatar of Greed, and giving up on what he wants the most isn't in his nature.

His head feels clearer than it has in days, and he feels lighter. This sure isn't a side effect of the pact, is it? He'll have to ask you later. You’re his first, after all.

Jumping off the bed, Mammon decides it's time he goes downstairs. It's not like he can rest now, after all. He’ll do it later. Maybe he can ask you to join him, too, if only Solomon would stop hovering over you for a damn second –

Oh, his greed is showing... Ah, what the hell . You've accepted it too just as Mammon had done, so you better be ready for him later when he catches you.

With a skip on his step, Mammon walks out of his room and makes his way down the old familiar stairs of the House of Lamentation, straight towards his family.

So. Lesson 23, huh. How are you all Mammon lovers holding up?

We start right where we last left it off in lesson 22 : in the Celestial Realm about to be run over by Mammon who's apparently riding a pegasus chariot (that's SO COOL THOUGH I WANT TO SEE IT IN A CARD). He crashes the thing and before anyone can get into proper introductions, Mammon hears Michael's looking for him and runs away to hide, dragging both you and Little D with him.

They keep teasing us with Michael lol but ANYWAYS. After the scare you can hug him or pinch his cheek, and also show how happy you are that he's smiling. I found it really cute.

You can ask Mammon about his deal with Michael, then he says this.

They will be the death of me I swear to god.

Mammon, convinced you're two angels (??????), asks you to go with him so that can vouch for him to Lucifer so he takes Mammon under his wing. Sure, why not?

Mammon really adored Lucifer before they became brothers and wanted Luci to be the one who supervised him, but Mammon tells you that Lucifer keeps shutting his idea down and tells him he should stay with Michael instead.

Ah, good ol' Lucifer, doing "what I think is best for people without properly talking to them". He folds quickly, though, and basically tells Mammon that he will agree to talk to Michael about it if he manages to bring to Lucifer one rose from Simeon's garden before sundown. So off we go again.

We find Simeon in said pretty garden, reading a book. However, he says that said book is a book of prophecies, and the fucker just drops this line when Mammon asks him if he's learned anything.

Thanks, now I feel like crying.

Simeon does say he's probably destined to meet you again and that he will probably lose his wings, but that it's all up to interpretation, so he's not completely sure if he got his future correctly. Oh man.

Mammon decides to ask Simeon about taking one rose, but Simeon outright says no because the roses are from Father (gulp), so they're really important. Mammon desperately tells him that it's just one rose so Lucifer finally accepts his request, that he will do anything, and Simeon almost caves, but then asks Mammon if he'd ever considered how Simeon would feel after having to give away one of the important roses he'd grown from their Father.

Mammon doesn't want to hurt Simeon, but he doesn't want to give up on his dream either. In the end, Simeon decides to finally give him the rose.

We can ask Simeon about the roses being important to him, and he says "Yes, they are, but Mammon is just as important." I need A SECOND.

Mission success. With the rose in hand, the trio goes back to Lucifer, who's surprised Mammon has managed to get the rose in the end.

He looks satisfied, though, and tells Mammon that the reason Simeon gave him the rose was because of Mammon's determination, his grip on his dreams and what he truly wants...

which is also connected to his greed.

Lucifer tells Mammon said sin can hurt those around him, and that even if then he's still determined to hold on to the hopes and desires in his heart...

Mammon's memory ends there. For now, we don't know what Lucifer said next.

The first one right in the gut. Jesus.

But I have to say this talk with Mammon is one of my favourite parts thus far:

I really like the options we were given. He's got time to learn, and he's already kind, too.

SWEATS VERY NERVOUSLY.

But wait, we're not done yet, because this is when he finally remembers what was that Lucifer told him in the end.

HEY. HEY MAN. YOU CAN'T JUST HIT ME LIKE THAT. FUCK.

I wondered a lot back then in og Obey Me why was Mammon his favourite plus his most trusted brother, considering all we saw most of the time was their bickering or Lucifer chasing after an "irresponsible" Mammon. Sure, they had their moments, but nothing it's impacting me harder than their moments here in Nightbringer. I'm so glad we get to see them so close. It warms my heart a lot, because I did think Mammon deserved better treatment. I'm really happy they're showing how important he is to Lucifer and all of his siblings, plus how he's just... Mammon, not an idiot that gets hung from the ceiling or someone who bursts in when mc's having a moment with someone else. He's just Mammon, the Avatar of Greed.

When we wake up in Mammon's room after this, the new title is "Holding on to Hope." Whew man.

He gives you a hug first thing to make sure he's really back, too. He's the absolute best.

He feels really bad he put you through his outburst, too, and wants to make it up to you.

Sounds like a perfect way to settle things, honestly. WE GOT OUR FIRST PACT.

FINALLY. MAMMON HAD TO BE THE FIRST, OBVIOUSLY.

The final part of the lesson is about how Mammon is back to his usual level of greediness (and also really peppy and is pissing Belphegor off lol). Lucifer thanks you too, and you tell him that part of Mammon's recovery is thanks to his words back in the Celestial Realm. They all go back to normal, with Satan summoning something at breakfast because Mammon pissed him off and Lucifer having to intervene pffft.

Also, they mention this off handedly, but it soon becomes relevant: Asmo is missing from breakfast. It made me go "uh oh. He's next, isn't he."

Pan to the next scene:

Yup, he's next.

I actually had to go and look up the order of the pacts we make with the demon brothers in the og game because I wasn't sure if Asmo was second. I thought since Mammon was first that they were going to follow the same pact order, but it seems like it's not. In the og game Mammon was first, then Leviathan, Beel, Asmo, Satan, Belphie and lastly Lucifer. But here it seems Asmo is going to be second.

It breaks my heart a bit because in lesson 22 Asmo was terrified of ending up just like Mammon when he was fully consumed by his Greed aaaaa. We've already had a trip to the Celestial Realm with Asmo though, so I wonder if they're going to do the same thing as Mammon (showing the reason he chose to join Lucifer) or do something else entirely. We have to wait until next Friday to see it.

The extra scene takes place a bit after both Mammon and you wake up, leaving him to rest a bit while you go meet the rest of the brothers to give them an update. Simeon goes down memory lane about all the times Mammon had tried to get Lucifer's attention, including one time he went to grab a crystal lily for Luci, got himself lost and Lucifer had to go and fetch him. Another time he blew the kitchen up trying to cook dinner for Lucifer's birthday lmfao and when Lucifer's about to join in the fun of telling Mammon's old stories, Mammon bursts in and begs him to stop HAHAH

Okay this part was really cute www I love them.

After finishing the lesson you get a video call too! AGAIN! This time is just Mammon and you (before Levi and Beel join in), with Mammon begging you to keep quiet about the hug he gave you. It's short and funny. I wish I could add more than 30 pictures so I could show you Levi's 3d face here, because it had me cracking up lmfao

The hard mode scene takes place in Mammon's room as he's wondering if you two have really made a pact after all, because he feels no different and you should have a bit of his powers. As if on cue, you get a message that you've won the lottery and Satan pops in to give you money as thanks of giving him his wallet back a few days prior.

You use the stay command too, and Mammon comments that it's stronger now. That's a good sign that you're getting your powers back!

I'm really curious to see what it'll happen with Asmo ;u; and who the next brother will be, since it seems to be random (unless I'm missing something. It's not birth order, nor previous pact order either....). We shouldn't forget about that prophecy book, either. I don't trust any off-hand mentions in this game lmao.

Oh, and the German titles for the cards in normal mode this round are: Slothful Sieben for Belphie, and then it switches to different titles for the others. Great Acht for Diavolo, Confident Neun for Barbatos and Sacred Zehn for Luke. Simeon and Solomon are the only ones missing, then come the other three undateables (I think).
