Do You Love Music?

A Calico Yorki Fic for a friend of mine.

Warnings: GN!Reader

Word Count: 1050

Walking into the infirmary, you looked at the man lying sleeping near the window. He and a few others had managed to make it to your island about a week ago, sick and on the brink of death with stories of the Grand Line and sailing through the calm belt. His friends hadn’t been quite as sick as he’d been, in quite as bad shape. They’d gotten better faster than their poor captain. Still, he was doing a lot better now and at least he wasn’t contagious. Walking over to him, you did your routine checks, smiling when you noticed he looked even better.

“Hey Doctor, how am I doing?” the blond asked, still fairly weak. You smiled, writing a couple of things down really quick.

“You’re doing very well. I expect you could be up as early as the middle of next week. Nothing too strenuous but a short walk would be alright.” you said, grabbing some medication for him.

“Would you come with me? You’re my doctor, right? You should make sure I don’t get hurt or anything.” he said with a large smile. He’d been flirting with you like this since he’d regained consciousness. At least, you were pretty sure he was flirting with you. To be absolutely honest, you weren’t sure if he was flirting with you or if it was just his being a pirate, if he did this with anyone he found attractive.

“Yes, I’ll walk with you, but only once I deem you ready to do so! Now rest, if you want to be up and walking next week, you need your rest.” you said softly, making sure he took his medicine before letting him continue resting.

It was a little over two weeks before you actually let him get up, even though he’d been ready to do so sooner. He still wasn’t back up to full strength, but you suspected that even as he was now, he could still best anyone from your town, meaning he was probably healthy enough for a short stroll. Besides, it was a nice day out, a light breeze coming off of the ocean, gently ruffling the grass around your little clinic.

“Gotta say, doc, your island’s pretty nice. I wasn’t conscious when we got here so I didn’t get a good look.” he said, hands stuffed in his pockets as he looked around.

“Don’t worry, none of them got a good look with how sick you all were. Though they’ve been enjoying it since you got here. Most days they play music in town, you’ve got quite the crew. Dedicated and loyal, friendly, kind. You must be quite the captain.” you said, smiling at him as the two of you headed back for your clinic. It wasn’t a particularly long walk, but that was okay because he cherished his time with you. With each passing day, he found himself growing closer and closer to you, more attached to you. Vaguely he wondered how his crew was doing, he cared about you so much, he wanted to stay with you, but what about the crew? Could he really leave the life of a pirate behind? At the same time, what if you didn’t want to be a pirate? Could he leave you? He didn’t realize he’d stopped walking as he stared at you.

“You know, you’re staring at me like that again.” you said, giving him a small smile, looking back at him.

“Like what?” he asked, smiling and looking away. He knew he’d been staring lately, even knew why he’d been staring like he was, but he didn’t want to say anything, not yet.

“You’re staring at me like you’re… Never mind.” you said, shaking your head. You couldn’t bring it up, what if he didn’t feel the same way? What if he did?! He was a pirate captain, he’d go back out to sea sooner or later. Could you really follow him out to sea? You’d never left your island before, and what about your town? You weren’t the only doctor, but you still took care of a number of people.

He stood on the dock, hands stuffed in his pockets, quietly singing as he stared out at the sunset. You’d given him a clean bill of health, meaning he could set back out to sea if he wanted. But he didn’t want to leave you. He wondered if he could convince you to go out to sea with him. He’d take you out to sea, introduce you to Laboon, introduce you to his crew, show you the Grand Line, and best of all, sail with you.

“What’re you singing?” your voice called out, making him turn to see you standing there.

“Binks’ Sake, it’s my favorite song, the entire crew sang it when I had to leave.” he said, giving you a smile.

“I know that one… Sea wind blows. To where? Who knows? The waves will be our guide! O'er across the ocean's tide Rays of sunshine far and wide Birds they sing of cheerful things, in circles passing by!” you sang, instantly captivating the blond as he stared at you. Your voice was amazing.

“Do you… love music?” he asked, rubbing the back of his neck as he smiled at you.

“Of course I do. Had I not become a doctor I think I would’ve wanted to become a singer. I remember singing all the time when I was younger.” you said, giving him a bright smile.

“The only requirement I have for joining my crew is that you have to love music. I could use a doctor like you, not that my ship’s doctor isn’t good, but how can I not want the person who cured us on board?” he asked, making you smile. You stared at him for a moment, taking a few deep breaths. As terrifying as the prospect was, you wanted to go out to sea with him.

“Alright. I’ll go with you. Take me with you.” you said, smiling at him.

“Then I’ll gather up all of the crew! It's time to ship out.” he said with a large grin. You giggled as he partially quoted the song. It was his favorite song and it was quickly starting to become yours as well.
