The Yoruba religion (Yoruba: Ìṣẹ̀ṣe), West African Orisa (Òrìṣà), or Isese (Ìṣẹ̀ṣe), comprises the traditional religious and spiritual concepts and practice of the Yoruba people. Its homeland is in present-day Southwestern Nigeria, which comprises the majority of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and Lagos States, as well as parts of Kogi state and the adjoining parts of Benin and Togo, commonly known as Yorubaland (Yoruba: Ilẹ̀ Káàárọ̀-Oòjíire).
It shares some parallels with the Vodun practiced by the neighboring Fon and Ewe peoples to the west and with the religion of the Edo people to the east. Yoruba religion is the basis for a number of religions in the New World, notably Santería, Umbanda, Trinidad Orisha, and Candomblé.[1] Yoruba religious beliefs are part of Itàn (history), the total complex of songs, histories, stories, and other cultural concepts which make up the Yoruba society.
Tumblr media
The Yoruba name for the Yoruba indigenous religion is Ìṣẹ̀ṣẹ, which also refers to the traditions and rituals that encompass Yorùbá culture. The term comes from a contraction of the words: Ìṣẹ̀, meaning "source/root origin" and ìṣe, meaning "practice/tradition" coming together to mean "The original tradition"/"The tradition of antiquity" as many of the practices, beliefs, traditions, and observances of the Yoruba originate from the religious worship of Olodumare and the veneration of the Orisa.
Tumblr media
According to Kola Abimbola, the Yorubas have evolved a robust cosmology. Nigerian Professor for Traditional African religions, Jacob K. Olupona, summarizes that central for the Yoruba religion, and which all beings possess, is known as "Ase", which is "the empowered word that must come to pass," the "life force" and "energy" that regulates all movement and activity in the universe".Every thought and action of each person or being in Aiyé (the physical realm) interact with the Supreme force, all other living things, including the Earth itself, as well as with Orun (the otherworld), in which gods, spirits and ancestors exist. The Yoruba religion can be described as a complex form of polytheism, with a Supreme but distant creator force, encompassing the whole universe.
The anthropologist Robert Voeks described Yoruba religion as being animistic, noting that it was "firmly attached to place".
Each person living on earth attempts to achieve perfection and find their destiny in Orun-Rere (the spiritual realm of those who do good and beneficial things).
One's ori-inu (spiritual consciousness in the physical realm) must grow in order to consummate union with one's "Iponri" (Ori Orun, spiritual self).
Iwapẹlẹ (or well-balanced) meditative recitation and sincere veneration is sufficient to strengthen the ori-inu of most people. Well-balanced people, it is believed, are able to make positive use of the simplest form of connection between their Ori and the omnipotent Olu-Orun: an Àwúre (petition or prayer) for divine support.
In the Yoruba belief system, Olodumare has ase over all that is. Hence, it is considered supreme.

ORUN
Post Apotheosis Space Opera RPG
Eons ago, we were a desperate and different people, all vying for dominance of the galaxy. Fearful... Angry... Greedy... Shaped by petty desires... When the beings called Orisha came, they showed us a better way. They created Utopian worlds, Oruns, especially for us. These worlds and all the others of the galaxy flourished. The peoples of the galaxy were happy. They guided us to apotheosis, transcendence from the physical reality, and expansion of our Ori.
Then, with a single stray thought, it was all torn apart. The mnemonic Sopona virus spread throughout the galaxy. Worlds fell into catatonic states, others hurt themselves in unspeakable ways, and all that stood against the psychic maelstrom was the Union of Ascendancy and some of the ascendant, the Oluru, who returned. Ultimately the war was won, the Sopona virus contained, and order restored... but the secret of apotheosis was lost.
That was over 500 years ago.
In Orun, you play an envoy of the ascendant Oluru, called a Djali or Luminary. Not quite ascendant themselves, the Luminaries travel to different worlds as advisers, troubleshooters, and peacekeepers in the post-apotheosis galaxy. They explore lost star systems and ultimately help enlighten worlds and their people, waking the galaxy from its disordered indolence.

DEJA VU (2022 NIGERIAN MOVIE) & THE CONCEPT OF EGBE ORUN
Tumblr media
The Nigerian movie Deja Vu is a must-watch for individuals interested in the concept of Egbe Orun. It is a story about two individuals having issues in their relationship. The narrative focuses on a married couple who discovers that their children do not share a biological connection with their father. This revelation triggers turmoil within the family as the husband contemplates divorce while the wife insists that the test results are inaccurate.
Throughout the film, the couple and their families seek spiritual assistance in this matter. The wife and her mother consult their Christian pastor, while the husband’s family rely on the wisdom of their Ifa priest. Thereafter, the role of the Babalawo becomes paramount in resolving the family’s issue. He plays a significant part in helping everyone involved in the matter overcome a serious spiritual problem.
DEJA VU PLOT
As the couple find themselves at odds over the situation, the wife goes to her in-laws for reconciliation. After much thought and deliberation, they resolve to have her face the Mother Shrine to prove her innocence. This is a shrine that has existed since ancient times within Yoruba communities.
The Mother Shrine is considered one of the most important shrines within the Ifa tradition. People often go to it to make offerings for the whole town or community. They likewise go to it to resolve serious issues. So, taking the matter here was a major step for the family.
At the same time that the couple goes through their troubles, another family is experiencing turmoil. Ultimately, a jealous wife harbors suspicions of her husband’s infidelity. The husband in this marriage is very kind and loving toward his wife. However, he has issues performing in the bedroom, leading her to believe that he is being unfaithful. To compound their issues, this couple has been unable to bear children.
Later, it is discovered that the woman in the first marriage is having sleepwalking issues. During these episodes, she unknowingly engages in intimate relations with another man, which resulted in her pregnancies. It turns out that the man with the jealous wife is the father of her children. He appears to likewise be sleepwalking during their sexual encounters.
CONNECTION TO EGBE ORUN
While Deja Vu doesn’t explicitly mention that the pair are having Egbe Orun issues, it is deeply implied. Anyone familiar with Yoruba beliefs can easily make the connection. The two individuals end up being star-crossed lovers from a previous life who made a pact to never be with anyone else. Because of this, they suffer in their current relationships.
Neither of the two is able to fully embrace their spouse because of their spiritual connection. Though they both enjoy materially abundant lives, they lack harmony in their relationships. Those aware of the notion of Egbe Orun spirits understand that this is a tale-tale sign of their presence. This group of spirits is known to cause marital and other relationship issues.
Tumblr media
THE YORUBA CONCEPT OF EGBE ORUN
However, keep in mind that the movie has its sensational moments. The movie hinges on Yoruba beliefs surrounding the concept of heavenly mates. However, it is not entirely based on traditional ideologies regarding this group of spirits.
While these spirits are known to engage in spiritual sex with their earthly mates, they cannot physically impregnate their human spouses. Instead, they often cause challenges with the individual being able to conceive, carry, or deliver children. Also, they may cause many troubles in the person’s marriage, leading to separation or divorce.
Additionally, the concept of a spiritual spouse implies that this individual resides in heaven, separated from their earthly mate. If one has a heavenly mate, they will not encounter this entity in physical form on Earth. So, even though the concept of Egbe Orun is addressed, the plot doesn’t fully support the notion of having a heavenly peer according to traditional belief.
SUMMARY
The movie Deja Vu is a great watch for anyone desiring to gain deeper understanding of the Yoruba culture. It features the Ifa tradition as a major part of modern-day life within a Yoruba family. It tells a story of how individuals interact with their traditional beliefs in mundane and monumental ways. Overall, it is an interesting way to learn more about Egbe Orun spirits for those interested in the Ifa religion.

Character Introductions: The Ensemble
Orune Kagitorin
Formerly betrothed to Sorroth's brother Suvaeth as a political alliance, Orune sweeps back into the Abedesin residence shortly after the murders with an offer: she will tutor Sorroth in everything he needs to survive as the new head of his house, in exchange for her hand in marriage. What does Sorroth have to lose?
Wren
Appointed headslave of the Abedesin residence in Sorroth's absence, Wren is loyal, wise, and - to Sorroth - almost frighteningly aware of everything happening in the house. Excellent qualities for a slave you have to put trust in, and they do it all with ease. They saved Sorroth from drowning in a pond as a child. Though not a lick of magic exists in them, they have absorbed a lot of theory over the years.
The Empress
Empress Vivelli considered Sorroth's father her favorite cousin, but that's not the only reason for Severing Kou: it's a punishment few mages can stomach, and a demonstration of her immense and mostly unique power. It's how she became Empress in the first place, darling! Everyone is terrified of her, and with good reason. She is sole handler of the Sentinels, the anti-mage specialist force.
Milrine
Sorroth's mother married Isril Abedesin as a unification of powers. Shortly after their marriage, however, nearly her entire side of the family was killed in the accident that would become Milrine's obsession. Now she seeks to prove teleportation, the last obstacle, through a marriage of magic, science, and math. Though she loves her children dearly, she can be distant and cold, and her desperation has led her to experiment on slaves.
Isril
Named in the tradition of a long line of ancestors all the way back to the first Emperor (back when there was actually an Empire), Isril had a finger in almost every pie in Sorrow. A shrewd businessman and powerful mage in his own right, he supported his cousin the Empress with coin, words, and well-timed assassinations. Believing he was untouchable, he raised his firstborn as his sole heir, never knowing his death and Suvaeth's would come together.
Suvaeth
Suvaeth was the ideal heir: charming, studious, and obedient to his father's will. Isril molded him into a perfected version of himself. He had all the noble girls wrapped around his finger, but he was rumored to actually be madly in love with Orune, his arranged betrothed. The scandal!

Shame on him!

NaNoWriMo 2022: Day One
I may not be doing one of these every day, but today was so successful I felt like sharing.
Project: An Offering of Ashes New Words: 3,320 Total Words: 3,320 Updated on nanowrimo.org: ✔
I did five 15min to 20min sprints over on my local discord, which made up 2,072 of the total 3,320 words. I got through the prologue scene, most of chapter one, and the start of chapter two. There was a point where I used ye olde brackets trick ([INSERT ROUGH DESCRIPTION OF WHAT HAPPENS, KEEP GOING]) at the "news" scene where Sorroth gets summoned by his mom back to the city to keep his family from falling apart and take possession of a traumatized murderer, can't forget that, but overall though it is extremely messy, tangential all over, and no more than like, 3 lines are fit for public consumption, I am ecstatic.
Unfortunately the only reason I think I was able to get a head start was this damnable cough, which made me unable to go into work. On days I work I am going to be nowhere near this productive.
Ah well, that's why we get ahead, eh?
