Once again, kings can legitimize bastards. Kings must do this as an official decree. They must recognize someone as a bastard and then name them as legitimate. But this is a relatively easy thing that the king can do within his own power.

So when people try to claim that the Strong boys are legitimate because their mother lied and said they were, and the king wouldn't speak the truth... Viserys could have legitimized Rhaenyra's sons at any point in their lives. He could have said these boys are not Laenor Velaryon's, but they are Rhaenyra Targaryens, and the blood of the dragon, and due to Targaryen exceptionalism, I hereby name them as legitimate inheritors. But that is not what he did. His complacency and willful blindness, coupled with Rhaenyra's sense of entitlement and superiority, meant that Viserys would never broach the issue with Rhaenyra, and Rhaenyra truly believed herself to be the exception to the rules and perfectly able to avoid the consequences of her actions due to her privilege and position.

Bastards can be legitimized, but since the Strong boys are bastards that were never legitimized, they remain bastards in the eyes of the law and society. One of them is set to inherit the highest of thrones in the realm and the other is set to steal the Velaryon seat of power from the Velaryons. It's wild that the show doesn't seem to acknowledge how much of a big deal this actually is.

I really liked your interpretation of them + a few other authors, but what attracts me the most of it is the mystery in the relationship and since fandom has decided to hold a very (almost insultingly in my opinion) idealistic view of R0ßß it has lost some of it's appeal for me. Weirdly enough I still love them a lot, because they embody some aspects of Germanicus & Agrippina, a couple that I really love. And I overall really like Jeyne and how courageous she is. So yeah, my problem comes mostly from the R0ßß's characterisation always being that of a selfless saint who sacrifices himself for her honour (or worse, gets roofied).

hellish polycule. I hate it. I genuinely hate Ramsay so much. People keep making Theon the whump protagonist in fanwork by having him suffer, but I want Ramsay to be my whump protagonist. I can't stand that motherfucker. I hope he has the least climactic death in the story because he is simply not worth it. I don't want neither Theon nor Jeyne to ever come near him again because him dying while thinking that they are gone and safe is my favourite fantasy. It would be a huge slight for him.

On the other hand, this is kind of canon and I enjoy all the canon. I love the canon ships for what they are which, in this case, is plain horror. I want to gorge my eyes out whenever I think of it. They make me want to scream. The dynamic in fanwork is less interesting to me because most of the time it just ends up being gratuitous smut or Theon being in love with Jeyne during their captivity which is a huge no for me. (No hate to anyone who enjoys either of those things, they are just boundaries) but if written as in canon (that is implicitly and as horror), then yeah, I'd read a fic.

But viewed through a less serious lens Ramsay CANONICALLY and simultaneously acts as the matchmaker, the third wheel, and the sicko lurking on the window I can't-

I read it as one-sided canon. It's probably not intended by GRRM, but I do. I know for many people this is a mostly comedic ship not to be taken too seriously or the one they use to write $tav0s without having to fully disregard the women, but... Repressed sapphic who is head over heels for a religious extremist who wouldn't hesitate at burning her alive if her god demanded it...oh how relatable. + there is the entire topic of faith

I really love the themes of reborn faith at the sight of someone who is a living miracle. I know it's not a healthy thing in real life, but I love exploring the idea of someone finding a purpose and a cause in the world because of one (1) single person who reignites long-forsaken hope in another. Especially if that person dies later on. + a bit of borderline necrophilia meets Robin Hood. @/mylestoye described them once as:

"this is my lover I’ve pulled him from the arms of death six times & though every time he’s a bit more faded & a bit more lost I feel I can’t let him go, he is a symbol of my religion he reawakened my belief & faith, I will follow him & care for him for as long as I can"

I know it's completely insignificant and GRRM didn't think anything while writing it, but I loved that division. Two sentences. Not one. He had to add it as an afterthought. I remember there was someone on AO3 who wrote exclusively for them in English and Spanish and I used to compare the translations trying to analyse the text. Need to revisit those. They just give me warm happy feelings

Jon could almost see her in that moment, long-faced and gawky, all knobby knees and sharp elbows, with her dirty face and tangled hair. They would wash the one and comb the other, he did not doubt, but he could not imagine Arya in a wedding gown, nor Ramsay Bolton's bed.

It’s funny actually, I came to ASOIAF purely because of Jonsa! Tbh I was pretty stubbornly against reading it or watching GOT for ages, partly because of how notorious the ending was and also I thought it was way too grimdark and misogynistic for me. The joke’s on me now because I’m completely obsessed :P But I read thimbleful’s brilliant they tumble down a couple of years ago, even not knowing anything about GOT, and loved it. I found it again this year and was really drawn to Jon and Sansa’s characters, so I decided to read ASOIAF to actually understand the canon behind them (I was still determined to avoid GOT too until I got curious about how the book scenes were adapted, so my sister finally wore me down into watching it).

I actually tried to avoid jonsa for a while after I started reading the books because I started to feel weird about the fauxcest, but the fics were too good and I got over it lol. I was only idly fanon shipping them at first, but then I started reading jonsa metas on here and found them so well-written and convincing, the level of analysis in them is so amazing. There’s so many parallels and layers of foreshadowing within the text, they can’t all just amount to nothing! I read through the books with a jonsa lens, and maybe it made me biased but it was so fun. That and the weirdly intense relationship Jon and Sansa had on the show have fully converted me, and now I’m in hell waiting for TWOW with everyone else 😋

Hmmm, one pet prediction I have is that Dany isn’t going to be kidnapped by the Dothraki, she’s going to force them to take her to Vaes Dothrak instead, as part of her conquering them. The show made so many weird adaptations around this point trying to obscure Dany’s responsibility for the unrest in Meereen, especially by making the Sons of the Harpy attack in the fighting pit, when Drogon was the reason it broke into chaos and people died. In s6 she was basically a damsel in distress puttering around until Daario and Jorah got there so she could be badass in front of them but, for better or worse, she’s going to have a lot more agency during this section in TWOW and her darkness will be a lot easier to see. Drogon flew away for no reason in the show just so she could be kidnapped, but he’s still with her at the end of ADWD when the Dothraki find her, and they were clearly terrified of him - she has the power in that situation. When she burns down the temple of the dosh khaleen, she’s going to use Drogon, not a convenient brazier, and it’ll be her first personal act of mass murder. Whether it’ll still be presented as righteous is a toss-up, it’ll be from her POV and GRRM could be gross like that, but I think from there we’ll finally get other characters’ perspective on her darkness.

For jonsa, I’m a big fan of the girl in grey being Sansa, or maybe, Alayne; I think Melisandre assumed it was Arya, then didn’t deny Jon’s assumption that it was Alys, because she saw that the girl had brown hair, and knew that there was only one Stark daughter who looked like that. Except Sansa is a brunette now too, and she’d hardly be able to wash the dye out of her hair if she’s on the run. It being Alayne would also fit with Mel’s thoughts when she looks for her again:

“A girl grey as ash, and even as I watched she crumbled and blew away.”

Alayne is a false identity, and will crumble away easily once Sansa no longer needs it.

I also noticed a description in the Jon chapter in ADWD where he finds a group of wildlings in the weirwood grove beyond the Wall:

“The evening sky had turned the faded grey of an old cloak that had been washed too many times, and the first shy stars were coming out.”

It’s an oddly specific description when grey has already been established as a significant colour in Jon’s storyline. I’m holding out hope that when Sansa leaves the Vale, she has to do so in a hurry, and the only cloak she can grab is old and grey, from being washed too many times.

How do you feel about the idea of Stannis sacrificing Shireen to stop the Wall from falling? It might be an Azor Ahai-like move for him to pull (if that is what motivates him), and fit into the "what is one child against the kingdom?" debate.

I do realize I am extremely biased on this topic so I might be wrong but I'm dying on the hill that dnd didn't understand what grrm told them when he was talking abt shireen being burned because like... nvm that they def didn't understand the one thing they got right abt the finale, but in order:

'what is one child against the kingdom' debate: extremely right... but the answer is that you shouldn't sacrifice that child for the kingdom which was the character development moment so like he didn't sacrifice edric storm who meant relatively not much to him and he'd sacrifice shireen?

also, I know dnd didn't read that bit, but like... stannis is the dude who in the middle of MY ARMY IS DYING went to tell people 'if I die put my daughter on the throne' when said daughter is basically the brienne of the situation when it comes to how much people would like her ruling, and I'm supposed to buy he sacrifices her?

also: stannis is going to winterfell to take it except the battle of wf is going to take a shitload of a long time to happen because before that goes down a) davos has to show back up with rickon b) news of jon's death must reach them c) bran has to talk to theon d) theon has to not get executed which 99% happens with bran talking through a tree or smth and being like I'M NOT DEAD YET e) possibly sansa shows up with the vale army + jaime/brienne/sandor which means we get all of that first (but like.. jaime's chapter is mid adwd which actually makes sense timeline wise bc we didn't know shit re what happened after so if while the second half of adwd went down jb were offing stoneheart and going to the vale.... it does add up) so like let's say the battle of wf happens like the one of the wall or blackwater ie 2/3rds roughly into wow, when is he going to get back to the wall esp if winter has come and they're stuck in the snowstorms? because I really doubt that

meanwhile shireen is a) at the wall b) in company of her mother who like pretty much doesn't give a single fuck abt her and hated jon anyway c) melisandre who like.... reading her pov she's better than it seemed but honestly she would burn her if it meant r'hollor doing whatever she thinks he's supposed to do so like shireen most likely is getting burned but not because stannis approved of it imvho

now: if I'm wrong and he does that then saving the realm is the only option I accept and like... sorry but I think he'd get himself burned with her at that point not whatever the fucking agamemnon crap they made him pull in the show like if that happens then he dies with her

because like to top this answer off, we're discussing a guy with an extra fucking literal sense of justice that's honestly way over the top to the point that he wouldn't give davos a knighthood if he didn't cut off the finger joints and davos saved his life literally, and we don't presume that if he sacrificed his own daughter that he wants on the throne should he die before he can get it... he wouldn't be up on that pyre with her? because lmao he would think himself that it's not just and he'd punish himself equally and I'm dying on that hill

like again I'm incredibly biased in this sense because we all know how I am with stannis but there is no way he dies a crappy ooc shitty horrid death like in the show - if he dies (which I'm p sure about too bad bc I still think he should actually be king he's the best candidate) he's dying honorably not... like... that and certainly not bc brienne out of everyone kills him and I'm definitely dying on that hill X°D

Rating ASoIaF POVs

Don’t come at me, these are my personal likes and dislikes (also I’m bored and I had a bizarre fandom encounter yesterday which made me almost consider being too old for Tumblr :P).

If you want to give me yours, I’ll be more than happy to read them!

The order is number of chapters in all the books combined, not my personal favourites. To make it more fun, I’ll also rate them in a scale from 1 to 10 (my least favourite POVs to my best-loved ones).

Here we go!

TYRION - 6/10

Even though he’s not my favourite character (and that’s a huge understatement), I enjoy his chapters in both AGoT and ACoK. I feel kind of “whatever” towards his ASoS chapters, but the real deal-breaker are those from ADwD. It took me nearly two years to finish that book, simply because whenever I stumbled upon his POV, I went into a coma. For me personally it presents his least likeable portrayal, least insightful journey, least understandable motivations. Moreover, he used to constantly objectify women, while judging them by THEIR potential willingness to overcome their prejudice towards him in order to sleep with him. Like get over yourself, ma boy.

JON - 8/10

He started out as an underdog, his chapters in GoT were kind of boring and whiny, nothing ever happened. But boy oh boy, I can’t get enough of him since he ventured out and started hanging out with the wildlings; and his Lord Commander chapters? Probably my favourite ones in ADwD.

ARYA - 8/10

I preferred her hanging out in Westeros, I feel like crossing the sea slowed down her story a bit. Other than that: great read!

DAENERYS - 8/10

People often complain that her chapters were kind of a bore, but for me it was quite the opposite. For a long time she was our only window into Essos, she’s also quite observant and resourceful, so maybe she’ll help Tyrion’s POV become interesting again once they finally meet.

CATELYN - 10+/10

I ofter say that Sansa’s chapters are my favourite, but if I really had to make a choice, it’d be Cat. Her POV is captivating from the very beginning, and she takes us on such a journey! She’s our first window into the Vale, into Renly’s camp (where we meet Brienne and the Tyrells), into Riverrun and the Twins! We follow Robb through her eyes, we mourn Ned with her... She never stops being an interesting character with an eventful background, thrown into situations we wouldn’t be able to witness, weren’t it for her POV. You may like her, you may dislike her, but I’d say that the importance of her chapters is indisputable.

SANSA - 10/10

What can I say? I like her insight, she’s one of the most observant POV characters in the books (maybe because she doesn’t really have her own agenda - not in a bad way, she’s a child and a captive), which makes her less self-absorbed (especially in the later chapters). Yes, her first chapters in AGoT were a bit dull, and that’s why I’d choose Cat’s POV over hers in general.

BRAN - 7/10

I know it’s the weirdest thing to say about one of the most supernatural POVs, but I kinda preferred his Winterfell chapters? He proved to be a great leader (and I’m sure he will be a good king), but some of his later chapters blurred for me into a tight knot of “I’m going north, but sometimes I warg into Summer and hunt”. I hope we explore more of his abilities in TWoW, that’s something I’m really looking forward to despite not being particularly captivated by the deep north’s charms.

JAIME - 8/10

Entertaining, insightful, arrogant - and I’m talking about both Jaime Lannister and his POV chapters. He’s an arsehole with a terrific backstory, but also a walking disaster of a character. Pure joy. The only thing I regret is getting his POV so late in the books. I know it’d ruin suspense otherwise, but still.

EDDARD - 9/10

I love going back to AGoT and reading his chapters, pretending that I don’t know how things end for him. There are so many “main hero” tropes in his chapters, it makes me laugh. Oh well, it was great when it lasted!

THEON - 6/10

HATED his ACoK chapters, LOVED the ones from ADwD. I know that writing him as a dick was crucial to making his further story more heartbreaking, but I generally can’t enjoy vulgarity, objectifying women, describing characters having sex for 15 pages etc. That’s why I hate many Tyrion’s chapters, and that’s why Theon’s POV annoyed me at first. But damn, his inner struggle, his identity crisis, going back and forth from Reek to Theon... 10/10.

DAVOS - 6/10

Ah, good uncle Davos! I don’t know why I’m not rating him a bit higher, I do enjoy his chapters, especially because it’s through him that we learn more about Stannis and Melisandre in the earlier books. But... he’s such a boring character! :D (I know, I will have to whip myself later for writing this, feel free to send me strongly worded letters, I deserve it.) Davos’s POV works great as an exposition, but I just cannot force myself to care about him personally. Good dude, though.

CERSEI - 9/10

My queen, one and only. I think ASoS might be my favourite book, and that’s mostly because of her chapters. She’s vindictive, egoistic, jealous, unreasonable... and irreplaceable! I enjoy her slightly mellowed-down, cool-headed show version (one of the very few things that the show did right), but gosh, book!Cersei’s weak-arse schemes might be the most wholesome piece of literature, honestly. And the fact that her paranoia isn’t unfounded, that some of her frustrations are totally justified - all that makes her a character rather easy to sympathise with. She might not have the most insightful POV, but it’s certainly the most entertaining one!

SAM - 7/10

He’s a good boy, and an attentive character - his chapters are enjoyable, but not yet exhilarating. Looking forward to more Oldtown business to reevaluate.

BRIENNE - 8/10

I’m not even going to explain myself, her journey was the most enjoyable side-quest I’ve ever witnessed. Some people don’t like her chapters, and honestly, that baffles me more than liking Tyrion’s ADwD POV. :D

BARRISTAN - 4/10

For a famous white cloak, he really felt like a non-character to me. His POV was a-okay, but to be perfectly honest I was constantly paging through his chapters to check whether maybe Dany came back.

VICTARION - 4/10

I’m not a Greyjoy-stan and I probably can’t appreciate the nuance of some Greyjoy POVs, but both Victarion and Aeron read kind of flat. Don’t hate me.

ARIANNE - 8/10

I still don’t get how she was omitted from the show. Maybe she doesn’t become the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, but so many pointless characters from the books got shitloads of screen-time, and my girl Arianne got none? Are you serious? Freaking BRONN became the Master of Coin, and they decided Arianne shouldn’t exist?! And yes, I love even the almost universally hated “The Princess in the Tower” chapter.

ASHA - 7/10

She’d be higher, but there’s a lot of vulgarity in her chapters, too, and I basically don’t care for that At All. Otherwise she’s a dope character and deserves the Iron Islands.

QUENTYN - 6/10

No offence to homie, but he was a bit of a bore. A nice one, but a bore.

AERON - 4/10

See: VICTARION. He’d get even less, but at least we could experience the Iron Islands through his POV.

AREO - 8/10

I don’t see how any Dornish POV (as in being IN Dorne, not being FROM Dorne like Quentyn) could get any less than 7 points. I still think we got too few Dornish POVs, I demand amends!

JONCON - 8/10

I don’t even care about the plot (although he was one of the only two insights into Aegon’s storyline, that should count for something), I can’t with the amount of gayness in his Rhaegar flashbacks. 8/10, would recommend.

ARYS - 7/10

He was sweet, a bit naive, but I cannot go lower due to my Dorne principle (see: AREO).

MELISANDRE - 8/10

Surprisingly one of the most wholesome POVs of ADwD, pity it was just this one chapter. What with being a Red Priestess and all, you’d expect her to radiate more... numinous energy, but her chapter was one of the most iconic ones. I won’t give her a 9 just because I only have Ned and Cersei with those grades at the moment, and I think it should stay that way. (Oi, Ned/Cersei anyone?)

Prologues and epilogues not included.

Season 3 because there’s peak JB (for the show at least), a fair amount of Arya and Gendry, Ygritte and Jon, alive Robb.. (although there’s also that Talisa nonsense. oh and also the Melisandre x Gendry bs wtf was that.)

I think I watched season 1 pretty late.. in mid 2016 maybe? Watched the other 2 seasons when they came out so s3 would be last year.

How did you become interested in 3?

Random Episodes would play on TV when I was in school and a lot of my friends used to watch it. I watched the whole thing later in college though. Also my friend group in school was also 6 people so we did the whole ohh you’re the ross of the group, you’re the phoebe, etc. (i was ross and i didn’t like it).

Who is your favorite actor in 4?

they’re all great tbh but Rami Malek was WOW. Also Michael Cristofer, he was so much fun to watch.

Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?

GoT has been crap since s5, so I guess I’ll pick Jessica Jones, although if Witcher continues being this good in every future season it might move up the list lol.

Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?

Friends has 10 seasons with like, 20+ episodes per season, lol, so friends.

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?

idk if I want to be anyone in mr. robot, i mean they ended that show on a surprisingly uplifting note but literally every character went through so much shit... maybe flipper the dog? xDDD

Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?

Friends and Mr. Robot? LMFAO i really can’t imagine. (The technology difference, the characters -- although there WAS one sitcom-y episode in mr. robot but -- nah).

I was going to say Malcolm x Trish but then I realized they did have a few scenes.. So then it’s Claire x Jessica. (they only had one scene together i think but they were so good! and i wasn’t the biggest fan of claire x luke lol)

Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?

It’s too early to tell for the Witcher tbh, and I haven’t read the books.. There’s sooo much they haven’t explained yet, so I’m going to pick friends because tbh they ended it really well and it was funny till the end.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4?

GoT or Mr. Robot? I have a soft spot for the GoT music even though Mr. Robot is also pretty good.

Jon’s Resurrection: The Role of Ghost

On the show, Jon was resurrected by Melisandre, with Ghost standing by.

I wrote about this scene a long time ago.

I argued that Melisandre washing Jon and cutting his hair was a solve et coagula ritual. I also said I thought that the fan theory that Jon warged into Ghost when he was stabbed could well be correct.

Recently, I was going through the emblems in Atalanta fugiens and came across one (XXIV) I have never posted before that may provide a clue to how GRRM intends to write this scene in the next book.

There are two scenes here. You need to read the emblem like a comic strip, except front to back rather than left to right.

In alchemy, the King is the Philosopher’s-Stone-to-be. He must be “killed” so he can be resurrected, young and vigorous. The wolf is a symbol for antimony, the wolf of metals, the universal solvent, the mercurial water.

(Similarly, the dragon is a symbol for Mercurius at the beginning of the Work. Jon and Dany are both closely associated with animals that are symbols for the “lower, earthly self which the soul must learn to subdue and train, so that the higher self...may at last reign.” Lyndy Abraham, p. 60)

The caption for the emblem reads as follows:

The wolf devoured the king and after the wolf has been burnt, it returned the king to life. (Michael Maier, Atalanta fugiens, XXIV)

So in the foreground you see the wolf “devouring” the king--well, taking a little nibble at least. Then in the background, you see the wolf who devoured the king being burned, and in the process, the king is restored to life, young and whole.

This leads me to think that Ghost will play a critical part in Jon’s resurrection in the next book. GRRM can hardly have Ghost eat* Jon, but he can certainly take in Jon’s consciousness, his life force. The books spend quite a bit of time describing Jon warging into Ghost, so the precedent is there.

(*If you see a parallel between this Emblem and Little Red Riding Hood, who IS eaten by a wolf, you’re probably on to something. Notice how the revived King is wearing a cape, which should be red as a mark of his transformation into the Red King, the Philosopher’s Stone. What I don’t know is much the Grimms added to the folk tales they collected in 19th century Germany.)

But then what about the second scene? How do we get Jon alive again? To follow the emblem strictly, you’d have to have the Night’s Watch burn Ghost, somehow forcing Jon’s spirit back into his dead body. I guess that could work. But I prefer a scenario where Melisandre is involved, as on the show. But no matter what, Ghost will be in that room and I expect that the first clue we will get of Jon’s resurrection will be from the direwolf, as on the show.

I’m appending the entire discourse for Emblem XXIV, for anyone who can plow through the archaic English translation (the original is in Latin). I’ve boldfaced sentences that seem to apply to Jon, or might apply to him in the future.
