Happy New Year 2019! What a great year 2018 was! Every year I throw down some cider-braised pork and sauerkraut with mashers, a PA Dutch family tradition! In the charming Pennsylvania Dutch town of Hamburg, Pennsylvania, named after the city of Hamburg in Germany, I wouldn't want to do my laundry anywhere but at the poetically named Die Wascherie. Pennsylvania Ducth Hex Signs are commonly seen all around Southern Pennsylvania. It also has it's roots in my own family history and was a type of artwork my grandmother enjoyed. Many motifs can be found within these signs, including the popular hearts, tulips, other symbols of nature, and geometric designs. It is believed that these signs reflect the agrarian nature of the society they originate. While these symbols and designs often were representative of different things, they were also believed to ward off evil, offer protection, bring abundance, and more. These hex signs would be enlaraged and placed on the side of barns, but now can be found on a number of other buildings and decorations, including my fairy doors. My mother recalls blue, red, yellow, and white to be the most common color, but even the color holds some representation. This is a design the fairies and I came up with inspired by hex signs we were researching. Us Pennsylvania Dutch have a plethora of superstitions about the month of May. This month held many positive and negative intonations. It's a common held belief that collecting the first rain of May and washing your hair with this water would make your hair grow extremely fast and long. There's an entire ritual concerning the morning dew on May 1st, see my last post The month of May was considered an unlucky month particularly for getting married. "Marry in May and you'll rue the day" "Maid or widow married this month must expect ill luck" ~Being born in May was thought to produce a sickly child. ~Never buy a broom in May "Buy a broom in the month of May, sweep a family member away" ~Never wash blankets in May. "Wash a blanket in May, wash a dear one away" ~Cats born in May will bring snakes into the home. ~Taking baths in May is considered unlucky and even thought to bring death to the home.
