"can i kiss you?" megumi asks.

"no. you'll smudge the lipstick."

"maybe i want to smudge the lipstick." he frowns.

the poor boy has been nearly begging for kisses in the whole hour you've been doing his makeup. he has sat there with a small pout, letting you stroke brush after brush around his face. the little dabs of glitter shimmer on his cheeks. he's such a pretty boy.

"how about a quick kiss?" he sounds like he's begging.

there's an itch in his soul that he needs to... you know... scritch scritch. of course, with your remedy lips.

"no kissing. be patient."

"i'm already being patient letting you fluff brushes on my face. i feel like a canvas under an painter's hand."

"nooo kissing. be. patient." you smile. aw, that smile makes it even harder for him. your smile is the most irresistible aspect of you to him.

he bounces his leg. there's silence. you keep applying makeup serenely to his face and he looks to the side, forcing his vision anywhere but your pretty lips.

"can i have an air kiss at least?" he's got his lips parted for you to add a layer of sheeny shiny lip gloss.

"mwah." you blow him a kiss as per request.

his heart flutters. "thanks." there's a blush on his cheeks that the sheer foundation barely conceals.

"aw... you're blushing, pretty boy."

he grumbles. "i'm not a pretty boy..."

it takes all his self restraint to not kiss you and be patient. the way you parade your delicious, painted lips in front of him for the night makes him feel like a puppy beggingly drooling for a treat.

"can i kiss you now?" he asks, coming up to you with his hands behind his back. his tallness makes him cutely intimidating.

"no..." you tease with a smile. "be patient, 'gumi."

he groans so hard when he hears you use his favorite nickname, "gumi? really? in public?"

"yes, really, in public."

he groans again when he looks at your lips. it's like he's in pain at this point.

"you're killing me... just one kiss can't smudge lipstick that badly. come on. just a peck?"

you look at him, and look at his prettiness; makeup just makes him all the more kissable and yet you've been holding in your urges just to preserve lipstick. seriously?

he encourages by whining, "come on, i let you put aaaaall those products on my face... so you owe me compensation... with your lips."

"ah... okay.. one kiss then. just a light peck."

he dives in, you halt him warningly, "a light peck, promise?"

he nods, eyes wide with eagerness, "mhm."

and he definitely doesn't just give you one light peck. he smudges the lipstick on both his and your lips.

"megumi."

"sorry."

"come here."

"i'm sorryyy!"

"let me smudge my lipstick on you some more." you say, and tiptoe up to speck kisses all over his face.

oh boy, his heart neaaarrrrlyyyyy jumps out of his chest. he freezes up. it's like sometimes you're still his crush who makes him nervous and not his girlfriend.

you can bet that yuji and nobara die laughing while pointing at his face, teasing him for having kiss marks all over it. he doesn't mind the teasing; he's satisfied. in a daze after getting all that attention he so badly needed from you.

Greetings fellow human, I recently found you and I must say, I love your writing and especially the layout of the posts.

I might also suggest an Idea for you with Alastor.

How 'bout a very passionate painter reader getting their nightly inspiration and staying up all night, also listening to loud music. And maybe being a little messy with the paint, like it somehow ending up on the face or different unusual spots.

📻𖤐 The only thing he isn’t particularly fond of in regards to your passion, however, is how little sleep you’re getting because of it.

📻𖤐 Your sleep schedule is completely fucked because of how often you get inspiration while trying to go to bed at night, because of course you just have to get up and go paint it every time.

📻𖤐 Oh and how messy you can get whilst you paint… which Alastor doesn’t actually mind as much as he wants you to think he does.

📻𖤐 He can shake his head and tut about it all he wants but he can’t deny the fact that getting to clean you up is something he enjoys doing for you.

📻𖤐 Plus, it’s always entertaining to see all the peculiar places the paint ends up on you each time he does. From your cheeks to your arms to more unusual places like your ears… it genuinely never does get old in his eyes ♡

It was another one of those nights. You were lying in your bed, trying to get some sleep and all of a sudden you got an amazing idea for a painting !! You couldn’t help but get up to go bring your ideas to life on a fresh canvas :-)

You went on with your usual routine, playing some music as you got your stuff all set up. Once everything was ready, off you were into your own little world as you painted away at 2:30 at night

Fortunately and unfortunately for Alastor, your room was right beside his. The walls were quite thin in the hotel.. even so, the loud music blaring wasn’t exactly hard to miss but it was even harder to fully relax with it playing.

You usually stopped your painting at around 7 or 8 in the morning so he figured this was going to be a long night….. he sighed to himself and went back to reading for a while (or at least attempting to for around 10 minutes or so.)

Eventually he did recognize a song you had playing, you’d played it for him before. It was after his time but he did quite like the melody

That’s when he got an idea of his own. his undying grin growing slightly as he bookmarked his book, set it to the side and made his way next door to your room.

He knocked on your door three times, waiting outside of it patiently as he heard you set your painting materials down. His ears twitched slightly.

Once you answered the door he waltzed inside cheerfully, not giving you a chance to speak or ask why he was here.

“Salutations my dear!! Up to the usual, I assume?” Alastor would ask, taking a curious look at the canvas you had been working on before glancing back over at you.

You gave him a smile and nodded “Yeah.. got a little inspiration and wanted to paint it before I forgot it.”

“Hm. Well, would it be too much to ask to pull you away from your work for a while?” He raised a brow as he tilted his head ever so slightly to the side, offering you his hand; offering a dance. And honestly you weren’t too surprised.

With a giggle and the grow of your smile, you happily took his hand and let him pull you closer to him as you two began to dance to the song playing in the background, your little masterpiece-in-progress long forgotten as you swayed with your favourite Radio Demon.

𓇢𓆸 𝒶𝓂𝒶𝓇𝓎𝓁𝓁𝒾𝓈.

situated on a lush hilltop and overlooking the sparkling seascape, a lone stone cottage sits. externally, it's unassuming with its sun-bleached cobbles and circular windows. plum trees flank the seaside abode, and glass bottles in an array of spectacular colors are tied to boughs heavy with fruit. they sway in the summery breeze, singing a fragile melody that permeates stifling, sticky humidity.

inside, however, the home is as eccentric as its inhabitant. paintings, both finished and unfinished, line the walls, some hung and others propped, and the stone floor is mired in dry paint splatter. cloth curtains are parted to allow sunlight to filter in through large bay windows, offering a view of the glimmering ocean beyond. there is no second floor, merely a ground floor and a cellar, and so every room necessary to the layout exists here: a bathroom, a kitchen, two bedrooms, and the main, paint-spattered room. there is no television, but there is a radio and it rests on a windowsill as if it's a pie put out to cool. it details this afternoon's forecast between static crackles: clear, sunny skies with a zero chance of rain.

idyllic and isolated, this will be your new home. and a young man named amaryllis, the one who followed up with you in response to the listing he had posted, will be your new housemate. his standards for a companion were easy to meet: must be okay with messy workspaces (lots of paint). must enjoy peace and terrible internet connection (sorry in advance). must not mind sounds at night (bottles hung on trees make noise). must be good at running errands and doing light physical work. he was warm and friendly in the listing, what with his additional comment of i will provide you with plenty of plums should you need any. and with an eviction notice hanging over your neck like a guillotine's blade, he was a godsend. a godsend you'd snatched up the minute you found him, desperate to find a new place to stay before the end of the week.

his name is amaryllis. he's polite and accommodating, mostly quiet, and he's an artist. his hair is dyed a brilliant, fiery scarlet. when you questioned such a bold color, he offered you a tiny, nearly bashful smile and said, "everyone has a specific vision of what an artist should look like. i want to embody the kind of artist who is strange, but not quite strange enough to be ridiculed. more like...a strangeness that can be charming if looked at the right way. that, and the color matches the flower i'm named after."

he's so sweet and clearly passionate about his profession as a painter. in fact, it's how he makes a living. he's mostly housebound, so he paints all manner of artworks and sells them to the local museum in town. they proudly display his work in pretty frames with even prettier placards. amaryllis was humble in his explanation, but you think it's a very impressive talent of his. he should brag about it more often. when told that, he chuckled and shook his head. boasting, according to him, is not an appealing facet of humanity. you stuck your tongue out at him in reply: "if you have skill, show it off. why hide?"

why hide indeed?

you work at a tea shop in town. in the summer, it's bustling with activity. tourism keeps the island afloat, and so you're never spared the stress of a midday rush. although amaryllis insisted you needn't work so hard to pay rent, you argued that you'd feel like a leech if you didn't. so in the mornings and late into the afternoons, you make deliveries for the shop and work behind the counter. it keeps you active, and it's enough to provide you with rent and grocery money for amaryllis. sometimes your boss permits you to bring home some of the imported tea. you share it with amaryllis; he's fond of bittersweet, herbal blends.

amaryllis never paints the same thing twice. landscapes must have notable differences, even if he's only ever peered out his window to paint the slivers of the sea he sees between the plum trees. it's harsh criteria, but you suppose many artists are similar when it comes to the tribulations of creation. he paints the most delicious-looking still lifes. plums show up in a lot of these—the only similarity you'll ever find between his paintings. you asked him about it, ever the curious one, and he offered a thin smile and a cryptic answer: "plum blossoms symbolize hope. in a world where we're always racing against an invisible clock, i want to have hope. and what better fruit to symbolize that than plums? they're delicious and nutritious and, better yet, fun to paint."

you sat beside him, admiring the splotches of green giving way to an azure sky on what was once a pristine canvas. plum blossoms bristle in an unfelt breeze. amaryllis shudders through a brutal coughing fit. he does that a lot.

amaryllis owns a motorbike. it was a gift from a friend who sent it to him when he bemoaned not having the capabilities to see one firsthand so that he could try his hand at sketching it. your jaw had dropped when he wheeled it out of the cellar onto the grass, huffing and trembling like a fawn on unsteady legs. the unveiling was grand, even if it was just you and him at the peak of a hill, surrounded by plum trees and swaying bottles. it's a sleek, purple vehicle that looks practically new despite being aged by years.

"and," amaryllis says, puffing his chest out after catching his breath, clutching the tarp close, "purple like a plum."

"i'm starting to think you're fond of plums."

"they're my lifeline."

"you say the strangest things."

"like a true artist! see? now you understand the appeal of the weird, don't you?"

you open your mouth, shut it, and then snort. before you can stop yourself, you're laughing. under the shadowed shade of the plum trees, amaryllis smiles wistfully.

"i have no need for it. i'm also not very good at painting vehicles, so it's yours to use. now you won't have to pay bus fare."

"or walk the twenty minutes to the stop," you add, grinning.

"that, too."

wind rustles through the grass. it tugs on your clothes, bringing with it fleeting scents of summer sea salt. you intend to say it first, but he beats you to it.

"thank you."

"what for?" odd. you should be the one saying that.

"for being here. it's nice to have a friend in all of this isolation." he turns his glacial gaze seaward. "perhaps i'm burdening you, but i just didn't want the house to be cold and empty when i..." he hums, contemplative, and corrects himself. "i wanted to know what it felt like to surround myself with company who cares. they told me i had five years and that i'd be lucky to know even one of those... but it's been two and so far i'm really grateful for my luck. if it wasn't for that and plums, i never would have met you."

at first, the meaning leapt over your head like a horse over a vertical. you almost replied with, "and if it wasn't for my eviction notice, i never would have searched for a housemate," but then it hit you. and it hit.

it hit hard.

"oh. oh, amaryllis..."

his eyes showcase stories his lips don't dare speak. frigid and sharp as ice one moment, and the next they're weak and watery. he disguises his sniffle in a poorly feigned cough.

"i spent the first year wallowing in pity and hatred. the world is the worst, but then so am i. i thought things like that. i wanted good health. i wanted to walk and run long distances. i wanted to leave this island and travel to a big city. i wanted to ride a motorbike and feel the wind grabbing at my clothes and hair. most of all, i wanted more time. i never know how to use it correctly, and i was always getting lost in my drawings so that i could ignore it. but when the sun sets i'm reminded i'm losing days." he scuffs his slipper against the grass and forces a laugh. "i guess i grew out of the bitterness. it's easier to swallow a plum-flavored pill than it is to try choking down mean sentiments. i think that now."

"i... i'm sorry."

as soon as it leaves your lips, you feel overwhelmingly stupid. you have a million things to say to him, and yet none of them can be properly phrased.

"there's nothing to be sorry for. it's not your fault."

"but..."

"it's not so sad anymore, so please don't fret." he gestures to the bottles swinging on the branches, each clink an echo of something forlorn. "i put these up to keep death away. i can't outrun him, but i can scare him off with loud noises." this time, his smile is hopeful. "and if two years is enough proof, i think it's working."

you watch him in silence. how he can smile despite being crushed by the weight of time—by the unfairness of the world—you'll never understand. for a while, the two of you stand there and watch the bottles in the plum trees. blue, green, yellow, purple, brown, orange... they're in every shade imaginable. every shade except red.

when amaryllis recovers from his most recent coughing fit, his fingers are curled into fists. red, you realize, is not a color he's fond of, even if it's the color he's chosen to dye his hair. red is a color you can find in his palms, imprinted like a stain, a permanent reminder of incurable frailty.

the ride to work is made in a daze. you don't even realize you're thirty minutes late. funny how time works.

"if you could have anything in the world, regardless of how expensive or strange it might be, what would you choose?" amaryllis asks this one starry night. the two of you sit near the sea on a patchwork quilt, listening to the distant splish-splashing of fish in the sea. the moon casts a silver spotlight on a quiet, evening tea party.

teacup in hand, inhaling a flowery aroma, you consider his question. "i'm sure i have something in mind, but right now i'm drawing a blank."

amaryllis nods his understanding. "i would want more time." you try to soothe him with something better than an apology, but he's quick to add, "not to live! but to paint."

"aren't those essentially the same?"

"not quite. when i paint, i'm alive and well. things outside of that are stagnant and almost...dead. or should i say unfulfilling? loneliness is more painful than death itself. well, that's what i think."

"wouldn't you get bored after so much painting? what would you even paint with all of that extra time?"

having been moon-gazing for the entirety of that exchange, amaryllis turns to you. he smiles. "you."

"me?"

"there will never be enough time to truly capture all of you." he glances at the ground, his finger tracing swirls and loops in the sand. "your habits and mannerisms. your smile. the light in your eyes. the way you get so worked up when it's too humid. every part of you that's so you—i couldn't begin to attempt to portray all of it in so little time."

"then don't. i'd rather you spend your time doing something comfortable and less...stressful."

"it's never stressful painting you."

"you've been painting me?"

his smile falters. "i..." he clears his throat, suddenly awkward. "i have. yes. i... i'm sorry."

"hey, it's fine! no need to apologize just... why haven't you shown me? i'm flattered, you know."

"it's embarrassing and...strange."

you quirk an amused grin. "isn't strange what you want to be?" you lean in close and he jerks away so quickly it's comically cute. "a strange artist who can be charming if looked at properly. that's your ideal vision for an artist, right?"

"of course. but..." he sighs, his shoulders deflating. "i don't paint people often."

"but you painted me."

"you're an exception."

"does that mean i'm not a person? or...am i like a fruit or something inanimate?"

"maybe." his eyes shine with mischief. "maybe you're neither. maybe you're an angel."

"please." you roll your eyes, snorting around the rim of your teacup. "i'm not an angel. i'm just me."

"the beauty of art is that you can glamorize and romanticize the mundane. like doing laundry! it becomes far more appealing when it's put on a canvas." he's traced an inescapable maze of lines into the sand. you miss the next part, for it's spoken so softly. as if it's forbidden sin. "when i put you on my canvases, you're an angel. my angel."

under a velvety blanket of stars, you think you hear whispers in the wind. you shrug them off and down the rest of your lukewarm tea.

angels are not unknown to amaryllis. in fact, there's a room in the cellar, designed to be secretly accessible to those who know of it. he's named it "the angel room." for the first few years of his childhood, he was in perfect health. and during those treasured, bygone years, at a small primary school in the center of the island, he met his angel. you don't recall him now, for he was yanked from school in his third year, destined to be homeschooled for the rest of his slowly deteriorating youth, but he's remembered you. you left an impact as all angels often do.

rather than feathers and halos and white silks, you adorn yourself in things that are you. your smile. your eyes. your laughter. your kindness. these things cannot be bottled or replicated, nor can they be plucked from your back to ensure you'll never fly again.

a school portrait is framed in the angel room. the class is small, comprised of just eleven students, and of those eleven two faces are circled—yours and his. it's the only photo he has of you and him. the rest were taken by someone who was paid handsomely to travel the distances amaryllis can't reach to capture you on film. for the sake of creativity. for the sake of imprisoning the muse. for the sake of being strangely charming. a dying man's wish carries more weight when life's gifts are not guaranteed. subtle manipulation works best when weaved into a sob story. canvases line the walls. none of them are finished. they're all attempts to paint you perfectly. no matter how hard he tries, he can never get it right.

it's unfortunate and frustrating, but then he can't change it. the world has dealt him a cruel hand, but he can be crueler. he can be greedy and cling to the time he has left. he can be selfish and keep you in his reach, shackled by way of circumstance.

it's fate, or so he thinks when he recalls all the time spent in a lingering infatuation, hoping for a day in which he could meet you in person after so much time apart. sometimes the world gives him sorrow. this time it's given him an angel. for as long as he lives, amaryllis will keep this angel to himself.

time means everything when it's limited, but for today and tomorrow and the foreseeable future it's all he needs to feel some semblance of relief from the ever-encroaching unrest of the inevitable.

sometimes amaryllis catches himself thinking how much better it would be if he could take you with him. it's wrong and terrible, but then it would be fair.

he's never known fairness. he's never known romance. he's never known the joys of life. but with you, his angel, he knows it all and so much more. and for that he is forever thankful.

December 10, 2023 Update from the Battleship Texas Foundation

"DRY DOCK TOURS

SHIP REPAIRS

TORPEDO BLISTERS (COMPLETE) - The new torpedo blisters are a slightly different design and square off at the bottom below the waterline. This design change will make the new blisters easier to maintain increasing their longevity.

SANDBLASTING - The ship’s hull is now being sandblasted at night and inspected for holes and damage during the day. The necessary repairs are made before the final coating is applied.

HULL NUMBER - The new hull numbers have been extensively researched so each number is not only the correct font, but applied in the appropriate position it was in 1945. Welders have created an outline where that will be painted on in the future.

SHIP’S NAME APPLIED - The lettering for the ship’s name has been cut from steel plate and has been attached to both sides of the stern. A ton of work and research went into getting the correct font and positioning.

COATING - The inside of the blisters, and the ship’s hull will be coated to protect against possible corrosion.

TANK CLEANING - Tanks inside the ship are being inspected, cleaned, and repaired if need be. Some will be coated with a marine coating to help prevent future corrosion.

AFT FIRE CONTROL - New steel deck has been added to the levels of the tower. The doors on both sides have also been added back. The space is being prepped for the windows and more to return the structure to how it looked in 1945.

Animation Night 125: Peter Chung

Hiii everyone, it’s Thursday! And it’s a multiple of 5, which means it’s time for something ‘big’. Which is to say... full circle back to the creator whose Aeon Flux started this whole thing, Peter Chung~... one of my favourite directors.

But! We’re not here to watch Aeon Flux again this time! [Though if you wanna read about Aeon Flux, go check out Animation Night 52]. We’re here to watch the other works of Peter Chung! Such as Alexander Senki aka Reign: the Conqueror...

You see, Peter Chung is one of the few people to have the experience of directing both anime and western animation. The insights this gave him, related once upon a time on the anipages forums, were one of the seeds of what would become the ‘sakuga fandom’.

But let’s start at the beginning. Here’s a picture of Chung via imdb...

He was born in Seoul in 1961, the son of a guy in the foreign service, which meant his childhood was spent travelling all over the world (Wikipedia lists Seoul, London, Nairobi, Washington, D.C., New York and Tunis). Eventually they settled down to migrate to the USA, in Virginia. I’m not exactly sure when Chung got the animation bug, but it was early enough to send him to CalArts, where he attended their experimental animation program.

At age 18, he graduated CalArts joined the animation industry, working for the Spanish painter Salvador Bru. You can see some of Bru’s abstract paintings here; I haven’t been able to track down any of his work in animation. In any case, within a year Chung landed at Hanna-Barbera, working on character design, and also working with Ralph Bakshi [Animation Night 63] on layouts for his barbarian movie Fire and Ice (1983).

At this point he apparently got scouted by Didney for feature development, although which features he may have developed is not entirely clear. He also has layout and art direction credits for a couple of franchise works from this mid-80s period, such as The Transformers (1984, animation outsourced to Toei) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987, animated at an American studio then called Murakami-Wolf-Swenson, now Fred Wolf Films), and some less well remembered ones such as C.O.P.S., a bizarre animated spinoff of a reality show following cops on the job, and Ring Raiders, a toyline-driven show promoting toy aeroplanes.

Chung’s major break came, so far as I can tell, when he designed the characters for the inaugral Nickoledeon show Rugrats (see Animation Night 31 when we watched the Hanukkah episode), in which a group of children play in elaborate fantasy worlds. The show was a huge hit, although it was still a few years until Chung got the opportunity to create something purely according to his vision in Aeon Flux. In the intervening period he got to work on the post-apocalyptic superhero show Phantom 2040 (1994), once again on character design.

Then came Liquid Television, and Aeon Flux. Aeon Flux stood out amidst Liquid Television because its animation could easily have belonged a mainstream show... if it wasn’t horny philosophical science fiction, heavy on ambiguity. But by the same token, it’s specificity won a lot of die-hard fans (like me).

Since there are a number of interviews out there, let’s get some of Chung’s own words on what went into it...

O: You tend to broadly exaggerate your characters' physical characteristics, especially their height and their musculature—is there any particular symbolic or aesthetic reason?

PC: That's a hard thing for an artist to try to analyze. I could kind of try to pick it apart, but the simple truth is, that's the way I draw. I mean, I can tell you about my influences—my favorite artist is Egon Schiele, the German Expressionist. If you look at his drawings, they're very economical, very expressive. The first time I saw them, I thought they were perfect for animation. So I did make a conscious effort to try and adapt that approach to drawing. The other thing is… I was going for a style, when I was doing Aeon Flux, that was much more dependent on expressive drawing as opposed to lots of surface detail. In Japanese productions, they like to put a lot of highlights and shadows on things, to make things look very rendered. Each drawing has to stand out individually as an illustration. Having been trained in American animation, I wanted to have characters that were very realistic, but not so loaded with detail that they were going to be hard to move.

O: Your characters, both in Aeon Flux and in Reign, tend to dress in a way that's half formalized costume, half fetish gear. They often don't wear much, and what they wear is elaborate and stylized. What are your fashion influences?

PC: Well, I struggled a lot, when I was doing Aeon Flux, with how far to push the costumes, and how realistic to make them. I think a lot of illustrators realize—and you see this a lot in American comics as well—that if you draw costumes realistically, it's very difficult. You end up spending all your time trying to create believable drapery. So the tendency is to draw skin-tight costumes that mold around the body. This allows you to use the body more. You see this with classical sculpture, and dancers. You try to use the expressive qualities of the human body more—that's why sculptors prefer to work with nudes, as opposed to trying to make the clothing look accurate. Otherwise you end up concentrating on the clothing and not the person. The same is true with animation—I think of my animated characters as dancers. I want to be able to use body language as much as possible.

Chung’s comments here are interesting, in that his talk of forgoing highlights reminds me of the kagenashi approach taken by Mamoru Hosoda - in both cases, putting less complexity in the static drawings to allow for more motion, but still strongly influenced by the more solid drawing style of anime instead of the more 2D graphical approach of most American TV animation. Chung’s style of lanky anatomy with exaggerated bumps and details is uinstantly recognisable; only Robert Valley, directly inspired by him, is all that similar within animation.

What about Egon Schiele? Let me show you some of his paintings...

Alongside Schiele the German expressionist, Chung cites a whole lot of influences; lemme pick out some of the ones we’ve talked about on here...

I don't consciously model my style or techniques on any particular body of work. I try as much as possible to draw from personal experience and observation. I'm inspired by the work of other artists, mostly because they show me how good it's possible to be at practicing one's craft. They would include, in no special order:

David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, Alexandro Jodorowsky [Toku Tuesday 27], Michelangelo Antonioni, Alain Resnais, Jean Cocteau, Allain Robbe-Grillet, Seijun Suzuki,

Osamu Dezaki [Animation Night 95], Yoshiaki Kawajiri [Animation Night 25, Animation Night 67], Yoshinori Kanada [Animation Night 62], Moebius [Animation Night 71], Kazuo Umezu [author of The Drifting Classroom, whose adaptation we watched on Toku Tuesday 19],

Egon Schiele, Horst Janssen, Frank Lloyd Wright, among others.

On comics, he’s pretty down on the state of the American industry, describing it as largely divided between heavy-handed narration where the illustrations feel gratuitous, and artistic flexes with weak story. He describes his aspiration to communicate the feelings of the characters visually, without being heavy-handed. So while I’m citing influences, lemme pull up Peter Chung’s favourite comics...

Here is a list of my personal favorite comics stories in no particular order. My choices are based as much on mastery of narrative form, as on originality of conception. Each of them appear to have been impelled by an inner vision; they are not comics inspired by other comics, but rather by dreams, obsessions, yearnings.

I love Aeon Flux, but I’ve talked at length about it in the past, so let’s not spend too long on it here, since tonight the focus is on what came next!

In 1998-9, four years after Aeon Flux, Chung got his chance to work in anime - and not only work in anime but on a series co-directed by Rintaro (Animation Night 53, AN 62, AN 67).

So. Alexander Senki began life as a series of light novels by Hiroshi Aramata, a prolific and widely talented natural history researcher and novellist known otherwise for the occultist historical fantasy novel Teito Monogatari. Alexander Senki tell the story of Alexander the Great, but projected into a futuristic scifi setting.

For the animated version, Madhouse went for an international approach, and invited Chung to come in and design the characters and settings for a 13-episode TV anime, later compiled into a 90-minute film. Much of the animation was outsourced to the Korean studio DR Movie - one you’ll see frequently in the credits of recent anime, but I believe this was more novel at the time.

Chung commented on the experience in the above interview...

Peter Chung: There are many ways I could answer [what it’s like to put a particular stamp on a work he’s not directing], I suppose. In this particular case, it was different from a lot of other shows I've worked on as a designer. I've done a lot of work in the U.S. as a character designer, but in Japan, it's much more of an auteur role, where they really want your individual style on a project. In the U.S., it's much more collaborative. What was good about Reign was that they really liked the idea of things having an eccentric, personal style. And for me, that was great. A lot of that has to do, usually, in animation, with the ability of the animators to adapt to the drawing style of the designer, and they did a very good job, they tried very hard, to follow my original drawings. Whereas often, in American productions, they will try to simplify or adapt a designer's drawings to what the animators can draw.

O: Do you prefer the auteur method over working collaboratively?

PC: Well, as a designer, I like having the freedom and the license to design the way I want. So for me, working with the Japanese is better, at least from a designer's point of view. Now, working from the point of view of an animator, I think the animators had a lot of difficulty adapting to my style.

Animation-wise, Alexander Senki draws on the familiar techniques of Madhouse’s OVAs: limited animation and multiplane effects with moments of more complex animation. But Chung’s character and environment designs give it a particular flavour that makes it feel very different to most Madhouse works, really underlining the significance of a character designer to a project. The result, which takes a wander through the story of Alexander with a lot of philosophical musing was... polarising, but if you like Chung’s style, very appealing.

Since I cannot find the movie and it’s said to cut too much anyway, tonight my plan is to show 3-4 episodes of Alexander Senki - enough to give a taste. Because then the question is, what did Chung do next? He got a little more anime work, animating the credits to Party 7 - a live action comedy film which also Takeshi Koike on the map for its title sequence. Years later, Koike would make a spectacular tribute to Aeon Flux as an ad for the cancelled computer game...

And then we get the third entry in the ‘Aeon Fluxlike’ canon: Chung directed a segment of the Animatrix (Animation Night 6, long overdue for a rewrite though!). This was his first time working with significant CG - something he found a much more fluid process than traditional animation - and he was brimming with ideas, many of which ended up cut. Nevertheless, his entry is effective - pretty much just ‘what if Aeon Flux but the Matrix’, featuring a machine in a virtual environment designed to persuade it to defect. Chung says...

I mean, how many variations can you do on the story of someone suspecting that he's living in a simulation, then waking up? I decided to take a radically different approach and view the world from the point of view of the machines. After all, a robot would be more susceptible to delusion than a human. Also, I wanted to show that the human mind is just as capable of creating a rich and seductive dream world as a computer is.

And after these three splendid creations, what did Chung do next? I think most people if asked would draw a blank, since he kind of fell off the radar. Aeon Flux was adapted into a feature-length movie, originally described as more of an art film by director Karyn Kusama, but it was taken out of her hands and heavily re-edited by the studio into a very generic sci-fi action movie. Chung had little involvement, and was heartbroken at the result:

With apologies to both Phil and Matt-- who have publicly been effusive in their praise for the show-- the movie is a travesty. I was unhappy when I read the script four years ago; seeing it projected larger than life in a crowded theatre made me feel helpless, humiliated and sad. (...) I know that the studio made a lot of cuts against the wishes of the writers and director. Most of the cuts concerned further development of the secondary characters. Since my main problems are with the portrayal of Aeon and Trevor, I doubt that I'd have liked the longer version much better. I didn't when I read the script, and there are definitely some things I'm glad WERE cut-- like Catherine's pregnancy. Maybe the makers didn't understand the source material and thought they were being true to it; or they understood it, but didn't think it would appeal to a wide enough audience and altered it to suit their presumed target. They claim to love the original version; yet they do not extend that faith to their audience. No, they will soften it for the public, which isn't hip enough to appreciate the raw, pure, unadulterated source like they do. (...) Presuming to know what an audience wants to see and tailoring the product to fit is a method that sucks all the drive I'd have to ever create anything. It's self-defeating disingenuous. I'm not naive about the realities of making unconventional films in the arena of "mass entertainment". It's possible to make good unconventional films; it's also very hard. In any case, if you're going to risk failure, I say do it boldly, with conviction. The problem with the movie is its failure of nerve.

But Chung never seems to have gotten the chance to direct a wholly original project again. The remainder of his work is adaptations or franchise work, with various big productions reaching out to him to put a stylish auteur’s spin on their IP.

The first of these is a short film bridging the gaps between the two Riddick movies.

Riddick? Riddick is a series of sci-fi action movies featuring Vin Diesel as a space criminal. I admit, I haven’t seen them! They weren’t especially successful at the time, but became cult films, kind of present in nerd culture back in the 2000s... and kind of forgotten since. The first movie, Pitch Black, sees Riddick and co on a pilgrim ship which crash lands on an alien planet, where they have to survive. The second, The Chronicles of Riddick, opens with Riddick in hiding from bounty hunters. However did he get there? Telling us is Chung’s job!

The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury is a 35 minute short animated film, created at Universal Animation Studios, which specialise in direct-to-video films. This was the first time that Chung worked with Robert Valley, who would later become well known for his two films in Love Death and Robots (Animation Night 99); fortunately this being a franchise entry does not overwrite that distinctive Chung/Valley style, as seen in this distinctive fight scene animated along with Jorden Oliwa and Lee Hong. It’s full of cool distorted perspectives in the drawings and distinctive layouts.

Chung next appeared three years later, on another franchise spinoff, titled Revisioned: Tomb Raider, a compilation series bringing on a variety of comics artists and writers to put their own spin on the game. This was supposed to be the first in a whole series of Revisioned projects based on games, but in the end it seems only one was ever made. Chung provided designs and scripts for the first three episodes. They’re all available on Youtube, starting here...

Videogame spinoff animations have a curious quality: they tend to have exceptionally lavish animation with all the videogame $$$ coming in, but often feel quite limited by being a promotion - more on that when I talk about Trigger’s Cyberpunk anime sometime soon. I’ll be interested to see how Chung handles this one.

Another three year gap later in 2010 and Chung directs his only feature-length film, Firebreather, adapting an Image comic about teenagers battling kaiju in CG. It sounds honestly... pretty plain by Chung’s standards, without much to distinguish it in either animation or the energy of the story. It seems to have disappeared without really making a splash.

In 2012 comes another brief videogame promotion, this time for Diablo.

In both this and Tomb Raider, Chung seems to have moved away from his earlier unshaded style; this one especially skews much more to ‘Western animation taking after anime’. There is, sadly, very little of that Peter Chung flair to be seen, and honestly I wouldn’t have guessed he was involved: it’s just a string of fight scenes.

The next year, Chung started working as a teacher at USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he remained ever since. It’s not quite the end of his creative output in animation, since he did produce the titles for Victor and Valentino (2019), most likely because the author of the original comic book sees him as a huge influence and asked directly. And that’s it, basically! A complete slice through the creations of the Aeon Flux guy...

What’s the plan tonight? Essentially the cross-section of Peter Chung works presented above: we’ll watch a fair chunk of Alexander Senki, and then have a look at everything since. If people are in the mood we might even rewatch a bit of Aeon Flux!

A long time ago. In a galaxy far, far, away called Toronto.

I had a standard upbringing in a small house on Cadillac Ave., although I did get to take a lot of arts and crafts classes while growing up. When I was 11 years old, I took my first animation class at the Art Gallery of Ontario led by Oscar winning NFB animator Eugene Fedorenko. I continued the animation classes for the next five years. By 11th grade, I had pretty much made up my mind to pursue animation as a career. As soon as I completed high-school at Earl Haig/Claude Watson School of the Arts, I was accepted at Sheridan College's animation program. The three-year program became a two-year program shortly after I started working at Toronto's biggest animation studio, Nelvana (a right of passage for most Canadian animation students). I soon received an offer from the Los Angeles division of Don Bluth's animation studio. California had been a dream of mine that miraculously came true a lot sooner than I thought. That was the summer of 1989. What I thought was going to be a position as a clean-up inbetweener, I soon found out was really for a trainee-animator position thanks to John Pomeroy. I worked my way up over the following six months to an animator's position where I stayed for three years and two more pictures. In the early part of 1992 I had the opportunity to sculpt animation maquettes at Bluth with Kent Melton which got my sculpting career off to a good start. In the summer of 1992 the Burbank studio shut down operations and I began my freelance career. During the last 10 years I've worked for many different studios on many different projects: most times animating; sometimes storyboarding, doing layouts, or character designs. In 1995 I bought my first computer. It was a "speedy" 133 mhz, and I used it to shoot my pencil tests and do some web-graphics work in Photoshop and Painter. The computer has since become an integral part of all my work. It was also that same year I met Darci, the girl I married. We own a house here in Burbank, where the garage has been completely converted into my art studio. That is where I go to work every day, and on many nights. It's about thirty feet from my kitchen and tends to be only a couple of miles from the studios for which I work. Just the way I like it.

New York - September 2023

Just back from a long-anticipated return to Armory week festivities in the Big Apple. Fueled by the pent-up excitement following a self-imposed two-year hiatus and not deterred by the sweltering heat and overcrowded New York streets, the art viewing experience was over the top - fantastic fairs, surreal MoMA moments and great gallery shows. Stopovers included: The Armory Show, Independent 20th Century and Art on Paper fairs; a pilgrimage to the MoMA; and a half dozen or so gallery visits.

The Fairs

The Armory Show held court as the centerpiece of the two-day jaunt. While the fair has long been part of the city’s cultural landscape, bringing together the world’s leading contemporary and modern galleries in the revamped Javits Center elevated the fair-going experience for all stakeholders. Art fans, exhibitors and artists have all benefited from the move two years ago from Piers 92 and 94. While the art is ultimately what matters most, venue counts as well, and creating an atmosphere where art fans can best appreciate wonderful pieces and exhibitors can best showcase their artists is important. With its outstanding gallery lineup, topnotch presentation space and user-friendly layout, The Armory Show delivered on all fronts.

This year the fair assembled over 225 leading international galleries representing more than 35 countries and over 800 artists. Along with the revitalization brought about by the venue upgrade, the show’s focus has also evolved to having a more contemporary and emerging artist bias where previously older post war painters also shared the spotlight. With that change, the crowds also seemed to get younger, less staid, and more eclectic, all making for a vibrant and exciting ambiance. Some highlights included: Landon Metz’s organic flowing shapes in “Untitled”, 2023, dye and canvas, diptych (40 x 64 in.); Mario Martinez’s abstract expressionist inspired “Inside, Outside”, 2004, acrylic and charcoal on canvas (86 x 133.5 in.); and Nicole Coson’s imprinted found objects in “Untitled”, 2023, oil on linen (79 x 51 in.).

The vibe at the Independent 20th Century fair was more reflective and subdued but also enjoyable in a different sort of way. Set in the historic Battery Maritime Building, the focus of this 35-exhibitor show was to celebrate unsung artists that applied their trade between 1900 and 2000. Donning the walls were works of lesser known heroes such as Jack Tworkov, James Brooks and Midred Thompson, among others. The fair highlights included three large scale works from Paul Feeley featuring his archetypal jack-like forms set in a colour field backdrop, namely, “Vespasian” and “Germanicus”, 1960, and “Untitled”, 1961, each oil-based enamel on canvas.

Art on Paper was staged on the courts of Basketball City on Pier 36 and celebrated its ninth edition with a 100-plus gallery roster featuring top modern and contemporary paper-based art. The atmosphere was light and lively and lent itself well to the creatively used to highlight the fair’s signature medium. Highlights included: Eric Stefanski’s earnest and satirical “Im Fuckin Trying”, 2023, oil and graphite on paper affixed to panel in artist’s frame (44 x 34 in.); Gigi Mills’ “Night Sail and Shephard”, 2023, oil, paper and crayon on paper (43.5 x 38 in.); and Alyssa Salomon’s “Time & Place for Considering Optimism & Sunlight”, 2020, cyanotype on Abaca/Kozo paper (38 x 25 in.). A showstopper also included a collection of six exquisite Michael Loew cubist nudes, 1951, india ink on paper on board (each 9 x 6 in.).

The Museum

The MoMA experience kicked off with early morning access tothe Ed Ruscha / Now Then exhibit. The show surveyed six decades of output and featured over 200 works in mediums including painting, drawing and photography. Peppered throughout were many of his easily recognizable images mined from Los Angeles iconography such as the Hollywood sign, Standard Oil stations and the Twentieth Century Fox logo. Equally impactful were the word paintings reflective of guttural utterances he came across in his day-to-day activities. Special pieces among these included: “Honk”, 1961-62, oil on canvas and “Oof”, 1962, oil on canvas.

The Ruscha exhibit then flowed into a pilgrimage to several extraordinary works in the MoMA permanent collection. These included: Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Cans”, 1962, acrylic with metallic enamel paint on canvas, 32 panels; Jasper Johns’ “Flag”, 1954-55, encaustic, oil and collage on fabric mounted on plywood, three panels; Jackson Pollock’s “One: Number 31, 1950”, 1950, oil and enamel paint on canvas; Henri Matisse’s “The Red Studio”, 1911, oil on canvas; Pablo Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”, 1907, oil on canvas; and, Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night”, 1889, oil on canvas. While these works are all very familiar and are plastered on everything from mugs to T-shirts, a firsthand visual of their mastery is a magical reboot and a reminder of their greatness.

The Galleries

Memorable gallery exhibits visited outside the fair circuit included: John Zurier “On the Back of a Mirror”; Caroline Monnet “Worksite” and Ellsworth Kelly “Ellsworth Kelly at Gemini: An Exploration of Color”. Standouts among these included: John Zurier’s dreamy “Langspil(Echo)”, 2023, oil on linen (25.6 x 19.6 in.); Caroline Monnet’s biological experiment “Depredation”, 2023, mold on gypsum board, 15 parts (each 13 x 13 in.) and powerful “In Silence We Speak Volumes”, 2023, oriented strand board, acrylic (47 x 47 in.); and Ellsworth Kelly’s stunning “Red Curve (State ll)”, 1988, 1-color lithograph, edition of 15, #3 (26 x 84 in.).

While art fans were scurrying about to the various venues sharing the New York City stage with sportsfans who were in town to witness Coco Gauff’s crowning achievement, on the other side of the world in the Philippines, hoopsters were being treated to a different brand of basketball at the FIBA World Cup, the toughest albeit not glitziest of international hoops tournaments. When all was said and done, the gold medal went to Germany who outlasted Serbia in the finals while Canada upset the USA in an overtime thriller for the bronze. That was a historic finish for Canada on the FIBA world stage and a major disappointment for the USA who fielded an all-NBA team - true, maybe not the best of the lot and three players were out with an undisclosed illness (bad pancit, maybe), but still, a great victory for Canada thanks to standout performances from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who was named to the All-Tournament team and bronze medal game MVP NBA villain par excellence Dillon Brooks. Another huge positive stemming from the tournament was the show put on by Dennis Schröder who led the German team to the top podium finish. The speedy and crafty guard was named FIBA World Cup MVP and will be bringing his talents to Toronto. Let’s hope Flash can carry over his success to the Dinos as he steps into the prime ball handler role vacated by Steady Freddie’s departure. Something to look forward to.
