Actually kinda glad Peachleaf Valley is getting delayed until spring 2023. I feel like it's art quality is on par with "triple A" JP otome (which is why I'm interested as I'm a weeb through and through).

This fall, there's a lot of JP otome competition coming out already like Amnesia, Piofiore FD, Lover Pretend, and maybe otome fans are still catching up with the recent Birushana and EiT releases.

Q1 2023 is seeing some weaker titles like Paradigm Paradox and Winter's Wish (at least I'm not interested at all for these lol and the ratings are meh on them on vndb too). We don't know when the higher anticipated otome like Shuuen no Virche and Radiant Tale are coming out either but I suspect after after Q1 2023.

So yeah this is my mini essay on why I think spring 2023 is a good release time for Peachleaf Valley to attract otome fans who tend to play JP-only games.

The beginning of the demo had me in my feels because I fully understood MC, but aside from that, the game is beautiful, the characters are hella charming (like all the suitors and villains are snacks, send help), and the overall premise is super intriguing.

No drop date as of yet, but regardless, I am super excited to dive in. 🙌🏾🌻🌷

Anytime I talk about an otome game that I don’t like (especially Diabolik Lovers) people would get upset at me and say “than go play Code Realize” which, if you’re only using Code Realize as an example for good otome games, than that’s an issue, because I’m sure there are many good otome games out there. lolotheparagon introduced me to HEART A LA MODE and Peachleaf Valley, and those are pretty wholesome games. Also, Bustafellows exist and is a better version of Collar X Malice, there I said it. Another otome game I like is Gensou Manege, but not as an otome game, since it has a problem other otome games have; the protagonist is underage, while most of the love interests, aside from two, are legal adults. The Psychedelica series is also good, but they don’t work as otome games either, because A) Aside from one, the other love interests suck in the first game, and B) the second game literally involves incest or pedophilia in all of the routes. Anytime I find a good otome game, it usually comes with a lot of problems with them, and these problems are genuinely bad to deal with. These problems range from love interests who don’t treat the protagonist well, sexism (cough Yuma Katagiri cough), pedophilia and ephebophilia, incest, love interests who met the heroine who was a child while they were a teenager or adult, teacher x student relationships, abusive love interests, stalking being accepted in some games, the infantilization if virginity, and more. I’ve rarely come across an indie otome game with these problems, and the only one I can think of that does is Cinderella Phenomenon. I’ve heard good things about Belle Automata, so that’s good. Sorry for rambling, but the point is that there are other games other than Code Realize that are good.

I’ve been in Steam hell for the past two weeks. (X_X) I had a huuuge vent written here but I decided to delete it and spare you all. However, there is one important thing you must know.

While searching for aid, I came across news from 2019 I had no idea about. If you want Steam to support a Mac build of your game, you have to pay Apple $100 a year for an app developer membership. As a Mac user, I’d seen messages warning that Steam games won’t run on Catalina and above. I’d also noticed indie games like Peachleaf Valley and Our Life not having Mac builds on Steam, but having them on Itch.io. Suddenly, it all made sense! I had been blaming Steam, but turns out it’s just Apple trying to make even more money off everyone. It doesn’t help that my Mac is incapable of running SteamPipe, the app you need to upload your game! Yeah, it’s looking like I’m gonna have to make the switch to PC if I want to keep pursuing game development.

So PSA to fellow game devs, if your spirit Pokemon is a Slowpoke like mine and you didn’t know this info, now you do. As for where I learned this info, credit goes to Lewd Pixels.

And to the future players of BCB...we have decided we will only be pursuing a PC build on Steam. However, PC, Mac, and Linux builds will still be available on Itch.io. I would never want to cut off all of the Mac/Linux users since I fall among those ranks.

Yknow, dating sims sure do make up the wildest shit to justify you dating standard anime guys. Hey, do you want to date actual historical figures (Napoleon, Vincent Van Gogh) but as vampires? How about you get isekaied into the middle of a fantasy civil war with the warring armies representing different Alice in Wonderland characters and Wonderland is actually a generic fantasy kingdom and btw you are the reincarnation of Alice for some reason, oh hey you want to date these mafia guys in 1920s Italy but Mussolini is not mentioned (almost as if what’s the fucking point setting this game in Italy) Or what if you want to date modern Japanese cops? BUT DONT WORRY ALL COPS ARENT BAHHHD. Do you also want to discuss the inherent corruption in the police for- Hey, you wanna play as a time-travelling reporter who finds a wholesome found family with her studio-mandated male harem? Sure, but after we spend two hours failing to tackle drug trafficking and illegal immigration and using trauma for shock value. What about a game where you play a woman who suffered amnesia and is trying to piece back the fragments of her past with her chosen boyfriend and you have to rekindle your relationship with him? Nah, lets leave all her characterisation to a pixie flying in her head and make her harem consist of an abuser, a serial rapist, her math tutor and a terrorist. Theres one where you play as a librarian who got kidnapped and sent to the palace and is forced to sign a royal contract where you have to MONITOR 1 OUT OF 12 PRINCES to see which one should be the king cos the brothers are split into two parties on which one should be king and only the woman can choose cos apparently the contract need some pure hearted woman to be an unbiased party?? WHATT. There's a game where you play as a literal living doll with poisonous skin who's the clone of someone's long dead daughter being abducted by a fancy thief and now lives in steampunk London to start a new life BUT OOOHHH IT TURNS OUT YOU HAVE A SECRET LITTLE BROTHER WHO REVEALS YOU WERE THE 666TH CLONE EVER EXISTED AND IT TURNS OUT YOUR CREATOR DAD HATED YOU WOOOOOO SCARY!!! QUEEN VICTORIA IS THERE AND ALSO A TERRORIST WHO WANTS TO NUKE GREAT BRITAIN WITH THE MC'S POWERS AND A MAGIC TREE. (well at least they were accurate in Britain's vampiric levels of colonisation) OH AND APPARENTLY THE SOURCE OF YOUR POWERS COMES FROM A HEART SHAPED PHILOSOPHER'S STONE EMBEDDED IN YOUR CLEAVAGE.

There's another game where you play as the female reincarnation of Cupid (So Aphrodite, then?) and you are sent to Earth to be a matchmaker and you would think someone whos a literal love goddess would be very worldly, snarky and doesnt fall for any traps men pull in dating BUT NOPE SHES JUST AS DAINTY AND NAIVE AS EVERY OTHER VISUAL NOVEL PROTAGONIST. WHAT ABOUT A GAME WHERE YOU PLAY AS A WOMAN WHO JUST TURNED 18 AND BECAUSE SHE IS THE LAST OF HER "WHITE" CLAN SHE HAS TO GET A HUSBAND AND EVERY TIME SHE DATES A PERSON FROM A DIFFERENT COLOURED CLAN HER HAIR GETS DIFFERENT HIGHLIGHTS AND ALSO THERES A RIGID CASTE SYSTEM IN THE WORLD BASED ON THE COLOUR OF YOUR CLAN AND THERE IS DISCRIMINATION AND PREJUDICES AGAINST THE CONSIDERED LOWER COLOURS, SO MUCH SO IF A HIGHER COLOUR CLAN PERSON DATES A LOWER COLOUR CLAN PERSON, THEY GET BANISHED INTO THE UNDERWORLD. COS THATS WHAT DATING SIMS NEED! CLASSISM, RACISM AND EUGENICS! THE WHOLE FUCKING NINE YARDS.
