Hey book dragons! So I got some awesome book mail! @penguinteen was so awesome to send an ARC of Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt and I will be honest this book sounds really good. Can’t wait to start it this weekend! 🪴🌿✨🕯️🌿✨🪴🌿✨🕯️✨🌿🪴 Here is a synopsis of what the book is all about! A teen girl looking for the truth about her missing mother forms a reluctant alliance with her former best friend...in exchange for hiding him from his cult-leading family. Wil Greene’s mom has been missing for over a year, and the police are ready to call the case closed—they claim she skipped town and you can’t find a woman who wants to disappear. But she knows her mom wouldn’t just leave…and she knows the family of her former best friend, Elwood Clarke, has something to do with it. Elwood has been counting down the days until his 18th birthday—in dread. It marks leaving school and joining his pastor father in dedicating his life to their congregation, the Garden of Adam. But when he comes home after one night of after a final goodbye with his friends, already self-flagellating for the sins of drinking and disobeying his father, he discovers his path is not as virtuous as he thought. He’s not his father’s successor, but his sacrifice. For the woods he’s grown up with are thirsty, and must be paid in blood. Now on the run from a family that wants him dead, he turns to the only one who will believe him: Wil. Together, they form a reluctant partnership; she’ll help him hide if he helps her find evidence that his family killed her mother. But in the end they dig up more secrets than they bargained for, unraveling decades of dark cult dealings in their town, led by the Clarke family. And there’s a reason they need Elwood’s blood for their satanic rituals. Something inhuman is growing inside of him. Everywhere he goes, the plants come alive and the forest calls to him, and Wil isn’t sure if she can save the boy she can’t help but love. 🪴🌿✨🕯️✨🌿🪴🌿✨🕯️✨🌿🪴 #bookstagram #bookworm #book #booksbooksbooks #bookstacoven #bookstagrammer #bookarc #togetherwerot #booklover #booknerds #bookaddict #thedarklibrarians #penguinteen https://www.instagram.com/p/CqZXd63LTAR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello book tumblr!!
I’ve been a Netgalley reviewer/Penguin Teen influencer for two years now. The only problem: I only posted my first review today. Between senior year and my dad’s death and then starting college, I didn’t have the time nor headspace to dedicate to book reviews.
However, I have some time now, so I’ll be posting reviews here, and on Netgalley!! Expect to see more of them in the future. That’s all!

🪡 BLOG TOUR + BOOK REVIEW 🪡 I'm thrilled today to be hosting a spot on the blog and bookstagram tours for THE SEVERED THREAD by @leslie.vedder, hosted by @tbrbeyondtours! This book releases on 7 Feb from @razorbillbooks @penguinteen. Thanks so much to the publisher for my copy! I had been wanting to read The Bone Spindle ince it came out, so when I saw this tour opportunity, I jumped at the chance to participate. I read TBS and The Severed Thread back to back, and what a ride it was! This is one of those rare instances -- rare, at least, for me -- where the second book in a series surpasses the first. I don’t want to say too much so as to avoid spoilers for either book, but I loved going on more adventures with Shane and Fi so much! Shane and Fi are so great together, and I loved seeing their relationship develop into a partnership based on trust and, eventually, true friendship. There is also romance, and while there is instant attraction between Fi and Briar and between Shane and Red, it’s really not instalove -- both relationships are allowed to develop over the course of two books, and I can’t wait to see where they end up. I enjoyed the adventure aspect of TST even more than I did TBS, which is saying a lot! And holy cow, the cliffhanger ending of book two has me biting my nails and wishing I had book three in my hands right now! If you are a fan of fairy tales, retellings, gender swaps, fractured tales, budding romance, fierce female characters, puzzles, and good old adventure, you should pick this series up! I would literally recommend this to any and every reader. Btw if you're pissed about the Hachette Book Group suing the Internet Archive, you can tell them how you feel. The least we can do is tell em we don't like what they're doing and that we'll take our business elsewhere (🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️) if they actually manage to burn down the library:

✩♟️💕Review:
*Thanks to @penguinteen and @ever-so-ali for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
Who knew Ali Hazelwood would be the one to get me interested in chess?!
“Check & Mate” follows Mallory Greenleaf, a former chess player working as a mechanic to support her family. Eager to leave the sport and the destruction it caused in the past, she plays one last charity tournament. Only, she manages to beat Nolan Sawyer, the current world champion and bad boy of chess. What follows is the opportunity to continue playing for sorely needed cash prizes and cross pawns with her fiercely attractive competitor. That is, so long as she can protect her family from the game that wrecked it.
I want to begin by saying that I agree reviewers that are saying that this book is new adult and NOT young adult. The characters are 18 and 20. Mature language is used. Sexual content is referenced. Please keep these factors in mind before reading.
Considering that this is an NA debut, Hazelwood is successful in branching out into this space. I adored Mallory, Nolan, and their rivals-to-lovers romance. The pacing of their relationship contributes to the ease with which I tore through this book. I feel like Mallory and Nolan truly started out as competitors too absorbed in their rivalry to entertain the idea of a relationship before finally giving in to their attraction. I devoured every single page.
I also really loved the depth of the characters in this book! As the eldest child in my own family, I really connected to Mallory and the pressure she feels to take on more responsibilities, set an example for her younger siblings, and step in as another parent of sorts.
As with her other books, Hazelwood explores the ways women are treated in male-dominated spaces. In this case, she does so by putting the chess world under a microscope. Going into the book, I knew next to nothing about chess, but Hazelwood made it easy to understand and digestible. It just worked and now I feel empowered to try my hand at it.

Yoooo it's the cover for my next book, THE BREAKUP LISTS! With illustration by Be Fernandez and design by Kaitlin Yang. Coming your way April 2, 2024. You can read an excerpt at PenguinTeen!
From the back jacket:
Love is more complicated than “boy meets boy” in bestselling author Adib Khorram’s sharply funny new romantic comedy, set in the sordid world of high school theater. The Breakup Lists is coming to shelves April 2!
As a techie–a stage manager, a lighting guy, a jack-of-all-theatrical-trades– Jackson Ghasnavi is not a fan of the spotlight. And he isn’t too fond of romance, either, ever since his actor ex-boyfriend decided he was too cool to date a techie freshman year.
Jackson’s sister Jasmine, on the other hand, loves love. It just doesn’t love her back. But luckily for her, Jackson is always waiting in wings when she gets her heart broken, ready to cheer her up with a breakup list cataloging of all her ex’s faults.
Enter Liam Coquyt: senior, swim captain, hot white boy—and the surprise lead in the fall musical. Even more surprising than how incredible Liam is on the stage is how much Jackson likes spending time with him off it.(Not that Jackson is falling for him. Liam is probably –no, definitely–straight.) So why is Jackson crushed when Jasmine sets her sights on him? And why does the idea of eventually drafting a breakup list for Liam feel impossible?

Vampire Academy Timeline Project:
I am up to The Golden Lily.
Edit (10 Apr): I'm going away on 12 Apr and won't be back until 24 Jun. I won't be taking my books with me and I definitely won't be finishing Bloodlines before I leave, so unless I can borrow copies while I'm away, this project will likely not be finished until July.
Edit (24 Apr): I made the mistake of watching the old book trailers PenguinTeen made for TGL-TRC last night and now I'm sad I can't keep reading... going to try and find an online copy.

★ What books with royals drama would you recommend? I haven’t read Prince Harry’s Spare yet (in fact I am 799th in line with one of my libraries 🥴) but I do love reading about messy drama between fictional royals, and at the top of that list is @katharinemcgee’s American Royals series. I still need to read Rivals, but secrets and lies, forbidden romance, petty differences, questions of succession, on-the-edge-of-your-seat OMG moments … these books have it all. They’re like candy for the piece of my soul that craves drama. 🙊 Have you read American Royals yet? ★ HASHTAGS // #katharinemcgee #americanroyals #penguinteen #royalsbooks #tbrcart #bookcart #bookrecs #rainbowshelf #yabooks #bookphotography #instareads #bookobsessed #booksbooksbooks #beautifulbooks #prettybooks #goodreads #bookhoarder #bookhoarder #bibliophile https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnfg9isSYZ_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🦇 Thieves' Gambit Book Review 🦇
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐💫
❝ "Knowledge is control." ❞
❓ #QOTD If you could have one wish, what would it be? ❓ 🦇 Ross Quest is a master thief at age 17, specializing in escape plans and keeping anyone outside of her family at arm's length. A plan to run away for a short break from her legendary family goes haywire when her mother gets caught, leaving Ross to gather an impossible sum to save her. Desperate, Ross enters the Thieves' Gambit; an international heist competition that promises the grand prize of win wish to the winner; a wish she could use to save her mom. With the stakes higher than they've ever been, can Ross bring herself to trust another thief, or will she con them all?
[ Read my review below or on Insta | Storygraph | Goodreads ]
💜 Thieves' Gambit is fun, action-packed, and thrilling; everything you would expect from a heist. Kayvion Lewis keeps readers on their toes with twists and changing alliances, ensuring the pacing never slows. The story is plotted out like a film, leaving very little space for filler scenes (great for the pacing, but unideal for development). Each character is well-written, interesting, and dynamic, their hidden agendas and backstories adding to the intrigue. Even with the stakes so high, the heists are engaging without seeming too childish. With every heist, Ross learns a little more about herself in the process (though her character development isn't quite as strong as it could have been). There's also a light romantic element, though it never overshadows Ross's motivations or development. The dialogue is full of quick wit, moving just as quickly as the plot. Lewis manages to balance the coming-of-age issues (namely, trust, friendship, and self-identification) typical of most YA novels without abandoning the action-packed plot.
🦇 Though the novel is categorized as YA, the prose feels a little too juvenile at times. It also lacks strong descriptions that could have grabbed readers and dragged them through the thrill of a heist. With so much going on at such an intense speed, it's difficult to linger on small details that would have amplified the intensity. Unfortunately, that also makes it difficult for readers to empathize with the intense emotions Ross experiences during the game. A little more focus on "show, don't tell" would have bumped this up to a five. In a way, the story felt like it was written from a script, focusing more on dialogue and action than on imagery or emotions.
🦇 I'm also a bit disappointed in the heists themselves; namely, Ross's final heist. As a huge fan of the heist genre, I've read and watched enough media to know you should have a plan A to Z (Hardison usually dies in plan M...if you know, you know). You should always assume the plan is going to fail (to quote Leonard Snart, "Make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan."). Ross and the other competitors always seemed shocked when a plan went haywire. Some of the plans were too simple, while the final plan felt too easy (this big bad organization has safeguards throughout the entire competition, but allowed a bunch of teenagers to derail them?). The excitement of a good heist is watching savvy characters get themselves out of a domino effect of messes, all while stealing their score without the mark or audience realizing it. Instead, the final act felt rushed to get us to the cliffhanger (likely to hook readers before Netflix's production is released).
🦇 Recommended to fans of Six of Crows, Little Thieves, or the Inheritance Games.
✨ The Vibes ✨ 💎 Ocean's Eleven / Leverage Vibes 💎 YA Mystery/Heist Thriller 💎 Betrayal 💎 Slow Burn Romance 💎 Soon-To-Be-Movie 💎 First of a Duology
🦇 Major thanks to the author @kayvionclewis and publisher @penguinteen for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley. 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
