Finnrey! I ship the Bffs while I Reylo. TFA
Let's be clear I love FinnRey and I understand the possibility of them being romantically was set up. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were set up as the heroes of the new trilogy and they had wonderful chemistry. More than that, it was clear they enjoyed working together. John Boyega confirmed that JJ Adams developed Finnrey even more as he watched John Boyega and Daisy Ridley friendship develop.
Tumblr media
Everything in the galaxy was beautiful. Hopeful. We saw two strangers become two friends willing to die with one another. We saw a boy meet girl. Girl stand up for boy. Boy stand up for girl. They go on an adventure together.
...... then this happened.
Tumblr media
And Reylo took over the world. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver have dynamic and sexual chemistry. Even with just about three scenes that they have in the movie they left quite an impression. They single handedly sent the trilogy on a different course than initially planed. That wasn't the only thing to happen. Reylo became a lightning rod for both love and hate. Thus began Reylo vs Finnrey. In between all of that was frustration over Finn being sidelined and mistreated. Sadly, I don't think many Star Wars understand the essential element that was Finnrey, nor understand their relationship. FinnRey are soulmates too, they're not just romantic. Rey's destiny laid elsewhere.
Another important point. Finn has become quite famous, even to my mother who never watched the movies, for screaming "Rey". This on top of his non-sexual friendship with Rey somehow made Finn deemed "A Simp" by the Star Force Bros. Or, he's a black man following a white woman around. It's insulting, simple minded and goes against storytelling.
FinnRey as told in The Force Awakens
While Rey and Kylo introductions are meant to represent ying yang, Finn and Rey introductions are meant to highlight their similarity. Finn is a stormtrooper. A child kidnapped, conditioned and employed as a sanitation worker with a side hustle of fighting. Rey is a scavenger. A child abandoned to work for Unkar Plott and live a lonely and isolated life. The glasses Rey uses in her work are taken from a Stormtrooper uniform. The first we see of Finn is in his stormtrooper uniform. They are both in white.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finn as a character is earnest, brave, loyal and quick to form friendships. While he initially only helped Poe because he needed a pilot to flee the First Order, he doesn't take Poe's life for granted. When he finds out Poe made it out of Jakku alive, he's genuinely happy.
Rey, despite what people think, does have a character. Rey is guarded, lonely, impulsive, resourceful and independent by circumstances not choice. When these two collide it's because Finn see's Rey being attacked and feels compelled to help her. BB-8 tells Rey that the jacket Finn is wearing is his owner's so naturally Rey thinks he stole it. She mistake him for a resistance fighter and he goes along with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naturally both Rey and Finn seem interested in one another at first. Suddenly this dashing, handsome, resistance pilot falls in your lap and walks with you on an adventure.... girl, you see what's what before you say no. You could say the same for Finn. We're not given much information about his upbringing as a stormtrooper, but his initial reaction to meeting this brave, pretty girl is to form a bit of a crush. We've seen in Rey's introduction that she fantasizes The Resistance. She's got a resistance doll and she playfully wears a resistance helmet.
In the movie, we're given more of a hint that there is an romantic intention from Finn's perspective such as when he asked if she had a boyfriend, cute boyfriend. In the novel, it's clear she does notice his attractive appearance, "And she’d found a new friend who, unlike BB-8, was flesh and blood. In fact, **after getting a good look at him, he was quite..."
Tumblr media
But the moment she and Finn are pushed back into action, Rey loses her sentiment and simply bonds with Finn as a person. Rey is actually annoyed she's been marked by the Stormtroopers simply by being near him. Finn keeps taking Rey's hand as he leads her away from danger hahaha something that she really loathed. A moment of shift is highlighted in the novel when there's an explosion behind them on Jakku. Rey is the first to orient herself and when she checks on Finn, the first thing Finn does is ask if Rey is ok. This is all Rey ever wanted... someone who cares about her. This is what shifts her from being dragged along to actively helping both her and Finn survive.
Finn and Rey actually form a beautiful and deep bond very quickly mostly because they start off together. Both of them are out of their environments with literally one person that's really in step with them. Can you blame them for latching onto one another?
As they flee in outer space, they learn one another's name and get to know one another better. We as an audience get to see that both are complimentary to each other and already more open. When Han Solo captures the Falcon both continue to seek to protect one another.
Tumblr media
While Finn and Rey both try to flee the First Order and encounter Han Solo Finn's goals haven't changed. While at Maz's canteen? Finn's announces his goal to flee the First Order and Rey is shocked when he 'abandons' his mission with The Resistance to find refugee in the outer rim. "Rey sat at Maz’s table, stung by Finn’s departure. She had saved his life multiple times, and yet he had dumped her like an empty blaster cartridge. She chided herself for thinking he would be different. If her short life had taught her anything, it was that those close to her would abandon her. That was the way of the galaxy. Best to live alone and look out only for number one. Then you wouldn’t get hurt. Then you would survive. So why did she suddenly find herself going after him?"
It's in this moment that Finn finally reveals the truth about the fact that he's a stormtrooper and not apart of the resistance. He tells the story of his rebellion. "I made a choice. I wasn’t going to kill for them. So I ran. Right into you.” Finn’s voice broke, but he quickly recovered. “You asked me if I was Resistance, and looked at me like no one ever had." That! Right there! Finn saw a chance to be something else in someone's eyes and took it. He ask for Rey to come with him (maybe she should have hahaha) Rey wants to continue on with her mission to get BB-8 back to the resistance, while Finn runs off with a crew to seek refugee in the outer RIM.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I cannot say this enough. Finn doesn't give a damn about the resistance. Nor does he cares about fighting the good fight. At least not in the first film and most of the second. When Maz's place is attacked by the First Order. It's his affection, loyalty and respect for Rey that motivates him to stand up for himself and confront his fears. When Rey is kidnapped in the sprint of his life Finn tries to save her. When he concludes that Rey was taken to First Order base he goes straight there with the help of the resistance, even going as far as deceipt, to rescue her. He faces off with Kylo Ren, the greatest threat within The First Order, in order to defend Rey and himself.
Han Solo – “How do you know how to disable the shields?
”Finn – “I don't. I'm just here to get Rey.”
Han Solo – “You sure you're up for this?”
Finn – “Hell no. I'll go in and try to find Rey.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile while Kylo Ren is interviewing (side eye) Rey he takes a peak into the emotions of Rey concerning Finn. "Hmm…," Kylo Ren murmured softly. "You've met the traitor who served under me. A minor annoyance grown larger than he deserves. You find him more than tolerable." He drew back slightly, bemused. "You've even begun to care for him. A weakness, such distractions." Yeah, the boy is in her heart.
Tumblr media
Then there is the moment when Han, Chewie and Finn find Rey on the First Order Base. "Whatever the Wookie had uttered caused tears to well up in her eyes. Having never found himself in such a position before, Finn was unsure how to respond. Knowing well her inner toughness he wondered what Chewbacca had said that could have inspired such a reaction. "What'd he say?" She sniffed and wiped her face. That it was your idea If he had been unable to find the right words with which to respond before, her reply, combined with the look she gave him, reduced him to a state of temporary aphasia."
It cannot be underestimated the importance of Finn on Rey's overall development. Rey’s spent her whole life waiting for her family to come back for her on Jakku, knowing really the whole time that they never would. Finn coming back for Rey after she was captured is the first time in her life someone has cared enough for her to come back for her. He cares about her, he fights for her, he came back for her and never asked for anything in return. The two of them have a friend, a genuine friend, probably for the first time in their lives and despite the fact that neither of them know much about friendship..... they make great friends.
Tumblr media
It's also really cute how Finn gave her his jacket to wear while out in the cold.
It does have to be mentioned that originally in The Force Awakens novelization there was suppose to be the beginning of a romance. The authors recalls being asked to edit the book. One request that “bothered” Foster while writing “The Force Awakens” was to remove the romance he was setting up for Rey and Finn, played by Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in the film. The two characters are not romantically involved in “The Force Awakens” movie, but Foster said Abrams’ screenplay was “obviously the beginnings of a relationship” between Finn and Rey.
In the forest while Kylo Ren's real bone to pick is with the traitor/Finn ultimately Finn stands against Kylo Ren to protect Ren, facing his fear by doing so.
Tumblr media
Likewise Rey stands against Kylo Ren to protect Finn who had just been injured by him, facing her fears by doing so.
Tumblr media
In the end Rey was prepared to die with her friend Finn as she stood by his side before being rescued by chewie.
Tumblr media
Their initial chemical reactions to meeting each other wear off quickly, replaced by a brother-sister companionship. They are the first positive relationships in each other’s lives, and while they certainly form a bond, it’s not a romantic one. Onto The Last Jedi.
Tumblr media
It was time to go. Leaning in to him as closely as the pod would permit, she kissed him softly. "We'll see each other again my friend. I believe that."

Zoe Saldana stars in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"SOURCE: MARVEL
That’s not to say Marvel — along with all studios and streamers — doesn’t face some hurdles going forward. But the nature of those obstacles for Marvel are frankly pretty obvious; it’s mostly things Marvel has overcome before; and regardless of those issues and the need to address them, Marvel is still actually doing pretty good right now even amid the problems they’ve had.
So let’s just unpack what’s really going wrong, and what it means for Marvel Studios.
The situation with actor Jonathan Majors — the star of several Marvel films and streaming shows, as the MCU’s time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror — is that he faces multiple accusations of abuse, and is scheduled to stand trial for one recent case. After that case was initially reported, other accusations surfaced, as did previous public statements from years ago by performers who asserted accusations of abuse were already circulating about Majors.
So yes, Marvel will almost certainly recast Kang. Lucky for Marvel, the character literally exists across a near-infinite number of alternate realities where he takes different forms and changes appearance. Likewise, Marvel has had to recast characters in the past, just like lots of other franchise or TV/streaming series. This isn’t brain surgery, and the framing of this issue as something that could sink Marvel’s whole future plans is frankly nonsense.
Just one great example, Marvel could offer the role to John Boyega (who I’d argue should’ve been the top candidate for the role in the first place). Or maybe Denzel Washington as an iteration of Kang who sat out the in-fighting and collective efforts of the rest of the Kangs and grew older and wiser as he made his plans to take over. Or maybe Ray Fisher could be offered the role, if Marvel wants to poke DC and WBD while scoring a great casting option.

Or perhaps Marvel could offer the role to Leslie Odom Jr., Lakeith Stanfield, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Daveed Diggs, Stephan James, or any number of other fantastic casting choices to take over the role of Kang in the MCU.

The point is, the worst part of the situation with John Majors is if the allegations are true and women suffered this abuse while Hollywood ignored it. The casting “problem” is small potatoes by comparison, and is easy to solve.
So let’s look at the financials now, since a central claim to the “Marvel is in trouble” narrative is that the studio is struggling at the box office while streaming is an unpopular mess.
At the box office, it’s true Marvel hit a high point with their back to back releases of the two-part Avengers conclusion to the Infinity Saga. The $2.79 billion from Endgame and $2 billion from Infinity War elevated the final global gross for all 22 films in that saga to more than $20 billion, for a per-film average of around $935 million.
In 2018 and 2019, the MCU put up the following numbers: Black Panther hit $1.34 billion, then Infinity War topped $2 billion, then Captain Marvel scored $1.1 billion, and then Endgame took $2.79 billion. Ant-Man and the Wasp at $622 is the only MCU film in those 24 months that failed to top $1 billion.
Since the Infinity Saga ended, Marvel’s releases have taken north of $8.1 billion across 10 movies so far, with a Multiverse Saga per film average of about $815 million. The difference between $815 million and $935 million is not insignificant, but nor is it disastrous, and it’s certainly not hard to understand why it’s happening.
The 2018 and 2019 slates for the Infinity Saga benefited from a decade of build-up, and it was those last four (out of five total) blockbusters topping $1-2 billion each that provided the final heft and resulted in an even higher per film average. We are only in the first half of the Multiverse Saga to date, and so far we haven’t had a single Avengers movie in this new saga, while as noted the Infinity Saga ended with a one-two Avengers punch good for more than $2 million per film.
And then the fact of the Covid pandemic alone accounts for most of the rest of the downturn in Marvel Studios’ average box office performance. Even during the Covid pandemic, when films were flopping or going straight to streaming/PVOD, Marvel’s three releases that performed “badly” due to the global health crisis still managed to finish between $379.7 million on the lowest end and $432 million. That’s better than the DCEU can perform even after theaters reopened and box office started its climb back toward something resembling “normal” — at least for the right films, since 2023 has been a roller coaster ride for theatrical.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed earlier this year and wound up the weakest performer of that franchise at $476 million, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scored blockbuster results with $845.5 million.
Indeed, Vol. 3 is currently the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2023, both domestically and worldwide. And for the record, as disappointing as its box office was, 2023 has been so cruel to theatrical releases that Quantumania is still a top-10 box office performer.
We’ve seen one would-be blockbuster tentpole after another face-plant or otherwise disappoint, and often when a tentpole has managed a healthy box office performance it’s at a more moderate level than expected or typically enjoyed by the given franchise and/or its prior financial trajectory.
Other than Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, nothing else truly put up top-tier results this year. Fast X topped $700 million, but is fourth film in a row from the series to suffer a decline from its predecessor’s box office gross, and the lowest box office for the franchise since 2011’s Fast Five, so it’s a mixed bag there.
Besides that, 2023 saw three films in the $500-600 millions range, four in $400 millions territory, and a couple of $300 millions.
The makeup of the top 10 this year looks like this: Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Little Mermaid, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Elemental, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Notice, there are three Marvel superhero movies in the top 10. Yes, one of them underperformed, but the point is that it seems silly to talk as if audience are in any widespread or large scale way turning away from superhero cinema, or that Marvel is somehow reeling from a downfall and have lost control.
The Marvels is currently tracking toward a shockingly low debut this weekend, with most projections pointing to a $130-$150 million global opening. Without at least average holds, the film could struggle to get past $300-400 million. On the other hand, I think tracking has proven pretty unreliable these days, and I believe a significant part of these disappointing numbers is the fact a lot of people are confusing this film with being another new Disney+ Marvel show, or think it is coming to Disney+ as a film soon. There’s also the general 2023 ongoing curse to consider.
But regardless, The Marvels should’ve been a home run sequel. While we can point to the unethical shenanigans and toxic behavior of fans and of certain organized hateful online voices obsessed with attacking women-driven movies or shows, if this film flops or underperforms rather than merely suffering a downward adjustment consistent with the genre overall (which would mean a box office for The Marvels in the $700 million range, I’d say), then it’s entirely fair to call it a big stumble for the studio.
The large-scale tainting of superhero cinema by the DCEU’s overarching failure the past several years (eight films in a row across five years, all failing to reach $400 million and averaging in the roughly $250 million range) coinciding with the Covid pandemic and theatrical downturn, coupled with a leveling off — not uncontrolled free-fall or any other hyperbolic situation — of Marvel’s must-see “event” status in the aftermath of their 11-year Infinity Saga’s conclusion (and lack of any Avengers team-ups for four years and counting) has no doubt reduced the dominance of the superhero genre and audience’s previous high-level anticipation.
But that sort of heightened “event” status is impossible for any franchise or genre to maintain, and no serious person expected the genre or any one studio’s piece of it to be some perpetual ever-increasing profit machine
Neither Marvel nor the genre in general need to treat the usual ebb and flow of primacy in entertainment as if it’s some major crisis threatening the existence and profitability of the studio or genre. That’s just the natural clickbait mentality driving entertainment journalism. We should be able to report on and assess such situations without resort to exaggerated portrayals for melodramatic purposes, nor parrot claims from those with obvious incentives and ulterior motives behind any of that sort of hyperbolic claims. We know better, but that doesn’t mean the profession behaves better, and so we get clickbait and studio drama delivered up like silly reality TV, and everyone pretends not to recognize it as the nonsense it usually is.
Marvel has to recast a major lead actor, something we’ve seen plenty of times by studios and projects, including literally by Marvel themselves on more than one occasion. Marvel’s first two films of 2023 grossed a combined $1.3 billion in box office. Even if The Marvels only does about half the box office of Captain Marvel — a vastly bigger drop than the Ant-Man franchise experienced, but let’s just use a 50% dramatic decrease to make the larger point — the MCU will have grossed a total of about $2.45 billion for 2023, an average of $815 million per film.
If that figure sounds familiar, it’s because I mentioned it earlier since it’s the per-film average for the MCU ever since the end of the Infinity Saga. Marvel settled back a bit from the high per-film average of $935 million, and for four years we’ve consistently seen this same new average level of performance for their films. Again, not insignificant as a drop, but in context it’s easier to understand and recognize as not a sudden emergency situation, and I suspect most studios would be happy if they could average north of $800 million per film on average every year.
And let’s face it, once the latest Avengers movies hit the radar, we’ll see the average per film gross go up during those years, just like always, and in the long run if the two scheduled Avengers movies play at the $2 billion level, that will actually result in an increase in the final average per-film gross for the Multiverse Saga, just as those huge Avengers box office grosses at the end of Infinity Saga seriously raised the saga’s per-film average.
This is all fairly predictable, within an obvious margin of error but not frankly too far of deviation. Which doesn’t negate the fact of the downturn in average performances, but rather puts it into less histrionic perspective as solvable problems for a still overwhelmingly successful studio that’s seeing per film averages still far superior to what any other studio can claim.
On streaming, where audience trends and preferences have likewise evolved during the Covid era, Marvel
First we got the ABC broadcast series: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Inhumans. Want to take a moment to recall how did those all fair with audiences and critics?
Then came Netflix's slate, with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher — half of those got mostly good or great reviews, a couple got mixed to negative reviews, and along the way different seasons of a given show had their ups and downs. Many fans and reviewers bemoaned the general lack of tie-in to the cinematic releases, a point that's amusing in light of how the same reviewers and fans completely reversed course a few years later to bemoan the fact the newer MCU shows often try to tie in to the MCU.
So next up are The Runaways and Cloak and Dagger, shows with younger casts and less direct connection to the rest of the MCU, but both were short lived and appeared on two different streaming services.
Which brings us to the MCU shows on Disney+, overseen by Marvel Studios itself and consisting of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Secret Invasion.
While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If...? received mixed reactions, WandaVision and Loki got generally good to great reviews, as did Hawkeye and Moon Knight.
Ms. Marvel likewise received strong positive reviews, aside from resentful fans mostly motivated by racism or sexism who bashed the show (the same way angry bigoted fans harassed Brie Larson and tried to manipulate online reviews for Captain Marvel, and to this day engage in bizarre conspiracy theories pretending movies with women leads are secretly propped up by studios buying up tickets), and the same mob of boys and men perpetually upset that everything isn’t just a mirror reflecting themselves were incensed that She-Hulk dared make fun of them for being immature, bigoted, and all-around goofy.
Granted, She-Hulk did often have what looked like rushed and unfinished CGI, but it was also still miles ahead of most TV CGI and it didn’t detract from the entertainment value of the show and was generally fine. (Yes, plenty of folks just didn’t enjoy these shows, and I’m sure it’s entirely a coincidence that for many of them it always happens to be women-led shows that bother them or are declared “meh”).
Secret Wars is the most recent new MCU show (besides a new season of Loki), and it got mixed reviews that lean mostly positive but still point to trouble in the decision-making to develop the series, questions about
The point of all of this is, Marvel’s had a lot of superhero shows for a long time during the reign of the MCU, and the shows have tended to mostly get good or great reviews, while often suffering complaints of inconsistency in tie-ins vs stand-alone abilities, or iffy VFX, or questions about who is in charge and why certain decisions were made. Sound familiar? It should, because it’s a broken record of reality at this point, the sort that gets mentioned as if it’s a new development any time someone is pushing the latest version of the “sky is falling” narrative.
Not that there aren’t issues needing solutions. The budgets are too high, and Marvel — like many streamers — is discovering it’s simply not sustainable to spend $20 million or more per episode with rushed production schedules and increasingly unreasonable demands on VFX workers.
But the shows themselves are so far working and working pretty well, if you aren’t focused entirely on social media debates and media exaggerations. Most every MCU show on Disney+ has enjoyed positive reception from critics and viewers, enjoying good (and sometimes record-setting) viewership. Fixing the problems for the Marvel streaming plans is not really any more difficult than fixing the theatrical issues, because it’s easy to identify the problems, easy to see where the problems arose, and easy to see what is necessary to end those problems.
Nobody foresaw the Covid pandemic (or at least the extent of it) or the utterly shameful, failed public health response it elicited from governments and organizations that are paid and entrusted to prevent or deal with such crises. Marvel was caught off guard like every studio, Marvel suffered the same box office downturn as every studio, Marvel leaned into streaming like every studio, and Marvel is now having to make adjustments to adapt to the still-evolving environment theatrically and in streaming.
So media and fans and others in Hollywood pretending this is some shocking, Marvel-specific situation are making disingenuous claims, and they should know better. Most probably do, but the truth is more boring than doomsaying — and with everything else in the world falling apart, clickbait and hyperbole are the best way to get attention for entertainment news during a drought (caused by few new films/shows releasing, and the likelihood of strikes dragging into next year because studios put money toward bonuses, yachts, and private jets rather than pay artists, writers, and performers living wages from a fair share of the revenue they generate).
Marvel will recast Kang, they’ll reduce the number of shows and films in production at a given time, they’ll get budgets under control and allow more time for VFX work, and they’ll refocus on the approaches and measures that worked so well in the past to determine which projects to greenlight and how to return to the sense of a big shared world the Avengers have to team up to save.
Luckily, with the X-Men and Fantastic Four reboots around the corner, Marvel has a couple of big teams with lots of potential for precisely the sort of storytelling Marvel does best at the blockbuster level. They could even simply move toward a post-Secret Wars setup that lets Fantastic Four, X-Men, and a handful of other existing popular franchises carry the Marvel brand forward for a while.
We will also probably see the temporary return of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson reprise their popular MCU roles for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.
And looking at the upcoming slate, it’s not hard to see there’s plenty of reason to feel confident Marvel will continue to enjoy success, even if it’s at a slightly moderated level due to the myriad factors we’ve discussed, including the idea that superhero genre films are settling into a more consistent long-term level of popularity and performance from now on.
The next four years brings Deadpool 3, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Blade, Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars, and at some point thereafter Armor Wars and the X-Men. Of these films, the two Avengers movies are likely to be blockbuster hits, as is Deadpool 3. Captain America: Brave New World is an established franchise, lacking the original series lead but with a continuing cast and brand that I think are enough to avoid any significant downturn in box office, even if we see some drop from the peak levels of the Infinity Saga.
Blade and Thunderbolts are the riskier properties here, but the former is a previously successful cinematic brand and the latter is a team-up movie including some recognizable characters and stars. Still, this is where we might see more underperformances. Fantastic Four could likewise either perform at a blockbuster levels, or might wind up in the $700 million range, but as a key property getting lots of attention and must-work oversight, I think it’ll avoid being a problem.
Armor Wars as an extension of the Iron Man movies — and possibly/probably coming after we see Robert Downey Jr. again in some Avengers action — should perform well, and X-Men is a known successful brand getting an MCU reboot and polish as a big team franchise including younger cast members, so I think it’ll at least be capable of playing at the Guardians of the Galaxy level, if done right.
This isn’t a debacle, it’s not doomsday, and Marvel isn’t in disarray. The internal difficulties they’ve faced are frankly typical and easy to identify and solve, as much as everything else we’ve discussed here. The bottom line is this: we’ve seen Marvel Studios kick off with a big hit in Iron Man and an outright flop with The Incredible Hulk, after which Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor performed at okay levels but didn’t set the box office on fire by any stretch.
We got the original Avengers movie off the strength of Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and to really help put this into perspective I’ll point out the average per film box office of Phase One was $634 million. Phase Two’s per film average was $876 million.
Marvel worked hard to build what they created, and it’s a tremendous historic success full of ups and downs that so far have ultimately maintained an impressive level of successful across a large slate of films and series. To look at this history, this math, and think Marvel Studios is in deep trouble, struggling, or never really was very good to begin with, is unreasonable and contrary to the data and any serious considerations.

not using social media (other than here) is continuing to bang.
it turns out i love cooking. it is a fun creative break that is tactile and screen free that you get to do multiple times per day, where you learn new things and combine items in new configurations. and if you do it right you get much better food than any restaurant for far less money. i understand this is a basic concept to many. but consider that for years i have subsisted on power bars and coffee all week long because i thought having 10 unalloyed hours of computer was good. it turns out, cooking is a very grounding break from computer with many satisfying sensory elements.
im reading SO much more. just loading my phone up with ebooks and inhaling them and actively enjoying when a friend is late to show up or a bus is a ghost bus because i get to read my little stories. KM sparza’s Docile is very fanfictiony but its a mind control sci fi gay book and its fun who cares. still chipping away at wengrow and graeber’s dawn of everything. whipped through polysecure, which sucked, but it was enjoyable picking it apart.
saw Attack the Block at music box last night -- young john boyega and all the other kids in that film are so fucking adorable and talented. i have so many movies and youtube video essays to catch up on. i thought not posting would free up time for that but i need like a hands-on fidget or craft to do at home while watching things so can get thru my ever growing to watch list.
loving just having time alone with my thoughts. my imagination is expansive and i can enjoy melancholy solitude now. its like being a teenager again. i feel like my experiences and thoughts belong to myself, and are a treasure i get to enjoy now, and my attention is a gift i bestow only to certain things and people.
i do think i want to become a metafilter guy as well tho. i feel like that’s allowed

My favorite romantic relationship for Daemon was his relationship with Laena. They seemed to have built a healthy and loving relationship and family. Another thing I like was the fact that she was an adult. Both by their standards and by our standards. And how she died was really heartbreaking. That being said the show f*cked them up in every which way. And then they f*cked his relationship with his daughters that while not much is given for in the book you can still make a claim that he loved and cared for them. In conclusion this show is sh*t and if Netty (who unfortunately is Daemons only saving grace) isn’t included this season I will be finding a new fandom to either join/re-join. Maybe my childhood favorite(s) ATLA or Percy Jackson since they both are getting new shows. The Hunger Game franchise just came out with a new movie that is slowly but surely getting me back on the wagon. H*ll I might even trade out one toxic fandom for another, I just can’t decide if it’ll be Bridgerton (though they’re only toxic when it comes to certain characters), Star Wars (I haven’t been apart of this one in a while but if my memory serves me it was just shipping wars) and if I’m really feeling it I’ll go back to Harry Potter (which is low-key worse than HOTD cause the writer is problematic as well as some of the actors/actresses and the stans are crazy and the shipping wars alone can make you leave the fandom ). But yeah I have low hopes for this next season.
Dettles has a special place in my heart, and I believe Nettles was Daemon's person, I will admit that Daemon and Laena is his least problematic ship. Instead of the showrunners giving us a relatively normal healthy loving marriage they gave us dog sh*t and I will forever be pissed off about that🫠
I’m gone too if Nettles is cut.
However, honestly, after this whole situation, I refuse to get involved with another fandom again.
Granted HOTD is probably one of the worst fandoms out there(I feel like it’s worse than GOT fandom), but there are a lot more sh*tty fandoms than there are good ones and I wouldn't want to trade one sh*tty fandom for another.
Star Wars is the same fandom that bullied Jar Jar Binks actor to the point where the poor man was suicidal and they bullied the kid who played Anakin to the point where he quit acting. Not to mention how fans treated John Boyega, Kelly Marien Tran, and Moses Ingram. Those people are just as mentally deranged as HOTD stans. In fact, a lot of Dumbnyra stans ship Reylo💀That’s really the last fandom I’d join. They are one of the OG crazy fandoms.
Never got into the Hunger Games, but I know they had their issues(Rue). Percy Jackson same issue. People’s grievances with JK Rowling aside, the Harry Potter fandom has calmed down, but I imagine the crazy antics will pick up again with the new series. At their height though they were probably running neck and neck with HOTD(I wouldn’t say it’s worse).
I love Avatar. Never got into the fandom(and even if I do decide to write something for Zutara because of this new show that will be my extent of fandom interaction).
Speaking as someone who is in the Bridgerton fandom, while it has its kooky fans they are relatively harmless by fandom standards. (Though I did have some Kathony fans getting mad at me over a non-issue and saying I should stick to watching the incest show🤣 even though I've been watching Bridgerton since the beginning ).
I feel like the type of show it is makes it difficult for really crazy fandom drama to form(which seems to revolve around shipping).
Everyone has their favorite couple of course(Benophie aka the best ship, Kathony, Polin, Saphne, Francheal, Grucy, or hey ship them all), but there is no infighting like Zutara vs Katang or Dramione vs Romione.
There is one ship per guy and girl and you ship them. That’s it. It’s simple. It’s easy. Everyone loves it. Of course, you can fight with another couple, but everyone’s couple is a couple. You can’t deny it’s not canon, that it won’t happen, or that they don’t love each other(well Eloise and her man are iffy, but they are a couple).
I may be biased though considering it’s my favorite show, but even with some kooky stans it’s great.

☄ —   admin  !         + GUIDELINE ADDITIONS/UPDATES
Tumblr media
hola!  it’s admin skye back on the main, starting off with a mildly serious post. kind of?  anywho, after doing a full review of our GUIDELINES, i think it’s high time we had a little post about it — there are only a few changes to the page, we know it looks long and daunting but it really is all there to protect and support both the admin team and the muns. i also wanted to bring attention to one of our CHECKLIST items that seems to be getting overlooked:
get creative. + to begin please ensure that you post an open starter and reply to three existing opens, per muse; at least one of these two should be within 24 hours of joining. both the open starter and the three replies must be completed within 5 days of joining, and happy writing!
Tumblr media
SO!  under the cut is some rules... some new ones and some established ones we fear have gone by the wayside, and we would like everyone to read over and ensure they understand.   once you have read this post in full; leave an emoji in the replies, this will be how we tally who has read it and who hasn’t — yes, please drop an emoji as liking it will not count for this post!   and, of course, if you have any questions or concerns or need us to elaborate on something, fling us a message dears ♥️
Tumblr media
𝟏. 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒
dropping threads: you must communicate with your thread partner/s directly if you find the need to drop threads, so they are not left in the lurch. if anyone displays a pattern of consistently dropping threads we will reach out privately, similarly, we will reach out if we receive mun complaints of this becoming a pattern.
𝟐. 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐃𝐀𝐒𝐇 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐒𝐘
post cutting: please ensure to cut your posts, there should be your reply and the previous reply but no more (unless in a group thread)
muse/media posts: a maximum of five muse/musing posts allowed per day; not including the reblogging of ask memes during the weekend nor the posting of tasks. do not reblog alternate FCs or ‘original’ deity FCs unless prompted by a RP task specifically.
gif usage: we highly encourage using visual aids in replies, such as gifs, giftangles, gif or rp icons, etc. note that we do not allow 'large' gifs (banner, full post width, etc), they should be medium or small-sized. please do not use the tumblr 'find a gif' option.
𝟑. 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐌 & 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒
disallowed faceclaim resources: separate from our banned list as linked above, we are not allowing period/medieval, heavily sci-fi or heavily ‘bloody’ genre resources. we also do not allow performers, idols, singer, dancer or stage theatre FCs unless they have actual formal acting resources not just interviews.      example: you can use sophie turner but not as sansa stark, you can use john boyega, but not with a lightsaber.
muse diversity: we ask that you alternate your faceclaims or muses to help influence wider diversity, including ethnicity, age and gender binary, in this current order of preference (these will be changed to reflect imbalances):      — if your first character is a caucasian muse, then the next should be a muse of colour.      — if your first and second muses were gender binary, then your next muse should be outside of the gender binary.      — if your first or second muse is 25 then your next one should be 25+, if the first and second are both younger than 25 then the next should be 29+.
multiple muses, diversity: for those with 3-5 muses, in general we ask that at least one (or two if you have five muses) of those characters is 30+ years old, one (or two if you have five muses) are outside of the gender binary, and half of your muses should be muses of colour.
𝟓. 𝐇𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐒 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒
hiatus' cannot and will not be backdated without admin permission and is not automatically granted. your hiatus comes into play from when you ask for it and does not cover previous periods of inactivity. this rule is subject to individual circumstances.
𝟔. 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 & 𝐀𝐒𝐊 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐒
new open starters: once every two weeks we ask that you post a new open starter. you may, on occasion, reblog an old starter into the blog again providing it has less than 4 individual replies and is more than two weeks old.

A new report reveals the latest update on Kang the Conqueror's status in the MCU after Jonathan Majors' exit.
A new insider report reveals the Marvel Cinematic Universe's intention to keep Kang the Conqueror amid replacement talks, though MCU fans shouldn't expect news about who will succeed Jonathan Majors as the supervillain anytime soon.
Per Deadline's Justin Kroll (via X), Marvel Studios will not drop the Kang character from the MCU despite speculation the cinematic universe has been considering a new big bad to replace him. However, Kroll insisted Marvel will take their time with decision-making regarding the Kang recasting as they decide on serious contenders to replace Majors, who starred as the character and his variants in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki. "See a lot 'who will play Kang next' and 'here is a top contender for Kang' comments this week, and all I’ll say is this, don’t expect that news anytime soon. There will be plenty of Marvel breaks in coming weeks on various fronts but don’t hold your breath on that one," Kroll said.
Tumblr media
Kroll also addressed the possibility of Fear the Walking Dead and The Color Purple star Colman Domingo playing Kang, as well as other Hollywood names linked to the Kang role. According to the Deadline journalist, he hasn't heard any news about a potential frontrunner to play Kang in the MCU, nor is he denouncing any of the possibilities mentioned. "This isn’t dismissing any rumor this week about potential contenders for the role, I don’t have any intel on those being true or not true it’s just letting you know if I were betting what gets announced first, Kang or the field, I’d put money on the field," he said.
Colman Domingo Is a Rumored Frontrunner
After Majors was axed from Marvel following his conviction on assault and harassment charges regarding a domestic incident last March, several names were tapped to play Kang, should Marvel opt to retain the live-action version of the comic book character. Stars such as John Boyega and John David Washington have been mentioned, though the former ruled out any possibility of replacing Majors. Domingo was the latest name attached to the Kang recasting search, with some backing him as the best potential candidate, including She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Ginger Gonzaga. Domingo has since responded to the speculation, saying he's heard talk about him being named a potential replacement, though he hasn't been contacted about the opportunity.
Kang was set up to be a Thanos-level baddie in the MCU, with the next two Avengers films set to prominently feature the character against the titular supergroup. Majors' performance as Kang, as well as variants Victor Timely and He Who Remains, were widely praised. However, Majors' conviction caused the next Avengers film to lose its original title, The Kang Dynasty, with rumors Doctor Doom could be set to replace Kang as the MCU's top villain.
Majors has since spoken out about his Marvel firing and conviction, revealing his sadness about being axed from the MCU while maintaining his innocence regarding the alleged incident with ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Majors is due to return to court on Feb. 6, facing a year in prison following his conviction.
Along with his Marvel firing, Majors has seen his Disney/Searchlight Pictures film, Magazine Dreams, lose its planned premiere, with reports the biographical drama may never be released. He also lost a role which would have seen him play NBA legend, Dennis Rodman, in the upcoming biopic, 48 Hours in Vegas.

Per the studio, the project is inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi (Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
Boyega will play Dahomey’s ruler, King Ghezo.
“I have been enamored by John’s immense talent for years, but his speech to Black women during the protests cemented my desire to work with him,” said Prince-Bythewood in a statement. “The description of King Ghezo reads, ‘He walks as if the earth were honored by its burden.’ John possesses that innate depth and swagger, and I’m so excited to put it on screen.”

I've been tagged by @elorianna to do the writing tag game! Thank you very much 💖💖 For those of you who don't know, I actually write Fanfic!
How many works do you have on Ao3?
I've written a mere 6 fics 😳 I still have to grow my collection! I also write for a couple of fandoms aside from Milex - Finn and Poe from Star Wars, and I have one Gorillaz 2Doc fanfic.
What’s your total Ao3 word count?
10,634 - not many at all! I mostly post oneshots. Maybe one day I'll post a work that's that amount alone. The only public document I've written that was that long was my dissertation😂
What’re your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. All We Are
2. Into Place
3. Why Not?
4. Of the Morning
5. The Element of Surprise
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I don't get many comments so I try to reply to them all as they mean a lot to me! Thank you commenters! 🥰
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Oh definitely 'All We Are' - it's my only Gorillaz fanfic so far and I think the nature of Gorillaz as a franchise demands that it has darker undertones, especially the themes of the history of how Murdoc has treated 2D in the past. Spoiler alert but I kind of like that Murdoc doesn't pursue his feelings and cuts it off - it feels very in character.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Literally all of my others tend to have happier conclusions - I just like to see my ships get together haha! I would say 'The Element of Surprise' has the happiest ending - I just wanted Al to have his death ramps ring back so it was purely self-indulgent😂
Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?
None yet! I did have an idea to pair Finn and Poe with Inside Llewyn Davis, although it's probably more of an AU than a crossover - perhaps Poe (in the starving artist role of Llewyn) meets Finn at one of the Gorfiend's dinner parties and it continues from there? Who knows bro🤷🏻‍♀️
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not really, everyone's been very kind!
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do write smut but I've only ever published one piece, 'Not Safe For Comms' - it took a lot of courage to post that one because even though writing's writing at the end of the day, smut does have a reputation per-se and, lets be honest, no one wants to read bad smut, so I had to make sure it was just right - it takes a lot to really build it up and make a reader feel excited about it and believe it. Maybe more is to come (har har) if I get any more ideas 👀
Tbh I just prefer to read it (who said that?)
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so?
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not to my knowledge!
What’s your all time favourite ship?
That is a huge question!
I LOVE Milex but I'm currently only really reading it and not writing it - no particular reason aside from a general lack of content and inspiration atm but this could change with Miles' new album and potential AM7? 👀
Can't lie, I'm really digging FinnPoe/Stormpilot the most atm. I have so many thoughts and feelings about them but I'm just upset that disney didn't go for it and put them together - it's literally tangible: their whirlwind meeting where they saved each others' lives and Poe gave Finn his NAME, the lip bite™ at the end of Force Awakens, the dynamic of the dashing flyboy pilot falling HARD for a rebel stormtrooper he just met, the way they bicker like a married couple, god I love it. It's also no secret that I'm currently on an Oscar Isaac hype and the fact that both he AND John Boyega were actively rooting for them to get together (even saying they played the roles romantic) just makes me love them even more. We were ROBBED!
I also ship the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler(my TRUE otp since 2006) Cassian and Jyn from Rogue One(why they gotta die like that) and The Eleventh Doctor and Clara (they're just cute alright!) as well as many more!
What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I also tend to also scrap things that just aren't working. I had a Milex one where the lads played a flirty game of pool set in 2005 but I was wrestling with it for so long that I just let it go. I also wrote around 10k of a fic where Alex was undercover and Miles was a crime boss😂 but I felt icky about it cause even though I made Alex an independent detective in a noir style it still felt a bit copaganda-esque and I didn't like that. The only WIP I currently have is a very basic FinnPoe one(inspired by Oscar dancing in Ex Machina cause I am what? Basic x) but I think I only like it for how I've written the ending so I need to find a way to get that to work 'cause I really like it!
What are your writing strengths?
I'm not the best out there - I mostly write for myself haha but I think I'm pretty good at description and scene setting, as well as some exposition.
What are your writing weaknesses?
A lot of things tbh, even though I did creative writing at A Level 🙃 I struggle with plot a lot(hence the oneshots), and sometimes dialogue stumps me. It's all a learning process!
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I've never had a reason to, but I'd have to get it translated accurately if I did. I think it's also important not to alienate a reader as sometimes I read stuff and it's a bit jarring if you're not sure on the meaning.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Milex is my first published fic, but I think I wrote for maybe Doctor Who back in the day? I've been reading fanfic for years, though.
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
I have so few that I like them all! I do like my Gorillaz one which is surprising as that one took me the least time to write and I didn't even expect to write it at all - it's somehow my most popular fic(maybe the gorillaz fandom is just super active?) and I think the more angsty ending gave me a lot more to play with.
