I had to do a big clean out of Penny's cage (what is it with female syrian hams and their penchant for peeing all the way down in their burrows 😭) so I took the opportunity to freshen things up. I also added a dig box in that back corner and filled it with cork granules. So far she really loves digging in it, so mission accomplished.
Just finished another aquascaping project- an actual Nature Aquarium: a diverging path in a forest.
So there are a few reasons why I generally don't do this kind of aquascaping, the main one being my aquariums are animal enclosures, not dioramas.
Bare bones hardscaping.
Laid the path down. The path splits because I originally planned for it to be viewable from both the front and side.
I just fed him. He's being dramatic. This isn't even going to be his tank.
Planted, filled, hardware set.
I hate this part. The only thing worse than gluing a shit-ton of moss onto driftwood is tying it on to individual branches by hand.
Driftwood, placed! Almost there! I added floaters and let the tank cycle for a couple weeks, then ran into something unexpected.
A combination of the driftwood tannins and a bacterial bloom from the Bio-Stratum turned the scape into a cloudy blackwater tank. I unintentionally made a goth aquarium.
It'll resolve itself eventually, but in the meantime, it's very suitable for the main resident: my dumbo betta Lavender.
Outdoor cats kill over 2 BILLION birds every year! Here's some illustrations I did for National Audubon Society of a few catios on the market. A great way to keep cats happy, and birds alive!
my favorite brand of dazai is pathetic. i hate it when ppl - including canon itself - try to make him cool. the man clearly strives to be pathetic why are you forcing him to be something he isn't. this is inhumane treatment. put him in a wet cardboard box NOW.
Hi! I just wanted to say thank you; your compassion and understanding for people who have made husbandry mistakes but are trying to correct them is incredible and helped me a lot. I definitely made some mistakes with my rosy boa but she’s in a much better enclosure now! (And had an A+ health checkup from the vet).
Here’s the new enclosure! It’s from Animal Plastics and it’s 6x3x2 (huge upgrade from her 3x1x1 before!)
Honestly, one of the highlights of my day is checking in on her and seeing her use every inch of that space. High end gets to 86-90 directly under the CHE, low end is around 72. If you have any suggestions for improving it, I’d love to hear them!
And here’s some pictures of the lady herself.
(Nobody told her she’s a desert species)
Thanks again for everything you do! As an aspiring nature educator, your work with this blog is awesome.

Looks awesome! I love how many varied spaces and enrichment items you’ve worked in. She’s such a cutie. :)
I'm quite pleased with the way it looks and Aye-Aye seems extremely happy living in it too. So far, his favorite things are digging in the sand box, standing on the rocks I piled on the platform in the back corner so he can be tall, and doing rabbit-esque binkies in the wood chip box (which is also his toilet, so maybe it's more like cat-esque post-shit zoomies).
(Wow, that sentence would be absolutely incomprehensible to people whose pets aren't their entire lives)
sometimes i claw at the walls of my mind and wail because i Cannot Get Into Pokemon. i want to. i've always wanted to. it seems right up my alley. monster battles and cool creature design and animal teams and and and - But For Some Reason I Cannot.
I think she's getting ready to molt again, she's made her hammock much bigger than before and has sealed herself in as of 2 days ago. If she's successful, it will be one of her last molts, as once they are adults, they don't molt anymore.
