Met a special little man today. An absolutely breathtaking three-toed box turtle who impressed me VERY much. He was so beautiful and so healthy. Very alert and squirmy. He did NOT belong in the road. I don't think he had been there long. People were being careful not to hit him, but nobody had stopped yet, so I circled back and let him hitch a ride a couple of blocks.
I couldn't tell which way he was crossing, he was just facing down the road, so I decided to bring him to the woods by my house. They're omnivorous and there's loads of insects, fish, snails, and plants there for him to forage. It's a lovely spot with few things that will bother him.
This species lives 50 up to 100 years and judging from his peak condition with zero marks on him anywhere, I want to say he was not quite fully mature. There's every chance I may see him again, or, even better, that he might outlive me. Wouldn't that be something else? That one tiny good deed could create a future longer than my own. I hope he survives to make babies. What a beautiful animal!

This turtle friend let me get a peek at his beautiful orange arm spots! His shell shows lots of signs of wear and healed wounds, so I figure he's an older guy. Maybe a three toed box turtle? I'll have to check the back feet if I meet him again. He was put back right where I found him.

They look like box turtles. Because of the head and shell shape. My immediate thought was they'd be a three-toed box turtle since they're plain colored with no spots or patterns anywhere, BUT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They obviously have more than three toes. And the plastron looks nothing like any kind of box turtle's.

Do you have any cool facts about Missouri wildlife?
I'd love to share something with my Midwestern friends, and thank you for always updating this blog!
I don't know if i have any Missouri animal facts per se... but I can share some of the state symbols with everyone.
We moved around a lot when we first came to the U.S. and we lived briefly in Kansas City. I have great memories of going to the Ozarks at Christmas time (near Lake of the Ozarks). I specifically remember following woodpeckers and deer around the forest in the snow.
SOME MISSOURI STATE SYMBOLS:
Tumblr media
STATE BIRD: Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), family Turdidae, order Passeriformes, found across much of the central and Eastern U.S., SE Canada, and NW Mexico
Changes in land use lead to drastic declines in Eastern Bluebirds after the early 1900s. They have recovered in many places, due to "bluebird trails", reestablishing appropriate habitat and nest box campaigns for public and private property.
Find out more: NestWatch | Eastern Bluebird - NestWatch
Blue birds are in the thrush family, Turdidae, along with American Robins.
They eat mainly worms, insects, and other small invertebrates (but also take berries for part of the year).
Bluebirds are cavity nesters, nesting in tree holes usually, but will readily take to properly constructed and placed nest boxes.
Males (pictured) are brighter blue, and females are a more muted and faded blue or bluish gray.

STATE AQUATIC ANIMAL: American Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula), family Polyodontidae, order Acipenseriformes, found in various parts of the Mississippi River basin
This species is the only member of this family that still exists. They are most closely related to sturgeons. This order, Acipenseriformes, is considered one of the most evolutionarily primitive groups of ray finned fishes.
They do not have scales, and their skeleton is mostly cartilaginous.
They are filter feeders. Their heads and rostrums are covered with thousands of sensory receptors, which help them locate zooplankton swarms.
They are considered "vulnerable" due to overfishing, habitat degradation and destruction, and pollution.

Tumblr media
STATE ENDANGERED ANIMAL: Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), family Cryptobranchidae, eastern United States
The largest salamander in the Americas, it grows to a total maximum length of up to 40 cm (15.7 in).
Though nationally it is considered to be just "vulnerable", in some states (like Missouri), it is "endangered".

STATE REPTILE: Three-toed Box Turtle (Terrapene triunguis), family Emydidae, found in the South-central and Southeastern U.S.
This specie shas been considered to be a subspecies of the Eastern Box Turtle, T. carolina (and still is by some herpetologists).
These turtles are terrestrial, but are not closely related to tortoises. They are in the same family as aquatic sliders, pond turtles, cooters, map turtles, and painted turtles.

Tumblr media
STATE FISH: Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), family Ictaluridae, order Siluriformes, found in freshwater habitats in the eastern and southern US, southern Canada, and northern Mexico
They are widely caught, and have been introduced into waterways in other parts of North America and around the world. (In some places they are considered an invasive species).

I was out for a walk in my parents' neighborhood the other day when I happened across this lovely three-toed box turtle (Terrapene triunguis). Box turtles are one of the things I've missed since moving to the PNW almost two decades ago, so it was lovely to get to see one of my favorite reptiles in the flesh after so long. This one looks like they've been in some scrapes over the years given the condition of the shell, but they looked to be in good health otherwise. Good luck, little buddy!

The Rise TMNT movie heights are
Raph- 6’ ?” -Alligator Snapping turtle
Leo- 5’ 5” -Red Eared Slider
Donnie - 5’ 3” (but 5’ 5” seems more accurate) - Spiny Softshell
Mikey - 4’ 7” - Ornate Box turtle
April -4’ 8”
Splinter- 3’
Draxum- 6’ 8”
Now, I’m not sure how tall Casey Jr is, he’s roughly Leo’s height, maybe a tad inches taller. But Future Leo was roughly a third taller than him. Leading to F!Leo possibly being around 7 feet tall. By this logic. F! Would be about the same height. F! Mikey would be 6 feet. And Future Raph would be around 8 feet. But Raph’s also an alligator snapping turtle and they grow SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the other turtle species. Like average ninpo form of a scale difference. So that’s an easy 14 feet tall, but 20 to 25 or more would still be valid heights. But I think 50 feet before ninpo would be the max possibility. But if you’re writing that you might want to give him shrinking powers…
Anyway. Other tmnt heights/species I could gather include (might not be 100% accurate.):
1987 - are all 5’ 1” , I also heard 4’ 11”
Species: "testudinidae carolina", which is not a real species. Testudinidae is a tortoise family. Might be terrapene carolina, aka common box turtles.
2003 - all of the turtles are initially 5’ 2” before growing to 5’ 5”
Commonly fan accepted to be red eared slides.
In the Fast Forward arc I heard they’re this height.
Raph - 5’ 7”
Leo- 5’ 5”
Donnie- 5’ 6”
Mikey- 5’ 4”
2012 - diamond back terrapins/ common (Coahuilian? Three toed?) box turtles
Raph- 5’ 0”
Leo- 5’ 1”
Donnie- 5’ 6”
Mikey- 4’ 10”?
April- 5’ 1”
Thank you

More 2012 turtles redesigned into the ROTTMNT style! I tweaked it a bit, made them more colorful and tried to give them a bit of their own styles, without deviating TOO far from 2012. According to google, the 2012 boys are three-toed box turtles, so the different colorations are based on random pictures of three-toed box turtles I found online. I am not a biologist.
But I like them!!! :) This is probably the most cartoony I've ever tried to draw, and it was very fun! the Rise style is literally SO beautiful I could stare at it forever, so getting to draw it a bit made me happy.
Also short Raph supremacy <3 Closeups under the cut!

what do you think of conservation detection dogs?
love them! worked with them. finch is trained on three toed box turtle and ornate box turtle, nettle is started three toes too. this was for a project that i got a grant for but ended up not being able to complete due to COVID.
CD are very, very useful especially for my field specifically...most animals that we work this are very cryptic and hard to find - with box turtles, three-toes are usually woodland species so you can find them in some capacity by doing traverse walking surveys, but ornates (species of concern) are native to areas like this:
Tumblr media
which is uhhhh.... not as easy to do walking surveys (they hurt).
with reptiles & amphibs, most of them have very good camouflage to avoid visual detection. humans are primarily visual! dogs are primarily olfactory, can smell multiple feet underground, and can usually lead us to places where our animals of interest live or frequent which is also very useful!

Reference for my “villain” Donatello!! Plus extra doodle for fun. The pink thing on the back of his neck and shoulders is a Kraang biomass, also yes his bo staff is now a scythe. I headcanon the 2012 bois as being three toed box turtles, it just clicks for me. Also like it is stated on the image this is the overly detailed version of the design, and I will be simplifying it for the comic drawing to make it easier. DKT gets his name from his goofed up looking teeth btw ;). Have a great day / night!
