A friend and mentor once told me to “never stop working the songs.” I might have taken his advice a bit too far. But, I am glad that I did.

The song, “New,” appears on my last two records. On the Moment of Truth CD, “New” is a raw fingerpicked acoustic guitar/harmonica song. On the Before I Let Go CD, “New” is full blown electric - drums, keys, lots of guitars…, kitchen sink…, and a generous amount of “studio magic.” But, the song is the same at its core - a simple expression of frustration of the passing time combined with the resignation that we will never be young again.

A couple of funny things about “New” -

It was the last song mixed for the Before I Let Go CD. Well, that’s not entirely true. My circa 2003 computer crashed (forever) during the final mix of “New” - an embarrassing situation for an IT guy. More importantly, I was forced to use an old mix which does not contain all of the “studio magic” or the lessons learned from mixing the other songs.

I never developed a method for writing songs. But, it seems like I usually start songs on piano or acoustic guitar. However the electric version of “New” came first. The song was born on an unplugged electric guitar using the pulsing high notes that run through the intro and verses. (B and E Strings for the guitar players). When I moved to acoustic only performances, I was quite frustrated by my failed attempts at playing the parts on an acoustic guitar. It took me two attempts - yes two studio sessions to play it “correctly” on acoustic for the Moment of Truth CD.

It seems appropriate to share “New” just shortly after my birthday and as we approach a new year. Despite putting-up some big numbers in the age department, I still believe that our best days are ahead of us. It is unlikely that I will ever believe in that there is a deadline or expiration date on achievement. So, I will keep working hard and trying different things although I am clearly “too many years away from being New.”

Alright to Love (Christmas Again)

Recording holiday music is sort of funny. I finished writing and recording Alright to Love(Christmas Again) in the Summer of 2012. It was hardly Christmas weather. When I recorded the song, it was about 90 degrees in Philly which is like 110 here in North Texas. Kim and I listened to the mixes that Rich King sent over in a hot car in the parking lot outside of the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach.

Most of you know that Alright to Love is “based on a true story.” I will avoid repeating the detail again. But, we still have the ornament from Longwood Gardens on our tree. And, Kim still has the Rockettes’ outfit. Just a few weeks ago, Kim wore the outfit for a horseback riding competition.

For a number of reasons, I did not book any Christmas shows this year. So, the only time I will perform Alright to Love is at one of the open mics where I am lucky to perform.

I hope you enjoy Alright to Love (Christmas Again). A friend once said that it was my best song. I don’t know about that. But, I love the song and the beautiful memories that it captures.

I hope that you and your family have a beautiful holiday season.
