Recently have been on a binge of the Mayday: Air Crash Investigations/Air Disasters TV series. One episode stood out to me.
Mistaken Identity. The disaster of Iran Air Flight 655. An Iranian passenger plane that was mistakenly identified as a fighter jet by the US navy and shot down on 3 July 1988. Of course, there's far more to it than that.
The US navy vessel sent a helicopter to scout a vessel it had identified on radar. The vessel fired shots at their helicopter, so the helicopter retreated, and the navy vessel was deployed to respond with force. Had the US never initiated contact, the battle that would lead to a captain calling for the shootdown of the plane never would have occurred.
Iran Air Flight 655 was an Airbus A300 passenger jet with 290 people aboard.
I can't find their names anywhere.
The captain that called for the shootdown of the jet was later awarded. President Reagan expressed "regrets" for the "tragedy," but a formal apology was never issued.
Don't take my words out of context - 9/11 was absolutely a tragedy. But part of me has to wonder - why do we, as Americans, act as if the rest of the world must grieve with us, groveling at our damn feet, meanwhile we've done heinous acts like this, and expect them to be swiftly forgotten, swept under the rug, with a "I swear it was an accident, I swear, guys"?
I'm angry I was never told about Iran Air 655. I was a baby when 9/11 happened. I don't remember it at all. Yet I know about it. But when our military does something heinous, nobody speaks a word of it, or they dress it in such pretty words, you don't even realize how sickeningly awful it was.
I'm angry that many of my fellow Americans think people in other countries hate us because they're "bad people." They are people, like you and me, and they have every reason to despise us.
I am sorry, Iran Air 655.
I am sorry nobody ever said sorry. Regrets and money are not apologies. You deserved humanity, not "shut up" compensation.
I hope at least some remember now.

Okay, but I've been thinking about this post and all the ways the lightning is for Eddie what the wells was for Buck but right now is downing on me just how similar the circumstances are. It's just a regular old day on the job. Both Eddie and Buck volunteered in to the rescue. Buck has Eddie's line on the well and Eddie has Buck's during that fire. The literal rain at night aspect of it all. The danger being triggered by lightning. The team as audience. The lack of care about their own well-being while trying to reach the other. The way they are both screaming the other's name as they do something that's totally not the logical thing to do at that moment, since there's no way Buck can dig enough to get to Eddie by hand and there's no way Eddie can defy gravity and pull Buck up to him. The helplessness of the way that both of them have to let someone else do something, with Eddie having to lower Buck to Bobby and Buck accepting he needs to wait and use the help of the rest of the LAFD to find Eddie. There's also things like Eddie being the first thing Buck remembers in the coma dream and Buck being in the first memory in Eddie's I need to keep fighting montage. There's also this. The helpless look while Bobby screams out instructions.

And we know the well is pivotal for Eddie in the whole buddie of things since the well triggers the will so Eddie figured something out down there and Buck has to learn something with the lightning as well, so patterns? Maybe?

Palomares, Spain. In 1966 two American military airplanes collided in flight and 4 thermonuclear bombs fell to the ground. Two of them released 20kg Plutonium. Today, 57 years later, the US government has promised to remove the contaminated soil and carry it to America.

I always wanted to die clean and pretty, but I'd be too busy on working days.
So I am relieved that the turbulence wasn't forecasted-
I couldn't have changed anyway.

I was framed for crashing a plane and my punishment for allegedly doing it and coming out unscathed from the accident was having to go to a Jonas Brothers concert and I cried.

F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY #6
On F-14 As and Bs, they would limit the jet to 4Gs maximum for three months and then they would install a metal staple to the bottom of the aircraft just forward of the tail hook. The point of the staple was to prevent severe bulkhead cracks and fuselage delamination by reducing the torquing moments caused by material fatigue.
The staple is described as being a 1 foot-long and 1 inch wide solid steel part that looks exactly like a staple. As a part of their pre-flight checks, pilots would have to hang on it to ensure it wouldn’t fall out.
