Oleander is the introduction to Jennifer Allis Provost's Poison Garden series, and it's my introduction to the author. Just an FYI: I don't plan on this being the last time I enjoy either one. This book is so much fun. It's a fast-paced, easy read with an entertaining storyline and engaging characters. There is a mystery to solve, a murder mystery, and our heroine, Eli, has a few helpers along the way. One of those is a possible love interest, Dan, who happens to be a police detective. Then there are the magical friends of Eli and their quirks and colorful personalities. The mystery is a bit predictable, but it was more about the characters, the relationships, and the magic for me. I really liked the banter between Eli and Dan, and I look forward to more of them in the next book in the series - especially since there's an open-ended conclusion in this one. I wouldn't call it a cliffy, but there are questions. The story is easily read in an afternoon, which made for a perfect weekend read, curled up on the couch with my ever-present cup of coffee.

My offering on this day of Venus is a view into my drawing process from start to finish. 🐺 Aconite, commonly known as Monkshood, is renown for being one of the most poisonous plants on earth. The Greek term ‘lycoctonum’ was used to refer to perennials of the genus Aconitum. The term translates to ‘Wolf’s bane’ and comes from the many canine-centered myths and legends that shroud this plant in mystery. Some say it was spawned from the spit of Cereberus, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld. Other tales tell that the plant’s poison was used on arrowheads when hunting wolves. Still, other stories tell of Wolfsbane’s aid as an antidote to those who have become werewolves! Apart from its association with the canine realm, Monkshood also has strong ties to Venus and water. TIL- there is a patron saint of witches, warlocks, magicians, mages, hags, crone, etc.

Her name is St. Columba (sometimes of Sens sometimes of Spain), and in my favorite story, Emperor Aurelian locked her in the amphitheatre brothel for refusing to marry his kid, and when someone tried to violate her, a she bear attacked and killed them. Then they tried to burn the two of them (Columba and the bear), but the best escaped and it started raining, spiking their barbeque plans. So they chopped off her head.

There is a patron saint of EVERYTHING.
