Dallas Wade – A channel with mostly video essays and reaction videos regarding Christianity.

Friendly Atheist - The YouTube channel of Hemant Mehta, a former member of the board of directors for Foundation Beyond Belief. He mostly discusses news and has a playlist where he discusses “Everything Wrong In Genesis in the Bible”. He also runs a website, friendlyatheist.com in case you prefer reading to viewing or listening.
Genetically Modified Skeptic - An atheist look at various issues relating to religion.
Godless Bitches - The Godless Bitches is a podcast focusing on atheist issues from a feminist perspective featuring Vi La Bianca, Jenna Belk, Jen Aldrich, & guests. The show streams every 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month at 6pm directly after The Atheist Experience.

Gutsick Gibbon – She’s a PhD student in Biological Anthropology, so her main area of interest is human evolution and debunking creationist misinformation. According to her, in her channel you can find content  “concerning primates, general zoology, paleontology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology.”
Holy Koolaid - A channel by Thomas Westbrook (a former Jehovah’s Witness) that features news, discussions about the Bible, discussions about the historicity of events in the Bible, and more. He has a playlist for “Nothing Fails Like Bible History” and also often looks at religious cults.
JaclynGlenn -  An atheist who talks about a variety of topics.
JeGaysus – I’m not really sure if he’s atheist (sometimes I think he might be, other times I’m not sure), but his gay Jesus persona is too funny not to share.
Jimmy Snow - A show with a mix of subject material, typically dealing with atheism and LGBT+-related stuff.
John Cedars - A range of videos aimed at dissecting the various teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses, as well as new developments in the religion. In particular, he tries to keep on top of the latest propaganda released by Watchtower by way of video rebuttals as much as possible.

Prophet of Zod - Everything from satirical atheist cartoons to a guy with a static head and no discernible facial features talking about atheism-related stuff. His most popular section is a series on “Dumb Things People Say to Atheists”, where he very calmly and respectfully explains why what the thing is dumb and how best to respond.

Shannon Q - An atheist who talks about a variety of topics.
Sir Sic – A reaction video channel where the host is a cartoon knight.
Skeptics & Scoundrels – A very new channel by an atheist ex-JW. I personally like him already. Before talking about why he disagrees with the paster he’s responding to, he makes a point of finding something nice to say about the person (“Your beard is cool – baby birds could nest in that thing!”), which I think it’s a neat and unique approach. He doesn’t have a lot of videos yet but give it time. :)
The SkepTick – A pretty fun channel of mostly reaction vids reacting to religious videos.

Who's thara and Chris? And why have I not heard of them before? (I haven't followed the main DC comic books for years... I'm so lost).
Alrighty so!
Chris Kent is the adopted son of Clark and Lois Kent. His biological parents are, I kid you not, General Zod and his wife, Ursa. He was born in the Phantom Zone (he actually becomes Nightwing, definitely suggest looking him up!) I’d like to think he and Kon show up around the same time, turning Jon into the youngest of three boys (Chris is the oldest, Kon the middle).
Thara Ak-Var is actually Kara’s best friend from Krypton! After her parents were killed and she he had these prophetic dreams of a boy concieved and born in the phantom zone. Basically a lot of things happen, but she’s a soldier in New Krypton. She also becomes the avatar for Flamebird, the Kryptonian Goddess of Destruction.
Chris just joins his brothers in the “My type is dark-haired beauty who gives orders and kicks ass.” Just like their father 😂
I’m pretty sure they dated in the comics, I just decided to keep them together. I mean, girl was dreaming about him!!
In addition, because I thought it would be funny to see, they adopted three kids (two half-Brainiacs, one meta) and had three of their own. Just to, like, put it in perspective for the biological kids: Thara and Chris are both full Kryptonians.
Basically, in my mind? Clark and Lois end up with:
three full Kryptonian grandkids
two half Brainiacs grandsons
one Tamaranean/Kryptonian/Human granddaughter(the only one without any powers, but jumps off buildings for fun)
one Kryptonian/human/Amazonian granddaughter (Tim and Kon’s daughter, Grace)
four meta grandchildren.

"The Register." From Surah 6, Al An'am, the Cattle.
Tumblr media
The Prophet says we cannot invent God or His angels or anything like resurrection or salvation, these are tall tales unless they can be witnessed, the like the wind between the branches makes the leaves on it rustle.
He goes on in this next section to say that while the المكسرات خدر contemplate and pissate over their silly strange troublemaking tactics, real religious people will register the sigs of the real God named in the Verses of the Quran. There are Four Directions one must turn in order to complete the revelation of the signs named in the Register:
6:36-39
Only those who hear will respond. But the dead - Allah will resurrect them; then to Him they will be returned.
And they say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Indeed, Allah is Able to send down a sign, but most of them do not know."
And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
But those who deny Our verses are deaf and dumb within darknesses. Whomever Allah wills - He leaves astray; and whomever He wills - He puts him on a straight path.
Commentary:
Because we are dealing with the Four Directions, the Values in Gematria must be used to understand the real hidden meaning:
a. All human being start life as dead things until religion brings them to life. The Value in Gematria is 7640, ז‎ו‎ד אֶפֶס‎, zod is zero, "The kit is zero."
b. Why has a sign not been sent? The Value in Gematria is 8878, חחזח‎‎, hazzah, "a shifting."
Shift in the Quran is normally called iltifat by Arab scholars. This literally means “to turn/turn one's face to” (Abdel Haleem, 1992, p. 409).
c. Communities like you. The Value in Gematria is 11579, יאהזט‎, yahzat, "it will be."
The Quran teaches Allah's creative power stems from the Arabic verb, "To be" which is explained in the following verses. This includes the expectation we will become intelligent and understand everything about the creation that exists below us in the evolutionary ladder and also above us, beyond the worlds:
"Be, and it is" (كُن فَيَكُونُ kun fa-yakūnu) is a phrase referring to creation by Allah. In Arabic the imperative verb "be" (kun) is spelled with the letters kāf and nūn.[1] Kun fa-yakūnu has its reference in the Quran cited as a symbol or sign of God's supreme creative power. There are eight Quranic references to kun fa-yakūnu:
2:117– He is the One Who has originated the heavens and the earth, and when He wills to (originate) a thing, He only says to it: 'Be', and it becomes.
3:47– Mary submitted: 'O my Lord, how shall I have a son when no man has ever touched me?' He said: 'Just as Allah creates what He pleases.' When He decides (to do) some work, He just gives it the command 'Be', and it becomes.
3:59– Surely, the example of ‘Isa (Jesus) in the sight of Allah is the same as that of Adam whom He formed from clay, then said (to him): 'Be'. And he became.
6:73– And He is the One (Allah) Who has created the heavens and the earth (in accordance with His decreed celestial order based) on truth. And the Day when He will say: 'Be', then that (Day of Judgment) will come into being. His Word is the truth. And His will be the sovereignty on the Day when the Trumpet will be blown (by Israfil). He (is the One Who) has the knowledge of the unseen and the seen, and He is All-Wise, All-Aware.
16:40– Our command for a thing is but only this much that when We intend (to bring) it (into existence), We say to it: 'Be', and it becomes.
19:35– It is not Allah's Glory that He should take (to Himself anyone as) a son. Holy and Glorified is He (above this)! When He decrees any matter, He only says to it: 'Be', and it becomes.
36:77-83– Do people not see that We have created them from a sperm-drop, then—behold!—they openly challenge ˹Us˺? And they argue with Us—forgetting they were created—saying, “Who will give life to decayed bones?” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “They will be revived by the One Who produced them the first time, for He has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of every created being. ˹He is the One˺ Who gives you fire from green trees, and—behold!—you kindle ˹fire˺ from them. Can the One Who created the heavens and the earth not ˹easily˺ resurrect these ˹deniers˺?” Yes ˹He can˺! For He is the Master Creator, All-Knowing. All it takes, when He wills something ˹to be˺, is simply to say to it: “Be!” And it is! So glory be to the One in Whose Hands is the authority over all things, and to Whom ˹alone˺ you will ˹all˺ be returned.
40:68– He is the One Who gives life and causes death. Then when He decides upon a thing, He says to it only: 'Be', so it becomes.
d. But those who deny...The Value in Gematria is 13539, אגה‎גט‎, aggat, the "agriculture needed for the winepress."
The only mention of the winepress in the Quran is fouind in 12:36:
"And two other servants went to jail with Joseph. One of them said, “I dreamt I was pressing wine.” The other said, “I dreamt I was carrying ˹some˺ bread on my head, from which birds were eating.” ˹Then both said,˺ “Tell us their interpretation, for we surely see you as one of the good-doers.”
There is a strict ban on intoxicants named in the Quran until one achieves sama' or "the sky" AKA what is between the heavens and the earth, meaning one is able to discern:
"As regards what is meant by what is between the heavens and the earth, it is this vast universe which is between both of them. And what is between them are the different kinds of creatures such as the jinn, humans, birds and other creatures.
However, we have not come across any special statement of the scholars about the relationship between these terms and what you called our present scientific understanding of the universe.
Finally, it should be noted that the Quran is a book of guidance which leads the people to the worship of Allaah, and it is not a book of scientific theories, as the Quran was not revealed for this purpose. Rather, it is a methodology to adjust life and society according to the relationship between the people and their Lord The Almighty, and according to the conduct that their Lord is pleased with.
Nevertheless, the Quran refers sometimes to some universal facts to prove the existence of the One true God, Who is able to do everything."
One one achieves a certain level of intimacy with the truth and heightened discretion, then the Quran says wine like the truth itself does no harm:
From 56: 18-19:
"...with cups, pitchers, and a drink ˹of pure wine˺ from a flowing stream, that will cause them neither headache nor intoxication."
As for the question of whether or not a Muslim should drink, the Quran says one must not slur one's words or be late for work or be unslovenly in public. These things are of the greatest importance to God. There are certainly greater sins taking place in the world, and less extreme views towards them.
As the above states, the "the kit" the human being is incapable of making the right decisions without proper role models. These are the ones of which the Reigstry will make an account and also their followers.

A thumbnail that I made for my previous YouTube video. I made this with free software: Adobe Express online, Inkscape, Microsoft Paint 3D and Microsoft Paint. Who needs Canva Premium, when you know Inkscape and a little bit of SVG scripting.
The main image of a child burning in Hell, I lifted from a video by Prophet of Zod called 'The Man who went to Heaven', a video that is well worth seeing.

The ex-Christian and atheist YouTube channels I follow
Jimmy Snow https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgeV3tFiU2Xg0PD1dAQbBHA Jimmy is ex-Mormon. He’s a queer, fun and most importantly, a deep thinker. He helped me see Christianity’s morals with new eyes and build my own morals. If you’re feeling numb, watch Jimmy, he always feels many feelings. He’s also living with chronic illness.
The Line https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIv3LvN_0CNzMpSrTF9naNA Jimmy’s collaboration with Matt Dillahunty: a call-in show with both theist and non-theist callers.
Matt Dillahunty https://www.youtube.com/user/SansDeity Ex Baptist I think? A very sharp mind, his debates and other videos are precious. A modern philosopher in the best possible sense. This speech helped me see how immoral and petty our awesome god really is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GYI0WZCquc
AroRa https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAJfDidJyukTekgSRZrjadw Aron went from Mormonism to New Age and in the end found the truth in skepticism and science. He takes no shit. He’s a science educator striving to push creationism out of the schools of the south.
Seth Andrews (The Thinking Atheist) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeYP27qLtfUMY1b1Cyy3WdQ Seth is a former evangelical radio host. Now he makes a weekly podcast, videos and interviews, and speaks at atheist events.
Noah Lugeons from God Awful Movies and the Scathing Atheist podcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuur9RRqiAGO7r-caFonE0w Noah, Heath and Eli are the funniest people. They made me laugh to tears when I was confused and afraid at the beginning of my deconversion. God Awful Movies is a detailed and amusing review of Christian movies. The Scathing Atheist is a comedy show with an extra angry Diatribe segment from Noah and a lovely segment by his wife called This Week in Misogyny.
Viced Rhino https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzNGEDuZOa-hA3abbWtTkUA He reviews Christian apologetic and creationist videos. Come and fall in love with science.
Owen (Telltale) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo6JSNp6SuUKf-yiaBQReNA Former Jehovah Witness. Responds to people’s voice mails about religious and cult issues. He taught me about Dr Steven Hassan’s BITE model that defines a cult. Owen reads a lot about propaganda, brainwashing and street epistemology. I’ll never forget his adventure at the JW headquarters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3305c_CF6IM
Drew (Genetically Modified Skeptic) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG1uayRlzz3ahT8ISRdyw7Q Former evangelical Christian. His style is gentle, his skepticism is commendable. Kent Hovind hates him.
Milwakee Atheists https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcygdrZy-YxcOiLM-delp3A If you feel like listening to atheists reading the Bible in an ironic tone and studying it with the help of commentaries, you will like this.
Stephen Woodford (Rationality Rules) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqZMgLgGlYAWvSU8lZ9xiVg He has every possible topic that has crossed my mind as a new atheist. His videos on Jordan Peterson’s preaching were very helpful.
Cosmic Skeptic https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7kIy8fZavEni8Gzl8NLjOQ A very smart, vegan English young man.
Mister Deity https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOrE5EE4JH3CGwDQTsA2t_A Ex Mormon. The Mr Deity sketches are a delight, and the videos on Prager University are bitingly humorous. Fuck Dennis Prager indeed.
Apostate Prophet https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzREuchzOqiawpEpvEM0Tyg Turkish, raised in Germany in a Muslim family. Now an atheist, and pretty brave in my opinion. His country recently issued an arrest warrant for him because of one of his videos.
One Godless Woman https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3tVjiIF2isKHViQmgtws2Q Originally from Saudi Arabia, she lives in Canada now. If you want to hear about life under Sharia law, listen to her.
Prophet of Zod https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm0VjekR-4a-sUftCHzAAvg An excellent channel to help you against the blunt arrows of Christian apologetics and moral claims.
NonStampCollector https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDyWzuw_u0TBnRaoAcVg0jw The Bible sucks, man. Watch some wicked animation on the topic.
Neil Carter https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFxjf6bLmWX0F9fEvSMejGA If you’re deconstructing now, these videos will help you understand the abusive religion you’re leaving behind. God doesn’t get to be forgiven for things humans are judged for.
Rachel Oates https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC6ue7UYt1yeS621xmTMKrQ Ken Ham hates her too. I think you’ll love her. I have not watched her videos on poetry, I’m not into literary critique. But the videos about social and religious issues were useful for me.
Dr Bart Ehrman https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm9O8xILJQAs9LxaM4HiMOQ Come learn about textual criticism of the Bible, because it is man-made and contradictory. When you take it off the pedestal in your heart, your life will be better. Dr Erhman was a Christian when he started his studies. Then the knowledge he was acquiring slowly but surely made him lose his faith.

I just watched this, because this was one of the most cited analogies growing up, as a way to persuade kids and adults to become Christian, or if they were already Christian, to not focus on the life we know for sure exists (an idea that could be manipulated to further any number of goals).
This video isn't that long, and Prophet Of Zod is very calm and even keeled in his criticisms, so I like the style of a lot of his videos.
Ironically, I think this analogy can be used to make a fair argument against part of Christianity's beliefs about the afterlife. Assuming our lives only make up that little red bit, why should we be punished for things we did in that part for all of that rope and beyond (Hel)? Why should someone's actions (which may not even be objectively hafu) during a finite time period be punished for eternity? It simply doesn't make sense, especially if the punisher is suppose to be a parental figure.

It’s safe to assume that when Man of Steel went from the first part of a potential trilogy to the first part of an innevitable cinematic universe, a lot of ideas had to be repurposed both moving forwards and retroactively.
Batman v Superman and the coming Justice League movie seem to play with the idea of a post-apocalyptic “bad future” known as “Knightmare” where Darkseid took over the Earth and managed to turn Superman to his side. This, of course, means no such ideas were present in Man of Steel when it came out and in the years leading to BvS... but maybe, just maybe, there is something there now thanks to the magic of retcons?
There is a certain sequence in Man of Steel that stands out for how bizarre and seemingly out of place it is. In it, after being exposed to kryptonian atmosphere, Superman faints and has a strange “dream” or trance where Zod explains what will happen to Earth if they have their way. At the end of this sequence, Superman finds himself at the top of a pile of skulls... wearing a black suit...
Tumblr media
In Batman v Superman, the aforementioned “Knightmare” sequence is presented... would you look at that... as some kind of prophetic “dream” Batman has at one point. The sequence stands out for how bizarre and seemingly out of place it is, but it’s definetly more than just a dream, as elements from the movies’ real world are present in it despite Batman not knowing them yet.
Tumblr media
The coming Justice League movie is going to revisit the Knightmare future, at least briefly, and in this movie... Superman is wearing a black suit...

There’s about nine or ten days left before the Cell Games.   Dr. Brief is busy working on fixing Android 16.    He has specs from Dr. Gero’s lab, but they’re for android 17, and 16 has a completely different design, because 16 is truly an android, and not a cyborg like 17.    Meanwhile, 16 plays with Dr. Brief’s cat.    I’m not sure if it’s safe for the kitty to lick so close to 16′s open wound, but I’m not a robot or a robot doctor or a cat, so what do I know?

Bulma’s mom serves up cake.    Eat, drink, and be merry, I guess.
Tumblr media
Oolong and Roshi start stuffing their gross fingers into the cakes to claim them, and it’s pretty friggin’ gross.   Seriously, I’ve seen Frieza cut in half, but this scene is what really bothers me.    Those two can’t even eat that much cake anyway, so it’s just disgusting.   Chi-Chi is right to want to keep Gohan away from them.
Tumblr media
The others all chill out and watch TV.   This looks like a pretty cozy scene.
Tumblr media
I really want to know what the deal is with this show.

Vegeta can’t sit on the floor like everyone else because he’s the PRINSUVOLLSAYINS or whatever.
Tumblr media
Yamcha gets restless and decides to go outside to train for Cell.    Krillin offers to join him, and then Vegeta gives them shit for being no match for Cell.    Yamcha reminds Vegeta that he’s no match for Cell either, so maybe he ought to keep his mouth shut.   Yamcha’s like “Yeah, welcome to our world.”   And Krillin starts chanting “One of us, one of us.”
Tumblr media
Then Bulma arrives, having returned from Kami’s Lookout, and she’s all anxious to see how Future Trunks is doing, to the point where she crashes into these guys.
Tumblr media
This whole part right here just bugs me.    I don’t like how Vegeta gets lumped into a comedy gag like this.    Why wouldn’t he just move out of the way?   Or simply murder Bulma before she could get near?    That’s kind of his bit, isn’t it?  Also, I don’t really see Bulma being this kind of character.    Chi-Chi, sure, but not Bulma.   It just feels off.
Tumblr media
She calms down once she knows Future Trunks is okay, and then Baby Trunks grabs onto his hair.    Everyone laughts.    Well, not Vegeta.
Tumblr media
Never mind that shit!   Here comes Cell!
Tumblr media
This whole scene fucking rules.    Cell just smashes his way into a city, makes a giant hole in a TV studio, and when he puts his hand on the reception desk, it deforms as his hand moves towards it.     I’d call this Big General Zod Energy, except General Zod wasn’t anywhere near this cool in Superman II.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He asks where they film the TV that gets broadcast all over the world, and the frightened receptionist tells him that he needs Studio B on the top floor.   Cell just floats straight up and the floors rip open as he moves towards them.    None of that elevator nonsense like in Movie 7.    Cell just goes where he wants, how he wants.
Tumblr media
Back at Capsule Corp, Yamcha slips on Krilin’s bald head.    Vegeta’s probably watching them from the window.     “They’re right,” he thinks to himself as he watches Yamcha plant his bare feet into Krillin’s face.   “I’m one of them now.”
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Roshi watches aerobics girls on TV, and I guess in Dragon World they film that shit live, because Cell floats up into the studio and ruins the shot.
Tumblr media
They change it to a cooking show, and he’s there too.
Tumblr media
Then they switch it to... I guesss this is some sort of stage musical?   I don’t understand how TV works in this world.    They filmed all of these shows in the same building, live, and aired them on three separate channels?
Tumblr media
I don’t know what this was supposed to be, but it’s not shown from Bulma’s TV, so maybe this one was being taped.
Tumblr media
Finally, he ends up at Studio B, and smashes through the anchorman’s desk.
Tumblr media
Hyperbolic Time Chamber Update: Gohan has a nightmare about Cell killing Chi-Chi and Piccolo right in front of him.    Holy shit!    How does he know what Cell looks like?    How did Goku know what the androids and Vegeta were doing while he was laid up with the heart virus?
Tumblr media
I was telling a friend of mine how this liveblog is helping me recalibrate for the fanfic I’m writing.   I didn’t think I needed it, but this helps me remember what it is I’m trying to work from.    I gave my Super Saiyan OC a lot of reasons to have trouble sleeping, and at times, I felt like that was kind of dumb and cliche.    But now I realize why I did that in the first place.    Nightmares and sleepless nights are par for the course for Super Saiyans.   The only reason we don’t see Trunks having bizarre prophetic nightmares is because he grew up in one.    Showing him sleeping poorly seems kind of redundant, you know?
Tumblr media
Turns out, Gohan had a fever, which isn’t too surprising, considering the extreme conditions of this place.    Once again, Gohan apologizes for not being good enough or strong enough to live up to the expectations he has for himself, but Goku’s totally cool about this.    Goku’s been there, after all.    More importantly, Gohan is far, far stronger than Goku ever was at his age.    To put this into perspective, Gohan probably just now turned 11.    Goku was 12 when Bulma first met him.    As much as Gohan looks up to his dad, I think the reverse applies too.
Tumblr media
Goku tries to tuck him in, and  Gohan murmurs something about his desire to protect the others.    Gohan’s laser focused on this.    He may not enjoy fighting, but he’s completely devoted to the mission.
Tumblr media
Back to business, Cell is here on TV to announce his new tournament, the Cell Games.   First he introduces himself as the monster who killed all those people in Gingertown, Nickytown, and elsewhere.   He says he no longer needs to feed on people, but he will be kicking the ass of everyone who shows up at his tournament in nine days.
Tumblr media
Is that Piccolo’s TV, or Tien’s?    Either way, I find it hilarious.
Basically, the Cell Game only resembles the Tenkaichi Budokai in the sense that you can lose by giving up, or by falling out of the ring.   Otherwise, it’s a very different format.    Instead of an elimination bracket, it’s a gauntlet match.    Cell stands in the ring, and fights each competitor.    If he wins, the next guy steps up and he fights that guy, and so on.    The idea is to see how many of these fights Cell can win in a row with no time to rest.    In theory, the more fighters who show up, the better chance of them wearing Cell down.
Perhaps most critically, lethal force is not illegal, as Chi-Chi speculated.  If Cell kills you, you lose, not him.   Frankly, that just makes sense.    In the Tenkaichi Budokai, the idea was to defeat your opponent, not murder him, so lethal force would get you disqualified.
Tumblr media
But the Cell Games are for the fate of the Earth.    If Cell wins, he plans to kill everyone on the planet.   So why should he spare his opponents?  Why should he disqualify himself if he accidentally kills an opponent?
On the flip side, why should his opponents worry about killing him?    If there was a no-kill rule, and Goku managed to kill Cell, that would technically make Cell the winner, but who would care?   Also, what would happen if Goku managed to beat Cell by ringout?  Would Cell abide by the rules?   He never really explained what would happen if he lost.   I assume he just didn’t see that as a possibility, or maybe he expected his opponents to try to kill him no matter what, so it wasn’t important.
I’m not the kind of Cell fan who spends a lot of time looking for ways he could reform, although I do feel like it’s a shame that he couldn’t see the value of sparing the Earth and making the Cell Games a regular thing.   Like, let’s say he held this competition, and he survives to the end, win or lose.    Wouldn’t it make sense to stage a followup tournament for next year?     If the Saiyans could give him good sport twice, why not a third time?   And then the Cell Games just becomes this annual event where everyone gets together to see how many fights this bug man can win.
Tumblr media
But the reality is that Cell’s too big a dick for that.    His perfect form was built on thousands of innocent victims, and his tournament ring is sitting on top of farmland owned by a guy her murdered.   He killed that news anchor right before he announced this game, and he closes his announcement by blowing up part of the city he’s in.    Yeah, Cell loves fighting, and you might talk him into doing Cell Games II next year, but he also loves terrorizing helpless people, and he’d be doing that for the entire year until the next event.   I suppose this is what sets him apart from Vegeta and Piccolo.
Tumblr media
Anyway, everyone is suitably terrified by Cell’s announcement.    Cell is the first villain to announce his presence to the world since King Piccolo conquered it over a decade ago.   The Saiyan invasion was known to the world, but there was very little understanding of what was going on.   Goku’s role in that battle never made it to the news media, and the other Z-Fghters who did get televised all died in battle.    To the world at large, they just knew that East City got destroyed by aliens, then there was a battle in some remote location, a bunch of martial artists and camera crews died, and then the aliens were gone.
Tumblr media
This is something that’s always interested me about Dragon Ball, because I’m used to comic book universes where the main heroes and their adventures are well known to the public.  I guess Superman was sort of the origin of that whole idea, since he worked for a newspaper, and he was such a powerful character that it was big news whenever he did anything, even in secret.     In some of Superman’s earliest outings, he seemed very interested in keeping a low profile, like he didn’t even want people to know he existed, but the costume sort of undermined that idea.    Eventually, he settled into the formula of being a public figure, and then writing about his own adventures as Clark Kent.
Tumblr media
Other superhero franchises have followed that premise, although it gets kind of strained in places.  If Mr. Fantastic invented a flying car years ago, why does everyone in Marvel still use real world technology?   A lot of fantasy worlds try to sidestep that problem by having the super-powered characters exist in secret.    Harry Potter’s whole deal is that wizards are real, and they have a whole secret society going on under the nose of the rest of the world, although it’s not very clear why they felt it so important to do this in the first place.   The real reason is that J.K. Rowling wanted Harry to grow up in a normal household, instead of some parallel world where everyone knows magic is real.
Tumblr media
Dragon Ball sort of tries to have it both ways.     It’s mostly like the real world, but it can have advanced technology like the Hoi-Poi capsules and hovercars, and then there’s remote parts of the world where they don’t have those things.   Trucks with wheels are still a thing, probably because Toriyama likes to draw real cars and made-up cars and he saw no reason to have to choose.   As for Goku, he just goes in, whips ass, and leaves.    If there’s media attention for his actions, so be it, but he’s not interested in it, so he doesn’t pursue it.    One day the Red Ribbon Army got wiped out, and the world has no idea how or why.    One day, King Piccolo got taken down, and the world found out about it, but they knew almost nothing about the boy who did the job.   One day, Vegeta got sent packing, but he eventually came back, and no one knows who he is, or what happened in between.
Tumblr media
And Goku’s fine with that.    He sees no point in giving press conferences, or explaining What Just Happened to the rest of the people.    He’s a very minor celebrity for participating in the Tenkaichi Budokai competitions, but only hardcore martial arts fans would have heard of him.    I’m a pro wrestling fan, but I’d have to look up the last three winners of the G1.
And maybe this is one reason I dig this show so much.    Over the years, western comic books have gotten increasingly mired in pointless details.    You look at the new Spider-Man movie that’s coming up, and the general idea seems to be that Spider-Man needs Nick Fury to tell him what to do.    That’s how the comics have been for decades now.    These days you can’t be a superhero without some government agent telling you which way to pull up your tights.    It’s bullshit, but the writers think it’s more “realistic” that way.    Come to think of it, pro wrestling fell into the same trap a while back.    It used to be that you’d turn on wrestling and they’d just show a bunch of matches, and it was taken for granted that some unseen authority booked the card.    Now every American wrestling promotion has to waste time on all these in-story CEO’s, general managers, commissioners, and assistant general managers, and they all argue over which of them outranks the other.   It’s dumb.   Just let them fight.    Dragon Ball’s gonna let them fight.
