Sounds Familiar

Hi! This is my attempt to write for Kate’s @real-jane Follower Celebration! It feels like years since I’ve written anything, so I’m very happy that you helped me stretch my writing juices a little bit. I hope this will make sense, if not - I’m stil happy that I managed to write this!

Also, I hope you will accept my own character that I’ve been basing my works in progress on, Leah is so great and I love her to bits x

Type of Healing: Through psychic/emotional control superpowers of OC!Leah Novak

Pairing/characters: Bucky Barnes, OC!Leah Novak, Peter Parker, Sam Wilson

Warnings: hurt, trauma, No Way Home aftermath (that’s a warning for me)

Words count: 749 (Please forgive me the 24 above the limit!)

Public events, sponsored and endorsed by the government, were the most uncomfortable sceneries for Bucky and Leah. He was avoiding the public judgement with all his leftover patience, and Leah couldn’t stand the fabricated atmosphere of pride and empowerment. Yet, they stood on the side of the biggest lecture hall at the New York University, with fake smiles plastered to their faces as Sam Wilson gave another speech of the month.

“Remind me please, what educational value do we bring to these students today?” Her whisper gets lost in the crowd’s laughter and ovation, but he hears it vividly. It draws a low chuckle out of him and he shakes his head in disbelief.

“Inclusivity, sense of community, and life wisdom.”

“I can imagine these quotes on the merchandise already. Add a NYU logo and you’ll be a rich man by the end of the year.” She smirked up at him and held his shiny gaze for a millisecond. He was itching to get out of the room full of horny teenagers and overly excited young adults, she could feel the annoyance peeking through his aura. “Wanna sneak out before the Q&A?”

And so, they did, right after Sam finished off his last anecdote that adorned his lecture. They lowered their heads as the hands of the students shot up to the sky, begging for their question to be chosen by the one and only, Captain America.

They walked side by side across the hall, timidly brushing their pinky fingers in a teasing game. The exchange of short looks between the two and the security guards was a formality, and Leah lead them to a small patio. Trimmed grass, a dozen of flowerpots, an experimental greenhouse and a few worn-out benches made the area calm enough for them to release the unwanted tension. But they were not alone.

A lean, composed young man was packing up a professional camera gear with a sorrow look in his eyes. Leah’s senses went on a haywire trip around her whole body; she could feel how his heart rate sky-rocketed when they both noticed him, as if he was able to sense them, too. She could feel his hands shaking, his heart skipping in something between fear and disappointment.

“Oh, hi! Uh, Sergeant Barnes, Le-uh, Ms. Novak… I-uh, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to interrupt you here,” his nervous, but deliberate rambling made Leah open up to her emotional curiosity. A blue hue flashed across her orbs when she allowed herself to gather his feelings and connect a few puzzle pieces together.

Bucky saw her do her ominous magic trick, so he attempted to play along.

“Don’t worry man, we were just exploring.” He sent a polite smile his way. “Are you studying here?”

“No, uh… I’m with Daily Bugle,” he waved around with his little press badge that was already glued together twice. “covering for Cap’s speech. Captain America’s, I mean. Sorry.” He stuttered and laughed nervously. The two approached him in a safe distance, but Leah took two steps closer than Bucky.

“What’s your name?” She asked curiously, still unable to grasp all the strings of his emotional state at once. He was heavily distressed, cornered by grief and sorrow.

“Uh, Peter Parker, ma’am.”

“Peter Parker. Sounds very familiar.” Leah smiled up at him and waited until he was brave enough to look up at her. She looked into his scared eyes and focused all her attention on him; she offered a handshake. Peter took a shaky breath and smiled back at Leah. She knew it was a sad smile.

Once she touched his hand, the blue sparks enveloped their weave.

“Can you let me in, Peter? I want to help you. I can ease your pain.”

Reserved at first, now he wanted to comply with all she could tell him. It has been weeks since he talked to anyone who knew him before Stephen Strange’s spell. He wanted to cry his eyes out as soon as he saw the pair, but instead Leah did it; her eyes spilled heavy teardrops as she embraced his hurt mind.

Peter couldn’t stop but think of all the memories that he had with Leah: the trainings, the check ups at the Avengers Compound, the shared battlefield. He showed her all that happened in the past months, feeling the heaviness lift up from his heart. His lip trembled at the realization that Leah will now remember him.

“Bucky, we are giving Peter Parker a lift today.”

Precious (Leah Williamson x Reader)

A chorus a voices protested as Leah held up her pick for movie night.

"Not again Leah." was the gist of it

The movie Leah held in her hand was none other that her favourite and the one where she had forced her teammates to watch as well. The one and only Lord of The Ring

Everyone grumbled and one by one they left the room to go to Katie's house. It was only when I spoke did Leah look up with a sad frown on her face.

"I'll watch it with you."

"Thanks Y/n," She laughed dryly "But you don't have to."

"No really," I got up off the bed to sit next to her "I love Lord of The Ring my favourite character is Legolas."

She looked at me in amazement then all of a sudden she squealed in agreement and jammed the CD in the DVD player. (Don't judge me, it's what I have at home)

(If you young people don't know what a DVD player is ... what a sad generation)

(I am also a teen ... so no judgement ...)

As we sat in silence, sometimes making commentary on how whiney Frodo was and how Sam was the real protagonist, I knew she was happy. We binged watched the entire three movies and when we stopped Leah realized it was already 2 a.m.

Since it was already so late Leah offered to drive me home.

She walked to the grinning as I did a horrible impression of Gimli, but I could tell for some reason she was nervous.

"Hey Y/n?" She stopped me just as I was about to close my door.

"Yes?" I opened it wider so I could look at her

"Thank you," She looked down as the ground, her cheeks donning a light pink "For watching the movie with me."

I grinned at her walking closer to her "No problem Leah, I had a lot fun."

"Really?" She looked up, curious.

"If by my life or death I can protect you I will. You have my sword." I quoted Aragorn, tilting my head to get a better look at her blushing face.

She grinned and quoted the next line "And you have my bow"

"Good night Legolas."

"Good night Aragorn."

It had been weeks since Y/n and Leah had watched Lord of the Ring and were now attached to the hip.

Since Leah was the biggest LotR fan out of the both of them, she decided to teach me Elvish.

I sucked at it.

Like really sucked. Every time she tried to teach it to me I kept getting lost in her eyes, or her hands, or lips, or well you get the idea.

It sucked but I got to spend time with Leah.

To be honest I never heard of Lord of the Rings until I heard Leah talking about it to Beth. She was telling Beth about how amazing the movie is, how perfect the casting was. As I stared at them from across the room I couldn't convey how perfect she was.

So I made it my mission to know everything about Lord of the Ring. I stayed up till the wee hours of the night reading the books, bing watched the movies several times to know the lines. Every time I almost fell asleep reading the books I remembered Leah's face and powered through it.

Now here I am listening to Leah speak in Elvish.

As I listened to her go on and on about something I decided to try my hardest to learn Elvish, just so I could tell her how I felt.

I sighed shifting from foot to foot in front of Leah's door

"Todays the day." I thought, feeling a rush of confidence making me ring the door bell. Only a few seconds after the girl I fell for so long ago opened the door.

Her bright eyes shining, with a slight smirk poking through her face.

I breathed in deeply before I poured my heart out to my best friend.

"Leah Williamson, im mel cin. Im wanted na treneri- cin since mín were in cín car singing at i caw -o mín lungs na Despacito. Im asked cin cín favourite poet a cin answered Pablo Nuerdo, a so "im mel cin ú- knowing how, ben ir, ben o where. Im mel cin simplui, ú- problems ben pride: im mel cin in hi té because im ceri- ú- know anui other té -o loving but hi, in which ennas na- baw im ben cin, so intimate i cín bor upon nin chest na- nin bor, so intimate i ir im dant- asleep cín eyes close." im know how big -o a fan cin are -o Legolas, but im baur cin na n- Aragorn so im tur- n- cín Arywen. “im Would Rather Share er Lifetime With cin Than níf All i Ages -o hi ambar eriol.” Cin, Leah Williamson are nin precious."

"Leah Williamson, I love you. I wanted to tell you since we were in your car singing at the top of our lungs to Despacito. I asked you your favourite poet and you answered Pablo Nuerdo, and so "I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close." I know how big of a fan you are of Legolas, but I need you to be Aragorn so I can be your Arywen. “I Would Rather Share One Lifetime With You Than Face All The Ages Of This World Alone.” You Leah Williamson are my precious."

It took her a bit to translate but because of my nervousness I thought she was going to reject me, so I started to walk away until I felt a warm hand on my arm spinning me around and soft lips on mine.

When we broke away she leaned her forehead on mine before whispering

"Im'll gladlui n- cín Aragorn."

"I'll gladly be your Aragorn."

I know this is like taking a bat to the beehive but... I really wanna hear your opinions on the whole... Imprinting thing

(Note before we go any further: this meta is written purely about the shapeshifting aspect of the Quileute characters, I don’t at all get into the racism in Twilight or any kind of social commentary. This is a purely watsonian meta. Others in this fandom have already addressed the racial dynamics at play, far more eloquently and knowledgeably than me. If I say something in here that’s in any way offensive, that’s not my intention and I’m open to criticism.)

Ooh imprinting.

I touch upon it here, basically I hate it.

The imprinting is part of this theme where the shapeshifters lose their free will and autonomy, and I find it tragic, cruel, and unnecessary.

First of, the fact that they have to phase at all.

They’re made warriors to protect their tribe. There’s no choice involved, only genetics and magic irrevocably changing their lives, and at a ridiculously young age, too. Sam is the oldest of them, and he is 19.

Violence is an inherent part of what they become. Their purpose is to protect the tribe, by fighting vampires. Not only is this insanely dangerous (we see Jake get so injured by a single vampire that he’s bedridden for weeks), but if they succeed, they will have killed. In the singularly brutal manner of tearing apart and burning someone who looks a lot like a human, who talks and might beg for their life, at that. And I remind you, most of these shapeshifters are literal children. They might not see vampires as people, but all the same, killing one can’t be good for their mental wellbeing. (Thought: Perhaps an argument can be made for Laurent’s death having a part in the turn Jake’s personality took? Some, though not many, of the symptoms for PTSD do fit. I don’t know enough about PTSD to pursue this train of thought, but it occurred to me just now, in particular he becomes quite aggressive and prone to outbursts after that incident, so into a parenthesis it goes)

Not to mention how inhumane that responsibility is. Vampires in the Twilight-verse are terrifying, and the shapeshifters might have the power to fight them. But (and this is where I plug one of my all-time favorite animes, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, as it asks the question “Is it okay to sacrifice yourself for others?” because that’s... well there’s a parallel to be made to the shapeshifters. It’s on Netflix!) does that mean they should? Is it really their responsibility? Again- they’re kids!

Then there’s the time Sam lost control, and accidentally mauled the girl he loved. And it’s so cruel to both him and Emily. Sam never chose to have to control himself in the first place, he never chose shapeshifting. He didn’t choose to imprint on Emily either, and he didn’t choose to lose control that day. At no point in the series of events that led to Emily being mauled did Sam have any real choice, and yet he will shoulder the guilt for what happened for the rest of his life.

These kids get superpowers, and several of them seem to enjoy being shapeshifters, but the fact remains that they now carry this huge responsibility to protect their families and homes, doing so is incredibly dangerous, they lose out on their regular lives, and they can’t opt out of it.

This all sucks, but then we get to the fact that they are deprived of their free will, as their alpha can issue an order they physically can’t break. The alpha becomes alpha because of bloodlines, not because of a democratic election. Jake got a mockery of a choice in that he could choose to become alpha himself, or let Sam continue, which was really just choosing between a rock and a hard place. There is no limitation to what this order can be, from “don’t say X to person Y” to “let’s kill someone you love”. Jake has to struggle to break that last one, and he’s only successful because of the bloodline thing letting him become his own alpha.

Oh, and there’s the massive invasion of privacy when they have a hive mind. Cool concept, less cool to have it be reality. Leah is the poster child for how a hive mind can backfire, and they can’t opt out of this.

I’m not good at gifs, but the shapeshifters just make me think of that gif of someone flicking a lightswitch on and off, “WELCOME TO HELL!”. Of course, Twilight in general is a pit of despair for everybody, so I suppose that gif really is... well it sums up all of canon.

So, we have these kids aged 19 or younger, as of Breaking Dawn they skew as young as thirteen, their lives are turned upside down by something they can’t opt out of, they must shoulder this huge responsibility to protect their homes and families from the terrifying threat of vampires, and on top of all of that, they must obey orders that are so irresistible, they can compel them to harm someone they care for.

With all of that in mind, you’d think that the shapeshifters had enough on their plate. That through all of this they would at least retain their selves, and be able to look forward to a future where they could stop phasing, and go on to live normal, human, lives.

Yeah, NOT IF THEY IMPRINT.

I’ll just quote Jake’s description:

Everything inside me came undone as I stared at the tiny porcelain face of the halfvampire, half-human baby. All the lines that held me to my life were sliced apart in swift cuts, like clipping the strings to a bunch of balloons. Everything that made me who I was—my love for the dead girl upstairs, my love for my father, my loyalty to my new pack, the love for my other brothers, my hatred for my enemies, my home, my name, my self—disconnected from me in that second—snip, snip, snip—and floated up into space.

I was not left drifting. A new string held me where I was.

Not one string, but a million. Not strings, but steel cables. A million steel cables all tying me to one thing—to the very center of the universe.

I could see that now—how the universe swirled around this one point. I’d never seen the symmetry of the universe before, but now it was plain.

The gravity of the earth no longer tied me to the place where I stood. (Breaking Dawn, page 237)

Everything that made me who I was disconnected from me.

Jake’s love for his father, his home, his very own self, it’s all gone now. And while I have thoughts on the authenticity of this imprint, whether it was organic, the description above is apparently how imprinting feels. It’s along the lines of what Sam, Jared, and Paul all describe.

I don’t think I can put into words just how devastating I find imprinting, I think the above quotation speaks for itself. And as with all other shapeshifter things, there is no choice involved.

We see its devastating effects in the Emily, Sam, and Leah debacle. Sam and Leah were serious together, so much so that they were engaged. Sam had fallen for and chosen to be with Leah. Perhaps they would have broken up eventually, but Leah was still the choice he made. Then he imprints on Emily, and all that is for naught. He had to break up with Leah, who if she hadn’t phased never would have learned why, Emily and Leah’s relationship is ruined, and Emily must forever live with the knowledge that if Sam had his free will intact he would be with another woman.

Then there’s Jared and Kim. Kim crushed on Jared, but Jared never noticed her. The fact that they were in the same class is damning: if a boy is attracted to a girl, he's gonna notice her. Jared never did.

Quil imprints on Claire, who is a toddler. That’s just a recipe for misery and disaster all around.

And I’ve only touched the shapeshifter side of things. They lose their autonomy and freedom, but the imprintées draw the short straw too. They’re now responsible for this other person’s happiness. Sure, having someone who’ll be whatever you need them to be sounds nice (well, it sounds horrifying, but I’m playing ball) on paper, but you can’t opt out of them being like that. The imprintée can’t say “Sorry, not interested,” and she certainly can’t shut the imprinter out of her life, not without irrevocably ruining the imprinter’s life. The imprinter needs her. She’s the center of his earth now, but she didn’t choose to be.

Imprinting is a liferuiner for everyone involved.

Then we have the question of what imprinting is even for. I’m afraid I agree with Billy, that it’s for procreation. We see Sam, who was dating a woman about to phase (even if Leah isn’t infertile, she’s a warrior now. She can’t run in the woods and fight vampires, and gestate and nurse a child at the same time) conveniently imprint on her cousin, who as cousin to Leah is from a shifter bloodline. Claire, as Emily’s cousin, has those same genetics. Paul imprints on a woman from the Black family line. Jake is the outlier, but either Renesmée’s gift helped that imprinting along, or he imprinted because of the offspring they could potentially have (I firmly believe it’s the former because the latter... NOPE. Also, I can’t imagine whatever magic drives imprinting would want vampiric progeny for the future generations. Regardless of Renesmée’s person, her biology is wired to desire human blood. That’s exactly what Jake is supposed to protect people from. Bad match.).

I just.... ughhh. God, I hate imprinting so much, and on every level.

To me, everything about the shapeshifters is about free will, autonomy, and the loss thereof. And it would have been beautiful if their story was about reclaiming that, but it isn’t. None of this, with the exception of the alpha orders, is even acknowledged.

So, in summation, yes I hate imprinting, but it’s only the horror cherry on top of a very sad and problematic cake.

WHAT I CURRENTLY WRITE AND DON’T WRITE

PAYMENT - COMMENTS EQUALS NEW CONTENT (PLEASE READ)

(Characters and fandoms for which requests are open are below the cut so if you don’t want to read the guidelines, you can just scroll down there. However, I do recommend you to at least skim through the “I don’t write”-section to make it easier for both of us!)

MY ONLY RULE:

If you make a request, anonymous or not, you have to leave a comment on your fic. (Read more about why here.) Even better would be if you reblogged it to help get my work out to more readers!, but I will settle with a comment if you, for some reason, don’t want to reblog.

This means there should always be a minimum of one comment under every requested fic I post - if I see that this isn’t being followed, I’m going to stop writing requests. Simple as that.

With that said, don’t bother requesting if you’re not ready to make this exchange because that’s just unpaid work.

I DON’T WRITE:

Smut.

Songfics.

Headcanons.

Specified and inappropriate/illegal age gaps. Example, an underage student and an adult teacher.

Specified body types.

Body image issues & ED’s.

Male reader.

POC reader.

Specified physical features. (Hair colors, eye colors, etc.)

I try to stay as neutral to physical appearance as I possibly can so that everyone gets an equal chance at emerging themselves into the role, no matter the reader’s ethnicity, height, build, and so on.

Writing plus size!reader and writing about eating disorders and body immage issues is too triggering for me as I, myself, struggle with body dysmorphia on a daily basis.

TO THINK ABOUT WHEN REQUESTING:

Don’t be too vague with your request. For example, a request asking for a fic where “the reader is a character x’s sister”, or "the reader is shy” or”sassy”, is not enough for me to go on. I need a scenario, a plot, an action, an endgame, or a dialogue prompt.

Contrary to the previous point; don’t make requests with too much detail or too long of a timeline, either. I don’t have the energy nor time to write requests that are spread out over eternity and that would end up being as long as a novel.

When requesting prompts from my prompt-lists, ALWAYS include the number and name of the list, not just the quote. The lists you can request for are the following:

Don’t get pissy if you request something and I kindly tell you that I don’t write that kind of thing, whatever it may be. I’ve had to deal with this a lot lately and it’s really annoying. All writers have their own, individual preferences, and that’s their right.

Keep in mind all that is written above, and feel free to send several requests if you want to guarantee that you get at least one of them done - some things are easier to write than others and I always appreciate having requests to pick from depending on my mood and current motivation.

Can I am why you’re not a ‘fan of imprinting’ as you put it? I get that it takes the choice away from the imprinted but if they still feel the love and get love in return then I don’t see a problem with it. And also I think the imprinting on minors being bad is kinda bs, bc it’s explicitly stated that it’s a platonic love (or brotherly) until the imprintee chooses otherwise

I’m really big into free will–not having a choice kind of kills the romance for me. It’s the same reason I’m not into fairy tales or myths where there’s a love potion or Cupid’s arrow. It just feels kind of fake if there’s literally some magical force outside of the people’s control dictating who they fall in love with and when. Sam was happy with Leah--he wouldn’t have dumped her for Emily if not for this outside-force-magic. It’s not so much the “love at first sight” aspect–that would be fine. It’s this quote, from the guide:

No matter the age of living conditions of the human, the werewolf automatically becomes whatever the human wants him to be, at the loss of his personal free will.

This is what really gets me–at the loss of his personal free will. There’s an example of this when Renesmee at like, what, all of two or three weeks old gets up and dance-walks just like Alice:

Jacob had burst into applause, because that was clearly the response Renesmee wanted. The way he was tied to her made his own reactions secondary; his first reflex was always to give Renesmee whatever she needed. But our eyes met, and I saw all the panic in mine echoed in his.

That just personally gives me the creeps! Being controlled by the wants and desires of someone else, having their wants and desires override your own, is just … I don’t know. Like it’s amazing when someone chooses to be loving and supportive, because you know they don’t have to. But with imprinting, they don’t have a choice, which makes it feel less meaningful to me? It’s like the difference between someone working at a soup kitchen because they have been sentenced X number of hours of community service vs someone who just volunteers their time. They’re still doing a good thing, but it’s because some outside force compelled them to. They don’t have the option NOT to do it, but the volunteer does, which makes the volunteer’s work more meaningful? Isn’t a partner loving and supporting you because they want to more romantic than them having no choice but to cater to your every whim because of some magic? Just me?

That said, I know in fandom and fic people write imprinting differently, and put less focus on the “loss of free will” stuff and make it more like the “Soulmate AU” kind of stuff you see all over Tumblr. That’s more palatable to me but still not my thing. I get the fantasy of it: of being sure this is the one, of knowing this person will never betray you, and will always give you want you want/need.But what I think is so beautiful and romantic–and scary!–about loving someone is that there’s a lot of risk and uncertainty. “Do they like me back? Will it last? Will we spend the rest of our lives together or will we have a horrible break up and end up hating each other?” You don’t know! You have to take that risk! With imprinting there’s no risk. There’s no choice. There’s no uncertainty and that makes it, personally, less interesting to me.

This was definitely a 'keep-a-second-pair-of-panties-ready' fic. I enjoyed ever second of it, can't wait for more of you to come!

Electric Lizard by @lipstickandwhiskey **fluff** (Priestly x Reader) Summary - The guy with the bright hair always comes into the beauty supply store you work at, buying a bottle of hair dye each week. What happens when he asks for some help? Warnings - Super-cute fluffy as hell Priestly. He’s just so cute and sweet, guys. I finally got to watch 'Ten Inch Hero' last weekend and I fell deeply in love with Priestly. He's such a sweetheart and this fic is just perfect. The characterization is on point and it's so freaking fluffy... I love it!
