man the other thing that drives me crazy abt the whole "claiming judaism is an ethnicity and religion is race science just like the NAZIS" is that like....

what the nazis believed in was a mythical race of white europeans who were stronger and better than everyone else. they had 0 scientific, historic, or archeological proof of this. it was just a crackpot theory proposed to explain why white europeans were "better" than everyone else and provided an ideal for them to strive back to bc they thought that "pure" race had been tainted by racial "interbreeding"

jews saying judaism is an ethnicity is not bc it's in the fucking tanakh that they came from judea. it's bc there's MOUNTAINS of historical and archeological proof that jews came from that area. there's historical proof of people encountering jews in the middle east. there's firsthand accounts from jews themselves that survived diaspora that lived in that area. jewish DNA, regardless of other race, has a great deal of similarity w arabic DNA. there's MOUNTAINS of historical and archeological evidence that traces the movement of jews OUT of the area and into the rest of the world and the subsequent movement of jews for the next few thousand years as they kept getting kicked out or murdered

does any of that mean that israel should have displaced the people already living there and subjected them to decades of inequality and atrocity? fucking obviously not. but 1) denying historical and archeological fact to throw around your pet antisemitic conspiracy theory makes you sound like a qanon fuckass and 2) comparing that to white supremacists making up a mythical pure white race is just fucking insane and incredibly deeply antisemitic

like you don't have to make shit up to condemn what israel is doing, I promise you. you can acknowledge the nuance and hardship of history without condoning what israel does. israel doesn't need to be made up of pure europeans for you to criticize it. bc believe it or not, europeans are not the only people on earth capable of committing atrocities or having enough autonomy to do so.

i think what's becoming clear to me is that we're not supposed to be on the doctor's side here re: the way he's treating martha! he's being a dick to her for no reason because he is traumatized after losing rose, and she's getting the brunt of it, and that is decisively The Point. but the thing is, i cannot watch this and separate it from the fan reaction, which was to look at an incredibly wonderful lady -- a lady shown repeatedly and textually to be overlooked by the doctor for no other reason than Him Having Issues -- and say "actually, it's her fault for thinking she could ever measure up to rose."

i am so viscerally uncomfortable as i watch because no one was ever meant to hate martha. the show is demonstrating her value and her compassion and her intelligence every episode, and it repeatedly shows us moments where the doctor overlooks that because he's mad at her for not being rose. and i am one hundred percent rock solid certain that if martha had been white, the vitriol towards her would have been much more of a lukewarm "she's not as fun as rose, but she tried!" AT BEST. assuming that anyone even hated her. she might have been seen as sympathetic if she was a cute little white girl.

i've talked about princess weekes' video essays before, but this is another one that resonates with me — for a long time i've been trying to articulate why i still hate twilight, beyond "bad craft" reasons. princess nails it, and she does it without ever implying that there's no place for reading books like this. with the threat of a new tv adaptation, i think any of us who have cared about, reviled (for wrong or right reasons), or given thought to the twilight series could learn from this video.

im seeing ferrari fans worried that lewis hamilton fans are going to be awful about ferrari if ferrari dont prioritize/treat lewis as the main driver. as a ferrari fan in most all motorsports i completely understand that sentiment because the team is very much worthy of respect! HOWEVER—

that is in no way going to be comparable to the racism lewis is going to face now hes a ferrari driver. a lot of europe has some naive ideas about their nationalities and racism and that allows it to run rampant in many countries. the moment tifosi perceive him as unappreciative of his seat or ungrateful towards the team or not a team player (accusations which have been leveled against lewis before) its going to be a fucking nightmare for him and every black f1 fan who ends exposed to that shit.

yk i don’t want to come across as snippy or bitchy with prev anon which is why I held back on my response to make it kinda funny... but i slept it off, feel more refreshed now, and i still feel irritated by it.

it is so incredibly grating that every time i (and others in similar position) identify racism/racial bias the response is always a counter that ignores the existence of racism. historical hetalia is actually quite popular within this space and honestly erotic art isn’t (because of the 2018 ban and tbh and understandably not a lot of people are comfortable posting porn or suggestive art on their blogs). so i present a follow-up question: whose history receives attention?

it just feels deliberately obtuse to pretend that race doesn’t exist because if i had centered white people in my historical artwork it would’ve performed well. and i have evidence: my yugoslav doodles. now obviously they didn’t perform as well as amelia since serbia and croatia are rather niche canon characters (and i acknowledge the difference in recognition within european regions) -- however, i think it’s very telling that they outperformed significantly compared to my colombo conference and undivided pakistan & china at bandung pieces. what is the difference here? china is a main character in the latter and india and indonesia are both canon and recurring characters in the former. i think the answer is obvious unless you are deliberately trying to factor out race. 

we have to stop pretending like race and western bias does not play a role in shaping our likes and interests. racial/colonial bias is not something that exists within a vacuum or manifests only in bigots. it’s insidious, it’s structural, it’s psychological. racism is hard to identify for those not specifically affected by it and that’s purposeful. so it’s paramount to not dismiss it as a factor when identified by someone who is.
