Thoughts on 1.09: Nina and Maggie talk in the coffeeshop

I am going to assume that “Everything is meant” and point out that Nina and Maggie’s mentioning when they used to be “up all night” could be interpreted as foreshadowing, given that they both stay up all night (together!) during the events of episodes 5 and 6. 

I also find it interesting that Maggie makes it clear that she is not judging Nina for drinking. 

My first thought was to contrast it with how Aziraphale does judge Crowley for drinking during the Job minisode and also how other angels/Heaven seem to generally judge Aziraphale for eating and drinking. However, it also reminds me of how Aziraphale does not judge Muriel for choosing not to drink the tea and is very understanding overall to "Inspector Constable."  I think his interactions with Muriel (as well as the fact that he has certainly gotten over his aversion to alcohol consumption) show character growth! 

Lastly, I cannot be the only one who was blown away by this, but I am so, so happy that Maggie’s great-grandmother “in a corner of Mr. Fell’s bookshop” in the 1920s. 

Like, (1) this suggests that Aziraphale knew what records were and probably listened to them regularly in the 1920s, which is very early for him! 

(2) The 1920’s fall between the holy water fight and the church scene, so. Does he have any extra feelings about the record because it might have helped him get through that lonely period? 

(3) Unless Aziraphale is miracling them, intentionally or unintentionally, Maggie’s family has to know that he’s some sort of cryptid! He has been their landlord for a solid century! 

(4) I love that Aziraphale was helping women (or at least, one) to start up their own businesses, and I might need to headcanon that the record shop is passed down mother-to-daughter.  

(5) I just can’t imagine how chaotic it must have been for Aziraphale to allow an evidently successful shop to operate out of the same building / space as his “Thou shalt not buy anything” bookshop. How did the records shop maintain enough customers, and what did those customers think was going on? 

(6) The fact that the record shop and Maggie’s family have been Aziraphale’s neighbors for a century just gives me so many extra feels about Aziraphale forgiving Maggie her rent.  Like, she may or may not have believed him, but I feel like Aziraphale was genuinely distressed by the thought of Maggie and the record shop leaving and then someone new/different moving in. It would just be too fast!

ON THE WAY UP IN '89 -- THE ULTIMATE ANTI-STAR DOING ROCK STAR THINGS.

PIC INFO: Spotlight on the late, great Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) signing a copy of "Bleach" at a Rough Trade record store in the UK on December 4th, 1989. 📸: Bruce Pavitt (founder of the Sub-Pop label).

OVERVIEW: "The shot was taken during Nirvana’s first European tour, a tumultuous time for the band before they blew up, with Kurt even having his passport stolen, as well as trying to jump from a speaker tower at one point. When opening for TAD and MUDHONEY at the Astoria Theatre on November 27, 1989, the music press in London were bewildered, calling them “Sub-Pop’s answer to THE BEATLES," foreshadowing their ultimate success.

I think it’s kind of a cool shot given not only is this "pre rock star Kurt," but also for the fact a copy of BLACK FLAG’s "The First Four Years" lies behind him, as well as the legendary Earache Records "Grind Crusher" compilation, which largely put grindcore on the map. Eagle eyed viewers will also notice a copy of BAD BRAINS’ "Quickness" LP as well.

Most of you probably rolled your eyes seeing this post thinking “yet another post about how Kurt Cobain liked hardcore," and yes, you wouldn’t be wrong, I’m sick of hearing about it too as if it validates hardcore’s place in music history any more because of one guy. Nonetheless, it doesn’t hinder how important this band and Sub-Pop were in putting alternative, and largely punk on the map and rehashing it for a different audience.

In 1983 prior to the label, Bruce Pavitt hosted a radio show called Subterranean Pop after his zine on the University of Washington radio station, KCMU (now KEXP). He also DJed at two local clubs, The Vogue and the all-ages venue, The Metropolis. He was possibly the only DJ in the country spinning a set of RUN DMC, MINOR THREAT, and THE SMITHS. Also Kurt put down the "Tales of Terror" LP and SACCHARINE TRUST when no one knew what or how great that shit is; it goes without saying he was a real head."
