Teaser Tuesday

Hiya, Redacted Fandom! The most wonderful @ejunkiet and @pinksparkl tagged me to share a snippet of a WIP awhile ago, but due to some scheduling difficulties coupled with a surprise power outage, my brother's wedding, and then a rough migraine attack (all one after the other), I had to wait to share something. Thank you for the tag! Because this is so late, I'll say that this is an open invitation for anyone to share a snippet of any kind of WIP.

Below is an excerpt from a oneshot I'm working on written in David's POV. The story chronicles David helping Angel through their mother's recent death, reflecting on the similarities and differences of their experiences losing a parent.

The days since had been a bit of a blur. I helped Angel handle the arrangements and affairs, fighting the flashbacks of how haphazard and confused I had been when I had done the same thing for my father. I wanted to support them as much as I could, though I knew it was important that they feel in control, or at least as in control as possible, when it came to the details of their mother’s final resting place and the way they marked the end of her life.  The whole ordeal echoed my father’s death, but at the same time, it was so different.  I knew what it was to grieve a parent’s death. I had no idea what it was like to watch a parent die.  I was too young to ever remember my father taking care of my mother when she had gotten sick. My dad must’ve done all of this, though. And he did it all while taking care of an infant son, too. As I thought back on the memories of Mom he shared with me over the years, I realized none of them took place during the time of her illness. I wish I had thought to ask him about how he handled that whole experience. Had it made him too sad to talk about with me? Or was he sparing me the details of the truth?  Dad always tried to shield me from darkness and to find the light in everything. I wished he were here now. He’d know what to say to Angel.  I didn’t.  Not for the first time since learning of Angel’s caretaking, I wondered what it might’ve been like to see my dad decline from old age. To see him lose his sense of self to dementia and frailty. I imagined how my dad might’ve morphed from the strong, solid alpha I’d always known him to be into a weak, confused old man. I would watch helplessly as he aged, note how both his wolf and human form would betray him.  Would I have had it in me to learn how to help him shower and shave? Would I have been able to balance my responsibility to the pack with my responsibility of counting out my father’s pills for the week? Would I have patiently endured my father screaming awful things at me, simply because he was confused and frustrated and unable to express himself any other way? Would I have had the strength to tell my father that it was okay to die?  I hoped so, but I supposed I’d never really know for sure.  Angel did all of those things for their mom. And more.

part two: new instincts

Of course it would be Asher who clued in first.

It’s only been a few days since their trip to the doctor’s office, confirming the pregnancy. Just over four weeks. Birth control failures were rare but not unheard of, their doctor had assured them, and the rest of the pregnancy should proceed as normal. Congratulations.

They’d been booked in for their next appointment in a month’s time, and that was that.

The rest of the week had almost felt like a dream. He’d taken a few days off from the office, leaving Asher in charge of running the daily ops while he focused on making plans and settling Angel back at home, even as they teased him about it.

(“It’s still early days, Davey. I’m perfectly able to make my own lunch, thank you very much.”)

It’s late on Friday after work, when Asher comes over to drop off some paperwork, that the secret comes out.

He’d called ahead to say that he’d be coming by - that he had some paperwork that needed David’s signature, that couldn’t wait until next week. He’d been late, but that also hadn’t been unexpected - he always was, unless it was a work event.

But then he'd taken one look at them, his head tilted to the side and nostrils flaring as he inhaled, before his eyes had widened and he’d nearly dropped the messenger bag he was carrying.

“Holy shit.”

A low growl rises from David’s throat before he can bite it back, his mate’s fingers twitching against their side as their eyes widen in turn. He can hear the skip of their heartbeat, their weight shifting from foot-to-foot before they release a snort.

“It’s that obvious?”

They lean into David and he shifts until they can fit more snugly against his side, his arm finding their waist as he resists the urge to flash his teeth at his beta. There’s an aggression in him that he’s not used to, his protective instincts rearing to the surface with Asher’s proximity to his mate.

It didn’t make any sense. This was his pack, his family. But the knowledge doesn’t satisfy his wolf, and it lingers just below the surface of his skin, the same way it had the rest of the week.

“David.” He blinks, glancing down to find his mate looking up at him expectantly, an amused smile playing on their lips, as if it’s not the first time they’ve called his name. “Why don’t we let him in? We can talk about this more inside.”

Right. Releasing a breath, he steps back, catching his beta’s eye. “You heard them. In.”

“So. What gave it away?”

Ash offers them a grin from where he’s perched on the far end of the sofa, all long limbs and sharp elbows, a hand running through the wild tangles of his hair.

“David. He smells all…” He trails off, his expression turning contemplative, before he shrugs, as if he can’t find a word for it. “It’s instinct. I can sense it. Probably could even if he wasn’t projecting like a grumpy papa wolf.”

David does flash his teeth this time and Asher snorts, raising both hands. “Look, it’s natural. I saw the same thing with my cousins. My dad’s brother, he got all kinds of territorial before he got his instincts back under control.”

Territorial. The pieces click into place, and shit.

David doesn’t lose control. Not like this. He can’t afford to, not in his role as alpha, and especially not at the expense of his pack. His mate feels him tense up - they’re too close not to - and they squeeze his hand, the contact grounding against the rising tide of guilt.

Asher notices the shift too, his brow creasing with confusion, before it clicks. “David- it’s natural. Something that everyone goes through.”

He takes a breath and holds it, feeling the weight of their eyes on him as he regains control of himself. “I’ll handle it.”

Asher’s still watching him, a twist to the soft curve of his mouth, before he nods. “Whatever you say, big guy.” His attention shifts to his mate then, and he offers them a grin. “How long have you known?”

They match his grin with one of their own, and the tension in the room eases. “Not long. We got it confirmed earlier this week.”

“It has been a long time since there’s been a new cub in the pack…” Asher’s eyes narrow in thought, focused on the floor where his socks clash terribly with the carpet beneath the coffee table, but he doesn’t miss the way Angel reacts to the moniker, flashing them a grin. “Cute, right?”

“Does this mean we’ll need to deck out the whole family in baseball gear?”

Asher snorts once, twice, before he doubles over with laughter, shaking so hard that he almost falls off the end of the couch. David drops his head into his hands, silently asking what he’d done to deserve this as he resists the urge to groan.

Angel sits through it all with a smug smile on their face, looking pleased with themself, and with a low growl, he tugs them closer, wrapping his arm snug around them until they’re pressed against his side.

When Ash can breathe again, he shakes his head. “Never change, little boss.”

Glancing at the clock, he pushes to his feet, offering them a crooked grin. “Looks like I’m out of time. I just wanted to drop off the paperwork and check in.”

“Ash.” David’s voice is a low warning as he makes to leave, but he waves him off.

“I won’t be telling anyone, big guy. Well. Except for my mate, that is.” David releases a low snort, some of the tension in him easing. Ash knew how to keep a secret, when it mattered. “But David… when it comes to the next pack meeting, you know that the rest of them will be able to tell, right?”

His tone is still light, but there’s a seriousness in his expression that he doesn’t show often as he glances at David, a wry smile on his lips.

David releases a slow breath, not missing the way his mate’s hand slips to his side, settling against his hip and squeezing. “I know.”

“Good.” He nods, before grinning again, bright enough to flash his teeth, the tension of the moment dissipating as quickly as it had come. “Keep us updated? Let us know if you need to push anything, we’d be cool with that.”

“We’ll do that,” Angel agrees, matching his grin easily. “Thanks, Ash.”

“Anytime.” He waves two of his fingers in a cheerful salute, his grin as wide as anything, before he heads towards the front door. “Take it easy, both of you.”

The door clicks shut behind him, leaving them both in a comfortable silence. It’s always like this after Asher leaves, a moment of calm, steady quiet after the hurricane of his presence.

Angel lets out a soft breath, squeezing his side briefly again before shifting back to catch his gaze. There’s a gleam in their eye that he recognises, one that promises trouble.

“So. Wolves prefer baseball to basketball, then?”

1) I am torn between two names for Koda’s pupper - Whisper and Moro. Whisper is a character from Sonic the Hedgehog. Moro is the name of the giant wolf that raised San in Princess Mononoke. Both work, but I’m not sure. 

(Also, I’m just imagining after the internships. Like, hey guys, how was it?

Kaminari: “I found out I have a sister cause my dad is a serial cheater.”

Momo: “I was used to shill hair products, and repeatedly insulted about my weight.”

Tsuyu: “I stopped a drug smuggling ring.”

Fumikage: “Eimi and I spent the entire week trying to keep up, and I don’t know if Hawks ever figured out that Eimi and I are separate people.”

Iida: “… I tried to kill someone via vigilante justice …”

Izuku: “I tried to STOP Iida from committing murder via vigilante justice!”

Shoto: “I helped Izuku and Iida not get killed by Stain.”

Himiko: “I was also there!”

Kouda: “… I found a doggie. She can change size. She saved my life, and we’re friends now. She can carry me, and is very fast … She said I’d be a good hero …”

Everyone else: “Fuck it, he wins.”)

2) Glad you like “Seance”! I think my idea was, Fumi can kind of … “connect” with someone via their Quirk, which … considering most Quirk users he meets are ALIVE, doesn’t do much beyond giving him some mild empathy powers. Though with Eimi, it lets them fight as almost one person. It’s not until he meets people with Quirks that have Vestiges, like Izuku and [Redacted] that he starts really getting anywhere with his Quirk, or starts realizing it EXISTS in the first place. I’m … actually not sure if Fumi would realize his Quirk? Like, with Vestiges, if he trains it enough, he could probably see and speak to them. Currently, he’s just … passively empowering them to be able to interact physical objects? That he’s focusing on? Like with the Ouija Board (I’m trying to think of limits so Fumi can’t just wholesale SUMMON GHOSTS).

Though, now I’m imagining he figures out his Quirk, gets it working, and then meets AfO.

AfO: *smooth, charismatic recruitment speech*

Fumi, looking at the literal ARMY of angry Vestiges around AfO: “Sir, I’m going to have to respectfully decline.”

Honestly the fact that Koda’s internship starts with ‘I need a new mentor because mine got hit with a bus’ and ‘the world is full of free dogs!’ he’s really just swinging between great time and bad time.

Also my only name thoughts is because I keep thinking of the size changing dog from Danny Phantom, which is Cujo, named after the Stephen King book. Which.... worked in DP but is too dark for Koda.

Re: Fumikage:

Yes!!!

Honestly I’m liking it on just. Being able to click with someone’s Quirk mentally. But yeah he mostly hasn’t expanded on it because he doesn’t realize it’s there. He just clicks into Eimi’s energy because he’s used to it it takes no effort.

And now it’s getting a touch stronger already as he clicks with his classmates in battle, but it’s not as practiced on others so it’s more ‘general vibes’ rather than full on connection.

Plus! He’s now actually constantly around a bunch of Ghosts thanks to Izuku and [REDACTED]. His passive ability to sense them is constantly being activated, which has him looking closer, and eventually he’ll be able to see them properly.

Also YEAH The looking at AfO the most haunted motherfucker is just. OOH BOY.

“Show it to me,” Sherry demands as soon as the pantry door closes behind her. Asher sputters uselessly, hands on his hips, but his mother puts an end to it with one wave of her manicured hand. “Asher Chao Fah Talbot, I gave you that face, and I know when it is hiding something. I want to see it.”

“I never could get anything past you, Ma,” Asher says with a shake of the head, shaggy blonde-highlighted bangs framing his face and boyish grin. Out his pocket comes a plain black ring box, and Asher opens it excitedly to reveal a gold band with an orange stone inlay. Even in the dim pantry ceiling light, it gleams and glimmers like flames.

“Ooh, that’s a pretty thing,” Sherry says with a low, appreciative whistle. “Milo helped you pick that out, did he?”

“Heyyy!” Asher shoves the box back into his pocket with an affronted whine and big puppy dog eyes that never worked on her for a minute. “You don’t know that-”

“I do, because he told Marie who told me, and your mate will know too if you dilly dally.” Sherry shoves the container of rice into his chest and a wagging, admonishing finger in his face. “You go propose to that delightful person out there before they see sense.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Asher starts to ask when his mother turns him around and out the pantry door, into the busy dining room.

“Here, Sherley’s about two and a half. This is the time he made friends with the neighborhood dog and figured ‘hey, I’ll be a wolf one day. I’ll pee like one.’ Dad says-”

“Maddy!” Asher yells, melodramatically throwing himself on top of the open photo album between his sister and his mate. “They don’t need to hear the Captain Canine story, come on!”

note: I named his mom Sherry after a couple at the farmers market I really like, and Asher’s middle name is Prince in Thai 🧡

Some sad HCs I had for redacted listeners

Sweetheart:

- when Milo bridged with Sweetheart, they definitely felt a power drainage. I think that his core definitely took a bit so that he could shift. But SH won’t tell him that cause they know that he’d freak out and blame himself. I like to think it just took them a while to recharge.

- since Milo has iffy feelings about the department cause of his dad, sweetheart sometimes wonders if Milo just sees a repeat. This makes them push themselves harder to prove to Milo things are different

- when Milo talked about how cool Sweetheart was cause they can phase through walls and stay invisible cause it’s rare, I think SH worked their ass off so hard. So him just kinda passing it off as rare luck kinda hurts them cause they put in a lot of hours, days and weeks of training for it

Angel

- sometimes Angel feels like they are holding David back cause they are unpowered. He always says “mine and Ash’s mate are unpowered” and it makes them feel like they are a burden. Always having to be protected.

- also along with that, they also don’t feel as special as everyone. Sure they fit with Babe but, it’s just them two.

- sometimes when David says things like “are you stupid” and shit like that, sometimes it actually hurts. Even if it’s a joke, they are sometimes fed up with being the “dumb” one in the relationship.

Darlin’

- like I’ve said, they never felt like they belonged. Moving states and packs had to be hard. So they weren’t close to David, Ash and Milo etc.. So when David tells them that they are family and he loves them, Darlin’ feels like he’s only saying that because he’s the alpha.

- even though they know that David knows they are back and the whole Quinn situation and was upset, a weight feels lifted off their shoulders.

- feels useless when it comes to Sam or the pack talking about the inversion. They were outside. I see them in their wolf form running into that ward over and over until Babe tells them to stop. But they are part of the pack yet wasn’t inside with them or Sam.

Babe

- I think would have been the most scared to see Ash shift compared to Angel who was calm/nervous. I mean seeing your sweet partner just shift out of no where, and being scared cause now he’s a giant wolf. They didn’t mean to hurt him by being scared, it’s just a big plot twist.

- also I think Babe is the type to feel the emotions/energy in a room. Similar to like Calum, but human. So seeing Asher injured or the pack hurting emotionally, they absorb it but they are the happy go lucky friend/mate so they will take that energy so their loved ones don’t have to.

- probably didn’t want Asher to leave for anymore jobs after the inversion. They get he’s the beta and has to be there also cause it’s his job, but doesn’t like the idea of him doing big events. Also definitely pushes the idea of letting them tag along.

Lovely

- I know we all agree vampire Lovely would think Vincent doesn’t like their eyes anymore since that’s one of the biggest things he compliments on. So they try on colored contacts that matched their old eye color but I think contacts mess with vampire eyes, or like irritates them more so they can’t keep them in long.

- when Vincent kept apologizing and blaming himself for the situation with Adam, Lovely feels more guilt/pain because everyday they were together he always apologized and they feel like that’s all he can think about now in their relationship

- lovely misses the power they used to have. Sure they still have some of it, but they miss that feeling of electricity running through them. It reminds them of when they were alive and now it just feels like a tingle or numbness.

**Redacted Headcanon Ship Ask Game: Frenchie's Exclusive Colm & Marie Greer Edition** 14. When one has a cold, what does the other do? Colm never has a cold. Marie makes sure of it. But when Marie gets sick, she's a terrible patient. She can use her healing magic to mitigate the cold symptoms, but she can't entirely deal with them on her own and she refuses to let another healer touch her. So Colm has to practically lock her in the bedroom (hehehehehehehehe) and snuggle her constantly to keep her from getting out of bed and doing chores. He brings her tea and soup and tissues, and the only breaks he takes are to make sure Little Milo is entertained. He actually makes Milo play "assistant" and has him set the breakfast-in-bed tray and help him deliver it to the room. (Milo learned early on from his dad that there should always be a flower on the tray. Usually when he does it, it's a dandelion, but Marie loves that.) 15. When they watch a film what do they choose and why? Who gets the final vote? Marie always picks because Colm doesn't really care about movies or even enjoy them. He really only watches them to sit with her. And he's usually not even watching the movie. He's watching Marie watch the movie. With a big, dopey grin on his face. Because you know that cinephile wolfbitch (/affectionate) is talking to the screen, commenting on everything from the editing to the casting to the score, and saying how she would have done it differently in between providing pop-up movie trivia à la VH1. Marie is always sure to watch everything nominated for an award and she otherwise makes sure they work their way through AFI's Top 100 movies list.

He was an early baby, so he was pretty small when he was born. Not dangerously so, but enough that boy did Link worry

He’s got sort of orangey-brown hair, but at night (and twilight) it almost looks like it glows a little (as do his eyes a bit)

He definitely inherited his dad’s love of animals, cats are his favorites <3

He gets a little insecure about being so different from other Hylians, especially after [redacted redacted redacted]. But he gets more comfortable with his appearance and differences once he’s older :)

And his name means a couple things in Twili, but one of the meanings is wolf (Link wasn’t so thrilled after Midna told him, but she talked him into it)

W.I.P... Whenever, Whatever

Over the last few weeks, I’ve gotten tagged in a few W.I.P.W.s (thanks, friends! wonderful job, all), but I wasn’t able to share anything. I’ve been preparing for an important upcoming event and when I did have a bit of free time, I spent it working on some oneshot gifts as well as the Redacted Gift Exchange (shoutout to organizer of that event, @the-sugar-crash.) A few days ago, I finally finished drafting my contribution for the gift exchange, which means I was finally able to return to this longer Redacted fic I’ve been working on that has a few other snippets floating around my blog. All of this is a long-winded way to say, I’m sharing another excerpt of that fic today! Yay! For context, this is from a flashback chapter where Asher is seven years old and Milo is five years old.

Milo was about to ask Asher what was inside of the jar, but before he could, a tall man with wavy, auburn hair entered the kitchen. “Asher,” his deep voice boomed, startling Milo. “Is your mother home, too? You didn’t leave her at the store, did you? I-” His gray eyes fell on Milo. “Oh. Hello there, lad!” He raised an eyebrow at his son, silently demanding an explanation as to what was going on. “Were you on sale at the supermarket today?” 

Asher laughed, endlessly amused by his father’s sense of humor. “Dad!” he groaned, elongating the word into two syllables. 

With a bit of a nervous chill going down his spine, Milo realized that this was the first time he was meeting someone new all by himself. Usually, one of his parents or sister was there with him. Milo believed he had seen Asher’s father before, but sometimes, it was difficult to know who was who in the pack, especially when it came to the adults. Just as his parents had always told him to do, Milo tentatively extended his short arm up to Ciaran and looked him directly in the eyes. “I’m Milo Greer.” 

Never one to leave a fellow wolf hanging, Ciaran took Milo’s tiny hand in his own and shook firmly. “Ah, Milo!” he smiled. “Colm's and Marie's boy! How could I have forgotten? I know you from pack meetings, been seeing you since you were a wee pup, no bigger than my hand.” Although the boy seemed to have inherited Marie’s svelte features, the brown eyes were a dead ringer for Colm’s. “Now look at you! A fine young man if I ever saw one,” he commented. “I’m Ciaran O’Connell. Pleased to meet you properly.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Milo repeated, just as he heard his father often do. 

“Milo’s gonna stay with us!” Asher burst excitedly. 

Puzzled, Ciaran forced himself to keep a smile on his face, even as his mind raced with what Asher could’ve possibly meant by that statement. “Is that so?” he asked. Without pausing long enough for Asher or Milo to answer, he continued. “Asher, I take it that your mother’s outside?” He was taking wide strides to the door before he finished the question. “Aíne!” he called, panic and confusion lacing his call to his wife. “Aíne, dear?” He stepped outside, not bothering to put on shoes. “Aíne, did we just adopt the Greer boy?!”

Unperturbed, Asher turned to Milo. “Wanna see my room?”
