"Dancing in September" (2000) was a made-for-television drama originally aired on HBO. Reggie Rock Bythewood wrote, directed, and produced the Film, which stars a stellar cast of actors. It is an excellent film with a mindful storyline from multiple characters' perspectives. If you're familiar with Spike Lee's hard-hitting film "Bamboozled," then "Dancing in September" has a similar narrative without the blackface. Bythewood also wrote Lee's film "Get on the Bus," and without coincidence, "Dancing in September" aired the same year "Bamboozled" was released. Fascinating connection.
Director: Reggie Rock Bythewood Writer: Reggie Rock Bythewood
Starring Nicole Ari Parker, Isaiah Washington, Vicellous Shannon, Malinda Williams, Royale Watkins, Jenifer Lewis, James Avery, Jay Underwood, Marcia Cross, Michael Cavanaugh, Kimberly Russell, Peter Onorati, Rashaan Nall, Chi McBride, Juanita Jennings, Brent Jennings, Mel Jackson, Anna Maria Horsford, LeVar Burton, Tichina Arnold
Storyline Struggling African-American television writer Tommy Crawford (Nicole Ari Parker) gets her sitcom picked up by the neophyte WPX network through George Washington (Isaiah Washington), an executive hired to develop shows aimed at the black market. But, as the season wears on, Tommy's original high-minded concept slowly devolves into a dumbed-down vehicle for its breakout star, ex-hustler James (Vicellous Reon Shannon), whose struggles threaten to capsize the entire project.
Available on DVD and streaming services

(same anon as the last Hollywood au anon lol) were you inspired to watch may December by the last BKR video about Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore??? if so same and please if you haven't you should check out the video on melodramas and may December by broeydeshanel
WELCOME BACK FRIEND
i'll be so honest with you, i was inspired to watch may december because i am a todd haynes stan first (all my i'm not there (multi-actor bob dylan biopic) girlies say amen), riverdale stan second (all my reggie mantle girlies say amen) and a human third. and i had been putting it off for AGES so i figured hey it's a saturday afternoon and why not
and i loved it! i thought it was horrifying and disturbing and a psychohorror through the lens of a lifetime movie and i do actually remember the broey deschanel brouhaha on twitter at that time. i definitely agree that it's a melodrama (in another life i could have seen someone like late-career joan crawford play julianne moore's role which, if you know anything about crawford and i'm sure you do, wouldn't that have been WILD!!!) and i think it's fair to classify it as camp too.
also, i don't know where people are pulling this misread of camp that it's another subset of irony when camp is camp because it wholeheartedly believes in itself and i think may december wholeheartedly believes in itself.
from that insane musical sting when gracie is like, "i don't think we have enough hot dogs" that fucking movie is grabbing you by the throat and is like you're not going nowhere, bitch. sit down. strap in.
i could write a full thesis on why the poisonous deus ex machina of ummm so that just happened! humor has left a lot of audiences incapable of dealing with humor beats in weird, uncomfortable places like in a story like may december. and, understandable! i think i'm still trying to grow out of it in my writing sometimes.
but it reminded me a lot of husbands and a woman under the influence by john cassavetes actually, in the way the humor was so effortlessly dropped in in the maelstrom of weirdness and sadness and trauma.
anon i'm sorry for writing a full essay here and i WILL actually go back and watch that broey vid on your recommendation. and the BKR one too actually it's stuck somewhere in my watch later

Todays guest is funky 5 piece “Thoma and The Humbugs”. Their music will definitely get your feet tapping.
Q) Tell us a little bit about Thoma and the Humbugs? Members etc
A) Thoma and The Humbugs originally started when I (Thoma) returned to Adelaide to study at the Elder Conservatorium (Bachelor of Classical Composition) in 2019. The original members were all fellow students who helped bring to life the music that I had written since my previous album Thoma Henbest - An Invincible Summer. https://open.spotify.com/album/1bD0tQ9iVeLI1x8c7r038V?si=0gq4azE8T0CdKPk-iKp5Dw
The Humbugs are now most commonly;
Thoma Henbest - Lead Vocals and keys
Reggie Parker - Saxophone
Kyron Weetra - Backing Vocals and Bass
Barnabas Bossisto - Guitar
Zed Crawford - Drums
Esmond Choi (originally the moog synth bass player) has become an occasional bonus add on
Q) What are your short and long term goals?
A) Short term - Spread the good word, "The Humbugs exist, they sound groovy and they are a super fun live act to go see!"
Long term - Successfully achieve said short term goal?
Q) How was it dealing with the Covid Pandemic? Everything back to normal?
A) Well, I'm not going to lie, Covid kind of stole my dreams away... But, we turned it into a song at least! https://open.spotify.com/track/5LCyGM9YhKobiP9RMVAL7L?si=qh0HjO7ESvGHiX1DOxU7tQ
Is everything back to normal? I'd say probably not? People have learnt that staying at home is something to be encouraged and I think although the mainstreamers might be doing fine, the underground and niche scenes are struggling with crowd rehabilitation...
Q) What is your career highlight so far?
A) 2021 grand finalists in The District's battle of the bands was pretty good, so I guess the semi final verdict was probably the most thrilling moment of our career.
But we're also a far better band now, so shows like Hindley Street music hall for skullduggery or our Nexus Arts Fringe show would be up there too.
Q) Your music reminds me of bands like Jamiroquai and a little bit Earth Wind and Fire. Who are your main influences?
A) Bless you kind sir, as well as those guys, I'd include The Davids - Byrne and Bowie. Also, I don't do much without thinking, WWTMD (what would Tom Waits do).
Q) What is your writing process? Do you come in with songs already written, or is it normally a jam session?
A) Generally speaking, although nothing is ever normalised, I'll bring some scrunched up piece of fabric to the table, and the fellas, each with their own flavour, will help me sew and iron things out into the beautiful sonic garments that are The Humbugs tunes.
Q) With new venues like The Hindley Street Music Hall opening up, what do you think of the Adelaide music scene?
A) Haha, Well... Although I fear further ostracism, I will say; I think there are a PLETHORA of incredible bands in the Adelaide scene!
... And then there's a handful of gatekeepers whose interests don't necessarily lie within innovation, creativity and cultural development.
Q) Any gigs or new music coming that you would like to promote?
A) I'm currently in Europe for the next month, but I'm constantly writing and keen to play upon my return!
The only thing booked at this stage is going to be the proverbial tits though! Wednesday 19th of July at the cranker with my favourite Adelaide band Big Sloe!
Q) What Adelaide bands should we look out for?
A) BIG SLOE, I think they are sometimes up to 12 on stage? Which proves they really play for the love of music and not for financial gain.
I wouldn't think twice if I passed Harry Styles in the street, but I blush just thinking of the last time I saw those guys play!
Q) Apart from you guys of course, what would be your dream festival line up?
A) If we're dreaming... The Humbugs are playing just after sunset on a warm summer evening.
Before us, in a nice shaded spot, were some groove gods like Nicholas Jaar, Bonobo, the whole Kuti family - who have created a supergroup to make the people dance! Then, we play (and for some reason it's not totally underwhelming in comparison and everyone loves it and has a great time). After that there's a brief intermission where we all get to hang out together, followed by a long night of dancing to Groove Armada, Manu Chao, some spicy techno swing of some description and then, they bring out sleeping bags, there's no mosquitos, lots of space, the ground is surprisingly not muddy and we all fall asleep listening to Ludovico Einaudi and Yann Tiersen taking it in turns playing the Piano with a backing string section. In the morning, a mariachi band wake us up and there's breakfast for everyone!
Q) If you could invite 4 musicians to dinner (dead or alive) who would you invite?
A) Tom Wait, David Bowie, David Byrne and Nina Simone
Q) If you were given the chance to support one artist in the world, who would you pick?
A) Less of a dream, more of a - I think we'd be a great support act for them - Amyle and the Sniffers!
Q) If you were stuck on a deserted island with only one record, what would it be?
A) Blue Valentine by Tom Waits was my immediate thought, but maybe something less abrasive and instrumental like Solo Piano II by Chilly Gonzales?
Q) Where can people find out more about you?

WENDELL HARRISON 'THE CARNIVOROUS LADY' (1988)
Wendell Harrison was born in Detroit in 1942 where he began formal jazz studies for piano, clarinet and tenor saxophone. At 14, while still in high school, Harrison started performing & recording professionally with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Grant Green, Sun Ra, Hank Crawford … and many others.
In 1971, Harrison began teaching music at Metro Arts (a multi-arts complex for youth) where he also connected with Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney and Phil Ranelin…soon after they formed the (now legendary) Afro-centric TRIBE record label and artist collective. TRIBE used the Metro Arts complex as a vehicle to convey a growing black political consciousness. Wendell Harrison also published the very popular TRIBE magazine, a publication dedicated to local and national social and political issues, as well as featuring artistic contributions such as poetry and visual pieces.
In 1978 Harrison and McKinney co-founded REBIRTH, a non-profit jazz performance and education organization, in which many notable jazz artists have participated. Around the same time Wendell Harrison also created the WENHA record label and publishing company, which released many of his (now classic) recordings as well as those of other artists, such as Phil Ranelin, Doug Hammond and Reggie Fields (The Real ShooBeeDoo).
In the early 1990s, Wendell Harrison was awarded the title of “Jazz Master” by Arts Midwest. This distinction led Harrison to collaborate with fellow honorees and gave him the chance to tour throughout the United States, Middle East and Africa. Even to this day Wendell Harrison's recordings for the TRIBE, WENHA and REBIRTH labels have a large worldwide fanbase.
It is on REBIRTH that Harrison released the opus: THE CARNIVOROUS LADY (1988), which we are proudly presenting you today.
‘The Carnivorous Lady’ is a monster of an album featuring an all-star line-up that includes Marcus Belgrave (Ray Charles, Houston Person, Charlie Mingus) on guitar, Duke Billingslea (Martha Reeves) & Pamela Wise (Tribe) on keyboards, Larry Fratangelo (Fred Wesley, Dennis Coffey) on percussion and Shirley Hayden (Parliament/Funkadelic) on vocals.
On this fantastic sounding album (produced by the maestro himself) the listener is invited to experience a synthesis of what has been and what is now. The record shows Wendell’s trademark proficiency on saxophone, flute and clarinet. Although you can hear the 80ies creeping in with a smoother fusion sound, infectious boogie synths, R&B vocals and a lot of mind-blowing Jazz-Funk percussions…this album remains a very spiritual (and soulful) hard bop jazz record. From the first to the last note you get an irresistible blend of soul jazz combined with funky electric instrumentation…a groovy sound which is very much ahead of its time, yet overtly timeless and as relevant today as it was back when it was initially released. A total must-have that just begs for a prominent place in your record collection!
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the first ever vinyl reissue of ‘The Carnivorous Lady’ since its release in 1988. This official reissue is now available as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition (limited to 500 copies) and comes with the original ‘out of this world’ artwork.
Available worldwide May 26, 2023. Pre-order now from www.lightintheattic.net
An exclusive variant (#100 copies CLEAR Vinyl) is also available from www.lightintheattic.net

Hey there my dude hope you're having a good day
If you're still doing the qna I'd like to ask number 5, 52, 58, 82, 85. 127 and 134 to end on good note
5. turn ons as in things i like in a person or as in things they'd do? i've gotten shittier at answering this question as i've gotten older. i like nice hair and i love having my own hair played with. it's also recently come to my attention that a well-timed "good boy" would absolutely turn me into a sputtering mess
52. well i just hugged my dad on friday so i guess it's that
58. weirdest talent by far is that i can touch my tongue to the tip of my elbow. anyone who says it's impossible is either lying or doesn't have my weird ass proportions
82. "uh. hey, sup"
85. can't really think of any questions i'd be like, scared to answer truthfully, at least not right now. i'm a fairly open book
127. i've met a few famous-ish people, yeah. i met diplo and reggie watts (separately) at the same music festival, john darnielle, ish butler from digable planets/shabazz palaces, both members of run the jewels at the same time, former blackhawks goalie corey crawford, and thunder rosa, off the dome. also in my time as a server i've waited on chris broussard (former ESPN personality and giant piece of shit) and the guy from ace of cakes (total sweetheart).
134. oh hey my birthday is exactly three months from today! i have no clue what i would want. the OLED switch would be a nice upgrade but there's really nothing wrong with the one i have. a new desk chair would really hit the spot
