WHAT IF Robb Stark heeded good advice? Part 3
I'm back, lions and leopards. Your baby-eating deviant Lannistan is back, continuing the alternate timeline of "the North wins the war in this one." See Part 1: Things to do differently, and Part 2: How is that working out?
Where we left off: King Robb has a dawning realization that Lord Tywin isn't really fighting him on the battlefield. Everyone knows Stannis Baratheon is on his way to besiege King's Landing, and Robb understands King Stannis wouldn't be any more amenable to an independent North than the current Lannister regime is now. No matter who wins the battle, the Freys will probably turn cloak, and Robb can't afford that. He needs to have a productive discussion of terms before the siege, and the best candidate for that discussion is Acting King's Hand Tyrion.
King Robb's entourage will include:
His mother, Catelyn, who's proven an astute advisor, and has recent up-close experience with Tyrion.
Uncle Edmure, soon to become Lord of Riverrun.
Ser Stevron Frey is still alive in this one because they didn't attack Oxcross, so he didn't take a wound. He's the heir to the Crossing.
Lord Greatjon Umber, lord of Last Hearth and King Robb's fiercest supporter.
Ser Wylis Manderly, heir to New Castle.
Lady Maege Mormont of Bear Island.
Theon Greyjoy, heir to Pyke.
Their hostage Ser Jaime Lannister, the shiny thing to dangle in Tyrion's face.
Lady Brienne of Tarth, Lady Catelyn's sworn sword there to keep Ser Jaime in line.
There are probably some other people I should include in the team. I think it's definitely in King Robb's interest to bring this bunch, at least.
Team shows up at the Red Keep! If I were Robb, I'd give Ser Jaime several good meals along the trip and a bath, shave and clean clothes just before they let Tyrion see him.
Now this doesn't mean they're releasing Jaime into his brother's custody effective immediately. It means a prisoner exchange is on the table. They've brought him this far as a gesture of good faith.
...and in the spirit of good faith, Robb and Catelyn would like to see Sansa and Arya.
So Tyrion's all like, yes, of course. Here's Sansa! See, she's fine, we're taking good care of her!
Yes, good, and, what about Arya?
And Tyrion starts making shit up about Arya being such a trickster, always playing hide-and-seek, and this one time she didn't turn up for supper and it took the septa SEVEN HOURS to find her...
Cue the record scratch, freeze frame on Tyrion: "You must be wondering how I got here."
In all seriousness, the Starks' first suspicion is that Arya's dead and the Lannisters know it. Shit's about to get real, and Sansa starts making noises because she doesn't want to see her mom, big brother, and uncle get slaughtered or locked in cells. At some point Brienne gets in the middle of the fray and shockwaves everyone out to the edges.
Long story somewhat shorter: Tyrion insists they WANT to give Arya back to her family and they have people on the case of FINDING HER, and there's no reason to think she's dead. Sansa corroborates enough to tell the Starks it's still possible for Arya to turn up alive and the Lannisters aren't hiding her.
Back to the war camp outside the city walls. They let Tyrion sweat for a few days while Robb argues about terms and tactics with his team. Ultimately! Catelyn convinces her son that they still need to conclude the war sooner rather than later. Back to the Red Keep!
THIS TIME, as they know the Lannisters only have one of the girls to trade for Jaime, the Starks are in a stronger position.
From Tyrion's position: He's not convinced that Northern independence is even tenable, much less if they take the Riverlands with them. He's even less convinced there's any version of splitting the kingdom that his father would honor in the long term. He sees his assignment as getting Jaime safely home, and convincing the Starks to bend the knee, in that order.
With Team Stark at the table, Tyrion's questions are:
The Wall. Robb says yes, of course, it'll be the North's responsibility to maintain the Night's Watch. If men from the southern provinces want to volunteer for the Watch, they're granted safe passage through the North, but the Iron Throne is under no obligation. If the Wall is inadequately guarded and maintained, the North will bear the brunt of wildling raids.
Right, about that? Tyrion visited the Wall and hung out with men of the Watch and he'd like to know: what happens if the danger beyond the Wall is something much worse than a bunch of ragged people they don't like? How does the southern kingdom trust the North to protect everyone from a Snow Zombie invasion?
Robb's handwaving away that concern, but Tyrion has his reservations. He puts that one aside and moves on to:
The freaking Riverlands, I tell you. That's a problem. They want to take the center out of the kingdom? How are the other regions supposed to accept that?
Well, his daddy should've thought about that---
Yes, yes, his father ravaged the center of the kingdom, and it was easy. Of course once an agreement is reached, they'll withdraw their army from the Trident, yes. And how does the North intend to protect the Riverlands from invasion by other regional armies? It's either an independent kingdom, or not. That's the part where Ser Stevron and Uncle Edmure start asking to speak to King Robb in the next room.
After a tense discussion away from Tyrion, Robb comes back and assures him they'll have no problem with civilian travel through the Riverlands and of course they'll be responsible for protection. Edmure and Stevron still seem nervous but Tyrion is ready to move on.
If the new kingdom has a poor harvest and abrupt winter, they realize they can't ask the Iron Throne for food aid? They can buy food shipments from the Reach, sure, but if they can't pay for it, then they'll just have to suffer the famine. Which brings us back to the Wall.
If the Iron Throne gets word of a non-human threat coming from beyond the Wall, and the North has failed to support the Night's Watch enough to contain the threat, that's a problem for the entire continent. Again, Robb insists the Snow Zombies are long gone.
So Tyrion asks: But what if they're not long gone? If the Snow Zombies come back, and the North has failed to maintain the Wall, whether from hardship or disinclination, then the entire continent is in danger, and how does the North expect the southern kingdom to respond? The point is that if the North fails to protect the continent from supernatural threats, then its independence is null and void and the IT will re-annex the entire goddamn territory. Robb says okay, that's fine, because he is entirely sure the Snow Zombies aren't coming.
What about the Iron Islands? Are they part of the new independent Northern kingdom? No, they'll be another independent kingdom on their own. Oh really? So if the isles raid the North/Riverlands, they're prepared to deal with the attacks and not seek the Iron Throne's aid? Theon insists his dad won't do that. To which Tyrion feels like:
Tumblr media
BUT SERIOUSLY, these terms aren't only applicable to the near future. When the current players' grandchildren are ruling their kingdoms, and the isles go raiding the Northern kingdom, then...?
13. So that's when Maege Mormont pulls Robb aside and there's another discussion behind the nearest closed door. They come back in looking moderately twitchy. Robb assures Tyrion he and his vassals will arrange their own safeguards against attacks from the isles.
14. Speaking of which! About the Ironborn currently attacking the west? They'll need to withdraw before the North gets any sort of agreement from the Lannisters. And if they want their own independence, they'll need to send a delegation down to KL to negotiate their own terms. Theon says yeah, okay, they'll do that. Tyrion says furthermore, if the isles go on attacking any of the southern provinces, and the North enables them in any way...the North's independence is null and void. Robb agrees, of course they will not enable the isles to raid the mainland. Tyrion continues that it goes without saying (but he's saying it anyway) that if the North/Riverlands attacks the southern kingdom, they will be re-annexed with extreme prejudice. Robb assures him they don't want any more war.
15. By this point, Tyrion's thinking he can actually get on board with splitting the kingdom. It's probably not sustainable past five years into the coming winter, but he's prepared to let them try it. There's still the matter of how much longer he'll be Acting King's Hand. He says to Robb, a treaty won't do them any good if his father rips it up. There's also the risk of Stannis taking over, and if he does, there's no way of knowing if he'll honor the treaty. (Catelyn knows.) The only assurance Tyrion can offer in that area is that if Stannis wins, and he doesn't honor the treaty, then the Starks don't have to pay tribute to the Iron Throne. Yes, they will be expected to make payments, which Tyrion is willing to divide into easily manageable amounts by spreading them over the next 200 years or so. Consider it 1) clean-up fee for their allies attacking the Westerlands, 2) restitution for forcing the Lannisters to divide their army whilst dealing with Stannis, and 3) insurance against Wall collapse. Fair or not, there's no way Tywin will honor the treaty if it doesn't include some sort of recompense. Even there, Tyrion offers an alternative: the Starks summon their army to KL to ally with the Lannisters against Stannis. Catelyn pulls her son aside and tells him: just make the payments. Their family can renegotiate the amounts with the next king or Hand.
16. With that much agreed, here's the procedure. First, the Starks exchange Tyrion's brother for Robb's sister before they leave the city, or there's no treaty. Second, they contact their allies in the west and demand immediate withdrawal. The treaty isn't valid until the invaders are gone. Finally, Tyrion promises to keep his agents searching for Arya, and if she turns up alive, they'll escort her back to Winterfell. HOWEVER: if Tywin honors the treaty, Cersei is likely to demand a hostage, and her demand will be supplied. So, the Starks need to prepare to say goodbye to another family member.
17. There are more prisoners of war on both sides. They'll stay where they are until after the battle. If Stannis wins...then, that'll be one of the less dangerous discussions the Starks will have with him.
18. The prisoner exchange is a joyous event. Sansa can't stop hugging her fam. Tyrion sticks Jaime in a tower cell in Maegor's Holdfast until he promises to hide in the secret tunnels during the battle. To their shock and horror, Cersei agrees with Tyrion that Jaime should sit out the battle after his months of being chained to a wall in Riverrun. Jaime promises to stay out of the fighting, just to make his siblings happy. And then when the battle begins, he disguises himself like a common man-at-arms and he goes out and fights. His presence on the field prevents Ser Mandon Moore from making his murder attempt on Tyrion. WHICH MEANS, Tyrion doesn't take any serious injuries during the battle, he isn't bedridden for days afterward, and his daddy can't railroad him out of the discussion following their victory. Things are getting twitchy between Jaime and Cersei.
19. The Starks send ravens to their allies in the west, followed by messengers in case the ravens don't make it, instructing withdrawal from the territory. Rickard Karstark doesn't like the news, as he still insists on killing Ser Jaime. Robb starts by reminding him of his surviving son Harrion, prisoner of the Lannister army, and follows by promising execution for insubordination. The Ironborn withdraw from the west, just in time for the Starks to get the heck out of Dodge before Stannis sails into Blackwater Bay. They ride back up to Riverrun and hold their breath for a resolution.
20. Tywin isn't exactly "happy" about the independence treaty, but he honors it because the war has already cost them huge amounts of gold, grain harvest, and lives. Tribute payments are welcome news. Cersei demands a hostage from the Starks, as promised. The Starks pause at the Twins on the way back to Winterfell so Robb can marry some giddy young she-weasel as they'd previously agreed. Nobody's head gets sewn onto a direwolf. Harrion Karstark goes home with his dad and Gawen Westerling goes home to the Crag.
21. The Starks roll up to Winterfell with Robb's new bride beside him and Brienne still serving Catelyn. Nobody's invaded or burned the castle. Theon is still their hostage and has all his appendages fully attached. There's the joyous reunion with Bran and Rickon, though Arya's absence is still heavy in the air. It's even more bittersweet when the raven arrives with Cersei's demand of a hostage. They're trying to convince Cersei to accept a sibling of the she-weasel, and Cersei is not having it. She demands one of Robb's family of birth, or she will claim his firstborn child. Just as the family are almost ready to accept they'll have to send Rickon to the Red Keep, Sandor Clegane rides up to the castle gates with Arya. There's another joyful reunion, and after rolling around in a pile of hugs and kisses with her children, Catelyn makes a decision: she will be the hostage. Brienne accompanies her to the Red Keep, where Cat releases her from service. Cersei is satisfied.
Now winter is coming and the North has its independence. It'll stay that way as long as they can keep the Riverlands secure. And as long as Balon Greyjoy behaves himself. And they have enough grain and salt beef to keep their people fed through the winter. And as long as the Wall doesn't crack. Sure, they've got it from there.

The days were long, and the nights were not much better. The camp was largely asleep apart from some men keeping watch and of course your husband. Robb was sat at a table looking over battle plans as the candles flickered, lighting the dim tent. Despite your pleas for him to sleep he was still awake. You rolled over onto your front to watch as he studied the paper, how his jaw line looked in the soft candlelight and how his curls perfectly framed his face. His soft lips were slightly parted though occasionally he would nip the bottom one between his teeth in concentration.
You were perched half up on your arms, your head tilted as you admired your husband who eventually shot you a side way glance, “Are you okay love?” he asked, his eyes flickering back to the page.
“I miss you,”
Robb lifted his head, his eyebrows knitted in confusion, “I’m right here sweetheart,”
You ignored his words as you began to sit up more, “I miss you,” you repeated.
This time Robb turned in his chair to face you, ignoring the battle plans for a moment, “I’m right here love,” he said again but you grinned as you finally had his attention.
Your feet quickly padded across the tent floor to stand behind him, your arms draping over his shoulders and your nose nuzzling into his neck causing the boy to laugh, “I miss you,” you pressed a kiss to the side of his neck.
“I’m right here dove,” Robb giggled, his hands moving to pull you around and into his lap straddling him. “How can you miss me when you have me?” he asked and you pouted, your head falling onto his chest. Robb laughed as he began to stroke your hair, “I’ll be done soon,” he promised, pressing a kiss to your head.
You sighed, pressing yourself closer to your husband, his arms wrapping around you tighter, “I just wish for five minutes where we didn’t have to think about this war,” you whispered. You felt Robbs chest heave as he let out a heavy sigh.
Robbs hands found your face, pulling it out of his chest. His hands held your cheeks as he forced your eyes to meet his, “I miss you too,” Robb confessed, his thumb stroking over your cheek. You looked into his eyes which were swelling with emotion.
For a moment you just wanted to be a husband and wife not a king or queen. You leaned in, pressing your lips against his as you had done a hundred times, but this time was like a race you were desperate to win. Robb’s hands fell from your cheeks to your waist, giving it a gentle squeeze, which caused you to giggle into the kiss. Robb couldn’t stop his own laughter at your giggles.
His lips were curled into a perfect smile as he pressed messy kisses to yours, teeth clashing. Your hands trailed up to his curls, getting lost in the masses, “You have such pretty hair,” you smiled into the kiss.
Robb grinned as he stole another kiss, “Not as pretty as you love,” he praised. “You happy you got my attention now love?” he chuckled.
“Very,” you chirped as you got off his lap.
Robb quickly leapt from his chair, catching up and grabbing you around your waist from behind, “Where do you think you’re going?” His teeth nipped your ear before his lips fell to your neck. You giggled as his nose nuzzled into your skin and his teeth left tiny nips along your neck. “You wanted my attention now you’ve got it,” Robb spun you around to face him, your hands grabbing his shoulders to steady yourself.
His lips returned to your neck trailing kisses to your collar bones. You felt his smile in his kisses and laughed from the feeling. “Robb,” you said as you began to tug on his tunic, “I think you might be overdressed,”
Robb laughed as he pulled back from your skin, his eyes roaming your frame. A thin shift covered your body though did nothing to hide it while he still had his trousers, tunic, and undershirt on. “You think love? Maybe you could help me,” his eyes had the same spark in them they had on your wedding night.
You made quick work of his tunic before turning your attention to his trousers, helping him loosen them and letting him shrug them off. Robb was nothing but gentle with you which is why you let out a small yelp when he pushed you by your shoulders to fall on the bed of furs. “Hey!” you whined as you put on your best angry face.
It did not fool Robb who stood above you laughing, “Sorry sweetheart,” Robb quickly pulled his undershirt over his head, now fully exposed, before he began to crawl over you, “Let me make it up to you,” Robb was now settled above you, his lips falling to press kisses under your jaw as he began to trail them down your body.
You hummed as you pretending to consider his idea but giggled when his hand grazed your thigh, leading a feather light trail up your skin making it tingle at his touch. His hand arrived at your breast which he took into his hand and squeezed. You couldn’t stop the whine that fell from your lips.
His mouth had now reached your breasts, his path interrupted by your shift. “May I?” Robb asked as his fingers trailed the neckline of the fabric. You sat up and allowed him to pull it off your body, a blush flushing your face as his eyes roamed your body, “You’re so perfect,” Robb said before his eyes returned to your face. He laughed when he noticed your shy attempts to avoid his gaze, “We’re married and you’re still so shy,” Robbs finger began to trail around your nipple that hardened more under his touch.
“Shut up,” you giggled, pushing his chest but he didn’t even budge, “You’re so mean to me,”
Robb rolled his eyes and pressed a kiss to your pouted lips, “and you’re so dramatic love,” he teased, his lips falling to capture your other nipple in his mouth. His tongue swirled round the perked bud, and you moaned at the feeling.
His other hand began to pinch and roll your other nipple between his fingers. Your hand reached for his hair, gently running through it before gripping his curls when his teeth began to graze your nipple, a wet patch growing in between your thighs, “Fuck Robb,” you moaned.
He released your nipple from his mouth with a pop, a teasing grin placed on his lips, “Yes love?” he asked.
Your hands gripped his curls tighter, “I need you,”
Robb’s spare hand trailed your body, his fingers leaving goosebumps on your skin, before he began to run up a finger up your folds. You moaned at the sensation as Robb dipped his fingers in, “I love how wet you get for me,” he praised, his lips falling back to kiss your breast as you moaned, “and those pretty sounds you’re making,”
Finally, he slid two fingers into your wet core causing your breath to catch in your throat as he stretched you. He placed sloppy kisses to your breast and neck, leaving hickeys below where he knew your dress would cover. Once your body relaxed, he began to slowly curl his fingers, moving them gently in and out of your soaked cunt.
“You like that?” Robb asked in between leaving love bites to your chest.
you felt your stomach flutter and begin to tense up as he repositioned his hand so his thumb would begin to massage your cunt. “Yes,” you whined, “Please don’t stop,” your eyes fluttered shut as you let the sensations overtake you. His slow pumping and his assault on your chest left you a moaning mess under his touch. When his lips captured your nipple again, sucking gently on the peaked bud, you felt your cunt begin to squeeze around his fingers.
Robb ignored the cramp that began in his hand as he felt your body tense, your walls squeezing him. He tried to muffle the whiny moan that rippled from your mouth with his own lips, groaning into the kiss as your walls squeezed him tighter. The wave washed over you hard as you came crashing down around his fingers.
You whined, lips chasing his, when he removed his from yours. Robb kissed your throat before his eyes fell back on your face. You were breathless beneath him, and he enjoyed every moment, “I want to fuck you so bad,” he confessed.
Your eyelashes batter for a moment before your lips reached up to pull his into a brief but hungry kiss, “Do it then,” you said,
One of Robb’s hands shot to grab your hip, the other grabbing the base of his cock as he began to line up to your entrance that was already prepared for him. He ran his tip up the length of your folds, slowly pushing in and stretching you more than his fingers had. There was a slight burn, but it was softened by his affectionate kisses to your cheeks and forehead.
Robb paused for a moment; his eyes screwed shut as he eased into you. He held himself in place, his eyes opening and looking to you for permission. You pulled his head down to yours, capturing his lips, as you began to grind your hips up into his. As soon as Robb had your permission, he began to roll his hips to fill you deeper, pumping his cock into you at a slow and steady pace while keeping his lips on yours, his tongue exploring your mouth.
You moaned into the kiss as his cock filled you completely. “Faster,” you panted, breaking the kiss.
Robb didn’t need to be told twice as his fingers dug into your hips, biting at your flesh, as he quickened his thrusts which send a wave of moans through your throat. Soft grunts fell from Robbs lips in between compliments and praises the noises you made and how you felt around him.
Robb removed one hand to lean over you, grabbing a pillow to shove under your hips. He gripped your hips, pulling them up slightly, and his cock began to hit new deeper positioning causing a white-hot feeling to spread through your stomach. This time Robb didn’t attempt to conceal your moans. He used one hand to hold himself up, licking the fingers on the other one to rub sloppy circles into your clit.
The feeling in your stomach grew at his touch and your fingers began to claw lines down his strong muscular back and shoulders. Robb sped up more as his peak approached causing you to grip his shoulders for some type of stability. He did his best to hold his own off as he chased yours.
As he felt your walls clench around his cock he almost came on the spot, “Fuck love if you don’t cum I will,” he groaned as his head fell into the crook of your shoulder. The knot had returned to your stomach, and it came undone when he his lips found your neck once again. Robb managed to ride out your peak before spilling inside you, his body heaving as he came. He shuddered as he emptied himself, his body tensing, before almost collapsing on top of you in a sweaty mess.
Robb managed to roll off you, both of you now on your backs staring at the ceiling, “That was amazing,” he panted. You nodded, equally out of breath from it all.
You took his hand into yours, raising it to your lips to kiss the back of it. “I should miss you more often,”

For a girl born into the North, there was nothing you hated more than the cold. Your mother said you had just never grown accustomed to the climate, always insisting on the thickest pelts to cover your bed despite the fact your family had lived through the thickest Winters spanning back generations.
Which is why you swore all twenty of your fingers and toes were damn near ready to fall off when you were forced to sleep outside on the road to King’s Landing. Call it being spoiled by coming from a respectable lord’s family, but had you not had a good reason to be here, you would be long gone and in front of a roaring fire by now on a night like this.
That respectable lord just so happened to be Wyman Manderly. Your house had fallen to near mania the moment the war of the five kings began, and you had fled to Robb and Catelyn Stark with your twin brothers Wylis and Wendel. The Starks and the Manderlys had always been closely allied, and as all Northern houses you had grown closely knit with the great Wolf house.
Which was why when Jaime Lannister appeared in a cage on the Stark encampment, bloodied and dirtier than you’d ever seen the once proud lion, you knew Catelyn Stark was fighting with every tooth and nail to get Sansa and Arya back from the capital.
And who better to send to bargain for the two girls than Brienne of Tarth, the strongest swords woman in Westeros, and Y/N Manderly, daughter of the richest Northern family. Since you already had money of your own and your family was incredibly loyal to the Starks, Catelyn and Robb agreed you were unlikely to be swayed by anything Cersei could offer you and could discuss an offer with the Lannisters like the astute and academic woman you were.
Which is how you got here, on a narrow and freezing road to the capital with Brienne and Jaime Lannister.
“My legs tire, we need to rest soon,” Jaime whinged for the umpteenth time that day as you and Brienne carted him in chains through the rough terrain. Well Brienne held the irons, seeing as she could overpower the man if needs be, while you had little more than a dagger to fend him off.
You shot a look at the tall woman, the two of you mirroring each other with a glare of annoyance at his theatrics. You ignored him, continuing your steady pace onwards. The Lannister man seemed to be unused to people, especially women, not pouring over him with affection and lavishing him with whatever he requested since he began digging his heels into the earth like a lame mule.
“I said we need rest. Do you really think my sister will take kindly to me being returned to her as a cripple?” Jaime complained, yanking against the bonds to get your attention. You wished to disregard him some more until he said: “If I am to be exchanged for the girls and I come home bruised and deformed, what do you think she’ll do to Sansa and Arya?”
You and Brienne halted. You hadn’t quite thought about treating him kindly since it was his forsaken family that had started this war in the first place.
You looked to Brienne for assurance, the Tarth woman giving you a small nod in response. The two of you spun to advance on the man who wore an annoyingly winning smile at the fact he had gotten you both to listen.
“We are stopping until the moment the day breaks, do you hear?” You growled at him, only making his cracked lips draw wider. “And wipe that smirk of your face, there will be no fire tonight,”
Gods be known you were so stupid to have said that. In punishing him you had punished yourself. Brienne didn’t seem to mind the frosty night air as she bundled up under her furs, sleeping soundly as if it were another night in a bed.
“A Northern woman who feels the cold, that’s new,” Jaime snickered from his place behind you. Your body must have been shaking more than you’d hoped. You felt the night air kiss every inch of your skin as the wind whipped even the slightest bit and it sent a vicious shiver through your body.
“Shut up or I’ll maim you, Lannister,” You both knew it was an empty threat, one you’d barely made through without your teeth chattering loudly. It only served to make him chuckle, and you heard him shuffle closer to you.
Drawing your blade, you were quick to raise the sharp tip to prod against the soft of his stomach. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” You seethed.
“Relax. You’re clearly cold, and Cersei would have both your heads if I returned to King’s Landing with the shivering sickness,” Jaime said, attempting to slip an arm around your waist that you swiftly batted away with your arm.
“I’d rather risk your bitch of a sister than be anywhere near you,” You spat, raising the dagger up to his chin, “If you dare touch me in my sleep I’ll send you back to her in pieces, do you understand?”
He raised his hands in defence, rolling back away from you and muttering something foul under his breath. You could tell his confidence was knocked that the Jaime Lannister couldn’t have his way with every woman he came across. Any other woman in Westeros would give an arm and leg to cuddle with him for warmth, any woman but you.
You closed your eyes, the flame of anger enough to ward off the chill for just long enough that you were able to get to sleep on wrath alone.
Your face blazed with similar heat when you awoke to the feeling of strong laughter humming through a set of ribs. You realised very quickly that your face was not pressed into the dirt like it was when you fell asleep last night but instead against someone's clothed spine.
“I thought you said I’d be in pieces by now?” Came a raspy voice, and you shoved yourself upright aghast. Not only were you spooning the damn king’s guard whose very soul you loathed, but in no way could you blame him for it happening seeing as it was him facing away from you.
Your cold body had sought him out for warmth in your sleep.
“Embarrass-”
“That’s ENOUGH, Lannister,”

I find it interesting that GRRM decided that two different times in history, both the Vale and Dorne were kept out of life changing events. First there was the Great spring sickness where only vale and Dorne were kept safe and quarantined while the other kingdoms suffered. And then during the war of five kings, vale and dorne remained neutral while everyone else was fighting someone. Is that meant to be a coincidence or is Martin wanting to make a connection between them?
It's probably done on purpose. The War of the Five Kings was written first, then GRRM went back and added in the Great Spring Sickness because GRRM loves his rule of 3. Either things come in threes or they come in twos with the third time diverging.
Aegon and his sisters, Dany's 3 dragons, 3 Baratheon Kings, 3 Martell siblings, 3 Lannister siblings, 3 Starks who died before and during Robert's Rebellion, etc but there's also
2 Martell-Targaryen marriages (1 successful, 1 disastrous, 1 more potential marriage between Aegon and Arianne that could go either way),
two Starks going south to join a civil war (Ned Stark joining Robert's Rebellion with his side winning, Robb fighting the Lannisters ending with his death, which means the Northern army is going to leave the North for a third and last time this time ending with a Northern victory. I don't think Cregan Stark really counts as Rhaenyra was dead while Ned and Robb went south as the war was ramping up),
and 2 plans by sacrifice a child with royal blood (Edric Storm who escapes, Mance's baby who is hidden and sent away, which means that when they decide to burn Shireen, they'll go through with it)
This tells me that if Dorne and the Vale were spared war and sickness, then the third time must be different. This is why Dorne and the Vale are going to be instrumental in 2 different concurrent wars: the War against the Others and the Dance of Dragons 2.0 between Aegon VI and Daenerys.
Both kingdoms have fresh armies eager for war. The Dornish army will join Aegon VI in TWOW and the Vale army will go to the North for Sansa Stark (who is Aegon's narrative twin. Seriously, go read ADWD and tell me Aegon doesn't follow the same narrative beats as Sansa's ASOS and AFFC chapters. The main difference is that Aegon was hidden as a baby, he has open supporters while Sansa's are still looking for her or waiting for an opportunity to step up -*ahem* Yohn Royce - and he is ahead of her rn because he's invading Westeros while Sansa is still in hiding).

I’m definitely not Stannis n. 1 fan for a moltitudine of reasons, but what I resent him the most is killing Renly (and using Edric’s blood to do it) when he was THIS close to allying himself with Robb.
Not only because I really think Renly was of all the Baratheons the one who’d made the best king but because he and Robb had a great chance of winning the War of the Five Kings with minimal loss in terms of both men and alliances.
And also because think about Renly on the Iron Throne with Loras as his Hand and Robb as King in the North with Theon as either his Hand or as Prince of the Iron Islands BUT Renly legalize gay weddings!

Terrible Fic Idea #51:  A Maiden Dark and Fair, but make it f!Jon Snow/Edmure Tully
Sometimes I have terrible fic ideas. Sometimes terrible fic ideas take hold of me and refuse to let me go. Such is the case with this one, where I had the passing thought I wonder if there's ever been a fic that has the Riverlands be the force behind the Targaryen Restoration? and it turned into: What if Edmure Tully ended up married to female!Jon Snow?
Aka: The Rhaella the River Queen Fic
Just imagine it:
Edmure is a hot-headed, good-hearted flirt. He's not the smartest fish in the barrel, but his heart is in the right place. So when he comes north with Robert Baratheon's party at the start of canon and overhears some of the Lannister soldiers saying crude things about his goodbrother's bastard daughter, Rhaella Stone, he takes them to task. It's done partly to protect the honor of a maiden, partly to protect the honor of his sister's household, but quickly grows out of hand.
By the time the story reaches the ear of the king, Edmure's defense of a maiden's honor has turned into Edmure's defense of his lover's honor. King Robert, always seeking to get into Ned's good graces, orders the Lannister soldiers sent to the Wall and legitimizes Ned's bastard so she can marry her lordling lover.
And so Edmure returns to Riverrun with a Stark bride.
Rhaella herself is too startled by this turn of events to have much opinion of them at first. In the two interactions she had with him before their marriage, she'd found him well-intentioned but ineffectual - and afterwards quickly comes to the realization that she must always be the strongest voice in his ear lest someone with less pure intentions rule him.
Hoster Tully is far from pleased by his only son marrying a jumped-up bastard, but accepts it as fait accompli - that, and he literally dies a month after their arrival. He doesn't have time to plot when his legacy is on the line.
And so Edmure Tully becomes the next Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. It would probably be a disaster if not for Rhaella gently pushing him in more constructive directions while juggling as many duties as she possibly can.
Luckily, Edmure is just self-aware enough to realize he's being handled and has just enough of an ego to want to better himself for her. This is enough to avoid most of his worst blunders in the War of Five Kings, though most still see him as a henpecked fool.
Canon proceeds apace.
Ned Stark is executed, Robb is declared king, and the Red Wedding is avoided by the fact 1) Jaime is being securely held in Riverrun and 2) Robb has no unmarried kin on hand to marry off in his place.
After the Battle of the Blackwater, the Seven Kingdoms hang in an extended state of stalemate until Dany arrives at Dragonstone, with neither the Lannister or Stark forces able to gain an advantage over their enemies.
With Dany's arrival, a Great Council is called at Harrenhal. Rhaella is among the attendees and finds kinship in Dany - kinship which is proved to be real once she's introduced to Dany's dragons and not immediately turned to charcoal.
The Great Council names Dany Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She never marries, but takes Rhaella's oldest child to be her heir. Her reign should prove to be short yet influential, with her heir succeeding her in their late teens/early twenties. This heir should very much not be a floppy fish, but the Westerosi equivalent of Edward III - popular, long-reigning, and pragmatic. Very much like their mother.
Bonuses include: 1) A strange sort of courtly love between Edmure and Rhaella, with Edmure casting himself as her white knight after his actions to defend her honor from the Lannister soldiers and Rhaella somewhat bemusedly indulging him. Edmure should be aware she does not love him at first, but wins her over through his earnestness and willingness to listen to her. Theirs surprises the kingdoms by being a remarkably successful marriage, and after Edmure's death Rhaella wears mourning black for the rest of her life; 2) Caitlyn never quite getting over the fact her stepdaughter has become her goodsister has become the mother of the next ruler. There are occasional flair ups of their dislike, but mostly they ignore each other's existence save for subtle jabs at the other's expense; 3) Rhaella never quite coming to terms with being a Targaryen - despite the dragon, - but finding all the meaning and purpose she might ever have wanted from being Lady Paramount of the Riverlands.
...and that is surprisingly more than I thought I would have, but this idea literally leaped into my brain and would not let me go. As always, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you do anything with it.

What happened to Lady Shella Whent? Was she still alive when Harrenhal was given to Janos Slynt, and later Petyr Baelish? Did Lannister regime formally disinherit her? Did she give any support to Robb, or the Tully's before that? Later, someone (can't remember who) says she died? Was it of old/natural causes or did the Lannisters kill her off?
Not a lot of firm information. Kevan Lannister reports ahead of the battle of the Green Fork that "Lady Whent yielded Harrenhal for want of men to defend it". Lady Whent is also among those aristocrats whom Joffrey summons to do homage to him at the end of AGOT, although this may or may not mean that the Lannister-Baratheon regime in King's Landing knew that Lady Whent was still alive, much less where she was living at the time; indeed, in this same court session Joffrey also grants Harrenhal to Janos Slynt, necessarily dispossessing Shella Whent of her own castle and title (and thereby removing the very reason she would have a feudal responsibility to do homage to the (would-be) Lord of the Seven Kingdoms). Shella is already long gone by the time Arya gets to Harrenhal, as she reports Lady Whent as "fled" (when thinking about how Shella had "used only the lower thirds of two of the five towers, and let the rest go to ruin" during her former existence as Riverrun's bannerman). We get no other sense of Shella Whent through the rest of the series (apart from Donnel Haigh's scornful question to the disguised Sandor as to whether Shella Whent "think[s] she can buy Harrenhal back with a horse"), save when Littlefinger mentions casually that "Lady Whent's died as well, I hear" (though the WOIAF app specifies that her death occurred "not long after the Red Wedding"). Likewise, the only mention we get of any kind of Whent-related service to the Stark-Tully cause during the War of the Five Kings is the presence of Ser Willis Wode, a bannerman to Harrenhal, with Catelyn during her journey through the Vale.
My guess - and this is only a guess - is that following the yielding of Harrenhal to Tywin's forces, Shella Whent left her castle voluntarily - to live with whatever in-laws/cousins she might have still had (interestingly, though, not the Tullys, whose aunt she might have been), to go into exile in Essos, to find a motherhouse or other (supposedly) safe and neutral dwelling to live out her days, or for some other reason we can't know. Shella would already have been old by Westerosi standards by 298/299 AC: if she was the mother of the "fair maid" of Harrenhal (who, by her description, I would guess was probably born no later than the mid to late 260s), and thus probably also the maid's brothers, then Shella was probably at least in her 50s or 60s by the time of the main series - not the oldest any character has ever been, but certainly not young (in a world where, for example, Jaehaerys I the "Old King" died at 69 and Barristan Selmy considers himself old at approximately 63). Even if she did not already suffer from health problems - thanks to age and/or a lifelong dwelling at Harrenhal (which may have negatively affected the healths of her kinswomen Sarya and Wynafrei and her servant Pia) - Shella may have wanted to avoid living as a female prisoner of a Lannister army, perhaps fully aware of what had happened under Tywin's watch during the Sack of King's Landing (and aware that her kinsmen had been closely associated with the Targaryens during Robert's Rebellion, a fact which Shella may have thought would not help her win friends among Tywin's men). I would guess that she died somewhere specific (rather than, say, along the road), given that Littlefinger seems to have heard about her death, but whether that was at a family seat, in a motherhouse, or in a city or town is wildly unclear.
Whatever the specific manner, time, and place of her death, Shella Whent's fate reflects considerable tragedy and tragic irony. She who had ruled over Harrenhal (even if publicly only as consort) during the height of its glory at its great tourney - her fair daughter and her strong sons on display in front of virtually the entire world - ended her days dispossessed and alone, away (perhaps far away) from the only home she had ever known. She who had been looked to by Arya as a possible genteel savior - with Arya dreaming that she "could reveal herself to Lady Whent", whose "knights would escort her home and keep her safe" and who "would even help the crying girl" - herself died as a lone woman, fled from knights and unable to help herself, much less anyone else. She who had been a friend to the Watch could not avail herself of its protection once she had suffered her last reversal of fortune, thanks to her gender. Where Rhaena Targaryen had once looked to Harrenhal as a final resting place from her wanderings, once she had lost her family, friends, and loves, Shella Whent had been forced to wander out into Westeros to an unknown fate once she herself had lost everything.

What if before the events of the first book Ned had betrothed Robb to a daughter of a Northern house (Like say a Mormont, Umber or Glover) and before marching south Robb marries her and they end up conceiving a child during the war of the five kings? What would happen? How would negotiations at the twins change with Robb already married? Would the red wedding still happen? What about the whole Sansa as the key to the north thing? If Robb had a child would she still be that important?
Hi there!
That's difficult to answer because it changes SO MUCH.
(Long-winded speculation.)
In this scenario, a fourteen/fifteen-year-old heir to the lordship Robb (not yet king!) has a dark sense of foreboding and doesn't want to a) be pressured into breaking his betrothal in negotiations or b) leave his crippled brother the only available heir, and makes sure to impregnate his (hopefully older) wife before setting off to pressure the Lannisters into releasing his father and sisters.
Negotiations at the Twins definitely become harder. What does Robb offer Walder now to convince him to rebel against the crown? Arya is part of it, wards and squires are part of it, doubtlessly the hand of his future heir and maybe Rickon's, and whatever other promises Catelyn is free to make.
If Walder declines, their rebellion is unlikely to succeed as it originally did. Without the Whispering Wood, Robb neither has Jaime for a hostage nor a legendary win to inspire his followers, and Riverrun would remain besieged while Tywin's henchmen continue to burn the Riverlands. It's bad. He would likely not be raised to kingship, and either bends the knee or is defeated in battle or retreats North to regroup and plan some form of vengeance.
If Walder accepts, the alliance is more fragile, and Roose Bolton is already plotting against him, Robb likely makes the same mistakes. We don't have a broken betrothal as the pretext for the Freys to break their support and then force the match between Roslin and Edmure, which change or delay Roose's plans to betray and destroy Robb. But all of this could have still happend another way if Robb had blundered elsewhere.
(The only upside here would be if the wife is Alys Karstark because Rickard would have been less inclined to betray his son-in-law with his daughter being queen and thus dependent on Robb's success, though she would have been 14 at marriage. Yikes.)
There is no way of knowing what would have happened with Theon's attack on Winterfell. In the worst case scenario, that newborn dies at Ramsay's hands, or with his mother, depending on the timing. While it would free up Robb for a new alliance, it is unlikely he would consider it an option in his grief. That option disappears if the wife is kept alive, which would be the smart move for his enemies.
This turns everything back to canon levels for Sansa's claim.
If Theon's attack and Ramsay's follow-up do NOT happen as in canon because Robb left a larger force to defend his wife and she made different decisions as Lady of Winterfell/Queen, the entire war changes because the loss of his homebase was a huge gamechanger, triggering botz Cat and Robb to make rash, destabilising decisions.
If the heir AND Bran and Rickon are widely known to be safe and alive, it would make Sansa's claim much less important. The Lannisters might still try to secure it, simply to deprive Robb of the option of a marital alliance through her. That's not counting what Littlefinger himself may plot in his unhealthy fixation.
Another factor would be Robb's will. Would he legitimize his bastard half-brother if he had three living heirs outside Sansa? No.
I surmise: it mostly depends on how Theon's plot changes and the resulting state of the North itself. Either a LOT changes, or nothing all that much.

hi emily, big fan of your ocs and how enthusiastic you are about them. spare some facts abt your lesser known ocs that you don't talk as often (your pick)!!! 🙏
that's so incredibly sweet of you to say i'm 🥺 UMMM...ocs i don't talk about much lemme think
piper is my sdv farmer who marries harvey! she became a mom at 16 and her family pretty much disowned her except her grandpa who gave her the farm in his will and basically apologized for the whole family. it was an amazing new start for her because she was working a dead end job to make ends meet all alone in the city with her son!!
xiomara is my oc for from dusk till dawn (the show) and is the daughter of a well-known cartel boss. in a series of events she's shot and dying when her father holds seth gecko at gunpoint and forces richie to turn her to save her! she's kept captive by her father where he feeds her blood until she "calms down" because she's pissed and angry he'd do this to her. she eventually manages to get free and kills a bunch of her father's goons and her father as well! due to her and richie's weird sire/sired connection along with anyone of kisa's line havin such strong psychic connections she stumbles through the streets of houston until she collapses, soaked in blood, a few streets down from the gecko's warehouse! richie finds her and they have a terrible love/hate relationship because she finds it easy to blame him for what she's become!!
aya is a tokyo ghoul oc back from when i watched like s1! she's a mortician's assistant by day and cam-girl by night who hunts pedos and kills and eats them 🥰 through her mortician's job she provides meat for the ghouls of anteiku. she's outgoing and weird and stabby and traumatized.
gwyn is my bloodborne hunter! she's like the youngest daughter of 14 noble siblings from another city who comes to yharnam in search of blood to give her vitality as she grew up as a very sickly, weak child. yadayadayada she becomes a god and she's evil.
mira is my got oc. she's the head of house slate, a down on its luck house from the north due to her father's whoring and gambling. she was educated by her politically savvy mother and answers the stark's call at the beginning of the war of the five kings. in an effort to raise her house back to better standings, she seduces robb, intent on becoming his queen if he wins his war but she ends up developing feelings for him. She actually believes in him and sees that he would be a good ruler. Mira sees what a dumb move it would be for him to marry her although he offers very, very insistently because of his honor and also his fondness for her but Mira declines and breaks it off with him so he'll marry the Frey girl. The night of his wedding, the plan was still to kill Robb in his marriage bed and the rest of the Starks/allies in attendance including Mira. But a very drunk and heartbroken Robb refused to consumate his marriage and was actually in Mira's room fighting (and almost fucking) when the attack began which results in the two of them escaping.

What if Baelish was a big house but from the North?
I'm going to put House Baelish in the same league as the Umbers, Karstarks and Boltons in the North. They are not a MAJOR house like the Starks but have enough wealth to have their own lands but are banner-men to the Starks. Their house words would be Knowledge is Power.
If this were the case, Petyr would not have been fostered at Riverrun and therefore, would not know Catelyn, Lysa or Edmure. However, he would be a few years younger than Lyanna. I do not think he would be fostered at Winterfell but been there enough to know the family. He would have been too young to fight in Robert's Rebellion but old enough to remember it.
Seeing that he is the heir to House Baelish, he wouldn't have become Master of Coin but his house and lands would be the most probable in the North- something Ned Stark would notice. He also would have more insight to what is occurring in the capitol than one should for living so far North.
He never married and was an only child. He would have a cordiale relationship with Ned and his family but Ned would be far more honorable than Petyr and may not like how he does business. He would also own all the brothels in the North. He would have been in and out of Winterfell from time to time and would know Sansa. I see them playing chess together when he visits. He nurtures her mind in a way her parents do not simply because she is a lady.
Without Petyr in King's Landing to start the War of the Five Kings, Robert's death happens a bit later but is killed because Cersei learned that both Stannis and Jon Arryn knew about her kids being bastards. Petyr, would know all of this but decides not to interview or forewarn- instead steady his profits and men to prepare for war. Making him the most prepared man in the North. Stannis still sends out his letters and Westeros would still hear of Cersei and Jaime's incest. Stannis would declare war but other than Mance Raydar, there would only be two kings- Joffrey and Stannis. Renly would side with his brother.
Ned would fight along Stannis and Petyr's banner-men would be called to serve the North. Petyr would ride out with Ned and Robb, acting like a counsel man much like Roose had done for Robb in the books/show. Petyr would stay loyal to the Starks because he has a soft spot for Sansa and he knows that the Lannisters are tearing themselves apart.
Even though Ned knows Petyr is a bit...shady...he admits that his counsel is wise. They do not send Theon to the Iron Islands because there would be no need. Alliances would be made. Renly would still marry Margaery to bring the Reach into the fold but they would be backing Stannis.
Robb would would be set to marry a Frey girl but still betrays that oath. The Red Wedding happens EXCEPT Petyr learns of it beforehand, from Roose who thinks he is aligned with him. He informs Ned and Robb of the plot, and it is thwarted- turning it on its head and attacking the Freys with their army. The reason he stays loyal is because he has nothing to gain from the massacre.
Since Jon Arryn is alive, the knights of the vale are in play as well. While the Throne holds up a good front, the war comes to an end with Stannis winning- however, he dies in the final battle. Petyr may or may not have hand a hand in that. He knows that Stannis as King would not benefit him or his lands. Renly would more likely still allow him to do as he pleased.
Renly then becomes King with Margaery as his Queen.
When the dust settles and the Starks and Petyr head back the North, Ned feel indebted to him in regards to stopping the Red Wedding. Petyr then asks for Sansa's, who has been at Winterfell this entire time, hand in marriage. Sansa, during this has been reading every letter, making notes and learning. She also has a small crush on Petyr from the time he spent at Winterfell but that only increases once she learned he stopped the Red Wedding.
Eventually, Sansa says she would agree to the marriage. They return to his castle and live out their lives, bowing to Dani when she makes her way across the Narrow Sea.

Robb actually marries a Frey girl. The pair wait to have their wedding night until she's ready. Set where he wins the war of five kings
Robb Stark
The name of my betrothed. It's the only information my father gave me. A marriage for a bridge crossing is how I got swept up into all this. My sister Mary finishes tieing the lases of my wedding dress. Our father has slept with a lot of women and that's what I'm most afraid of. That must husband will be old like him and only care about sleeping with me. When I die he'll get another and make more children without a care. I haven't seen any other life outside of these walls, so it's probably my fate.
The doors of the throne room open for all eyes to face me. Taking in a deep breath I slowly walked down the aisle. At the end of it stands my father and all my other siblings standing in a line. Lady Catelyn Stark and her son, my betrothed. Looking him over I see curly brown-red locks and grey eyes of the Starks. He doesn't seem to be happy about this arrangement either as he draped the Stark cloak over my shoulders. But he isn't old like I thought. Looks to be my age actually.
"In the sight of the seven. I hereby seal these two souls binding them as one for eternity. Look upon one another and say the words." The Septon spoke. Robb's eyes gazed down to mine reciting the words. "I am hers and she is mine. From this day until the end of my days." I hold in a sharp breath saying back. "I am his and he is mine from this day until the end of my days." Slowly his hands cup my face leaning down kissing me gently. I had to admit he was a good kisser causing me to kiss him back for a quick second hearing clapping from the crowd.
The feast was crazy but the Northern bannerman started cheering 'bedding' which makes me stiffen. Robb's hand takes mine squeezing it gently getting to his feet he declared. "There will be no bedding ceremony tonight. Enjoy yourselves for we have beaten the Lannisters who wanted us on our knees!" Before anyone can object he leads me to our chambers closing the door and removing his fur cloak. The only light provided is from the fireplace. Here it comes Y/n. Slowly I start pulling down the straps of my gown prepared to lose my virginity to the King in the North. "Lady Y/n stop." His deep voice makes me stop confused.
"I'm sorry, my lord?" I turned around to face him confused. He's only down to a tunic and trousers slowly he steps up to me. "I won't share your bed. Not until your absolutely sure." Parting my lips in shock I still can't believe him. "My lord it's our duty to-" He rests a finger to my lips cutting me off, locking onto my eyes deeply. "I am king lady Y/n. I can choose to wait for your sake. But please call me Robb." I smile lightly fiddling with my dress nervously. "Robb can, could you kiss me again?" A small smile meets his lips leaning down he gently kissed me. I kissed him back for a few minutes. He's nothing like my father.
Weeks have passed since our wedding night and we still haven't consummated. My father was getting suspicious but I think I'm finally ready. My mother had died during my birth so I wasn't fully prepared. Rumor was the first time there would be a lot of pain. Yet Robb has been gentle slowly getting me used to his touch. Kissing me and cuddling beside me in our bed until I go to sleep before he'll go to his own chambers. Nothing about him showed force or roughness that most women faced in arranged marriage. I was one of the lucky ones. The Stark's are fierce on the outside but gentle on the inside.
"Hey Robb. I've been thinking." I trailed off entering our chambers to see him laying on our fur bed. "Yes, lady wolf. What is on your mind?" I sit on the edge of the bed wearing a tunic and trousers from returning from our horse ride earlier. "I'm ready. To sleep with you." He leans up on his elbow resting a hand to my cheek, searching for uncertainty. "You're sure. I don't want to pressure you my lady." I nod my head leaning over and kissing his lips. He slowly kisses back still holding my face in his hand until he breaks the kiss. "Roob what is it?" I questioned seeing a playful smirk on his lips.
He climbed out of the bed coming to my side. One arm sliding underneath my legs and the other under my arm, I wrapped my arms around his neck giggling. "Robb, what are we doing?" He goes to the open doorway carrying me over the threshold and laying me on the bed, kicking the door closed with his foot. "Doing this properly. My lady wolf deserves this to be loving and fun." He slowly removes his tunic and I feel my cheeks turning red as I admire his chest seeing him smile. He slowly comes to stand in front of me his hands reaching for the bottom of my tunic. "Are you sure about this, Y/n?"
I slowly nod my head wrapping my arms around his neck playing with his curls. "Yeah. Just...be gentle, I've never..." He gently pressed his lips to mine whispering. "I promise. I'd never wish to hurt you my wolf." His hands slowly pulled my shirt off pushing me onto my back on the bed. Robb hovers above me smiling sweetly pressing his lips onto mine. I immediately kissed back feeling his lips trailing my neck causing me to moan when he hits a certain spot.
"My mother spoke once that there will be some pain for you but I promise I'll be as easy as I can." He stopped his actions staring deeply into my eyes. My hands play with the hairs at the nape of his neck lisening closely. Gently pulling his lips down to mine smiling into the kiss I mumbled against his lips. "I love you, Robb Stark." His hands slowly run through my hair deepening the kiss. "And I you, Y/n Frey."
