Doctor Who - Partners in Crime + Excerpts from the script by Russell T. Davies
For the scene where the Doctor and Donna are reunited on either side of soundproof glass and thus have to mime their conversation, the script gave the lines Russell wanted Donna to act out, but he suggested Catherine Tate come up with the motions herself on the day of the shoot, so Catherine improvised her famous mime while filming.

When the Toymaker was recapping the sort of deaths of the Moffat era companions, I realize in hindsight they must have been very careful about how they phrased what happened to Bill, because Tennant could not have said "She survived. Her life was saved by her omnipotent lesbian space oil puddle crush" with a straight face. (Just to be clear I mean that as a compliment to the lesbian puddle. I appreciate plot points that seem earnest and heartfelt in the moment but sound ridiculous when you put them into words. That's what Doctor Who is all about).

until i recently read posts on here about how there is an inherent queerness to the doctor and rose's relationship in how it's unspoken and filled with yearning that i'd never really considered that element, despite knowing for ages that RTD is gay but. man. it's just reframed a lot of the series for me, like the idea that you have this lonely man who's just watched his people die and is self-destructive and misanthropic and traumatised and he can love again and he wants to but it has so many risks.
but especially S3 and how it adds even more weight to the doctor's grieving widower status. how he tells martha that he and rose were together but martha refers to rose as a friend to tallulah; the fact that he can only say they were together once she is gone; how the only other person that both can feel how he feels but also understands the depth of his feelings is jack, a queer man himself. and I've been thinking to myself lately oh, it's ok, the doctor and rose probably accidentally got married on at least one planet or something but also the point is that there was no official title that could convey to people the extent that they meant to each other, that the doctor can really only tell donna that rose was his friend even though it is so wholly inadequate and she comes to see that by the end of the episode (and martha too of course). how people who saw the doctor and rose together assumed they were a couple, like on krop tor, but once there's no more physical evidence of the relationship it becomes more vague (and simultaneously clearer).
anyway something about how christopher eccleston said he based his portrayal of nine on RTD and something about RTD saying that his husband is "in every good man i write now" and how the doctor and ruby seeing each other in the club mimics his first meeting with his husband aka聽the one moment he would use a time machine to go back to hmmm

rtd first era is like
s1: awkward closed-off secretly (not so secretly) silly alien learns to feel things again because of a woman who feels so much and isn't afraid to challenge the silly alien on the importance of these feelings
s2: formerly awkward closed-off secretly (not so secretly) silly alien feels so hard that there's no defense left against an inevitable loss that both alien and woman pretended wasn't going to happen
s3: silly alien now bleeding uncontrollably everywhere, but a doctor comes along and does triage on the wounds. experience deeply traumatises this doctor and her whole family and she has to leave
s4: silly alien now in some tricky equilibrium, tries to balance bleeding heart with living, made easier because of a very special woman who understands on some intimate level the struggle of this balance. things looking up on the whole. but watch out
specials: oh no oh no oh no oh dear

processing. i can't believe they made david tennant even wetter and more pathetic. like that was a sopping wet man. a real scrungle of a guy. it's like if you took all the sadwetpathetic in the world and concentrated it. into one guy. and you thought they did that with ten but noooo it's been fifteen years there are new sadwetpathetic technologies. you can fit more in there

it will always bother me that in the year of our Lord 1963, Susan said she made up the initials for the TARDIS, but that apparently every single other person on her planet and all over the universe for some reason call all of those ships TARDISes. they don鈥檛 have another name for it. Type 40 TARDIS. stole a TARDIS. did Susan name all of them? was Susan there at the conceptualization of the first one? why. why-

I don't think either approach is bad but there's a certain irony in RTD era companions travelling full time with The Doctor but the audience sees their families a lot, but Moffat's companions travel part time but the audience hardly sees their family.
