vanessa in the au being a Marshall in charge of overseeing Mike and Evan's place in the witness protection program; making sure they're both following the rules and aren't taking unnecessary risks, and also trying to make sure they're safe. Both safe from other people and doing okay mental health wise.

This would happen early on in their relationship, but one day Vanessa is asking the boys questions so she can fill out a report to give to her superiors about their case. And the boys, Mike especially, keep making jokes about and in response to her questions at every turn. Vanessa gets more and more frustrated before she finally snaps: this is SERIOUS. I need you to answer questions so I can fill out this report, both ensuring YOUR safety and the security of MY job. Now do you want to try being mature for five seconds?

And Mike goes quiet. He stares at her for a moment before continuing in an icy voice: my and my brother's lives aren't some mundane form for you to fill out. We didn't survive what we went through just so you could quiz us on it like we're taking some god awful survey on the latest experimental Doritos flavor. What happened to us was ugly and painful and fucked up, and if you're going to ask us invasive questions about what we went through and how it's affecting our lives, then you're sure as hell not going to criticize me or my brother for how we cope with what happened to us or with your fucked up questions forcing us to relive it. Do you fucking understand me?

And then it's Vanessa's turn to go quiet. She stares at Mike, shocked. She never thought of it that way before. She didn't realize that she was coming across as so insensitive, or that they were using humor to cope rather than to spite her like she thought.

Vanessa changes. It's the first time in a long time that anyone (in an authority position esp) has changed to respond to Mike's needs or actually listened to Mike, and it helps Mike trust her despite Mike having a hard time with police and authority

my kitten is oh so smart and here are 3 examples

finch put her paw in the kitchen sink and didn't Like It because of the washing up liquid in the water, so she ran straight to her water fountain and put her paw directly under the water flow to rinse it. wtf

she knows the word "trust" and i use it when doing something new and possibly uncomfortable with her, i.e. putting on her collar or harness training, in response she looks up at me and purrs and squints because she Knows i'll help her if she's scared. one time her collar charm got stuck on something and when i ran over to free her she immediately purred and stayed still.

she just observes the rats in their cage and doesn't directly bother them, but when saffron in particular tells her to back off (huffing, territorial behaviour) finch squints and settles a little further back until saffron stops. they speak totally different languages but seem to have an Understanding? it's very endearing
