If Only You Return To Me  |  Mature  |  28,024
Author: arlingtonchamberofgay  |  Artist: sidewinder
The world has been saved, yet again, but this time, Dean is forced to carry on without his best friend. His best friend, who loved him. In true Winchester fashion, Dean decides to shove down and bury his feelings about the last words that Cas said to him and the implications thereof. Instead he buries himself in alcohol, hunting, and stupid ass decisions. After a failed rescue attempt in the Empty, he’s forced to reassess what his life looks like without the angel. Until, one day, a run of the mill hunt goes wrong because of a small bit of rebar.
Castiel somehow awakens in the Empty, much to the Shadow’s ever growing annoyance. After making a deal to return to Earth to find Dean in exchange for his grace, Cas finds himself in the same room he last saw the man. He’s devastated to discover that he’s too late, Dean is dead and in Heaven. Realizing there’s no point to coming back to a world without Dean, Cas goes to Heaven to speak with Jack in hopes of figuring out a way to get back to Dean and actually stay around. Of course, it’s more complicated than they expect.
Dean and Cas are desperate to find their way back to each other, but the universe seems to be working hard to keep them apart.

Peace (A Soft Epilogue)
"Dean," A voice whispers as a warm hand shakes Dean gently by the shoulder.
Dean rises back to consciousness slowly, a recently-acquired skill (a luxury).
Sam's softly-smiling face appears before his bleary eyes. A slow blink brings him into better focus, the laughter lines around Sam’s eyes that are finally starting to overtake the worry wrinkles on his forehead come back into sharp relief. "We're gonna head out," He murmurs.
A glance over his shoulder. Eileen stands by the door, features softened by distance, but ready smile easily visible as she waves and holds up a hand that means 'I love you.'
Dean sends the message back left-handed (he's been practicing with both).
To Sam, he whispers, "You sure you don't wanna crash here? It's dangerous for old folks to drive after dark."
Sam shoots him an annoyed (and fond) look as he tries to hold back a grin. "I'm not the one who couldn't stay awake for my own movie marathon, Jerk."
"Hey," Dean protests (softly). "I ain't old, I'm just in a food coma, Bitch."
Sam stops holding back his grin. "Whatever you say, old timer." He easily dodges Dean's halfhearted swipe, then leans back in to squeeze Dean's shoulder. "Love you."
"Yeah, love you too," Dean huffs, mock-annoyed still (the words come out so easily now, turns out—like signing—they flow better with practice). "Now get out of here."
Sam chuckles as he heads for the door, knowing to lock it behind him as he goes (he and Eileen have keys).
Dean settles back against the warm wall of muscle at his back and squeezes the hand interlaced with his, never more glad that they'd shelled out for the ridiculously large sectional that allows them room to lie sandwiched together (and room for visiting family).
A bean bag chair stands alone against the far wall and Dean feels a bittersweet pang.
Cas stirs and squeezes the arm currently around Dean's waist (which has finally been allowed to grow softer and is currently stuffed full of good food and extra servings of pie). "You alright?" His voice is sleep-rough but somehow lighter than it's been in years.
"Yeah," Dean whispers back, unwilling to break this moment.
"Jack?" Powers or not, Cas has always been able to read Dean's mind.
Dean nods with a sigh.
Another squeeze. "I miss him too." Easy words breathed against the back of Dean's neck, like there could be no other answer, like a lifetime full of 'toughen up' and 'no one cares you're hurting' had been the exception, not the rule.
"He seemed happy, though." Dean thinks how excited Jack was, bouncing excitedly on the video call this afternoon, telling them about his new friends and how he'd been settling back into his dorm after the winter break.
Cas nods. "He'll be home soon, spring is just around the corner."
Dean nods back and nearly drifts off again. His phone pings with a notification at almost the same moment Cas' does.
They untangle themselves, but stay close as they sit up to check their phones.
Dean opens his messages, idly reminding himself to charge his phone tonight. The many birthday wishes from friends and family drained his battery today.
A text from Claire, Happy birthday, Hasselhoff. Brace yourself.
Cas laughs in the glow of his screen, his eyes scrunching up and sending a road map of lines across his temples that Dean would drive for the rest of time.
"Claire?"
Cas nods. "She sent us a 'warning,'" (his air quotes melt Dean's heart just that little bit more, like they always do.) Cas smiles bright. "She and Kaia are crashing at our place tomorrow on their way to Yosemite."
Dean grins back, relishing the thought of family in the guest room again.
He texts back, Bring it on, Barbie, And kindly doesn't mention that they are not even close to 'on the way' to Yosemite from Sioux Falls.
"They actually manage to scrounge up a case?" Dean asks, worry sending tension coiling across his shoulders. Turns out, Chuck lied. The world left behind after his defeat is calmer, with fewer monsters stirred to bloodlust, not more.
Cas shakes his head. "Road trip."
The tension releases, a smile taking its place. Dean sinks back into Cas' side, thoughts drifting to what his past self would think if he could see Dean now.
He always told himself he didn't want to get old, didn't want to deal with those aches and pains, didn't want to get slow. He told himself that living long enough to lose all his friends was really the worst thing. He told himself that going down swinging was the only way to go.
He ignored the pain of broken ribs and bleeding knuckles. He ignored how many friends he'd already lost. He ignored his own desire to live at peace and in safety.
Why hope for things you know you'll never have.
Dean chuckles, causing Cas to raise a questioning brow.
Dean takes a look around the home he’s built here with Cas and then leans in for a lingering kiss, knowing he'll be welcome, knowing he is loved by so many people (his family), no matter what.
He answers, smiling so wide his cheeks ache with it. "Just glad that past me was full of crap."

I just don’t like Violet from Wordgirl. To be honest, I think she’s a bad friend.
I’d like to say: Violet is not a bad character. Some people may find her annoying, but I really don’t! Violet is fudging hilarious, her delivery is perfect and the show wouldn’t be the same without her.
But I don’t think she’s a good friend.
To clarify, this is an opinion! It’s not fact! I think early season Violet is a sweetheart and deteriorated later on. If you disagree? Great! Opinions are awesome!
Also, I know they’re ten haha, so don’t take this too seriously. I hold Violet to much different standards than I would an actual 10-year-old.
Also: I know Becky isn’t perfect! She has her off moments, but I think we see consistent effort from her to be as good a friend as she can.
I think there’s more to this story than just the events of “Rhyme and Reason”, but I think they’re worth acknowledging.
She reacts poorly, getting upset, offended, etc….but she isn’t the only one to go through this.
Scoops finds out about her secret identity as well, and expresses that he’s offended by it- but he does not go through the same guilt-tripping theatrics that Violet does. Yes, Violet and Becky are closer friends than Scoops and Becky, but it’s worth acknowledging.
I’ll elaborate more on Rhyme and Reason later. There’s another episode that I think displays some issues with Violet as a friend.
In “Too Loud Crew”, Becky- after avoiding being truthful- admits that she doesn’t feel comfortable at Violet’s house. Violet immediately takes offense to this- “Well, maybe I don’t feel comfortable at YOUR house!”- storming off, etc.. We see why Becky is uncomfortable at her house (the singing stone and things of the sort), and even while she’s trying to apologize Violet insists that she has to follow the house rules.
In the end, Violet says “just tell me how you feel next time”….and she did! This line wouod be more understandable if she overheard Becky complaining about Violet’s house to someone else, but Becky did tell her how she felt. Yes, this is nitpicky, I realize that…..for me, another example of something that I wouldn’t get mad at if there weren’t so many other things I was made at.
It’s sad, because I don’t think Violet was always a bad friend. Especially in the early Birthday Girl episodes (I.e. The Birthday Girl and Slumber Party Pooper) she seems much more genuine and does much more for Becky’s sake.
Upon watching “Slumper Party Pooper”, (an episode where Violet accidentally tells Eileen about Wordgirl’s slumber party, and she comes to disrupt it) @skwangly-fingers and I joked that if this were a later episode, Violet would be mad that Becky was ruining Eileen’s birthday. Though we were joking, we do think there’s a sharp decline in Violet’s overall “good-friend-ness”.
Something else that rubs me the wrong way is that Violet wins who matter what. I don’t think this in itself makes her a bad person and would be funny to me if it didn’t feel like she always gets whatever she wants.
For example, in “A Vote for Becky” she wins the class election without even running. This is played as a joke, and isn’t really Violet’s fault- but I think how often she gets things she didn’t even ask for has not helped my resentment towards this child.
Art’s Parts is an episode I think is worth mentioning. It displays negative traits from both Becky and Violet….and I think my main issue with it is that the argument of “which is more powerful, art or words?” only ends with Becky realizing art is powerful, not both sides learning to understand each other…..which (this could be incorrect) feels like a theme in the show. Becky always seems to bend to fit Violet’s wants, but barely vice versa.
I think Violet gets much more upset during their argument than necessary, but so does Becky. The argument is here at 2:15 https://youtu.be/clKDbs6XqrQ?si=De4XZwaObUuHJIN8. This scene I felt was important to include.
I just think as the series goes on, she becomes more ignorant to Becky’s feelings.
Now, onto everyone’s talking point: Rhyme and Reason.
I would like to point out that evidence finding out Wordgirl is Becky, Violet seemed to really look up to Wordgirl, at least early on. She makes some less than flattering remarks, but we have to remind ourselves that Violet did not realize she was talking to Wordgirl herself when she said them.
I think Violet’s theatrics when she discovers Becky’s identity don’t paint her in a very flattering light. Yes, I understand that it’s there to build suspense, and I think it’s very good writing! But keeping some of her other behavior in mind, it can really come across like Violet is playing mind games with her.
“All you’ve ever done is lie to me.” I understand that she is emotional, and that could be causing her to say some things she doesn’t truly mean, but this line especially rubs me the wrong way, especially because Violet never apologizes, nor is she ever implied to be in the wrong, when I’d argue that she is for at least some of what she says.
I think it’s the difference between “Have you ever meant anything you’ve said?” and “All you’ve ever done is lie to me.” One is a genuine question born out of emotion, one feels more as though it comes from a place of bitterness.
Again, I think the moment is masterfully written, but I don’t think it’s very flattering to Violet. And again, I don’t think this scene would bother me so much if Violet herself didn’t do so much outside of it to provoke me.
I think Athena P puts her opinions very well. I don’t agree with everything she says, but I think it’s important to include (also, Athena P is one of my favorite YouTubers. Very based. Pog, if you will. Go watch her, she has some spicy takes but is very entertaining and is the person who got me into the show.)
ATHENA P: “So at first I thought Violet infuriated me because she gets everything she wants. She’s dating Scoops- the guy Becky likes-, she was the lead in the school play, she even won class president despite her not even running. But what really threw me over the edge was the Halloween episode where she’s just eating up that everyone thinks she’s Wordgirl……
But what really gets me, the real reason I am beefing with this ten year old, is her entitlement.
In Too Loud Crew, Becky tries expressing to Violet that she just feels uncomfortable in Violet’s house. So instead of Violet hearing out her friend, she immediately jumps to defensiveness. Why don’t you want to come over to my house? Oh, you’re uncomfortable? I always hang out at your house! So Becky, as always, tries to compromise, she goes over to Violet’s house and tries to make herself comfortable until Violet points out that Becky is holding the SINGING stone which means that Becky has to sing her feelings- actually, it was even stupider…”
“I really think that they wrote her to be annoying. So if anyone feels otherwise I’m sorry but this is my video. This leads me to the two-part series finale where Violet realizes that Becky is Wordgirl. This earth-shattering realization leads Violet to say that they can’t be friends anymore and she doubts they were ever friends to begin with- Violet, you are not the first person to realize that Becky is Wordgirl and no one has reacted this mellow-dramatically.
I understand the use of the “I feel lied and deceived” trope, I understand that it builds tension and makes people feel like they weren’t let in on an important part of their important friend’s life. That being said, it’s also just stupid. I’m sorry. I think they dropped the ball in the finale. I don’t think they’re realized it was gonna be a series finale, ‘cause it was a fine season finale.
I also don’t blame Becky for not telling Violet when Violet couldn’t even keep her mouth shut about Becky’s first sleepover to the only person Becky didn’t want to invite! …. My theory is that Violet isn’t used to her friend being the exceptional one.
She’s used to her friend being a word nerd but not THE word nerd. She even says something along the lines of, “but you’re not just Becky! You’re Wordgirl, you’re so much more” which if I were Becky I’d be very insulted by.”
If you have any disagreements or anything you think I should add to this post, please let me know! All I ask is that you’re respectful….I wouldn’t hold real ten-year-olds to the standard I hold Violet to, haha!
Again, this is my opinion, if you like Violet, great! Again, I think she’s charming and funny, I just think she’s not the greatest friend.

"It is fucked up that Bloodborne only has two and a half black people and Yamamura" is one of the most bewildering comments I've ever heard on Bloodborne tbh. Like, it had me genuinely stare into void for six minutes.
It is true that there aren't many people of color in Bloodborne, but Yharnam IS inspired by Victorian times Czechia, so it makes sense majority of characters are white? Still! We have Henryk and Suspicious Beggar, both with very brown skin and implied Loran descent (Loran having strong Egypt vibe too!). Yamamura is Japanese, for sure! We have a Yahar'gul Hunter found in the same underground prison as Yamamura that is a black man, and there are other Yahar'gul hunters who are black/brown that seem to be similar to Henryk's descent. Simon is lighter brown and shares face data with Djura's Apprentice! Djura's Ally is brown. Bestial Hunter has been transformed with.. well, beasthood, but from his face data we can get a hint he used to be a PoC too.
It is not that they're all suddenly "not important" except for three either! Not a fan of "this character doesn't count because no one cares about them uwu" mentality. From the looks of his fate, Yahar'gul Hunter from underground jail was a detractor from Yahar'gul like Antal, and might have helped Yamamura to run! You definitely remember the trio that ambushes you in Yahar'gul, each fighting in a unique way, where did the "they're polycule" takes go all of a sudden? Besides, over half of Yahar'gul hunters use Church weapons, they could have been the victims of starting repressions against foreigners, and unfortunately the ones visually foreign were the most vulnerable. Forced to work with the one guy that accepts EVERYONE as long as they're useful. (Also yes, a potential much more dark explanation for lacking PoC in Yharnam than it being inspired by Middle and Eastern Europe). Djura's friends are certainly important, they stayed by his side, and one of them even continues protecting the beasts after his death! Djura's Ally is even mentioned in Bloodborne's official guide as the one that aids Djura! Bestial Hunter is implied to have been the member (if not owner) of Oto Workshop that was BETA Powder Kegs! Soulsborne characters are often as interesting as the fans WANT them to be!
That's like 12 people of color, not 3! I think the thing we can agree on is absence of women of color. Yurie is a misinterpretation since Zullie datamined her (simply blonde with grey eyes) face data late and her name actually being Julie is not exactly a viral knowledge. With Eileen, she doesn't have face data and voice actors do not bind to any specific interpretation, but even if they did it would not explain why specifically English VA should be crowned as "canon" one. Why not French or German or Italian or Portuguese then? Why not Japanese original, after all? We weren't given female characters of color as far as canon goes, unfortunately, but personally I think Bloodborne is not THAT devoid. You just need to look beyond just the characters who have more evident dialogue and story, Soulsborne games like to tell their stories I silence!

i remember someone say a hc about Eileen and Tom going at Hogwarts at the same time (not in the same year tho) and i got the thought of a possible relationship between not strictly romantic tho, just something that left a mark in both. What do you think?
thank you very much for the ask, @midnight1404!
once i stopped singing "tom and eileen" to the tune of come on, eileen, i decided to settle on the idea of this... partially flopping.
that the two might have been at hogwarts at the same time is completely plausible - although i do prefer the idea of eileen as marrying tobias and having severus when she's very young, since i think it adds something to the sadness of her story for her to end up trapped in such a horrible situation with her whole life stretching before her, which means i tend to imagine her being around fifteen or so years younger than voldemort - but i think that, if they were, eileen would never have been someone who tom paid attention to.
i've said elsewhere that i've never gone in for the fanon that eileen comes from an elite pureblood background [the only person who ever suggests she does is harry, who has absolutely no evidence other than it being something he reckons].
this isn't just because i find the idea that all purebloods are swaggering aristocrats tiresome, but because i think it's more interesting to imagine her as being raised adjacent to a working-class muggle area, having loved tobias since childhood, and then having discovered as an adult that his childhood fascination with her magic turned into resentment and violence as he lost his work and turned to drink.
[and i also actually think that severus snape's canonical relationship to his own social class makes much more sense if we imagine it belonging to a boy who comes from several generations of aspirational-working- or lower-middle-class princes, who wants to both give the middle finger to the inbred toffs who surround him at school and have their social cachet and easy way of moving through the world.]
if we imagine eileen in this vein, then - certainly not as destitute as tom [her copy of advanced potion making was probably new, after all] but still from a background without wealth or influence - then she's going to be someone tom wouldn't give a solitary shit about because he couldn't use her for his own social advancement.
for her part - if she's anything like her son - she'd probably regard the teenage tom as a pretentious, social-climbing dickhead [i'm on the record that - for all severus likes and admires the adult voldemort - he'd loathe the young tom riddle].
but - with this said - she might also have her son's interest in magical invention and experimentation. and, since this desire to push and play with magic is clearly one of the things which leads voldemort to favour severus, why wouldn't he find it equally worthy of his attention in eileen?
i don't think it goes any real distance - eileen's too hung up on tobias; tom doesn't only surround himself with attractive male quidditch players for nefarious reasons - but i think a brief flicker of nostalgia does make its way through lord voldemort's atrophied soul when lucius malfoy informs him that he's found a young half-blood potions genius who's interested in becoming a death eater.

1965 - What a year for Roger!
(In which I invite you to write fic about that time Roger's official girlfriend possibly tried to beat up his unofficial girlfriend. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
January - Roger joins "Johnny Quale and the Reactions". He is fifteen, about two years younger than his band mates. (Source: Queen in Cornwall)
Tumblr media
February - Roger starts dating Eileen Wright after meeting her at a Reaction concert in Falmouth. She recalls their relationship as quite chaste, and him as a "very gentle person" and not "a raunchy bloke". (Source: Queen - The Early Years). It must be true, because Roger remembers that his first proper kiss happened only with the next girl he started dating, Jill. (Source)
Tumblr media
Aww, you might think, that doesn't sound like the ladies' man Roger the fandom knows and loves! Is it all just rumours? Er, well... read on.
March - Johnny Quale and the Reactions come fourth in the Rock and Rhythm championship of Cornwall. Roger is voted Best Musician. (Source) Which I think is actually really impressive for the youngest member of a group and the drummer, at that. Bet he did some impressive singing while drumming.
May - Roger meets Jill Johnson at a concert. She's a singer with a folk band and a year younger than him (which makes her fourteen). "Roger was sitting next to us in the back row and we left together. It was that night, or the next, that he took me to the local funfair [...]. And I believe the next night I went to one of his gigs with him. From then on it was a pretty regular thing." Not an exclusive thing though. "I knew one or two girls that he was involved with. One tried to beat me up at a dance in Falmouth!" (Source: Queen in Cornwall) Wait, did she say Falmouth? :O Eileen?!?
This is pure speculation, I have no idea whether it was Eileen. But if it was, I have a feeling Eileen was not, in fact, aware of any of the other girls. Because whoever tried to beat up Jill probably was under the impression that Roger was very much taken and exclusive with them!
September - Johnny Quale leaves The Reaction after a fight over whether they should play a gig when there is an Elvis film being screened at the same time, as you do. (Source: Queen in Cornwall)
And so, just over half a year after he joins a group where everyone is older than him, Roger pretty much becomes their drummer/lead singer. Picture the ecstatic, cocky grin. Picture it.
October - Roger goes to see The Who in concert. According to Eileen (who is still his girlfriend!? Have they kissed yet? Who knows!) Roger tries to catch Keith's drumsticks and "walked out of the concert on cloud nine". (Source: Queen - The Early Years)
Christmas - The Reaction play at a school dance (source: Queen in Cornwall) and Eileen breaks up with Roger. (Source: Queen - The Early Years)
Tumblr media
Oh dear. Did someone finally tell Eileen about the other one or two girls? Ah, well. Roger doesn't look too broken up about it. (The picture is from the school dance.)

Family Values | Part 3: Family Dinner
Tumblr media
Steve Harrington x Single Mom Reader
Summary: Steve picks up Robin and Lucas from college in time to introduce Y/N to everyone at Friday Family Dinner @ Joyce and Hops.
Warnings: food mentioned, nancy and Jonathan discuss extending their family, falling in love, getting together, meeting the family
Word count: 3.9k
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Nancy and Jonathan had a tradition of drinking their morning coffee together on the porch, they enjoyed the dewy morning air and the chilly breeze that went through town before the sun warmed things up. There wasn’t long until the snow came, November shook the leaves from the trees and forced them to wrap up in more than one blanket. Huddled together on the hanging chair, coffee in hand, they spot the one difference in their view this morning.
Steve's car is still parked next door.
“I can’t believe him,” Nancy shakes her head.
“Really?” Jonathan laughs, “the man ran through all the women in town and then a single mom moves in, what else did you expect?”
“I thought he’d wait longer than 4 days,” she bites back. “He does this, he gets so attached to the idea of a future with someone that he can’t actually fall in love with the real version of them and then it all crumbles.”
“It’s not all his fault,” Jonathan shrugs, “I mean, it’s ours too. If we had’ve just admitted something happened between us that year, you wouldn’t have stayed with him so long and he would’ve moved on easier… now he just thinks about the life he planned with you but applies to everyone else to see if they fit.”
“I never thought about it like that,” Nancy admits, feeling a little bad for how everything played out. “She is the same age as me, I can’t imagine having a kid already?”
“No, but if Steve and Y/N do work out, our future kids would have friends for the rest of their lives,” he smiles. “The Harringtons and the Byers are going to grow up inseparable this time.”
She can’t help but laugh, smiling at all the possibilities, “that would be nice to see.”
“My mom would love to be a grandma,” Jonathan drops a hint that he’s ready.
“You think once Eileen meets Y/N she’ll wanna have another baby too?” Nancy wonders, “cause then all 3 of us could have kids the same age…”
“Really?” Jonathan turns to her with wide eyes full of excitement. “You’d want to have kids now?”
She nods, “yeah, I mean, we’re safe, we have money, Mike's leaving for college soon… we can use Holly's old room for our baby?”
He pulls her into a side hug and kisses the top of her head, “even just trying is going to be fun.”
“We’ve been very good at practice,” she teases, wrapping her arms around his middle and kissing the side of his neck when they’re interrupted.
“Look,” Jonathan points with his chin, redirecting her view to Steve leaving their neighbour's house and heading right toward their own… “here we go.”
He climbs the stairs two at a time, “hello neighbours,” he bows to them, full of a little too much energy.
“I can’t believe you,” Nancy can’t help but laugh. “Did you sleep with her?”
He shakes his head, “no, I just slept beside her until Lisa came in this morning and then she kept me up.”
“And yet you’re this cheery?” Jonathan doesn’t believe that.
“Yep, I was just wondering if you guys had any more coffee?” He purses his lips, rising his brows, “please?”
Nancy smirks, “yeah, I put on some extra when I saw your car still parked out there, it’s in the pot.”
“Thank you,” he basically moans before heading into her house. He’s so used to being there, that he goes right to the mug cupboard and grabs his favourite which just so happened to say world's best mom… it wasn’t wrong according to Dustin.
He fills his mug and adds some sugar, he cups the mug in his hands, holding it to his chest with a sigh before he takes his first sip. It was heavenly, he really, truly woke right up after another few sips, leaning against Nancy’s counter, it was weird being alone after such a lovely night full of cuddles.
He was so used to one-night stands that ended in him waking up alone in his own bed, or finding his clothes and hurrying out a stranger's door. Last night he cuddled with a girl he thought he might grow to really love, he kept a hand on her stomach, and he felt a few kicks too, it was so cool. It made him feel like he was really an adult now, playing mommy and daddy with Y/N came to him so quickly she might as well put his name on the birth certificate when this next baby comes… cause he wasn’t going anywhere.
Except for tonight, he had to go pick Robin and Lucas up from school, they both got into Notre Dame in September, so every Friday he drives 3 hours to pick them up and bring them home. Then every Sunday he drives them back the hour and a half back to Joseph County only to head home alone and sad.
That was all about to change and he couldn’t fucking wait to tell Robin everything! He was practically vibrating with anticipation, he knew she’d love Y/N when she met her, this was the exact woman they’d hypothesized for him and now she was real and she liked him back… Robin was going to freak out.
“What time are you going to be back tonight?” Nancy asked as she came back inside.
“I’m leaving around 3… so like, 7-ish, why?”
“I was just wondering if wanted to invite Y/N and Lisa over to Joyce’s, I told her about them and she said they’re more than welcome to come to Family dinner with the rest of us,” Nancy explained with a sweet smile. “I figured if you didn’t make a move I’d set you up with her, but of course—
“I didn’t make a move,” he laughs. “I actually just got to know her…”
“You seriously didn’t sleep with her?” Nancy just now believes him.
He shakes his head, “I’m being completely serious, we kissed a bit and cuddled on the couch till she fell asleep so I woke her up to move her to bed, make sure the baby stays comfortable and all… Then she asked if I wanted to stay 'cause she hasn’t been that comfortable since she got pregnant, and I couldn’t say no to that… but then it was the best sleep I’ve ever had.”
Nancy’s face softens, “awe, Steve!”
“I know,” he blushes, staring down into his coffee, “it’s silly… she’s been in town a week and I’m ready to give it all to her.”
“When you know, you know,” she shrugs. “I’m still sorry for everything I put you through.”
“Don’t be,” he lets out a sigh and smiles at her. “If it wasn’t for you I don’t think my life would be this full… Dustin only asked for my help because I was already at your front door with flowers, ready to try and win you back and instead I got a family.”
“We are family,” she smiles at him. “And for what it’s worth, Steve, I love you now… as family.”
He puts his coffee mug down and pulls her into a hug only to give her a nuggie, messing up her hair while she laughed and pushed him away. “Love you too, Nance.”
“Whatever,” she was done being affectionate, but she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. “I have a job to get to and my hair looks like this now,” she points up at her face, pretending to be unimpressed. “I’ll see you later tonight?”
“You know it.”
“Drive carefully, precious cargo and all,” she teases, rubbing it in that she will always like Robin a bit more than him.
But he takes Nancy’s absence in the Kitchen as his queue to leave, passing Jonathan in the living room, watching the news, as he did so. “You going to work today?”
He nods, “it doesn’t take me as long to get ready as her.”
“Right,” Steve was still so awkward around Jonathan. “Uh, I’ll see you later, love you man.”
“Oh,” Jonathan was shocked at that, “love you too…”
He gives him a nod and heads out the door, back towards the place his heart now calls home. He walks right in through the side door where the kitchen is, to find Lisa and Y/N helping each other make French toast.
“Steve!” Lisa cheered, “you’re back!”
“What’s going on in here?” He walks up to her and gives her a little hug, “French toast? Yummy!”
“Do you want the first one?” Y/N offers, taking the deliciously cooked bread from the pan and putting it on a plate.
“Can I?” He gasps, “that would be an honour.”
Lisa can’t help but giggle. “Take it!”
“if you insist,” he takes the plate from her mother and opens the cutlery drawer for a knife and fork. “You got any syrup?”
“In the fridge,” Y/N points for him to get it himself, fully affirming that he was at home. This is how things would be from now on.
By the time Lisa and Y/N have their own breakfast, Steve has set the kitchen table with forks and knives, syrup, juice and napkins. He helps Lisa into her high chair while Y/N cuts her French toast into little pieces, it’s all so perfect.
“I’m going up to Joseph county today, do you need anything while I’m up there?” He announces.
Y/N shakes her head, “nope. What are you going there for?”
“My roommate and best friend Robin goes to Notre Dame, I pick her up on Fridays so she can come home for the weekend to be with her girlfriend,” he explains without fear. He didn’t think she’d have a problem with it, and if she did, he’d suck it up and leave.
“Oh that’s sweet,” she swoons. “Other than Nancy and robin, who else in town are you close to?”
He laughs, “uh, everyone? I know the police chief and his wife, Jim Hopper and Joyce, she’s Jonathan from next doors mom, they live in my parent's old house with their other son Will and Hop's daughter Jane, but we all call her El… oh and Max lives with them, she was paralyzed from the waist down in the earthquake and we all take care of her now as a thank you for what she did to save us... Her sister Eileen is married to my neighbour Eddie, who runs the hellfire studios, she should be at the family dinner tonight so you’ll meet her then.”
“Family dinner?”
“Oh sh— darn, oh darn,” he catches himself before Lisa can hear him swear. “I forgot to tell you, every Friday we have family dinner at Joyce’s place, you’ve been invited, Nancy told her all about you both.”
“Oh,” she takes a deep breath, looking nervous. “Is it really okay for me to meet them all now? This early?”
“This early into what?” He pries, a smirk growing on his face.
She tilts her head to the side, knowingly, “Steve…”
He reaches out for her and squeezes it, unable to stop smiling. “It’s not too early, they’re going to love you and Lisa will make a new friend her age there too.”
“A friend?” Lisa zones into the conversation then.
“Remember I told you about Eddie and his daughter? Her name is Hella, she’ll be there tonight,” he can’t wait for them to meet. “I don’t think she knows many other kids her age.”
“We’d love to go,” Y/N agrees with them. “When is it?”
“I’ll give you the address, it starts at 6 but I won’t be there till 7, maybe a little after,” he explains with a big forkful of breakfast in his mouth.
“So I’ll meet Robin, too?” She gets excited about that.
“You’ll love her.”
She’s in his car for maybe 5 minutes when it comes rushing out. “I think I’m in love.”
“You what?” Robin turns in her seat to stare at him, even Lucas has moved in closer from the back seat.
“I met someone,” he repeats. “Her name is Y/N, she came into the shop last weekend, remember? I gave her all the stuff for grilled cheese. She has a daughter, Lisa… and she’s pregnant again.”
“How did you manage that already?” Lucas asks.
“It’s not mine!” Steve laughs, “not that I’d mind if it was, but no. She just moved to Hawkins, she’s the new owner of the Motel 6 and we bonded last night…”
“Ew!”
“No, oh my god! I mean we talked about everything, she said something about how she falls in love with the idea of a future with someone because she was neglected by her parents and I do the same thing and we talked about the lives we want and they match up perfectly… I want kids, she has kids, our jobs are going to mesh together well and— and Lisa likes me. She trusts me, we spent the afternoon together while her mom had a meeting and she is just the best little kid. I love them both.”
“There’s 3 of them, technically,” Robin teases with a smile. “I’m glad you found someone else who gets it, I bet she’s a great mom because of everything she went through.”
“You have no idea,” Steve swoons. “She’s also really excited to meet you.”
“Me?” She places her hand on her heart, “Steve Harrington do you tell all your romantic partners about me?”
He can’t help but laugh. “I kinda have to, if she didn’t like my best friend then I couldn’t be with her… I’m terrified of the day someone asks me to choose between them and you and I have to say no Robins my sister for life.”
“Hopefully you don’t ever have to,” she agrees. She never thought of how their accepting friendship could be such a selling point in his romantic endeavours.
“How was your week?” He moves the conversation back to them. Lucas was practicing every day as basketball season approached, unfazed by midterms coming up while Robin freaked out.
“When you said I should do just a basic English degree cause I spend so much time talking I should have never listened to you. I am neck deep in book reports and essays and phonic tests and—
“And this weekend you’re gonna chill,” he takes a quick look at her. “You’ll have the apartment to yourself tonight and most of tomorrow, go nuts.”
“She’s invited you over again?” Lucas can’t believe it.
He nods, “she said it was the best sleep she’s had since getting pregnant, I somehow made her comfortable and I’m going back just for 8 hours of cuddles interrupted by a toddler at 6am.”
“You’re a legit dad now,” he teases. “We always knew you had it in ya.”
“Thanks,” he smiles to himself. Enjoying the little bit of quiet time. Robin loaded a record into the car stereo and Lucas slipped over against the window with his jacket draped over himself like a blanket.
It was the same every weekend, they caught up, Lucas had and nap and Robin tried to read in the front seat without getting too car sick. It was peaceful, he loved it, no matter how many miles it put on his already beat-up car.
She took Lisa out of her car seat and set her down on the pavement. She straightened out her shirt and fixed her hair, “Best behaviour, okay?”
She nodded, “where’s Steve?”
“He’ll be here soon,” she promises. “But remember you might make a new friend here tonight too.”
“Okay,” she nods along, following her mommy to the front door.
She knocks on the door lightly, Lisa copying her and adding a few extra as they wait for it to be answered. She has no idea what to expect, she just knows there’s going to be a lot of new people to meet there.
“Hello!” A woman answers the door, hair greying and a young chipper smile on her face. “Welcome, you must be Steve’s friend?”
“Girlfriend, yeah,” she corrects her. “I’m Y/N, this is Lisa,” she references down to her little girl who gives a kind wave.
“Come in,” she moves out of the way to let them both in. “I’m Joyce, I’m not sure who else you’ve met yet?”
“Nancy mostly,” she thinks back.
“I heard your neighbours? Thats wonderful,” she’s so cheerful. “We have a movie going in the living room if Lisa wants to head in there and meet Helena?”
“I thought her name was Hella?”
“It’s what we call her,” Joyce explained. “Some people have an issue with it, so I use her full name for new people.”
“Well, she is the daughter of the famous Eddie Munson,” she mumbled.
“What about me?” A man appeared in the doorway, long back hair curled around his face, handsome as ever.
“Oh, hi, sorry,” she puts out her hand to make his acquaintance. “I’m Steve’s girlfriend, Y/N… not sure if he told you about me?”
“Oh we’ve all heard about you,” he pulls her into a hug. “You’re gonna make Steve into a daddy.”
She giggles, “I guess,” she pulls away and rounds her hand over her belly. “If he’s around this much when this one comes, he’s gonna end up calling Steve dad… isn’t he?”
Lisa had wandered further into the living room without her mom, sitting next to the little curly redheaded girl. She gave her a tiny wave, “hi, my friend Steve said you’d be my new friend?”
“Uncle Steve?” She only knows one Steve.
“He’s the pretty one with nice hair from the store?”
Hella nods, “he lives beside me and my mommy and daddy.”
“I live beside Nancy,” she remembers proudly.
“I love aunt Nancy.”
“I don’t have any aunts and uncles,” Lisa shares, feeling a little left out.
“I have so many if you want some?” Hella offers, not knowing her dad was in the doorway swooning.
“She’s so sweet,” Y/N smiles, hand on Eddie’s arm lightly. “She’s never had a friend her age.”
“She’s older than my Hella, she just turned 3 in August.”
“Lisa turned 4 in July,” she shares and moves her hands down to her tummy again. “This one is due in February… you guys thinking about having more?”
“No,” another redhead rounds the counter with concern written all over her face. “Baby factory is closed, we stopped at perfection.”
She nods along with a slight giggle, “she is very cute. Hi, I’m Y/N—”
“Steve’s girlfriend, I’ve heard,” she pulls her into a hug. “I’m Eileen, welcome to the family.”
“Thank you,” she feels so full of love. She pulls away carefully, hand still on Eileen’s back, “I heard you guys own the record shop?”
“We do, and we’re always there if you want to stop by with Lisa sometime?”
“I’m buying the Motel in town so I might need someone to watch her, actually? Do you know any good babysitters in town?”
“Steve,” she smiles.
“Ah,” Y/N rolls her eyes, playfully. “Nancy said he babysat her brothers?”
“She has just the one, mike, he’s the tall, skinny one who dresses like my husband—
“I have met him,” Y/N remembers him opening the door yesterday.
“Then there’s Jonathan, Nancy’s husband, he has a little brother Will, they’re pretty similar you’ll be able to tell,” Eddie explains. “Dustin is the curly, funny one, Max is the 3rd redhead you’ll see zooming around here in her chair in a minute—
“And then Lucas is her boyfriend, he’s with Robin and Steve,” Y/N remembers the rest of them. “And Lucas has a sister, Erika too.”
“Is there anything Steve hasn’t told you about the town?” Eileen asks, both curious, and for good measure.
“I don’t know the little details, but I know you’re all stronger together because of it.”
“Absolutely,” Eddie smiles, pulling Eileen closer and kissing her face a few times. They sway together, still absolutely enamoured with each other after all their years together. It was really nice to see, it made her hopeful for a long and happy life with Steve.
“Do you know when Steve usually gets here?”
“Around 7,” they respond at the same time, similar knowing smirks on their faces. That newfound love glow was radiating off Y/N, they remembered going through it themselves.
“Come on, mama, let’s get you off your feet,” Eileen leads her towards the kitchen, “Eddie’s got the girls.”
“Please don’t be weird,” Steve begged on the walk up to the house, basically chasing Robin into the house as she ran to meet their new friend.
She kicked off her shoes as soon as the door was open, “it’s like you don’t even know me…” she keeps walking, through the living room and into the kitchen. “Hi!”
“Hi!” Y/N gets off the chair she was sitting in and ran over to Robin, meeting her halfway. “I’ve heard so much about you!”
“You’re so much prettier than I expected!” Robin holds her tight and pulls away with her hands soothing down Y/N’s arms. “I mean, he said you were the most beautiful woman in the world when he told me about you and holy crap he was right?”
“Thank you,” she looked bashful, smirking sweetly at her. “I really hope we can get to know each other and be friends? I know how important you are to Steve—
“Honey, you’ve won me over enough with that,” she cut Y/N off. “It’s so nice to meet you.”
She gives robin one more hug, completely forgetting that Steve was also now there and in fact, standing right behind them.
“Steve!!” Lisa sees him in the corner of her eye and runs to him, jumping up into his arms and giving him a big hug.
He held her back tightly, carrying her into the kitchen so he could see Y/N too. “Having fun?”
She nods, “Hella said you can be my uncle too?”
“Oh,” he feels weird about that. “Uh… well, you see, if I’m dating your mom that might actually make me your step-dad one day so calling me uncle Steve wouldn’t be—
“Wouldn’t be right,” Lisa agreed.
“Nope,” he smiled, giving her another hug. “But you can call me whatever you want to.”
“Okay,” she rests her head on his shoulder.
Y/N pulls away from her conversation with Robin to see them together, “hey, cutie…”
“Hi,” Steve blushed.
She walked over and joined their hug, kissing Steve on the mouth right in front of Lisa, who pushed her face away from Steve. “Mommy, ew!”
“Lisa, he’s my boyfriend,” she can’t help but laugh. “Mommy’s can kiss their boyfriends.”
“I am?” Steve was caught up on the word.
She nods, looking at him as if he was a clown for not remembering their night together, “uh, yeah? I would hope so…”
“No, yeah, me too!” He panicked. “I just didn’t think you’d be ready to say it to everyone yet?”
“What part of we want the same everything didn’t you understand?” She whispers, knowing all the eyes behind her are on them. “You want a wife and kids, I want a husband who loves his family, you’re cute, you like me, I trust you, Lisa likes you…”
“Like a fairytale,” Lisa whispers, listening in to everything, “mommy always said one day we’d have a prince charming come to be my dad…”
“Awe,” the room echoes with support for them.
“I kinda don’t care that it’s been a week and only one night beside you… I can’t imagine another night without you,” she admits, feeling crazy but also incredibly right for him.
He kisses her again, breathing her in as she settled against his chest alongside Lisa in his arms. Lisa kissed Steve’s cheek quickly and giggled. Happier than ever with her new family.

to the user that messaged me that doesn’t want to be known, you can ask as anon next time and i can answer that way instead. :)
in part i agree with you!!! - i actually do differ from the fandom on these aspects although im super sympathetic to the conversion therapy and “gender policing sam” readings!!!
///
one, on sam policing dean’s grief and emotions - when he’s teasing, i agree that he’s not doing anything more severe than dean calling sam “samantha” or ragging on his long hair…
when he’s shutting down dean’s emotions, i agree that dean also sometimes encourages stoic resilience from sam. example: in season 12 dean tells sam to basically use his grief around eileen’s death to channel into hunting. “use that.”
so on the whole, i actually agree with you that it’s not a uniquely “sam” issue! both of them have expectations of each other that definitely has a gendered dimension, but i think it’s largely due to hunting itself. since they rely on each other in daily work and for safety during battle, they BOTH demand resilience and toughness of each other
DEAN and Bobby INCLUDED
///
two, sam in season 8 - yeah i don’t ascribe to benny situation being wholly about gender either, so we partially agree here too. i do think this situation has stronger support for this particular reading if you wanna go that way. but i tend to agree with you that it feels more “wrong side of the railroad tracks” situation and yes definitely more analogous to ruby-is-a-bad-influence vibe.
benny saved dean’s life but ruby ALSO saved sam’s life. sam’s reason given to trust ruby was the same reason dean gave to trust benny. ruby had personal motivations, but benny also had motivations that weren’t wholly about dean’s wellbeing (escape hatch, revenge on his maker, even the reliance on him as a source of support/food/blood donation/“dealer”).
sam doesn’t have much reason to trust benny besides dean’s word…which if we take the deleted scene about benny “falling off the wagon”, that beautifully complicates the situation. (they should’ve left it in to underline the moral grayness of it all imho; it better demonstrates the push-pull theme of assuming the best vs assuming the worst)
sam can be unlikeable, but like it or not, he is mistrusting benny the same way dean mistrusted ruby…the way dean didn’t cut amy pond any slack for her ethical mistake. if ruby and amy had been handsome men like crowley and benny, i wonder if they’d have seemed less disposable? i don’t know. i think so.
all in all, i think dean and sam both pivot to black-and-white “hunting code” thinking after heavy losses bc they’re struggling for control in the chaos. dean went into white picket fence escapism post losing sam in season 5, and he went hard into hunting re:amy directly post-losing cas. likewise, sam went hard into escapism with amelia and then hard into hunting after losing dean, cas, and bobby. so the coping goes. it’s not one-to-one but certainly has a parallel dynamic. (cas too! he checked out in season 6 and followed it up with going hard in on dubious heaven trials and the “penance” of angelic civil war).
honestly, i reckon it’s tough tits for dean that his past behavior around “teammates from the wrong side of the railroad tracks” set up sam to echo it in season 8. (sorry, dean!!!! it's true!!!) sam also paralleled dean and bobby’s detox stuff during the season 10 demon dean “drug intervention”. …and that’s just my take on it. I feel like it's text.
if crowley is Other and demon dean represents Alternative Lifestyle… then so does Ruby. which is fine. i personally don’t think demonic sam or moc!dean were shown to have healthy endpoints, so I don't view them as super secret "true selves." but if you view those as false worst-case/fictitious fear-driven endpoints or even flat out “true self” endpoints, i think that is fine. so long as there’s acknowledgment that sam’s behavior isn’t so different from dean’s in earlier seasons.
i think the sam hate gets a little black-and-white sometimes, and i agree it can be frustrating.
yeah, in season 8, dean was idealizing a perfect war companion “who never let him down” to replace his brother, who was a flawed war companion that let him down repeatedly. However, the deleted scene implies benny did indeed “fall off the wagon” and fed on humans. even if it were more like amy pond’s necessity and carefulness, it’s certainly a more ethically gray scenario and likely comparable “failure.”
ergo, while sam was very classist and rigid/assuming the worst about the whole situation, dean represented the other idealist extreme. i’ve said a lot about how i view season 8 as being about extreme delusions of perfection/escapism/easy rules/not being let down, and benny is another example of that theme in action - the implication is that the situation is way more gray than it appears at first.
the implication is that sam was partially right about the situation being dangerous, which is a gorgeous dimension imho. like it or not, we as audience saw benny get tempted to kill dean at one point too, so…to ignore sam’s concerns is somewhat of a fandom idealization of dean and dean’s judgment. (season 8 is all about figments and idealization imho)
So yeah i’m with you here too on some points!
the more interesting part lies in the winchester hypocrisy itself, and that humans aren’t executed as rigidly for their mistakes! it’s about how we naturally emphasize with in-groups, even if that manifests as implicit bias. the human condition.
///
point three, demon dean - you’ll be surprised to find that i agree with you here too. demon dean and crowley are often posited by fandom as dean being his “true self” but the series does not present it that way; it presents crowley as frankly predatory and exploitative. dean’s forgiveness of the situation is more analogous to claire forgiving those that wronged her (cas, even randy, dean).
dean explicitly states to Cas, the person he's most up-front with, that he doesn’t view his demonic stint as a good thing. to cas: “I can’t become that thing again.”
i view demon dean as a predatory manipulation of consent during a vulnerable time, analogous to metatron honing in on post-naomi-tortured cas. to me, the text shows an obvious and egregious manipulation, and with demon dean, the loss of inhibitions is underlined again and again…for example, when dean talks about the “jailbait” on the college campus and the blackout kills. I view the issue with the mark as being more centered on the loss of inhibitions and subsequent loss of free will, not the violence itself. dean verbalized his discomfort with this loss of control. sam doesn’t just make the judgment of dean's control on his own internal moral grounds. he listens to dean about his verbalized loss of control. so does cas, for that matter.
in the early eps, demon dean says he “loves the disease” because one of dean's primary modes is running from pain and disappointment. that’s not a “secret true self” imho - it’s more like a junkie who checks out, more analogous to sam’s addiction than not. or to cas's blissed-out, poetic "checkout" in season 7.
///
as i said above, sam treats hopped up demon dean as dean and bobby treated him — with a forced detox!!!! i am sympathetic to the other reading but to me it doesn’t fully match what i see on screen. (in fact parallel detoxes are shown to be overall helpful, even for characters like crowley!!!)
if sam’s detox of dean is about “dean’s true self,” then sam’s detox is about “sam’s true self.” demon blood intake and the burden of the mark are in parallel: they wear down their markers, eradicating their feelings and inhibitions over time, transforming them into black-eyed demons…
even when they initially wield their dark powers in the name of good.
as for sam hating on crowley… despite our love of crowley, sam is working from what he saw out of crowley ; he’s very reasonable to be concerned and distrustful of him…the same way dean was reasonable to be mistrustful of ruby. crowley had a very fresh history of killing and torturing kevin’s loved ones…it was still in sam’s sight lines.
sam is NOT turning against crowley simply because crowley is “queer coded and sam is therefore homophobic" but bc crowley recently did a lot of really bad shit and showed no remorse. plus, he clearly acted in his own interests at dean’s expense. there’s no controversy whether or not crowley manipulated dean in order to getting rid of abbadon, then preying upon him after his inhibitions were destroyed. that’s text.
now, is crowley that black and white? hell no! like meg and ruby, he was also abused by hell and preyed upon by demons. he is in the process of genuinely rediscovering his humanity!!! i will defend crowley and rowena to the death, btw, but a lot of crowley’s shit gets overlooked in season 10 bc fandom (myself included!) can sometimes prefer a cool metaphor over entertaining that sam’s judgment can at times be reasonably founded (sam’s bad behavior notwithstanding).
crowley and metatron are both presented as ppl who target attack dogs in their moments of weakness to gain positional objectives/power.
(both of them also underestimate those attack dogs and bite off more than they can chew/control!!!! crowley HATED when demon dean became beyond his control; and metatron HATED it when "cas was good at war -> "I didn't think he'd be good at it.")
///
summary / main pts
drug detox - on the whole, i find it a conspicuous blind spot that sam’s choice to do “drug intervention” gets layered with all this symbolic "extra shit "extra" when bobby and dean's “drug intervention” is sometimes viewed as justified/ for sam’s own good.
i view instead that they’re both heavy-handed interventions that are mostly about the wellbeing of the person (demon dean included). that's the rub about caretaking and parenting, after all--it inevitably involves a loss of independence in order to protect that person!!! balancing these two things is hard! that's the whole thing with family! security/firm boundaries vs independance!
anyway, detox/human blood is what created a more rejuvenated/jumpstarted Crowley’s humanity in season 8, after all—it dimmed the fog of his demonic non-feeling. it was a GOOD thing.
both choices of “drugs,” sam’s demon blood and dean’s mark, are shown to result in a loss of inhibitions/free will with subsequent demonic transformation.
side note//thats not to say humans don’t also behave in morally reprehensible ways—just that demon-ness is more “numbing” and and the MOC has a whiff of “loss of free will” about it.
2. ruby and metatron’s bad motivations get more emphasized than characters like crowley. but sam was reasonable not to trust him in context of crowley’s season 8-10 actions/egregious ambitions. crowley’s bad behavior can get virtually ignored despite what he freshly did to mrs tran. sam is working from this incredibly recent history!!!
3. lastly, the danger benny textually posed to dean sometimes gets ignored because he’s a nice guy. that doesn’t erase sam’s prejudice and classism; it does however complicate dean’s idealization…which was rather the point of benny and the meat of most of dean’s season 8 arc imho. dean was dealing with his own flavor of perfectionism/unrealistic expectations to avoid disappointment/getting hurt again.

I’m sure you have all seen this clip of David Bowie talking about the Internet back in 1999 “I think we're actually on the cusp of something exhilarating and terrifying”.
One of the things that is always missing whenever that clip goes viral is the context from which he was speaking.
David Bowie was in the Metaverse before most people were even on the web. Here’s an overview
At the time of the recording ALL of the following was already happening and going on in his life:
BOWIE WORLD (1999)
Created by World’s Inc. in 1999, Bowie World was the first 3D virtual world created by a creative artist on Bowienet. Bowie World allowed users to experience the immersive world of David Bowie, interact with fans from around the world, purchase merchandise and meet with David in avatar form.
The 3D environment was powered by worlds.com technology and featured integrated chat room etc.
See this paper from 1996 ACM interactions, Sept-Oct 1996 journal for more details.
"He would never announce it in advance, but he would get on to the chat board and talk to us. The handle he always called himself by was Sailor," says Mr Carrington.
Tumblr media
In 2016 daily dot went to visit Bowie World and documented their experience. there were people in the world chatting! Still! 17 years later!
// If you’re so included you can read my experience of doing something similar. I toured Active Worlds (launched 1995) in the book Lost Zone. Hiking the Dawn of Metaverse //
Tumblr media
Cyber Song (1999)
The same year 1999, Bowie recorded the worlds first ‘Cyber Song’.
Fans were invited to send in lyrics to help co-write a track, and 80,000 people responded. The song Bowie chose was by a 20-year-old American, about the idea of having a virtual life on the internet.
You can find the song on the album Hours...
"What's Really Happening?"
Grown inside a plastic box Micro thoughts and safety locks Hearts become outdated clocks Tickin' in your mind
youtube
Fans were invited to watch the track being recorded live via a 360-degree interactive webcast!! back in 1999!
The chat logs from that session are still online and archived at bowiewonderworld.com
The chat reads like literally any twitch livestream you’d read today:
*** Now talking in #BowieNetChat
Eileen: hmph - pFuRs: looking glass studios Bonster1: I like the hair especially ;) Eileen: (duh) Mechnic: his hair! *sigh* Eileen: I LOVE his hair.. Bonster1: it's getting really long Bonster1: my husband is jealous Eileen: first time in my LIFE I have actually LIKED the way he wears it LdyofDarkness: if I could be anyone's hair in the world, it would be his William: silly old man
Bowie also showed up
TotalBlamBlam: Is that Davis Bowie? Bonster: (David Bowie) yes I smell great
A potion of that chat in addition to the recording session is taken up with discussion about the (then upcoming) adventure game: The Nomad Soul developed by Quantic Dream and published by Eidos Interactive.
The Nomad Soul (1999)
David Bowie is not only *in* the game and also wrote the soundtrack with Reeves Gabrels from The Cure!
I’ve never played the game but here’s a two line review:
In an alternate reality, all hell is breaking loose. And only one person can stop it - YOU.... sitting at your computer. That's not a witty commentary on video gaming, it's the plot of the game. And that's just the start of this bonkers bonanza.
youtube
Lastly, for completeness I should also mention BowieNet
BowieNet (1998)
From 1998 - 2006, BowieNet wasn’t just David Bowies website with its virtual world, chat rooms, live-streamed concerts etc
It was also the name of his ISP
Tumblr media
Thats right, for 8 years Bowie ran an Internet Service Provider offering high speed and “uncensored” access to the Internet.
The ISP provided every user with 5MB of web space, encouraging them to create and share their own websites. Newcomers were told they’d need at least a 28k, but preferably 56k modem connection – this was demanding at a time when the commercial WWW infrastructure was still in its infancy.
Through his Ultrastar company he negotiated deals to give users access to music services like the Rolling Stone Network, which livestreamed concerts, and Music Boulevard, one of the first companies to offer paid-for downloadable music tracks.
For Bowie, this ISP wasn’t just a new means of marketing his material to the masses, it was the realisation of something he’d always understood about music: that the fan response completes the art.
Anyways, hope his ‘Alien Life Form’ have a little more context.
Bowie was in the Metaverse way before many of us were even on the web!

Day 3: Digital
Jack pops into Sam’s room abruptly, completely engrossed with the Nintendo Switch in his hands. Sam sits up with a yell, prompting Eileen to startle and smack him in the face with a sleepy hand. The kid seems to realize his manners a second too late and shoots a sheepish look at Sam.
“Jack, remember what I said about knocking?” Sam pinches the bridge of his nose, blearily checking the alarm clock on his nightstand to discover it’s 7:00 AM.
Eileen raises her tousled head from where it was soundly buried in her pillow, squinting at Jack and offering him a quickly signed hello before falling right back into the blankets. Sam can’t help the smile that grows on his face despite his exhaustion. They were up late last night scheming… among other things.
“Sorry! I meant to appear in the kitchen, but I was distracted by my game.” Sam wants to be mad, he really does. But Jack is a good one.
“Maybe uh, don’t fly and game at the same time, yeah?”
Jack nods firmly. He gets that from Cas, that same cruciality with which he takes to everything. Something as silly as this is treated with the same consideration that a life or death mission is.
“What made you so distracted anyways?” Sam thinks he might as well catch up with Jack since he’s certainly not catching up on sleep anymore. Eileen on the other hand- Sam absently brushes a stray hair out of his fiance’s face and envies her ability to return to her slumber so readily.
“Oh! Well, I’m playing Animal Crossing. See?” He tilts the screen around to show Sam. “I was just fishing in the game, and I found it very peaceful. Dean and I went fishing once, remember? Anyways, I went to his room first to show him, but he and C- he was sleeping, so I tried to go to the kitchen. But then I ended up here!”
Sam bites the inside of his cheek, knowing fully well that Cas ended up in Dean’s room last night. He wants to tell Jack that his secret is not as much of a secret as he thinks, but he decides to let it slide under the radar. He still wants to let Dean take his time with this one.
For now, he settles for asking Jack more questions about his game until Eileen wakes up again and asks whats for breakfast.
The three of them make their way to the kitchen, Jack chattering away about his adventures for the past few weeks. He’s been making the rounds with Jody, Donna, and the girls as well as Amara and Rowena. When he’s not with them, he’s been doing cool stuff like spending a day under the ocean with a pod of dolphins (he rescued a calf from a fishing net and befriended the group) or bowling with a biker gang in Baton-Rouge (“Terri-May looks scary, Sam, but she actually is very nice”).
Sam doesn’t even pretend he isn’t fascinated by Jack’s adventures. The kid just seems to make friends wherever he goes. He has that effect on people, apparently. And the way he approaches life, all genuine curiosity and an undaunted kind of love for the bizarre, reminds Sam that this is what they fought for.
He lets Eileen take over some of the conversation as he makes pancakes and coffee for them, though he still listens and offers input every now and again. He watches the two sign back and forth in glances while he stirs the batter, mentally rattling off his breakdown of breakfast the whole time.
Pumpkin pancakes for Dean, Jack, and Eileen, and banana pancakes for me and Cas. Coffee, black for Dean and I. Two sugars for Eileen. Honey for Cas. Apple juice for Jack. Bacon for everyone but me, and an extra piece for Eileen. Fruit on the side for all of us.
Like clockwork, Dean and Cas wander into the kitchen as soon as he slides the last pancake onto a plate and spoons some sliced strawberries to the side.
“Mornin’ everybody.” Dean is more free of tension than Sam has seen him in years, loose-limbed and wrapped tightly in his beloved dead guy robe. He won’t think of the implications, but he does leave a mental note of gratitude for Cas, who looks as equally pleased with life this morning as Dean does. Their hands aren’t quite brushing, but it’s a close thing.
Cas spots Jack and makes a quick detour to hug him on his way around the table. Jack reciprocates instantly in an embrace that absolutely no one would mistake for anything other than a son hugging his father. If Sam catches Dean’s fond smile at the two of them, he doesn’t mention it.
“I missed you, Jack.”
“Missed you too.” Jack steps back and addresses Dean, “And I missed you.”
It takes all of two seconds for Dean to break. “Shit, bring it in, kiddo.”
Dean wraps his arms around Jack tight. Sam knows his brother has a complicated history with the kid, but he also knows his brother too well to think he doesn’t love Jack like family. Dean will spend the rest of his life making up for his past mistakes with the boy he considers his own. That determination to make things right is one of Dean’s best qualities.
The thought almost makes Sam forget about the corn maze retribution plan he’s hatching with Eileen.
Almost, but not quite.
He thinks about it some more as he eats his pancakes and enjoys the casual domesticity of their makeshift family, pretending he doesn’t know Cas has a hand on Dean’s thigh beneath the table. Turns over scenarios and logistics in his mind between bites of strawberry, drinks revenge in with his coffee.
Jack’s digital mishap this morning may have given him a wonderful, horrible idea.
Dean, he thinks, enjoy your peace and quiet now, man.

I need an adorable scenario where one day the reader and Severus go hitch-hiking and skinny dipping in the woods . picture something like this : https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1124281494456584795/ & https://www.pinterest.com/pin/703756186337112/ then when it's time to go . They have to walk a slightly long distance back to reader's house and Severus legs get tired so , reader offers him a piggy ride and at first he says no but , then he's like he's okay , fine. when they reach reader's house her and Severus change into some comfortable pajamas and snuggle up on the couch while listening to sweater weather by the neighborhood .
Here it goes, The broken English is impossibly strong today so I apologize in advance. I'll try my best.
***
If someone told Severus he would actually enjoy a day of his summer break, he wouldn't have believed them. But fate had reserved that particular feat for one of his last few days before returning to Hogwarts.
As usual, to avoid being stuck in the same house as Eileen and Tobias, Severus took long walks. Not really to empty his mind, but to fill it with everything else that surrounded him and contemplating on the most various subjects. He wasn't the most talkative type of person, but if someone smiled at him or greeted him with a 'Good morning' or 'Quite hot heh?' he'd smile back, reply or engage briefly in the conversation.
The last days of summer started off crisp and fresh, incredibly hot in the afternoons, and by the time he was heading home he always regretted not having brought a coat.
One of his habits was to head towards the high hilltop that had a particular unperturbed view of the lake and find the warmest spot on the floor that wasn't covered with mud. He'd settle usually on top of some rocks, sprawl himself over them and eat his lunch.
Severus had prepared a sandwich for his lunch that consisted in just two slices of bread with some butter spread thinly in the middle, and a bottle of cold tea. Not that he was fond of butter, but there wasn't really anything else available and it was better than dry hard bread.
"Hi!" he heard someone say behind him. Immediately he jerked his head around to the source of the sound, and relaxed once he saw who it was.
You weren't always there, but on occasion you'd spend a week of your summer holidays with your relatives and meet Severus by the lake. Even though you did not speak much until now, you kept each other company at a reasonable distance. Today, however, you have decided to speak to him.
"Hello." Severus replied, taking another bite of his sandwich and returning his gaze towards the lake.
"May I interest you on a hike?" you asked, still behind him.
Severus sighed, slightly annoyed that his peace was being perturbed, but he looked up at you and studied your face before answering.
"I doubt you will show me anything I haven't seen yet." he said.
"Wanna bet?" you asked
"No, I couldn't pay the debt off." he admonished, sighing and taking a swig of tea, wrapping up his leftover dull bread and pocketing it. He got up, a knee cracked and you giggled. He shot you a look that didn't give room for further giggling on his expense, but when you forced yourself to stop, he smirked.
"May I know your name at least, before you murder me?" he asked, extending his hand. "I'm Severus."
You took his hand and smiled broadly.
"I'm Y/N. Let's go that way. Do you know how to swim?"
"I don't, so my death will be by drowning. I could think of worse ways."
You swatted at his arm and pulled him to keep up with your pace.
"You're not going to die, it would just be way more fun if you knew. We have to go though the old road and descend through the picked fence. The one with the 'Beware of the dog' signs. Do you know where it is?" you asked, crackling a twig and listening to Severus tripping over the same twig behind you.
"I know where it is, but I have never crossed the fence. It is private property."
"It's abandoned. Not private." you said, devilishly.
When you've reached the picked fence, Severus offers to kick the opening further so that you can both crawl underneath a loose board.
You keep descending in small steps, through slippery mud, oily leaves and loose rocks, sweaty brows and heavy rapid breathings in succession. 'Careful here' , 'careful there' until you both finally reach the bank.
The view takes Severus' breath away, he is astonished to be this close to the bank. and he immediately starts taking off his shoes.
You smile at him, from ear to ear and begin doing the same, but taking off more clothing in a speed that Severus can't keep up.
To his shock, as quick as the Hogwarts express, you stormed running madly past him, woo'ing so loud it echoed, and the only thing he could register was the nakedness of you, how your hair bounced and the carelessness and freedom that you must be feeling.
For what felt like forever, he allowed his own smile to broaden and he took his own clothes off, feeling mortified for a moment before removing his underwear.
You were already swimming in the water, dipping, floating, charging up and down, right and left, gasping for air from time to time... and Severus felt encouraged. Swallowing heavily he removed the last bit of clothing and before his courage faltered, he walked towards you, trying to cover his bits lamely with both his hands.
"Get in, if you do it quickly it won't be as cold." you said, motioning him towards you with a waving hand.
"I don't know how to swim, but right now I envy you very much." he said, blushing to the roots, his knees already covered by water. He hissed when the cold water touched his mid section, and he was thankful she was happily swimming and too distracted to have noticed it.
"I'll show you how to not die." you said, appearing suddenly before him from underwater.
Severus yelped but relaxed visibly, feeling rocks beneath his feet, inhaling sharply and dunking fully in the crisp water.
He emerged again, gasping for air and smiling at you.
You tell him that the secret is to always keep your legs batting away, and after some hours of practice, you manage to actually teach him how to not drown in still waters.
Severus was knackered by the time both of you agreed to get out of the water, cold seeping through your bones and the sun starting to disappear.
"I think we should go to my place and warm up a bit. We will get you home afterwards but we're further away from yours than mine. Can you walk?" you asked, seeing that he was struggling to keep his balance to dress his pants.
"Of course I can." Severus said defensively.
Twenty minutes have passed and Severus was starting to get behind.
"It looks like you can't after all, huh?" you teased
"I can, but my legs seem to disagree. It is your fault, with all that leg battering." he pursed his lip in a mocking way, pitching his voice higher to mimic hers. "You have to beat both , have you ever seen anyone swim at all?"
"Shut up you prat. And the answer to that is no, you mustn't have. The best I can offer you is a piggy back."
"You couldn't take my weight." he said
"Yes I can. My brother is twice your size and I've carried him for 500 meters last week"
"Why?" Severus expression was of pure disbelief.
"I lost a bet!" you said, grinning, stealing a chuckle from Severus and presenting your back "Hop on. I'll grab your legs."
Severus eyed you and smiled at your back, not believing that it was actually going to happen. His leg wobbled again, and with a sigh he climbed on. You grabbed his shins and supported him with grace.
"You're so light! Really I could just carry you around everywhere!"
Severus laughed and clicked his tongue, at the same time he kicked you briefly on the side of your thigh.
"Let's see how you trot" he mocked, hugging you for balance.
Both eventually arrived at your place, frozen and trembling, and you deposited Severus effortlessly on the ground. Quickly you turned on the heater and began fumbling in the closet for some clothes.
"We need to warm up a bit before heading towards your house. Dress this sweater, and I know it's a pajama but it's really warm." you extended it to Severus and he took it, pushing it rapidly down his head and his arms. He looked around the room. There was a record player and a collection of vinyl records.
"May I see it?" Severus asked, walking towards the record player.
"Yeah sure, I don't remember if I left any record in it, suit yourself."
Curious to discover what you have been listening to, Severus flicked the player on and placed the needle on top of the record.
"'Cause it's too cold for you here And now, so let me hold Both your hands in the holes of my sweater"
He smiled and sat on the couch, and quickly you joined him, shifting closer and closer, singing along to the song. You rest your head on his shoulder and Severus instinctively surrounds your body with his arm, pushing your head to rest comfortably over his chest. Both of you relax into the warmth and comfort of the couch and of each other.
Finite.

Heyyyy Kam <3
What is YOUR favorite post-series headcanon? (I might need some,, inspiration,,, 👀👀👀)
- dean becomes catatonic after cas’ death. (kinda like buffy in s5) maybe even having dissociative amnesia afterwards. it was so traumatic and sam freaked out because dean was just sitting on the ground, still as a rock.
- him and jack decided to enter his mind to try to “wake him up.” they see the confession scene on loop.
- they don’t rescue cas right away. but dean also doesn’t die from the rusty nail. he’s also too careful in hunts now. he doesn’t want cas’ death to be in vain.
- speaking of hunts, he quit after a year. sam and eileen move out of the bunker but dean stays. there’s a part of him that hopes that cas’ ghost may linger.
- he makes a mixtape for every 5th of the month.
- he writes songs sometimes. something about blue eyes and black hair. something about words unspoken.
- he does get that mechanic job. sometimes he would flinch seeing black tar but dean fucking loves it all the same.
- monsters get eradicated completely. dean walks miracle every morning and tried to get used to the lack of a gun strapped to his body.
- sam goes back to law school in california. eileen resumes her social work practice. they come back to the bunker for the holidays.
- jack doesn’t become god. amara assumes that role and lets jack learn more about the world before reigning over it. it’s actually a pretty good arrangement and she dotes on jack so much.
- claire and kaia go to college. kaia slowly but surely encourages claire to get counselling. it took awhile but she does. claire drops out after second year but resumes counselling.
- one day after a grueling day at the repair shop, claire jokes about dean needing therapy. he just smiles and tells her to get back to work.
- dean does. it’s a slow, difficult process but process nonetheless.
- jack tries to get cas back. he tries and tries and tries. every time he couldn’t, it rained for days and days.
- when he does rescue cas, cas goes straight to heaven. he does what he does best; watching over dean.

Fanfiction about me tag meme!
Tagged by @princeparakeet <3 thanks
How many works do you have on AO3?
26. Sometimes it feels I do nothing else than write fanfictions, but I do. I swear. I play the games I write about. :D
2. What is your AO3 wordcount?
214,891K. An absurd amount of smut and angst. Sorry not sorry.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mostly Sekiro (11 works), but I write about fromsoftware games in general, except Dark Souls (I failed at playing it). Also, Baldur's Gate 3 but it's more a self-indulgence writing about my original characters. And, surprisingly, I also write about Rings of Power.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Hana no Michi — Sekiro/Emma, 171. [my very first english fanfiction and the first about my otp]
An Edge of Despair — Adar/Arondir, 76.
Once Upon a Dream Now a Memory — Cal Kestis/Dagan Gera, 75. [the only star wars fanfiction i sworn to write in my entire life]
Sharp Memories of a Gentle Blade — Sekiro/Emma, Genichiro/Emma, 69.
The Scars Upon his Skin — Adar/Arondir, 43.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always. Even if I take a long time to do, and sometimes I really take a long time, mostly because I'm doing something else. Sorry, by the way. Adult life just sucks, things are always constantly happening.
6. What is the fic you wrote with angstiest ending?
Ah. Could be Genichiro/Emma fic. They are very angst, I love it. But actually I think it is a Lady Maria/Eileen (Bloodborne). Every time I write about them it goes to Maria's tragic ending, so it always leaves a sour taste in the mouth. But also, I'm always writing angts stuff.
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
My newest Sekiro/Emma fic, it's all fluff and tender. But I like to think that Fever Dreams (Genichiro/Emma) also has a veeeery happy ending hehe. If you know, you know.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not on fics. Sekiro's fandom is really chill and I love it to death, it's really peaceful, we're just glad people are making content in the end. But, I've got some about my other pairings, especially Adar/Arondir, but never on my fics.
9. Do you write smut? If so, which kind?
I do, a lot. Of any kind. I see sexual dynamics as a sort of expressions of those characters, so I'll be exploring every trait that fits them in that dynamic. So it can be very sweet or it can be very violent. It really depends on the pairing and the context. For example, I really love to write somnophilia between Emma and Genichiro because it's about control and he is all about control.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest crossover you've ever written?
Not yet, but I plan to write a Kuro and Miquella crossover fanfic when the Elden Ring DLC comes out so I can figure it out what is Miquella's deal. I think they are very similar and would have a nice dynamic to explore.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't believe so. My ships are mostly very unpopular. But if anyone would use a prompt of mine, I wouldn't mind. Even if its something very specific like Memory of Shura.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, I translate my own fics. After all, I'm brazilian and sometimes I write in portuguese and translate to english or write in english and translate it to portuguese.
13. Have you everco-written a fic before?
No, I'm a control freak. I could never.
14. What's you all-time favorite ship?
It got to be Sekiro/Emma. I just loved their dynamic the second I put my eyes on them. It's very subtle and simple, it's implied they have far more story than its shown. They never actually interact romantically, but there's room enough for imagination to run free. I could talkabout them all day long, so I'll just shut up. But, I do also really came to love Genichiro/Emma because of those same reasons.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Gosh, so many! Hm, I have one called "Rebel, Royal Blue" it's Genichiro/Emma inspired by Pride and Prejudice, but it's a long fic, and I've had enough of writing longfics, even so I love that WIP so much, I really want to finish it. At the moment, the main goal is to finish Memory of Shura, I'm taking too damn long.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Hm, angst. And a free mind, which means I write about weird stuff and explore every inch of it without putting effort to make a moral compass and tell "this is wrong don't try this at home". I like to believe I'm good at dialogues, but never had any sort of confirmation, so well.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
At the moment, the language barrier. I feel my writing loses power when I'm not writing in my native language and sometimes it can be very tricky or messy.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
It's my current 24/7 job. The hardest part is context, like making a joke you thought in your native language work in your second.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Naruto. Kakashi and Yamato. Been there, done that.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
It's A moment of pain, a memory suspended in time. Again, Sekiro/Emma. I loved writing and suffering every inch of its angst and violence. But gosh, who would I be if I didn't say I'm really proud of Memory of Shura? It's the union of my favorite things in the world: Sekiro and Guillermo del Toro. It's very ambitious and very hard, I've putting a lot of effort in it and I'm in love with it.

Headcanons on.... being justified? sorta
I threw a couple of headcanons in a salad so I could rate the Soulsborne men that messed with the things not meant for humans and got ridiculously big body count, from most justified to least
#5 Laurence - He genuinely cared for betterment of humankind, even if that meant great sacrifices and risks, although he took things to such a far point that these actions on themselves destroyed his humanity and defeated the purpose. He is a tragic villain! Good intentions road to hell all that.
(I will note though, I feel like BB was a bit TOO subtle on how things sucked so Laurence would have the need to change them - there are multiple evidences that are yet so scattered that on superficial level it can look as though everything was awesome and perfect and Laurence simply ruined everything! I really don't see it, especially considering how many things could've been wrong in Victorian era... Eileen, for one, arrives from plague-ridden place if her mask is of any indication.)
#4 Aldrich - He lives in the world that is rotting and doomed no matter what you do, he saw the only thing that offered at least some hope for escape and better era and seized it, no matter what it took. He is like.. in a position where moral principles are losing their effect, so everything goes. Similar insight to Rykard's, actually. (I can honestly give him a pass on enjoying his methods a bit too much like sadistic shit that he is, because how you he is feeling besides the point in this context)
#3 Micolash - His world likewise got fucked but what Micolash did was not simply going 'fuck this shit I'm out' and giving up on human values, but also provoking the process that accelerates the humanity's ruin and it can not even escape beasthood WHILE his ritual is ongoing, all so he (and anyone who """understands""") could evolve past human mind. Micolash has more choice and more hope than DS cast, he decided human values (and lives) were not really worth it!
#2 Allant - Not only he gave up on humanity and this world in his despair, but also ensured that everyone else feels this way too deep down and no one's lives matter, so he had to "open their eyes" lol. He is just willing to destroy everything through the same logic in which I used to agree with Frenzied Flame ending - that existence is fundamentally broken, as a concept.. And like, if other people still want to exist regardless of suffering, decay and existential loneliness? Well they're just "dumb" or something.... Very selfish stuff.
#1 Shabriri - The fucker thought the world had it too good and just could not live in peace knowing there was all-destroying power sealed, he saw "No tresspassing" sign and was not able to stop, so now even without Lord of Frenzy, the world still got inflicted with irreversible sickness that someone could get just by fucking being too sad or something. Basically I think he did not face crushing depression and dread that simply 'resonated' with the power of universal despair, but just, like they say, "did a little trolling". Partially I think that because of how his yearning for chaos sounds like manic wish to just see everything burn and not like despair. Partially because I feel like at least one time everything could be ruined by simple curiosity and not sympathetic motivation? But yes, Shabriri is THE worst.
_________________
Also there are complications of 'they unleashed it' vs 'the force beyond humanity called them and of course a human would not be able to resist' with some, which I tend to just write off with the "the call means nothing without the receiver" (so, even if you like saw a dream or found frenzied fingerprints, you could still just say no... so yeah, I did not use this factor in rating)

Dean lightly nods his head in time with the familiar chords of the song that just started playing on the old radio they found at a yard sale. He moves the pile roller back and forth on the front wall of their new bedroom, coating the surface with the dover white paint they chose together last week.
"Almost Heaven..." He sings along, making sure the sigils they painted on the walls for protection are well-hidden, he had never seen the majority of them and some of them are a combination of a couple of sigils designed by Castiel, like the one he is covering now, the same one Castiel drew for him and that he now has tattooed on his back, right between his shoulder blades, "...West Virginia, blue ridge mounta-"
"I have been to West Virginia." That actually makes Dean come to a halt, both in his singing and in his painting.
"I've been there too?" It kinda comes out as a question, born from his confusion at Cas' random comment.
"It's nothing like Heaven, not even an 'almost'." Dean looks at him, he is frowning at the part of the wall he is painting, they started painting from opposite sides of the wall so he is all the way across the room. Dean stares, making sure he is not being a victim of Castiel's weird sense of humor, but he looks serious like a heart attack.
"No, I don't suppose it is." Dean goes back to painting too, because he would love for this to be done before dinner time rolls around, he huffs, he refuses to have another argument on the lines of "Dean there isn't a stairway to Heaven, souls just appear there" or "is that house really in New Orleans?". He shakes his head, "it's just a song, Cas, he is just comparing a place he considers home to this idea of Heaven as a beautiful and peaceful place, one that isn't full of feathery assholes."
Castiel hums thoughtfully at that, then "is there somewhere that you would describe in such terms?"
That makes Dean stop again, now in thought. Home, he thinks, a place he can call home. He thinks of the Impala, or the bunker, he thinks of this apartment. No, maybe he wouldn't write songs about them. Home, he thinks, and all he sees is blue eyes deep like an ocean he is ready to drown in, they look at him, lovingly but also like they are done with him because he just told one of his unfunny jokes. He feels gentle lips on his and warm hands cradling his face, strong arms wrapped around him. He hears laughter and long talks, he sees his brother and Cas lost in one of their nerdy conversations and he sees Eileen rolling her eyes amused. He sees the myriad of faces he has lost over the years, still alive in his memories and heart.
"No, I don't think there is, it has never been about the where for me, " he shrugs. It's always been about the with whom. Castiel only nods in understanding and they get back to work.
"I like that part," he says out of a sudden, "it makes sense because roads do take you where you want to go." Dean feels the need to hit his head against the wall. But he can because he will get paint on himself, more than he already has anyway. He looks at Cas once more and now, with the glint in his eyes and the light upwards curve of the corner of his lips, Dean knows he is joking.
Dean doesn't say anything he simply uses his paint roller to attack Cas, leaving a stroke of paint all over his back, it's too hot, they weren't going to bother with more clothes than necessary, "get back to work, sweetheart." Castiel does go back to work, not without attacking Dean back with his own roller first though.

Hello! Thank you for everything you do it’s been a blast reading thru the things in the master list. I was wondering if you had any fics about outsider POVs on the characters of YOI? Like if they go to university and their friends just don’t notice that they’re famous figure skaters, or their neighbours are like huh what’s up with that well dressed couple with the weird pet names and the angry blond teen. Really anything with outsider POVs is fine !! Thank you !!
Hello, nonnie! If you go through the ao3 tag (or search within results) Skygem retirement AU, you'll find lots of fics with a similar premise as your request. Here are the ones I rec, both in the context of retirement AU and ousider POV in general:
"Unfairly Beautiful Japanese Boy" by @diedraechin [T, 4K]
Sofia was sure of a few things in her life, two of those things were:
1) Even though the dog was cute, she was sure the owner was taking advantage of her abuela's kind heart
2) The 'Unfairly Beautiful Japanese Boy' she kept seeing on campus had to be an angel because look at him.
Only one of them was true.
An Introspection of Life and Love by awesomecookies [Not rated, 16K]
Alice really didn't expect to ride a bullet train to some sea side village when she accepted her editor's advice. But she needed space. She needed a place to think. And maybe Hasetsu was just the right place.
and a look that could just hypnotize by @forestealites [G, 4K]
They say that a demon stole away Victor Nikiforov.
Misha, Petro, and Sonya of the Novice group try to figure out the mystery that is Yuuri Katsuki. It goes about as well as you'd expect.
And the answer is... by nessiesaur [G, 2K]
Yuuri Katsuki is adorable, but also one of the most mature people in their class. Yuuri Katsuki is in her study group, which definitely saved her ass on the midterm. Yuuri Katsuki is…wait, who is he!?
Clippings by @radialarch [G, 3K]
Four seasons, four articles — and one future.
five theories about victor "my husband" nikiforov (+ one fact) by @dadvans [Not Rated, 2K]
No one knows the truth about the strange, well-paying man who comes into the bar three times a week and only talks about his husband. But everyone has their theories.
icebreaker by @codenamecesare [G, 6K]
Yuuri's husband is possibly not as oblivious as he seems, because he grins and asks, "Have you never looked up Yuuri?"
"There's a porn actress with the same name who went into politics," says Nate, "so she's most of the results, and some stuff about figure skating."
"Some stuff about figure skating," Victor says ruefully to Yuuri.
Jason's Master Plan (to dating the Cute Asian Guy) by Qwertzu [T, 10K]
Jason Hesling, young ice hockey prodigy, rising star of Detroit Ice Tigers and part-time model, had a smile that made women and men alike weak at their knees. It’s been a while since anyone managed to catch his attention – until he met the Cute Asian Guy at Detroit Ice Castle and decided to become his next boyfriend.
Meanwhile, the actual Ice Tiger™ is having the time of his life watching the pretentious JJ-wannabe trying to charm the pants off the completely oblivious, happily married Katsudon.
katsuki_fc wrote by @tetsurashian [G, 13K]
Just because Yuuri isn't big on social media, doesn't mean his fans aren't.
My fun fact is: by stillmadaboutpetra [G, 6K]

Eileen nods. “Yeah.”
