Binker Golding Interview: Youth and the Wild
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
“I’m just not that interested in fitting in.”
It’s a statement that certainly rings true for Binker Golding’s second solo album Dream Like A Dogwood Wild Boy, out Friday via Gearbox Records. Up until this point, you could pinpoint the tenor saxophonist, composer, and one half of excellent duo Binker & Moses as part of an ever-burgeoning British jazz scene, one that has seen the likes of Sons of Kemet, Nubya Garcia, and Zara McFarlane receive global reach and acclaim. Press play on Dream, however, and you hear an unfamiliar sound, at least for Golding: bluesy slide guitar, then drums, piano, and double bass, all before his saxophone enters. It sounds like the instrumental to a classic rock song, still embedded in a jazz tradition, but threatening to bridge the gap.
Sure, in a few years and probably many albums later, we’ll look back on Dream Like A Dogwood Wild Boy as Golding’s “heartland jazz Americana” record, one where influences of John Mellencamp and Skip James rubbed elbows with the current cream of the crop of UK jazz heavyweights like drummer Sam Jones, bassist Daniel Casimir, and pianist Sarah Tandy. The genre-hopping is certainly thrilling, on moments like Golding’s saxophone taking a lead vocal against Billy Adamson’s twangy guitar lines on “Love Me Like A Woman”, or the rock harmonies of guitar, piano, and saxophone on album closer “All Out Of Fairy Tales”. But the idea that Golding isn’t concerned with fitting in is especially illuminating when listening to the album, which was born out an intense period of self-reflection for Golding. He had lost both his biological father and stepfather. He was looking at the characteristics he had inherited from his dad, good and bad. He was looking at himself as a man. If jazz as a genre is one inherently collaborative and outward-looking and listening, Golding’s second album--though displaying mighty band chemistry--is a bit of a thematic outlier. It’s instrumental, but you can hear the way it communicates the contrasts between the expanse of the music and middle American landscapes and the inner depth of Golding’s thoughts.
I asked Golding some questions about Dream Like A Dogwood Wild Boy over email, including its influences, communicating lyrical themes instrumentally, and playing live. Read our conversation below.
Since I Left You: Why did you decide on a blues, heartland rock, Americana-influenced aesthetic for your second album?
Binker Golding: The music is just another part of who I am. It’s an honest reflection of how I felt at the time. I think people often think that you’re hopping genres or being influenced by something new that you’ve come across, but it just wasn’t the case for this record. The music was right there on the surface for me. I’ve always felt deeply attached to those styles, and over the course of my life, I’ve become them. I suppose it surprises people, given the current climate of British jazz, but I’m just not that interested in fitting in.
SILY: The first single and opening track "(Take Me To The) Wide Open Lows" opens with bluesy slide guitar riffing. Was it important for you to open with a specific sound so different from what you had presented before?
BG: Yes, I’d say so. It’s usually a good idea to make a big statement on the first track of a record, to draw the listener in and let them know what sort of world the album inhabits. In a way, the first track is an overture for the rest of the album. I felt “Wide Open Lows” was probably the most representative of the sound of the album, so it made it as the first track. I don’t think it would’ve worked anywhere else on the record. I wanted the guitar solo that opens the track to be unusually long. I wanted a sprawling track that was evocative of the sort of landscapes I was thinking of. I’m also against the contemporary idea that a piece of music has to get straight to the central part as quickly as possible. Intros are currently at their most short in the history of popular music. I think this is a travesty.
SILY: Like you've said, it's hard to explicitly explore concepts like masculinity, humanity, love, and sex on an instrumental album. At times, however, I feel like certain instruments--whether your saxophone or electric guitar or even drums--take the lead the way a vocal would. Did you notice that? Was that intentional?
BG: There was definitely a lyrical intention to the way I wrote the melodies and to the way I directed the band, in particular the soloists, Billy Adamson on guitar and Sarah Tandy on piano. The solos the three of us played were as free as ever, but we were deliberately trying to play the songs in a lyrical fashion. For most of the songs, I wanted people to hear them and say, “There should be words to this,” or, “I can hear lyrics to this.” I wanted to invite the listener into making up their own lyrics to the songs.
SILY: What's the inspiration behind the title "My Two Dads"?
BG: Literally, my biological father and my stepfather, both of whom died in 2020. I wasn’t looking to pay tribute to them in any way, and I don’t like to think of it as a tribute as such. I often write pieces and get halfway through and start to think to myself, “This is about this person,” or, “This is about this time,” etc. The piece is less about the memory of them and more about the feeling of the loss of them. I realized I had no more male father figures in my life, and there was a profundity to that. I also had three friends who were going through the exact same thing at the exact same time. All of them were males, and the loss of our fathers were a big talking point for us.
SILY: Were you at all inspired by British folk and folk-rock on this record?
BG: Not so much British folk, but certainly American and Canadian folk-rock. Mainly Neil Young, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, [and] Tracy Chapman, and then hugely by heartland rock musicians, mainly Springsteen and John Mellencamp. I listen to a lot of old American folk music also. The Delta Blues artists like Skip James and Mississippi Fred McDowell are very important to me. I listen to a lot of the traditional Appalachian music also.
SILY: What's the inspiration behind the album title?
BG: Dogwood is a tiny town in Kentucky. It’s very remote. It’s somewhere I imagined I’d like to go to and just be alone, have no worries or cares, at least for a short time. Youth and the wild go hand in hand with that idea. I like instructional titles. If they’re good, they help the listener get into the music. I take great consideration over them.
Tumblr media
SILY: What's the story behind the album art?
BG: The album is another portrait of me in one way or another. My first album was, too, but this one was a bit more complex. The cover is very loosely based on the painting Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich. The important thing about the painting and cover of the album is the fact that the face is hidden, and as a result, you can’t tell what expression the subject has on. I wanted it to be ambiguous. The back cover is just a shot of my hands. The inside has pictures of my face, but the expression is completely blank, which is deliberate. I wanted the listener to decide what mood the album is based in, in a similar fashion to the Mona Lisa. The wanderer above the sea fog is slightly triumphant in the sense that it symbolizes the conquest of nature. Something has been won. I wanted the cover to be the opposite. I’m not on a mountain top. The ground is completely flat, and there’s no crop left. Instead, there are weeds growing where the crop once was. I didn’t want it to be negative, just subtle and ambiguous.
SILY: Are you playing this record live? If so, how are you adapting it to a performance?
BG: Yes, we’ve been playing it very faithfully live. It’s not too hard to adapt, minus some of the guitar parts. We play the songs in the exact order that they appear on the record. I don’t really think they work any other way. We also don’t play any of the songs from the previous album, as I don’t think they blend very well, except for “You, That Place, That Time”.
SILY: What's next for you?
BG: I’m currently writing a follow up to this album. When one’s done, I just start another one. I’ve not found a better way to live my life. I’m happy living like that.
SILY: Anything you've been listening to, watching, or reading lately that's inspired you?
BG: I seldom draw inspiration from external sources, which people often find odd to hear. I read regularly and watch films often, but as I say, they don’t often feed back into my work except for in a technical aspect. I suppose people that tell stories about people are ultimately the thing that’s inspired me most in the last 5 or so years. For example, the filmmaker Ingmar Bergman: I’d like to one day make an album that serves the same purpose as one of his films. I’m interested in telling stories about people through music.

#OTD in 1778 – Robert Emmet, one of Ireland’s most famous revolutionaries, is born in Dublin.
O! BREATHE not his name! let it sleep in the shade, Where cold and unhonoured his relics are laid; Sad, silent, and dark be the tears that we shed, As the night dew that falls on the grave o’er his head. But the night dew that falls, though in silence it weeps, Shall brighten with verdure the grave where he sleeps; And the tear that we shed, though in secret it rolls, Shall long keep his memory…

Madam C.J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove to former slaves, Owen and Minerva Breedlove in Delta, Louisiana on December 23, 1867. Breedlove became an orphan at age seven when her parents died. Three years later, ten-year-old Sarah and her sister moved across to river to Vicksburg, Mississippi to work as maids. By her fourteenth birthday, Sarah married Moses McWilliams of Vicksburg and three years later gave birth to her only daughter Lelia (who later changed her name to A’Lelia). Breedlove became a widow in 1887. She and her daughter moved to St. Louis to join her older brothers who were barbers. While in St. Louis she found work as a washer woman earning $1.50 per day. She also married her second husband, John Davis, in 1894. The marriage lasted nine years.
In 1905, Breedlove moved to Denver, Colorado where she sold hair care products for St. Louis businesswoman Annie Pope-Turnbo. It was in Denver that she married her third husband, newspaper sales agent Charles Joseph Walker. She also decided in Denver to found a business to manufacture and market her own hair treatment formula which she called Wonderful Hair Grower. Breedlove adopted a new professional name, Madam C.J. Walker, which she retained after her divorce from Charles Walker in 1912 and began to offer her products for sale through door-to-door agents called Madam C.J. Walker Hair Culturists. Walker also set up a training school for her sales personnel.
As the business expanded Walker relocated her operations to Indianapolis, then the largest inland shipping hub in the nation, to establish a factory for her line of beauty products. She also created a chain of beauty parlors in major cities in the United States, South America, and the Caribbean. Breedlove also set up a training school for beauticians in Pittsburgh and began to advertise and sell products by mail order.
By 1915, Madam C. J. Walker was by far the wealthiest African American woman in the nation. Walker was now invited to major gatherings of black leaders and shared the platform with notables such as Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. Her personal triumph inspired other women and she was often invited to lecture on business and politics. During World War I the federal government enlisted her to persuade African Americans to support the war effort and to buy war bonds even as it placed her on a list of “Negro subversives” because of her advocacy on behalf of black soldiers who faced racial discrimination. Walker also spoke out on the social conditions affecting African Americans and devoted particular attention and money to the campaign to make lynching a federal crime. Walker also donated money and time to the NAACP, the National Association of Colored Women, the YMCA, and the YWCA and provided the largest contribution for saving the home of Frederick Douglass in Washington, D.C.
Madam C.J. Walker also lived lavishly in a country estate she called Villa Lewaro overlooking the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. Her neighbors included Jay Gould and John D. Rockefeller. The home at Villa Lewaro, designed by the black architect, Vertner Woodson Tandy, also served as a conference center for summits of black leaders. On May 25, 1919, fifty-one-year-old Walker died at Villa Lewaro.

21, 25, and uh, the snippet one whose number i just forgot. 29?
21. Have you ever deleted an entire scene after spending hours laboring over it? If so, why?
Oh God, yeah, multiple times this year alone. I think the reason it takes so long is often the same reason that I end up having to cut it, which is that I like the idea or maybe even the execution, but it will simply NEVER get me to where I need to go in the story. Like, it's just that thing of being stalled out in a scene and looking for the problem five paragraphs back: I made something happen too quickly or I picked up the scene in the wrong place or I got carried away writing one particular part of the scene and then I just couldn't pull myself out.
I like to think that I'm getting better at catching it before I'm a thousand words deep, but I still end up here often enough that I don't think it's true.
25. Have you ever upset yourself with your own writing?
Yes! Like, I do know that they're fictional characters, but I'm invested in them and sometimes I get upset because of the things happening to them but also sometimes I just get kind of locked into a more tense scene and I can kind of feel myself getting more and more tense or frustrated as I write the scene itself?
I wrote an argument back in January and when I typed the last sentence I was breathing so hard that I had to go do a lap around my house and have a glass of water.
29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic. (If you don’t have either, just share a random fic idea you have that you don’t plan on getting to.)
I had to hunt a little bit for something tailored to you and I couldn't find it BUT. When I wrote my FATWS/Cloak and Dagger crossover, the final chapter was supposed to be Ty and Tandy heading out for some kind of date (I think it was an anniversary dinner) and Ty spinning like a dozen plates while he got ready for that and handled things at work, and i ended up scrapping like 1200 words because they simply were not landing me where I needed to be.
Anyway under the cut is Tyrone being an upstanding young man who runs a shelter for Blip orphans but also being peak younger sibling and eavesdropping when there are other things to be done. He contains multitudes.
Cass says yes, so Ty waves over one of their college interns and tells her that Cass’s uncles will be coming by to pick him up and she should let them drop off their donations by the main office before they head out. She’s a new hire, which is probably why she furrows his eyebrows at him and asks, “But how will I recognize his uncles when they come to pick him up?” Behind her, the kids snicker. “Trust me,” Amara calls, “you’ll recognize them.” Ty gives her a look before turning back to Nicole. “Cass will point them out to you, but they’ll be happy to show ID if they need to. Sam Wilson and James Barnes.” Her eyes bug out slightly with realization and Ty tries not to laugh. “You’ve got this. I’m gonna get going, but if you need anything, Melissa and Oliver are in the office.” Nicole looks mildly overwhelmed, but nods gamely enough that Ty feels comfortable leaving her there. He checks his watch again as he heads up to the small office he shares with Tandy. She’s not at her desk, probably busy putting out a last minute fire before they head out for the evening, but she’s left him some paperwork to go over for the kids’ trip to the science museum next month.  He’s checking over the second page when he hears a car outside, rolling to the window in his desk chair to see the Wilsons’ truck pulling up to the house. The bed of the pickup is mostly loaded with bags of what looks like soil and wooden beams, but nestled in the corner are the boxes of books that Sarah said she’d send along for the kids. As Ty kicks off his sneakers to swap them out for his dress shoes, he hears the sound of a door opening and closing before Sam and Bucky’s voices drift in through the open window. “-definitely not doing zucchini; if I never see another one again, I’ll be happy. I swear someone was putting extras on that plant just to mess with me.” Ty snorts. Out on the sidewalk, Bucky drily asks, “Who needs world domination when you can take down Captain America with summer vegetables?” “All I’m saying is that we do not need to leave space in this plot or anywhere else in the garden for zucchini, not this year or for the next five.” “Noted,” Bucky says, and Ty doesn’t need to see them to know that he’s trying not to laugh. “Any strong feelings about eggplants?” It’s instinct to wrinkle his nose, but Ty tells himself that Bucky’s from the 1940s, and the meanings of various emojis were probably not high priority when they were bringing him up to speed on the modern world. He shakes his head and turns back to the paperwork, flicking to the next page as the conversation continues outside, Bucky asking if they’re late and Sam assuring him that they have another ten minutes before it’s time to pick up Cass. He’d close the window, but the room is small enough to be unbearable without fresh air, and Ty would rather not sweat through his new button down before he and Tandy even leave for dinner. He mostly tunes them out while he checks over the transport documents and the list of chaperones, but then he hears his own name. He’s braced to hear about some world ending event or another, but it turns out that it’s just Sam saying, “I know he and Tandy have their hands full here, but we should invite them up. Have everyone get to know each other when they’re not all risking their lives.” “Wait, is this why you checked out that book on team building at the library the other day?” There’s an extremely eloquent silence from Sam before he says, “Maybe.”

Just Sam and Bucky, packing Scott's van with not only AJ and Cass for Sarah, but Cassie, Eli, Tandy, Tyrone, America, Kamala, Peter, and Kate. They use Wong's portals to drop every kid at their middle school, high school, and college. They embarrassingly yell a tearful "Have a good first day!" to all their Young Avengers and their nephews.

Merci beaucoup ❤
Helloooo ✨
D'abord désolée mille fois d'avoir pris six mois pour répondre à ta commande 😭 (bon, deux en vrai mais still, in internet time, it's forever mdr).

Camilla George - Ibio-Ibio
Saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator Camilla George makes a stunning return with her third album ‘Ibio-Ibio’ - a rich, cultural journey dedicated to her Ibibio tribe of south eastern coastal Nigeria, out 30th September on Ever Records / !K7 Music on black vinyl, CD, as well as a limited run of yellow vinyl. The album is a heady mix of afrobeat, hip hop and jazz co-produced by Camilla George. Across eight tracks, Camilla’s virtuosic alto saxophone performance collaborates with a stellar line-up of some of the hottest players in London’s jazz scene including Daniel Casimir (bass), Shirley Tetteh (guitar), Winston Clifford (drums), Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet), Rosie Turton (trombone), Renato Paris (vocals), Sarah Tandy (keys), plus Senegalese kora player Kadialy Kouyate, acclaimed US drummer Daru Jones (Jack White, Pete Rock, Talib Kweli), and Birmingham’s finest MC Lady Sanity. Camilla describes: “This album is a celebration of roots, creation and community. The Ibibio people, related to the Anang are the most ancient settlers in Nigeria. They stand for community and togetherness - something that in these increasingly strange times, gives me guidance, hope and comfort. I have dedicated ‘Ibio-Ibio’ to the Ibibio people and celebrate our creation and beliefs. Ibio-Ibio is a nickname for the Ibibio people, meaning brief / short, which is a reference to our quick and direct way of doing things and not our height!”

by land, by sea, by dirigible (final chapter)
They’d had a neighbor, back when Sam and Sarah were little, who would tell them all sorts of stories when she came over to keep an eye on them: stories about New Orleans before it was New Orleans, about magic imbued in the earth and the many brinks that the city had come back from. She’d told them how New Orleans had its own protectors, always chosen in twos and more powerful than anyone would believe.
Sam wishes, in retrospect, that he’d listened just a little bit better.
Five times that Team Cap crosses paths with the Divine Pairing and one time they don’t.
----
At some point, Ty is going to have to have a word with Tandy about her definition of playing hooky. He’s pretty sure, as he examines a mint plant for damage before setting it in his cart, that this is not what anybody means when they say those words.
Spending a surprise day off picking up plants would not have been Ty’s first choice, but admittedly it’s kind of cute how invested Tandy is in the garden that the kids planned together. Besides, he’s pretty sure that she’s choosing to call this extremely responsible use of time ‘playing hooky’ so she doesn’t have to face up to the fact that she is now a responsible, law-abiding adult with a color-coded calendar. (Ty doesn’t see what’s so bad about having a color-coded calendar in the first place, but then again, he’s the one who color coded it.)
The day hasn’t been a total loss, though: when he told his mom they were going to get plants for the garden, she’d sent him the address of a garden center run by a friend of hers, almost an hour away. Immediately afterwards, she’d sent him the address of a restaurant along the way with award-winning cobbler, and Ty is smart enough to recognize good advice when it’s offered.
They’ve opted for a divide and conquer approach so they can make it to lunch sooner, which is why Tandy is inside discussing bulk discounts on gardening gloves and trowels while Ty is outside inspecting tiny potted herbs.
It’s fairly empty, given that it’s 11 AM on a weekday, which is probably why it’s so easy for Ty to pick up on the familiar voices coming from behind a row of oversized hibiscus plants.
Briefly, Ty wonders if there’s some kind of multiversal crisis happening at the Beaulac Garden Center that brought Captain America there, but then he realizes what they’re talking about.
“-doesn’t matter to me what we plant now,” Sam is saying emphatically, “as long as we don’t do zucchini in the spring. Fuck zucchini. If I never see another zucchini again, I’ll be happy. I swear someone was putting extra ones on the plant every day just to mess with me.”

DFP Actors August: Tandi Wright
Tumblr media
NZ actors tend to end up in a lot of the same shows over the years it seems. I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!
Shortland Street (1996/1996-1999)
Tumblr media
Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996. Tandi played Nurse Caroline Buxton 1996-1999 per IMDb.
Xena: Warrior Princess (1996,2000/2000)
Tumblr media
Dean played two roles: Homer/Orion - S1E13 “Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards” Wiglaf - S6E9 “Return of the Valkyrie”
Tandi played Sarah, aka Sonata, in S6E4 "Who's Gurkhan?".
Serial Killers (2004)
Tumblr media
Dean played Andrew, the actor for “Dr. Gilligan” on the in-universe soap opera ‘Heart of Hearts’ in all 7 episodes. Tandi played Sally in all 7 episodes. (Off the top of my head I can't think of her job title, but she's in charge of the show 'Heart of Hearts' somehow. She bosses the writers around, but isn't one of them.)
This is the first thing I saw Tandi in, and I didn't recognize her in Brokenwood when I watched it because she looks and acts so differently.
Legend of the Seeker (2009/2009-2010)
Tumblr media
Dean played Carver Dunn in S1E17 “Deception”. Tandi is credited as Mord 'Sith in S1E18 "Mirror" and Alina in S1E22 "Reckoning" and S2E21 "Unbroken" - but idk if they're the same character actually because she looked the same?
The Brokenwood Mysteries (2018/2018)
Tumblr media
They are in the same episode of this show! S5E4 “The Dark Angel”
Dean played Barnaby Buchanan, a man with PTSD who ends up at the Deschler Clinic, enduring more trauma. Tadi plays another patient at the clinic, Lulu, who believes she is a mouse.
Both of their characters are so interesting and have weird quirks and behaviours that make them really interesting to watch. I felt so bad for both of them. I think they did a great job making the patients out to be super weird and then explaining how they got to that point and making you empathize with them and wish better for them.
-
That's all I have for these two - did I miss anything?
