The last giants are falling in British Columbia. Old growth forests, home to tall, ancient trees, are still being commercially logged. Now, less than 1% of forests in B.C. are home to stands of large, old trees.

This destruction affects communities across Canada. Healthy, old growth forests clean the air, shield us from fire and flooding, and store massive amounts of carbon. Once logged, it takes hundreds of years to recover the majority of that stored carbon. Protecting old growth forests is one of the most effective things we can do to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The B.C. government committed during the last election to implement all 14 recommendations from the old growth review panel, and ban logging for the most at-risk old growth forests immediately. But they still haven't followed through, leaving the majority of these forests on the chopping block.

These ancient forests need our protection, before there's nothing left.

När våra ledare inte har ambitionen, kunskapen eller insikten att göra tillräckligt när det gäller miljöfrågor och klimatförändringar, så måste vi göra mer själva. Jag har påbörjat ett projekt där jag kommer att åka till naturreservat och måla bilder från dessa vackra platser. Målet är att sätta ihop en utställning och skänka pengar från försäljningen av tavlorna till organisationer som jobbar med att skydda natur och djurliv. Det här kan verka litet, men det är ett sätt att kunna ge mer än vad jag annars skulle kunna göra. Ett sätt att försöka göra skillnad.

When our leaders don't have the ambition, the knowledge or the insight to do enough about environmental issues and climate change, we have to do more ourselves. I've started a project where I'll visit nature reserves and make paintings from those beautiful places. The aim is to put together an exhibition and donate money from the sales of these paintings to organisations that work to protect nature and wildlife. This might seem small, but it's one way to give more than I could otherwise do. One way of trying to make a difference.

Yesterday Georgia Police shot one of their own and put him in the hospital. He's fine. However, they also shot and killed an unarmed civilian and are now accusing four other people of domestic terrorism for trying to protect a forest.

Atlanta is trying to build a giant police playground by bulldozing an entire forest in the south part of the city. They aim to spend around 90 million USD on this project while the streets of the city are covered in houseless people driven out of their homes by the predatory realtors who sold out to Airbnb. The Bank of America and numerous private entities have bought the Council and are forcing this police playground, aka Cop City, on the community against the protests of everyone actually living in and around the forest.

The Weelaunee Forest is significant ecologically to provide cooling shade, protective windbreaks, and control flooding in this part of Atlanta. Without it, temperatures on the raw concrete will skyrocket in the summer, freeze uncontrollably in the winter, and flood dangerously anytime it rains. The direct harm to the people who live here is incalculable, but police training facilities and reckless police spending are demonstrably harmful to surrounding communities.

The blood of the fallen Forest Defender is their responsibility. They are already changing the narrative to insinuate that one of the protesters shot at the attacking police force. They are going to kill more.
