Can we just talk about how good this scene in The Spear of Selene! is?

To start, we’ve just got the gradual buildup of Dewey and Webby adventuring around Ithaquack, just to find some sort of answer about Della. It all culminates in this line:

Webby: We’re so close to the truth! Why won’t you let us find it?!

Dewey: Because…what if my mom was a bad person?

And even though she really wants to figure this one out, Webby respects Dewey’s wishes, and decides to drop it for now. But then Dewey has a change of heart, deciding that if they’ve gotten this far, they should see it through to the end.

At which point, an ominous figure jumps out from behind them…

…who turns out to be the Goddess of the Moon herself, Selene!

One thing I will make note of is the fact that Frank and Matt were originally intending Selene to be more serious and regal, but they ultimately reworked her characterization to better fit Nia Vardalos’ voice, which is how we ultimately got the wise, yet laid-back and playful Selene we all know.

Anyway, Selene explains that the whole gauntlet Dewey and Webby just went through was intended for Della, because she knew Della would find it fun.

On the topic of whether Selene would have actually known that Della got stuck on the moon, her moon, I would like to think that yes, she did know. I mean, besides the previous point, she and Della are super close; it just doesn’t seem right to have her not know what happened to Della. As for why she couldn’t do anything about it, well, need I remind you who her father is? But I digress.

So Selene, despite being this all-powerful goddess, doesn’t know what Dewey’s talking about by a “Spear of Selene”, but eventually realizes that he’s “Della’s kid” when Dewey brings up “his mom” taking it.

Even though Dewey’s dismayed that he’s now back to square one, Selene assures him that Della was a good person. The greatest, even. And she made everyone around her better.

She even gives it to Dewey for him to keep.

And she assures Dewey not to give up his search, because Della wouldn’t have, either.

And then we get this sweet bit…

Also, I just love how gentle Selene is with Dewey in this scene. I mean, the boy’s never met his mother, has been looking ceaselessly for answers about her for months, and even though Selene doesn’t have all of them, she tells Dewey what he needs to hear, and even gives him a much-needed hug. She’s not Della, but she gives Dewey that maternal guidance that he really needs right about now.

Random headcanon: Just like Louie with Goldie, Dewey calls Selene “Aunt Selene”. Well, I can see all the boys doing that at some point, but Dewey would probably be the first one.

So many options to choose from! I’ll pick Paper Airplanes, Della fighting with her girlfriends

This is an interesting one! It's not a one-shot, even though the title sort of makes it seem like it is- it's part of a larger superhero narrative that Nubs and I have been working on. This chapter specifically is about Della being her avoidant self, but also realizing that is it necessary to tell her girlfriends "hey by the way, I'm becoming a superhero again."

Rightfully, they don't exactly take it the best. "But yeah, I just wanted to mention that Donnie and I used to be superheroes named Paperinik, apparently we're responsible for the moonlander's fear of the earth, we decided to come back and we're doing superhero work again, there was a book about astronomy I was thinking about picking up, and... yeah, that's pretty much it!" She said, clapping her hands together. "Pretty short of a talk, but I thought you deserved to know and everything. All good? All good."

"This honestly could have been an email." Penumbra agreed before Selene stands up, lifting her kettle off the heater.

"Hold on, you're doing what now?" The goddess in disguise asked, not noticing as the steaming hot water slopped onto her hand as she lifted her arms up in disbelief.

"Oh, I was thinking about picking up an astronomy book." Della shrugged, hands in her pockets. "I know you probably have it on your bookshelf, but like- I like owning things, you know?"

"Della, are you really going to be Paperinik again?" The older woman asked, pouring the hot water into three cups before the pain from being burned finally registered, and she dropped the kettle to the ground.

"Oh, Me damnit."

Selene cursed, putting her singed fingers into her beak to suck on before shaking them out.

"That looks like it hurt, are you okay?" Della asked, frowning in concern as she took Selene's hand. "Seriously, while you're in this type of body you're going to have to deal with pain, sweetie. It's a thing. Mainly to stop us from destroying ourselves."

"I'm fine." The Swan replied. "And don't think I didn't notice you dodging the question. Della, what in hades are you planning?"

"To get a book. Like I said." Della repeated stubbornly. "...And maybe also be Paperinik again- look, it's fine! You don't need to worry, we'll be good and all that."

"I really think I do need to worry, actually." Selene insisted as she gently removed her hand from Della's grip.

"You're not seriously going to go running around in a cape and tights punching people are you? You're almost forty!"

"Yes." Penny agreed, nodding her head. "How could you leave us out of that?"

"Penumbra, I love the enthusiasm but I think you're focusing on the wrong thing." The goddess tried to tell the taller woman.

"Not really, this will be a good communal bonding experience for us to share. We will shed our blood together in glorious righteous combat."

For the shipping headcanon ask game: Dellene

Wee, Dellene! That's actually my favorite Della ship (Don't tell Penumbra- she's a very close second) aside from Dellumbrene at least

6: Going out to eat- who pays? Who orders the most food? And who has dessert?

It's always a tossup who actually ends up paying for the meal. Neither of them want to, of course, since it's usually so expensive. Della's excuse is that she's constantly broke, and Selene's a greek goddess- she can just ask for some offerings and she's golden! Selene's excuse is that Della's uncle is literally the richest duck in the world, so she can just steal his wallet every so often or something. (They usually end up with Della paying- with Scrooge's money)

Selene actually orders the most food, both before and after Della goes to the moon. At first it was because Selene just is absolutely enamored by mortal stuff, and one of the things mortals are always doing is making new, strange foods. She likes to order as much as she can and try everything, even if she rarely finishes it.

After the moon, it's more of a 'Della barely orders any food anymore because she has bad eating habits (chewing gum for 10 years will do that to you) and rarely eats that much, so now I'm going to order "too much food" for myself and share it with her' thing. It actually works shockingly well, honestly.

Della always has dessert, though. Before the moon, her go-to was anything chocolate, though afterwards chocolate starts reminding her too much of black licorice. So instead she stays mostly to stuff like donuts or ice cream. It works fairly well for her.

Selene always steals some of her dessert, of course.

11: Baths or showers? Together or separate? Any bubbles or bubble fights?

Yes to all of it. Della generally prefers showers, she feels like baths get cold too quickly. Selene, though- I mean she's a greek goddess. She adores baths, sees them as essentially necessary for life.

And the two always prefer to take them together, only ever refraining from doing so when they need to actually focus on getting clean and not... other stuff. I'd say Della's almost always around when Selene takes a bath, but Selene joins Della in the shower around 50-60% of the time.

And so many bubbles. One time on a date, Selene and Della went to the mall, and Selene saw 'bath bombs.' One quick purchase and filling of a tub later, and they were now polyamorous because Selene was in love. (That's a joke- they'd been poly since pretty much the get-go tbh)

And it's Della and Selene, of course they get into bubble fights. It's their second favorite activity to do in the bath!
