It’s time for my favourite girl!
Now I usually headcanon Rose as Bi but recently I’ve been thinking that maybe she’d identify as Pan or maybe be unlabelled because I think Rose would be the type to like someone no matter what they look like but I also think she wouldn’t really put a name to it. I think either works for her.
Rose has always had an interest in men but as she got older started to realise that she liked girls a lot too. The first girl she ever kissed was her friend Shareen when they were both thirteen because they were having fun and wanted to know what it was like and if they would like it. Shareen decided instantly that it wasn’t really for her but Rose realised that she actually didn’t mind the kiss. She didn’t feel anything for her friend but she knew that it wasn’t because she kissed a girl.
For a short while she had a relationship when she was fourteen with a girl who lived a few streets away. Her name was Nell and they used to hang out after school and cuddle at Nell’s. They kept it hidden because neither girl were out yet and eventually they had to break up because Nell and her family moved away. Rose found out years later after social media became more popular that Nell had a girlfriend she started dating a few years after she left and they were expecting a baby. Rose was very happy for them.
She kept it hidden that she liked girls because in the early 2000s it wasn’t as accepted and when she met and started dating Jimmy she didn’t mention it because he didn’t seem the type to accept anything like that. She didn’t feel comfortable sharing that news about her with him but still liked him because she was young and he made her feel pretty. She eventually realised that he wasn’t good for her after all the things he did and with the help of her mum and Mickey she was able to get out and come home.
Rose came out to her mum shortly after and although Jackie was a bit confused at first she eventually came around and became Rose’s biggest supporter. The moment anyone discriminates against her Jackie is furious.
Despite her feelings for The Doctor, Rose definitely found Gwyneth attractive. She felt a connection to her and like she understood her a lot. She didn’t act on anything because she was starting to develop feelings for The Doctor and it was in the past so Gwyneth probably wouldn’t have appreciated Rose being so forward.
The Doctor ended up taking her to the future and the TARDIS had accidentally dropped them off near a pride parade event. The Doctor had been surprised but also happy when Rose was excited about it and he took time to explain all the flags even the ones that in her time weren’t as popular. She felt so happy and safe with him she decided to come out as Queer. At this point in her journey she wasn’t exactly sure what she identified as she just knew she liked men and women. She enjoyed dancing at the event and even got a few souvenirs to take back to her room on the TARDIS. She had her photo taken in front of one of the pride signs with The Doctor next to her, which she keeps on her bedside table as both a reminder of the great day she had and to remind her of her first Doctor. She vowed to go again with Ten but she never got the chance.
Rose would sometimes flirt with the men and women on planets or times they visited before her feelings for The Doctor got serious. It would often make The Doctor a little jealous.
She and Jack once had a competition to see how many people in a bar they could get the numbers of. The loser had to buy them all the next round. Rose only just managed to win by getting the number of a person called Robin. The Doctor was very exasperated by the both of them.
During her time with the dimension canon to find Ten, she saw the Thirteenth Doctor and was a little surprised. She’s always been sure after getting over her shock of him regenerating the first time that she would love him no matter what he looked like. She knew that she would love this version too.

Having been re-watching Human Nature/The Family of Blood recently, I've been wandering about how your OCs would cope with the rather difficult challenge of living in 1913, in particular, how Shareen and Lulu would deal with it. I get the impression that both Shareen and Lulu are very strong-willed young women, and it's likely that they might end up clashing with some of the arseholes that seemed to populate 1913 Farringham, in particular Joan Redfern and Mr Rocastle. Would Shareen and Lulu find themselves clashing with those characters?
So, with Lulu, she's definitely strong-willed, which is not really a personality trait women were encouraged to have in 1913, so yes, she'll come into conflict with quite a few people, Joan Redfern and Mr. Rocastle among them. I'm actually debating having the TARDIS make Lulu John Smith's wife and people going, "Mr. Smith, will you please get your wife under control?!" Fortunately, John Smith has just enough of the Doctor's sense left to know trying to control Lulu is like trying to make the sun set earlier (both are foolish moves), so he simply says, "I can do my job or I can handle Lucinda. I cannot possibly do both. No one could."
As for Shareen, I'm not entirely sure she's even going to be in 'Human Nature'/'Family of Blood', as that's about the time she'll be busy with her own mini arc over on Torchwood involving her sort-of-deceased cousin, Suzie. But she would definitely be coming into conflict with people too, no worries about that!

A snippet of Time Crash with Shareen:
Just then, another alarm sounded from the console. "Right, TARDISes are separating." the 10th Doctor said. "Sorry Doctor, time's up, back to long ago. Where are you now?" he asked out of curiosity. "Nyssa and Tegan? Cybermen and Mara and Time Lords in funny hats and the Master? Oh, he just showed up again, same as ever."
"Oh, no, really?" the 5th Doctor grimaced, knowing only too well the trouble the Master could cause.
"Yeah, and I got shot 'cos of him." Shareen said bitterly.
"Shareen..." the 10th Doctor began.
Shareen ignored him and showed the 5th Doctor her bandaged up bullet wound. "See? That's what your evil boyfriend did to me." she fumed. "The bastard used me as a f**cking Human shield and Peacock over there took his side!"
"I-I didn't take his side." the 10th Doctor protested meekly. "I just thought I could cure him."
"Well, you're deluded." the 5th Doctor told him disapprovingly. "If Galifrey's finest healers couldn't cure his insanity, I fail to see why we would have better luck. And it seems we've become careless in our old age, letting our companions be harmed like that."
"I've said I was sorry till I'm blue in the face!" the 10th Doctor grumbled. Clearly Shareen wasn't going to forgive him for causing the Master's rise to power anytime soon.

Hi, Kass!
OC creators that have helped me through 2023:
You, @themaradwrites @goldheartedchaoticdisaster and @cecexwrites have probably done the most to help me this year. When branching out into the OC Community, I connected to you all, primarily through the OC Creator Bingo. You have all become good friends to me, inspired me, been lovely commenters (both on my fics and in replying to my comments on yours), introduced me to new fandoms, sent me asks, and talked me through elements of my fics.
@shrinkthisviolet helped me dip my toe back into the Star Wars fandom, which was one of my first and treasured fandoms. I never would have watched the Obi-Wan Kenobi series without her. Lucy Kenobi was probably the first Star Wars OC that I read.
@come-along-pond and @the-time-lord-oracle have helped me (whether they knew it or not) by getting back into reading Doctor Who fanfiction, revisiting one of my favorite Doctors, and inspiring me to create my own OC for the fandom, which has made the 60th Anniversary of our show even better.
I have had some amazing fics by you all and still have more that I want to read from you.
OC fics of others that helped make 2023 a little better:
Shatterpoint series by shrinkthisviolet
Prince of Ruin by cecexwrites
The Designated Driver Series by the-time-lord-oracle
The Themii Series by the-time-lord-oracle
Guardians of the Galaxy: Remix by themaradwrites
MEMORIES by come-along-pond
Safe & Sound by arrthurpendragon
bad boy (no more) series by @avatarskywalker78
OCs of others that made 2023 not so crummy:
Lucy Kenobi (shrinkthisviolet)
Coco Selwyn (cecexwrites)
Elaine Barnes (AvatarSkywalker78)
Nicky Connors (AvatarSkywalker78)
Shareen Costello (the-time-lord-oracle)
Gazelle (the-time-lord-oracle)
Riley Black (themaradwrites)
Casey Carlisle (themaradwrites)
Poppy Watcher (come-along-pond)
Project some love into 2024 for another OC creator or fic:
I am hoping in 2024 that @munstysmind gets to revisit her Hawaii Five-0 story and that @millie-55 will have more time to write.
As for myself, I am hoping to get back to neglected OC stories Is This Love? and Never Knew. I had some burnout and writer's block in the Karate Kid/Cobra Kai fandom, but I'm hoping to overcome it in 2024. Julie and Alyssa deserve to have their stories told and finished, though I doubt they'll be finished by this time next year. And I would like to start posting Molly's story and writing Violet's.

My Nail Lady (chapter 2) on AO3
Chapter 1 on Tumblr    Chapter 1 on AO3
Read chapter 2 on Tumblr below the cut.
Chapters: 2/? Fandom: Doctor Who (2005) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, John Smith/Rose Tyler Characters: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Shareen Costello Additional Tags: AU, lawyer AU, Nail Technician AU, Pining, Acquaintances to Friends to Lovers, Friends to Lovers, Romance, I might add more characters later
Summary:
His job wasn’t fancy. It paid the bills. It let him roam the world for three weeks every year during his vacation.
Obviously, it didn’t allow John a better office.
But better office meant no Rose…
John rubbed his hands on his face angrily and muttered “Christ, I’m pining for a girl who doesn’t even remember my existence unless she sees me sitting behind the desk."
Tumblr media
The day was dying, but the hustle and bustle of the shopping centre’s halls was far from its ending.
Many ladies attended the nail parlour, so John was able to stare at Rose all he wanted without the risk of being caught. She was lost in the world of swirls and flowers and nail varnish palettes. John loved looking at her in the process of work (that was if he wasn’t castigating himself for acting like a stalker). Rose would always stick her tongue out while working on something that required precision, and tended to mute out conversations that floated around her. That was the reason for many squabbles from the clients, too. Some ladies expected her to act as a therapist, too. Some were outright rude.
Just yesterday there was a shrilly-sounding woman who wanted a freaking painting replica on her ring finger, and Rose was stuck with her surly face and constant jittering.
John had no idea how Rose stayed calm. He’d snap before 30 minutes went by, really. Said lady was fidgeting incessantly and made a lot of unhappy comments about Rose’s work. At first, the woman didn’t like the way the chosen colour looked on her hands. Then she decided to move “the painting” to the index finger. She threw a tantrum when Rose and later the manager of the parlour told her that the re-drawing would cost her more money. When the scandal started to attract the attention of the people and the shop assistants, the security intervened. John was shocked. How could anyone make such a big deal out of the bleeding nail colour?
The shrieky lady left the parlour an hour later. She was positively fuming about not getting her way and getting warned by the security. John assumed that the only reason she hadn’t left earlier was because Rose had already finished one hand, and it would be hard to find the manicurist who’d have the exact same shade of polish somewhere else in that neighbourhood.
John shrugged nonchalantly. Good riddance.
It was around 8 o’clock, and John wasn’t expecting any clients to appear in his humble office. He didn’t want to go home yet because Rose was working until 9, and he fancied a daydream (an evening dream) about walking her to the bus stop. Chatting, even. Of course, it was all wishing and no doing for John. Somehow, he would lose all his confidence and chicken out every time the working day ended.
Still, he could use spending some time on paperwork, and the stories the nail ladies shared between each other again in quiet voices lulled him into a gentle trance. John blinked, and the clock showed 20:49. Right. Time to go home.
He closed the glass door to his office and pulled out a set of keys to lock it. John heard hushed conversations and snickering when the keys fell out of his hands with a loud clank on the tiled floor. He knew that he blushed. He also knew that Shareen Costello (and he knew her full name because she actually went into his office the first day she started working at the parlour to get acquainted. She outright flirted, but he wasn’t interested in anyone at that time. Now he was interested in Shareen’s best mate, Rose). Shareen always made a show of looking him up and down and smiling invitingly, but John would only smile cheerily and wave his hand while ducking into his office.
Right. Home. Maybe he’d be able to find the bravery to talk to Rose. To ask her out.
John scoffed. As if.
The ladies from the nail parlour were a flurry of activity in the hall. Each of the women were appointed a particular t-shirt colour, and there were four girls in the evening shift. Rose in a pink one, Shareen sported yellow, other two nail techs wore mint green and orange. John smiled crookedly. They reminded him of the tropical birds he had once seen in his travels to South America. They bickered a little, located two misplaced polish bottles and put out the instruments from the sanitising boxes to use the next day.
John stood there like an idiot, waiting. Damn it, he closed his office too early, and now he either had to leave without waiting for Rose or risk of being accused for stalking the women. He could pop to the loo, though...the girls would be at it for 10 minutes more at least, and he could make it back in slow stride in about 8 minutes. Then he could say good-bye to the security people and go out at the same time as Rose.
Oh, this was madness.
Nevertheless, he went back into the hall where his office was 9 minutes after and caught a splash of colour leaving out of the glass doors. Damn!
He ran to the doors just in time for the glass surface smack him right into the face.
“Oh my god!”
Rose!
“Are you alright, Mr Smith? God, what have I done? Are you hurt?”
Though his left cheek and nose hurt, John felt like smiling. Rose hit him in the face.
Brilliant!
Now they could talk.
Warm hands were placed on his forearms, and he smelled a hint of flowery perfume in the air around him. He looked down on her and put on his best smile.
“No, no, I’m perfectly fine, Miss, - he made a show of looking at her badge and heard Shareen Costello suppress a snicker, - Rose.”
The blonde smiled in return and checked him for visible injuries. John straightened his pose and beamed at her. He then proceeded by sticking out his hand and introduced himself.
“I’m fine, really, please, don’t worry. And please, call me John, I’m way too young for you to call me Mr Smith. Besides, only my clients call me that, and you are not my client, not that I’m saying that you can’t be. I mean, - he stopped abruptly and took a deep breath, - I hope you won’t need my services, unless, of course, you don’t come into inheritance, then I’ll be surely glad to help.”
The silence surrounded the hall. Shareen and the others had vacated the place, and only the night guard stood near the wonderful glass doors (they were wonderful because they finally made his first conversation with Rose happen) and sighed in irritation because he couldn’t close the mall’s doors until both him and Rose went out.
Oh God. He was babbling this whole time! Surely, she thought him an idiot by then!
But as John happened to mention earlier, Rose was kind and not prone to quick judging. Therefore, she stood there, looking up at his face, and was smiling rather charmingly at his antics.
“I’m Rose then, not Miss Rose, if you don’t mind. Rose Tyler, - she shook his hand firmly as if asserting her character, - and I am really sorry about the door smacking thing.” She looked away like she was contemplating something. “Would you consider chips as a compensation for your injury? I really feel bad about it.”
John felt as if he’d burst from happiness any minute then.
He uttered a delighted “Brilliant!” and led Rose out of the doors, making the night guard happy too for seeing the last of the staff out.
Molto bene, indeed.
~
There was a small chippy just two blocks down from the mall, and John had never been happier to walk after work instead of driving home in his rusty car.
Rose turned out to be even better than he imagined her in his daydreams. She was a good listener and didn’t seem to peg him as a babbling fool for all the words that continued to spill during their short walk.
The evening was pleasant, and the setting sun made the heat dissipate, allowing the Londoners a first breath of fresh air in what seemed like ages. John wondered if Rose was getting chilled because the temperature went down noticeably, but she didn’t give any indication to her discomfort.
Besides, they’d reached the destination. “Daisy’s” gleamed proudly in the disappearing daylight, and John gallantly opened the door before letting Rose in first.
He’d never been to this place before so he took his time to roam the interior and the atmosphere with his eyes. The place was cramped and wasn’t posh by all means, but the aura of the chippy was welcoming and rather light. Rose left John sitting in the small booth while she went off to buy some chips and cola for them. He liked her for not sticking to some stupid fashionable diets that did more harm than good; and he felt at ease because she wasn’t acting all funny and a little bit snotty like the ladies he went on a date with did. This, however, wasn’t a date. John needed to stick his feet to the ground, otherwise he might scare Rose away before inviting her on an actual date.
John was pulled back into the reality when Rose placed the plastic containers with chips and cans of cola. She pushed his portion towards him and smiled sheepishly.
“Thank you,” John had finally managed to offer with a smile of his own. He watched as Rose saturated her chips with salt and a noticeable amount of vinegar. He preferred his just with some additional salt.
The chips turned out to be rather good. Maybe it was Rose’s presence that made the chips and the small café better. Rose looked pretty in her pink uniform shirt and under the diluted light of the yellow lights. Her lips were moving and she looked more worried with each passing minute. Why was she worried?
Oh! She was speaking to him the whole time he was lost in his thoughts.
Damn.
John cleared his throat and looked at Rose properly. “Sorry, what?”
“I say, are you sure you feel fine? I think I smacked you with that door rather hard. Maybe we ought to go see a doctor?”
He shook his head, firmly denying her anxieties.
“Nah, I’m fine, truly. Don’t worry. It takes something more serious than a glass door to knock me out for good. My pal Jack says that my head is made of cement; we’ve been through so many shenanigans aa students – you wouldn’t believe half the stories I told you.”
His companion grinned in reply. “I would love to hear one or two of those stories, - she supplied and gestured at him, - so, did you attend a college, then?” Rose then turned red and stuttered a little. “I mean, God, yes, you probably did, you’re a lawyer, for Christ’s sake, they don’t just give the degrees out to every wishing person,” the blonde laughed nervously and went quiet.
John smiled gently trying to catch her eye. “Don’t worry, I’m rather daft myself. The professors were shocked that I actually finished uni what with my attention span and the hatred for everything tedious.” Finally, Rose peered at him and he beamed at her. “There you are!”
It was Rose’s turn to turn a pretty shade of pink. He decided to rescue her from the pit of embarrassment she found herself in.
“So, tell me a little about yourself, Rose Tyler. I’m ought to know more about the people I share working space with, in the end.”

Excuse me while I drop something sad here about immortal rose tyler and funerals. I'd say enjoy but I cried a little writing this so be warned
Rose had been to many funerals in her life. The saddest had been Jackie and Pete's joint funeral in the other universe, followed closely by her brother's funeral. She didn't stick around long enough for her daughter's funeral, but even if she had she would have looked as young as she did stood in the back of the church.
She'd stopped aging after the badwolf stunt, and she couldn't die either. It had been tested by daleks, cybermen, and other hostile creatures plenty for her to get the point. Still she was stood in the back of her own funeral.
The battle of Canary Whalf had been three weeks ago, two weeks had been spent trying to accept that she and her mother were actually gone, and the other spent planing separate funerals for them. Rose appreciated that.
Rose stood in the back of the church, shrouded in darkness and with a perception filter, watching the proceedings. An empty casket sat at the front and one by one the few people that had shown up stood and talked to it.
"You're gone, Mickey left, this wasn't how things were meant to go," Shareen said. Even with her back to the church and the distance between them Rose could hear her crying. It took everything in her not to go up and hug her. "This isn't how things were meant to be Rose, we were meant to raise our kids together." Rose felt a tear slip down her face. "You're too young to be gone."
Rose was too old to be alive, but the sentiment hurt just as much anyway. It tore at her heart and made her wish the timeline wasn't so fragile. She wished she could start aging so she could pretend to have just been injured and somewhere as an unidentified person. She couldn't though. She already knew that Shareen would go one to have a daughter she'd name Rose. She already knew that she couldn't interfere.
Keisha stepped up beside Shareen and took her hand. Offering her the only comfort she could get then.
"You promised you wouldn't be first, you promised you wouldn't do this to us not after everything we'd been through," she said, her anger nullified by the tears Rose could tell where there. "You promised Rose," she said, voice breaking.
They were too young for the grief of two friends. They'd get Mickey back, but they'd never be as close because he'd never tell them the truth. She knew that already too. She knew that Keisha would die in a few years leaving Shareen alone, the last of them, and she knew Shareen would have a second daughter she'd name after her.
"We miss you Rose," Shareen whispered.
Rose's heart ached for them. She wanted to tell them she was ok, that she'd always be ok. She wanted to tell them shew as alive, that she would always be alive. But she couldn't. And even if she could, she probably shouldn't.
She slipped out of the church, unseen, heart aching for her friends. Funerals were awful, but she never thought she'd attend her own.

Have you ever thought about doing crossovers with your OCs? Shareen Costello is a good choice for a crossover, since she's a character who exists in-universe. A meeting between Alex and Shareen would be fun!
I have definitely thought about doing crossovers (as soon as I get a series up besides Alex's, lol!)!. An Alex and Shareen crossover would be really cool! I've also got an idea to do one of my Time Lady OCs with one of my Once Upon a Time OCs, but that's probably a long ways off. But rest assured, crossovers will happen!

If Shareen Costello had been in The Girl in the Fireplace:
"The monsters and the Doctor. It seems you cannot have one without the other." Reinette mused.
"Tell me about it." Rose chuckled. "The thing is, you weren't supposed to have either." she went on seriously. "Those creatures are messing with history. None of this was ever supposed to happen to you."
"Supposed to happen?" Reinette glowered. "What does that mean? It happened, child, and I would not have it any other way." she went on haughtily.
"Oi, watch it, Fancy knickers!" Shareen said sharply. "Or you'll be going to ya next ball with a black eye!"
"How dare you!" Reinette glared. "I am the mistress of His Majesty the King of France! You would not dare strike ME!"
"I'm not French," Shareen retorted, "so try me!" And she stood up, ready to knock some humility into the snobby French woman.
"'Reen, it's alright, just leave it." Rose said hastily, not wanting a fight to break out.
"Yeah, well just watch the lip, ok?" Shareen said to Reinette, and sat back down again.
"One may tolerate a world of demons for the sake of an angel." Reinette mused, returning to the matter at hand.
"Huh, Peacock is no angel!" Shareen scoffed. "He's an arrogant git with delusions of grandeur."

But the Doctor, unsurprisingly, doesn’t seem all that enticed by a day of romance and weddings, and Rose is starting to draw the attention of others, one of whom is Rose’s ex-fiance, Jimmy Stone.

It’s his birthday.
An odd day. A day that should be important, that Rose should have memories of celebrating with John, showering him with affection and baking banana bread, even if it probably would have turned out horribly.
But she has nothing. She met John at the end of March last year. It is a liminal temporal period in which she should have no associations to his memory. It should be a reprieve.
With a shaky breath, she opens the door to their flat for the first time in nearly two months.
Whether she wants to or not, Rose Tyler is forced to reenter her life following the death of John.
Sequel to "up in fire" you're welcome to start here but I highly recommend at least skimming through the first parts for a baseline understanding.

ooo yes interesting (this can go along with the rose and martha headcanons btw):
- they meet through rose, of course
- shareen was rose’s best mate since primary school, while rose met martha when she was around 18
- shareen is bisexual, but closeted
- when rose went missing, they found comfort in each other
- sometimes shareen visits to just sit in rose’s room, martha has to help her break out of her grief
- shareen has taken to spending the night with martha or staying in her flat while she’s at work
- martha doesn’t mind, she likes the routine they have and the friendship they’ve grown over this past year
