This is how it continues: Keith holds his hand all the way to breakfast.

In itself not incriminating. Lance holds Hunk’s hand all the time. He’s always got an arm around Pidge’s shoulder. Shiro is amused by Lance’s incessant attempts to have them skip about with their arms linked. Sometimes he offers his arm to Allura with the poshest expression he can muster, just to make her laugh. Not all of his attempts are entertained by his friends, of course, but there’s nothing novel about Lance attaching himself to people as they move about.

Keith reaching out, as they walk out of the bedroom they just shared, and linking their hands together easy as pie is, however, novel.

Everything is so bizarre. It’s worsened, really, after a night of decent sleep (in a real genuine mattress!), because it’s just not what Keith and Lance…do. They race each other to doorways, yanking on hoods or sticking out legs to trip and get ahead. They escalate from light shoving to full on wrestling in the middle of conversations. Keith is not exempt from Lance’s constant need to touch, sure, but it’s never — like this. Light, easy, comfortable, familiar.

(It was, briefly, at the end. When on their way to meetings and briefings and missions even Keith’s hand would rest on the small of Lance’s back. Absentmindedly. Unnoticeable. But a he left a week after it started, and as far as he’s concerned anything started in that era has long since been left behind them.)

They’re late — the rest of the team has already gathered. Pidge and Allura are half asleep on either of Shiro’s shoulders, and Coran and Hunk are arguing intensely but playfully about a pile of unrecognisable goo that Lance has learned to recognise as the space version of oatmeal. Hunk pokes it in disgust. Coran feigns outrage.

All five faces turn to them as they approach, and Lance can’t place a single one of their expressions. He is made suddenly aware that he has loosened his grip on Keith’s hand when he feels him squeeze three times, quickly in succession.

“…Huh,” Shiro says after a moment, eyes trained on their clasped fingers. His face is carefully blank. No one else offers any commentary.

“How’d y’all sleep,” Keith asks, pulling out a chair. Lance realizes after a beat that it’s meant for him, and he flushes up to his ears. He tugs his hood over his head and nearly upends the table in his haste to melt into the offered chair. Keith, in contrast, sits down next to him and rests an arm over the back of Lance’s chair so smoothly it has to be practiced.

Pidge makes a choking noise, cheeks puffed up like she barely managed to keep her mouth shut. Hunk has both hands clapped over his mouth.

“Shut the fuck up,” Lance hisses, face redder than his lion.

Keith’s fingers brush his shoulder. He sinks further into his chair and tugs his hood down lower.

“I slept exceptionally,” Allura says loudly. The look she cuts Lance’s way is straight-up evil, and Lance knows what’s coming, and for several agonizing seconds he considers grabbing the spoon from the goo bowl and stabbing it straight through his eye. “The beds were very comfortable, didn’t you find, Keith?”

You are so dead to me, Lance thinks at her. He even thinks i’m in Altean so the fury can reach her properly.

“Yeah.” Keith leans over to press a kiss to his cheek. Lance’s face gets exponentially redder, and the peanut gallery starts screeching quietly, but despite himself he — leans. Into it. And Keith notices, because his mouth curves into a smile, and he presses another kiss to the curve of Lance’s jaw before pulling away. “Slept right for the first time in two years.”

“Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask you about that,” Shiro says, reminding Lance once again that he is, in fact, Lance’s hero, actually, last few months notwithstanding. He shoots Lance a fond, teasing smile, then turns back to Keith. “My question is: what the fuck?”

“Seconded,” Pidge agrees through a mouthful of goo.

Hunk grimaces at her. She shoves three more bites of goo into her mouth then opens her mouth and sticks out her tongue at the yellow paladin, just to be disgusting. With a scandalized “gross, Pidge!” Hunk shoves chair away and marches to the other side of the table, leaving Pidge sniggering.

Keith watches the whole thing with a smile on his face soaked in so much sadness Lance’s chest physically aches with it. He darts out a hand and wraps it around Keith’s, squeezing it in a mirror of the way he did before. Keith smiles gratefully at him, pulling up his hand and kissing the back of it. Somewhere, Lance hears someone mutter: “Christ alive.”

“There was a — shipwreck, of sorts,” Keith explains eventually. His voice is soft. “Krolia and I flew too close to something. Our intel was outdated. When we finally made it out of the wreckage we were stranded on the back of a space whale, and time was…stretchy.”

“That explains so very little,” Shiro says, shaking his head. He stabs his spoon in some goo. “Space has done little but piss me off in the last couple years, if I’m being honest. Keith, I swear to God I’m going to ground you.”

Keith grins. “Fat chance, old man. I outrank you now.”

“That’s what you think.”

Lance watches them both critically as they argue. Well, ‘argue’. They’re both grinning too hard for any real animosity. And exhaustion still lines Shiro’s features, and he still leans onto Allura for support, but there’s a brightness in his eyes that’s been missing for months. And Keith is —

Keith is here, leaping to his feet, spoon of goo bared dramatically, and he is tired too but he is warm and soft, somehow, and the weight that Lance has always watched on his shoulders seems to have lifted. There is an easiness to him now that there wasn’t before. And Lance notices and cannot stop noticing, because he is beautiful, and because for some reason he has decided to plant himself next to Lance, closer than before, and bleed his warmth. And Lance is supposed to be the lighthearted one and the joking one and the easy one. That is his role. That is what he knows how to play.

But he’s been struggling. And the role has not come easy. And last night he had cried until he slept in Keith’s arms and Keith had held him and checked the room and kissed his hair and has yet to let go of him.

Lance looks at Keith and thinks to himself: maybe just this one thing.

Keith reaches half over the table and musses his brother’s hair, pushing him back into Allura’s careful hold and sitting heavily back in his own seat. He frowns, staring at the space that has grown between his chair and Lance’s during his roughhousing. Slowly, he reaches over and grabs the bottom rung of Lance’s chair, dragging him over until the space between them has disappeared, then he nods once to himself, satisfied, and throws an arm around Lance’s shoulders, pulling him even closer.

And Lance thinks to himself: oh, God.

For a moment Lance is tense. He feels the stares of the rest of the team, teasing and interrogating all at once. He can already anticipate their questions, probably on par with his own.

Keith rests his cheek on top of Lance’s head.

“You good?”

Suddenly, none of that seems to matter. He thinks to himself: I need to sit him down and ask what the hell is going on.

Keith’s thumb starts to gently brush back and forth on the cusp of his shoulder.

He says: “I am now.”

This is how he lets it continue.

Do you have ideas on what the other characters godly parents would be? Hunk with Hephaestus makes sense to me, and I'm a fan of Keith son of Ares (learning to accept his godly dad could match with his arc about accepting he's part galra, a supposedly evil/violent side of him, + the anger and fighting skills), but not sure about the others...

hello!!! I'm glad you see the vision hehe. I actually sent many a paragraph to heynhay about this only yesterday. I was firmly on the son of Ares Keith headcanon but then... someone reblogged my post saying Keith son of Zeus (I think it was @pidges-lost-robot and i was like WAAAAIT.

Okay so here's my many many paragraphs explaining headcanons for each. Shiro son of Zeus: Okay so in my head Shiro & Keith are both sons of Zeus but for very different reasons. They're like Thalia vs Jason types. Shiro is a great leader, he's ambitious, he's brave, he's a legend. His dad is so proud. He's been on like 20 quests and absolutely demolished all of them. All the kids in camp know he's So Cool and Talented. He can be hot headed sometimes but ultimately he's really adept at setting aside his feelings for the Greater Good etc. Ideal hero type and ideal son to the big guy upstairs. Keith son of Zeus: Keith is all the bad traits of Zeus (sorry to him). He's got a short temper, he's impulsive, he's closed off. He's a prodigy without meaning to be. Everyone pays attention to him but (despite what Lance thinks) it's because they think he's a freak, he's not a big three kid the way you're Supposed To Be. And he doesn't want to be a leader. This really rubs Zeus the wrong way. Keith would rather disappear into the ranks of his fellow campers than be the star of the show and that goes against everything children of Zeus are supposed to be. His dad definitely refuses to claim him for a long time which makes Keith just some weird really powerful kid who doesn't know who his godly parent is. Luckily Shiro takes him under his wing : )) (too bad Shiro doesn't come back from his latest quest tho, no one knows where he went off to and Chiron doesn't want to send out a quest because if something kept Shiro The Legend from coming back to camp it must be really bad). Hunk son of Aphrodite: ANOTHER ONE I'M FIRM ABOUT. I think Hunk's defining characteristic is his love for his friends. Hunk is always looking for peaceful ways to solve problems, he's always forming relationships with people before doing anything else, he really values giving love to those around him. It also doesn't hurt that he's kind of squeamish and particular about a lot of things, as a lot of Aphrodite's children are. But I really think his greatest strengths are the ways he's able to relate to others. I know a lot of people say Lance is the glue that holds everyone together, but I think it's Hunk. I know the fanon is that Aphrodite's kids are all just big flirts but I think both Selena and Piper are great examples that that's not true, and Hunk would absolutely be their brother. Pidge daughter of Hephaestus: I've seen some people saying Athena for Pidge but that's another one where I just can't get behind it. Pidge is so smart in so many ways but so stupid in others. She's too impulsive and single minded to be a daughter of Athena, imo. Her main love is figuring out how things work, what makes them tick, and using that knowledge to help those she loves. Children of Hephaestus are know to hold grudges, fight for their families, and let's not forget Hephaestus spending literally all of his free time trying to play pranks on the other Gods with his little contraptions like that is all Pidge would do all day long. Plus she befriends a robot and that is who she talks to for the first like 3 episodes of Voltron that is so unbelievably child of Hephaestus energy. Anyway thank u for asking this question I've been thinking on it for days. I am also open to the idea of Shiro being a son of Athena, I think that would suit him well. And also in my head I like to think Keith would potentially just remain unclaimed until he stomped his way to Mount Olympus and forced whoever was his parent to fess up.

Lance has always been obsessed with Keith's hair for some reason. He didn't know why at first, but as time went on, it became so clear that he wanted to run his hands though it and feel it on his fingers.

He made comments about it being an ugly mullet to hide that fact. It didn't work, especially not when he confessed to Keith before he left for the Blade.

What? He was going to lose the chance to say anything anyway! And he was so happy when Keith kissed him to shut him up and told Lance that his feelings were reciprocated, he felt as if he were on cloud nine.

Since coming back from his fight with Shiro's clone (who they're forever going to refer to as Kuro as in 'Operation Kurone'), Keith has experienced some changes.

For starters, his eyes were more purple. Before they'd been a grey colour with purple undertones, but now they were properly purple. Then his canines were sharper, practically fangs, and his eyes would sometimes change. When he was angry, his irises would become slits and the sclera of his eyes would become yellow. It was hot, in Lance's humble opinion (Pidge called him an alien fucker when he said that at first. Lance said that Keith's dad was the true alien fucker. Shiro sprayed the water he was drinking everywhere and choked when he said that).

The most noticeable change happened to Keith's hair though. The ends of it lightened, until they were purple. It looked so cool, and it connected Keith to Krolia more. His hair stayed black, but now when it gets out it was purple.

Keith... Didn't think the same way as everyone else.

"I feel like I'm losing my dad. I've only ever looked like my mom, and the one thing that has ever connected me to my dad was my hair." The team had stopped on a planet for a rest, and Keith and Lance had gone off together to hunt down some meat and gather fruit and vegetables.

Lance stopped and grabbed Keith's wrist, forcing him to stop and turn to face him.

"You're still connected to your dad, Keith. It's just not entirely in your appearance," he said. Keith frowned.

"What do you mean?" He asked. Lance hummed.

"You said that he'd go head first into danger, right?"

"Yeah..?"

"And that he was a hero?"

"Where are you going with this?"

"According to your mom, your dad was kind, and reckless, and a hero and someone she loved enough to leave to keep safe."

"Mom said that?" Keith asked, sounding surprised. Lance nodded. "Where are you going with this anyway?"

"Because those are some things that you have in common with your dad," Lance answered. Keith opened his mouth, then closed it.

"... You're right," he eventually said. Keith reached up to his hair and fiddled with a purple end. "That stuff... Does connect me to my dad..."

"I'm never wrong about people things," Lance said, confidently. Keith smiled down at him (that had happened during the two year time dilation that Keith and Krolia went through, and Lance found that he liked having to look up over looking down).

"You know more about people than I do," he agreed. He pressed a kiss to Lance's forehead. "Thank you."

"Anything for you," Lance said. He pressed a kiss to Keith's lips. "Now, let's go catch something that Hunk can make into a good meal."

"Alright."

They worked quickly, and made their way back to the campsite with food that all of them could eat. Hunk was quick to take care of the food, Krolia helping him while Romelle stayed by Allura's side.

Lance sat on a log, and Keith settled himself between his legs. Kosmo flopped down with them.

Lance ran his hands through Keith's hair, smiling as Keith joked with the others and treated Shiro and Romelle like Lance treated his siblings - by annoying the hell out of them out of love.

Lance leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of Keith's head.

"I love you," he whispered. Keith hummed, tilting his head to look up at him. There was a smile on his face reserved just for Lance.

"I love you too," he replied.

Part 1:

Swinging your legs back and forth, you frowned a little bit as you stared at your feet, then up at the man who was stood next to you.

“I don’t get why I can’t just go home…” you grumbled.

“Sorry kid, it’s the rules you know that. You’re already a behind schedule, this is also the school that you chose to go to.”

“I didn’t think you were serious!”

He turned to look at you.

“Didn’t you listen when they explained it all to you?”

You shook your head and he sighed heavily, turning to the other man who was stood next to him.

“Weren’t you there? Why didn’t you make sure they paid attention?” He scolded.

“I wasn’t even paying attention.” He shrugged.

You looked up at them both.

“Shiro?”

The second man leant forward, giving you a little smile, stepping past so he could come kneel down in front of you.

“What is it?” He asked.

“What if I don’t do well…?”

He smiled, placing his hand on your head.

“You will, you’ve already got good control of your quirk. Remember you’re only here to attend a few classes a week, that’s all.”

“Well, yeah, but I still have to stay in the dorms and I don’t want that…”

He sighed softly.

“Unfortunately we can’t change that, it’s too far to travel back daily, but you’ve got the council watching things while you’re gone, and you’ll still get all your paperwork delivered each week since you love paperwork.”

You swatted his hand away, glaring a little.

“I hate paperwork.”

He grinned a little.

“Shiro don’t annoy them.”

“Come on Arthur, it’s funny.”

Arthur walked over, grabbing Shiro by the back of his jacket, pulling him away.

“Stop stressing them, it’s the first day of school, seriously.”

Shiro turned to you.

“Don’t worry about it, just give it your all, okay?”

You nodded your head, holding your hand out to him, he reached into his jacket, pulling out a candy bar for you and you grinned brightly at him.

You went to eating your candy while waiting, and only a minute later the door was opened.

“I’m sorry for the wait.”

You looked at the headteacher of UA as he walked into the office.

Shiro and Arthur straightened up, both of them standing behind you with their hands clasped behind their back.

“All the paperwork is here.”

Shiro stepped forward, setting one papers on the desk for Nezu to go through.

He carefully looked through them, nodding his head as he set them aside.

“It’s wonderful to have a member of a royal family attend our school!” He beamed.

You turned your attention back to him when he said that.

“Do I have to get a hero license as well?” You asked.

He laughed a little.

“No! Of course not!”

Nezu climbed on to his desk, he walked over and sat on the edge of his desk.

“As you are not actually a Japanese citizen, you have no need for a hero license for Japan unless you were wanting to become a hero. Your paperwork states you’re here just for basic classes and training, however when your quirk has been assessed we could offer you additional training.”

You nodded your head in understanding.

“Now, typically we don’t allow the use of quarks outside of training classes, however, given your situation, I have decided to allow you the use of your quirk to do your normal duties that you would when you’re at home.”

You nodded again.

“I’ve asked your home room teacher to come join us, that way you’re able to explain your quirk to us both.”

Just as he said that the door was opened and closed and you watched as the teacher walked.

Eraser head.

You’d been doing some research on the schools and what teachers taught where, trying to decide which would be the best one for you to enter.

With All Might now at this school you decided on this one, but you had read a little about Eraser head and his quirk.

“Now we’re all here, this is Mr Aizawa, your home room teacher. It’s important he knows everything about your quirk.”

“It’s called summoning, I can summon the spirits of the dead to help me. I’m not sure what the limit to this is. Ghosts can last for a long time, until I either banish them, or they get really hurt.”

Both the teachers nodded.

“Do you have full control over them?” Aizawa asked.

“No, I can summon them to help me but I can’t control them, they’re essentially their own person, I only summon the ones that would actually help me, though sometimes I mess up and summon some bad ones.”

“(Y/N) typically knows when they’ve summoned a bad spirit and can send them back before full manifestation, if they can’t that’s when we come in.” Arthur said.

Your two bodyguards began to talk, and you lost interest again, looking through your phone instead.

Shiro noticed this and he took your phone from you making you huff as you looked up at him.

“Pay attention.” He scolded.

“I’m bored…” you whispered.

Nezu laughed, and you turned your attention to him.

“Well, fortunately for this meeting is over. As it’s the end of the day and the start of the weekend you’ll be taken to the dorms, Aizawa will bring you some catch up work and talked you through things you missed, then on Monday you’ll attend some classes.”

You nodded your head.

“If you three want to follow Aizawa out, he’ll take you to your dorm room.”

“Thank you.”

Standing up, you followed the bored looking teacher out, he took you outside the school and you looked around.

You weren’t so used to being away from your home, so all of this was new to you.

Aizawa led you into the dorm, taking you to the top floor and he pushed a door open.

“This is your dorm, doctorate it however you want I don’t care. You have the basics, there’s a communal kitchen downstairs, you’re all responsible for your cleaning. I’ll introduce you to everyone tomorrow, these two have a room next to yours.”

“Thank you sir.”

He turned around and left, and you walked into the room, looking around it.

“Can you guys bring some of my things to decorate it?”

Arthur grinned.

“Of course, give me an hour.”

Arthur vanished, and you turned to Shiro.

“I’m hungry.”

“Stay here, I’ll go buy you some food.”

He was gone as well, and you explored your room out of curiosity, checking everything out, and deciding where you were going to put things when you were done.

Shiro came back first, putting your snacks away from you, and he picked up another bag.

“Let’s go to the kitchen.”

You happily followed him as he led you downstairs, sitting on the counter while he started preparing your meal.

“What are you making? Are you making meatballs?”

“Yeah, it’s your favourite so I thought it would be nice for you to have something comforting on your first night.”

You grinned brightly from ear to ear.

“I think it’s unique this school allows its students to live with one another, I bet there’s some really powerful quirks too.”

“Most likely, it’s one of the most prestigious schools in training the next generation of heroes, I assumed it’s why you chose this school.”

“I chose it because all might is here, it seemed logical since he’s the number one hero. It would be the safer option out of all the schools.”

Shiro turned to you.

“You really haven’t been paying attention to the news.”

“Actually I have, I did my research when you guys said it was serious. Despite facing actual villains they’re all still standing, I’m impressed to be honest, most would’ve run scared but not those guys.”

“It’s why it’s one of the best schools.” He replied.

Shiro stood in front of you, holding out some different herbs so you could have a look.

Jumping down, you scanned over them all, putting the ones you wanted aside.

“Hey, what smells so good?” A girl asked.

You looked up, shuffling beside Shiro as some students came wondering through, all stopping when they saw you.

Aizawa walked in, looking over at them and back at you.

“Everybody sit down, let me introduce our new student.” He sighed

During a routine mission to provide aid to a planet ravaged by the defunct Galra Empire, galra hold-outs pull Keith through a wormhole to who-knows-where and disable his ship before he defeats them. As he drifts through space alone and then crash lands on a deserted planet, he muses over his relationship with loneliness as he tries to keep his hopes up that his friends will come to the rescue. This time, it's Shiro's turn to be Keith's hero.

Mentioning some events that I liked in the midst of beefing with LWs' writers. It's mostly due to very specific things that occur in the events rather than the events themselves to be completely honest with you.

-Casual and fun beach event. Can't go wrong there. Good moments envolving most of the characters. Nomad, Azazel, Kengo, and Oniwaka in particular for me. They deprived me of Azazel content, so this is my only morsel to latch onto. Plus we got SQ Galore, including ones for Mononobe and Lil Salomon.

-The softcore discussion of gender dysphoria was a pleasant surprise and I liked the parallels drawn between MC and Astarte as "trophies". In particular, I liked how this event revealed how much the other guys actually love MC. They were completely indifferent towards Astarte while she was the beloved, which was super weird to her, and when MC switched places with her, they immediately clocked that something was off, but not because they could visually tell MC was obviously not Astarte. They just thought Astarte was more radiant than usual. They were all over MC and giving away their shells because they're MC, not because they were the beloved.

-That scene where Heracles falls into Narcissus' Pond and he comes to the realization that his narcissism and cowardness was what led to Hylas' fate. He thought that a hero of his caliber was too precious to even risk being lost to the naiads, especially not for a guy who was practically beneath him. Heracles put himself before the life of his friend who was willing follow him to hell and back, abandoning him, and he regrets it. The parallels to Hylas' abduction with Heracles' fall as well as dialouge and narration as MC dives after him are an absolute banger. "I knew. I knew you'd come. Not by another's comand but your own free will. Your radiance makes me want to weep. Before you, the thought of the man who failed to follow Hylas makes me want to cry." MC took the leap Heracles never did for Hylas, making them a better person than himself. Such a great moment. Absolutely adored it.

-First of all, exile reveal. Second of all, the reveal that Shiro's crush is more of an all-consuming OBSESSION. Always thinking of them. Always following them whatever path they decide to take. Knowing that they relied on him was his greatest source of happiness. He wanted to help them, to shoulder any and all of their burdens in the hopes that they would eventually feel the same way as him. Shiro was desperately striving for an insane, unhealthy co-dependent relationship where MC validates him by constantly needing him to help them and it's just ?!?!? This came way out of left field.

-Algernon. Algernon. Algernon. I absolutely loved it when he randomly got jealous and tried to change the topic when MC called Yamasachihiko hot. I love that he found someone who could keep up with him, an equal, in MC. I loved that they did a little tapdance routine together while killing the slimes. Oh. And Hombre Tigre. I'm not really a big fan of him. I just really like how interesting his dynamic with Quetzalcoatl is compared to everyone else. Hombre adoring Tezcatlipoca so much that he couldn't even begin to grasp why Quetzalcoatl would leave him behind and envying him for being the one who could consume Tezcatlipoca's thoughts and breaking him in such a manner.

-Sherlock Nomad and Assistant MC, the event we had all been waiting on. Anyways, y'all should know why I liked this event. It's that one scene where they beat Hermes' and he's just sitting on the floor like a pouty little kid when MC grabs his hand and he continues his little tantrum by telling them to let go while doing nothing to stop them. Hermes finally found a friend who could look past all of his lies and accept him with MC and I'm very happy for the bastard.

-That whole chase scene where Balor reveals that he's actually been a twat this entire time and he goes after MC, trying to capture them, is mwah. Love it. Also when Boogeyman triggered that ratfuck, Balor's, PTSD with his sacred artifact just the reveal that Lugh never had a choice in the matter and that Balor caused this fate to be forced upon him, something that he feared for himself in the first place. And the reveal that Balor didn't exactly regret killing his grandson. It was just the fact that Lugh didn't choose to fight him himself.

-The way Vapula was completely indifferent to his golemns until the very end where they're all silently gazing out into the sea after Sand Dragon self-deleted while following orders and are clearly fucked up about what they just witnessed, truly understanding how morbid Sand Dragon's existence was and the inevitability of his death, when MC turns to Vapula and says "Vapula.... We never got to name him" and Vapula just starts BAWLING.

-Oh look. A well executed plot twist. Loved the way that they conveyed Horus and Seth's true bond through how compatible and fluidly their memories were able to work together to fight against the group. Then there's the use of Seth's old memories to reveal that Horus had been on his side the entire time and that he was even the one who let him flee Duat. Also, an expansion on what seemed to be such a simple rule. Being able to control the sand being way more powerful than expected through a technicality.

-This one might actually be my favorite event. No. Not because it's a Fuxi or bird event. Shut your slut mouth. Banger music, great story, great picks for the characters and the dynamics, an exile reveal. Fuxi being so unhinged that he tries to fight literal children and Simurgh playing the straight man to his funny man will always be funny. Also, there was just that one moment where MC went "pull the trigger pussy" while Simurgh held a gun to their head and that's so based of them. Mostly dissapointed we didn't get more Nüwa lore.

The most prominent scene from the 2nd trailer for me is this. Looks to me that Kira is somewhere where Lacus can't reach him. But looks like Kira is really far now to be reached.

This is also another eye catching scene. Seems that Lacus who should think about the well being of the people, whispered 'Stop Kira' with a very worried look which I think she is afraid of something. It's a possibility that Kira is trying to sacrifice himself and Lacus of course don't want him to die. Or she is ordering her men to stop Kira and clearly it is one of the most hardest decisions she had to make if Kira turned out to be a villain.

This trailer showcases the cast in this movie. But somehow the focus is on Kira.

So Kira going full villain this time? It can be, considering he already developed his character in SEED and his ideals is put to test and elaborated further in Destiny. Clearly he found his answer by the end of it but we see in the trailer that he is being haunted by Durandal's words. For this movie though his character can go either Villain route or Cursed Hero route. But I wish he would go a Shiro Amada/Kincaid Nau route by the ending.

Wishful thinking though if Kira goes full villain then I want him to drop a colony on Earth. Truly commencing Kira's Counterattack.

Here's a long post no one asked for, but I gotta get off my chest. Lots of infodumping about Kingdom Hearts and in particular the casting of it's voice talent, so strap in y'all. So something I find very interesting is the way Square/Disney has treated the character of Kairi throughout the years. She started out as a damsel character, and was hated by very vocal group in the fanbase. I myself didn't really care about Kairi any which way, I didn't find her particularly interesting and I could understand the hate for the character like... a little bit? But what's funny to me is how that perception has changed over the years. Maybe there is still a very vocal group of people hating on Kairi on some forum I'm not aware of but I feel like the general consensus on her these days is: That's our girl. We can recognize that she is a victim of bad writing and the damsel trope. She's become a bit of un underdog in my mind. Like, treat her better Square! Come on!

The issue with Kairi is that she's just a... nothing sandwich. Kairi is a sweet girl, she likes Sora, she likes to write and makes good luck charms. She's also secretly a princess and therefore has a pure heart and can do nothing wrong. She is a little bit sassy sometimes, but not too much, she cares about her friends and will jump into danger to protect them, but most of the times she is the one who needs to be protected. She's strong, but not too strong, she's sweet and easygoing, and she's boring as hell. In the games at least... She rules in the manga.

In the game she softly lowers a bottled letter to Sora in the ocean, while in the manga she tosses it in there with all her might.

In the game she sort of runs away when Axel tries to kidnap her but in the manga she THROWS HANDS at one of the nobodies who tries to capture her.

Also later in the story when she is kidnapped by Organization XIII, she actually manages to escape for a bit by wiggling through the bars of her prison cell, and then throws hands at Demyx, who is actually trying to help her out. (the manga takes some liberties with the story, it's great you should really read it if you get the chance)

Shiro Amano actually lets her put up a fight and let her actually try to escape by herself when she's captured. Watching this girl be strong and throw hands without hesitation is so so great. Shiro Amano said: Girls should be allowed to go feral once in a while, as a treat. Also I would be amiss if I didn't mention this moment with Olette:

(In the game, Olette awkwardly and weakly puts up a hand to protect Kairi when Axel shows up in Twilight Town to kidnap her, but is just ignored in the most disrespectful way.)

Anyways, back to Kairi. It's sad to say, but her original characterization is just boring. She doesn't really want anything for herself and she doesn't really have a function in the story except to wait around for the boys to pay attention to her or get kidnapped and need to be rescued. And while in recent years the writers are finally exploring her being a keyblade weilder and having her actively participate in the story, they still just can't resist damseling the poor girl, fridging her, and putting her on the sidelines while Sora and Riku take center stage. It's great to see how the fandom's perception of her has changed over the years, people are seeing how Square has been dropping the ball and are actively rooting for Kairi to get more stuff to do. Fans are creating mods of the games to make Kairi playable, are writing fanfiction exploring role reversals where Kairi is the hero and there are several notible fan comics comics that explore her character in a really interesting way.

Anyways, now to get to the actual thing I wanted to talk about: How she's casted in the English version of the games, and how the inconsistent approach to the casting feels... a little disrespectful. Having a consistent voice for a character is something I, and many others really appreciate. It shows a level of care from the creators to bring a consistent group of actors together to bring life to the world. Now, VA's being replaced in the Kingdom Hearts series is not uncommon. The series is known for casting well known actors, and actor availability and budget are problems for which recasting is the solution. For example: Billy Zane got recast as Ansem by Richard Epcar, Brittany Snow by Meaghan Martin as Namine. And then of course there are Christopher Lee, Wayne Allwine, Leonard Nimoy and Rutger Hauer, who had to be recast because they sadly passed away. (RIP, Kings)

Like, all of that makes sense. So here's the confusing situation with Kairi:

Xion and Kairi share a VA in the JP version. This is an intentional creative decision that ties into the lore of Kingdom Hearts. Risa Uchida has consistently voiced these characters in Japanese for years and does a fabulous job.

Sadly this was not the case in the English version. Hayden Panettiere originated the role of Kairi in English, but they got Alyson Stoner to voice Xion when the character debuted in 358/2 days in 2009, which was originally a DS title. Before this they also got Alyson to voice Kairi in the re:Chain of Memories dub in 2008.

These titles were likely smaller budget, which becomes pretty obvious when you look at the overall quality and presentation of the cutscenes. In Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 the dialogue was recorded in English and the japanese lipsynch animation were redone to match the English dialogue. This was not the case in 358/2 days. The dialogue was recorded to match the japanese lip flaps, and the animation was not altered at all to marry the two together. So availability and budget could have been an issue in getting Hayden Panettiere to record for these games. At the time I also considered the possibility that Hayden simply didn't want to do it anymore. It wouldn't have suprised me, because these things happen. Take Brittany Snow for example, after KH2 she got her big break in the Pitch Perfect films, and probably became too busy to come back as Namine. From 2006-2010 Hayden starred in the popular TV series Heroes, which could have impacted her availability and desire to do KH. And with the lower budget for these projects, and where Hayden was at in her carreer at the time, it could stand to reason that she was simply not interested. I should also mention that in this time period Kairi barely got anything to do. When she did show up it would be for a couple of lines of dialogue. As for Xion, 358/2 days on the DS had around 10 or so voiced cutscenes. So the amount of voice work needed for the character was notably smaller compared to one of the numbered games. So the amount of voice work needed, budget, and availability could all have been factors to why Alyson took over for Hayden during this time.

Now don't get me wrong: Alyson is amazing and is, as far as I'm concerned, the definitive voice for Xion. She originated the role and brought so much to the table. She has a wonderful voice, is a talented actress and we have no choice but to stan.

Before long it became apparent that Alyson replacing Hayden permanently was not on the table. In 2010 Hayden reprised her role as Kairi and took over the role of Xion in the secret ending of Birth By Sleep!

So at this point it seemed that the original creative intention for these characters would be honored. Kairi and Xion should have the same voice actress, for lore reasons, and that actress should be Hayden Panetiere, who originated the role.

And wouldn't you know it, in 2012 Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance comes out for the 3DS. It's another hand held title, but the budget is lit. There is lipsynch animation for voiced cutscenes, and the amount of voiced cutscenes is comparable to KH1, KH2 and BBS. Kairi has a few appearances, but has only one line of dialogue. Same goes for Xion, while she does get a line of dialogue near the end of the game. Hayden came in to record for Kairi and Xion and it really seemed like she would be taking over the roles from Alyson.

So obviously, at this point in time it's all but confirmed that Hayden wants to work on KH, and the creative team were making an effort to consistently bring her back as Kairi and Xion. That would be a tough deal for Alyson though, was she gonna get replaced permanently as Xion? Well wait a second and I'll tell you!

So in 2013 Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix was released. It was the first in a series of HD remasters of the Kingdom Hearts series, and the collection included KH1, KH re:Chain of Memories and around 3 hours of newly made cutscenes retelling the story of the DS game 358/2 days. Days originally featured mostly textbox cutscenes. These scenes were remade from scratch and would feature newly recorded voice acting in Japanese and English. Now I don't need to get into it but... The 358/2 days cutscene "movie" is.. not very good. It's boring to watch through, which I think is to blame entirely for the way they approached it. They remade all the cutscenes true to their original appearance, but forgot that there's no action gameplay to break up hours of dialogue scenes. The pacing is bad, the action is non existent, and what's worse is that it doesn't have adjusted lipsynch animation at all. This means the English voice acting was done to match the japanese lip flaps, resulting in awkward pauses and weird deliveries of lines.

The saving grace was that Alyson Stoner was reprising her role as Xion, recording new dialogue for the cutscenes. They also reused her previously recorded dialogue for the DS cutscenes as well. So... I guess Hayden isn't taking over Xion after all? Or perhaps it was easier to get Alyson to come back, so that they could reuse some of the original voice lines from the DS version? I can't imagine that THAT would've been the deciding factor though, because there weren't that many cutscenes from the DS version that would have to be redubbed should they get Hayden back on board. It's hard to say what the reason for this was.

But I was happy to hear Alyson as Xion in the "definitive" version of the 358/2 days story. She has a pleasant voice, and she portrays Xion beautifully in my opinion.

So then KH HD 2.5 Remix comes out in 2014 and features no new Kairi/Xion content. It does feature the Final Mix version of KH2, originally released exclusively in Japan in 2007. This version had new cutscenes, which were now finally dubbed in English for the HD remaster. What's more is they they also reanimated the lip animation to match the new English voice acting! An interesting thing to mention is that at this time, Meaghan Martin had completely taken over the role of Namine, fully replacing Brittany Snow. They luckily didn't choose to redub Brittany's original lines with Meaghan. But it does result in this funny moment where following Roxas' prologue Namine's voice is suddenly different for a single scene.

Anyways, flash forward to 2017, and the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Remix, which included a brand new title by the name of, and hold on to your wigs for this one....

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage-

This was the first look at what a next gen Kingdom Hearts title would be like. You got to play as Aqua and it was wonderful and heartbreaking and cool as hell. At the end of this game a cutscene plays where after a decade Kairi finally gets to be involved in the plot again. She is summoned by Master Yen Sid to begin her training as a keyblade weilder. And she is voiced by.... Alyson Stoner??

A few years later KH3 came out, and Alyson Stoner voices both Kairi and Xion in it. She does a great job. But it's all so confusing.

It seemed so clear that the studio's intent was to get Hayden back as Kairi, and potentially Xion as well. And KH3 was the next big budget numbered title in the franchise. The casting for this game was insane, they got the full cast of Frozen to reprise their roles. Idina Mcfreaking Menzel showed up for Kingdom Hearts! What happened to getting Hayden back? I don't get it at all. This is not to shit on Alyson at all, her Kairi is adorable, and I honestly can't imagine anybody but Alyson Stoner playing Xion. Whenever Hayden picked up the role of Xion I was excited to hear her, but it never felt quite right.

But yeah, this whole situation unfolded in the weirdest of ways. For years it seemed they were absulutely set on getting Hayden to voice these characters. Was she not available to come in for KH3? Well, to answer that question:

Apparently, Hayden wasn't even ASKED to reprise Kairi.

This could of course be a situation of her representatives getting the offer from Square/Disney and choosing not to give it to her. Which happens in Hollywood, and sucks. But there's also a very real chance that Square/Disney didn't even bother reaching out and offering it to her.

Seeing how they decided to recast Hayner, Pence and Olette in KH3, even though their actors are still working as VA's and would have likely loved reprise the roles, I'm leaning to the possibility that they simply didn't bother to reach out to Hayden.

Hell, that's what she said herself.

All in all it's an interesting series of events. It's confusing, and a bit saddening as well. I can speculate why it all happened, but who can really be sure what their reason for replacing Hayden were. Perhaps they decided to do it because they found Alyson to be a better fit for the character? I may be reading into things but there's this interview Hayden did for the release of KH2 were she talks about the recording process and how the voice directors would keep telling her to "raise her voice an octave higher and make it sound more princess like." I gotta say the way she said that irks me..... I love the way Kairi's voice sounds in KH2! Hayden has a beautiful voice, it's a bit lower and more mature sounding than your average cutie girl voice. I would have loved to hear that quality in the character moving forward. Alyson ended up doing a lighter, cuter version of Kairi in KH3. And I do enjoy how Kairi sounds in KH3. Like, it's fine, she sounds very adorable, and it's fine.

But idk man... it feels... weird. I can't help but feel as though they replaced her voice with a younger sounding one, taking away the strength and maturity of the voice that I loved so much. Effectively infantelizing her. And then of course they proceed to damsel her, fridge her, bring her back to life and put her on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

I feel like it all ties together with how the writers see her. She's not really a main character after all, she's not a priority. After years of showing a dedication to keep her voice consistent, it was all just thrown out of the window in the end. It makes me feel like they just didn't care in the end, people would be more upset if Sora or Riku got recast, but they just assumed no one would really care about Kairi. I can't help but care though.

I just wish for a future where Kairi can become a main player in the story, and where she is allowed to grow and mature. Where she isn't used as a carrot to dangle in front of the male lead. Where she isn't kidnapped or killed off as motivation for someone else. Where she can be a girl who is not just pretty and adorable and easy going and sweet, but a girl who is strong, silly, determined and is willing to fight like hell for the things she cares about.

Where she is allowed to interact with the world around her, and discover what her place in it is. Where she can discover what she wants for herself, instead of constantly having to be something for someone else!

IDK, maybe that's too much to ask from a Kingdom Hearts game though, haha.

No, this ain't some refugee from an '80s glam metal band! This is the Japanese tokusatsu hero Shiro Jishi Kamen, aka White Lion Mask, star of the eponymous television series.

Produced by the now-defunct Nippon Denpa Eiga, White Lion Mask ran for 13 episodes from April 4 to June 27, 1973.

Frankly, I dunno where the name White Lion Mask came from, because that's NOT a lion mask, and there's nothing remotely lion-like about this guy. Although he is pretty creepy looking.

I think the "white lion" part comes from the wig, which vaguely resembles the mane of Kaiketsu Lion-Maru, whose popular series had begun broadcasting a year earlier.

Beyond the hair style, both series had other similarities: both were satin Japan around the year 1600; both characters were ordinary men given the ability to transform into powerful warriors; both fought fantastical enemies; both had a woman and little boy as sidekicks; and both rode magical horses that appeared when summoned, although Lion-Maru's had wings and could fly.

White Lion Mask's secret identity was a young samurai named Hyoma Tsurugi. He was tasked by a magistrate, Echizen Ooka (based on a real historical figure), to deal with evil yokai that were terrorizing the countryside.

Tsurugi battles the first group of yokai, the Wolfmen, but is defeated and left for dead in a cave. A supernatural entity decides to gift Tsurugi the ability to transform into the powerful White Lion Mask in order to combat and defeat the yokai.

Infernal Devil, also called Daimoah, ruler of the evil yokai; Hyoma Tsurugi; and White Lion Mask.

White Lion Mask battled a different type of yokai every episode. While he was skilled with a sword and other bladed weapons, the tool he used most often was a long whip. There was also an episode wherein he was able to emit a powerful light that weakened the yokai.

White Lion Mask astride his magic horse, which wears a mask to protect its secret identity.

Unfortunately, White Lion Mask was up against some stiff competition on the television scene with other period jidaigeki tokusatsu shows - Fuun Lion-Maru, Henshin Ninja Arashi, and Demon Hunter Mitsurugi, to name a few - and had a hard time finding an audience. This led to the show's sponsor to drop it, and White Lion Mask stopped broadcasting for a short while.

A new sponsor was found, but the writing was on the wall: White Lion Mask's run was over. The series was cut short, and the storyline was wrapped up in the 13th - and final - episode. White Lion Mask takes on several resurrected yokai that he had defeated earlier in the series, before finally going mano a mano with the big bad, Daimoah the Infernal Devil.

The series finally received a DVD release in Japan in 2003, after several years of various parties haggling over the rights (Nippon Denpa Eiga went bankrupt in 1990). The DVD is currently out of print, but I've managed to find a few episodes on YouTube. They are not subtitled or dubbed, but I hold out hope that some enterprising soul will get around to doing so someday.

thinking about lion's pride also, the superhero AU in which the Galra have invaded Earth but instead of like. what we see in canon its heroes vs villains style battles.

anyways I am just once again rotating Galra spy Keith who gets sent out to determine the true identities of the paladins by direct order of Zarkon. He's not loyal to the Galra, but he's the perfect pawn for them because he still looks very human and has reasons why he can't betray them.

What they don't expect is that he ends up getting mistaken for a runaway and gets his ass saved from the cops by Adam, who invites him to come live with him and his fiancee since it's pretty obvious that this kid's got nowhere else to go. Keith winds up getting pretty attached to these two weird humans... so of course it turns out that Shiro is the black paladin.

Just his luck.

oooou okay thank you for asking. i covered this a little bit in this essay here, but i'll sum up the most important bit from that essay (in relation to this topic):

"Lastly — and this turned out to be less relevant to the essay than I expected, but I do want to go over it a tad — is Shiro’s tie to humanity. I mentioned two important points: Shiro’s connection to mortality makes him the most intimate with his humanity out of all the characters, and he is undoubtedly the flattest character of them all. That is, if you don’t consider his clone to be part of his character.

But I’m begging you to reconsider. Reconsider, perhaps, who the clone is — Haggar had pure access to Shiro for a year, you remember. His thoughts, his dreams, his mannerisms, his priorities, his body. Even him at his most human, his most deranged, his most scared. She had Shiro then. She had Shiro when he had nothing to look forward to. She had Shiro when he hurt his crew to make sure they would live, at direct cost to himself.

She stripped him of his humanity — his connection to his own mortality. She took his illness from him. And who, then, did she return to the team? Who was clone? Shiro, mostly. The clone was happy to play with the team. The clone was clever. The clone believed, fully, that he was Shiro, only he was angrier and meaner, a little, and less capable of shoving down his own pain. Shiro, in the purest form that Haggar can make him, is flawed and self-hating. That is where our love for him comes. so! what does this mean.

shiro, as a character, does not get to choose and form his own identity. first he is the Garrison Poster Boy -- and while he is a pilot, an explorer, and happy to do both of those things, he is uncomfortable with (largely lance's) hero worship. he both a) doesn't believe he deserves it, and b) is not happy in that role. we see it in the "blam blam blam" scene -- he is trapped in the 'hero' role because he is trapped in a role of Perfection, and he is not perfect, and it grates on him. second he is the Champion -- and while he did force himself to be the Champion by injuring the Holts, it is a sacrifice. being a sacrifice is not the same as choosing a role. third, he is the Paladin of the Black Lion (not the Black Paladin, for deeper analysis on my thoughts there please read this essay and maybe this one too honestly) -- he tries to escape that role from the very beginning. i know i keep pushing yall towards the essay but i genuinely do discuss shiro's role in it, but i'll reiterate:

"...from the very beginning, he set up a replacement for himself.

Doesn’t that strike anyone else as odd? I haven’t seen the show in five years, and I don’t plan on rewatching, but I do remember that every moment with Shiro almost had this underlying tension. The closest thing I have to canon off the top of my head is the Handbook (which I had to stop reading because they did everyone SO dirty there, even though some of it was honestly pretty funny), which was released in S2, and even that incredibly early canon talked about Keith replacing Shiro!

From the very beginning, Shiro was planning an out to his role. He knew it was not meant for him. He did the role well, but it was not his to do."

shiro does not want that fucking role. every single second we see him on screen, as Shiro Original, he is shouldering a burden. he is being someone he does not want to be. not to give voltron any credit, but don't you think it's interesting that he, as a character, comes out to the audience as queer when he is...free from those roles? when he is no longer the Garrison Poster Boy (i.e. lance stops the hero worship), no longer the Champion (haggar is defeated), no longer the Paladin of the Black Lion (keith is now the Black Paladin)...we see him come out. we see him, as it is often called, "be true to himself". to me, this signals that he is finally free from playing someone he is not, and interestingly, this came after kuron -- after he maybe got to be something he truly was.

aside from the more abstract analysis, shiro is deeply, deeply traumatized! it is inane to expect him to be the same person he was. why on earth would he have the same patience during/post war as pre-war? he knows now that hesitance gets people killed. if he had hesitated to hurt matt, matt would have died. if he hesitates out on the field, people die. patience yields focus, sure, but he hasn't had time for patience in god knows how long. any patience he has is, if it has not already torn, wearing thin. lance's lightheardness, although important, is bound to make him snap, especially because shiro used to be the lighthearted one -- if he was still the lighthearted one, people would die. on his conscious. his snappiness at lance, while inappropriate and damaging, makes total sense. it comes from a place of a) deep self-hatred/mistrust and b) trauma.

to quote myself again -- "shiro, in the purest form haggar can make him, is flawed and self-hating". take away shiro's roles, take away his masks, take away any of his responsibilities that have shaped his life for him -- who is he? would he be angry (like kuron)? would he be hurting (like kuron)? would he be vulnerable (like kuron)? would he, for the first time, reach out and ask for help (like kuron)?

So... “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is a bop, right?

It’s firmly supplanted “Let It Go” as Disney’s latest ear-worm until the next one comes along but it’s more than just a catchy ballard. It spells out how the Family Madrigal view him as a blight on their family name, especially when they’ve been a pillar of their community.

It also describes how rather than dealing with his problem and maybe helping him through it, they opted to just let him retreat into his room never to be seen again. Better to sweep it under the rug. However, this also proves to be a root in while the house is coming undone.

The message is clear: a family can’t stay as one so long as they can’t talk about their problems with each other. It’s why Mirabel doesn’t get a gift so she can be the outsider looking in.

Where is this going? Well... somebody just finished Voltron: Legendary Defender... and enjoyed it.

Here me out before you scroll away.

I had finished up to Season 7 along with Teen Titans three days before Season 8 dropped. I knew that fandom discourse would be a bear and opted to let the season simmer before I viewed it for myself a few Watch Lists down the road.

What I couldn’t have known was this overwhelming hate for Season 8. I was on Twitter where handles were being altered to include #FuckVoltron and the like. I glimpsed spoilers of what happened in the finale without getting into the dirty details.

Thus I decided to put it off until the heat died down. A whole half decade at that. With Fandom Drama down to near non-existent, I decided to return and engage with Voltron on its own terms from the start. No shipping drama, no expectations for how it should go, no accusations of problematic behavior and no Purple Lion conspiracies.

And... I liked it. I highly encourage those scared off by the drama or felt Season 8 did it dirty to give it a(nother) shot. It deserves a full on renaissance the way Twilight got.

Why? (spoilers ahead).

I was sold on Allura and Lance’s relationship. I loved how he went from being a flirt to genuinely admiring Allura as a leader and Paladin, encouraging her in the season 4 finale without trying to get anything out of it.

I liked the tonal shift around Season 7 where the ultimate Golion homage is made with the Space Explorers coming home to a war ravaged Earth.

I liked how human Lotor and Honerva were as villains coming after Zarkon. I can see why there’s a whole ass conspiracy framed around him actually being in Season 8. Also them taking that “Your mother was an Altean bitch” like and running with it for Hagger was brilliant.

Keith becoming the Black Paladin after Kuron’s reveal was well done and felt weirdly natural in retrospect. He feels like he can’t measure up to Shiro and learns more discipline from

Allura sacrificing herself to restore all realities felt a lot better with the knowledge of spoilers. It helps that the ending went with a more noble feel than angsty, showing how the Paladins strove make sure that her actions set an example for years to come.

I love that they got creative with the multiple alien species and kept the Alteans from being just humans in space like in the original. It really took inspiration from Vehicle Voltron with more aliens in the mix.

Shiro the Hero, as Crazy Coran put it. What can I say except that he’s the kind of character you call a Mary Sue if he wasn’t a guy. Always calm, always perservering, putting the mission first and being a pillar the team can lean on. He even creates his own Voltron out of the Atlas

Honestly, the whole Adam thing isn’t something I fully blame the writers given the producers pushing back. Mind you, I feel like Keith would’ve made a good endgame pairing with him if they had even out their ages when they first meet, both as teenage proteges.

Studio Mir was amazing, especially with the space battles. Honestly, if Robotech managed to make a comeback, I could totally see them being tapped to match the classic Anime style.

So... yeah. Voltron good actually.

And now, I just feel compelled to sing the praises of one of Kingdom Hearts' greatest heroes:

SHIRO. MOTHERFUCKING. AMANO!

The more time passes, the more amazed I am by this man. He's had a hero's journey IRL when it comes to his place in the franchise: jumping at the call but being inexperienced and screwing up, reaching his lowest point before rising, dealing with great adversity only to come out of it stronger than ever, and becoming a beloved hero to many who continues to do good.

KH1 was his first manga adaptation, and for the most part it's your by-the-numbers comic book adaptation of a story from a non-comic book medium, not especially good or especially bad. But Amano showed three weaknesses: he mischaracterized the KH-original characters (Sora, Kairi, Riku and Ansem all start out on point, but once Destiny Islands is destroyed this changes drastically: Sora turns into a spastic moron, Kairi into a bland bystander, Riku into an emotionless tool, and Ansem into an over-the-top eeeevil lunatic who actually gets himself killed without any contribution from Sora, Donald and Goofy!), he sucked at action scenes leading to many iconic battles from the game being straight-up left out altogether, and his gag manga inclinations caused him to turn scenes that should be serious / emotional into jokes.

CoM was his aforementioned lowest point. All those flaws were not only still there, but worse, turning what was once a dark, mysterious and psychological story into an unfunny farce.

Disgraceful. For a good while, I actually disliked Shiro Amano due to this.

But then came the redemption: KH2. The Prologue section of this manga is masterfully done, possibly even better than the game's version. The pace is less sluggish, the events less irritatingly obtuse, and the humor actually works to the benefit of the story's seriousness - because so much of the goofy humor is between Roxas, Hayner, Pence and Olette, you build even more of an emotional connection to them and the tragedy of Roxas learning the truth about his life hits that much harder when it transpires. When Sora returns, Amano is briefly tempted by his old inclinations and kind of backslides, with the resulting trips to Hollow Bastion, Beast's Castle, Land of Dragons and Olympus Coliseum suffering as a result. They aren't quite as insulting as the CoM manga, but still bad. However, true to hero's journey form this period of temptation and backsliding passes and only reinforces Amano's commitment to improving and actually balancing his humor and adaptational changes with drama, emotional sincerity and faithfulness to the game. From Disney Castle on, he returns to quality output. There are still mistakes here and there, but on the whole the manga is an enjoyable one. From the characterization to the action scenes to the tonal balance, Amano had improved.

And then came the hiatus between its first half and second half, during which he worked on the 358/2 Days manga. Take what I said about KH2's Prologue, then apply it x10, and you get this manga, where the writing and pacing is improved from its game counterpart and the humor is rich, well-timed and actively feeds into the drama and tragedy of the story rather than detract from it. To make the contrast to how far he's come most apparent, remember how in the CoM manga where there's an omake short that makes a complete joke out of the Riku Replica, originally one of the story's most tragic characters? Well in this manga, we get an omake short about a Dusk, which starts out hilarious but then ends up being absolutely heart-breaking. It makes me legit sad over a goddman DUSK. Now that takes real talent!

What's also apparent with the Days and KH2 mangas is that Amano had come to shine in a way that Tetsuya Nomura absolutely does not: respect for his female leads. Kairi, Namine and Xion in these mangas aren't primarily sources of support for male characters or there to make male characters feel things above all else; they are their own distinct individuals with vivid personalities and clear character arcs. Even Olette shines brighter than in the games!

Once Amano made it back to the KH2 manga for its second half, he was firing on all cylinders. Again, not everything was perfect, but much like the game itself the narrative flaws were not enough to overshadow the many more narrative strengths. And when the manga finally concluded after so many years, Amano confirmed that it truly was the end. He would not be adapting other KH games. And given that the rest of the KH series never got better than where KH2 ended, this was absolutely for the best. I could very easily imagine the Olympian gods making a constellation in Amano's image, as he had become a true hero.

However, oh no! He got persuaded into adapting KH3 when it came out in 2019! This is going to ruin everything, right? WRONG! The KH3 manga has not only been a shining example of how far Shiro Amano has come, but also a masterclass in demonstrating how acutely aware of the game's problems he is and the lengths he is willing to go to fix them. For example...

- He opens the manga with a direct adaptation of the game's opening scene with the Boy in Black and Boy in White in front of the chess board followed by the FMV intro. By doing things in this strange way, Amano invites the possibility of this being an alternate, diverging timeline from the prior manga continuity so that its ending remains untouched should you desire it to be. Almost as if the Boy in Black and Boy in White reside in some higher plane of existence and the KH3 manga is the "game" that they're playing, so it's not to be taken too seriously.

- The whole opening that semi-recaps stuff leading into KH3 is played off as a joke, and given that the stuff in question was stupid (such as the Mark of Mastery exam through sleeping worlds and Sora failing his Mark of Mastery exam on bullshit grounds), this is appreciated.

- He actually makes Maleficent and Pete more competent; rather than have Maleficent dismiss Pete's idea to take Sora out while he's still weak, he has both of them agree that they needn't bother with Sora because his weakness will lead him to being destroyed by the Xehanorganization anyway. They can find the black box while their foes fight each other.

- 0.2 BBS is adapted after the Olympus visit in a way that also recaps the most important points of BBS and includes stronger characterization for Aqua, Terra and Ventus. Stupid things like Mickey losing his shirt are avoided, and there is actually clarification on how Mickey could not have gone into the Realm of Darkness to save Aqua earlier and all the time between KH1 and KH2 he was building up his strength to obtain the Power of Waking so that he could as he promised to, making him come off so much better than he did in the games.

-Coded is not referenced, ever.

- The "Roxas and Namine ceased to exist when they merged with Sora and Kairi" retcon is completely avoided, with the manga instead saying they do exist within them as was originally the case in KH2. Giving Roxas his own body is less correcting some injustice or "hurt" and more part because he's needed for the battle against Xehanort and part because Sora's just a nice guy like that, wanting to provide his friends with all the basic comforts.

- Xehanort's master plan retcon is also discarded! Here it's said that Ansem and Xemnas' plans remained their own, as they should be, and that since Master Xehanort's return he's embarked on "a new plan" once joined by his time-traveling younger self, who never mentions needing Ansem for his time-traveling which keeps things consistent with how KH2 depicted time travel as simply a magical phenomenon that didn't need complicated rules.

- Not only are Riku and Kairi way more in-character than they were in the game, but most shockingly Axel is too! He actually feels like Axel, character flaws and all, not dumbass Lea!

- Toy Box, Corona and Arendelle, while still filler, are all adapted faithfully, which is nice.

- Various alterations are made for the better: the Riku Replica stuff is kept to an incredibly bare minimum, Ansem the Wise first appears in the scene where he returns to Radiant Garden meaning him still being alive is more of a legit twist plus he never meets Aqua only for there to be no pay-off and the dumbass plotline with him and Xehanort's Heartless is left out, the "secret Keyblade legacy" stuff with Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia and Larxene is cut, the second Kairi and Axel scene is no more, and the big reconvening at Yen Sid's Tower scene and the fallout montage is massively reworked into something far better written and paced.

All this plus maintaining his balance of humor and sincerity, including using the former to support the latter, and even correcting previous flaws (holy shit, Marluxia, Larxene, Vexen...they're all completely in-character now!) If Amano keeps this momentum going and actually manages to make something good out of the notoriously disappointing finale in the Keyblade Graveyard, then he will officially have given us the best version of KH3's story in existence.

Tl;dr: nothing but respect for Shiro Amano, who is a better writer than Nomura will ever be.

Part 2:

The students all sat down, and you turned back to Shiro while Aizawa was speaking to them.

Shiro leant against the counter, giving you a disapproving look.

“Aren’t you interested in meeting your fellow classmates?”

“I mean is it really relevant? I’ll only be studying here to control my quirk, I can’t really have friends can I?”

He chuckled a little bit, patting your head a few times before he went back to cooking your dinner for you.

“You’re a teenager, you can have friends if you want them. Plus it’ll be good to be friends with the next generation of heroes, I’ll improve you status as the years go on.”

“I don’t want to use people like that…”

“No (Y/N) you’re not understanding. You’re not using them, it’s just going to be a perk to knowing them. You being friends is more just you getting to live a normal life.”

Furrowing your brows a little at him, you seemed just as confused.

“You’ve spent most of your time back home isolated from the rest of the world, only really interesting with other royal families when there was a need, then when you started your royal duties you didn’t have time for that. Go have fun, play games, that sort of thing stuff, just be mindful the media will still be watching your every move.”

“Oh right, that makes more sense.”

Reaching into the pocket of his jacket you took a candy bar, turning back to the students.

Shiro turned around, taking the candy bar from you.

“No.”

You frowned a little, but you waved as they all looked over at you.

“It’s nice to meet you!” The beamed.

“Thank you, it’s nice to meet you all as well. I can’t stay long, I’ll meet you all properly on Monday.”

Turning around, you took your bowl from Shiro, happily running back to your room while he cleaned up.

You weekend was spent sorting out your room and doing some final paper work, you had a uniform for your training sessions, but since you weren’t aiming to be a hero you didn’t get a hero costume.

You also hadn’t been given an official school uniform, since the only classes you would really be attending were the training sessions, you had no need for the theory classes, but you could attend them if you wanted too.

When Monday came around, you dressed in your normal clothes.

Shiro looked at you as you came out and he sighed.

“Come here kiddo.”

You padded over and he adjusted your jacket, brushing it down, getting out the creases for you.

“They were all hung up, how did you get them so messy?”

“I dropped them a few times.” You grinned.

He chuckled a little bit, shaking his head at you, Arthur came up holding your bag in his shoulder.

“Everybody has gone to their classes, we’ve been asked to come meet some of the other teachers.”

“Oh right, I forgot about that. Are we late?”

“No, there was no timing, just when we got there to head to the staff room.”

You nodded your head, leading the way with the pair of them following you.

Making your way up to the school, you made your way through the hallways, following the directions that you were given.

Standing in front of the door, you knocked and clasped your hands in front of you, waiting for somebody to open it.

When it was opened you stood in front of your home room teacher.

“Right, come in.”

He stepped aside, letting the three of you walked in.

The teachers that were in there looked up and stopped what they were doing.

Aizawa quickly introduced them to you.

“Good morning, I’m (Y/N) (L/N), thank you for allowing me to train my quirk at your school.”

You offered them all a bow, then stood up, gesturing to the two behind you.

“These are Shiro and Arthur, my personal assistants and body guards.”

The two did the same thing.

“Oh you’re so adorable!” Midnight gushed.

She went to rush forward, but was stopped by Shiro and Arthur who raised the swords in front of you.

Quickly she stepped back, giving a nervous smile, and you gestured for them to put their weapons down.

“They’re serious.”

“You have to understand it’s for my own protection. As the young heir to a royal family I’d easily be a target for anybody looking for power or money. You may be heroes but they take their jobs seriously.”

Midnight nodded her head in understanding.

“It’s admirable.” She smiled.

“Yes, and I’m sure you’ll find this school suitable for training your quirk to the extent you need.” Cementoss said.

You nodded your head, giving them all a bright smile.

“I hope so! I’m not sure how training a quirk works, I’ve never really had to think about it, for the most part my quirk was always easy to control, but it’s law of our country that the heir has to be fully trained before taking the spot.”

“You’ll observe how it’s done with 1-A, then tomorrow you’ll take part. Let’s go.” Aizawa said.

You happily nodded and followed behind him, your hands clasped behind you as you walked.

You briefly stopped at the locker rooms so you could lock your bag in a locker before carrying on to the training grounds.

There was an observation room where you were taken.

“That’s All Might and Recovery Girl.”

Aizawa left after that, and you walked over to the screen, looking at the students who were training for their teacher to return.

“Are you a new student?” All Might asked.

“This is (Y/N). I’m Shiro, that’s Arthur.” Shiro spoke.

“Oh, the young royal I remember now, sorry. How are you finding it here?” He asked.

You looked up at him, smiling.

“I enjoy it, it’s very different to my normal routine. It must be exciting to train the new heroes.”

“It’s definitely rewarding, and I see a lot of promising quirks, and I’ve heard yours is quite interesting as well, I hope to see it in action one day.” He smiled.

You pointed to the two men sitting down next to you.

“You are. These guys are ghosts, but they’ve been on earth a lot longer than others I’ve summoned, so their spiritual bodies have gotten stronger, they’re able to do anything a normal person could.”

“Amazing, and this doesn’t exhaust your quirk?”

“No sir, my quirk is what brings them forth and gets rid of them. I’m not really creating anything, I’m just summoning from the beyond. So, if I summon a bad one, I can send them back straight away.”

“Good and bad spirits?”

“Well, yeah. Just like we’ve got good and bad people their spirits become good or bad. I can only summon spirits of warriors though, nobody else.”

He nodded his head in understanding and you turned back to the screen, watching as the students trained, studying what they’d do.

It was mostly just pushing their quirks past their limits, trying to get used to it.

“I want to do that.” You said.

All Might chuckled a little bit.

“Come along the, I’ll escort you there.”

You cheered, getting up to run after him, stumbling over your own two feet, and Arthur caught you while laughing.

“Stumbling isn’t very regal of you your highness.” He mocked.

“Shut up or I’ll make you go away.”

“You wouldn’t.” He grinned.

“Shiro!” You whined.

Shiro sighed, walking over and he stepped between the pair of you, mumbling about being children.

You were led outside by All Might, and he led you over to Aizawa who turned to look at you.

“You shouldn’t be out here.”

“Please! I want to do what they’re doing!”

“It’s not very regal like to beg either.”

You spun around, pointing at Arthur.

“Time out!”

He vanished and you turned back around, grinning at your teacher.

“Please sir! I swear I’ll be good and follow all the rules!”

“No.”

“Why?!”

“Because you’re not in uniform and I said no.”

You frowned, then slightly grinned a little bit.

Holding your hand out, your eyes turned black as you summoned a few spirits, then you turned to Aizawa.

“See! I can train my quirk too!”

You let the spirits go, and released your quirk, and you bounced on the balls of your feet.

“No. Go back to the observation room.”

You sighed heavily, nodding your head.

You walked back inside and looked to Shiro.

“I want to go to my room, I have some paper work to do.”

“Are you sulking because you got told to go away?”

“No…”

He chuckled a little bit.

“Can Arthur come out of his time out?”

“Yeah…”

Arthur was immediately back, holding your bag and he placed his hand on your head.

“Come on kid, lighten up.”

You huffed, storming away.

Heading back to the dorms you went back to your room, sitting at your desk as you went through some papers.

You set the unimportant ones aside, trying to focus on getting on getting the more important ones sighed off first.

“Shiro why do I have papers for reconstruction?”

“Oh, let me have a look.”

You handed them over, letting him read them as you went to sealing all the others, handing them to Arthur so he could deliver them back home.

Shiro walked back over, setting the papers down in your desk.

There was a knock on your door, and you called from whoever it was to come in, and watched as your home room teacher walked through.

“They’re asking for permission to fix the broken wing of the castle.”

You snapped your gaze to Shiro.

“Tell them to stop asking.”

“Of course.”

He took the papers and vanished, and you turned to Aizawa, smiling at him.

“Hi sir.”

“Where did he go?”

“Oh, as a ghost they can move between the spaces of different places, as long as they’ve been there before anyway, so they’ve gone back home to deliver some papers for me.”

He nodded his head, and you stood up.

“Let’s go.”

“Okay.”

You trailed after him, making your way outside and he turned around to face you.

“How many spirits can you summon?”

“Uh, I think the limit right now is at ten. Technically less if you count the fact Shiro and Arthur are ghosts. The more I summon the weaker they are, the less the stronger.”

“That’s why you only keep two?”

“Yes sir, it allows them to be at their strongest, but even with other ghosts because they’ve been around the longest they’re still stronger then others, since they’ve spent more time in the living realm.”

“First we’ll have to test your physical strength, then see the true limitations of your quirk before we can come up with an action plan.”

You nodded your head in excitement, happily agreeing to this because it meant you could finally start training your quirk.

“Go get your gym uniform on.”

“Yes sir!”

You quickly ran away and he sighed heavily, standing there idly as he waited for you to come back.

Training the next generation of heroes was exhausting enough, now he had to train you on a whole different schedule

It’s angsty Keith hours guys.

Keith’s eyes were locked on the bathroom mirror, purple-black irises stared back.

Everything made sense now; his entire life had shifted revealing things he’d always known but pushed down. Truths he’d locked in a box and tossed in the ocean, hoping pitifully that the tide wouldn’t come crashing back in.

But here he was fully aware of why he was different.

Keith was galra. And he was a monster.

His mouth tasted like iron, abnormally strong fingernails dug into the sink with a horrific screech, he couldn’t breathe.

Keith desperately scanned his mirror image for a sign of humanity. The scars on his jaw, each dark mole, lines underneath his eyes. But it wasn’t enough to cover the sharp teeth, unnatural eyes, the fire burning within him.

He could feel his knees beginning to shake, the armor on his legs rattling slightly.

‘Why did it have to be now? Couldn’t this have waited until after the war, when I’m not needed anymore. Then I wouldn’t be a liability. Then at least I could go live on some desolate planet by myself so no one would have to think about me again.’

His thoughts were racing faster with each minute, tripping over each other in desperation to be fully formed.

‘Oh god, Shiro’s gotta hate me now, the galra ruined his life, I’m one of them. What if they lock me up? They wouldn’t be wrong, I’m a monster. I’ve only ever hurt people…. But I can’t do that again!’

Memories of dark closets and broken bones still haunted him. Something warm began to well up in his eyes. ‘Tears. Wait no.. monsters don’t cry. Humans cry, and I’m not human.’

Suddenly Keith pushed away from the counter, no longer able to look at his monstrous reflection. His back hit the wall and his legs gave out, leaving him to slide down the wall with little grace. His sharp teeth dug into his bottom lip drawing blood. He barely registered the pain.

‘I don’t deserve to call myself a Paladin Of Voltron, I’m a flaw. A demon masquerading as a hero.’

His shaking hands began to fumble with his armor, desperate to rid himself of the markings of a paladin. His thick nails caught in the grooves of the plating on one knee with a terrible screech. He threw off the knee guard and began frantically removing the rest. By the time he’d gotten down to his undersuit Keith was sobbing uncontrollably.

Trembling hands began to scratch at his face, unable to feel the pain of breaking skin. Warm blood started to poke at his fingertips and mix with the streams coming from his eyes. His purple eyes. His galran eyes.

‘I hate this.’

He curled tighter into himself, as if waiting for pain, to be punished for his very existence. There was only silence, and somehow that made everything worse.
