Seeing Twitter users recommending the People Make Games documentary as a good way to get insight on the issue is so….
I know, I’m always extremely disappointed whenever I come across someone who thinks it’s the end all be all explanations regarding the Studio ZA/UM situation.
Recommending that video always comes with a heavy caveat from me that the person needs to stop around the 40 minute mark since the interviewer shows a very clear bias that’s unbecoming of a journalist.
Regardless, now that more people are finding out about these layoffs, which might take out members of the studio that have been there since the beginning, it could finally help smack some sense into those Twitter users that actually thought, FOR SOME REASON, Rostov, Kurvitz, and Hindpere were lying for shits and giggles rather than seeing what's ACTUALLY going on which is that the investors have a very obvious agenda against the real wronged party. Hopefully this'll also open their eyes to how the People Make Games video fed into this twisted narrative that Kurvitz was somehow at fault/responsible for the theft of his own IP, but that might be asking too much from their concrete brains. Here's hoping though!

do you have any plans for snaptooth or flywhisker, ever since I saw that fake map I've fallen in love w flywhisker lmao
You know, for the longest time I've been planning to have Snaptooth and Flywhisker be adopted kits of Toadstep and Lionblaze, but I'm writing an SE rework for Nightcloud right now and I have a temptation.
I found a good moment to send off Snapstorm, the best friend of Brushblaze, as a complication of a boar hunt gone wrong. It's right around the time that Brushblaze's kits are being born, and something feels odd about the fact he didn't name any of his kits after someone who was by his side for his entire life. SO I'm thinking about shuffling Snaptooth over to HIS litter.
Which leaves Flywhisker over in ThunderClan.
Lionblaze is the adopted father of Dovewing and Ivypool... and his terrible parenting caused Dovewing to leave ThunderClan, and Ivypool to be permanently traumatized. He breaks up his false mateship with Cinderheart to go be with the cat he really loves, Toadstep, and Flywhisker is adopted after being found abandoned.
Lionblaze's destruction of the ThunderClan family tree has been undone; so now he would only have three children. Ivy, Dove, and Fly. I like it, because Fly is growing up with all the expectations of being Firekin, but also holding the knowledge that her loving father... wasn't always the best, to her older sisters.
It would be cool if Fly was always a little bit of a rebel, and found a really good friend in WindClan. I could work her into the conflict of TBC better too, being accused of being in a HalfClan relationship when the truth is that Snaptooth is more like a brother to her. Then, of course, have them leave the Clans together.
Brushblaze's litter would be Snaptooth, Smokehaze, and Galerunner... and so, Galerunner would be left alone after his brother leaves permanently with Flywhisker.
But I'm still unsure. It's a big change, because I'd been planning for Fly and Snap to remain siblings in BB. But it does seem to work better, thinking about it...

au where volo works at walmart :) initially conceptualized by @curiositykilledtheradiostar
[image id: a series of drawings depicting Volo from pokemon legends arceus as a walmart employee. In each drawing he wears his usual yellow and blue cap, now with the walmart spark on the front, a yellow tshirt, blue vest, and blue jeans. In the first drawing, he's bent forward slightly, an expression of extreme anger/frustration/murder on his face as he clutches his box cutter so hard it shakes. Next to it, text says: "team lead just asked him to run all of housewares + domestics alone". There is an asterisk next to "team lead" which at the bottom elaborates, "nice corporate name for boss". In the second and third drawings, it shows Volo overly happily waving to a customer, saying very cheerfully, "thank you for shopping at pokemart!" In the next drawing, his entire demeanor changes, his hand falling down and his face going completely flat. He looks very tired and annoyed with the customer. In the final drawing, he stands holding a box outstretched away from himself, visibly disgusted with it. The box is dripping some sort of awful green goo. He holds his other hand out in front of him, flicking off great globs of that awful green goo from his hand. His jeans are noticeably dirty, and text reads, "4th spill of the night". End id.]

My favourite thing ever is the way Ashley gets Leon to smile. Honest to god, his most sincere and genuine smiles are the ones he's given Ashley.
Now if she could just get him to laugh, that would be something completely unprecedented.
Sorry, it just occurred to me literally today that Leon never laughs -- even one time -- at any point in this series. Other protagonists, at the very least, laugh at how stupid a villain's plan is sometimes. Not this guy. Not our Leon. He's too dead inside. Bro doesn't even laugh at OG Salazar, who may as well have circus music playing in the background any time he's on screen. We stan a depressed king.
I was actually thinking about this a little last night -- again, in the context of the whole "Ashley is Leon's anchor to reality/his road back to himself" thing that I've talked about before, while also paired with the shitpost-but-not I made the other day about Leon's sense of self-worth and identity.
Leon drifts further and further away from himself as the series goes on, and not only does he not smile anymore, he becomes downright sullen. There was a time -- a significant period of time, actually -- where you could have said that one of Leon's defining traits was his optimism. That stops being true by the time of Damnation; Leon's optimism is replaced by hollow machismo in a poor attempt at a coping mechanism in that movie -- and, by the time of Vendetta, even the machismo has fallen to the wayside. By the age of 37, Leon has completely and utterly embraced the creeping sense of despair that's been hounding his steps for years.
That has never been who he was. But it's who he is now.
And, as soon as I had that thought, something occurred to me that I somehow had not noticed in the 18 years since RE4 OG has been out:
Ashley is a foil for Ada.
That wasn't her intended purpose when she was created, but it's the narrative role that she's come to inhabit as the series has gone on and Leon's character has progressed without her.
In OG canon, Leon thinks of Ada as a part of himself that he can't let go. But the longer he clings to her, the less of himself he becomes.
And the last person to actually see him as his true self, lifted up from the despair, and without hiding (fully) behind a veneer of machismo was Ashley -- someone he did let go. Even in OG, he is very genuine and very sincere with his affection for her (platonic or not) in a way he really isn't with anyone after RE4.
So, when you point out that his smiles for her are genuine, there's really something to that. He trusts Ashley with a piece of his heart that he doesn't show to anyone else post-RE2. Like, literally, the last person who probably saw him like that was Sherry, and we already know that Leon estranges himself from her almost completely after they're taken into CIA custody following RE2.
And the Remakes make this way more obvious than the OG games did, too -- not only because of the RE engine being great for facial expressions, but because of the way the script changes make certain parts of Leon's character more noticeable. If you go straight from RE2make to RE4make, the entire opening sequence involving the cops and the hunting lodge is absolutely horrifying. If I was a new fan coming in from RE2make to RE4make, I would be knocked on my ass and going "This is not my Leon. This is not the sweet boy that I know. What the fuck happened to him?"
RE4make does such a good job with sharply juxtaposing who Leon was with who he is now. By the time of RE4make, Leon is so beaten down and tired and closed off and angry and, honestly, scared -- that he almost kind of feels like a completely different character. Except, he's not a different character. He's still Leon -- just, Leon with his blinders ripped off and his heart broken.
And, we know that he's still Leon, because every once in a while, the sweet boy that we know comes back. It's infrequent, and it's only for a few moments, but he's still in there. And it always -- every single time -- is only ever Ashley that pulls it out of him.
And Ada? She forces him to retreat again immediately, and he locks himself back up tight.
So, when Ashley gets permanently erased from Leon's life and Ada becomes more of a permanent fixture in it, that sweet boy from RE2 disappears, and he's replaced entirely by the version of Leon that's heartbroken and angry all the time -- because Ada is a constant reminder of all that he's lost, whereas Ashley, as his only true success story, was a hopeful reminder of all that he could potentially be.
I honestly don't think that Capcom even realizes that this is how they've written Leon's character. I don't think it was intentional for Leon's smile to fade with Ashley's absence in his life.
But that's just kind of how it happened.

It happens in a split second.
They’re running- they’re going to make it to the portal. It’s right there. They just need a little more time.
A sound thunders across the burning air and crashes like waves into the rocky ground. The dust swells up around them. Will hears Mike coughing as it tries to choke them both- filling their lungs and stealing what little air they keep.
It’s the fourth strike. They don’t have any time left. But they’re so close.
They’re so fucking close.
“Mike,” Will says, grabbing his hand. “We- we’ve got to go- c’mon- we can still make it.”
Mike looks at him and a calmness Will can’t place drags across his face.
“Yeah, we can make it. Let’s go.”
“Together.”
“Yeah. Together.”
And they’re running again, hand in hand pulling each other along when the rocks fall away into the growing chasms beneath their feel. They’re going to make it- Will reaches for the portal.
Mike lets go of his hand.
And he’s shoved through the portal.
For a moment, he sees Mike’s face, resigned to his fate, but looking at Will like he’s worth everything.
“I love you.”
And he’s gone.
Will hits the floor hard. There are people around him but he doesn’t care. He needs to get back- he needs to get back through- someone’s holding him back as he’s screaming. And screaming.
And screaming.
“Your okay, you got out. You got out, Will,” someone says.
Will begins to burn.
“No.”
“Yes, you got out. You’re right here,” someone else says.
Something spreads from his heart, painful and overwhelming and new.
“It’s not okay.”
Into his lungs.
“We know kid-.”
Down his spine.
“It’s not fucking okay!”
And into every vein, right into his fingertips.
“I’m not letting him die,” Will whispers.
There’s a hum in his chest and his head and his veins. He closes his eyes and lets himself feel it, deep into the core of his being.
His mom. Flashes and memories and warmth and more crayons than he can count. And more love than he can bear as she yells at doctors and does everything she can to keep him safe.
“Will- what’s happening?”
“Fuck!”
“Holy shit, holy fucking shit!-“
Jonathan and reassurances and safety and a conversation in the back of a pizzeria. His brother, who will always be his brother, no matter what.
He burns. And burns and burns.
“Will…”
Mike. On the swings, in the basement playing D&D with the party, holding his drawings to his chest and acting like they’re the most precious things in the world. Holding his hand even as a cruel being seeps into his mind.
Pulling him away from the cracks eating away at the ground. A hand in his.
Telling him he loves him, and not giving him a chance to say it back. Like there was a world that could ever exist that Will let him go that easy.
Will screams.
And this time, he’s going to make it count.
He steps towards the portal, opening again, reversing itself.
Giving them more time.
Mike is on the other side, wide eyed as a clawed hand reaches for him. Eyes rolling back and raising up from the ground.
Will steps through the portal. Flames flicker across his vision. He looks at Vecna.
“Don’t fucking touch him.”
And he burns.
———
Once again, Mike’s fine. I don’t know why I keep writing him in dangerous situation. It just feels… logical.
