One hundred and fourteen days is a really long time to spend away from the person you love. A really fucking long time. It’s almost a third of the year, a whole season you could spend apart. And in your case, the season was autumn.
Harry had left during the last weeks of summer and you’d spent the entirety of autumn without him. Even communicating was a little difficult with him constantly changing timezones and countries. The first few weeks were hard. Really, really hard. You and Harry were seemingly still in that honeymoon phase when he was boarding his plane, even after seven months of officially being a couple you two were inseparable and couldn’t get enough of each other. And then all of a sudden he was just gone.
It was a weird thing to feel, it was something kind of a like a break up, except not that all at the same time. Your heart was left feeling empty when he left, but it wasn’t broken in a way that you knew he was gone forever. But you did know it was going to be a long time.
On day twenty-two, you felt a little change. You were perking up again, replying to messages from friends, adding to your Instagram story again. The longing was still there but that morning you awoke early and embarked on doing a massive clean out of your apartment on your days off from work and after everything was re-organised, you felt refreshed.
Day twenty-nine was when Harry noticed that change. He often felt bad when he would call you on a high from singing in front of thousands of his fans and you were cooped up in your one bedroom place. It was never your intention for him to feel bad, you loved that he got to do what he loved. It made you happy to see him happy you just wished you could be with him to experience the same happiness. That was until you realised you’d found happiness in other places. Suddenly you realised, your life had existed before Harry, and honestly, you kind of loved your life. Your apartment only seemed small because you’d been staying in lavish penthouses on weekends away. And your apartment had kind of begun become a pit where you would disregard clothes in a hurry to pack a new suitcase for the next little trip he would take you on. Without Harry there, you began to love the things about your apartment you did before and do the things you used to do before your boyfriend was someone who could be instantly recognised by millions of people.
Harry had Facetimed you and you didn’t answer as quickly as you normally did. You weren’t just sitting and waiting for him to call. Once you answered you could barely hear him. You were out with your friends, your smile was bright but honestly, you barely paid him any attention.
It was a quick call, one that had Harry left a bit perplexed. He was happy you were happy, but he couldn’t ignore the insulted way he felt that he didn’t have the full attention off of you that he had become so accustomed to receiving.
Day forty-four. He cried. Really cried because of how much he missed you. He’d had a really hard day with the media blasting headlines everywhere about him and a model he wasn’t even sure if he had met before. You felt for him, and listened as he vented and promised you none of it was true. You told him he didn’t have to reassure you, you knew the truth. Of course you believed him, you trusted his loyalty to you. However, you’d been so distracted by the good things happening for you, you hadn’t thought to check the TMZ YouTube or even search Harry Styles on twitter to see what was going on. You didn’t even have a clue any of this was being said. It wasn’t really an issue for you at all, until Harry had brought it up, the only reason it had an affect on you was because it had an affect on him.
Day seventy-six you were both so happy. So, so, so happy. Harry had just played to his biggest crowd yet and you’d been offered a promotion at work. Both of your lives were riding high in their own rights. They just weren’t two lives together at this point.
Day one hundred and thirteen at 11:02pm, he showed up at your front door. He’d managed to find a private jet and fly home early. He surprised you. And fuck, your heart flew high. You were so in love with that boy and as he kissed you for the first time in a long time, you melted right into him again. The two of you made love all night. You called in sick to work the next day and the two of you spent the entire day together just laughing, kissing and touching each other. You couldn’t get enough of him, he couldn’t get enough of you.
Day one hundred and thirty-two, it was well and truly winter now, the days were cold and the nights were freezing but you had Harry at night to keep you warm, now. Then again, your blankets did just as good of a job, too.
What?
You weren’t that surprised, though, that wasn’t the first time you had a thought like that.
He had been home for nineteen days now, almost three full weeks. And fuck, did you love him, but fuck, did you want just a little room to breathe.
Three days ago, on day sixteen of him being home was when you really felt yourself getting annoyed. One of your favourite shows came back with a new season while Harry was away and you’d made a ritual every week of putting on a face mask and watching it in peace.
Harry thought he would watch it with you, and you didn’t mind. You were excited, at least at first you were. Then he started asking questions. From there it was a fast drop and everything he did started to annoy you. Eventually you told him to shut up and leave you alone. He went to bed, shocked.
The next day you didn’t talk about it, you woke up earlier than usual because you had an early start at work. You didn’t tell Harry.
Back to day one hundred and thirty-two, nineteen days into Harry being back and you came home from work to see him asleep on your little pink couch. Another time you would have found him so cute and endearing, but right now you felt like you couldn’t escape him. You went to your bedroom and his suitcase was opened, his clothes messily lingering around it. You went to your bathroom, he’d left the toothpaste opened. Again. Fuck you hated that.
Harry was staying with you, and when you said he could, you thought it would be fine. You thought it would be better than fine, you’d thought you would love it. He had sold his place before he left, the market was a good and his real estate agent told him he’d make a huge profit. He did, but now he was living in your little apartment with you and the place you once loved, then loathed and then loved again you were starting to loathe once more.
Or were you not loving Harry being there?
“Fuck this.” You murmured to yourself before you quickly got changed out of the clothes you wore to work and into something more comfortable before you grabbed your keys and left again.
It was 1:52am - or one hour and fifty-two minutes of day one hundred and thirty-three, twenty days of Harry being back - when you answered his call drunk.
“’lo boyfriend.”
“Oh my god, why haven’t you answered your phone?” He was relieved when you answered, after several attempts to contact you failed, he was starting to get desperate.
“I did right now?”
“You couldn’t answer any earlier?”
“Nah.” It was nice to have him on the phone, it reminded you of when he was away and when you missed him, you only thought about how much he loved you.
“Nah? What do you mean nah?” The word sounded so strange in his accent, you giggled. “What’re you laughing for?”
“You’re so pretty on the phone.”
“You’re really quite drunk. Did you drive?”
“Yeah.”
“Shit, you got a ride home?”
“You still at my place?”
“Yeah, want me to get you?”
“Nah, want you gone when I get home.”
“What?” All that wine had given you liquid courage and while right now you weren’t feeling remorseful over what you had said, Harry felt that blow, he felt it hard. “Y/N?”
“You heard me. I just..give me some room to breathe.”
“Where is this coming from?”
“Don’t know.” You did know, he was crowding in on the life you had found once again while he was away.
“Do, do you want to break up?” He went quiet when he asked that, as if he was afraid to ask the question. You were being brutally honest in this moment and he wasn’t sure what other kind of swings he was going to take from you right now.
“No, fuck no.” Your reply was instant, he was relieved again. “Love you so much, Harry, really. Never wan’ end it.”
“I don’t understand, then, what’s the issue?”
“I just, like, my place is a little too small for the both of us, you know?”
“I can get us a bigger place-”
“I don’t want a bigger place, I like my place.”
“What do you want, then? I'd give you the whole world if I could.” He was on the verge of tears, his eyes were welling up and you couldn’t see him but you could imagine it pretty well.
“Baby, s’okay. I don’t want the world, just want... a little space. Space. I want space, not the world.”
“You don’t want me here?”
“Not at the moment, I want a little me time, again.”
“We were apart for so long.”
“Yeah.. and remember how good we were those first couple’a weeks. Go away again. Give me a chance to miss you.” You really thought you couldn’t have been more clear, but when Harry didn’t respond, you felt guilt creeping in. “It’s not a bad thing, Harry. I love you and I want you forever and all that, but shit, usually I love it when you stay, I do. I just- I’m on another kind of page right now. There’s nothing wrong with some me time.”
“Okay.” His reply was so simple, so quick you couldn’t at all get a hint at what he would be doing on the other end. “Are you coming back here tonight?”
“Nah, going to stay with a friend. Be there tomorrow sometime.”
“Text me when you’re there? Wanna know you’re safe.”
“I will.”
“Goodnight, Y/N.”
“Night...I love you.” You were so sure of yourself when you’d been telling Harry exactly how you’d been feeling but now you were terrified of not hearing those words returned.
“I love you, too.” He hung up then.
Your emotions were all over the place as you stared at the picture that was your lockscreen background. Taken on day one hundred and seventeen, four days of him being home, he was laying on the couch with his arms lifted and bent and covering part of his face, but you could see his smile. His beautiful smile that made you smile, you were behind the camera and had been straddling his hips. You thought back to that moment of post lazy morning sex and he looked so gorgeous you couldn’t help but to take a photo, which he tried to avoid, but his smile was perfect. You swore that right now, you could hear the exact laugh he did on that perfect day. You wanted to feel like that again.
Fuck.
Did you make a mistake?
No, you were sure to get back to that moment, you needed the space. Right?
Right now, you couldn’t think about it, you weren’t going to let yourself have that internal battle. Instead, you went back inside the bar with your friends to have one last glass of wine and a hungover version of you on day one hundred and thirty-three could face the consequences.

Kim Taehyung // Royalty
A/N: I’m not gonna lie...the character’s brother was supposed to be Prince Seokjin...and then I got 4k words in and realized that it’d be weird for a Kim to like a Kim...,,,,,so I changed it to Yoongi...but he’s a dank prince too. I also wanted the first prince to be Mingyu instead of Baehyun because uhhh I’m a hardcore Mingyu s*an:-( and then u kno what?? I was like “a Kim w a Kim??? NO!” which is dumb bc I didn’t realize the reader x Tae thing until later hahaha
Summary: For being the Princess of Seoul, you sure do take quite a lot of vacations with Head Guard Kim Taehyung. You really should be careful--he might fall in love with you.
Genre: Fluff, angst
Tumblr media
Dear Head Guard Kim,
Thank you for accompanying me on my trip to Jeju this past week. I appreciate it very much. It was kind of you to volunteer to go, considering Prince Yoongi was the one to go overseas for a month.
To repay you for your gratitude, I have gifted you with a new guard uniform to wear (the fabric is more comfortable and this is one-of-a-kind) as well as a few vacation days. Since I learned quite a bit about you during our excursion, I sent your favorite chocolates as well.
There is no need to stress about getting me anything in return. I would just like to thank you.
   Until next time,
       Princess Y/N
P.S. I got your flowers. They are beautiful and sitting at my mirror.
~
Dearest Princess Y/N,
Thank you for the gifts, I am very grateful to know someone with a kind and gracious heart like you.
Also, I am glad you like the flowers. I was not sure if you would like roses or had a particular taste, but I distinctly remember seeing you admiring the tulips and daisies in Jeju. That’s why I sent the flowers.
When I told your brother, Prince Yoongi, that I would accompany you on your trip to Jeju, he insisted that I go with you rather than sulk in Brazil. He claimed that it would be more enjoyable than spending hours upon hours in meetings. He also pointed out that he is capable of defending himself.
Truthfully, I had quite a bit of fun in Jeju. I’m glad that I had gone.
   Your loyal guard,
       Kim Taehyung
~
“Welcome back home,” you greet Yoongi. He smiles widely at you. Brazil must have treated him well because his skin is flourishing with color and his hair looks like a lighter shade of brown. Perhaps he dyed it. Your mother does not look too happy to see it.
Yoongi pulls you into a big hug. “Little sister, it has only been a month, but you look so much older,” he says to you happily.
“Jeju makes you a new person,” you joke as you pull away from him. He pats your head and you can tell he’s missed you a lot.
“Princess Y/N can tell you all about her adventure later. We have meetings we must get to,” your mother cuts in, handing Yoongi his polished crown and pulling him down the corridor. Your father sends you a small frown as he follows them, knowing that you really wanted to catch up with Yoongi.
As soon as they disappear down a hallway, you turn to your guards. “Jung and Jeon, you are dismissed,” you say to them with a forced smile on your face.
The boy to you before heading off to some random place in the castle. You never think much of it when they disappear. They aren’t your problems once you dismiss them. As long as they aren’t meddling, then you really have no problem with them.
You head out of the castle and into the garden. The weather is very nice today, but that’s primarily because summer is in full swing. Though, it was raining heavily yesterday.
In no time, you find yourself sitting at a chess table in the middle of a hedge maze. When you were younger, you and Yoongi would sit here and play chess. Usually, you beat him, but if he was having a good day, Yoongi would beat you in three minutes. It has been a few months since you both sat here.
Yes, someday he is going to be the king and you’re going to be married off to another prince, but that doesn’t mean that you two can’t be close. When you leave, you still want to keep close ties with Seoul. Plus, Yoongi is practically your best friend -- it’d kill you to not be close with him anymore.
When Yoongi becomes king, he gets the honor of choosing your suitor. You trust that he’ll choose the right person by putting a lot of time and effort into it -- and it better not be that uptight Prince Yugyeom, who always has a stick up his rear whenever you see him.
“Good afternoon, Princess Y/N. Funny seeing you here,” Taehyung says to you, startling you. He gives you a deep bow and smiles happily. He isn’t wearing his guard uniform. Instead, he wears a white button-down and black slacks. You assume that he is off the clock today. That must mean Namjoon and Seokjin are in command.
You nod your head in response to his bow. “Hello, Taehyung. I haven’t seen you in a while. Have you been guarding mother?” you ask, urging him to take a seat by motioning to the chair across from you.
He walks over to the chair and slides onto it. “Yes, I watch her during the day and then spend five hours in the corridor at night. Prince Yoongi is going to take me off corridor duty so that I can sleep,” he replies like he’s hit the jackpot.
“I didn’t realize you’d been losing sleep.” You frown at him. You could’ve done something about this sooner. “I apologize. I understand that Mother can be a pain.”
Taehyung shakes his head. “No, no. I’m more than happy to serve as a guard for your family, Princess. I understand that my job may involve sleep deprivation.” To assure you that he’s actually okay with this, he gives you a great big smile.
You’ve known Kim Taehyung for a few years now. He came to the castle at age eighteen because the former head guard saw Taehyung’s athletic record and grades. You only got to see him from afar when you’d pass by the castle’s training wing, but when he got promoted to Head Guard, you saw him around your mother or Yoongi.
Before he was acquainted with other guards, he was really quiet. Because of that, you assumed that he was really shy. Whenever he saw you, he’d blush furiously and turn away. He couldn’t even bring up any words to say to you. Since he’s used to seeing you now, he doesn’t blush anymore. You kind of miss the days where you could make Kim Taehyung blush -- it makes him seem more human. The guards are too good at hiding their feelings, so they seem like robots.
“Are you not on duty today?” you ask, initiating chess by moving a pawn forward two spaces.
The brown-haired boy shakes his head and moves a pawn of his as well. “No, I’m not. Prince Yoongi told me to take off for today because he wanted to catch up. It appears that I won’t be seeing him anytime soon,” he answers before you take the pawn that he moved. “I should’ve thought that move through…”
You laugh at him and give him a sympathetic smile. “That’s a shame. At least you get to spend time with someone in the royal family. Unfortunately, I’m not as cool as Yoongi, but I’m not in any meetings for the next two weeks,” you chime as he moves another pawn, leaving a bishop of his wide open.
Taehyung shrugs. “You may not be the prince, but I like you both equally.” When you move your knight, he starts talking again. “Since you have the next week free, why not go to Busan for a while? I think you’d enjoy it.”
“I suppose I should,” you answer him quietly. “Would you like to accompany me?”
He thinks about it for a moment, pondering over whether it’s a good idea. “I would be happy to. I will have to run it by your father and the prince first. Then I’d have to pack a few uniforms.”
“It’s a hassle to go as a princess, Taehyung. I want to go as just Y/N, an ordinary person,” you point out. “I wouldn’t want to make a scene, so please refrain from bringing a guard uniform. Wear what you’re wearing now; it’s nice.”
Taehyung bites his lip. “I’m not so sure that’s a good idea, Princess. Think of all the potential danger you could face.”
You look Taehyung in the eyes. Underneath the summer sun, they look like cinnamon irises, glistening brightly. “I suppose I can ask Guard Park Jimin because he is from Busan,” you say, almost like it’s a threat, but your delivery was just wrong. “I’m not sure he’d be as attentive as you.”
He sighs, running a hand through his brown hair before tugging on the hem of his white button-down. You can sense how nervous he is, thinking that he might make the wrong choice and threaten his position as Head Guard. The only reason you asked him is because if he gets caught, Yoongi would let him off the hook.
After all, Yoongi would do anything for Taehyung. They’ve been best friends for so long.
“I will go,” Taehyung says, covering his face like he’s done something terribly wrong. Though, you do understand what he feels because he works his hardest to make sure no one is in danger. By doing this, you’re putting yourself in danger and unintentionally forcing Taehyung to be even more alert.
You smile at Taehyung and stand up. “Checkmate,” you hum before striding off.
~
Dear Head Guard Kim,
I have not seen you in two days, but do remember that we depart for Busan in the morning. Please remember that I do not want to make it a scene when we arrive. No limousines, no carriages, no paparazzi, nothing.
For the next couple of days, we are Taehyung and Y/N. We are normal tourists. We will enjoy our stay in Busan and make the most of our trip.
You have my permission to engage in Head Guard Mode when you deem an area unsafe or suspect something strange. I trust that you are capable of sensing danger, considering your position in our Royal Guard. That being said, make decisions wisely, and I will follow suit.
If by chance the King and Queen ask about Busan, let them know that I was in meetings with a few CEOs, but it typically went awry. If they ask for details, say that I didn’t mention much because its failures made it a sensitive topic for me.
You may not want to lie to my parents because you are very loyal, so if you feel uncomfortable telling false truths, then you may tell them that they can ask me instead. I will be more than happy to cover.
If they find out that I did not do any business in Busan, I will take the blame. After all, I dragged you into this and you do not deserve to be punished for my decisions. I will not be punished as harshly as you, so please do not step up if we are caught.
Yoongi is aware of this, and he gives us the “okay.”
After reading this, burn it in order to retain secrecy.
   Until next time,
       Princess Y/N
~
Dearest Princess Y/N,
   Message received and eliminated.
For the next few days, I will be on alert. Thank you for your concern. My only wish for you is that you have the time of your life.
       Your loyal guard,
       Kim Taehyung
~
You arrive in Busan so early that the sun is still rising. There is a slight bit of bustling around the city, and you enjoy how quiet it is. Both you and Taehyung are wearing casual clothes. Taehyung brought an extra white shirt for you to wear to look normal in the meantime. It’s a nice change from the dresses, but you’re practically wearing the same outfit as Taehyung right now.
“It feels nice to know people aren’t following me with cameras right now,” you say to Taehyung, adjusting your ponytail and sliding a hat over it. The sun isn’t blinding your eyes because of your sunglasses, but you’re also not wearing makeup. Without all the glamorous clothes and jewelry, you look normal.
Taehyung smiles as he walks next to you. You can tell that he’s on high alert, but he’s playing it off like he’s curious and taking in the scenery. “I agree. So, where to first, Princess?” he asks you, shoving his hands into his pocket.
“Please call me Y/N,” you insist, not wanting to give away your identity.
“I apologize. I’m just so used to calling you Princess. So, Y/N, where to?” There’s a sense of discomfort in his tone. All his life, he’s known you as Princess or Your Highness. Calling you anything else is just
“Igidae Park!” you cheer like a child. If your parents were to see you right now, they’d scold you for your childishness. This is one of the only times you may ever be allowed alone, so you’re definitely going to make the most of it.
He sighs and looks at you. “You do know that we have to call a cab, right? Igidae is more than just a walk from here.”
Although it’s merely the morning, you nod and follow Taehyung so that he can get a cab. He manages to get one easily, which is surprising to you. He opens the car door for you so that you can climb in, but first, he examines it to make sure that there’s no threat inside. Then, he smiles at you so that you know that it’s safe to go in. After, he gets inside and closes the door.
“Where’d you like to go?” the driver asks.
“Igidae Park please,” you answer calmly, barely managing to contain your excitement. This is the most independence you’ve gotten, ever.
The taxi driver nods and you’re on your way.
When you arrive, Taehyung opens the door for you and extends his hand to help you out of the car. Instinctively, you take it and make your way out. He thanks the driver before closing the door.
“Let’s walk, shall we?” you say to Taehyung after a minute of silence.
He nods, looking at the ground. “Yes, Y/N.”
You nudge him with your elbow, causing him to look at you with a confused look. You furrow your brows and shake your head at him. “Is it so hard for you to treat me like a friend? We’ve known each other for years now, Taehyung.”
“I have yet to adjust to being your friend, Y/N,” he answers as you both begin your walk. There’s a small breeze that sends shivers throughout your body, and you hug yourself in order to warm up. “You’re on a different level of the social hierarchy than I am.”
You stare at the trees at whistle at you, rustling loudly. “Ah, I see. It’s nothing I would fret about, truthfully. I think very highly of you.”
Immediately, he blushes, but he looks away from you so that you can see his face when he’s all red. He runs a hand through his chocolate brown hair and wipes his face with his sleeve as if his nose is runny. After doing all that, Taehyung looks back at you, and his face is no longer flushed.
“Thank you,” he says rather awkwardly.
“Anyway Taehyung, tell me about yourself. Do you have any pets? I understand that you reside in the castle, but when you go home to your parents, do you have any pets?”
His face lights up immediately at the mention of animals. “I actually got a dog recently! His name is Yeontan and he has cute little angry brows. He stays with my parents since the King prohibits animals in the castle.”
“Aw, Yeontan!” you exclaim. “Yoongi was showing me pictures of Yeontan! I didn’t realize he belonged to you.”
“Yes! Tan is so cute, isn’t he?”
The way he is so passionate about his pet is cute. Because he’s a guard, you forget that he has feelings. After all, you’re slightly convinced they’re all manufactured in buildings, considering their lack of emotions.
And somehow, seeing Taehyung smile warms your heart a little.
“Ah yes, Tan is very cute,” you say, kicking a stray pebble far away from you. “When do you get to see him?”
“Early in the morning, before I’m required to get ready for guard duty, I take a trip to my parents’ house to see them...and Yeontan,” he explains, smiling as he stares at the cotton candy skies. “They’re always so proud of me--my parents are. Though, I’m never home because of my job...and I feel a little guilty for that.”
You nod, thinking about what to say. You can’t exactly relate to him, but it’d be rude of you to talk him down after he’s begun to open up to you.
“Not that I don’t like working for your family!” Taehyung shouts, startling you and causing your heart to pound out of your chest. “I’m absolutely blessed to work for people like you.”
“Taehyung, you don’t always have to express your love for my family and me,” you explain to him with a calm voice despite the fact that he’s just scared the wits out of you. “We’re depriving you of well-deserved family time--I know. You deserve it just as much as we do. Remember, we’re friends. You don’t have to worship the ground I walk on.”
He slouches in response, staring at his feet as you both arrive at a cliff that overlooks the ocean. The breeze blows through his hair and he doesn’t fix it, causing it to look rather disheveled. “I feel as if I’m not doing my job as a son. I love my family and this job is important to us. Sometimes, it takes a toll on me. As much as I appreciate Yoongi coming to me on my birthday with a small piece of cake with a candle, it’ll never compare to birthdays with my family.”
“Have you tried taking days off on your birthday?” you ask curiously, staring at the waves that crash against the cliff.
“I have, but usually your mother has errands for the New Year that she wants me to run,” he answers.
“Ah, so were you born on December 31st?” you ask.
He shakes his head. “December 30th.”
“I see,” you hum. Your voice is so quiet that it almost blends in with the waves. “This year, because I have nothing better to do, I am going on a day trip on December 30th. You are obligated to accompany me.”
Taehyung nearly chokes on his spit. “Y/N, you really don’t have to take the day off because of my birthday! Where would you go, after all? Everywhere is quite busy at the end of the year, so there’d be nowhere to go.”
You shrug. “I’ll go to wherever your parents live. I’ll require your assistance because unfortunately, I’m not sure I’d know the way.”
He looks at you in all seriousness. His eyes are watering, but you’re not sure if it’s because of you or the wind’s getting in his eyes. “Thank you so much. Your heart’s truly made of gold, Y/N.”
You smile and pat his back. A stray tear slides down his face. “Don’t thank me for something you deserve.”
He turns his head away from you and covers his hands over his face. His body shakes as he silently weeps, holding back the noises. You rub his back and pat his shoulders. Since Taehyung remains turned away, you figure that he doesn’t want you to see him like this.
“The ocean’s really pretty today, Kim Taehyung. It’d be a real shame if you missed it,” you say with a soothing voice, hoping that it’ll get him to relax.
After you speak, he moves his hands from his face and wipes away the tears with the sleeve of his jacket. “You’re right. Though, I’m no longer interested in the ocean.”
You nod and remove your hand from his back. “Is that so? Then we should really get going. I’d hate to bore you,” you reply, turning around to head back. “Have you had breakfast?”
Taehyung shakes his head, sniffling still. “No.”
“Let’s go eat. It’s on me.” You grin at him, winking before running off. Your sudden actions take Taehyung by surprise and he darts after you.
~
The next week went by quickly. You did a lot of sightseeing and you both got really close. You learned a lot more about each other and even had a few drinks with some locals.
It was the best time you had in a while. The last time you had this much fun was...at least five years ago. Plus, Taehyung showed you a cat cafe, which introduced you to a world of cats. They were all so nice and relaxing.
While you were admiring the cats and showering them with kisses, Taehyung stared at you. To him, it felt like the whole world became nothing and it was just you two. His heart was pounding out of his chest and the sight of you took his breath away. The way your hair looked like a waterfall underneath your sunshine yellow cap while your eyes practically sparkled almost convinced him that you were some sort of ethereal being. He almost wanted to say something. Then again, you both are too different.
Plus, you were too distracted by the cats to notice Taehyung noticing you.
Though, while Taehyung was playing with the cats, your heart was buzzing too. You didn’t think much of it, but it felt as if mist has been cleared from your heart. Taehyung was someone you felt comfortable with--and not the way you felt comfortable with Yoongi or the other guards. In a way, Taehyung made you feel vulnerable, but you’re too naive to realize that this actually means something.
And now here you are, entering the castle. Your parents greet you with large smiles and Yoongi envelopes you in a hug.
“Princess Y/N, we missed you!” Yoongi cheers as he spins you around. “How was the trip?”
“Lots of boring meetings,” you lie, though Yoongi already knows about your fun-filled journey. “Taehyung did keep me company though.”
“I’m glad you got along well with my best friend,” Yoongi says to you. “Still, he’s my friend.”
You laugh as he lets go of you. “I think you may have to get used to sharing.”
Taehyung stands politely before you and your family and bows. He’s wearing his guard uniform, meaning he is now on the job and cannot be informal. If he does break character, he might lose his job—no questions asked. Not even Yoongi could save him.
“The Head Guard is not your friend, Prince Yoongi. He is your guard and your guard only,” your mother points out, stern as she could ever be.
Upon hearing this, you look back at Taehyung and smile to assure him that you are friends regardless of your mother’s words. He doesn’t respond, knowing that if he reacts, he may get in trouble. You know he saw the smile though.
“Princess, as you know, Prince Yoongi’s coronation is two months away,” your father pipes in.
They’ve decided to make Yoongi’s coronation happen before your father dies because well frankly, your father’s getting old now. His health is declining, but very slowly. He claims that he wants to see his son get his crown before he dies, so there is that excuse as well. By doing this, he’s breaking tradition, but your father has never really been one for tradition. Honestly, he wants to take a three-month long vacation in Cancun.
“Correct,” you answer.
“His first task as king is to find the perfect suitor for you. Now, we have a list in the making. The first candidate is arriving tonight. I expect you to give him a grand tour of our exquisite castle,” your father says.
You want to argue, but you don’t. You don’t want to leave the castle to marry some prince. You don’t want to be someone else’s accessory. You’re much better than this, but if your father says so, then you must.
“I understand,” you say before bowing to your father. “When is he arriving?”
“In about...twenty-five minutes,” your father answers, looking at his watch.
“Father, did you really invite him now knowing that I’d arrive around this time? I’m not presentable enough for a suitor!”
“The more time we bicker the less time we have to get ready,” Yoongi says as he steers you away from the scene. “Don’t worry—I have a royal blue dress laid out for you and it’s long so your shoes don’t matter.”
“You’re a lifesaver, Yoongi.” You let out a long breath. “But what about hair?”
“Well, I think it looks fine as is. I can braid it if you want.”
“I’m going to look like an idiot.”
“Actually, I’ve gotten pretty good at braiding. I think I can braid while one of the stylists fix your makeup,” Yoongi points out as he pushes you into your bedroom where your stylist is. “Let’s make you pretty...uh, prettier than you are right now.”
You scowl at your brother as you take a seat. He manages to do a really nice job of braiding, and your makeup artist makes you look like you hadn’t woken up thirty minutes prior. Your earrings are small studs, but you still look marvelous nonetheless.
You slide into your dress and throw on some white heels that you find underneath your bed. Yoongi rushes you out and forces you back into the corridor with five minutes to spare. However, your suitor is already there, waiting for you.
You bow to him and he reciprocates the bow, smiling broadly at you. You’ve met him before at a few galas, but never formally. He’s a prince, but you’re not sure where he’s from. He’s good looking—that’s for sure.
“Good afternoon, Prince,” you say, flashing a cunning smile as you were taught. “You’re early.”
He nods and kisses your hand. “Greetings, Princess Y/N. I am Prince Baekhyun. How are you on this beautiful day?”
“Quite fine, thank you for asking. How are you?” you ask, looking around for a guard that might be suitable enough to accompany you on this castle tour. You spot Head Guard Kim Taehyung in the corner of the room, biting back a smile. You mouth a ‘help me’ and he walks over to you, keeping his distance. If he’s the one monitoring you two, you’ll be comfortable.
“I’m doing wonderfully now that I’ve seen you,” he says. Part of you wants to know if he sees you as only an item and another part of you wants to just accept the compliment—so you do.
“Prince Baekhyun,” you say, “your name rolls off the tongue quite well.”
“Thank you, Princess.”
“Now, shall we begin the tour? This right here is the corridor.”
And for the next hour and a half, you spent your time showing Prince Byun Baekhyun around. When Yoongi saw him, he mouthed to you ‘not bad’ before greeting the prince himself.
After Prince Baekhyun left, you were heading to your bedroom, where the chef had left your lunch (the dining hall is occupied by a lunch your mother is having with a few important people).
As you make your way back, Head Guard Kim catches up with you. You look at him and frown while undoing your braid. “I think this is— pardon my French—stupide,” you say to Taehyung, rolling your eyes.
“Why is that? You seemed to be getting along with Prince Baekhyun rather well,” Taehyung replies. “He was also kind enough to compliment something about you every five minutes.”
“It seems like a routine,” you respond. “I don’t care how long their list of suitors is, but I need someone interesting. Yes, Prince Baekhyun was amusing, but to what extent? If he stopped complimenting me, what would be left?”
“Valid point, Princess,” Head Guard Kim says to you. “Prince Yoongi will make the right decision though.”
“I agree, Taehyung,” you mumble. “I wish things here were more like Busan...”
“Full of meetings?” Taehyung asks, trying to cover up the fact that you weren’t doing anything relevant that week.
“Yes,” you mutter as you arrive at your bedroom. “Head Guard Kim, I have a gift for you. I’ll go in and retrieve it.”
Taehyung shakes his head. “I’m currently working, Princess Y/N. Is it okay if I grab it just before midnight? That is when I am off-duty.”
You nod and bid adieu to Taehyung. He smiles at you until you close the door.
That’s when his heart began to calm down.
You spend the next few hours talking to Yoongi about his coronation so that you know what to plan for. He briefly mentions a ball, saying that afterward, people of higher social status are allowed to attend this ball and the theme is black and white. It’s later at night, and there is a festival right after the coronation. Yoongi is required to be at both events, meaning you are as well.
That means you had to consult with designers to get a dress made for every event that day.
After talking to Yoongi, you spent a couple more hours discussing with designers what ideal outfits would be for each event. At first, you were thinking a dress, but the designers convinced you that a pantsuit would be suitable so that you could participate in the fun. They also managed to get the general outline for the dress and intend on making a prototype before carrying on.
Once you were done speaking to them, you spoke to your parents about Prince Baekhyun. They were not very happy to hear that you do not see a future with him, however, they were not discouraged because your list has “plenty of ideal men,” as your mother put it. Then, you mentioned taking a trip on December 30th, and they just nodded and didn’t think much of it. They were too distracted by the fact that their next few weeks will be quite busy.
You finish your meetings right a little after midnight and rush back to your room, hoping that you didn’t miss Taehyung stopping by. When you arrive, you see Taehyung standing at your door, still wearing his guard uniform. He’s raising his hand as if to knock but stops before his knuckles rap against the white wood. Why is he hesitating?
“I’m sorry for being late,” you apologize, quickly bowing to him.
He jumps when you speak, but bows right when you bow. “Oh, Princess Y/N! Don’t worry, I just got here as well,” he says, face flushing a deep red color.
You open the door to your bedroom. Your window stretches from the floor to the ceiling and the moonlight that enters through it is enough to light up the room. Taehyung’s gift is in a neatly wrapped box in the corner of your room, so you scurry over to grab it.
“Hey, get in here!” you call to Taehyung, who is awestruck by how large and elegant your room is. Not everyone can have a room with a large window which leads to a balcony that overlooks Seoul. “Oh, and close the door! Someone might hear us!”
When Taehyung hears your voice, he snaps out of his trance and rushes over to you after quietly closing the grandeur door to your room. He catches up with you and you bring the gift box up to his line of sight.
“This is for you! Yoongi put it together since I had limited time but I supplied what’s inside!” you say to him excitedly. “Open it!”
“This is rather large, don’t you think?” he asks you. “I feel guilty when you buy things for me, Princess.”
You frown and shake your head. “Be quiet, Kim Taehyung, and open the box!”
When he opens the box, two envelopes are revealed. He takes both envelopes and gives you a strange look. “You put these two small things in that huge box?” he asks, amused by your antics.
“I simply like irony,” you say. “Now, open the square envelope!” you demand, pointing to the envelope in his right hand.
“I will, I will,” he laughs and sets the other one down. Inside, several pictures of your trip to Busan. There are lots of pictures of Taehyung, but also quite of few of you with Taehyung in the background, looking grumpy because you had run away from him. There was some scenery as well, and some of the pictures had Taehyung’s head in the corner. “Oh goodness, so this is what you did with the pictures.”
“Yes! They’re gorgeous pictures, and you look really happy!” You point at a picture of Taehyung at a restaurant staring at his food. “Look! Your smile is so big!”
“This is so thoughtful of you, Princess. Did you not want to keep the pictures for yourself?” he asks, tucking the pictures back into the envelope.
You shake your head and point at your head. “All of the pictures are in my mind. Keeping the pictures physically is more likely to be found by someone and I’d hate to put your job in peril like that.”
“I’m assuming the pictures of our trip is just another secret that’s between us?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.
You nod and pick up the other envelope. “Now, this one.” Taehyung opens it and pulls out a few sheets of paper. He holds it up in the light to read it, but you stop him. You pull him over to the window and push it open so that you both can get onto the balcony. “You can probably read it better out here,” you say, leaning against the concrete.
Taehyung reads the letter silently and tears slip down his cheek, falling onto the paper.
You don’t have to ask him what the letter contains because you know what it is. It’s a letter from his parents and siblings. In it, they tell how much they love him and how proud of him they are. They are happy to have seen him come so far and he makes them so proud.
By the time he finishes the letter, you’re both sitting against the castle wall. Taehyung’s face is wet from crying and your arm is around him, pulling him close to you so that you can comfort him. The fabric of your dress is getting damp from his tears, but you don’t mind. Perhaps your stylist might, but you can always play it off.
“How in the world did you manage to get that?” he asks as he wipes away tears with the sleeve of his uniform.
“Yoongi did some snooping and took a quick trip with Head Guard Kim Seokjin,” you answer, rubbing his back. “It was my idea, but Yoongi did everything. Think of it as a ‘thank you’ from us.”
You both were on the balcony for two hours, talking about everything. Most of the conversation was in hushed whispers, but it didn’t affect the quality. Taehyung eventually took his head off of you, but you both were still within a close proximity.
At two o’clock in the morning, it was time for Taehyung to go. He stands up and you smile at him as you follow him to the door to your room.
He turns to you and takes a deep breath. “Princess,” he says with a shaky breath.
“Yes?” you ask with your hand on the doorknob.
“Y/N,” he says your name slowly. He acts as if it’s his last time ever saying your name. “Princess Y/N, I think...that I love you.”
“Taehyung,” you whisper to him, “are you sure you should be saying this right now? It’s past midnight, you may be out of your mind.”
“This is one thing that I’m positive about,” he answers you. “Ever since I met you, you made my heart race. You always look ethereal, and I don’t know how I could have held in feelings like this for five years now. You always treat people as if they are your superiors and you have a heart of pure gold. Princess, I didn’t want to admit this to myself because you’re going to marry a prince of some majestic country and I’ll still be here. No matter how much I love you, I’ll never be able to end up with you. It’s a little bittersweet, don’t you think?”
You stare at him, absolutely dumbfounded by his words. You don’t know if you have feelings for anyone because you’ve always known that you’re going to marry a prince, so you’ve always tucked your feelings away and ignored them. You don’t even know if you have feelings for Taehyung, but even if you did, you’d have to disregard them.
“I think you really should get some rest, Kim Taehyung,” you say quietly, opening the door to your bedroom. “Goodnight. You are dismissed.”
Taehyung doesn’t argue. Instead, he bows to you and makes his way out. You close the door behind him and close your eyes as your heart races out of your chest.
~
Dear Head Guard Kim Taehyung,
We haven’t spoken to each other in a month. It’s a shame that you are avoiding me because I miss you quite a bit.
And also, I’ve thought about what you said. Perhaps I love you too.
   Princess Y/N
~
Dearest Princess Y/N,
   Message received and eliminated.
   Sincerely,
       Head Guard Kim Taehyung
~
A month later, you’re at Yoongi’s coronation ball, hiding from all of the suitors that continually swarm you. You’ve danced with every single one two times already, and they keep fighting for your attention. Frankly, you’re tired of it.
It’s Yoongi’s day--he’s king now. Why can’t everyone bother him instead?
You sit in the castle’s library, leaning against a bookshelf. Your beautiful black and white dress is getting messier by the minute. Well, perhaps not, considering how often the library is cleaned. At least it’s quiet in here, whereas all the noise in the ballroom was getting to your head.
“Aish,” you mutter to yourself, beginning to pace back and forth, “Yoongi, you better make a good decision when it comes to whom I marry.”
“I believe his current choice is Prince Mingyu,” a voice says from behind the large bookshelf. “I think he’s rather suitable, don’t you think?”
You peek your head around the corner and see a brown-haired boy dressed in a gray tuxedo. It’s much different from his guard uniform, and just the sight of him makes your heart race. He smiles at you and putting one hand in his pockets.
“Kim Taehyung,” you say, almost like the sight of him takes your breath away, “it’s been quite some time, has it not?”
He walks towards you, holding a book in his free hand. “Truly. You look beautiful tonight, Princess.”
“As do you,” you say. “You know, Taehyung, we did not leave off on good terms. If I recall correctly, you didn’t care much for my last message.”
Taehyung nods, remembering what your message said in vivid detail. “That’s true. I believe that’s because you’re a princess and I am below you. This would never work out.”
You cross your arms and raise your head. “And still, somehow, I would choose you out of all of those princes presented before me,” you say. Your voice is loud and confidence is laced in every last syllable.
“Princess, with all due respect, you sure are an idiot,” Taehyung says as he finally reaches you. He looks so beautiful up close. “And so am I, for loving you.”
“I know.”
“It’s a shame that fate played us as our pawns, huh?” he asks, taking hold of your hand. “I never really was good at chess.”
“It’s okay,” you murmur, “I lose sometimes too.”
~
Oh, but that isn’t the end of your story. In fact, that was the beginning because it wasn’t just you two in the library that night. King Yoongi was in there too, listening in. He never told you this, though.
When the day came to choose your husband, you sat in a meeting with King Yoongi, your parents, and a lawyer, funnily enough. Head Guards Taehyung, Namjoon, and Seokjin were present as well, making sure no one was to break in. Yoongi stared at the long list with a black pen in hand and crossed off every name from the list.
“Princess Y/N is not marrying anyone from this list,” Yoongi announced.
“No, she must,” your mother said, frustrated with your brother. “Our last wish as King and Queen was that Y/N would marry a man from the list.”
Yoongi nodded and held up his pen. “I’m aware, Mother.” He took his pen and wrote on the bottom of his list. “And because of that, I am adding to the list.”
“Who’s your choice?” your father questions, more curious than upset.
Yoongi lifts the list up to show you all. He has a great big gummy smile and he looks so proud. “Kim Taehyung!” he exclaims, pointing at Taehyung, across the room with his pen.
“Well, I can’t say this goes against tradition because you all know how I felt about tradition,” your father says.
“Then it’s settled!” Yoongi says, smiling at your mother, who looks like she’s just about to erupt. “Head Guard Taehyung shall be His Royal Highness Taehyung. I suppose we must find a new Head Guard to replace him.”
Taehyung is covering his face, hoping that your mother won’t scold him. This wasn’t something he was in on, and this took him completely by surprise. Your mother looks back at you as if you had something to say about this. Well, to be fair, you did have something to say about it, but you weren’t going to.
You put so much trust in Yoongi, and now you know it wasn’t for nothing. Just when you thought you’d lost the game, Yoongi managed to help you win.
Checkmate, fate.

I hope you girls who seem done with everything give the SC charity event or S3 promos a chance. When this happened before I pointed out then that it's not quite fair to yourself to end on a high MM note/low shipper note. I know that it's much much more than that now. A cumulative of things where you have had enough. But I still think that is an unfair advantage to antis/the side of you that's had enough where it's easier to see only the negative vs the side where you have a clearer view that..p1
(before I answer this: I haven’t been receiving all the parts of multi part asks for like a week now. I noticed last night I have a couple multi part asks where I only have one part so if you’ve sent me asks with more than one part I probably never got the rest of your messages. That being said, I never got part 2 of this but I want to answer it anyway and maybe you can come back with the other parts, anon.)
Had you sent this 6 months ago, I probably would have said yes absolutely I’ll give it one more shot. The problem is, myself and many others have given this production and Sam and Cait a lot of one more shots. We’ve been giving them one last shot for over a year now, ever since the Shatner bullshit started. I speak for myself when I say that I’m out of shots. I’m done. I’m at a point where nobody involved in Outlander deserves my time, money or energy anymore. I’m happy to give to charities and I’m happy that Sam and Cait are still promoting good charities and if people want to give, be my guest. Personally, I will not be shelling out any more money because at this point it’s starting to look like the only fans who get attention from Sam and Cait are those that are paying for it and they’re paying for it for attention from Sam and Cait. Not only do I not condone that, I also don’t condone being treated like ABSOLUTE SHIT and then being asked to donate money or to pay for something because Sam and Cait asked us to. Shippers did their part for WCC. We raised over 3700 pounds (silly American computer keyboards don’t have a pound symbol) in 2 weeks for Cait’s birthday last year. I’d like to see that same amount raised this year when it’s taken months for them to hit a relatively simple goal. and that can be directly correlated to fandom drama.
I got a little off topic but no I’m done. My interest in the show has gone way, way down over the last few months (just in case you think the recent bullshit is a catalyst - it’s not. this has been a months long thing) and all the recent bullshit definitely has not helped. I genuinely have little to no interest in watching any of the press so far, partly because it’s all been separate (STUPID STARZ. STUPID) but also just bc I don’t care. I’ve said before that the minute I started shipping my interest became more in Sam and Cait than in Jamie and Claire. It’s just how it is. I’ve been pretty vocal about my dislike for Diana’s writing and therefore my lack of interest in the books and just in general, I’m more likely to be a fan of real people over characters. so while I love Jamie and Claire, they’re not what’s keeping me in the fandom - Sam and Cait were - and since Sam and Cait (and the production overall) clearly don’t seem to care too much about keeping shippers around as fans to the point that we have been bullied and tormented for over a year with nothing but a “suggest you ignore,” why should I support them?
lastly, the antis can kiss my ass. they’ve been trying to kick us out of the fandom for YEARS and they’ve basically all but succeeded but they’re still harassing the fuck out of us and spreading bullshit. so what the fuck is the point? it’s easy for people like you, anon, to sit behind your computer and say give it another shot when you don’t have to deal with the shit some of us deal with. That attitude is one of the reasons there’s been such a divide amongst shippers. A few of us take the heat and everyone else gets to ship happily in their bubbles for it. It’s exhausting and not worth it anymore.
tl;dr I have nothing left to give.

October 13th – By the Gold Light of Your Halo
And the end of this sentence has never been truer. I was almost close enough to touch him…. (Not quite, but I sort of tried to a couple of times since I was literally second row aisle seat.) But I’m getting ahead of myself. Or is that a-Hed? You decide.
I was actually awake when Miya’s alarm went off the first time. Pretending to be asleep, but I’d checked my phone a time or two already.
Shortly after, my mom texted saying she’d talk with my favourite person at the bank about my debit card. I had more than enough to cover what I had tried to buy with it and yet…. Both she and Vicki were going to try to get down to the bottom of this because clearly, this wasn’t good.
I decided to answer the message when I actually got up. Which as it happened was about an hour later when John posted.
Of course 4G in Japan is still super slow and it takes forever to load, but whatever. It’s still John.
The previous afternoon, it was announced that there was no stagedooring. A little disappointing, but the stagedooring aspect was making nervous. What if I said something stupid to him like ‘You were great except for .“ Or "What the fuck is up with your wardrobe? Don’t you know how to dress yourself?” What if I lost the ability to speak my first language? (“John, ich lebe dich. Du bist der Hellstestern, meine Schöner.”)
I mean…. That’s the sort of thing that he might appreciate more if he actually KNEW me and knew that I was meaning that as teasing and that I wouldn’t actually want him to change the way he dresses or that I’m not actually all that fussed about whatever line changes there were (that weren’t supposed to be there.) I know it must be frustrating as hell for him when he forgets his lines or loses track of where he is in the script, but I think it’s cute. Very Hedwig. Very rock n roll. Very…. Robbie Williams. That man sold out STADIUMS and still would forget the lyrics to his hits. (Now he has a teleprompter XD)
Miya and I had breakfast. I had bought a waffle-thing at the store the previous night, but instead I tried some of the raisin sandwiches that I had purchased the night before. They were a sort of hard biscuit cookie with a soft, almost whipped, crème with raisins in it. And tea made with the lactose free coffee creamers that Miya had generously bought for me the night before.
We packed up our stuff to go to the theatre and ride the train. On the way down, I photographed every few stops so that I know where I’m going. On the way in, I saw an ad for a record store. Tower Records. I briefly daydreamt about running into John there. I know we probably wouldn’t if we went, but…. Still. Records. John. Not only two things I love, but things that actually go together.
The station we arrived at was actually under construction, the usual signs in English and Japanese having either been covered or taken down because of the diversions. In their place were signs reading only in Japanese and with arrows. I took photos of the ones I needed to remember to either turn at or follow.
Miya showed me around the Hikarie a little. In the back of my mind, this word sounds familiar to me, but it’s not until the next day that I can begin place it. The tour is more or less just walking by the various shops, occasionally discussing what they are, but more often discussing what’s likely going to happen with the show or Japanese culture questions. We actually went to lunch shortly after arriving.
For lunch, we picked the sushi 🍣 place on the 6th floor. The entire 6th floor is restaurants. Some of the other floors have restaurants and cafes too, like the 11th has a cafe right outside of it, but I wouldn’t know that for a few more hours.)
We go in and are seated. The restaurant has a very Deep Space Nine ordering system. You can click for your own language on the wall-mounted menu, there’s pictures, you tell it how much of everything you want, and the food comes on a short little track thing that looks like one of those short train things you used to see in westerns. And there’s a sushi conveyor belt. Very cool.
Miya remembered that sometimes shops in the Hikarie give discounts if you have a ticket to that day’s/that night’s show at the Orb. She calls it up on her iPad and then calls over the waitress. We get free drinks because we’re seeing Hedwig! I ordered tea, Miya stuck with the water and matcha powder.
We cancel the drink order off of our digital menu and then get down to actually ordering lunch. Miya orders one of the lunch specials, whereas I go a la carte.
The first things I picked were a tuna roll and two pieces of salmon avocado. I miss avocado. I miss when avocados didn’t cost $5 per fruit…. The food arrives and is incredible. The best salmon with avocado I’ve ever had…. It was one of the few times in my life that I have ever had avocado that was light and melt-in-your-mouth and the salmon was So. Fresh. just… so fresh.
I then opted to try some of the conveyor belt, pre-made sushi that was circulating around the restaurant. I grabbed the first thing that looked interesting – some small fried shrimp on top of a small pad of rice that was then all wrapped in seaweed. It had a nice, surprising yet mild heat to it. Feeling less certain in my ability to put the whole thing in my mouth, I picked some of the shrimp off of the first piece with my chopsticks. I also tried squid with a little bit of rice.
What I had forgotten about squid from the other time I had it at Wasabi is that it’s a very chewy piece of fish that’s hard to break pieces off of. Which in turn, makes it very hard to eat any of without putting the whole thing in your mouth. And when you swallow it, gives the unpleasant sensation that the whole thing is about ready to come back up.
The last unique thing I ordered was a couple of pieces of red fish on top of rice. I think this one was also tuna, but I’m not sure. And another salmon with avocado.
After we ate, Miya and I went to Bic Camera.
What necessitated going to Bic Camera was getting printer ink. And what necessitated the ink was that Miya wanted to give me maps to help with the getting around. At this point, I was just happy to be along for the ride. I’d never been to any of these places and possibly wouldn’t get a chance to go to them again anytime soon so why not? Just because it’s seemingly mundane, doesn’t mean comparing the differences isn’t interesting. We arrived at Bic Camera and were told that we actually needed to be in a different building for Bic Camera. Later, looking at the map of Shibuya that the Hikarie had for tourists, I learned that there are actually three buildings for Bic Camera in a relatively short amount of space. Who would have guessed!
Once at the correct Bic Camera, we went upstairs to get the printer ink. This building of the BC was set up like a department store, but entirely for computers, cameras, phones, and other electronics with a single floor dedicated to laptops, a different one for printers, a different one for phones, and phone cases hanging off of the edges of the levels as you rode the escalator up. This is the one of the stores I would love to have had the time to truly explore, but this was one of the few days where everything didn’t seem like it was going in such a rush to go here or go there or get this and get that.
We bought the ink and returned to the initial building for Bic Camera. Miya showed me some of the shampoos on offer since I had mentioned wanting to buy some the previous night. I explained that I had meant that I would buy her more of her own shampoo as a thank you for letting me stay with her! (They didn’t actually have her kind of shampoo and then we both forgot about it before I left Japan.)
The next thing on our list of things to do was to pick up the movie ticket for How to Talk to Girls at Parties. About two weeks before the start of the trip, it was announced that John was going to have his Japanese premiere of the film at the end of the week he was performing Hedwig. Of course, the tickets were again done by lottery and while we had won tickets to all of the Hedwig performances, I wasn’t certain that our luck would hold out enough to substantiate changing the plane ticket and extending my hotel reservation on the off chance that this would be the thing we weren’t lucky on. As a sort of consolation, when it was announced that fans could buy advanced tickets for when the movie actually opened in Japan, Miya offered to buy a ticket and give me the promotional pins that came with it. I had thanked her and offered to buy the ticket for her, again as a way of thanks. She had that said she did want to see the movie, that wouldn’t be necessary.
What was interesting then and what’s interesting to me still now is how many buildings in Japan have that department store structure. Where either it’s a multi-floor building that all of the shops belong to one business and you pay on at each floor or where it’s multiple businesses that are still interconnected and you have to walk through a shoe store to get to a dollar store. Being from the midwest where department stores are kind of the sole purview of malls and most businesses only get a single, possibly up to three levels, of their own, this was a fascinating anthropological difference. It wasn’t until I got to Osaka that I started to see more stand alone single story businesses.
We picked up the ticket, and I picked up some flyers for the movie. Miya stuck the pins and the ticket into her bag so that they wouldn’t get lost in my relatively huge Hello Kitty duffle bag that I had brought with me to carry my things and then we went back to the Hikarie. We still had over three hours before the show was supposed to start and had exhausted all of the errands that we had to do that day.
Miya asked what I wanted to do, if there was any shops that had caught my eye, or if there was any particular type of store that I wanted to visit and I remembered seeing the billboard ad for Tower Records on the way in. Off of the prompt ‘record store’ (cos I couldn’t remember the name), Miya found where we needed to be and we set off again, past Bic Camera, and arrived at the record store.
What I was looking for most was David Bowie or Queen things. Both musicians are ones that I have numerous antidotes and stories both from and about in Japan. Freddie in particular absolutely adored Japan and had his house decorated in a Japanese/Victorian England style and David, well Japan was the first time that David felt like a success. (In addition – the story that he told in one of Mick Rock’s books about how he was given a beautiful cape that had writing on it, that he used in his Ziggy shows a lot, but didn’t know what it meant for over 20 years. It was his name.)
We entered on the second floor, and like I usually do in record stores, I found the clearance/discount section on the floor I wanted and started looking through. I didn’t find anything for David, but I did find some Beatles and George Harrison. It wasn’t until we started looking through the aisles that I found David. His section had the last photo that was ever taken of him as the header section – it’s by Jimmy King, it was taken on his birthday, I was not expecting to see that photo on that day. I started looking through the collected CDs, finding a few that I took photos of for later purchasing or eBay searching. (At this point, I was still using the money converter to estimate about how much each thing would cost.) All the while, I’m telling Miya little antidotes about David or about the recording of each particular album, session, or concert. It’s the first time this trip that I nearly start crying…..
Eventually, we leave the section – or rather, I decide that we have to leave the section – and go looking for Queen. It occurred to me in the process of making that decision how silly it would be to be crying on the day that I was seeing Hedwig for the first time.
Along the way, I found Freddie’s solo section. The price for his singles was just a little too high for what I was willing to pay at the moment, but I took yet another photo of the back for later research when I had the time and wasn’t anticipating potentially buying a lot of merchandise at the show. So far, the only things that had been announced were the t-shirt and the program, but in the back of my mind, I kept thinking that more things might have been announced. And of course, dropping a LOT of money on Hedwig merch was the reason I had come out to Japan right now anyway. Well, that and seeing John.
Unfortunately, the Queen section was the same story – I either already had it or didn’t want to pay as much as the asking price for it. According to Miya, it’s because of the import charge. I found this highly ironic since in the US, it’s usually the Japanese things that have the extreme import charges.
Since that was it for that floor, after a brief flick-through of the clearance section up front, I purchased a David interview CD, a small magazine for my mother with The Smiths on the cover, and a bag of record sleeves since they were cheaper to buy here than to wait to get in the US.
We walked back down to the floor that we thought Ataru’s music would most likely be on and outside, I picked up some more flyers and booklets for things that I thought sounded interesting or cool. I ended up buying one of Ataru’s CDs – her most recent – before we moved onto the last floor we visited that day: soundtracks and movies.
That particular Tower Records had nothing for Hedwig nor RENT on the day that we visited, but I was able to snag some photos of the press for Trainspotting 2 (my favourite film with a US release this year) before we left.
We headed back to the Hikarie again and still had about an hour and a half before the show was going to start. Miya asked if I wanted to go get something on one of the lower levels or at the cafe outside the theatre, but since re-entering the building, it was all about Hedwig. Every part of me was focused on Hedwig. And like I usually am before seeing a show I’m highly anticipating or talking to a crush, I was trying not to vibrate out of my skin. Definitely too nervous to eat.
We went to the convenience store outside of the theater, this time a Lawson and not a 7/11, and I bought a pack of something that was shoved into my bag for later and a hot bottle of tea. The flavour of the tea was what I’d imagine hot barley to taste like, not bad, but not really….flavoured at all. Not that it mattered. Not that any of it mattered since it was getting down to ACTUALLY seeing the show.
A few minutes of nervously waiting outside the theatre passed and Miya opted to take another swing around the building again. We take some photos out of the windows at the now, very night time, Tokyo and then literally walk around the building. When we return, the doors have opened to go upstairs. We take the escalator, show our tickets, and are allowed into a room with posters advertising the program, a tv screen showing the currently static stage, the merchandise booth, and the many, many cosplayers for the evening. (While we had been waiting, I had looked up to one of the upper levels and very, very briefly mistaken one of the cosplayers for John.)
I bought the merchandise for myself and for Risa, Miya bought a program for herself, and then we went to find our seats. Our SECOND ROW seats.
They were playing Love Will Keep Us Together as we sat down and I was trying not to completely freak out since it’s one of the songs mentioned in the script! And then immediately after, Young Americans by David Bowie. Another song referenced in the script!! When they played Lust for Life by Iggy Pop, I figured the show would be starting since it was traditional that Iggy was usually the last artist played before the show started. In Japan, it wasn’t. Light My Fire by The Doors was.
And the show started with Ataru coming from one of the side doors and announcing “Ladies and gentlemen, whether you like it or not, Hedwig!!! Hed-wig! Hed-wig! Hed-wig!” getting the audience to cheer and chant for Hedwig, clapping for her arrival into the venue. I was turned, looking at Ataru, clapping of course, chanting for Hedwig’s arrival when the show started.
On Broadway, Hedwig had descended from the ceiling; Off-Broadway, she had come from the back of the venue, sauntering up to the stage…. but here, here Hedwig was standing behind the screen projecting an image of the Berlin Wall with graffiti on the Western side and stark nothing on the East. As the audience chants, the wall develops cracks in the middle, eventually exploding from the middle with Hedwig standing triumphant, beautiful…. in the sudden divide between East and West. I… had been looking in the wrong direction.
I whipped my head back towards the stage so quickly you’d have developed second-hand whiplash watching me.
Part of the performance, I’m watching the show completely amazed that this is happening, that this is real. That I’m actually in the same room as my favourite show being performed. I’m not sure I blinked the entire time I was watching the show. The other part of the performance, the part that features Yitzhak more than Hedwig, I’m still looking at John, looking to see how he is reacting to Yitzhak as Hedwig or simply being Hedwig without speaking and without making grand movements at that point. Mostly just…. being. To me, it’s fascinating, being in the second row. Being able to see all of the little reactions, expressions, costume alterations behind semi-opaque screens. In a way, it’s like a “How It’s Made” of my favourite show. Sometimes, during these moments I feel like I should probably actually be watching Yitzhak since she’s the one driving the action at that point….
The show was staged completely different from any version of Hedwig I’d ever seen before with new lines, new alterations to the script and to the format. For the first time since the movie, I’m seeing a production that doesn’t either actually have Emily Hubbly’s drawings or someone imitating her style. The design of the animations is specifically more Japanese than the other versions, which of course makes sense being as the show is set in Japan.
The show was also basically a public dress rehearsal; something that annoyed some of the people on Twitter later (apparently), but I found completely wonderful. Again, this is a show that I know so well that I can follow international versions where I don’t speak the language just based off of intuiting a few words, of course I want to see a messier version of the show. A less polished version in terms of performance. My two favourite differences that weren’t in the script were 1.) where Hedwig is talking about masturbating Tommy in the bath and her wig completely popped off. She looked very surprised for a moment before picking up her wig and continuing perfectly. And 2.) the line change that Hedwig had in Wicked Little Town Reprise? She sang it so confidently for being the absolute wrong lyrics…. And of course, a million other little improv things stood out, like Hedwig calling Yitzhak her “oto” and then asking “what’s the other one again? [Yitzhak supplies word] Oh that’s right.” And the golden Hello Kitty patch on her ass (up towards her hip more than centered like the handprints were on Broadway.)
At the end of the show, I felt like I had probably smiled through 90% of the show it was performed so well. John, of course was amazing. And Ataru was completely incredible. I had anticipated loving her from the things that I had seen of her on YouTube and she blew away any expectations that I had had of her, she was so good.
Afterwards, as Miya and I walked out of the venue, she asked what I wanted to get for dinner/snack after the show. I said I didn’t care; wherever she wanted was fine because I had literally just had one of the best experiences of my life.
We opted to go back to the sushi restaurant, this time actually sitting at the bar/lunch counter. She ordered some a la carte sushi this time, I took more things off of the sushi conveyor belt. Since we had seen the show now, we were technically entitled to more free drinks. I opted to go for a not-free option of cold sake and Miya had…. I think iced tea? Maybe more matcha.
Honestly, cold sake tastes exactly like hot sake, but just a little bit smoother. While I liked the smoothness of it, I think the hotness of the hot sake helped it out a little bit more. I definitely would not drink sake on a regular basis, but it is interesting to me to see how that strong of a taste when blended into a sauce for Chinese food is completely minimized outside of an afterburn when you swallow. Miya had a sip or two of it too and I don’t think she was all that impressed with it either. I accidentally knocked over my glass at one point, getting the menu and the counter wet and sake-covered. I think the waiter thought I was drunk, but truly, I was just that clumsy.
While we ate, I searched for that one video I had remembered John posting about being worried about a lot of serious things and then his ass. I thought it would be a good idea to say “I don’t know about the other things, but your ass looked amazing from the second row!” I swear to you, I came up with that before I even thought about ordering the sake.
We paid and left both the restaurant and the Hikarie. I was feeling very optimistic. And a little sleepy.
The journey back went very smoothly and unlike the previous night, we did not stop at the 7/11 before going back to Miya’s.
Back at her apartment, I flipped through my own copy of the program by cell phone flashlight before falling asleep. Only a few Instagram posts by John of various backstage photos and rehearsal video keeping me awake.

Its 6:38 pm warm/sunny/fake doctors,real friends
Welcome to “8 Questions with……”
Okay,I am going to admit something here…..for the first time,I have hidden something from a guest. So now I can see you shaking your head and saying “What???”    So I’m trying to broaden the blog and my friend Rebecca encouraged me to start using LinkedIn more. I told her I thought that was just a job seeker network site and she explained it is but its so much more now. You are encouraged to not only network but also promote yourself and since you are a writer, you should promote your blog.    So I have been slowly doing this and that is how I met our guest Jason Bourque.  I was posting on LinkedIn when I saw a post about Jason’s new film “My Wife’s Secret Life” being promoted by Lifetime. So not only did I not follow Jason but I asked him for a interview. He very generously agreed and I was pretty stoked.    Of course since I had pretty much cold asked Jason,I knew I had to do my research so I could ask some good questions. As I scanned over the movies he directed,I suddenly stopped cold. It seems like Jason and I had a “history” between us.    When I first started film reviewing with Paladin,I really knew zero about what I was doing,I would watch the movie and then express my opinion. I didn’t know anything about the process about filmmaking,I just knew if I liked it or not.    The second film I ever reviewed was a made for SyFy disaster film called “Seattle Superstorm” and I thought it was pretty cheesy and bad. I’m not defending nor changing my POV about it but I have learned a lot about films since then….how they made, budgets, casting, special effects, indie vs. major studios,IFC vs. A24,etc……   I know that today I would write my review differently,I wouldn’t change my opinion but I could understand the constraints that Jason was under and that he was trying his best with what he was given.    He won’t know any of this until I post this interview,I didn’t tell him that I had reviewed “Superstorm” in only my 2nd review. I like to think just as he has grown as a director,I have grown as a writer and I hope he will understand that.    With that said,Jason Bourque is director that can slide behind the camera and create magic – be it feature films, hard hitting documentaries or helming Hallmark and Lifetime Channel movies. He was won awards for both his documentaries and his feature film work. I am very happy to introduce you to Jason as he answers his 8 Questions…
Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your current project.
Thanks Patrick. As a working indie director, writer, producer, I usually have about a dozen projects on the go in various stages of development. I love collaborating on feature work in between television movie gigs. So in a quick snap shot I have two features I produced in post-production – rom com “Godfrey” starring Nick Thune, Cleopatra Coleman and Iliza Shlesinger and the family drama “When Time Got Louder” starring Willow Shields, Lochlyn Munro and Elizabeth Mitchell. A Lifetime movie I exec-produced “My Husband’s Deadly Past” aired last week. As a director, my lifetime movie “My Wife’s Secret Life” just got a Leo nomination (Excellence in BC Film and Television) for Best Director and Best Lead actor. It’s my second year in a row for a nomination. This year I also had my movie “Hotwired in Suburbia” released (on most VOD platforms) and the Hallmark flick “Amazing Winter Romance”.  I know it sounds like a lot but I’m admittedly a workaholic when it comes to filmmaking – It’s my passion.
How have you been handling the pandemic? What have you done to keep busy?
It’s such a horrible global curveball we’re living through and it’s been heartbreaking. Personally I’ve found solace focusing on family and health. I’m also a writer so I’m used to long stretches cooped up balancing my laptop on my pug’s head (she’s a lap dog) as I write 🙂 I’ve been very prolific over the last three months – series development, contracted script polishes and applications for my company www.goldstarprod.com I’m also overseeing a couple writers as well. I love to mentor new writers and directors and I give back when I can.
When did you know you wanted to become involved in the film industry and was directing always your goal going in?What makes directing so appealing to you?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been a natural storyteller and artist. I knew I wanted to make movies since I was fifteen, after watching “Evil Dead” and “Alien” back-to-back and since then it was always my goal.  I dived pretty quick into movie-making, starting out with zombie shorts with the local kids in the neighbourhood.   Directing is my first love and I totally prefer it to writing (that can be a lonely existence sometimes) and producing (lots more stress, personality management and sometimes factors out of my control). For me, directing is all about teamwork and it’s such a massive collaboration with creatives which I love. I’ll never take a “Film by Jason Bourque” credit – I simply don’t believe in it.
You are the rare director who walks both in drama and sci-fi and yet have also done several award winning documentaries, can you share your mindset  when you work on a documentary versus a fictional film? What was working on “Shadow Company” like? Were you shocked at what you discovered? How much of “Shadow Company” influenced the making of your film “Drone”?
Hey thanks for doing your homework and asking about my docs! As a storyteller, I’m totally at ease jumping from dramatic features to docs to scripts for other directors. I find the process of making documentaries more fulfilling /important than the final product. They allow me to travel with a small crew, meet incredible people and create a dramatic story sometimes on the fly. It’s very liberating. “Shadow Company” was co-written and co-directed with my friend Nick Bicanic. I had a huge learning curve on that one and it came at a time when little was actually known about private military companies. It’s heavy material, sometimes disturbing, sometimes heartbreaking yet we also infused it with lots of entertainment value to make it palatable for the general public.         Ultimately it was used as a teaching tool for the US Senate which I’m very proud of. Making “Shadow Company” was a huge journey and time commitment (a couple years) but well worth it. It influenced “Drone” a little when it came to writing the script with creative writing partner Paul Birkett. Having a character as a private CIA drone contractor was born out of “Shadow Company”. It also allowed us to stay away from the glut of military drone movies that had recently come out like “Eye in the Sky” and “Good Kill”.
How did you get asked to direct Lifetime and Hallmark Channel movies? What was the process like? We know actors have auditions but do directors have to audition as well?
As directors we do sometimes audition through creative calls. Our agents submit us and we’re on that magical list that gets cut down to whomever finally gets the job.  Luckily I have a track record with some producers who offer me the gigs. The majority of the television movies I work on feel like indie filmmaking. Sometimes they’re sold to Hallmark or Lifetime afterwards. If they don’t sell to those broadcasters, they can also be sold to Netflix or other platforms. So many ways to sell product out there! With the “The Chronicle Mysteries: Recovered” I was hired by the creator and star Alison Sweeney because she wanted the pilot more stylish / cinematic than the usual MOWs and she was a fan of “Drone”. I was then approved by Hallmark.
What is it like as a feature film director with a lot freedom to suddenly being asked to direct TV films with a much stricter format?   What do you do to leave your footprint on the movie?
I don’t mind the MOW (Movie Of the Week) sandbox at all. I’m constantly looking at ways to raise the bar and I’m always learning, even after 18 years of directing. I also direct for a company that gives me lots of freedom on set. They’re shot fast though – usually 13-15 days so it’s all about the planning / prep.
If you could remake 2 of your films with a 100 million budget, which three would you choose and why?
“Termination Point”!  It’s a very cool time travel disaster movie I directed for SyFy starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Jason Priestley. The script by Peter Sullivan is truly excellent – the hook is a jaw-dropper and it has a huge scope to it. The plot is too twisty to explain briefly but it’s well worth checking out.  I love this movie but the VFX company went bankrupt half way through post and I had to shoot it in 15 days.
“Doomsday Prophecy” is another SyFy movie I would love to re-make. I co-wrote the script and again, had to shoot it in 14 days but it’s a fantastic premise with excellent characters. The Moai heads of Easter Island are an alien defence mechanism against a dark star about to eat our planet.
You subscribe to the Jack Webb idea of using a lot of the same actors for your films, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using the same actors? How do you approach a film that is cast with a lot of rookie performers?  Do you like to be involved with the casting process?
I’m hands on with all casting. Honestly, as an indie filmmaker having to shoot quickly, I sometimes can’t afford to take chances. I need actors I can trust, are incredibly prepared and can sometimes handle eight pages of dialogue a day with only a couple takes. It’s why I’ve used actors like Matthew MacCaull in 5 movies. We have our own shorthand. With rookie performances it’s all about helping them connect to what makes their performance honest. Sometimes it might be a simple one line of direction – “Play it like you’re talking to your mother” for example. After years of directing I’ve found it’s best to avoid mapping out the emotional landscape of a character for an actor. Rookie actors can sometimes be overwhelmed and that relationship always needs to stem from a foundation of trust.
I’m going to put you on the spot here……but what three actors and three actresses have you enjoyed working with the most and why?       Pick one relatively unknown actor do you think will break out within a year.
I gravitate towards really good people I genuinely like. No ego. Hard workers. Big hearts.
Sarah Butler. She always goes the extra mile and is a perfectionist. Sarah is extremely well prepared, the crew loves her and she doesn’t shy away from physically demanding work. And she’s a dog person like me so we bonded instantly 🙂
Josh Byer. He’s an incredible character actor and he always makes unique choices, whether its as a supporting lead or as a day player. There’s no one else I can compare him to in the Vancouver acting pool so he’s my secret weapon for elevating a scene. I’ve had him in a dozen movies. Josh is also a close friend and a triple threat.  Besides acting, he’s an accomplished artist and musician.
Matthew MacCaull. Excellent on all levels and very versatile. I’ve directed him in thrillers as both the villain and also the romantic lead. Matt smashed the lead role in my “Black Fly” movie out of the ballpark and he’s been my favourite lead ever since.
Which three genres  are the most challenging for you as a director? What is more important- a good story or a big budget?
I’m comfortable with all genres but thrillers come very naturally – I love exploring the dark corners of the human condition and I have a knack for creating tension. Comedy can be challenging sometimes – Hallmark walks a fine line with their comedy and they shy away from belly laughs or big physical comedy. it’s the art of the “soft chuckle” 🙂 I love sci-fi but there’s an extra level of prep involved due to storyboards, animatics etc… due to big CGI action sequences. The challenges are the usual ones since the dawn of filmmaking. There never seems to be enough time or money. Luckily the general audience never knows the majority of compromises made by the indie director.  A good story worth telling is always the most important to me. “Black Fly” cost very little to make.  I’ve seen so many big budget movies fail to engage an audience due to a poor script or it’s an an overblown sequel no one asked for. It’s usually because the big budgets also mean “filmmaking by committee” due to the stakes being so high. Too many producers with their hands in the creative decision making can create chaos. A camera operator I work with has a great saying – “Tweak it till it sucks” which I suspect happens a lot with big budgets.
What is your current dream/passion project and can you share a little bit about it?
I have three I gotta make – “Iris”, a contained horror that takes place in an ER during a hurricane. “Fourteen” – an action movie about a murdered hitman who gets reincarnated as a fourteen-year old boy and tries to take down the crime syndicate responsible for his death and finally “Claw” – a contained sci-fi / home invasion about a robotics engineering student who builds a medical robot that kidnaps her and her boyfriend.
The cheetah and I are flying over to watch to you shoot your latest film but we are a day early and now you are stuck playing tour guide, what are we doing?
Vancouver is beautiful. We have the world’s best sushi, tons of coffee shops, Stanley Park for great hiking and bike trails. I always recommend Granville Island for a visit – an awesome artistic hub with a vibrant market. Our restaurant scene is world-class along with micro-breweries.  Hopefully everything settles soon and you can drop by for a visit. If all goes well I’ll be directing again this fall. Thanks Patrick!
I like to thank Jason for agreeing to do this interview with me. The cheetah and I have a copy of “Drone” and we’ll be taking a peek at it very soon.  And you already know we’re going to get his Hallmark Channel films as well because that is how the cheetah and I roll.

SR22 Insurance?
My 22 yr old sons car was repossessed. He cancelled his car insurance policy since he no longer owns a car. He was required to carry an SR22 because of a bad driving record. The California DMV will suspend his license if he does not have proof of car insurance. Hes not driving and plans to not own a vehicle for the next 6 months. How does he meet the California DMV requirements without purchasing a car insurance policy? Also, if were able to get an older vehicle and get liability insurance only on it and add the SR22 can it satisfy the California DMV? My son is desperately trying to clean up his driving record too. Even if literally purchases an older vehicle and never drives it just to meet his DMV requirement. Will his past actions of too many tickets and accidents ever stop haunting him? Finally, his car was stolen in mid 2013. The car was reported stolen and it was eventually recovered and the insurance did repair significant damages does this also count against his driving record? The damage to the vehicle all occurred after it was stolen. I'm sorry I have so many questions I'm just at a loss. I need to get him back on his feet within a year but I need to know he will be able to drive too. He realizes now he messed up. He's got a great job and makes good money but I want to make sure that these past mistakes do not haunt him forever. The good news is there are no DUI's or reckless driving. Thanks for any help!""
