Hi! Love your TikTok translations, they help me learn so much. Sorry if you've answered this before already, but as a language student myself, I was just curious about how you got so good at Chinese - is it a native language for you, or what's your background in using/studying it? Thank you!

I think I answered this a long time ago (like 2021 maybe) so I will just tell it again. It's kind of a longwinded boring post that's very self-centric (😬) and also probably not going to have any helpful advice to the average language learner, so I'm going to put it under a read more!

Background

My family is Chinese so it's my heritage language. I did learn it before English as a baby but then forgot a lot of it. My parents speak Chinese at home but I always replied in English growing up. Part of this is because I have a twin sibling and because we spoke English at school, we also started speaking English to each other at home.

We went to Chinese school on Sundays growing up (this is like a community/cultural school; it included other courses like math, Chinese dance, art, pre-SATs (lol), etc, depending on who in the community was available to teach), but I didn't really pay attention so my Chinese was pretty shit for a long time—like broken conversational level shitty, although I have always had a strong comprehension ability. My dad's side is from Sichuan so I grew up understanding a bit of Sichuanese.

The beginning of my "studying"

I don't actually have much of a background studying Chinese in a formal setting. I took Chinese 101-103 in college as part of a language requirement (specifically chose to start with 101 so I could relearn basics, even though my teachers kept offering to place me in higher levels). I really credit my Chinese 101 prof who was also the college's calligraphy teacher for making us focus on brush stroke order and recognising characters and understanding semantic components, which is something other profs did not emphasise (they were more focused on building conversational skills).

Anyway, that was only my freshman year of college because I ended up changing majors and not having a language requirement anymore (boo). I continued studying a bit of Chinese in the intervening years, but I am not a very disciplined person when it comes to self-study, so much of it was just translating song lyrics for my own amusement. During this time, I also started watching some cdramas, but mostly just Chinese web shows, which maybe helped? (I don't think I was watching enough for it to really make a difference).

Fast forward a couple years to 2020 and I started watching more cdramas during lockdowns, including watching 成化十四年 (The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty), which I was super invested in for about two years (this used to be a fandom blog lol). Basically, hyperfixation led me to rapidly improve my Chinese; I started translating a few behind-the-scenes videos for fandom friends. In order to keep up with Chinese fans and gain access to more material about the show, I started venturing onto Chinese sites such as weibo, bilibili, and eventually, douyin, which I downloaded around October of 2020 (so this was 6 months into my increased interest into Chinese things). At first, I translated a couple of douyins to share with fandom friends as I had done with behind-the-scenes materials, but for whatever reason I felt like some of the videos I wanted to translate would just be annoying to spam into the chat... I couldn't figure out a way to connect them to the blorbos, but I still wanted to translate them, so I started posting them here on tumblr. That's how my douyin translations started out. This was the height of covid-19 related sinophobia, too, so at some point I started realising how important it was to continue translating douyins, and that motivated me to continue even beyond it just being a fun thing to do. On that topic, it was through this blog that I realised how poorly understood China and Chinese people are, specifically on this site. I feel like that has changed a lot, or maybe that's just a comment on insular online spaces, but I have to think not; since I started translating douyins, I've seen a noticeable decrease in sinophobic comments and messages (not that I don't still get them, but it's lessened), and I think that's also thanks in great part to other blogs on here that were posting/have started to post more content from China to help increase exposure to tumblr users.

Improving

In any case, in the beginning, I did a lot of translations mostly by ear rather than reading captions because my Chinese reading wasn't that good.

It's kind of slowly improved with time and repetitive reading, and over the last three years now, I've also gone through periods of taking notes and actively seeking out some vocab lists or grammar explanations... but it usually comes in the process of trying to translate something. My motivations in "studying" (it's more like "figuring out") Chinese is largely based on the simple desire to know what people are talking about... what they're joking about... what they're ranting about and roasting. Related: I also started reading fanfics in Chinese about a year ago. Some fics have been easier to read than others, but some of the best ones I've read were also the ones that challenged me the most, and which I had to take a lot of notes on while reading. I'll admit! There have been times where I just took a fic and dumped that sucker in google translate and have it read the Chinese to me, so I could just listen to it like a podfic. But even so, I would take notes, because I think my improvements in Chinese are heavily connected to my Chinese literacy.

Reading douyin comments and forums on douban or comment sections on bilibili has been one of the main ways that I've picked up on common phrases and characters. I often write things down but I do so more as a muscle memory practice, because I have never really been the sort of person who reads back notes (this was also how I studied in school, iirc). Branching out and translating things that are written in formal or non-colloquial styles is also a way I challenge myself from time to time, and I do like to look up the etymology of Chinese characters from time to time because it helps me pick up patterns of semantics and phonetic hints when I'm reading (this makes it easier to guess what a character might mean or sound like, even if you've never seen it before). Overall, translation has been the great learning tool for me. I think maybe it comes down to learning styles? I have always learned better from trying to teach others, and I feel like translation works a similar muscle in the mind; translation is about figuring out ways to efficiently communicate a message, and in order to do so, you must be able to grasp the essence of what it is you're relaying.

All this said... And to try and return to your original ask after all my usual Wawa rambling... I actually don't think my Chinese is that good, lol. In fact, there's probably people who follow this blog who are studying Chinese in a more conventional and methodical manner whose Chinese is objectively much better than mine 🤷🏻‍♂️ I mean, if you crunch the numbers, I have really only be self-"studying" for three years. Three years of what is really just vibe-based learning. There's a lot of vocab I still don't know (I mean my English vocab is pretty limited too, sooo.... 😭), a lot of areas that I can still improve on, and am improving on, and try to improve on... when the mood strikes. Again, I am not a very disciplined self-study type.

Maybe this will give any other Chinese diaspora hope, though. I feel like it's never too late for us to start learning. There is probably a seed or language foundation within you already which will make it easier for you to start, and then after that, I think it sort of comes down to finding what interests you and will keep you motivated.

Most of the stuff I talk about on here when it comes to culture or folk art or what have you, I did not know even five years ago! I learned about it because I was interested to find out more. (That's another reason I have to laugh when I get some of the asks I do in my inbox... The stuff I don't answer is dumbfounding at times. You translate a couple of funny videos and people think you're some kind of Tripadvisor cultural ambassador guy! I swear...)

marble hornets band au... thoughts? suggestions? im kind of in love already. more thoughts below

ok first of all? no slenderman in this universe. its my au and i get to make my blorbos (somewhat) happy BUT the operator is still one of tims hallucinations that hes been having since he was a kid. tim writes songs to cope with his mental illness, he's done this his whole life but hes never shared any of them w anyone. skip to film school (maybe i should change their major to be music so it makes more sense that theyre all into it? unsure. anyways). alex has been looking to start a band but hasnt been putting a lot of effort into people searching cause hes focused on school. and one night — maybe on a dare, maybe because he's had a couple of drinks — tim performs a song about the operator. everyones taken aback cause they didnt know the guy very well but they really like the song. alex goes woah ive been looking to start a band actually?? and kind of drags along everyone in the room to a first rehearsal it goes surprisingly well, everyone clicks and the music sounds great. since theyre all living in dorms and using the practice studio on campus theyre able to get together usually a few times a week, and they hang out outside of it too. they become really close friends. most of the songs are still tims old material but they write stuff together too. brian has some killer ideas and eventually they end up with enough material that matches in vibes to release their first album: "To The Ark". its a massive project, 38 songs.. YEAH THATS RIGHT each one is named after a totheark video. it also makes sense because tim 'wrote' a lot of them and brian the others. im a genius tell me im a genius. also maybe clips from it are the music videos for the songs? or clips from mh too i like the idea of that. idk its released in three parts (for the three seasons) and "Operator" (THE SONG TIM PLAYED FOR THEM FIRST BTW) becomes a radio hit out of nowhere. by this time theyre reaching graduation so its time to discuss the future of the band!! theres a big scene where theyre each thinking abt what they want for the future but they end up deciding they want to keep it together and see where it leads them :) so they go on tour together and are super successful and umm happily ever after. thats as far as ive thought LOL also theyre all gay and trans just like in canon <3/hj. so maybe theres love triangle stuff?? but i dont really have any fav pairing in this scenario since the dynamics are different.. idk give me ideas pleas. and if anyone drew them i would piss myself and cry OH ALSO I FORGOT TO MENTION all the alter ego things are like stage personas in this. i think thats probably apparent in the first image but yeah. they go on stage and introduce themselves as that and wear the masks for performances. idk why alex and jessica go without one maybe ill design them masks too but that feels weird

Haunted by Kuai Liang and Reiko thoughts. One thing bout me? If there's no lore between two blorbos I want to see together, I'll simply Frankenstein that shit.

Kuai Liang is raised for honour. Reiko is raised for pride. One is destined for a throne he doesn’t want, the other thinks kneeling is a privilege. Sunshine brother, war son.

Some headcanons because I am SOO unwell about their potential:

Reiko can't bring himself to fancy anyone who can't kick his ass. Kuai Liang can. Embarrassingly fast. At first, Reiko confuses his steadfast but fierce attraction to Bi-Han's younger brother as admiration. Just respect between warriors

Kuai Liang? Looked at this 6'4 bull of a man, turned to Tomas, and said, " My ancestors would be ashamed of what I'd let this man do to me" "what the fuck man"

Don't get me wrong, I adore chaste, shy Kuai; Watching his cheeks warm up in ripe peaches and listening to his words stutter when he's embarassed is the BEST

But we seriously need to acknowledge Reiko Is STUNNING.

His eyes are winter fire and his hands, hardened by combat, are big, and his laughter is deep and addicting and infectious

Reiko has no idea why the Lin Kuei's pretty boy even bothers sparing him two looks. He's not a man, he's a soldier. People don't look at him as something worth caring about

"...I like the origami swans you do for children, when they flock to you in markets," Kuai sounds softer than song when he says it. It makes Reiko's heartbeat climb up his throat.

"...If you tell anybody, I'll have your tongue on a plate."

Obligatory younger brother Reiko going to Mileena for these confusing emotions

He rants about Kuai Liang's eyes for a few hours (how many metaphors does he HAVE)

He gets diagnosed with "accute faggotry" and cries for an hour

After he gets over it, he's actually really passionate and wants to begin courting immediately;

I've never really "participated" in fandom other than making fanarts now and then, but I must tell you that Gortash from Baldur's Gate 3 will NOT leave my brain and I might actually. Scream about him on here. I dunno like Gort Nation is really active on twitter but I feel like I can't be free on there. Tumblr feels like the correct place for screaming about my blorbo!!!

He's really hard to draw but I have a little doodle in the works. I'm also making a playlist because I couldn't find any existing ones that met my standards HAHA uhhh I mean there are some funny ones. But I want something heavy. I want a playlist like you might have found on 8tracks. With a beautiful custom-made graphic and less than 30 carefully selected tracks. I am going for a vibe and that vibe is not a bunch of edgy pop songs. I know he's cringe but please 😭 (My fave song for him at the moment is "Needles and Pins" by Deftones 🖤)

If you wanna know how bad it is, I've never read fanfiction in my life (except ones my friends wrote), but I finally broke and went on AO3. Read some absolutely deranged fics and it was awesome. Gortash and Dark Urge are bringing out my dark side again. But also I've never seen an interpretation of Gortash that I don't like, so hoping there are some wholesome fics about him too, for variety!

Anyways, I love this horrible man and will try my best not to make him too pretty in my art, but no promises 🥺

But I wonder why reader is single most of the time😢 it's hard NOT to like her...

and I'm thinking, is it because of Ari? Maybe a couple of weeks after they get together, ari went to a bar with her (a real date as bf and gf?)and someone reader used to date came up to chat with her and said something like "I'm glad you are finally together" "I knew it was the two of you when you see him and your eyes light up and vice versa"

Ah, the blorbo-force is too strong with this one and I think you've created a whole new series! Whoopsy 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm gonna do this as a history and then after you two are together, so it's a bit disjointed (smut will be separate). Just a bit of angst (mild language) and more fluff. WC 1.8k (what is there like a magic range of stuff I write fast?? weird.)

Ten years ago, you met Philip through a mutual friend. He was a nice, military-minded (and enlisted), simple man who shyly asked you out. He had long-term goals similar to yours. It seemed like a good match, but there was always deployment looming over both of your heads.

Over the couple of months you dated before he first went overseas, Philip took you out with some of his service buddies, and you met Ari.

Ari was a flirt and a bit of a douche at that time, a big bear of a man with a huge heart and an even bigger libido. It was pretty amusing to watch, actually, because you had the outsider's view of knowing he was perfectly respectful to you--his friend's girl--versus his playboy behavior toward others.

Philip got deployed a few weeks after you first met Ari.

You were all nerves and no ground wire, grasping for a rational answer to 'what happens next' without a chance of knowing, so you went to familiar places like Philip's regular bar. All the guys who hadn't been deployed were still there, and so was Ari.

Again, even without Philip there, Ari was friendly and totally respectful of you. You were basically one of the guys. You rubbed Ari's back when he puked in the parking lot after a shot contest one night. He regularly spoke about his 'relationships,' if that many one-ish-night stands count, and you'd politely give your perspective. Ari seemed to appreciate that.

He invited you out to group things every so often and drove you around--like Philip offered when he was around. Ari's not a very patient man, so he complained the entire time, asking why you didn't have a car. You were honest that you wanted certain things in life and that they would require saving as much money as possible. You don't mind the time spent on public transport because the cost of your own vehicle would be too high. Ari's version of that same concept was to spend as close to zero dollars on housing as possible because, just like all the boys, deployment was always right on the horizon.

Philip returned a different man.

You knew it. Ari knew it. No one really said a damn thing.

Philip just slowly evaporated from your life, transferring to a different base another few months after his homecoming, and it ended up being Ari who told you he was gone.

Because Ari kept up with you. He was your best friend as well as the lifeline to the future you thought you'd have.

Then Ari was deployed.

You wrote some letters with as much detail as you could think of--down to the stupidest little changes at your local bar and about any potential boyfriends you'd met--until Ari came back.

He was gone again within a week, and he could never tell you where he was.

So you see, Ari changed a lot over the ten years you've known him, but he never became a different person. Some of his more ridiculous qualities were weeded out or simply lessened like he's still a flirt but he's not a fuckboi anymore; and you've changed, too.

You used to be so desperate to align that perfect future that you stayed in shitty relationships even after you could tell it wasn't right. Now you refuse to settle. Having a family is only worth having with the right man, and it becomes crystal clear pretty quickly when a guy is not the right man.

By the time you might have considered Ari a romantic option, he was gone, and then you always expected he might return like Philip. Only after he retired from the military could you tell how his personality had truly changed. He'd always be your best friend though, and you would always be there as his. Beyond that, why rock the boat? It was too important to hold on to the steady relationship you had. You simply didn't see anything but a friend.

It's hot as hell on the roof.

Ari fleetingly misses the desert compared to this stovetop beneath him, but he keeps going, only listening to pieces of the other men's conversation.

They're yammering on about what's great about so-and-so's wife and why whoever's latest girl walked out.

Ari's just sweating and trying to finish the day. Each day working construction convinces him that that first, cold beer afterward is the closest he'll get to heaven.

The guy beside him starts describing his perfect woman, and Ari absently says, "sounds like my friend."

"Really?" The hammering pauses. "Think you could introduce me."

He has no idea why, but Ari shakes his head, hard hat slipping a fraction of an inch against his slick forehead.

"Taken," he mutters.

"Shame," the guy grumbles.

But you're not. Ari knows you aren't seeing anyone, and he still said no. If he considers it, his coworker is not someone he'd set you up with anyway. He didn't have that thought before answering though.

You're in a great mood on the drive to the bar.

The music's turned up so loud that Ari is physically leaning toward the cracked open window to dampen the sound, but you're drumming on his dashboard and unabashedly singing at the top of your lungs.

He hated this song when it first debuted, but you've whittled him down. He doesn't like it; he just tolerates it and thinks of you whenever it plays in public somewhere else. His radio station would never play this.

Today though, today you got a promotion, a promotion which Ari had to argue with you to apply for--"I'm not leaving until you see sense, woman," he'd shrieked, holding your front door shut so you couldn't kick him out--and as a bonus, you get control of the music plus your first two drinks on him.

Right before the last refrain, you scoot across the bench seat of his truck and move the drumming to the steering and his outstretched arm, and...and...

Ari smiles just like he normally would, but his usual amusement snowballs into something overwhelming. The pressure pushes against the inside of his chest and makes him feel heavy.

It's hard to breathe even while the wind whips his face, and even though he's watching the road again he just sees your face. He struggles for the few minutes it takes to pull into his usual spot in the dirt lot, and only when he too harshly slams on the break to park does it hit him.

Ari's in love with his best friend.

Fuck.

About two weeks later, Ari drives by a house, and he's hit with this thought. It's so clear to him, this life he suddenly considers having with you, that he has to pull over and stare from the sidewalk.

He does not have the balls to tell you how he feels. Too much could change. Too much could go wrong. One thing he does know, however, is that you've always wanted the life he never truly considered before, so you should see this.

He knows you. You'll want this house. Somewhere swirling in that pressure rooted in his chest is also the hope that you'll want that life with him.

Um. So this isn't the house he thought you'd go for originally, but he meant it when he promised to help. This isn't the time he thought would be right to tell you either, but there's something so stupidly domestic about working on the house together, and something so frustratingly intimate about your hands on him--even in a perfectly reasonable, friendly way--that makes Ari crack open and lunge for you.

In Ari's defense...ahhh, screw it, he just wants you.

It's all still new. Between you working, and him working, and the both of you working on your house, this is actually the first time back at your usual haunt since...something changed.

Ari's taking it easy on affection, indirectly touching you by draping his arm over the back of your chair, angling toward you to listen whenever you say something. It's possible that for anyone else, you two still look like best friends having a drink.

In fact, it's obvious that nobody notices because the other two men sitting around the table haven't said a thing, and they are not subtle dudes.

Randomly, José leans across the table and crooks a finger to make you come closer.

"Hey, if you're interested," he whispers very loudly, "my cousin moved back into town recently, and I think you two would have fun."

"Um," you say at the speed of molasses, settling back into your seat so that Ari's forearm lays clear across your shoulder blades. You glance at him, not knowing whether it's okay to tell the others what's happened.

His face is blank, perfectly schooled with military precision, but Ari's eyes are brilliant blue and sincere. You feel his thumb lift from the chair to your arm.

It's up to you. It's your call. Always so respectful.

"So...I don't think..." You glance at Ari again and hold his gaze this time. The rest of his hand wraps around your arm before he slides it over to the base of your neck.

He shuffles nearer and plants a kiss on your temple, muttering, "here it comes."

José and Dimitri explode.

"Fucking FINALLY!"

"You have got to be kidding me!"

You're confused and a little defensive. "What?!"

"I fucking knew it. Bro, I told you."

Ari straightens slightly and holds up his free hand. "Wait a minute, Dim-tree. That was like five years ago."

And he'd meant it then; you were just friends. You aren't even the same people as five years ago, not entirely.

Dimitri punches José's shoulder. "Drinks are on you, loser." He's cackling, exaggerating a laugh directly in his buddy's ear.

Your hand slaps the table to get their attention. "Did you two bet on this?"

The idiots look stunned for a split second.

"To be fair, the over-under was on three months," José says.

"And we just assumed we both lost," Dimitri adds, grinning, "until NOW!"

Ari's chuckling, too, focused down at his nearly empty beer glass, letting his hand sweep back and forth across the strap of your tank top.

While the other two bicker more about the agreed prize, Ari leans back over to your cheek again.

"I'm glad though." He pecks right beside your ear. "I'd rather it be right than have screwed this up back then."

He's right. You waited and you're both better for it, better for yourselves and better for each other.

You do sorta wish the two idiots hadn't seen it before you though. That stings.

Oh well.

You turn your head and kiss your boyfriend in public for the first time, but the most wonderful part--the thing that hasn't changed--is that you're still seated by your best friend.

Tell me why I cried at the end of this? What the hell? What have I started???

no actually i wont stop inserting my blorbos into other properties.

anyway.

i saw hadestown on tour this summer and im never going to emotionally or spiritually recover. and i have a lot of thoughts about this au!! long-winded rambling under the cut

so casting: Orpheus: Jade Eurydice: Aradia Hermes: Rose Hades: Jane (Crockertier mode, primarily) Persephone: Roxy The fates are representative of like. Aradia's ghost voices. I don't super know how to convey that visually. ANYWAY!! I just think that the dynamic between Orpheus and Eurydice in the way Hadestown tells their story gets very much to the heart of what I think is so interesting about AraJade, and that's the like.... Conflicting worldviews they have. I think that conflict, despite frustrating them at times, is part of what pulls them toward each other. Aradia (and Eurydice) are like... Kind of tragic characters! They have been through a lot, and while Aradia is very positive, and Eurydice is prepared to crack jokes, their worldviews boil down to "The universe is uncaring, and fate bears down on us no matter what choices we make. But FUCK it, I am going to live anyway. I'm going to do whatever the hell I have to do to keep going as an act of rebellion."

Jade (and Orpheus) however, still manage to be optimistic, not just about their own prospects, but about the world. When problems arise, they're not just going to ignore them and try to press on as things get worse. They're going to try to solve the problem! They're going to put that responsibility on themselves. It might speak to a level of overconfidence, or naivete, sure. But it also speaks to an overabundance of compassion for the people around it. They're not just going to fix things for themselves, but for everybody.

So when they meet, and Jade says "YES the world is difficult, the seasons are wrong, the world is out of tune, but I am going to write a song that will fix it." Aradia is understandably skeptical! She doesn't believe it until Jade shows her proof that her music has some otherworldly power (which. shakes her worldview obviously and she kind of fucking LOVES that?) But Rose (Hermes) says this girl will make her feel alive again, and to Aradia, "that's worth a lot" Speaking of Rose, idk. I was torn on who to put in Hermes' place. But Rose is established as both a Seer, and a storyteller. To repeatedly narrate a story whose tragic ending she's already seen play out a thousand times, just because it's beautiful and hey, maybe it'll turn out different this time (even though it never has before.) IDK ITS JUST A ROSE VIBE 2 ME! Plus Hermes has a friendly relationship with Orpheus, he wants him to succeed, but he's also not afraid to pull punches when criticizing him. I think that's a good dynamic for Rose and Jade.

I also waffled around for a while about Hades and Persephone, but in the end Persephone really HAD to be Roxy. It's not just about the alcoholism recovery arc they both share, it's about Persephone as a daughter missing her mother, and as a figure known to everyone around her as funny and generous and just kind of this universally-beloved figure who behind the scenes is REALLY struggling to cope with her own emotions. The Roxy vibes are truly off the charts. So given that, Jane made the best Hades, I think. Jane as Hades isn't the MOST compelling matchup in this to me, but I think she fits into the role well enough. First off, she really DOES love Roxy. But as they drift apart over time, and in the absence of any other real positive influences, she just kinda... Falls into the capitalism thing a little too hardcore. She misses Roxy and maybe to start with she really DOES think that if she can make enough progress in her work that it will impress Roxy enough to maybe stay a little longer than usual, but well. Industrial progress is not what impresses Roxy! And Jane is.... A little stubborn about her worldview, and has become extremely busy with her work, and doesn't really pay close enough attention to Roxy's feelings to notice all that, so. Things decay rapidly, and it becomes a point of conflict between them. But in the end we DO get to see them taking the first steps towards resolving things. Because frankly I think they would! They just care too much about each other at the end of the day.

I've been playing Fates again (thanks gay fates mod ily kiss kiss) and after (re)reading through counter-critiques of its story and generally thinking about it again I'm kinda left with the following thoughts and wanted to share as you're our resident Fates Was Good, Actually blogger.

a) so much of Fates critique falls into cinemasins-level "this isn't explicitly stated therefore BAD" territory (or otherwise stuff that shouldn't be, and often isn't, a problem in other games in the series)

b) we wouldn't need to bring up the Japanese script in contrast with the localization in the first place if the fandom hadn't completely poisoned the well in regards to talking about Fates' story. I had no idea about any of the localization changes my first play-through and I still thought Fates' plot was fine. Good, even!

The fatescourse is what made me leave the fandom around the time 3H came out, and every time I take a peek back in the subreddit or other fandom spaces it still seems to be just as much of a toxic cesspool as ever. Which sucks because I want to talk about Blorbo from my Emblems again, but I really don't want to have to deal with The Discourse & general toxicity

For your first point, yeah, that's what it feels like. Saying it's CinemaSins-esque feels like a low blow, but it honestly does remind me of those videos. And they aren't meant to be actual critique! They're sarcastic entertainment and little else! But so much of Fates criticism is "why doesn't X just do Y? never explained by in-game text, so therefore story bad" or "why isn't Z plot point expanded upon? game never tells me so story bad." It's cheap and shallow, above all else. It's reminiscent of the Blue Curtains literary discourse, in that people only go with what's written explicitly rather than connect the dots from plot point to plot point. You're supposed to connect Azura's pacifying song to Mikoto's pacifying magic to Valla's history of magical development due to being directly blessed by Anankos; same with the crystal ball, water motifs, and future sight, those are all Valla-centered traits. But because the game never says "oh this is because of Valla", people think the place is just a nameless evil nation with no history or unique aspects.

For your second point, god, yes. Soooo many take any localization criticism as either a) alignment with unsavory anti-censorship anti-sjw chuds who are mostly complaining about not getting to boink lolis or b) not worth the time because "it wasn't gonna make a bad story any better anyway" which is such a gutter thing to say because localizations have literally changed things and removed crucial information in the series before Fates. The big examples being stuff with the Black Knight in the Tellius games, the long script removal in Radiant Dawn, and lines relating to Nergal's backstory in FE7 being mistranslated. Awakening had its share of localization discourse and criticism due to characters like Henry being changed, as well.

And I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a little resentful that 3H of all games is when people started giving a shit, cuz now that a "good game with a good story is being affected, it's now worth our time."

Plus this shit is still happening, considering that FEH consistently gets stuff wrong or mistranslated to this day.

Anyway! Sad bangers are my jam, and I wanted something that conveyed the grief of losing someone, but giving the energy a bit of a kick after the Breeders song

I'm a basic bitch who loves Mitski, what can I say?

No, this song is for the Gareth sad spiral (TM) and for the fact that sad smoking is cool, actually (don't @ me)

This is a Shepherd song, you know, the beginning of her terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad nervous breakdown.

There was an earlier version of LBEL which was much more actively about Shepherd trying to bring Cerberus down from the inside: but actually now I think the lyrics speak much more to Shepherd feeling like she always has to fit the mold of the pragmatic, practical soldier

This is thee Garrus song, sorry I don't make the rules. The lost friends! Carrying on despite that loss!!! Dutyyy

Gareth is kind of an old soul, which is why his songs lean slightly more retro - and just the deep well of yearning in this song always gets me. It's very much his feelings after Shepherd saves him, loving her and wishing he didn’t

I primarily associate this song with Shepherd being discarded by the Hierarchy and the struggles she has with knowing protocol is to kill herself

8. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - The Beatles

Gareth: conceal, don't feel 😢 I have always loved this song and it's very much Gareth knowing that he can't be open about his feelings

More good mental health time for Shepherd, excellent. I don’t mind repeating artists in my playlists but I do tend to keep it to one

The one thing I am actually a snob about with playlists is not using too many "popular" songs, but I did like this one for Horizon. Shepherd's really starting to spiral here, folks

Horizon sex, Shepherd POV. She's so lonely in this fic, really longing for connection, and this song is the words she doesn't know how to say

12. Baby I Got the Death Rattle - Los Campesinos!

Horizon sex, Gareth POV

This is one of those songs that doesn't start as a blorbo song, but if you tell me you've heard a lyric that's more "Garrus Vakarian down bad" than "Baby I got the death rattle and baby I got it bad | I've been digging my own grave for quite some time when I'm not digging up the past" then I would love to hear it

13. Bedroom Eyes - Dum Dum Girls

One of my favourite bits of LBEL is the quiet intimacy that Gareth and Shepherd have when they're sleeping together, and this song reflects that

14. Hopeless - Screaming Females

Shepherd dumping Gareth because she likes him too much 😭 I'm fine. The lyrics and the vocals are so plaintive, again the emotions Shepherd won't allow herself to express

15. Something Bigger, Something Brighter - Pretty Girls Make Graves

This isn't a terribly literal inclusion, it's a good angsty-sounding song for where Shepherd's at post-breakup

16. Heavy Metal Heart - Sky Ferreira

This is just. Shepherd's song 💖 I love it, and her

17. Apocalypse Now (&Later) - Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers

This is a great Mass Effect 2 song more broadly but man is it perfect for Gareth and Shep reuniting just before the suicide mission!!!

18. The Hand That Feeds - Nine Inch Nails

Fuck Cerberus, part 1. There just is not a better song for being done with someone else's bullshit

19. Search and Destroy - Peaches

Fuck Cerberus, part 2 (or, how Shepherd got her groove back). Peaches always has such brilliant swagger and I adore this cover - Shepherd coming back into her own power and recognising how dangerous (and unpredictable) she can be

20. I Would Find You - Oceanator

I adore this song, the softness and kindness at the end of the world. It's really the thesis statement of the fic, and a promise for Gareth and Shepherd going forward, even through the hard times. It was the perfect grace note to end on

How is 'no children' misrepresented and what is it actually about? <- genuinely curious and likes people ranting about things like this (and only really knows about the 'hand in unlovable hand' line though maybe that's part of the problem(?))

oh god okay so. how much tmg lore do you want because if we want to get into no children we're gonna get into the alpha couple and they've literally been present in the music since the very first tape ever released under the name the mountain goats over 30 years ago. actually yknow what it's 2am I don't want to mess things up I'll just give you this:

that's the backstory that's what no children is about. the song is so named because (paraphrasing a quote) "if there's one thing I know about this couple it's that the world will be better for it if they never have children". and here's the thing is that no children is a REALLY cathartic song I don't fault people for enjoying it and god knows that it's fun to belt at concerts but it is NOT a love song. it is not a song about a relationship that is in any way good or stable or healthy. it is about a couple that are bad for eachother and for everyone around them and should get divorced but are never going to because filing those papers is a few hundred bucks and you can buy a lot of alcohol with that money. please understand that: they aren't a tragic mutually doomed couple who despite that love each other. they are actively dragging the both of them to their graves because they're too far in to turn around now. they've been drinking for decades like it'll fix their problems and it never will and things only ever get angrier and louder and more destructive and worse so they just keep fucking digging the graves they've been digging since the beginning. first rule of holes is stop digging second rule is that once you do you're still in a hole but they're never even gonna get the first one and they sure as hell aren't ever going to acknowledge that they're in a deep deep hole much less would they try to get out. no children is about wanting the worst for yourself and your better half because it's the only way you can see any of it ending. no children is slinging insults across the living room several drinks deep into the evening at the person you married and realising that you fucking mean it when you say you hope it all goes to shit and takes the both of you down with it.

no children isn't the tragic otp. no children says "I hope I lie and tell everyone you were a good wife" and "I hope when you think of me years down the line you can't find one good thing to say / and I hope that if I found the strength to walk out you'd stay the hell out of my way" and it means every goddamn word when it says them. and I know people like "hand in unloveable hand / and I hope you die / I hope we both die" but they ALWAYS use that quote in a "it doesn't matter if we're unloveable because we're hand in hand" kind of way and that's just completely fucking wrong. if you're going to use no children for your blorbos fucking commit to it, they better be a couple that is genuinely entirely going to bury each other alive for the sheer goddamn fact that they would rather die than try to stop digging.

anyway. go listen to Tallahassee (album) because it is genuinely extremely fucking good and no children probably isn't even in my top three songs from that album.

Been thinking about daring to try to get into vidding (but I have zero knowledge about video editing lol) and wondered if there are ship manifestos that are in fanvid-form, so to say. Am shocked that there are only six on AO3. Though I guess it may have to do with videos being taken down because of copyright stuff?

(One of them was by you by the way if I'm not mistaken, ha! And now I want to watch Veritas: The Quest. Your video got me interested.^^)

Veritas is a fun dumb time. It makes me sad that they never released properly. (And yes, my love of baaaaaad "archaeology" canons full of magical woo and tomb raiding goes way back. Also my love of fake death and fake betrayal plots.)

AO3 is only moderately popular for fanvids, and mostly in a very specific community of people who send vids to the small-scale fancons—the sorts of people who founded OTW and who were vidding on Livejournal. (It won't be because of takedowns. The AO3 work would still be there, just with a dead embed.) That lack of popularity overall is part of why you don't see so many video manifestos, but I think it's more a terminology thing:

I think it's rare for vidders to call their vids "manifestos". I don't think of that one video as a vid that is a manifesto: I think of it as a vid I made to include in a manifesto. Instead, we tend to call them "pimp vids", but you don't tag with that because it's presumptuous. It's something you say retroactively about other people's vids or that you tell a vid beta you're aiming for. You don't get to decide if your vid successfully pimps people in any more than you get a say in whether you go viral, you know?

There's a weekly vidders' zoom run by DC Slash (one of the tiny slash cons), and we just had a week where we brought in vids that got us into fandoms. A lot of other people's were ancient, blurry VCR transfers because they've been at this a lot longer than I have, but I can show you some of the vids that have gotten me into fandoms:

Killa's Haven vid Soldier annoyed me so much. What is that one brief flash of a scene? Did that dude die? It's not that sad a vid though? What the hell? So I had to watch just to find out. (Yes, he died. But he got better. Because Haven.)

The fact that I know and like Killa didn't hurt, but it's not like I loved the vid itself: a lot of it was my sheer annoyance at that one shot.

Of course, then, I made my own Haven vid, Captain Kidd, that was supposed to be an angry deep dive into show lore and how the other sanctimonious, fake-moral but actually pretty useless characters were treating my blorbo. (This is a theme with me, it appears.) It was not even 1% supposed to be a pimp vid...

To date, this is by far my most successful pimp vid, luring a whole bunch of people into the show just in time for it to massively jump the shark. (Damn it.) I've never even seen the ending.

More recently, akiv's Beyond Evil vid I'm a Ruler made me fall hard for Beyond Evil. Imagine my shock when what looked like a relatively normal buddy cop series starts with one of them secretly investigating the other as a serial killer. It was so much more intense and fucked up than I realized! Yessss.

After bouncing hard off of DMBJ, it was this Youtube vid Hei Ye falling for the Thorny Flower that got me intrigued again. The tone is so obvious and the dynamic is so clear, which really helped me get interested in a franchise that's often pretty hard to follow plot-wise.

I admit I never actually watched canon, but this Mr. Queen vid by Mozzaphne made me go look up a plot summary so I could read all of the fic. Lots of youtube vidders overuse show dialogue and mix it horribly over songs, but this one was really well done and adds a lot to your understanding of the character dynamics.

I don't think my foray into Detroit: Become Human was entirely because of a single vid, but Figure 8 by Dirty Mind Gene definitely helped. I knew it was a video game with robots. Nobody fucking told me it was a Caves of Steel ripoff with a jaded cop getting his mojo back via getting to know his robot partner.

I of course then went and made one with all of the zillions of deaths in the game because I love that shit. This apparently also got at least one person into the fandom.

Another vid a different person mentioned pimping them into a fandom was Lola's Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty vid ME!

It's a fabulous vid, and it's a fantastic illustration of how the central (canon) ship is supposed to read. Sadly, my personal opinion of the show is that Tang Fan is a perpetual victim and piece of shit who puts his own shallow grasp of morality and his personal feelings over the greater good, often getting characters killed unnecessarily. (I hear this is largely due to some questionable adaptation choices where they swapped who's the hothead and who's the one cleaning up messes.)

I've noticed that fluffy bunnies who watch the show tend to think Tang Fan is ~nice~ because he spouts modern morality instead of a selfish little bitch because he refuses to face the reality of the setting he's in and find the best real world solution instead of holding out for an ideal he'll never attain and thus making everything ten times worse. It reminds me forcibly of tumblr wank where people see themselves as these great moral leaders but lack all grasp of nuance. Their sensitivity extends only to their own feelings.

Yes, Sleuth left me with a lot of rage...

How dare the writing pretend like Tang Fan is the moral arbiter of anything, when my own personal fave, whom half the cast thinks is a villain, is constantly cleaning up after him, trying to keep the body count low, trying to maintain order as everybody else flies out of control...

And then the show made it all better by tormenting Tang Fan in the iddiest way possible. Ohohoho. It's not just that he gets his face rubbed in his own inadequacy and inability to save people. It's the ridiculously over-the-top flashback to "You're my only friend" right in the middle of the death scene. Way to twist the knife!

I, of course, have made my own vid for this fandom, Tiny, Pretty & Angry, and it is absolutely a manifesto, just not a ship one. It's a manifesto about how Wang Zhi is not only the most competent, but also the actual moral center of everything and fuck all of y'all if you don't agree.

In fact, there's probably another reason we don't call them manifestos:

In the oldschool Media Fandom vidding traditions, most vids are video essays and manifestos, really. That's a lot of the point of the aesthetic: making an argument. Partly due to technological limitations and partly due to vidding being innovated by slashers who were constantly challenged about their ships, the pretty visual spectacle styles so common in AMVs and currently on Youtube were largely absent. Meta argument was everything. That's the default.

Here's another one of mine that's pretty explicitly a fuck you to how most people in Untamed fandom see Wen Ning.

☆ Here's why we should talk more about 'Back off' and it's impact on Kanata's character ☆

- Okay, as a certified Back Off lover you guys SHOULD appreciate it more. Not only cause the song itself is good, but also for the LYRICS. They're so important for Kanata as a character (We're making this about the blorbo again❤️). As you all know by now, Cozmez songs have very similar lyrics, mostly talking about their struggles on the streets, and Back off isn't an exception. BUT! The lyrics here are actually amazing to analyze and better understand where Kanata was coming from in the Live VD. Let me enlighten you.

☆ We're focusing on Nayuta's parts in the pre choruses for this!! Keep in mind this is from Exhibition Show, so this Nayuta is still an illusion created by Kanata.

"All the enemies we kicked down from our road, our wounds from the past may never be erased. But we won't make it fade, this daydream. We won't look back, come on now we gotta go"

- I think this is pretty self explanatory. But let's highlight the most important part.

"But we won't make it fade, this daydream".

- Alright! Since this is Kanata's self made lyrics, we can assume some stuff. If I recall correctly, Exhibition show was just before Live. And we know that across the story Kanata got a few hints that slowly unlocked the trauma of Nayu's death. While this memory was buried deep in Kanata's subconscious as self defence to deal with the Trauma, he was constantly acting and saying things clearly influenced by the fact. POINT IS, Kanata probably wrote these lyrics subconsciously, knowing deep inside this Nayuta was an illusion and he was living "A Daydream" he didn't want to fade. If he WAS self aware, the Nayu Illusion would've disappeared right away, so this def was an accident. So this is, once again, a little peek into Kanata's subconscious mind. And the way this line was given to Nayuta is probs coincidence on Kanata's line distributions, something very accurate he did without thinking it was important. One can do so many things without thinking about it, but all our actions are defined by our Souls to put it simply. And that's the case with Kanata 99% of the time...

- THE MOST IMPORTANT LYRICS HERE. I'm not even highlighting a single part cause every part of this is important. I am dividing it tho

- Now, I'm not sure if this one take can apply to these lyrics, but I'm saying it either way. With "the yesterday" I don't think we're talking solely about their life on the streets, but also about Nayu's death. This is more assumption than anything, but I think this refers to Nayu's death reflecting on Kanata as a person and being what made him create the illusion in the first place, and after its creation, Nayu's death became "history" since we have a direct replacement to pretend it never happened. Keeping in mind this is written by Kanata, we can blame his subconscious actions for this one (again). There's also something about most of these more meaningful lines being sung by Nayuta instead of Kanata that give me a feeling Kanata felt icky singing these, since they have bits of truth even if he couldn't notice at the moment, so he gave them to Nayuta instead. Now the next line will make this statement make more sense, trust me. ✊

"If you win, your dreams come true, it's all I need."

- This bit is satisfying in a sad way cause it directly ties to what Kanata says later in Live. Kanata talks about how he kept using Nayuta as an excuse to fulfill his own dreams, convincing himself he was doing everything for Nayuta. I've been saying the line distributions were probs made at random by Kanata, but I don't think this one was. Kanata WANTED fake Nayuta to sing this one to be reassured that he wasn't being selfish for trying to do something for himself without considering Nayu. This might make him sound like an insane guy, but please don't interpret it like that. Kanata IS traumatized, and back when this was made it was even worse (rn he's healing). He was just desperately trying to justify his actions and give himself a little comfort to feel better, I wouldn't want anyone to come out of this thinking badly about Kanata.

☆ Now I can't close the post without saying the writers are absolute GENIUSES for coming up with this. The way every single lyric can tie up to everything that happened after is insane. This is what I meant when saying "this helps you understand where Kanata was coming from in Live". Pararai literally had all the hints RIGHT THERE and most didn't even notice... This one song alone really helps you understand Kanata's coping mechanisms with hidden messages of his mind DESPERATELY trying to get him back on track, with Kanata just being extremely stubborn and ignoring every single signal until the illusion disappeared. And this is why Kanata is one of the best representations of what happens if you stay in stage 1 of the 5 stages of grief (Denial).
