Bridges, Portland, 2016.
After the recent catastrophe in Baltimore, I wonder about the structural integrity of bridges, especially those crossing shipping routes like the Willamette in and near Portland. It would be an urban nightmare if one or more of those bridges were to be destroyed. Given how close together the bridges crossing from the central business district are, it is not difficult to imagine an out-of-control ship taking out two or more of them. The least likely to fail is the Fremont Bridge pictured in the last photo, while Steel Bridge and the Broadway Bridge, quite close together, could be victims of a dual bridge disaster. Probably will not happen, but...

Steel Bridge - September 2023
The White Pass Railroad follows mostly along the path of the original railroad, but modern construction techniques have allowed them to carve a much better path through the rocks and cliffs of the pass. The original route used a very long, very high steel bridge to cross over the canyon. It is no longer used and the non-steel portions of it have collapsed. The ruins of that once great structure make a very good image.

Downtown Pittsburgh from the "hot metal" bridge over the Monongahela River. The bridge is now part of the Pittsburgh heritage bike trail. In the past, the Hot Metal Bridge connected parts of the J&L Steel mill, carrying crucibles of molten iron from the blast furnaces in ladle transfer cars to the open hearth furnaces on the opposite bank.
