How Poisoned Tylenol Became a Crisis-Management Teaching Model
The killer’s motives remain unknown, but his — or her, or their — technical savvy is as chilling today as it was 30 years ago.
On Sept. 29, 1982, three people died in the Chicago area after taking cyanide-laced Tylenol at the outset of a poisoning spree that would claim seven lives by Oct. 1. The case has never been solved, and so the lingering question — why? — still haunts investigators.
According to TIME’s 1982 report, Food and Drug Administration officials hypothesized that the killer bought Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules over the counter, injected cyanide into the red half of the capsules, resealed the bottles, and sneaked them back onto the shelves of drug and grocery stores. The Illinois attorney general, on the other hand, suspected a disgruntled employee on Tylenol’s factory line. In either case, it was a sophisticated and ambitious undertaking with the seemingly pathological goal of killing strangers entirely at random. Their symptoms and sudden deaths confounded doctors until the link was discovered, traced back to identical pill bottles that each smelled like almonds — the telltale scent of cyanide. The perpetrator left no margin for error, filling the capsules with poison at thousands of times the amount needed to be fatal.
One victim, 27-year-old Adam Janus, took Tylenol for minor chest pain and died within hours. His younger brother and sister-in-law were killed after taking pills from the same bottle while grieving the sudden, shocking loss at Janus’ house.
TIME’s Susan Tifft wrote of the tragedy’s victims on Oct. 11, 1982:
Twelve-year-old Mary Kellerman of Elk Grove Village took Extra-Strength Tylenol to ward off a cold that had been dogging her. Mary Reiner, 27… had recently given birth to her fourth child. Paula Prince, 35, a United Airlines stewardess, was found dead in her Chicago apartment, an open bottle of Extra-Strength Tylenol near by in the bathroom. Says Dr. Kim [the chief of critical care at Northwest Community Hospital]: “The victims never had a chance. Death was certain within minutes.”
Without a suspect to revile, public outrage could have fallen squarely on Tylenol — the nation’s leading painkiller, with a market share greater than the next four top painkillers combined — and its parent corporation, Johnson & Johnson. Instead, by quickly recalling all of its products from store shelves, a move that cost Johnson & Johnson millions of dollars, the company emerged as another victim of the crime and one that put customer safety above profit. It even issued national warnings urging the public not to take Tylenol and established a hotline for worried customers to call.
Tylenol relatively quickly reestablished its brand, recovering the entire market share it lost during the cyanide scare. Though things could have gone very differently, the episode’s most lasting legacy has been in the annals of public relations, not poison control: the case has since become a model for effective corporate crisis management.

Hollywood has made tons of memorable Christmas films. There are also quite a few films which celebrate Halloween. On the other hand, it is rare that they make movies about Thanksgiving, and when they do, they are mostly dysfunctional family angst-fests – like Home for the Holidays.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is really the only thing you could really call a Thanksgiving standard – a turkey day movie experience worth revisiting annually. (Unless you perhaps count TV specials like A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.) And while the movie doesn’t technically have much to do with the holiday – only the final scenes have turkey, cranberries and family – it captures the idea of a family Thanksgiving better than any other film I can think of.
Pretty good for a slapstick farce road-trip movie.
At the point, this movie was the latest in a historic hot streak by writer/director John Hughes – which included National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Pretty in Pink. It was also Hughes’ first film that did not revolve around teenagers (though Vacation was about two generations of a family).
Planes, Trains and Automobiles was Hughes’ first adult film, but that didn’t mean it was mature or serious.
The storyline could not be simpler. Two businessmen who are in New York need to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving. They meet by chance while traveling, and when a series of mini-disasters – including a snowstorm – sidetrack their trip, they have to use all of the title vehicles in an attempt to get back home.
In the meantime, they must deal with each other, which they would never do if they weren’t in such dire straits. Steve Martin’s character of Neal Page is an uptight, private, angry, slightly snobbish man. John Candy’s Del Griffith is much more upbeat, loud, tacky, slightly obnoxious, but generally a very optimistic, positive man.
They weather a whole series of mishaps – including crashes, fires, missed opportunities, dealings with criminals and cops, seedy motels, mini-bottles of alcohol, and accidental spooning – on the road to get home for turkey dinner. And along the way, they come to have a grudging respect for each other, maybe even kind of like each other.
The work of these two great old comedy pros is still a wonder thirty years later. Martin generously plays the straight man, yielding many of the best laughs to co-star Candy. About 25 years on from his way-too-early death, this film reminds us what a spectacular comic force Candy was; smart, fearless, and not afraid to make a complete fool of himself. His talent is greatly missed.
As is the talent of writer/director Hughes, who also died way too young. In certain ways, Planes, Trains and Automobile is very much a product of its time – for example some of that Harold Faltermeyer-lite background music and some of the wild slapstick set pieces. But, in other ways it is timeless.
Just like Thanksgiving.
If you are going to watch any movie about Thanksgiving, this is the one.

Tailgate wrap on Missouri man’s truck showing bound and gagged woman sparks outrage
FENTON, Mo. – An image on the back of a truck in Missouri has a lot of people talking.
It shows a woman restrained and scantily dressed.
While some are offended by the image, the man who bought it and put the tailgate wrap on his truck says people are overreacting. In the picture, a woman has her hands and feet bound and her mouth gagged.
Susan Cunningham saw it as she was driving on Highway 141.
“It was offensive. It was absolutely offensive. It looked like, you know, he was trying to make it look like there was somebody bound in the back of his truck,” Cunningham told KTVI.
On social media and in person, the image is provoking strong reactions.
“It’s horrifying. When you showed it to me my heart sank because nobody wants to see that,” Pam Kellerman from Union, Missouri said.
“Personally, I don’t really care. I guess to each his own. I wouldn’t personally put it on my truck,” Ricky Williams from Barnhart, Missouri said.
Barb Tenholder is worried about the message that the image sends. She’s the director of A Safe Place, a Jefferson County shelter for women escaping domestic violence and sexual assault.
“I feel it is really promoting violence against women,” she said. “It makes me angry that someone would use that as some form of art or some way to decorate their vehicle.”
Ben Sexton, a father of four who is engaged, said he’s had the wrap on his truck for about four months.
“I thought it was comical and funny,” he said. “I didn’t do it to degrade women or anything like that. I put it on there for the humor side of it.”
Sexton, 42, said he had nothing but positive comments about the wrap until the image showed up this week on social media.
He said while he understands people’s concerns, he believes they are unwarranted.
“She’s not tied up against her will,” Sexton said. “Her clothes aren’t roughed up, her hair’s not all messed up, she doesn’t have tears in her eyes, it’s not a forcible tied up kind of thing.”
Law officers from two agencies tell us they don’t believe the image is illegal but possibly morally questionable.
Another law enforcement source says if someone caused a crash because they were distracted by the image then the driver of the truck with the picture could be cited for careless and imprudent driving.
Sexton said he has no intentions of removing the image.
“It is my truck, it is my choice, it is my decision on what I put on there,” Sexton said.
Pat responded, “He needs to take it off.”
Through an eBay ad, KTVI tracked down a Midwest company which makes the tailgate wraps. The first time KTVI spoke to them, they confirmed they made the wrap in question. The second time they denied making it.
Not long after the conversations, the eBay ad was removed. The company’s phones went unanswered a short time later.
