On my way to drop some paintings off to a local gallery I decided to stop off here at Rhossili bay in the Gower area of Swansea, so lucky to have this just twenty minutes from my doorstep...

Wreck of the Helvetia, Rhossili, Wales
The Norwegian-built barque Helvetia was scheduled to sail from New Brunswick, Canada, to Swansea Harbour in October 1887, loaded with 500 tonnes of timber. Just 5 miles from the harbour, strong winds forced the ship to remain at sea for the night, in the hope that conditions would improve the following day. The next morning the Helvetia was blown through the water, damaging the boat and ending up in Rhossili Bay.
The anchor was dropped, but this wasn’t enough to safeguard the ship, and the reluctant captain and his crew were forced to abandon the Helvetia, which they did safely. By the next day, the Helvetia was stranded and its timber cargo strewn across the beach. This precious debris was collected and sold by local timber merchants, while the Helvetia slowly sank deeper into the sands over the next century. Parts of it still protrude up onto the beach.

Not to come to you as the All Holy Grail of Welsh University Wisdom buuuut... is the university you work for reliant on public transport? I'm in my final year at Swansea and they've announced they're cutting almost every single service to Bay Campus at the end of the month, meaning there's one reliable bus service to and from the campus that comes every 30 minutes. It's apparently(?) from Drakeford cutting the funding in that area but it's a bit of a mess. I just wanted to know if this was a universal cock up or not, since (well, other than trains), every other transport method has been fine the last few years?
Nah, the uni I work at built a brand new campus in 2018 and literally forgot to make sure there were any public transport links to it. There are zero buses. Not even a Santander Cycles stop. It's entirely dependent on cars or walking, and it's by the sea, so if you walk (which I do) there's a few months over winter where you get sandblasted or blown into the marina. One of my students is about to launch a campaign to get a bus service there, actually. One bus every 30 minutes sounds amazing lol

" Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton at the Great Hall in Swansea University Bay Campus in Wales on Nov. 16, 2023.
ON TUESDAY, FORMER Secretary of State Hillary Clinton published an opinion piece in The Atlantic headlined “Hamas Must Go.” Why does she believe this? The subhead explains: “The terror group has proved again and again that it will sabotage any efforts to forge a lasting peace.”
The article is the latest chapter of Clinton’s press tour following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks, including an appearance on the daytime talk show “The View.” Both in The Atlantic and on “The View,” Clinton explained why a ceasefire in Israel’s current war on Gaza would be a terrible mistake."
" The degree to which Clinton’s Atlantic essay is riddled with historical inaccuracies is startling, especially given that she brags about her “decades of experience in the region.” The article begins in November 2012 with a tale of her knocking on the door of President Barack Obama’s hotel room early in the morning during a visit to Cambodia. “Then, like now,” Clinton writes, “the extreme Islamist terror group Hamas had sparked a crisis by indiscriminately attacking Israeli civilians.” She and Obama debated whether she should fly to the Middle East and try to broker a ceasefire in what Israel had dubbed Operation Pillar of Defense. "

Day Eighty-six
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a brand new day by the Clyne River, so it's up and at 'em to start off with a roll down the trails and out to the coast once more by Blackpill.
It's a dreary morning with grey skies and a rainy mist obscuring the sight across most of Swansea Bay, but the cool air and lack of wind make for some good riding conditions as I take advantage of the great cycling paths around the coastline around to Swansea.
After a stopoff in the city centre for supplies, it's a pleasant ride around the Maritime Quarter before NCN Route 4 crosses over the River Tawe and carries on eastwards.
The trail keeps firmly out of the traffic which I am grateful for, as the roads here are very busy with the proximity of a junction with the M4 motorway. The cycle route loops around and under the flyovers before crossing the River Neath into Briton Ferry.
I'm finally away from riding alongside busy roads for a stretch as the route dips down into Port Talbot, which then gives way to some large industrial areas and steel mills along the coast.
I've a busy junction to navigate by Margam, with Route 4 departing up into the hills at this point. So it's back to the road for now, tracking next to the motorway before tracking back across the M4 for a ride through Kenfig National Nature Reserve.
The weather alas has decided this is its time to roll in though, and with little buildup a torrential amount of rain begins to pour down. I'm fortunately able to throw the waterproofs on in short order, and after a bit more riding through the downpour am able to duck in to a bus shelter to let the worst pass.
With the rain down to a light drizzle, I carry on down to the sea once more at Porthcawl. The waterfront is quite nice and I'm sure on a sunny day it'd be a beautiful spot!
The wet is continuing though, and with no road through Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve, it's a long slog up the hills back inland to head into Bridgend.
The rains have abated for now, so I have a bit of a break after navigating some of the interesting parhways bolted over the Ogmore River here.
I head out south from Bridgend towards Ewenny, where I can jump on to Route 88 as it heads back down around the coast of the Bristol Channel. It's a steep climb up initially, but eventually the trail leads on through some rolling hills and pretty country lanes.
With the skies clearing, I'm eventually able to get a good sight of England's coast and Exmoor National Park across the water.
I taje a brief detour at Marcross to go check out the lighthouse at Nash Point, which is set on some nice cliffs, before heading back up and on to the wonderfully named Llantwit Major.
Route 88 heads up to the hills further from the coast at this juncture, and with the afternoon wearing on I decide to stick with the coast and start chugging along the B4265 as it rolls along eastwards. It offers a few more nice views across the channel, before getting hemmed in with greenery once more.
As the road leads on by Cardiff Airport, I'm starting to feel it's time to get aome rest in, and with the forecast threat the possibility of hail later, I'd rather not leave it too late before finding a spot.
Thankfully there are a good few copses and trees not too far from the main road, and a short ride later I find a good sheltered pitch that should hold up for the night.
The border is fast approaching! The forecast for tomorrow doesn't look great so far, but we'll see what the morning holds.
TTFN!

Sunday, June 5, 2022 | Swansea, Wales | 10:32 p.m.
We started the day with a trip to the Dylan Thomas Birthplace, the house where he was born and lived until he was in his 20s. He produced 2/3 of his published works there, and many of his poems and stories are grounded in the landscape and community where he grew up. His house is recreated inside to look like it did when he lived there, but it is a living house that hosts events and people can even rent it out as a bed and breakfast. All the furniture and decorations are either from the period or replicas, and visitors are allowed to touch and explore everything. I even wrote a poem (which I posted earlier) sitting at the vanity in the guest room!

At the house, we had a workshop on the Welsh poetry form cynghanedd, which incorporates lots of alliteration and assonance in specific combinations.
We had a delicious Welsh lunch buffet at the house made with all local ingredients. A taste of Wales for sure!
We drove to two scenic spots, Arthur’s Stone (not where King Arthur pulled the sword from, just a local name) and Rhossili Bay. Arthur’s Stone is a monolith, a human-made stone structure made during the Neolithic age. Stonehenge is the most famous example of a monolith. There are many theories about why they were made: rituals, structure for burial mounds, place markers for nomadic tribes. Pam’s favorite theory is that they acted as picture frames, outlining beautiful or meaningful parts of the landscape.
Tumblr media
Today was our first day with rainy weather but I actually loved it. It was very atmospheric. Rhossili Bay looked exactly like how I had pictured Wales before coming here: foggy air, craggy cliffs, green hills, grey ocean. It looked, in fact, just like the beach in my first post!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After some rest time in our hotel, we went to a reading by our two program directors, Pam Petro (my professor from Smith!) and Dominic Williams. Pam’s writing always makes me want to cry in the best way, and it was so exciting to get to know Dom’s writing after knowing him.
We had dinner at the same pub as last night and I ordered two (TWO!!) drinks that were both very delicious, a raspberry Bellini and a mojito. At dinner I sat at a table with Mary, our bus driver who is from Wales near our university. It was a very interesting way to learn more about life and culture here, she had a lot to say.
One thing I keep forgetting to mention about Wales is that absolutely no one wears a mask here, and neither do we in my program. Sometimes it feels weird and I’m hyper-conscious of my breathing and facial expressions, but sometimes it feels nice and free and normal. Cases are low here and we’re seldom anywhere crowded. It feels almost as if we’ve traveled backward (or maybe, hopefully, forward) to a time without a pandemic. It made me a little anxious at first but now I know I’ll miss it. Even without masks, I feel much safer here than in the US.
And another random tidbit, we have seen the CUTEST dogs here. It’s as if the Welsh have the best taste in dogs in the world. Lots of poodle mixes, spaniels, and mixed breed, soft, mid-size dogs with beautiful spots and speckles and soft ears. Each one cuter than the next! We even spied a litter of adorable border collie puppies in someone’s yard a few days ago!!
