Avatar Szeto to star in next Chronicles of the Avatar books?
(Art by Avatar News)
Avatar Szeto, the fire Avatar before Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang, and Korra, could be the main character of the next Chronicles of the Avatar novels.
In a recent interview with Nerds of Color, Chronicles of the Avatar writer F. C. Yee said he doesn't know if he'll be writing more books after Kyoshi and Yangchen, but "if he had his choice of what Avatar to tackle next, he named Avatar Szeto as a possible candidate." 👀🔥
F. C. Yee introduced Avatar Szeto's backstory in the Kyoshi books, revealing that he was born in a time of crisis in the Fire Nation due to natural disasters, plagues, and clan conflict. Instead of using his divine position as Avatar to enforce his rule, he joined the Fire Nation government as an entry-level bureaucrat and worked his way up with no special privileges until he was an advisor to the Fire Lord-- that's why he has that vizier-like hat in the few glimpses of him we see in Aang and Korra's eras.
But as we all know, there's more to every Avatar than their legacy, and in the Yangchen books we learn that Szeto's life was secretly messy and "a library of intrigue in the realm of spycraft and trickery".
His name comes from the Chinese Han dynasty title 司徒 (Sītú) meaning "Minister over the Masses".

The next Avatar listening to the life stories of all the Avatar’s before them for the first time and hears their advice on different topics and their big conclusion is
Them: You all need so much therapy. Like centuries worth of therapy.

ATLA Modern AU: Avatar Edition
This is going to be a slightly different post. I don't think people ever consider the past Avatars in an AU set in a modern setting. Where do you think they would come from, if they had IRL nationalities?
For sake of simplicity, let's say the AU takes place in the United States, since most ATLA Modern AU fics I've read take place there, mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area. We could also use NYC as the setting, since Republic City is roughly based on 1920's Manhattan. I think this task would be much easier if we consider the real-life influences for each of the four nations. I'll be using this post as a reference for these influences.
For example, the Air Nomads are based off of Tibetan Buddhists with some Nepalese and Bhutanese influences, so it would be pretty obvious to make Aang Tibetan in a Modern AU. The same would also go for Yangchen, although I would personally prefer Bhutanese or Sikkimese Yangchen because the Western Air Temple (I'm not talking about the episode) is inspired by Bhutanese cliffside temples. Another option would be making both Aang and Yangchen part of a Tibetan diaspora living in India. Kyoshi, being half-Air Nomad, would also be of Tibetan ancestry.
The Fire Nation is inspired by a combination of Chinese and Japanese cultures, while Ember Island being inspired by Southeast Asian, mostly Thai and Cambodian culture. In a Modern AU, I can see Roku being Thai, while Wan and Szeto would most likely be Chinese, Szeto is from Hong Kong/Macau. I also have a particular desire for Korean Wan, for no other reason than the fact that his VA, Steven Yeun, is Korean. I also wouldn't mind Wan being part of a Chinese diaspora from Malaysia or Singapore.
The Earth Kingdom, being the largest and most diverse of the four nations, is inspired by many Chinese dynasties, various ethnic minority groups in China, and even other Asian cultures altogether. However, we'll be paying attention to one specific cultural influence in Kyoshi's appearance: Heian/Edo Japan. She wears samurai gear and kabuki makeup. How in the name of the Moon Spirit am I not supposed to make Kyoshi Japanese (half-Japanese, anyway)? Kyoshi Island, formerly known as Yokoya, is literally ATLA's equivalent to Japan in the real world. There are even Ainu influences in Kyoshi Island, what with the clothing of the people in Suki's village.
The last nation is the Water Tribes, and the last two Avatars left are Kuruk and Korra. Now, the Water Tribes actually have a more diverse range of cultural influences than what we might expect. According to both @atlaculture and @kkachi95, the SWT is based on Inuit, Yupik and other First Nation peoples, with some Polynesian influences as well. The NWT, in addition to these influences, is also influenced by Mongolian and Siberian peoples. Since Kuruk is from the NWT, in a Modern AU, he would probably be Siberian, mostly Yakut, but I wouldn't mind Mongolian Kuruk either. For Korra, since she is half-NWT and half-SWT, I think she would be mixed like Kyoshi, except Korra would probably be half-Inuit, half-Yupik. I also want Kuruk and Korra to be part of a Mongolian or Central Asian diaspora living in Russia (I'll admit, I'm only saying this because I really want them to speak Russian), but that probably wouldn't work due to the differences in their cultures in-universe.
I have an idea for a Modern AU involving the Avatars, as well as their backstories for said AU, but that's for another time. For now, I turn this question over to you guys, and I want to know your thoughts on my nationality headcanons.

Avatar Rankings !!
(Based on how much I love them,,)
1. Roku and Kuruk (Tie)
2. Korra and Aang (Tie)
3. Kyoshi
4. Yangchen and Wan (Tie)
5. Szeto
I would add Gun and Salai but I know nothing much about them ,,
I wish I could read Yangchen and Kyoshis' books ,, I'm saving up to get my grabby hands on that Roku's book. (Maybe I'll even love them a little more that they're all on either 2nd or 3rd place but for now, this is their spot)
While I do mostly rely on Wiki, my memory gets all wacky that I have to summarize it and put it in my notes.
Anyways, I do like all of them. It is just the fact that I gush over Roku and Kuruk so much that they share a room in my brain ,, (They always make me smile)
I would elaborate why, and why but I feared the internet and their heavily mischaractization of each Avatars so I won't elaborate ,,

So one of the things I wanted most from the books about Kyoshi and Yangchen is finding new information about the former avatars. The problem is that we didn't really got new information about any avatars besides Szeto. We did got the names of two new avatars, Salai and Gun, but with Salai we don't know anything besides this name. I thought we would find more information about her in the books of Yangchen but they didn't mention again. We doesn't even know if Salai is a boy or girl.
So it's really bothered me so I decided to at least have some direction about Salai. I know many fans think he was the ground avatar before Szeto but I don't think it's make sense. One it's mostly a female name and I know you can give a female name to a boy as well but I do think Salai is a girl and not a boy. Secondly, the name is a hindi origin and the nation with hindi names are the air nomads, so I think because of the name origin Salai is most likely an air nomad avatar. Of course it's just my opintion and besides a name I don't have any information to base on but that's what I think.

For prompting night: a choice between 'Sokka discovers social media' (which would probably be a disaster lol) or 'a council of avatars probably not providing the best advice' (you know why). lol
Aang sighed. He had run all over the world, learned well from the monks, but he was no expert in politics and economics. Yet he was one of the few people who understood what a world at peace actually looked like, and the few who could be looked at as a trustworthy authority to all nations.
For a given value of trustworthy, Aang supposed.
Despite everyone looking at him, Aang knew he was not an expert at bureaucracy and politics and money. Luckily, he knew some who were.
He meditated, and looked as his past lives from the previous cycle spread out in front of him.
Roku looked to the side, then at him. "You require our advice, Aang?"
Aang nodded. "The Republic is a new and fragile experiment. There is also the peace between the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom at stake. They keep on talking about tax rates and trade routes, and I know they are important, but even Toph only knows so much about how it works and what's fair. Representatives are at each other's throats and getting ready to fight over it. What do I do?"
Roku stroked his beard. "Be decisive. Make sure that they settle on a plan, and stick to it."
Kuruk shook his head. "No, it sounds like they are just making threats to get more concessions. I know going with the flow was my biggest mistake, but people will work things out if you let them."
Kyoshi nodded sharply. "Be the end of diplomacy if you have trouble with politics. Working out solutions and deals are their job, their training. If they fail, come in full force as a threat to remind them the price of failing in their duty."
Yangchen shook her head. "No, you need to actively shape your destiny and the destiny of the world. Aang, make use of any assets and spies you have. If you have none, try developing a network so you have access to accurate information and know what pressure to apply. Keep a few cover identities in case one loyal to you is burned, or needs a new cover identity."
The other three looked at her. She raised an eyebrow back in challenge.
Coughing, Roku turned back. "Perhaps you should ask the Fire Avatar before me, Avatar Szeto."
"Would he understand the laws and regulations of Aang's time?" Kyoshi frowned.
"He would be better equipped than us."
Aang tilted his head. "Avatar Szeto? Didn't he write laws or something?"
"'Or something'. Through my reforms, the Fire Nation was able to achieve stability, and they were adopted elsewhere." Aang turned around to see another of his past lives. "My skill lies in administration. Tell me, Aang, what trials do you face?"
Much later, everyone would remark in amazement as Avatar Aang managed to make a deal that would encourage economic growth within the Republic, Fire Nation, and Earth Kingdom areas that traded with each other.
