Just rewatched all of atla bc of the new Netflix atla buzz (both excited and not eeeee) and I have thoughts on future kataang, having looked into whether to read the comics or not - I wish they'd left Aang to be SHORTER! Am I the only one that can't see the connection between the adult Aang drawings to child Aang? Yes, of course he has to mature but he loses all his cheeky open face and you don't have to be taller to be older, neither do you have to be taller than your girlfriend. Like he has short king energy, let him LIVE!

Welp. Binged the second half of the new ATLA show and finished it and I am still so incredibly impressed. Spoilers under the cut y'all know the drill

I freaking loved this adaptation. Slapped. Killed it. Nailed it. I'm gonna rewatch it over and over. Legitimately the only things I could really complain about are all related to Azula.

I really feel like Azula having screentime in season 1 served zero purpose here. I feel it would've been much more impactful to have her go entirely unmentioned until the finale when Zhao reveals to Zuko that Azula was behind everything (i.e. iy would've been cooler if Zhao were also revealing it to us, the audience, for the first time).

I also think it's a little odd how they're kind of totally changing the dynamic between Ozai and Azula (or at least the parts of the dynamic that we're supposed to believe is a representation of their relationship for the majority of the show). In the original show, Azula has no idea Ozai is simply manipulating her for the fun of it. She genuinely thinks he loves her, is proud of her, and is extremely impressed with her. It's not until almost the last episode that Ozai ever directly expresses his disdain for something she's done/said, unless I'm wrong. Ozai's expectations of her in the original show appear to be things she's easily capable of meeting, and she feels extremely confident in her abilities and is under the impression Ozai is equally confident in her. I find it strange that repeatedly in this adaptation Ozai is instead treating her pretty similarly to the way he treats Zuko. He doesn't appear to show her any kind of particular favor, doesn't expect anything but the most outrageously impossible from her, and regularly ridicules/undermines her and sows seeds of doubt in her mind that she's competent.

Azula doesn't show the slightest hint of cracking until the end of season 3 after Mai's and Ty Lee's betrayal. Sure, there are hints earlier on that she's a perfectionist and refuses to settle for anything less than the most flawless outcome, but she comes off as being incredibly confident and secure in her position. She doesn't doubt anything about her situation or her relationship with her father or brother. In other words, in the original show, the audience and Azula herself are never meant to realize until the very end that Ozai was pitting his children against each other. We (and her) are intended to believe that Ozai genuinely prefers Azula and is more pleased with her than he is with Zuko. In this version, there really doesn't seem to be much of that at all. It's just odd.

Smaller complaint, but I don't think that actress is necessarily just the most stellar choice for Azula, either. The casting for the show has been excellent so far, but this particular actress seems to be bringing out aspects of Azula's character that really weren't meant to be at the forefront until much later. Maybe it's the actress, maybe it's the writing, maybe it's both, but it doesn't feel like Azula. She doesn't feel like a substantial threat. Heck, Zhao is wayyy more compelling in this version than Azula is, and that's really not very good. She feels like just another competitor for Zuko.

Kind of branching off of that, and this one is a pretty small one, but Mai and Ty Lee are super boring. Granted, I don't really care about them at all in the original anyway (Mai has really no narrative reason to exist other than to be part of what causes Azula's spiral; I do like Ty Lee a little bit, but I could really take her or leave her), but they're just... so bland. There's no reason for them to be in those scenes other than to be cardboard boxes Azula can glare at. At least in the original, they serve as an excellent example of what's tethering Azula to reality and how she feels an incessant need to exert control over every aspect of her life. I reaaaaally wish they'd waited until later to bring them into the adaptation (it's also just reinforcing to me the fact that I simply cannot see Zuko with Mai at all in either version, but that's an issue for a different day).

Other than those things I wasn't too thrilled about, I really did love the show. The acting from the main cast was excellent, the stakes felt SO MUCH HIGHER and it was SUCH a nice tonal change, the bending looked incredible, the amount of effort put into accurately replicating the sets and the costumes was just astounding, and the pacing was excellent. I love how they were able to cut down on so much of the extraneous filler from the original season 1 by finding ways to compile them together in a way that still flowed excellently and allowed for a greater focus to be put on the main story. The main story in this adaptation never stops going, and for me, that makes it SO much easier and more fun to watch. It doesn't go off on forty-minute tangents that have zilch to do with the main point of the show.

Also Dallas Liu is literally the best possible pick for Zuko. He is capturing Zuko's miserable wet cat energy in a way no one but Dante Basco could do and that is saying something. He's also putting an excellent emphasis on how desperately obsessive Zuko is about catching Aang in season 1. He's completely blinded by his desire to find him, causing him to make completely illogical and irrational decisions driven purely by a desperate desire to measure up, and Dallas Liu is really doing an incredibly good job reinforcing that without having to actually say it.

Gordon Cormier is also absolutely killing it as Aang for me. I'm really not the biggest fan of Aang (I just don't usually like child characters; he's better in some parts of season 3 but he's just not really my favorite), but he's actually making Aang incredibly fun to watch. He's adorable and fun and silly without being painfully immature and difficult to be invested in. Yeah, I know, Aang's twelve and twelve year olds are immature, but that doesn't mean they're automatically fun to watch. He's really doing a great job there.

I also love this version of Zhao. I feel like he got way more screentime in this version than in the original, which was pretty cool. He turned out to be a much cooler and more dangerous villain than it felt like he was in the original.

I also liked this version of Yue WAYYYY more even though she was only in one episode because man!! She has a personality holy cow!! She's actually fun!! And entertaining!! Not just Phantom Menace Natalie Portman-levels of "Well she's a very nice person :)"

Also also, I loved the vibe of uhh episode 5, I think it was-?. Both of the Koh jumpscares legitimately startled me which I was not expecting 😭 normally I can eat simple jumpscares for lunch but they made him so frickin creepy which is honestly good because hE IS FRICKIN CREEPY

And I cried. Like three times. First time when frickin Leaves From the Vine played at Lu Ten's funeral (that one had me weeping as usual), I think a second time when Katara is remembering being a little girl and is hiding and she sees her mom being killed (that was honestly so much more impactful that we actually got to SEE such things instead of just hearing about it), and then I think again in Zuko's Agni Kai because my gosh he's been through it :((( the flashback parts before then though were so nice 😭 I lived long enough to see happy smiling Zuko in 4k which means I can die peacefully now

All of this is coming from someone who first watched the show as a young kid, was never really a huge Aang fan, and really doesn't care for the original season 1 and tends to skip it every time I watch the show. I have pretty unusual opinions about the original, so my opinions here may vary massively from the general consensus, and that's fine. I really loved this adaptation and I will be so heartbroken if they don't make a season 2 MAAAANNNN I NEED MORE 😭😭😭

Also the writers are goated for replacing Aang with Sokka in the Cave of Two Lovers and having Katara reinforce their family bond instead of pushing a self-insert crush a little boy has on a teenage girl who treats him like her son. And also that scarf scene which I think I will perhaps never not be thinking about. I will be forever indebted to them for that but again that's a topic for uhh not right now 👍

Okay, this idea has now been sitting in my brain for months now, although I took it in a slightly different direction than your initial concept...

If You Give a Sokka a Suki

If you give a Sokka a Suki, he's going to ask to learn to fight.

When you teach him to fight, he'll probably help you defend your village.

When he's finished, he'll apologize for underestimating you.

Then, he'll blush when you forgive him with a kiss.

After you kiss him, he'll want to visit you again on Kyoshi Island, and he'll be heartbroken when you're not there.

But that just means he'll be extra excited when he sees you again.

He might get carried away and act all over-protective.

He may even end up feeling conflicted and guilty about his feelings for you.

You'll have to give him a little space to figure out what he wants.

He'll act like nothing happened the next day, so you'll apologize for crossing a line.

When you tell him you were just looking out for him, he'll get so excited he'll want to kiss you.

He'll kiss you.

After he kisses you, he's going to think about you when you're gone.

And then he'll want to rescue you when he finds out you're imprisoned by the Fire Nation.

Which means he'll need your badass parkour skills.

He'll bring you with him when he escapes the air temple,

and he'll make you a sand sculpture to show how much he loves you.

But then Prince Jerkbender will remind him that they have to defeat the Fire Lord.

So, he'll come up with a plan to help the Avatar.

And chances are, if he rides into battle against the Fire Nation...

he's going to want a Suki to go with him.

What are some traits he finds attractive ( not necessarily in a romantic sense, more like a general ‘oh this person is cool’ kind of like ) in other people? How about some traits that he finds repulsive?

As someone who is branded as the “black sheep” in his family and doesn’t often fit in with others outside of it either, he is drawn to people who are outcasts in similar ways too. Those who don’t conform, who are difficult to get along with, who offend by personality, manners, or looks — intentionally or not. Ray feels a vague, innate sense of fellowship with people like that. 

Whether he realizes it or not, he also finds traits compelling which he lacks. People who are calm, introspective, and possess a grounding presence counterbalance his reckless and impulsive nature. People who are openly kind, remind him of his mother. In a similar vein, he has a like for aloofness and pessimism. It’s not necessarily attractive to him in the sense he finds it admirable, but these dispositions imbue him with the need to challenge and tease. He wants to leave a mark on such individuals. To put it plainly, he feels attracted to opposites.

Traits he doesn’t like at all are dishonesty, dispassion, and cruelty. The latter of which is especially abhorrent to him. While he's no saint himself, struggling with anger issues as he does, he dislikes to see cruelty in other people. It reflects a part of him he knows is there, but one he struggles against. Something that separates him from his mother and brings him so much closer to his father. That’s why subconsciously he seeks people who inspire him to do better.

Zagreus eats nothing but junk food. You’d think with the amount of fat and calories he keeps so enthusiastically shoving into his mouth, he wouldn’t have the chipper physique of a late 20s bachelor who’d only ever cared about getting a sports scholarship and a concussion.

Alas, Zagreus didn’t care much about the kind of sports that would have gotten him a scholarship back in the day. And he’s not exactly a bachelor.

The rest is... pretty much on point.

Right down to the concussion.

Which is the thing he’s pretty sure he’s sporting right now. All while shoving yet another fry into his mouth, grotesquely salted and without a drop of ketchup. His mixed accent spills only after the potato had already been chewed, a polite man who eats with his elbows on the table.

He grabs another fry and begins gesticulating. A napkin would help here, but he’d already pushed his own towards the forensic, case she’d like to transform it into a shape more magnificent than his greasy fingers could ever hope to dream of.

It’s probably not a good thing that he’s this familiar with someone from law enforcement solely because he keeps getting dragged into the nearest station after getting his ass ceremoniously handed to him by his boyfriend’s brother.

No amount of ‘but officer, it was consensual, we were sparring!’ would convince the questioner, especially once you took a look at Zagreus’ state and the complete lack of impairment on Charon’s anything.

To be fair, though, the reason he’s actually in any way familiar with this member of the LAPD is because he’d asked about the origami littering so many desks, and not because he'd fucked up enough to have to involve forensics.

“You’d think having only one child you have actual direct communicative access to would make him more likely to expend a minute amount of care towards said child, alas,” he sighs.

Then he offers a smile. “Sorry for rambling, by the way. How was your day?”

Suki/Silver - blossom

they're my children and i love them so much okay also i could write a thesis on why silver is the best rival in the series

Sakura blossom fritter away delicately as Suki shuffles through crowds of party-goers, her geta click-clacking on the pavement as she rushes to meet Ethan and Silver. Dipping into her small purse she had with her, she dials Ethan’s number, but is met with with a dial tone, and she picks up her pace, wishing she hadn’t left togekiss back at home.

Out of breath, she finally arrives, and she scans the party. Taking part close to the sea in Cherrygrove City, it had been a picturesque location for such an event, and when she spots a young couple sharing sake she wishes she had someone close enough to share the occasion with.

After a while she finds an out of place Silver, and teeter’s over to eagerly greet him. “Silver!”

He's taken off guard, visibly flinching, and he turns to the noise. His face softens once he sees Suki, but almost has to do a double-take once he realises she's not in her usual clothes. Instead, she's wearing a pink yukata dotted with sakura petals, paired with a darker pink obi, and her hair had been styled in a pretty up-do finished off with a butterfree clip.

“Suki. Hey,” he breathes, and he swallows thickly. He shoves his hand into the pocket that housed his feraligatr, out of anxiousness more than anything, and he faintly smiles. “You look… nice.”

Suki giggles, twirling girlishly. “Thanks! My mom made this for me!”

She rakes her eyes over the crowds once more, frowning when there's still no sign of their friend.

“Have you seen Ethan? He said he was going to meet us here.”

Silver’s brows crease as he asks, “Ethan’s coming?”

“Well, yeah! He told you to meet us here, right?” Suki pouts, just as confused as Silver was.

“No, he said you needed help with training, and that you didn’t call me because your pokegear was busted.”

Bewildered, Suki reaches into her purse, pulling out her working, fully intact pokegear.

“Oh,” was all Silver managed, and he had put two and two together to realise his friend had set him up. That was the last time he told Ethan anything.

“Oh, well, he said to me Falkner knew about the hanami that was taking place today and that we were all invited…” she trails off, biting her lip as her eyes rove back to the young couple sat under a tree.

“Well, uh, I can go if you want? You probably don't need me here when I’m dressed like this and you're dressed like… that,” he gestures to her outfit, feeling underdressed next to her.

“What? No!” Suki could feel her cheeks getting hot, and she covers her mouth after her outburst.

There's a cloud of awkwardness between them, and Silver was already thinking what he’d do to Ethan when he next saw him. His red hair whipped gently at his face as a gust of wind swept through the pair, and as he watched the blossom fall he decided that this might not be all bad after all.

“I, uh, saw Morty a while ago. Maybe we should say hey.”

Suki’s face brightens, and she beams at him. “Sure!”

She obtains a poke all from her purse, and in a flash of light her meganium is there. It nuzzles its head into her hand, before letting out a roar of glee when it spots Silver.

His face twists into a smirk, and he rummages for a pokeball, and soon feraligatr is next to him. It lowers its head for Suki to pet, which she does, before turning its attention to her meganium.

Suki laughs at the two pokémon, and she turns to Silver. Their eyes meet, and for a moment she's sure everything is in slow motion, until a lone sakura petal nestles itself into Silver’s hair.

“Um, you have a, y’know, thing…” she gestures to his head, but after he fails to get rid of the blossom, she plucks it out of his hair.

Embarrassed, Silver looks toward the crowd, and he spots Whitney who manically waves the both of them over.

Holding out his arm, he asks, “shall we go meet everyone?”

Smiling, Suki nods and locks her arm with his.

Now that there is no fire bender present, Jet is less provoked, so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles Sokka without Zuko around putting him on edge.

Sokka does have a mouth, and he hates Jet so I agree, if punches are thrown it’s because Sokka said something haha. (I also kind of think Sokka would punch first haha. He has already attacked Jet twice)

I'm really sorry anon, but the image was too blurry for me to read 😭 so there are a lot of Kanji that I can't recognize to make a proper translation. I managed to get the gist though, so here's a short summary:

Sonoko asked Ran if Shinichi and her ever said 'I like you' (suki) to each other directly. To which Ran says no and wonders if that's really important. Sonoko comments that Shinichi doesn't seem to be the type of guy that can straightforwardly say 'I like you'.

Sonoko manages to convince Ran to call Shinichi on his birthday and say 'I like you' to him. Ran, although flustered, heeds Sonoko advice and calls Shinichi on his birthday.

Their phone conversation (page 12 - page 15) goes like this:

Shinichi: Yes, Kudo speaking? Ran? What is it?

Ran: What do you mean 'what is it?', today is your birthday right?

Shinichi: Oh right. I'm too absorbed in my case right now.

Ran: Mou, you really are a detective nerd. By the way Shinichi, happy birthday~~

Shinichi: Thank you, Ran

Ran: A-and also...there's something that I haven't tell you properly before

Ran: Ehm... I like you (suki dayo).

Ran: I mean... I like you, romantically, as a lover. That's what I mean by 'like'.

Shinichi: Me too, Ran.

Shinichi: I love you (aishiteru)

Shinchi: Well anyway...thank you for calling, I have to get back to the case now. Byeee.

Both end the calls flustered (lol). Later, Ran sends an email that reads:

Ran T/N: (suki) and (aishiteru) means ‘I love you’ but different in intensity. Aishiteru is a more intense way to say ‘I love you’ than ‘suki’ and typically used in a much more serious relationship.

I think episode 3 was my favorite because there's a lot of Jet and Live Action Jet is so HANDSOME.. (he looks like One Piece Ace (in my imagination at least). At the beginning I thought he was the shorthaired Haru.. but apparently no Haru at all 🫠

Katsuki knew from a young age that he wanted to be the best. He would sacrifice what he had to go get there. Even if that meant losing the people closest to him.

You knew from a young age that you wanted to be Katsuki’s. That you’d stand by his side and love him forever. You’d sacrifice whatever you could to be his.

It worked for a while. You pined after him. He shoved you away.

“Oi! Get off!” He barked and tried to shove you off of him. Katsuki had just won the UA festival and you met up with him after.

“No! You won! You did so good!” You squeal and squeeze the blonde tightly.

Katsuki knew that you and him could never happen. You were the annoying girl who lived across the street. The girl he was forced to play with when your moms would have coffee together on Saturday mornings.

You knew that you’d have to chip away at the icy exterior to make room for yourself in his heart. He wasn’t just Dynamite. He was Katsuki. The boy who lived across that street. The boy you’d spend Friday nights roasting marshmallows with in the winter time with the use of his quirk.

His time at UA came and went. With lots of bumps in the road, he always seemingly found himself at your doorstep. Disheveled. Bleeding. Nearing exhaustion.

“Sit still.” You whisper softly as you stitch him up. You went on to become a doctor, thanks to Katsuki. You saw the difference he was making in the world and you wanted to do it too.

“I am.” He said gruffly and took another swig of vodka. He looked down at your concentrated face. The way your brows furrowed as you carefully threaded the needle. He wouldn’t ever admit it, but every time you were finished healing him up, he craved the hug you’d give. Like you were holding him together.

As Katsuki moved up in the world, did you. He was the number two hero. You were a top doctor at your hospital. There was a day that seemed to be like any other. Some petty robberies, a few check ups. The day was normal for you both.

Until a huge explosion shook the hospital and sent everyone in a panic. Three villains came in and started causing destruction, and chaos. You quickly started to help patients that were laying in the rubble, you didn’t care that the villains were close by you. You put other people before yourself.

That was the last thing you remember before waking up in someone’s arms. Soft water droplets we’re hitting your face. You scrunched your brows together, your eyes felt heavy as you slowly opened them. Your vision slowly focused as you saw the spiky blonde holding you. Tears mixed with remnants of black from his eyeliner slowly ran down his cheeks and onto your face.

“Come on. Wake up. Please.” His voice was hoarse. You wanted to laugh, to tell him you were right that someday all the yelling would get to him.

“Y/n please. If you wake up right now, I’ll marry you. Just please get up. I can’t do this without you!” You’ve never heard katsuki this upset before. When you’ve finally become coherent enough to slowly move, you gently wrap your arms around him in a hug.

“I’d never leave you Suki.” You whisper to him. For the first ever, he hugs you back. His hand grip the tattered up doctors jacket like you’d fade from existence. He buried his face in your neck as you both hold each other.

Katsuki takes you to his apartment that night, he says it’s for your safety just incase. You can tell he’s lying. Which is why when he shows you the guest room to let you lay down and rest, you turn and lay in his bed instead. The corner of his mouth turns up into a smile before he lays with you.

You know that katsuki will never love you like you love him.

Katsuki knows that you will never understand his love for you. That his love isn’t something he can put in words. He doesn’t know how to translate his love into something you can understand. But he’ll work at it. Because he loves you.
