IM NEVER GOING ON INSTAGRAM AGAIN
I made the mistake of reading the comments under the post of a disabled woman’s video with her baby
“Her husband does 90% of the work”
“How did you even make that in the first place?”
“Guys will literally hit anything.”
How fucking brain dead do you have to be to comment shit like that?
Someone is sharing their journey as a disabled parent and their first impulse is to ask intrusive questions about her sex life?!
I’m fucking disgusted. I physically cannot even comprehend this right now. Hundreds of years later and disabled people are still seen as a fucking spectacle!

Not Natalie telling Will he used to ‘do anything to save a patient’s life’ after she just advocated murdering a disabled person the week before.

The leftism/anticapitalism leaving people's bodies the zeptosecond you imply that disabled people who aren't "productive" still matter in society and need to be treated like intrinsic equals who have a place in this world:

Absolutely infuriating that Etsy drove away service dog gear makers because they can’t prove that the gear is going to an actual service dog, but are absolutely fine hosting service dog-style vests and patches as long as they’re for ESAs.

Do people really not know basic ableist stereotypes/“jokes.” Why are so many people surprised that MirandaSings is an ableist caricature, I thought that was the entire joke?
The constant focus on Miranda being gross, the focus on her making weird faces and “strange” movements, her inability to recognize social boundaries, her not fully understanding sex and relationships beyond how they’re portrayed in media, constant CSA jokes about her not realizing her uncle is a grooming her… like her character is just a horrible ableist “joke” wtf were other people interpreting it as???
EDIT: I want to be clear that I don’t really judge ppl for not recognizing this, esp if you were a kid when you watched her, but I genuinely can’t process what else is the funny part of the character. Like what is the joke besides her just… being disabled and mean lol

Arthurian legends and many fairy tales:
using exoticized, mystified portrayals of real disabled people (and many times, explicitly Black disabled people to add extra racist exoticism) so often in mystical ~exotic~ unearthly roles that european fantasy and every offshoot thereof now treats "dwarves" like a completely separate fantasy species

Adding audiobooks, podcasts and radio shows as progress towards my annual StoryGraph reading goal because I'm interested in recording the stories people tell me, not just the number of squiggles on pages that I process with my eyeballs

Gods it is taking every ounce of my strength to not turn each complaint my mother has abt her sprained ankle into a lecture abt her internalized ableism.
Like hm. You are in a lot of pain most of the day. It is unnecessarily strenuous for you to do things like get a new milk from the garage when you use up the one in the house, so you don’t. You are in pain, so you snap at people more often. You require a brace and other supports in order to get around. Ok, fine, whatever. Why is it that it’s ok for you to do those things, but not me? For all intents and purposes, I have a permanently sprained knee and permanently sprained ribs. I feel just a bad as you do, yet when I ask someone else to get the milk for me, it’s selfish and entitled. When I snap at people for pushing my boundaries and disrespecting me because I’m in too much pain to regulate my responses adequately (maybe once a month AT MOST), it’s abusive and toxic and inappropriate. When I use my brace or ask for a cane/wheelchair, it’s lazy and ‘trying to make myself more ill’. There is functionally no difference between you and I right now except that your pain is curable and mine most likely is not. So what makes my reactions inappropriate? Is it perhaps internalized ableism? Shame over having a “””broken””” child? Denial that illness and disability is not a choice? Maybe? No? It’s just you “wanting what’s best for me”??? Ok. Sure bud. Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess🤷🏽‍♂️

I'm always surprised when I see people in places where weed is still illegal celebrating steps toward legalization bc I forget that not everyone knows how legal cannabis in Canada only further harmed the same people prohibition had been harming.
It basically put all the good dealers out of business and legitimized the shitty ones, screwed disabled people over in favour of ableds, suffused everything with a cringey weed mom culture with all the same fucked up elements as wine moms, and previous users are now paying more for a lower quality product that's worse for the environment.
Legalization did not bring decriminalization to the majority of people already serving time or living with a criminal record for it, did not reduce the racism involved, and all but halted research into remaining unknowns about how cannabis works.
What it did do was largely cause the kinds of people whose voices are most likely to be heard to forget about decriminalization, medical use, public education on cannabis, and so on. Apparently the only time moneyed, abled and/or white people cared about any of those issues was when it inconvenienced them and now that they can just buy from a government-run covid farm that looks like an Apple store it's out of sight, out of mind.
There's a broader lesson here about how social change does not always equal social progress and you can't trust any system built on exploitation and violence to do anything except find new and more egregious ways to be exploitative and violent.
The only cultural changes that improve things are ones which fundamentally alter how agency, worth, visibility and control are determined and distributed among the living beings belonging to or in contact with the impacted culture. Changes to specific taboos and norms are useless if they leave the load-bearing elements of injustices intact.
I'm already seeing the logical continuation of this in how hallucinogens that might be (re)legalized within my lifetime are being approached. Social assistance in Canada still won't cover anything except CBT and (some) medication, and even their coverage of CBT is tenuous (and the CBT that's covered is of dubious quality). You really think people who could benefit from new treatments are going to have them?
Whenever people excitedly share news about psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy being approved for certain patients or results of yet another study into the effects of such substances on lingering trauma symptoms etc etc I think, "Great, one more goddamn thing that traumatized people who are already struggling to access various broadly accepted or established treatments won't get to use."
It's all repainting the walls without replacing the rotten foundation. And the building is going to fall just as soon and just as hard as it was going to before, with just as many people inside.

They're doing "disability in fantasy" discourse on twitter rn and I wanna say that like, on top of the obvious & already discussed (by people more articulate than me) ableism, the sheer level of ignorance about how medicine & bodies work you have to have in order to say "why would you ever need a wheelchair in a universe with healing magic 🙄" is astounding.

Watching the Ted Bundy Netflix show (i know, i know). It amazes me that these people are so apposed to those with low or no empathy as a concept that they'd rather say there's a block "preventing" him from feeling empathy than just. accepting that he has none.
He murdered those people because he's a piece of shit. His lack of empathy and his "narcissism" (🙄) did not cause anything that he did, because that's not how they work.
Honestly, the ableism within the true crime community as a whole is astounding. They really cannot get through one day without calling someone a narcissist or a socio/psychopath.

I'm a disabled adult when I say this: Catra is an absolute ableist piece of shit and also the creator of other people's disabilities, yet fans say that we're ableists for not liking her
*sighs*
Tbh, even if Catra was actually canonically disabled (especially having BPD, autism, or whatever disability people headcanon her having), that doesn't excuse the fact that she has not only disabled others (Octavia with her missing eye and Adora's mental health decline to name two things because to actually list them all would be like writing a novel), but also used Hordak for his disability and having it be presented as a "girlboss villain moment"
Disabled characters can still be held responsible for bad deeds that they created, even if they had a valid reason to do so
If Catra was actually disabled, she'd definitely fit under the topic of "disabled characters written by an ableist person"
However, considering she isn't actually disabled, fans are too detached to actually differentiate between canon and headcanon when it comes to making these arguments
Thank you! For people saying she has bpd, you know that she can still be ablest right? She literally exploited Hordak's disability, and, I hate to sound like a broken record since I mentioned this in another post, but how is that not basically taking a wheelchair from someone with broken legs! I'd be fine if it was rightfully shown as the fucked up thing it was, but nooo she's a cool girlboss and is never held accountable for doing that! She literally permanently disfigured Octavia by scratching her eye, and why!? I seriously do not get how she's never called out for it. Same with Perfuma for putting Entrapta ON A LEASH! Or literally every character with a physical diablity being a villain. The ableism in this KID'S SHOW is astounding.

so so far there are two (2) Astounding Stories of Super-Science that are bigoted shit.
(There might be more in the February edition, I read that one a while ago before I realized there was a whole series, and I forget most of what happened in that one)
1: Brigands of the Stars, by Ray Cummings
Racist and misogynistic
2: Monsters of Moyen by Arthur J. Burks
Racist, misogynistic, ableist, uses the fucking N word, and calls literally harmless shit "rape" at least twice. The evil Eastern emperor who's "terrorizing the West" is described as disfigured and ugly and somehow representative of literally all people of color at the same time. There's only one female character and she's apparently the most beautiful white woman ever to exist and all she does is be the protag's woman he loves, who the evil scary disabled brown man plans to enslave for some fucking reason -.-

no but I’m so angry at how ppl are treating c!tommy’s mental health issues and spiralling leading to him becoming addicted to invisibility potions- something that also affects him mentally, with him crashing in the nights and being all but manic in the day, and falling into extreme paranoia and hypervigilance about a threat he’s been deliberately lead into believing many times over and having no support network to steer him on a healthier path, leading to him lashing out and taking a final desperate solution for freedom- one he’s visibly incredibly guilty about- as like. an ultimate moral failing. i’m sorry his blatant mental breakdown isn’t palatable to you. that does not excuse the blatant ableism i’ve been seeing. c!tommy literally CAN’T FUCKING HELP it. he’s had his entire support network stripped away. he’s been deliberately led into paranoia. paranoia bad enough it borders on delusions- and keep in mind, c!tommy has had delusions and hallucinations before. what is he meant to do? what are you expecting him to do in this situation? fucking bootstrap himself out of his own mental health issues? the ableism in this fandom astounds me.
