Aw, it’s not surprising that Bones could immediately tell that something was wrong with Spock. I mean, yes, they’re trapped 5000 years in the past on a frozen planet, but when did it ever stop Spock from looking for their Captain? LOL

this episode was surprisingly good, even though the whole paradise-not dying-thing because of the germ free air didn't make a whole lot of sense biology-wise. but I didn't expect an abortion/contraception discussion in a late 60s star trek episode, with kirk representing pro choice! I wonder what the audience thought of that back then. bc that was years before roe vs wade. sometimes I love tos for this exact reason, even if some episodes are really unnecessary and odd (and sexist etc.).
I also loved spock being 100% more competent than kirk in this episode. he figured it out within an hour or so. just imagine spock being the captain instead of kirk, all their adventures would take 80% less time. episodes would end after 15mins. and self-confident spock is so rare, but kind of attractive… standing his ground and so on. I generally love the episodes where he takes command.

Guys I’m sorry but I cannot stress enough how fucked up the ending to the mark of Gideon is.
Like ESPECIALLY Kirk of all people just letting her go back down to the planet when she explicitly stated she was going to fill Kirk’s intended role of patient zero for a disease that would genocide god knows how much of the population.
Just cuz the show forgot Tarsus IV happened doesn’t mean I will.
There is no fucking way Kirk would let her go back down. Over population, Prime directive, and starfleet regulations be damned he would NOT give that Ambassador the tools to commit genocide.
This isn’t even a he was out of character the whole episode. No. He rightfully called out the girl’s dad for being a jackass and there being other solutions to their over population problem.
It’s just the last 5 minutes.
The worst part is they try to play it off like Elaan of Troyius where the two part understanding that they have their own duties to their people and so can’t get romantically involved,
EXCEPT THIS BITCH’S DUTY IS LITERALLY MASS GENOCIDE
AND KIRK JUST LETS IT HAPPEN

My favorite part about The Mark of Gideon is Spock’s fantastic push back against the beast that is diplomacy. I hate the tangled web that diplomats and bureaucrats weave as much as the next guy, and it could be easy to assume that because Spock is a Vulcan, he could fall under a category of person that also believes the blind following of rules is the best course of action.
But OF COURSE he doesn’t. Because the run around and manipulation of one’s words that runs so rampant in politics is the least logical thing in the galaxy. And Spock knows this. He is the first to suggest they bypass Starfleet and beam down to the planet anyway. Because the rules cannot help them in this situation and he knows it. That miraculous intuition of when rules should and should not be followed is one of Spock’s defining half human/half Vulcan traits.
It’s that blind obedience to rules that you don’t quite understand the function of, and the deliberate misuse of those rules to sway a situation in one’s favor, that makes diplomacy and bureaucracy so infuriating. Just happy to know Spock agrees

"We are incapable of destroying or interfering with the creation of that which we love so deeply. Life, in every form, from fetus to developed being. It is against our tradition, against our very nature. We simply could not do it."
"Yet you can kill a young girl."
Slightly different issue, but I feel the quote still applies. 👀👀👀
