I am not going to question these anymore though, I don’t want to do that and it’s not my aim at all, because the main point I’d like to talk about and correct is how the tape has reached out to Douglas Lane, the person who tried to sell it,: by the man who was hired to do some work at Roger’s home when he was away. He thought the tape he saw on the shelf is a video from The Miracle album and took it home to watch so he basically ‘stole’ it because he ended up making a copy and giving it to Lean.

Lean claimed the tape had been “borrowed” and copied by a 47-old-friend.

The man had been hired to do building work at Taylor’s £700,000 second home in Kensington, West London, while the star was away.

He took the tape from a shelf thinking it was a video from Queen’s Miracle album.

Lean said: “He is a Queen fan so he thought he would take it home and have a look at it.”

And Douglas, who earns money in an unsatisfying amount, thought that he would get more by selling it.

“He had the sense to copy it and put the original back, but he didn’t do anything with the copy.

“He knew I was involved in music and told me about it.”

Lean, who drives a concrete mixer by day and earns £20 a night playing guitar in pubs, said: “I immediately thought I could make myself a packet out of it.

“It was my idea to sell it.”

Sunday Mirror writes that Lean said Roger edited the tape so that after those “sessions”, you see Breakthru video and he labelled the tape “Breakthru promo”.

“Taylor has no idea the video has been copied,” said Lean.

He said the tape was labelled “Breakthrough Promo” — the name of the band’s single from the Miracle album.”

I mean, really? I honestly don’t have any idea why he would do that. Why would he add a private video on a same tape with one of Queen videos? Why would he bother? If he did, why does he label it with that? Why does that worker get so curious about a video from 2 years ago? Maybe he didn’t have chance to see it in those two years, that could be the only answer. But why does he bring it to his home rather than watching it in Roger’s home? Surely, he wouldn’t see any problem at that as he’s fine with taking something that doesn’t belong to him. It’s purely a chance that he came across with something unexpected which will make him want to copy it at his home.

And after everything, this is apparently what Lean says:

But he insisted: The video was not stolen. It was just borrowed and copied.”

I can say a lot of words right now but I won’t… If all these things are really true, that is not an excuse of taking someone’s private stuff to copy without their consent, not ethical at all as he aimed to sell it and make it public. Ergo it was indeed stolen.

So, see? There is no “mixing the tapes and giving the wrong tape to a fan”. I assume this article must be the first place where that wrong version came from. And if it is telling the truth, there seems to be no mistake he has done here because his private stuff has been taken from his property unbeknownst to him. Briefly, we don’t know for sure if they had a tape and if it has really reached out to someone but if it did, then I believe this is high likely how it would happen.

It’s worth to mention that there is another theory regarding these news, that it’s been arranged to take media’s attention off Freddie. I can’t tell which one is true or if both them are wrong and nothing even happened, of course. It’s up to you, choosing whatever you’re going to believe in. But know that I can’t see any creditable source about him giving the wrong tape - so I wouldn’t suggest believing in that or keeping talking about it - and there might be more about this that we don’t / won’t know about so it’s only haste to make a judgement based on these.

Last note about something regarding him in general: Please, don’t take the different versions of this story and comments about them into account when you form your opinion about him because only those things don’t define him. Or the other way around, “if it’s Roger, it’s probably true - he would do it” attitude is not really fair when we consider that it’s actually you who chose to perceive him in that way by getting influenced whether by the movie or some ‘facts’ around - they do not reflect some aspects of him in the right way. Always try to find an original source. It is not always only him who would have his fun in those various ways, it is possible for any other rock star. All of them did some stuff - sometimes some really bad stuff - but it is not only Roger (I don’t mean the stated story here though, I honestly can’t see anything bad there). So him being the one who is involved in this story doesn’t prove or provide any authenticity. If everyone complies with that while critizing him or not approving something about him, it is always acceptable and welcomed, in my opinion. And that is valid about everyone, of course.

Practical advice if you want to start a podcast

I wrote a post for the RED team at La Trobe with some general advice for podcasting, but I’ve found there are some recurring questions that I get about setting up a podcast. This post is here to answer those questions.

If you’re not interested in starting a podcast, but want to listen to more linguistics podcasts, I’ve got a list for you!

I last updated this post in June 2021 - if you find this post a few years after this you might want to search for some more up to date specs. I’ll continue to update this from time to time as new questions (or answers) come up.

Picture your audience

Before you make any decisions about your show, know who it is for. Your topic might be incredibly niche and have an audience in the hundreds, which is very different to a potentially larger but less engaged audience. See the classic blog post from Kevin Kelly on the power of 1000 true fans. Knowing your potential audience, where they hang out online, and how they’re likely to support you, will help your decision making. I have a self-guided slide set for refining your project before you start working on it. It’s also ok to know who you don’t want as your audience, and make choices that don’t actively include them. Do this early and clearly so people aren’t disappointed. For example, having a show with clearly noted explicit language selects away from young kids and their parents.

The length and format of your show are a product of your aims

I personally like shows in the 25-35 minute range. But, having said that, I love Shortwave, which regularly clocks in at 10 minutes, and I’m disappointed when an episode of You’re Wrong About is less than an hour.

Know your audience and the level of depth you want to explore a topic in. The frequency of episodes and the amount of time you have to prepare and edit will also affect how long episode end up. Record a few episodes first and share them with people you trust will give you good feedback.

The best interviews are conversations

Good interviews are just conversations that are intentionally lopsided, and good interviewers make the conversation feel like it’s not lopsided. Do your homework, write out some questions, and then take a step back and actually listen to the person you’re interviewing.

Anyone who has done even a few interviews has already faced most of the questions you first think of. There are some fixes for this: push through your initial brainstorming, think about the specific angles on their topic that are most relevant to your audience and (again) listen to what the person is telling you. Like many podcasting skills, good interviewing takes practice, and you can practice by staying curious about humans you interact with in any area of your life, not just your podcast guests.

Use the best mics you can, but don’t over-invest

You don’t have go and buy the fanciest tech. If you have access to a studio, great! If you don’t, then decide what your budget is. When we started Lingthusiasm, Gretchen recorded into her phone, because we were running the show on no budget and had no idea if we’d stick it out more than 6 months. When we started making money we got Gretchen a Zoom H4n to match mine. It’s still not the fanciest, but it’s rugged and adequate, especially if you make sure you’re in a closet with some blankets. Do I regret the earlier episodes of Lingthusiasm don’t sound amazing? Not as much as I would have regretted investing hundreds of dollars in a podcast that had 4 episodes.

Edit your show

Even a light edit will make the show easier for your audience to listen to, and show respect for the people you interview. I know people believe there’s an aesthetic of authenticity that comes with not editing, but all podcasting is a performance. Editing is a politeness to your audience.

Editing means a very wide range of things. You can do full production editing, including the addition of music, multiple different voice-overs and voices reading parts (e.g. getting someone else to read author quotes to bring them to life) and additional sound effects. Or you might just edit out the start and end of the recording, and any false starts and errors throughout the show. A lot of the pauses and fillers we use in conversation are designed for an audience who is in on the conversation and can reply, and can feel like they’re holding up a conversation when you’re a passive listener like a podcast audience. Many of the best conversational podcasts are given an edit to make them easier on the ears.

I use audacity to edit

Audacity is free to use. It takes a little longer to learn than something like GarageBand, but once you know how to use it, you’ll be much faster at editing. I appreciate that it has stayed pretty much the same since I started using it almost 15 years ago.

Get your levels right

Once you’ve edited your show, making sure there aren’t too many loud laughs, or your two hosts aren’t unbalanced in loudness. You’ll also need to make sure your podcast isn’t too loud or soft compared to others in people’s list. You need to regularise it. A lot of podcasts regularise to -16 LUFS. A few other numbers bounce around (-14, -18), but this is what we use and no one complains. Audacity can’t do it. You can process a certain number of hours of audio for free each month using the web-based Auphonic. It’s great.

There’s lots of great free music to use

You want to look for music that has a license that’s free to use. Even if you don’t plan to make money from your podcast, make sure the license includes commercial use so you don’t limit your future options. SoundCloud and YouTube have lots of options, as does Kevin MacLeod - who has created royalty-free music in a massive range of genres.

Web hosting is different to getting your show on iTunes

We use SoundCloud to upload and share our audio. It’s fine. I have no complaints. Once you’ve uploaded a few hours of audio you’ll have to pay annually for a pro account. Anchor seems to be a good new competitor, it’s free - I assume they make money off people choosing to run ads on their podcasts. You then generate an RSS feed, which is the thing that points all the podcast players to the place you’ve uploaded your recording. You’ll then have to add your show to major podcast platforms (Apple Podcast, Google Podcast), smaller ones will pick it up from there.

It takes a few days for your show to get picked up on all the podfeeders

Launching a podcast is a bit of a mess - it will go live on your hosting site but then you’ll have to set yourself up with iTunes, Google Podcast etc. and that can take a few days to update and populate. The sites that are popular, and the process of linking into those spaces, changes often enough that you should just google advice when you’re ready to launch, and give yourself a few days. This is part of why some podcasts launch a short ‘episode 0′ or a trailer, it gets the show set up.

Transcripts should be one of the first things you fund

Not every podcast has the time or funds to make transcripts. I do think they’re important though; for people who can’t or don’t want to listen, for discoverability and for your own record when you can’t remember when you talked about a specific story. If you have any time or money and want to be taken seriously at all, this should be one of your earliest priorities. This is even more true for educational podcasts, where a transcript ensures all students can appreciate the content of your show.

You don’t neeeeed a website, but it’s handy

You can run a show using a hosting platform and some social media. Having a website does allow you to add more information about the show and yourself. The Lingthusiasm page has grown over the years as the show has; we made a page for our liveshow events, we provide a list of episodes by topic, information about our Discord community, and our marvelous wall of supporters. The website was much more minimal when we started, but compared to just having a SoundCloud it gave the show room to grow.

You probably want socials, but be selective

You need to make your podcast discoverable by people who are likely to be your audience. Social media is one way to do this, but it’s better to be actually engaging on fewer social platforms than overextend yourself. Focus on platforms that are the intersection of where your possible fans are likely to be and where you enjoy being.

Funding a podcast takes time, and takes work

There are three main revenue streams for podcasts: advertising, crowdfunding and merch. A fourth option is institutional support (through your university or business), but then you’re beholden to the funder. Whichever revenue options work for you, think about them and plan towards them early. Part of that is making sure your podcast gets in as many ears as possible. Most successful podcasts spend as much, if not more, time on marketing, audience engagement and business planning as they do podcasting (it’s just not very glamorous to admit that!).

Choose whether each episode can stand alone

Some podcasts build a narrative over multiple episodes. Others allow listeners to jump in at any point and listen in any order. Whatever you choose, make this clear to your audience. This choice is going to influence a range of choices around what information to include in the opening and closing, how topical to make the show, and how you promote your podcast.

Seasons are a great structure to keep a podcast manageable

Regardless of whether your show runs in a sequence, planning a season with a fixed number of episodes allows you to take some time off, to maybe change some things that weren’t working, or to step away from the project with a podcast that hasn’t been left hanging.

Lock-down Story, Part III

Part I, Part II

"How about you start your own home workout stream?" When Laurent had asked this question the day before, Damen had really asked himself why he hadn't thought about it sooner. He had all the equipment, was a trained chiropractor and fitness instructor and had enough time to just do it.

He sat down and started drafting his first set of training with alternatively easier method for people who were not as sporty, muscled or simply motivated as he was. It occupied him for half a day and that was much better than to just stare at the windows and asking himself if he should clean them once again.

When he went outside to install the camera, he saw, to his surprise, his boyfriend kneeling in the dirt in their backyard.

"Sweetheart, what are you doing there?"

"Gardening, Damianos, don't ask stupid questions." Laurent didn't even look up while he was weeding their former flowerbed which was overgrown und messy.

"And why are you doing that?"

Laurent sighed, as if he didn't have the patience to explain every miniscule detail to Damen, but contrary to what one could think, Damen knew his boyfriend had all the patience in the world for him. "Because it looks horrible and I have nothing better to do. I can't stand for our backyard to look like a battlefield."

Damen nodded, it made perfect sense. Laurent was a perfectionist and his nature didn't allow him to let this state of disorder go on like that. "Am I disturbing you, if I start my workout recording now?"

"No, as long as I am not in your video I am perfectly fine." Laurent finally looked up and then his eyebrow climbed up his forehead. "Are you sure you want to wear that while you start with whatever you intend to do?"

"A live stream, Laurent. Don't talk as if you are 100 years old and slept through the last decades of technological progress. And what is wrong with it? I always wear that while training."

"You always wear that? Not only here?" The corner of Laurent's mouth twitched. Damen was honestly confused. "Yes?"

"No wonder they offered you a discount on your gym subscription. Well, then good luck. I will be over here, keeping myself away from your video camera." Laurent turned back around and continued with his task. Damen still couldn't understand what was wrong with his outfit. He wore long pants, for God's sake.

Although he was confused, he started with his training, while he trained he explained the easier execution of the routine and what advantages the different exercises had. He realized while drafting the training plan that he could include quite a bit of his chiropractor knowledge. It was fun and very satisfying.

After two hours of grueling training, he stopped the stream and posted the video on YouTube too. Nik promised to watch it and give feedback as soon as he finished with work. Then he went to shower and finally helped Laurent with his gardening. Which meant that he could help him move the bigger stones and pots full of dirt and weed.

Laurent was a mess, his face full of smutches, his hair messy with the occasional twig and leaf stuck in it, his clothes dirty, and yet, he looked very satisfied after all the work. Damen drew him closer and kissed him. He was sweaty again and decided to join Laurent for another shower.

This continued for some days more and suddenly Damen's account on YouTube exploded, his live stream had thousands of followers and Damen didn't know what had happened. He did what every responsible boyfriend would do in that situation; he ran to Laurent, a bit hysterical and demanded an explanation.

Laurent, calm as one can be took his laptop from him and made a quick google search. Then he said, dead-pan, "well, it looks as if I am dating the next internet sensation. Some important guy found your videos and shared them, people love you and now you have a lot of followers."

Damen gaped. "What?"

"Yes, congratulation, Damen. I bet half of the followers just stare at your arms while you do all those push-ups." Laurent laughed when he gave him his laptop back. Damen sat down, absolutely shocked and did a quick google search. It was true, the singer of a very famous band, Lazar Lafeu had mentioned in a telephone interview that he killed his new found free time with Damen's training video. He had said, "If we can't go on our tour I can at least look at all these nice Akielon muscles. And even better, the guy has a fully functional brain, very sexy."

Damen seriously didn't know what to do with his new found internet fame. He decided to ignore it and just continued with his videos like before. The only difference was, that after every video he took ten minutes to answer questions of his followers. What startled him the most was that people started to notice everything about him.

They complimented the color of his façade, which was a very very pale mint, picked by Laurent. They asked where he had purchased his yoga mat. They discussed the circumference of his bicep. He even understood why Laurent had been so amused by the choice his outfit. It was because his loose fitting tank top gaped open whenever he didn't stand and provided a deep look to his chest and stomach.

His follower called it the sweetest tease ever, they begged him to keep wearing them and Damen, who never had a problem with being ogled did exactly that. The question if he would do a training without a shirt however, was firmly answered in the negative.

Laurent had finished weeding their whole backyard and even started planning new flowers. Their local gardener had started to deliver the plants directly to one's doorstep and Laurent took full advantage.

Damen had been overjoyed to realize that Laurent truly enjoyed his new hobby. He could kneel in the dirt for hours and didn't care even one bit how messy the work could be sometimes. Right now he planted rose bushes while Damen was in the last two minutes of his live stream.

"Fuck! Damn it." Laurent's voice was muffled but still very clearly audible. Damen's head shot up, "Sweetheart?"

"I'm alright. Just ignore me." Laurent smiled pained and hurried inside. Damen didn't even look at the stream when he shut it down and ran behind his boyfriend. Laurent had his hand under the water in their kitchen. The stream tinted red. Damen felt the nausea grow, not because of the blood in general, but because it was LAURENT's blood.

"What happened?"

Laurent sighed. "My hand slipped."

"Show me." Damen took his hand carefully in his own. There was a very long gash in the palm of Laurent's left hand. It looked horrible and would need stiches. He was once again glad that as chiropractor he had studied together with the physicians for four years. He could do the stiches at home.

"Stay here. I will go get my medical kit."

The next day, Laurent lounged on his bench in the shade because he had decided to take a break from gardening for a day when Damen started his stream. He apologized for the abrupt ending of the stream but his followers were so over the moon that Damen had a boyfriend that they didn't care at all.

It was no surprise that the whole ten minutes after the training were filled with questions about his relationship and Laurent in general. He informed them that the mysterious boyfriend preferred to stay mysterious but that he was fine and only needed four stiches.

The fans were somewhat disappointed that they didn't get to know Laurent but accepted the decision with grace. However, they didn't give up completely. Over the course of the next day Damen was asked random questions concerning Laurent. They varied from, "Is he younger, older or the same age as you", over "Is he beautiful?", to "What is his job?". Damen answered them with permission from Laurent with, "younger", "yes", "He's a lawyer".

Then a day came when Damen didn't install the camera the same way as always because he did a later training and the sun would otherwise be too bright. He had told Laurent about it the day before and even on the same morning but Laurent was not very attentive to details that didn't concern him directly. Thus it came that he walked right through Damen's stream. It was not so bad because only his lower half was recorded, but it caused an uproar.

Damen could understand it, because Laurent's ass looked damn hot, even in the video and everybody was curious before. His fans asked about Laurent even more often and the blond man finally seemed to give in, at least in typical Laurent fashion. He answered some of the questions about himself from the off.

It was hilarious, because Laurent had a wicked kind of humor. When one guy asked if he could see him just once, Laurent answered, "Sorry, I think I am too much to handle for you, so no. There were people who actually crashed their car because of my face."

The fans asked Damen if it was true and he had to confirm it. He told them that he almost fell down a staircase when he saw Laurent for the first time. And in his humble opinion Laurent only grew more beautiful with the years.

Avoiding Downtime

When you combine labor cost with lost revenue, the numbers can add up really quickly. There are many factors that can contribute to production shutdowns. Some of them are unavoidable, like natural disasters and extreme weather patterns that make it impossibly dangerous to run operations. What the P-F (Potential to Failure) Interval Can Tell You

The smart money in machine reliability invests not only in frequent detection of faults and abnormal wear but also in frequent detection of root causes. Using the Pareto principle, you can concentrate efforts toward 20 percent of the root causes to gain 80 percent of the benefit. This is analogous to fixing the roof while the sun is shining. Correcting the cause of the leak is so much less expensive than correcting the damage caused by the leak (e.g., water damage to floors and furniture).

This concept is illustrated using the P-F interval in Figure 3. The proactive domain relates to vigilant monitoring and control of failure root causes (contamination, for instance). Corrections usually involve only minor adjustments (to remove the root cause) with no machine damage as shown in the root cause zone (A).

The onset of failure occurs at the beginning of the predictive domain. Ideally, it is detected early in the incipient failure zone (B). This requires high detection frequency and “pin-drop” detection technique (referring to condition monitoring techniques capable of detecting faint alarm signals). Once detected, the corrective action relates to root cause adjustments with only negligible machine damage.

The Dreaded Unscheduled Downtime Zone

Unscheduled downtime occurs in the precipitous failure zone (D). This is not early detection, and the damage is unforgiving. Certain types of failures produce runaway conditions. In such cases, the FDP is too short for detection (sudden death). For new machines, this is called infant mortality. The costs of these failures can be enormous due to business interruption, collateral damage (chain reaction failures), high repair bills and the potential for personal injury. Precipitous failure is the inverse of machine reliability.

Next is the post-mortem root cause analysis (RCA) zone (E). Use failure as a teacher to discover what went wrong and how to prevent its recurrence. Also, learn the incipient signs of failure so the condition monitoring program (frequency and technique) can be refined accordingly.

The Costs Of Downtime

A whitepaper has indicated that 59 percent of Fortune 500 companies experience a minimum of 1.6 hours of downtime per week.

Based purely on this estimate, how much money was lost in this time. If you say that each company has 10,000 employees who are paid approximately $56 per hour including benefits, then just the cost associated with the loss of revenue through salary pay would amount to almost $896,000 per company each week.

That adds up to over $46 million per year!

However, that estimate only accounts for wages paid during periods of downtime. There are many other costs associated with downtime other than just salary pay. We have identified a list of tangible costs of downtime: lost transaction revenue, lost wages, lost inventory, remedial labor costs, marketing costs, bank fees and legal penalties from not delivering on service level agreements. Of course, there are other potential areas of lost revenue that can affect companies when they have to shut down production. For instance, brand names could be compromised with bad publicity, and employee morale can suffer.

When critical assets breakdown, production comes to a complete halt. Even if it only takes an hour to repair essential equipment, the costs add up significantly over time. If you’re really curious to find out exactly how much money downtime can cost you, we have provided the following formulas for you to figure it out.

Labor cost = P x R x H

Where:

P = number of people affected

R = average employee cost per hour

H = number of hours of outage.

Lost revenue = (GR / TH) x I x H

Where:

GR = gross yearly revenue

TH = total yearly business hours

I = percentage impact

H = number of hours of downtime

Upon learning of their arrival on a new, safer platform, I had considered simply exchanging the old link out for the new one at the beginning of my article, where it was before, and altering my notes to reflect this, and I’m sure that I still will as soon as I can find the time to rework everything properly, but in the meanwhile, there’s something I’ve also badly needed to discuss with you all about these translations for some time, and what better time and way, I thought, than to do it in this post where I provide you with the new link?

I’m sure that many of you reading both my article and their translation have noticed that back in the Arcade scene, there was something I had mentioned happening in the novel that didn’t quite match up with DarkestJay’s presentation of those events — namely, Sheep being the first to leave the building, instead of Dazai and Chuuya; well, that difference is actually quite important as one of the main reasons why, while their work may overall be excellent and I do encourage everyone to read it regardless, I still personally would never recommend making it the only thing you read if you want to truly understand Fifteen and all of its events 100% correctly.

Yes, I am saying exactly what you think I’m saying: my information within my article was NOT incorrect — Jay’s translation of the scene, however, was, and if you don’t believe me, you can go read Lea’s translation of the scene and see it for yourself.

Now, before I say anything else, I want to make this 100% clear: I in no way am intending to imply that Jay’s work on the whole is anything but exceptional, nor am I even remotely saying that you shouldn’t read at all; in fact, I highly recommend you do read it in its entirety, because despite a few small mis-steps, as someone who owns two copies of the original Japanese light novel, has read many an English translation, and knows this story extensively well, I will be the first to very enthusiastically say that this translation is actually quite good and very, very helpful overall — an absolutely essential resource for anyone who does not speak the original language but still wants to read, experience and understand Fifteen as if they could. I am extremely, extremely grateful and appreciative of their hard work in making that possible for all English speakers, and I don’t ever want to come across as anything else or make it seem like any of that is any less than true.

That being said, though, it nevertheless absolutely cannot and should not be your only resource on the matter, because if it is, you will unavoidably end up being misled on some matters — unintentionally, of course, but still misled all the same.

Because this was translated well after the anime came out — unlike Lea’s partial but nonetheless equally wonderful translation, which came into existence very shortly after the novel was first handed out in theaters alongside DEAD APPLE, a whole year before the animated adaption was even a concept — DarkestJay’s translation does have some points where it is extremely clear that said television show’s rather poorly handled and highly inaccurate interpretation very heavily affected the OP’s perception of things, and thus caused the OP, Jay, to incorrectly interpret and translate certain parts of some scenes and/or dialogue that otherwise might not have been super clear to someone not fully, extensively familiar with the language.

Of course, there are definitely also some points where both translations are different but neither is actually wrong — as while Lea’s is less literal about every phrasing so it’s not super awkward sounding in English and flows better to read, Jay’s is almost always more literal instead, and thus differences in personal preference for wording can easily diverge while still getting the point across fine in both — but these instances are much different from the ones where it is clear Jay actually slipped up, so I’m sure you won’t have trouble defining them. As much as I would like to be of help in this regard, I must sadly inform you that I will not personally be pointing out all of these slip-ups here at this time, nor do I have any plan to do so at any time in the foreseeable future. for I have neither the time nor the desire to go about critiquing a fellow fan’s work when I’m already dedicating enough time and energy just to writing about the mountain of mistakes that the anime made without also adding more difficult and unnecessary extra work onto that.

Novelty is an important concept in animal enrichment. Changing features in an animal’s enclosure or care forces them to relearn actions and break habits. This keeps them mentally and physically active, and can easily be applied to most any species, vertebrate or invertebrate. The easiest way to apply the concept of novelty is simply changing the locations of objects in the enclosure from time to time. By moving shelter, water, or food, your insects will have to learn the new locations of these objects. Don’t move too much at one time though! Many insects will get stressed if you completely upturn their enclosure each time you want to give them enrichment. Simply move small pieces at a time to encourage exploration without causing too much stress. The easiest (and from what I have seen, most effective) thing to move is food. Don’t just put the food in one place; moving it around the enclosure (or even hiding it under something) can encourage investigation and foraging, mimicking skills necessary in the wild. You can add structures to climb and put food on to of that even. I recently put a cardboard tube in with my roaches, with food in the top. Though at first they were confused, they eventually found their way up! Though you may worry that your insects may be unable to find their food in its new location, don’t worry. Most insects have very keen senses and will likely find it eventually, though you should consider whether your location is appropriate for your specific species.

Variation of Food and Scents

A more specific technique derived from novelty is varying food. Many herbivorous and omnivorous species, such as roaches, will benefit greatly from semi-random variation of food. By changing what type of food you give them, you will keep your insects engaged in feeding, as they will not become disinterested with any one food. Like before, weekends are usually best for me to catch up on everything. I’ll try to get on during the week – especially on my early days. CHARACTER BACKGROUND:

PERSONALITY:

Amos is a very friendly and jovial fellow. A gentleman to the core, he upholds all that the Diggorys instilled in him as a child. Well-mannered, he is a Brit – fond of food, drink, music, a full pipe, his friends and good cheer, and often greets any and all strangers from both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. Able to charm many, Amos likes to flirt (not matter how cheesy it may come off). With the traveling for his work and care for creatures, Amos loves adventures and wandering.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FAMILY:

An only child can go in a few directions. Luckily, Amos took the amicable path – making his friends and schoolmates his family. His loyalty and devotion to them all is a strong bond that should not be taken lightly. While his parents passed away at a young age, Amos does not let their teachings go to waste. Above all else, Amos believes in family firmly – of all kinds. For him, family is what you build and make your own; water is not thinner than blood – pure or not.

Employee of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures

Fresh out of school, Amos wanted to travel all across Europe to find the different magical beasts and beings he would be protecting. Therefore, he has been sifting through many of the sub-divisions of the Beast Division. Recently, he went on a trip to the Americas – particularly to see and gather more information about the behavior of various creatures since he’s seen some strange patterns in Europe. There, he used the study of the great beasts known as Thunderbirds in the wilds of Arizona as a cover. However, once word from Arthur Weasley came about a war in the Wizarding World, Amos quickly made his way back to London. Now, he is transferring to a higher position within the Werewolf Support Services in the Being Division. His goal is to become the Head of the entire department to make a good life for his family and provide when he decides to settle down.

ROLE WITHIN THE ORDER/THOUGHTS ABOUT THE ORDER:

Now back home, Amos is making his rounds to old friends and networking. Many of them have joined the Order – or family members within it. Having no siblings himself, he cares deeply for his old schoolmates and those fighting for justice. He will help in any way he can, but, behind the curtain. His heart is big and gives to many, but he also has a name to uphold and a reputation that he built himself. Amos cannot just go blindly into battle. Besides all of that, he does want to build a life with someone after the war, giving hope to others.

SURVIVAL:

Amos Diggory relies, not only on his magical skills, but also his intellect, and charm. As a member of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Amos Diggory has a high level of knowledge regarding Magizoology. He knows how to classify many different beasts and beings, and the various laws regulating the ownership of such creatures – such as Ban on Experimental Breeding. In other words, work for their agenda without retaliation.

As for charms, Amos can produce a non-corporeal patronus charm as well as many other incantations (like the eradication spell) that make others consider him an accomplished wizard. In short, he survives because of his unique skills he offers the Ministry and not being outspoken about his opinions. While he disputes blood supremacy, he must keep his head down. For his career and future family. While with the Order, Amos hopes to become an ally within the Ministry for them. He realizes how important their work is and to have friends woven into the system.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Amos has a rather brotherly friendship with Arthur Weasley’s siblings (whom he would later become further acquainted with at the Ministry for work). Being schoolmates, the pair of gingers and Amos had fun roaming the halls and getting themselves into playful trouble. Even after Hogwarts, they continued to visit and write each other often. He then grew a friendship with Arthur with their work – then becoming familiar with Molly and (of course) the Prewett twins. In fact, Amos is rather fond of them – admiring their skills greatly. He would like to think he has a cordial relationship with them, considering he’d do anything for both of the Weasley and Prewett families. Perhaps he even has a well-hidden crush on one of the twins – or both.

As for anything romantic, Amos did have a fair crush on Andromeda Black, but knew she was bound to marry an older and successful Pureblood male, so never made it known to anyone but Arthur. Imagine Amos’ surprise when he heard about Ted! For years, he has been travelling all across Europe, and even visited many parts of the world. With that, Amos had shared a few beds (of both men and women) to ‘get it out of his system’ before his Pureblood family expects him to marry a proper Pureblood woman.

WHAT PRIVILEGES AND BIASES DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE?

Being a Pureblood and a male, Amos had had few disadvantages in life and is well aware of it. He denounces blood supremacy – believing wholly that family is what you make it and anyone is worthy to study magic. He supports all students with non-magic parents to study at Hogwarts.

Working with beasts and beings, Amos wants a better world for the creatures that cannot voice for themselves. It is the non-humans and beings he has a bias towards. Those with human qualities, a voice, and can fend for themselves. Particularly, this is because of an old grudge he holds against the house-elf Tilly that abandoned him after his parent passed away at a young age.

PLOT DROP IDEAS:

No wife / family / Cedric yet. Amos is definitely looking to settle down though. Being from a Pureblood family, he will look at the aristocratic women in that society. For instance, a woman like Emma – although a bit older. Or the beloved Andromeda.

Something between Remus and Amos since he’s now in the department of Werewolf Support Services & something about looking at the creatures being recruited for the Death Eaters. Working with so many beasts and beings that have seen such cruelty in the world, Amos merely wants to help make it brighter for them; give them a future.

Honor. Dignity. Pride. A dictum of all the facets that embodied the Diggory family. Their beliefs were traditional, being a Pureblood house. Born on September 22nd, Amos Rigel Diggory grew up in a home his father constructed himself in Devon, England. With Amos as their only child, Domhnall Diggory and Isabella Tabor raised Amos with these ideals of family and devotion. Their goal was to make him a proper Pureblood aristocrat – who could manipulate any situation into his favor and even charm others as well. All to uphold the family name and blend in with the other Pureblood families – with a mask of a ‘proper gent’ in society.

Growing up in Devon, a young Amos met the Weasley brothers. Not only this, but the fertile and hills of the Shire land was also the home to the Lovegood and Fawcett families. With that, Amos quickly found his “siblings” with the family members of his neighbors. Going to school with many of them made their little adventures within the fallen Tudor towers, riverbanks, and grasslands all the better! The youthful Diggory was curious and eager for news of the outside worlds – Magical and Muggle alike. He grew fond of the various little creatures like the bowtruckles and erklings near his home. Although, his mother’s emphasis on being a ‘Pureblood Gentleman’ took his innocence away slightly. Amos was quickly carted off into playing an instrument, studying etiquette, having a fit physique, disciplining of the mind, meeting with other Pureblood families frequently, parties, seeing sports as a luxury, and (of course) good marks in school. Meanwhile, his father put an emphasis on politics – often taking him to the office, showing him card games (along with betting fellow Ministry employees and even kissing arse at times), a prejudice against non-humans (categorized as ‘beings’ in the Ministry – which are much different from beasts, of course), and an understanding of the dark arts. Amos was to be ‘the perfect Purebood prospect’ for their family.

And that he was.

Even if he incorporated his own agenda into it.

In school, raised to be the charmer that he was, Amos shined as a ‘fun and sociable’ young man. While also loyal and determined to excel in magic, Amos was sorted into the Hufflepuff house – to his absolute delight. Immediately taken to Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts, Amos wormed his way as many of the faculty’s favorite. Even if he had skipped assignments, which he would never do (from pride alone), all he had to do was flash a smile and was in the clear. Although, his favorite subjects were Care of Magical Creatures – from pure nostalgia alone – and Transfiguration. With many friends and favor of the professors, Amos had a bit of an ego. His weaknesses were a lack of humility, insecurities, and a temper that could easily get him in trouble with other classmates.

Amos’ anger surged even more after the death of his parents. First his father from an illness, and then his mother from heartbreak. It made Amos much more somber and dedicated to his schoolwork. Especially when their house-elf Tilly left him on his own. He supposed the betrayal to the family was because Amos disregarded him completely when he was home – if he was ever there. Without any aunts or uncles to turn to for help, Amos became consumed in working new jobs in London, seeing the Underground world. There, he made himself good friends with the innkeeper Tom of The Leaky Cauldron. More often than not, when Amos was not in school, he stayed there. Unfortunately, some of his friends drifted away from him and he grew to appreciate times alone, or with only a friend or so. After getting outstanding scores on his N.E.W.T.S, a Pureblood wizard, that had been friends with his father, offered him a few positions within the Ministry. With new opportunities thrust upon him, Amos felt a bit overwhelmed. He took the proper amount of time to himself, ignoring his friends even more as weeks passed by while he tried to resolve the issue himself. However, there was one thing he was certain: the occupation could not be his entire life. He did not want any future family solely revolving around his own career, his own selfish desires. If his parents taught him anything, it was that family had to be put first. Family above all else – then friends and, finally, work.

In the end, working in the Ministry seemed the most promising. With the options laid out before him, the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures seemed the most logical. He could use his skills of Magizoology, that were his top marks at Hogwarts – and rise in the ranks quickly. Not to mention that it was challenging! And Amos loves a good challenge. The work piqued his interests greatly. It was a way to use his skills, travel, and keep a stable (while sometimes dangerous) occupation. His professors were ecstatic and helped him prepare for what he would need and the up-and-coming interviews. Finally, Amos had a dream and lust for adventure.

PRESENT:

Amos has returned to England – taking up residency in his parents’ old home in Devon. However, sometimes with late nights with work, he rents out his old room in the Leaky Cauldron. Before coming back, however, he had traveled all over Europe. The job needed someone with his knowledge of creatures, and dare he say, his Pureblood bias towards non-humans as well to properly carry out the Ministry’s work. And over the years, he noticed more and more strange behavior. To see if some of the beasts in other parts of the world were acting similarly, Amos decided to get a grant from the Ministry to study out of Europe. For about eighteen months, the Beasts Division allowed him to do some of his scholarly work in the Americas. At the time, because of Muggle-wars, the non-magical world was seeing huge economic reforms and impacting how much the Wizarding world could interact and be out in the open. In short, they let him go to America because it was the only place they could afford to. Their homeland was becoming more and more integrated with Muggle turmoil. Once in the United States, Amos stayed in the wilds of Arizona. There, he used studying Thunderbirds as a cover while watching other magical creatures. Now home, he revels in the stories he holds close to his heart (somewhat even bragging to the wrong ears). All the while, their own war rages on.

Wanting a higher position, Amos has looked into the Being Division within the Ministry. Normally, because of his prejudice against non-humans, Amos would have refused. Especially since house-elves are categorized as beings. However, he has been promised a well-respected role in the Werewolf Support Services for a year. All he has to do is keep his head down and do the tasks at hand. Perhaps here, he can get more answers than his travels did. And while a few of his childhood friends continue to aid the Order, Amos cannot help but wonder in ways he can work behind the curtain. For his own peace of mind, and the devotion to those from his youth (a Hufflepuff through and through – and loyal to a fault). As such, he has given himself the task to find the creatures being recruited for the Dark Lord – and which are still unsure of what side to take. Perhaps, he can even use his charms to convince them. However, no matter what, he cannot do more than gather information…quietly. He cannot jeopardize his career or the Diggory name.
