[Hand Kiss]  –  for the sender’s muse to kiss the back of the receiver’s hand. ↳ @magicveiined (cullen) — memes / accepting!
Éowyn had grown excessively used to wearing armor in her time with the Inquisition, so few occasions as there were to dress otherwise. There'd been some vanity in her packing anything else, some vain hope that she might one day return to days of peace. That she might have the chance to wear fine clothes without worrying if they will be pierced by something fast-moving and sharp, aiming for her heart.
In preparation for the ball at the Winter Palace, Éowyn pulled out an old favorite gown of hers, well-worn but also well-loved, as only a very skilled seamstress looking quite closely could tell it had been mended in several places. Nevertheless, she was a vision in simple, shimmering white, from her shoulders to her toes, her bright hair tied back in a crown of interlocking braids, the rest left to fall in pale gold waves down her back.
And as they entered the Winter Palace, Éowyn held herself as though she'd never left court—shoulders back and chin lifted, an air of noble pride about her features. She was, every inch, the White Lady of Rohan again. Yet she could not help the smile which blossomed on her face when Cullen approached in his own finery.
"You polish up well, Commander," she said, offering a slight bow. He reached for her hand then, pressing a swift kiss to her knuckles as though he might lose his nerve if he took too long. Éowyn's smile broadened just a little to reach her eyes, and she gave his fingers a slight squeeze before drawing back her hand. "You must save me a dance, if you will be dancing at all." The slight spark of amusement in her sharp grey eyes spoke to how difficult she found it to imagine him doing so.

Absolutely ADORE the summaries you made for your OCs, we stan disaster women doing bad/questionable things in this house 💕
I am so bad at coming up with, like, specific questions lmao so maybe you could just share your favorite things or fun little headcanons you rarely ever get to talk about for these lovely ladies in your brain? Ngl I am so easily invested in other people's OCs so I want to know all the things
you are too kind omfg 🥰 me and my disaster bitches stan U!
let’s see… i’ll talk about themes. sometimes i’m just surface level humor about them but let’s get deep! myrei is a lannister so you know she’s incredibly privileged and far removed from the lives of average folks. i like to explore the way she was sheltered and once she’s married to someone who exposes her to more different ways of life, there’s a lot of self reflection that goes on with her. she also develops a lot of maternal love and the depths of that love are shown throughout the story.
rohan deals with themes of fuck capitalism, basically. her job represents everything wrong with the current system — she’s overworked, underpaid, doing duties that stress her disability, and dealing with shitty people who work above her that she has to listen to/follow instructions from. and when she leaves that, there’s a definite sense of liberation even if she DOES go full villain about it. she doesn’t lose her values completely lol!
mae and zeet actually go together really well in this way, they’re in the same fandom and that’s where their similarities end to the untrained eye, but they both really focus on deconstructing the american dream. zeet’s family tree has been hunting for financial success and security for generations and they finally achieve it. mae has been working her whole life for fame and fortune, and she achieves it too. at what cost? don’t WORRY about that!
maría is one of my favorite ocs i’ve ever made. she represents survival at all costs. when she makes her big decision, she’s fever-ridden and starving, and who knows if she’d have done the same thing if she weren’t ill? but she gets it in her head that the only way to do this and still manage to go to heaven is to nourish the child with the father. so bye bye juan lol.
beatriz is actually based on a couple of true stories! there were women in the depression and the times afterward who were in similar situations and nearly got evicted, but if they were loved by the townspeople, they often got help uhhhh taking care of the problem. and beatriz was loved by the community as their seamstress and dressmaker, so she got help. her theme is protection.
so yeah! sorry for the novel, hope u liked it!

Elfwine Chronicles (new LoTR stories, Home, ch 2 posted, 8-5-23)
Esgalmir discovers far more on her trip to Rohan than she ever imagined.  (Family, Drama, Insecurity, Romance, Friendship, Angst, Humor) (2 chapter story)
Chapter 2
In the aftermath of the wedding, the guests began to trickle out of Edoras, anxious to return to their homes before bad weather was upon them, and life at Meduseld resumed some semblance of normalcy.
As they began to settle in, Theodred recommenced his work interviewing townspeople, which left Esgalmir with more free time on her hands.  After having worked for virtually her entire life, albeit without a choice in doing so, it felt strange to be a lady of leisure now.  With winter drawing near, she could not miss the hustle and bustle of Meduseld, and Theodred had mentioned how it was common in Rohan for all to pitch in to get the work done.
She wrestled with the matter for two days and finally determined to broach the subject with the queen.  After dinner one day, when only she, Lothiriel and Dariel had been in attendance, she lingered when Dariel excused herself.  Before Lothiriel could leave the table, Esgalmir cleared her throat and ventured, “My lady, I wonder if I might have a word with you?”
Lothiriel’s eyes lifted to chastizingly gaze upon the woman next to her, saying gently, “Esgalmir, please, call me Lothiriel.  You need not be so formal unless we are in public.  I already think of you as my daughter.”
Esgalmir swallowed hard, still finding it difficult, even after all this time, to comprehend the love and acceptance she had found among Theodred’s family and friends.  No one she had met here had been anything less than kind to her, far different than the way she had been treated even in her brother’s home.  Taking a steadying breath, she smiled gratefully in response and nodded, “Thank you.  I will try to remember.  It is difficult to become accustomed to such informality.”
The queen reached out and stroked her cheek lovingly.  “Then we will persist until it is second nature to you!  Now, what did you wish to speak with me about?”
“I...I would wish for an occupation.  I want to contribute in some fashion.  I have been used to working all my life and I know that there is much to be done.  Theodred has told me that everyone contributes here, and I would like to do my part.”
Lothiriel eyed her carefully, then said, “You do understand that we do not expect you to earn your keep?”
“Yes.  I know it is not like it was in Gondor.  Please do not think I consider you anything like my brother.  But all of you contribute, and as part of the family, I wish to do so also.”
A smile slid over the queen’s face and she nodded in approval.  “Very well, then I would ask you to observe.”
Esgalmir’s brow knit perplexedly.  “Observe?  How is that helpful, if I may ask?”
“It may not seem so at first, but you have little experience outside of Gondor, and I am certain you have already seen how different Rohan is.  I want you to spend time carefully observing the fabric of Rohan’s society.  Come to understand how the people interact – the various classes between each other and between themselves, families, men and women, lords and servants.  All of it.  Come to understand the hierarchy of servants within the royal household, and what we as royals are allowed to do and not do within that structure.  It is a bit more complicated than it might first appear, though certainly far simpler than the complex drama of Gondor, I assure you!  Then once you have a better understanding of it, you will better know how you might be able to contribute to it, and what your talents and skills can offer.  We have bakers and seamstresses, but still our abilities in cooking and sewing can be useful.  And there are other things as well.  Watch and learn, and then we will find you occupations to fill your time.”
Esgalmir nodded slowly, considering all this.  She had not thought it such a complicated request, but now she could see that perhaps there was a great deal more involved than she had taken into account.

Thinking about Minas Tirith upon return of the king, having been under wartime conditions and staggering under the weight of recovering. Those who could get away from the White City are slow to return, and those who stayed are exhausted, only for the powers that be to announce a coronation, and every weaver and seamstress in the city has a fit. They've been working their fingers raw on bedsheets and smocks and bandages for the healers, working double because half the women in the city have been sent away, the ones who have fathers or husbands who they never learnt to disobey, and now somehow there needs to also be outfits for a fine occasion? Sure, those who left are trickling back in, but the nobility are arriving far faster than that, and it's sure to be an unmitigated disaster
Where I'm going with this, of course, is Eowyn and Arwen earning the love of the people by joining the common women at loom and needle to help with their own coronation garments and those of as many others as they can manage. Arwen is granddaughter of Galadriel, who wove those cloaks after all, and Rohan is not so above itself that daughters of the king's household don't learn to weave and sew as well as to embroider, for Eowyn needs to wear something if she's to be rolling about in the dirt learning the sword
Perhaps Eowyn's arm is not recovered enough for her to do the fine embroidery, but she can weave bandages to free a more skilled pair of hands from the grunt work. She can weave trim and so on. Arwen, of course, is highly skilled in elven embroidery patterns that the nobility of Gondor love so well, but she also spins as fine a thread as any have seen, and is much in demand for that when she proves she doesn't consider herself above the spinsters and will work in wool and flax as happily as the expensive silks and cottons
Also like,,,,, Eowyn&Arwen mutual admiration society I care about this a lot. Eowyn is starstruck to learn that this high Elven lady carried a sword with her on the road to Gondor as well as spinning and weaving with all evidence of enjoyment. Arwen has never been to Rohan in living memory, and is entirely fascinated by the culture and traditions and patterns of craft that have sprung up and wants to know about all the little magics Eowyn was taught live in the warp and weft

Hi hun! So, on my other blog, I'm sure you saw me rambling about my idea for the Character x Seamstress S/O fanfics. I wanted to get your opinion on something when you find the time.
You know how you always used to write those "Which Lotr Character would most enjoy a cottagecore s/o" requests for me? Could you please do one of those with a Seamstress s/o? Like which Lotr and The Hobbit Characters would most appreciate a seamstress girlfriend? Thank you kindly, and I hope you're doing well hun!!
Here you are love! I hope you enjoy. I have your other ask, and i promise i'm getting to it, but I might have to do it during the weekend since it's the last two days of classes and everything's being a bit rushed.
Lotr:
Eomer:
Tumblr media
Eomer would be head over heels for a cute seamstress s/o! You can bet that he would start commissioning clothing he doesn't need, or intentionally tearing tunic or trousers just so that he could stop by and visit them. I feel like he's the type of person who would start brining little things like treats or flowers whenever he comes visiting. When he's made King of Rohan, he wears some traditional armor that has been passed down through generations, but also commissions the rest of his garb to be made by his s/o, likely with a love confession to follow.
Faramir:
Tumblr media
Faramir would 100% appreciate a seamstress s/o, especially since he knows a thing or two about sewing himself. I can totally see him allowing his s/o to see his late-mother's wardrobe, so that she could study the different patterns and fashions of Gondor nobility, and Faramir would totally gift her her favorite of the dresses and robes. This is going out on a limb here, but since Faramir mentioned in lotr that his clothes as a boy never fit him, i can see that continuing on to his adulthood. Like perhaps his tunic is always just a bit too tight, or something of the sort. When the seamstress takes his measurements and creates clothing that finally fits, he could have married her on the spot.
Aragorn:
Tumblr media
Dirty rugged ranger man would very much love a seamstress s/o. He knows how to sew himself, but without much neatness or grace, and being the ranger that he is, is always having to fix tears and holes in his clothes. When his seamstress s/o comes along, he's ever so thankful that she really knows her stuff, and can make the holes and such almost look like they were never there in the first place. He also starts relying on her to help him with court fashion and 'the noble look' after he becomes king, because she knows whats hot and what's not.
The Hobbit:
Bard:
Tumblr media
Bard would love her character, first and foremost, but, he also very much loves her for how helpful she is. With three children, clothing is always getting torn up, and new clothes are needed every few months or so, especially when his kids go through growth-spurts. All of his children would love her, especially little Tilda, since his s/o starts making little dresses and coats for her dolls from scrap fabrics. But also, have you seen the state of that man's coat? Yeah, his seamstress s/o wouldn't stand for that. She'll either refurbish it so that it looks good as new, or she'll create a whole other new coat for him, that'll keep him even warmer out in the winter. He loves her with all his heart, and never fails to bring home new and beautiful threads from the markets for her work.
Fili:
Tumblr media
My main dwarf Fili. Okay, so he would absolutely adore his seamstress s/o, and being the crown prince of the richest kingdom in middle earth, would 100% order and bring in nothing but the finest fabrics, silks, and furs for her work. She'd learn a whole lot about dwarven fashion and clothing while there, especially how golden thread can be spun into cloth, and how jewels and precious gems are often threaded onto robes. I feel like their first meeting would be her taking his measurements for a commission Thorin asked her to do, and while she's getting a bit blushy at taking the inseam measurements, Fili starts being Fili and makes a few suggestive, but not offensive jokes. It be so cute to see them interacting.
Bilbo:
Tumblr media
This hobbit would be head over heels, because, FINALLY, someone he can talk to about sewing and embroidering clothing. Hobbits have lots of wonderful colors and patterns in their outfits, and I feel like a seamstress would really appreciate all the different styles hobbits have. She would also appreciate the depth at which Bilbo is able to talk about them. He loves commissioning clothing from her, because "There's no one in Hobbiton who comes even remotely close to your skill and dedication. I hardly think I could trust someone else with making my clothes now." It's all very sweet.

______________________________________
Appearance and Personality
Appearance: Celestine has a feminine and slender female body build, looks slightly normal up-close. She has short and curly whisper white to sweet pink ombre colored hair which didn't need to be tied up. She has blush pink colored eyes, which look innocent and beautiful to see. Unfortunately, they can turn into pastel mint, the trigger of the change remains unknown. Celestine is a silent and mature young lady but looks rather empty and hollow inside out.
Personality: Born as the only child in a normal but kingdom-like fantasy called the ‘Kingdom of Priamonia’. Celestine was raised by her mother and her blood-related family. Previously as a young child, she never knew about her reason for living and is rather a silent but curious young girl. Her family runs a jewelry and dress shop, filled with sets, jewelry, and real gems from a mine they have found for others to see.
The current Celestine we’re seeing here is a quiet person and isn’t very talkative, often seen alone in the halls of the campus with an aura that no one can describe. It’s either normal, soft, safe, cold, etc. It changes depending on what she’s speaking through.
The girl is rather emotionless to see, her aura is something the others can feel but her expression couldn’t show it. As if something holding it back deep within her but no one is so sure about it. Despite not showing what she’s feeling, her actions would explain what she’s trying to do. Celestine seems to be honest towards anyone but doesn’t like when someone tries to intervene in her private life.
It’s pretty hard to know what she’s thinking in her head, it looks like she’s lost in her own world. But she can be pretty reckless in any situation, a life-risk taker, no one knows about it.
It appears to hold an older-sister type figure, which a few members will like her being a big sister despite her blank expression. Some students will see the good in her eventually.
Aside from that, Celestine seems a little secretive, or maybe… Too secretive about herself along with her personal life. It felt like she wasn't ready to open up to anyone just yet. Perhaps some insecurities but is well kept hidden in herself from anyone at all.
This young lady is surely elegant, but do be aware. She’s more than what she is. Hiding something? No one knows.
______________________________________
Trivia
-The name 'Celestine' is a girl's name is of Latin origin meaning "heavenly". While her surname 'Fujimura' means wisteria village'; the name is found mostly in western Honshu and the Ryukyu Islands.
-She's inspired by Platinum (From Pocket Mirror), Tamayo (From Demon Slayer), Haruhi Fujioka (From OHSHC), and Hilise Inoaden (From Untouchable Lady).
-She was mistaken to be a noble but she isn't. She and her family were simple commoners.
-Is the member who endured the most chaos Shadley caused. It didn't bother her much though. But she often cleans it up on the daily.
-She has a secret about herself after coming to HSA. Isn't very open about it if it was mentioned.
-Celestine never knew and met her birth father, apparently he passed away after Celestine was still an infant. He was the one who named her after his passing, making her mother a single parent.
-The whole family including Celestine and her mother often visited his grave which is far from their house. Apparently Celestine often visited him whenever she needed his presence, she misses him and never experienced a father's love.
-Her birthday is the day her father died. She visited his grave after celebrating it.
-About four years prior before entering to HSA, she used to have emotions before but became emotionless due to an gruesome accident when she was still back at her village.
-After recovering in the hospital from the accident, she somewhat gained an unknown but a very rare condition. One wrong move it would cost her own life. It is currently unknown whether it's involved with her little secret.
-According to her Mother Vivienne, Celestine looks a lot like her deceased father.
-She made a promise with someone while she was still having her emotions before losing them. Though it wasn't completely human.
-Her voice matches exactly to her current personality. It's unknown whether the tone of her voice can change. Which is why I chose Eri Kitamura to be her voice actor.
-Celestine doesn't have any fear of getting killed despite herself as a human being. Though is she even human though?
-Has a special kind of mirror she kept in her room, and never leaves it.
-She's mostly neutral with her dorm mates.
-After being released from the hospital, she had met someone in a different world and dimension who went through the same issue but different. No one knows who it was.

Chocolate Box Exchange 2019 Letter
Dear Author/Artist,
Thank you for creating something for me! I cannot wait to see what you come up with! I ’m so sorry to be getting this letter up so late. If you’ve started something, please keep going with what you have! But if you are in need of ideas, here are a few things I like (and dislike):
DNWs: major character death, underage, incest, non/dub-con, depictions of abuse/homophobia/racism/transphobia/etc, whitewashing or straightwashing, excessive gore/torture/violence, serious illness, body horror, A/B/O, hardcore bdsm/kink, bestiality, infidelity, angst without at least a hopeful ending
Feel free to write whatever rating you’re comfortable with. If you do write smut, I tend to prefer it on the slightly less graphic side, and always with clear communication and lots of feels
Things I enjoy: strong ladies and admiration between them, fluff, banter, angst with a hopeful ending, humor, balanced and respectful relationships, mutual pining, slow burn, (rivals to) friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, oh no there’s only one bed, huddling for warmth, secret admirer, long awaited reunions
Prompts: I tried to include lots of pairings, so that there would be plenty of options to chose what you’re most comfortable with. I hope it’s not too overwhelming! I love all these pairings, so please choose what you would enjoy creating for the most. If it helps you, here are a few things I like most about these pairings/fandoms:
1. Dragon Age:
So many wonderful ladies, and I ship them all! Anything from banter, to tender moments, to battle scenes would be great! Awkward romantic knights who don’t know how to flirt. Charming rogues! Finding common ground and growing respect. Secret admirer. Stolen tender moments amidst war. Growing old together, or shared pasts. Inquisition shenanigans, pranks, and card games. Competent ladies saving the day.
For Cass/Varric I love enemies to friends to lovers, and gaining mutual respect. Banter! And writing things for each other, as well as reading it aloud! Also, all the ^above!
Cassandra Pentaghast in general, her cheeckbones, and *disgusted noises*.
2. Xena: Daring adventure, impressive acrobatics, witty bards! Teasing, banter, fighting together, and tender moments! Bard!Gabs saving the day! An ever-enduring love! Hugs! BATHS! Soulmates <3 All the tropes and AUs! I also love Lao Ma, and would love to see more of her, if you have an idea for it.
3. Original Works: I picked a whole bunch of OW prompts that sounded interesting, if you feel like being adventurous! Any of these would be really lovely, and my likes and dislikes for other fandoms would apply here as well.
4. SOS: Trio of Towns: It makes me sad this fandom doesn’t have more fanfic! I love all the characters, but Kasumi most of all. Her overcoming her past, her intelligence, empathy, elegance, and her ability to wield a naginata have all won my heart <3 Besides the characters, I also really love the beautiful environments of the game (and if you are ever in need of references, I do have a sideblog for SOS screencaps you can find in my bio).
5. Tortall: Some absolutely badass ladies, who maybe develop feelings for each other while saving the day! And compassionate guys who appreciate the badass women around them! Alanna and Buri being grumpy but also having a wicked sense of humor. Thayet wearing fancy dresses but then riding off in the mud to go save people. Raoul being badass, but also being a complete teddy bear underneath. Flirting. Court intrigue (or maybe avoiding court events). Everything about the George/Alanna grumpy/banter/skilled warriors when necessary dynamic. Lalasa and Tianine being wonderful, skilled seamstresses, AND canon gay characters!
For gen fics - I’d love to see more about the friendship/mentorship between Kel and some of the others. Maybe first impressions, or future reflections about how they’ve grown and changed. Teasing. Jousting.
6. The Dragon Prince: Amaya and Janai just make my heart happy <3 I also love Kazi (the nb sunfire elf translator) and would love to see more of them, if it would fit with the story.
7. Critical Role: I was super excited to hear that two of the coolest goddesses are canonically in love with each other (and dating? do gods date?). Also just, the CR ladies in general are great and I totally multiship them. Feel free to go for some angst with Yasha/Zuala if you choose them, but please not too angsty. I’ll admit part of me still holds out hope for a surprise, happy reunion between them, but that’s also fine if that doesn’t happen.
8. Emelan: I’ve just started getting back into these books, and how I love all these different, complicated characters. all the found family for them pls <3 For Lark and Rosethorn it would be great to see their reunion in Will of the Empress, or perhaps their past before the first books.
9. LOTR: True love beyond mere infatuation (maybe this takes more time than in the books)! Healing together. Tender romantic moments but also fighting together. Eowyn not giving up the sword completely, but also gaining a broader perspective of what’s important (and not thinking she has to die in battle). Eowyn ruling side by side with Faramir. Alternatively, horse-loving Eowyn falling for a sea-loving Lothiriel - I can only imagine the emotions (and potential shenanigans) that might ensue! Would it be love at first sight or rivals to something more? Or perhaps, Rohan allows more women to become warriors after Eowyn and they fall in love?

LONG POST AHEAD
Lukas

LOTR Two Towers; Riders of Rohan
youtube
I used to draw comparisons between Fire Emblem and Lord of the Rings. Something I kinda did again when Valentia came out. Maybe bc I was binge listening to the Two Towers soundtrack while playing. Yeah the Riders of Rohan might work better for cavalry units, but, I think it fit the Deliverance more than any of the Gondor themes did.
Oboro
Tumblr media
Fire Emblem Warriors OST; Justice RIP
youtube
Okay, this is technically cheating, but, then again, Oboro never had a personal theme in Fates/Warriors anyway, so I think it works xD. This was one of my favorite map themes, and since I typically think of Rinkah when I hear Road Taken, Oboro is who I think of when I hear Justice RIP. Also, I like the Warriors mix of it.
Bonus: PSYCHOBORO
Tumblr media
KH 2.8 OST; Mirror Aqua
youtube
A lot of people felt this song perfectly encapsulated Aqua’s descent into madness due to her long time in the KH equivalent of Hell. Considering Oboro has gone on a downward spiral after Takumi and Hinata’s deaths in Conquest, this beautiful melody with a twisted twist in it matches the seamstress’ broken mind.

Help me decide which WIPs to start working on
Since editing the new chapter seems to be going well (though I still have the trickiest part to do, gulp) I'm thinking about what to do next since I'm really enjoying this fic-writing thing again. I probably won't be able to dive straight into the next chapter, so I thought I'd work on one or more of my long-neglected WIPs.
Because I enjoy writing stories that people want to read, and because I'm not feeling particularly passionate about any one WIP, I decided to ask my followers which one(s) sound most interesting to them. So reply and let me know!
Please note that I'm not making any guarantees that any of these fics will get finished, or when it might happen. But I'll try! And I'll try harder on those fics that anyone expresses enthusiasm for.
(Conversely, if you reply to this, you are of course not obligated to comment or even read a finished fic. Though of course I hope you will at least give it a chance.)
Fics of which I have a substantial percentage written already and would thus probably complete more quickly:
Finrod/Amárië. I have a messy selection of half-finished scenes written about them, ranging from their first meeting as children to Finrod leaving Aman to their eventual reunion. Romance
Further parts of Alasselië's story (Noldorin seamstress from Eagerness and unrest): adjusting to life in Hithlum and then Himring, also deals with Maedhros' recovery. There are several almost-finished chapters which are Gen, but I also have material for romance (Maedhros/this OFC. I have no idea if anyone would read those, and if it would be better to stick to Gen with this OFC)
Teenage Maedhros and Fingon discuss grandmothers. Short oneshot. Gen
Lothíriel, queen of Rohan born princess of Dol Amroth, reminisces about her long life at its end. Oneshot. Gen with dashes of romance
Curufin & Netyarë, horseback riding and bantering and rolling in the grass. Oneshot. Romance with attempts at something approaching smut
Ideas I've thought about but haven't written more than some messy sentences:
6. Curufin and Celebrimbor have a tense discussion in Nargothrond about power and weapons and metalwork, while avoiding talking about blood in all relevant senses. Oneshot. Gen. (Kind of related to Crowns and sons, gold and blood.)
7. A fic from Indis' POV that is as much about the relationship between Míriel and her and Míriel and Finwë than it is about Indis and Finwë's love. Oneshot. Romance/Family/Friendship themes

Tutelage  (Ch 3 of LoTR story posted, 9-12-20)
Lothiriel happily lived her life vicariously through her reading, but then she met Eomer of Rohan, and found not everything was contained in her beloved books. [Complete in 7 chapters.]
 Chapter 3
As the cortege entered what they called the Folde, the atmosphere of the host seemed different to Lothiriel. Despite the somber occasion, there was an excitement among the Rohirrim, and after pondering it she began to understand that they were glad to be home, whatever the circumstances.  Their last night on the road, they stopped at Aldburg, the original ruling city of the Riddermark according to her notes, and Lothiriel was grateful for the opportunity for a bath and a true bed to sleep in, at least for one night.  Amrothos had not exaggerated the trials of such extended traveling, and she would be very pleased to reach Edoras and not have to see a tent again for some time.
She was surprised to learn at supper that the house where they were lodging was not an inn, or a high-ranking nobleman’s house, but the ancestral home of the king himself.  Erchirion had mentioned it in passing, and Faramir elaborated on it as he sat beside her, telling her that when Brego, son of Eorl the Young, built Meduseld and moved his home to Edoras, the house in Aldburg had been given to Brego’s third son, Eofor.  This Eofor was an ancestor of Eomer’s father, Eomund, and so Eomer had inherited and made it his dwelling when his base of operations as Third Marshal was in Aldburg.  She looked around her with more curiosity, thinking to better understand the man by observing his home.  But it did not offer any appreciable clues that she could discern.  While perhaps the furnishings were a bit finer than average, she could not detect anything remarkable here.  It was of rough-hewn wood construction, as most of the buildings in the town seemed to be.  One thing was certain though – there was little evidence of a woman’s touch.  She was not at all surprised that this was the home of an unwed man.
Once the meal had concluded, the guests began to informally mingle, and Lothiriel wandered the few rooms where they gathered in small groups talking.  Having perused the furnishings, and tapestries hung on the walls, there was little else to be seen, so she found an out-of-the-way nook with a seat, and settled there.  Though pockets were not common in ladies’ gowns, she had expressly had her seamstress sew one into as many of her gowns as would accommodate such.  One large enough to hold a small book.  Thus she could tuck something there, and if the evening proved tedious she could find a place to sit and read until it ended. She knew it displeased her father that she did not put more effort into socializing with others, but she could not stomach the often silly, pointless conversations that were held.  Now she drew forth her notes on Rohan, and began going over what she had learned of Edoras, in preparation for their arrival on the morrow.
She had been happily ensconced there for only about a quarter of an hour when a shadow fell upon the page she was reading.  “And what holds your attention so fixedly, my lady? Are you still attempting to learn our language?”
She had not noticed the king approaching, but now looked up with irritation at his teasing remark.  “Why do you belittle my efforts to read of Rohan, and learn more about your people?” she challenged petulantly.
Sighing, Eomer fixed her with a disconcerting gaze.  “You will not find my people in the pages of your books.  At best, they will only tell you of a few men or women, and only moments in their lives.  It will not truly show you who they are, and why they are the way they are. You are in Rohan, my lady.  You would do better to speak to living, breathing people here. You would learn far more of value that way than by sitting alone off in a corner hidden behind a book!”
Lothiriel did not know how to respond to his declarations.  Part of her was uncomfortably aware of the ring of truth in them, yet she could not bring herself to admit it.  Just then, Imrahil joined them, seemingly unaware of the tension between the two, and drew Eomer away to review the plans for tomorrow’s arrival at Edoras, leaving his daughter flustered and annoyed.  Why was the king so set on harrassing and scorning her activities?  What was it to him if she liked to read?  She was becoming less and less inclined to think this visit to the Riddermark was worthwhile.  If all the people of Rohan were as haughty as he, then she would just as soon not be acquainted with them!
