4. What would your Dark Urge consider to be their greatest flaw? Is this accurate?

Their lack of perfect self-control. They regret Quil’s death for the fact that she should be alive now, yes, but also for the way it highlights a failure of control on their part. 

It is accurate to an extent, but also… not. The standard of perfection Kelis holds themself to would be difficult to attain even for a standard mortal, let alone someone with the deck stacked against them from the start in such a way.

17. What is your Dark Urge’s greatest regret?

[Serious]: The decades they spent under the thumb of Bhaal, controlled by the bloodthirst instead of controlling it themself. They don’t regret individual acts in more than a general sense, but they hold self-control in utmost regard, and it sickens them that their old self thought they were in control, while walking step-by-bloody-step along the path laid out for them. 

[Flippant-but-Still-Dead-Serious]: The few secrets they failed to uncover in the areas they explored over the course of their initial quest. When they find out about the entire hidden basement at the Arcane Tower, they transform into an owlbear and take off to sulk for an entire day about it. They were meticulous. They were thorough. They were desperate for answers. How could they have missed something in hindsight so blatantly obvious?!

The site Tobar An Dualchais is a collection of historic audio recordings in Scotland, and that includes songs. I collected just some of the folklore related ones into a list for you all.

I have no talent in singing, so I will have to leave that up to the rest of you. Some are in English, and other are in Gaelic.

Kelpies and Each-Uisge 🐎🌊

(link) A MHÒR, A MHÒR, TILL RID MHACAN. "This song, which was used as a cradle song, was said to have been a lament composed by a water-horse(each-uisge) whose mortal lover had gone, taking their child with her. He is pleading with her to return. " (Recorded in 1956)

(link) A GHAOIL LEIG DHACHAIGH GU MO MHÀTHAIR MI "This song takes the form of a conversation between a girl and a water-horse. The girl is asking him to let her return home to her mother. The water-horse has other ideas. It is clear from the last verse that the girl escaped. " (Recorded in 1954)

Sule Skerry shows up in folklore as the home of the selkies.

My blog title had been "Pinniped Utopiae" for a while and at some point I thought that the pinniped utopia would, of course, be called Sule Skerry. So I changed it to match.

2. First ever ship: uhhhh truly impossible to say, childhood memories are hard to order and i mostly just enjoyed any and all fanworks without a specific ship in mind. maybe sesshoumaru/kagome?

3. Last song: The Ladder of Supremacy by Coheed and Cambria. it was pointed out to me how much it reads like a raphael song, and then i read haarlep into it too and it was over for me.

also, the Main Theme from Bramble: The Mountain King. i just got done playing it with my brother, it's an amazing exploration of folklore, horror, and storytelling, and the music is incredible. i'm a simple void - you incorporate a hurdy gurdy, you have my heart.

4. Last film: i'm cheating a little because i rarely watch movies and noting the one we're going to be watching tonight: Last Holiday. it's my favorite holiday movie and has such a warm wish fulfillment vibe. also i get to see nathan ford, my beloathed, get clowned on.

5. Currently reading: i just finished a multi-count re-read of The Half-Life of Element Zero by GraphiteGirl. it's one of my favorite da:i fics, a really well-thought-out crossover with mass effect, and the main character is incredibly complex and appreciable. if you have been avoiding reading it because it is unfinished, i really encourage you to try it out anyway.

6. Currently watching: i don't have the time/desire really to watch tv shows on my own, but my friends and i are slowly working through all the seasons of leverage.

7. Currently consuming: tea and chilean thousand layers cake

Heroic Company - silly, self-indulgent Ves/Shani post-TW3 oneshot that started from a doodle of them playing gwent on a bed together and then somehow developed some serious undertones and a sequel (which will, I swear, be updated. I’m trying to get a good amount done before I start uploading chapters).

Also this is taking place after a bigger post-TW3 WIP in which Roche gets the usual (and beautiful) whumpy-road-to-redemption treatment and while writing that I kept getting side-tracked with Ves’ side of the story instead, so now she’s getting her own what-comes-after where she gets to be more than an accessory to Roche’s story.

Hidden Gems

The Great Shithead of Sule Skerry and Seventh Tear into the Sod  (Witcher)- I’ve had an idea in my head for a while about the remainders of the bear school making their own little home in Skellige, and started trying to draw that together in Save a Witcher Bingo. Whilst also indulging my need for selkies that are actually as big thuggish predators as seals are (but still round and squishy). 

Which is how we got the meeting and misadventures of two giant, grumpy, emotionally stunted cross-species idiots, slowly figuring their shit out.

Very self-indulgent considering it’s an OC and a character so very minor they’re basically an OC anyway, but, I enjoy it.

On the one hand, it’s nice to see people from all over the world enjoying old tales in new ways, and also a folk tale or creature from one culture usually has parallels or shares common motifs with tales in other cultures so it’s not totally unique.

But there’s also something a bit sad about seeing a specific ballad or fairytale creature from your own childhood or culture all over the internet and in literature, absolutely stripped of its particular regional context, history, and tradition, and turned into a generic Fantasy Character. And it makes for a lot of conflicting feelings.

#This could literally be anything from selkies to Tam Lin with me #On the one hand I love seeing some people's new creations or discussion of wider folk motifs and parallels across the world #On the other hand these are very specific things to me #The more generic they become the less recognisable they are until the great silkie of sule skerry is no more Shetland than a Greek siren #And the old ballads from places as different as Aberdeenshire and the Borders might as well be from Kent #And don't even get me started on fairies #Which of course have very different aesthetics depending on the specific region- and the Western Isles and Berwickshire are very different #Then there's the emigrant adaptations of these stories that have mixed with other cultures in Australia; America; Canada e.t.c. #I'm fascinated by the new meanings that old fairy beliefs from Scotland and Ireland have taken on in North America #But they are not the same #And Scottish and Irish fairy beliefs though similar have some rather different characteristics too #This even extends past folklore and into history in some cases I think #If I could count the number of people who mention the North Berwick witch trials with no deep knowledge of the Scottish context #It was part of a wider European trend certainly but even the differences to nearby England were vast #Anyway I digress #That's my little bit of a moan tonight but also not really a moan #Because it's still interesting to see new adaptations and the place old stories have in a wider cultural world #I just sometimes wish that we would be more specific- sometimes I get the feeling that 90% of Scotlands ballads are called English #There are certainly English variants of many of them (and there's a huge cultural history between the two countries) #But sometimes it's important to know where the things you are using come from *specifically* #Or at least where the particular *terms* you are using come from #Anyway to change the subject and just to plug some favourites- away and look up Thomas the Rhymer (sort of a real person?) #and the Reverend Robert Kirk ('the Secret Commonwealth of Elves Fauns and Fairies') #Oh and while there's a Pullman reference- Johnny Faa was a real person #He was a sixteenth century Romani living in Scotland #He's important both in the history of the Roma in Scotland but also because of how he's portrayed in Scottish ballads #(which I think say something about both the romanticisation and also the stereotypes/fears surrounding the Roma community #among non-Romani Scots- but it's not my speciality) #There were a lot of languages and different cultures mixing in medieval Scotland is all I mean #And selkies and kelpies and brownies and red caps stem from a lot of different traditions and languages
