Ultimate Incest Tournament - Round 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Cain/Abel:
Is it not the first murder? Is it not the first perversion of the family structure?
Born from the first sin, here lies the family sickness (born dead) that rots the first of mankind. The original brother-brother tragedy. We kill those we love so that we may suffer. Etc.
He is not his brother's keeper. And yet, isn't he? Held his brother's life in his hands, kept it and then freed it. Isn't hate that intense a form of love? Want and hate and anger all wrapped up in a bow
Sam/John:
Underrated Full House of Wincest variant. The younger son who defies his father in everything and runs away to escape the violent, isolated life he was raised in, only to be drawn back when his dad goes missing. It's all about the control/rebellion struggle and the love that persists despite it.
he's John's little boy <3 via John's journal we know John sees a lot of Mary in Sam. they fight a lot and no one can rile John up like Sam does. Sam is all the more precious bc John has to keep him safe from both other hunters and Sam's destiny
Their arguments and fights that look like they're so close to coming to physical blows. makes the hatefucking headcanons so hot. but also we can tell that they love each other so so much. and john choosing to lovingly stalk sam in secret at stanford to check up on him instead of actually talking to him <3
A father who thinks his son was born tainted? That there is something wrong with him?? A father who almost shot him because he beloved it was for the better??? A son who is compared so much to his mom???? Who is just rebellious and always butting heads with his father because he refuses to do what his father wants????? And so obviously his father has no choice but to fuck him, duh

Note
I saw you used to dislike Obi/Ani but you don't anymore.
I'm not an anti idm what you ship I'm just curious how it happened
Hi! It's pretty much just, "I watched The Clone Wars and got smacked in the face with how they did not act like I thought they would." When I first stumbled back into Star Wars, it had been a very long time since I'd been into it, probably since a bit before AOTC came out, and so I was originally a Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan shipper. You could pretty much go down the line of Hot Takes Of SW Fandom and I bought into all of them--the Jedi were stagnant and brought about their own downfall, Anakin was kind of abused by them and not responsible for his own actions, Obi-Wan was Anakin's dad, the prequels were bad movies, Hayden Christensen's acting was terrible, etc. I was on all those trains. Then I just. Watch The Clone Wars. "Huh," I thought. "Obi-Wan's actually kind of trying to help Anakin here and Anakin's not listening." I watched some more. "Wow," I thought. "That is some very flirty dialogue they have going there. 'Study the bottom of my boot!' and 'Two steps forward and you'd be kissing it.' really??" I watched even more. "Wait," I thought. "The Jedi seem like they're actually right about a lot of this stuff, the Force and politics and the Separatists are actually going to kill everyone if they don't fight back and the Force really does need you to be calm and the dark side is in all of us but it's something you have to let go of." And then I started watching George Lucas interviews. "Ohhhhh," I thought. "The Jedi ARE right about 97% of everything and Anakin DID have help offered and chose to push them away because he was too afraid and didn't want to live a life that accepted things were transient and impermanent." Ultimately, it just comes down to that I never had any moral or ethical objection to Obikin, I just didn't feel the chemistry was right for me. But I watched more of The Clone Wars, I went back to the movies and saw ohhhhh no those two do not feel like they see each other as father and son to me, however, I do feel that from Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan now (ehhhh sort of), so that one's squicky to me now, personally, but I get Obikin. (And I still have no moral or ethical objection to Q/O, I get why people ship it, they see it differently than I do. I get why people are squicked by Obikin, they see it differently than I do! Both are are valid positions to have.) It helped that the Obikin part of fandom was very fun and there's a lot to be made of the Mustafar fight feeling like a big, dramatic divorce, that there are moments from official creators (like Stover's novelization or Gillard's interviews or even some of the things Lucas says about their narrative roles in the bigger story) that just sort of all helped ease the way further, but primarily it was just: Man, those two flirted in TCW and it tickled my brain chemistry real good.

George's Relationship with his Father
I have some thoughts about the relationship George McFly has with his dad, Arthur McFly. I'll put it under a cut because it's gonna get long. And I mean long.
Tumblr media
Okay, while watching a playthrough of the BTTF game I noticed that George says this:
"Hey, sometimes you gotta go out on a limb for the ones you love, right? I wish MY dad had understood that."
I'm like, "Woah, what? What's his relationship with his father like???" So I head over to the wiki and find THIS:
Tumblr media
"Here we see that Arthur is about as wimpy and spineless as George since he gives his son many pathetic reasons not to attend such as college being hard and his grades that he received in school. He even tells George that he will never succeed in life with his current grades and such which could be the primary reason why George becomes a pushover in the original 1985."
Furthermore, he's described to be "a dead ringer for 1955 George in looks, voice, and personality."
Obviously George doesn't (or didn't, since he's implied to be dead) have a very good relationship with his father. But what's really interesting about this is the fact that they're practically the same personality-wise. (They're both pathetic, pushovers, doormats, etc.) Do you think that George sort of resents himself for acting the way he does (or did, in the case of the new timeline)? Because he hurt others the way his dad hurt him, since his actions reflect his father's? God, that's sad to think about.
You would think, in the case of the original 1985, that he would actively try to stray away from being like his father, but obviously, he failed. This is true to real life generational trauma, in which you swear you will never end up like your parents, but you do anyway because the way they treat you and act sticks with you. Yeah, you get the point right?
George's dreams got shot down by his father, and in the original 1985, he didn't have the courage to stand up for himself. Arthur never stood up for him either; and George ends up just like him, albeit more passive... at least he lets Marty do whatever he wants for the most part. Speaking of which, I think Marty serves as an interesting parallel to George's relationship with Arthur, since Marty actually gains a lot of courage and confidence due to the fact that his father is a pushover. George loses more of his sense of self worth because of his dad, since he never believed in or helped him. As a result, he never tries to achieve his dreams and remains unmotivated.
Now let's switch gears to the new 1985. Because of Marty's help, George gains the courage to stand up to his bullies and thus, becomes a more confident person. He gets motivated to do better. I'd like to think that because of this, George also stands up to his dad as well, becoming more successful in the process. I think that he sort of wanted to stick it to his dad, to prove that he can be successful and that he could do anything he set his mind to. This probably pushes George to work harder, which ultimately pays off as seen in the ending of Back to the Future 1. He had achieved his dream as a writer and had a better life overall. However, it seems that George's success hadn't changed his father one bit, as seen in the clip I included above. Even though George ended up happier and wealthier, it didn't mend his relationship with his dad. I don't think Arthur is necessarily a bad person, but he could've definitely been a better father.
This is an almost tragic part of George's character, even in the fixed timeline. It demonstrates how you could be similar, yet so different from your parents. How the way they treat you impacts the way you act, depending on your circumstances and the way you view yourself. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this worthless ramble!!!

OBELISK - Interview with Ashley McCammon
September 2023
Tumblr media
The year is 1908. Evelyn Reuter is dealing with the affairs of her deceased father in her hometown of Manhattan. While she takes solace in the homes of her queer friends, grief presses in around her until one day... the mysterious Margot appears in her life.
Obelisk is a 16+ gothic horror/romance comic about vampires and lesbianism. In celebration of Obelisk's return from hiatus, we asked author Ashley McCammon @draculings for an interview.
Tumblr media
What was the spark behind making Obelisk? Why a webcomic versus another style of publishing (print, self pub, etc.)?
My original inspiration for Obelisk was in my frustration with lesbian vampire movies - there are so many of them, and none made for a lesbian audience, let alone involving butch women! I wanted to tell that story, and celebrate that point of view. It’s similar to why I chose to set the comic in 1908 - the early 1900s are something of a transitional period, something not explored often when we aren’t talking WWI or the Titanic. I wanted to tell a story about the radical change happening in just a few, unusual people’s lives, in this transitory period. As for it being a webcomic - as a young artist, I always wanted to make one! It’s such an accessible, experimental way to tell a story, where even the website can be part of the atmosphere. Making a deeply atmospheric, spooky comic, that feels the most fitting.
For new readers, how would you describe your two lead women?
Evelyn is muscling through her day to day when we meet her - she’s putting on a brave face, or one that she hopes exudes confidence - but really feels like she has no idea what she’s doing. (The impostor syndrome is incredibly strong - something I think a lot of people can understand!) She’s been left with this enormous responsibility on top of the grief of losing her dad, and having that job and security is pressed on her as something she should be grateful for. She’s absorbed that idea and really hasn’t taken a moment to breathe - or to consider what she really wants for herself. Margot is quite the opposite - she’s a vampire who lives only for her own desires, a hedonist who’s been floating through existence that way for as long as she can remember. For all of her self indulgence though, she’s never connected much with anyone. She holds herself far above people, only ever showing them this facade of a regular person. It’s very arrogant - but it must also be very lonely! (Not that she has anyone to admit that to… yet ;)   )
Tumblr media
What can you tell us about what's lurking for Evelyn in the upcoming chapter?
Evelyn makes a very bold choice at the end of chapter two, one that scares her - putting her own desires first, impulsively, in a way that will change everything and surprise even Margot herself. (Patrons read way ahead and will get to see this very soon, and the time she spends with Margot throughout chapter 3 as a result!)
Obelisk is a traditionally inked piece, with some digital final touches. What guided your decision to make this a traditional comic versus a digital one?
It really wasn’t a choice, to be honest - traditional media is where all my passion for making art lives! Obelisk is drawn and inked traditionally, and finished with Copic markers and the occasional paint pen or colored pencil for that killer red highlight ;)
What are some of the challenges in working this way? What do you find rewarding?
It can be tedious to scan, piece together and clean up my pages, but ultimately I have a fairly streamlined process for it and I don’t mind. I love having a physical final product to look at and hold when I’m done with it, it gives me a sense of accomplishment and connection to my work!
Tumblr media
Do you have any tips for other comic artists on resuming a series after an extended hiatus?
Put your health first, and spend time reconnecting to your story before diving back in. It’s easy to feel obligated by the hamster wheel of social media and garnering attention, but your own connection to your work in the long-term is what matters most. Obelisk wouldn’t be the same story if I hadn’t had that downtime, and it’s off better for it!
What are some comics that inspire you? Do you have any reading recommendations for fans of Obelisk?
As far as webcomics go, I’m a big fan of Tiger Tiger, Hemlock, Barbarous, and Heirs of the Veil!
Tumblr media
What is the best way for fans of Obelisk to support you?
The very best way is through my Patreon! Patrons have immediate access to the next six months of Obelisk pages (that’s my whole buffer!) as well as tons of behind the scenes work as I develop the next chapter and share work-in-progress shots right from my drawing table.
Obelisk updates Wednesdays and can be read for free at obeliskcomic.com 🩸Be sure to white list the site on your ad blocker and follow @draculings for more info and updates!

More asks if you wish!!
2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on
This one rather amuses me, for Scott of course: 31. If the had a tumblr what would it look like?
42. 3 comfort items
@astranite Thank you so much! I actually did 2 (a canon/headcanon hill I'll die on) and several others, I think (which all fall under headcanon)for Scott a while back, and I'm THRILLED to revist it.
CW: we're talking about Scott, so there are LOTS of heavy themes and topics mentioned, angst and death. My mind often goes dark places with him. Tread with caution.
2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on.
I'll do several, because I can.
Scott has a suicidal ideation/death wish. As in, he genuinely thinks he needs to die in sacrifice- the way Dad did. He doesn't actively seek it, but has sort of internalized that as an inevitable fate, because that's the least he can do against the magnitude of Dad's sacrifice.
He blames himself for Dad's death (canon text).
Scott excelled in academia. A prom king, President of the class, sports team captain and a valedictorian both in high school and college.
Scott is 29-ish (under 30) by the end of Season 3. I WILL die on that hill. Symbolically, that means Dad's disappearance spearheaded him into "legal, albeit too young" adulthood, and Dad's recovery ("saving father from the abyss") heralded transition into "full manhood".
Scott will loose a son some time down the line - IR equipment gone wrong, a rescue,  combat etc. (narrative symmetry is a ruthless thing). Sorry. I mulled it over every which way. A lost significant other is a gestalt already closed by Dad Tracy. And in a timeline that is not an incandescent wish-fulfillment HEA, it would unfortunately fall to Scott to experience what his father happily dodged - a son so adamant to follow in his Hero's footsteps, and a father so encouraging and approving of that - he'll pay the ultimate price.
Scott is not close to Grandma (mainly because Scott was close to Mom, aka the woman who took over as #1 in Jeff's life, later Scott is a living, breathing reminder that Jeff is gone, and is a mirror and foil to Jeff's shortcomings).
Scott can play the piano (Mom totally taught him first, having big hopes for those long, long fingers), but he never applied himself to practice the skill, like Virgil did. They can play duet on a very rare, precious occasion, when the mood is right.
Scott is more than a decent dancer - cowboy line and square dancing, but also waltz and tango. It was a Mom thing, originally, the prep for a middle school Formal or something. He later practiced with John, who was too shy to take dance classes. While we are at it - my hard headcanon is that, for all that he's Dad's replica and seeks Dad's approval like air, Scott was close to Mom, her White Knight, and takes after her a lot in mannerisms and character (it's maybe more obvious to the adults in their lives, as the boys' memories of Mom are hazy with every passing year).
Some time far off down the line, Scott will run for World President and win. Maybe it's gonna be one of his tried and true "keeping busy with X is the only thing that keeps me from going crazy" tactics. There's literally no heavier duty than the weight of the whole world.
13. Dumbest thing they’ve ever done.
Got engaged or eloped, even, back in Flight School, to a fellow cadet. His trusted second in an air group and a wingman. Of course they usually got suggestions to "get a room" after flight exercises. At some point they did. Both stupidly young, of course. Scott asked Dad for Mom's engagement ring and withstood Dad's stern questioning stare with a defiant stance that "when you know - you know". Dad had little to object to that, but had his reservations. For one, it was against regulations - Scott was CAG (captain of air group), ergo, within direct chain of command. For two - Jeff already had plans of the Tracy Island and IR well underway. Scott was completely game and ready to join Dad, he believed in IR and Dad's dreams since day 1, since TV-21. Of course, in his idealistic mind the Love of His Life was to join them - an exceptional pilot she'd be a great asset to IR team, they worked seamlessly together. It'd be great! Bereznik recon was to be among Scott's last assignments. Only the fiancée didn't exactly subscribe to idyllic dreams of "getting kittens off trees under Daddy's watchful eye" - she thought they were to share a life of service, career soldiers and fighters, test pilots, command material. She thought Scott was betraying that shared dream in favor of indulging Dad yanking his leash. Mom's ring was returned. The breakup was so earthshattering that it may or may not have made Scott loose focus for a second, while flying over hostile territory. It only took a second... The brothers never knew of that whole relationship and situation, only Dad. And maybe Kyrano. I have a whole fic idea about the ring being first taken off Scott, together with dogtags, in interrogation, then retrieved.
16. Deepest darkest secret they won’t even admit to themselves.
These are things and thoughts Scott hates himself for territory - so, certainly, they would come across as jarring (and vastly untrue) to anyone, who actually knows Scott. I'll do several, because why limit ourselves in ways Scotty's mind would torment him.
Scott has taken a life or lives. Not just by proxy, as in people they couldn't save (Dad being first in line in his mind). And not just in combat/self defense. I think Scott has eased someone's suffering at some point and provided assisted suicide (a fellow POW in Bereznik, a rescuee). It's a whole different pit of hell that haunts him. I'd say Scott also has a DNR and maybe, that one time after a dark day and one too many helpings of scotch he asked either Virgil or John to do the same for him - to mercy kill. Virgil is horrified (Scott's DNR gets ignored on multiple occasions not for nothing), but John promises he'd do it. They all pretend that conversation never happened later.
On very, very bad days that happen more often after SOS, Scott kinda wishes they never found Dad's signal. Dad's signal means not only did he fail to save him, but he failed to search hard enough afterwards and settled into just living on. Scott is also not fooling himself- Dad's signal may mean there's no Dad alive anymore on the other side after eight years in outer space - which means loosing Dad all over again and watching the brothers and Grandma loose Dad all over again. Unthinkable. Unbearable. His fault.
Dad's return is not all unicorns and soothing rainbows. Well, it is - for everyone else. His brothers got Dad back, Grandma got her son back, Lee, Casey, Lord Hugh, Brains and Kyrano got their friend back, Tracy Industries got their CEO back, IR got the Commander back, the world got Jeff Tracy back. Which is all to exemplify how much Scott has been a placeholder in everyone's eyes. The brothers and Kayo can talk Dad's ear off a mile a minute about their pursuits and accomplishments, but Scott hasn't got much to show for it. He's only ever been doing... this "being Jeff Tracy" thing for the past eight years, trying to keep his head above water. He missed Dad to the point of wanting to die - but Dad is not back, advising him how to run the show and being there for him, he's back to pick up where he left off.  Alan and Kayo are even trained enough to fly One now. Why would anyone need Scott anymore? (This DOES NOT lead to any good places or conclusions. Scott's undercurrent fear is to see disappointment and disapproval in Dad's eyes, once the euphoria settles down  and he starts to delve into reports how Scott handled things).
Berezniki guards drilled into him that by the time they're done - noone would want what's left of Scott, broken and damaged beyond repair, and Scott is unsure he still doesn't believe them.
Scott doesn't actively want kids of his own. He loves his brothers beyond anything and Alan is his son in all ways that count. But he can't in good conscience pursue to bring a life into the world and then let it suffer the loss, like he did - Scott doesn't  exactly envision a happily ever after timeframe for himself, where he gets to grow old and be there for the kid(s). Nor does he envision a timeframe where he's loved and seen by someone to want to eventually stick around and raise a family. (Let's not forget these are dark, secret assumptions, and Scott is, obviously, way off the mark in them).

“🎶dad’s going to kill you🎶”
I feel like this scene gets twisted & mixed up a lot & part of that is weird ret cons in the comics that I’d prefer not to get into but in the context of the show, let’s remember this is a 7(?) year old. Now as an adult sometimes I’ll laugh at uncomfortable moments (everyone who’s ever been to a Halloween haunted attraction with me knows I giggle maniacally when I’m scared lol) & as a kid it was even worse, laughing when people cried etc. The fact that Azula was only - what? - 5 or 6? 7? idk young - during this scene is easy to overlook because she’s just illustrated her immense intelligence. There’s a reason “gifted kids” are stereotypically socially awkward.
Kids have to learn emotional & social skills at a young age & that gets messed up when intellectual pursuits beyond their developmental stage are pushed. Also, Azula & Zuko’s positions are unique as royals in an imperialistic family. Ursa scolds Azula for violent or cruel behavior & thinks there’s something wrong with her, even though Azula is only acting the way her father encourages her to act. I’ve seen some speculation that Azula maybe didn’t think there was a real possibility that Zuko was in real danger or she’d be more scared. I disagree. She answered Azulon’s questions about the Fire Nation military flawlessly in the scene before this. She’s demonstrated that she understands the royal court with her comments about how Ozai could become Firelord. She’s also shown that she can be casual about death with her lack of reaction to Lu Ten’s death. These aren’t moral condemnations, they’re observations about her behavior.
Tumblr media
“Azula didn’t understand that Zuko might really die” is a fine theory but I think Azula is too smart for that. I also think we have to remember what a master she is of hiding her true emotions behind a mask. She’s so good at it she can even lie to Toph, who can feel when people lie. Azula doesn’t always lie but Azula always keeps her emotions close to her chest, she’s been conditioned to believe she has to. That’s why the breakdown hurts so bad. Years of repressed hurt & fear are spilling out over her broken edges.
Azula understands the questions Azulon asks her, she’s being taught about the Fire Nation & it’s values, she knows what Azulon is capable of doing. I interpret Azula as fully understanding what’s happening. I think that’s why she tries to tease & goad Zuko into running away. It’s often ignored that regardless of how she goes about it, Azula ultimately saves Zuko’s life by talking about what she overheard. I also think she fully understood the potential repercussions. She wasn’t supposed to spy on that conversation & she knew it. She knew she was committing treason by sharing private plans made by the Firelord, let’s give her credit for her intelligence & understanding of politics.
I interpret Azula as having fully understood the situation. However, I don’t think she’s a soulless monster for laughing & teasing Zuko about it, even if it’s completely understandable that Zuko wouldn’t know how to interpret this behavior & in the aftermath, probably considers it a traumatic memory. Even years later, he chants “Azula always lies,” the mantra he said to himself that night, even though Azula wasn’t lying then. I want to be clear that I’m not discounting how traumatic this was for Zuko to hear, or for him to lose his mother & watch Azula act blasé about it afterward (even if we later see that losing Ursa affected Azula too. the emotional distance between the siblings is a tragedy. they could have been there for each other, but their situation prevented it.) Still - back to my original point - Azula isn’t emotionally mature at this point in the story. We learn in “The Beach” that even as a teen she still hasn’t learned how to behave in social settings. Why would she understand as a small child how to convey horrifying information to her brother in a proper way when she wasn’t even equipped to emotionally process what she heard herself?
The tragedy is that after Ursa leaves, the distance between Azula & Zuko grows. I can just picture them both laying in their separate rooms, thinking about that night. Azula knows that Zuko could have died, & it feels like Mom blamed her, & Mom never said goodbye to her & she doesn’t know why. The last interaction they had was Mom scolding her, & Mom always thought she was a monster…. She could become disposable to Dad too, it could happen if she doesn’t keep outdoing Zuko…. She has to always be the best, or she could be treated like Zuko….
And Zuko just keeps hearing that sing song voice in the back of his mind. Azula would have laughed if he died. Azula always hated him, & only cares about outdoing him & Mom is gone & he’s left with Dad, who only ever looks at him with disappointment & disdain… Azula keeps saying “you’ll never catch up” & the mocking hurts so bad… it’s not fair how Azula is so adored & loved & he’s all alone, he has no one… Uncle Iroh is around again, but he’s different after Lu Ten’s passing. quiet. Distant… Zuko just wants to make his father proud but the task feels more impossible every day. Then one day he begs to go into a war meeting, he wants to show that he understands the Fire Nation military. He wants to make his father proud. But what the men are saying is horrible & he just has to speak up….

The recent Lost Children comic (which I enjoyed!) dealt with the fates of a lot of unaccounted-for child sidekicks. Secret is back! The Newsboy Legion is back! Etc.!
But I recently encountered one such character who should have been among that group. What happened to Joshua Terrill, aka Spitfire? He's Ray Terrill's half-brother, thirty years his senior...but he's also only eight. And he completely disappeared in 1996 shortly after being introduced.
Story time!
Joshua was born in 1946 to Langford "Happy" Terrill (the original Ray) and his first wife, Gayle. He inherited his father's light/energy-based powers but with greater intensity and became the Ray's sidekick for a while, using the codename Spitfire.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #18)
He had a lot of power at a very young age and didn't know how to control it. In times of heightened emotion it was quite dangerous. The powers also seem to have affected his aging (perhaps similar to how his father's aging has been slowed/stopped), and he started to mentally regress. By the time he was eight, he had the mentality of a four-year-old.
And then one day he got upset when his father didn't return from a mission in time for his birthday, and he accidentally destroyed the house...and his mother.
Happy's solution to this was to drug Joshua's food, stash him away in a cryogenic chamber buried in the middle of nowhere, and pretend this kid never existed.
Forty-one years later, some guys fool around with the site of the buried chamber, and Joshua, not a day older than in 1954, is on the loose.
We find out that he's got enough control of his powers to use them to convert a truckload of corn into popcorn.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #18)
But he's scared and confused and desperate to find his dad, and unfortunately this results in lashing out with his powers at almost anyone who comes near him, regardless of intention.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quite possibly ends up killing a few people here.
Not that he seems to realize that. He's still a small child who talks to cows.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #19)
At one point, he thinks he's found his dad, but false alarm, it's the villain who's been impersonating Happy for a while (long story).
Tumblr media
Soon it's Christmas. This child is still on his own and without shelter in Colorado in the middle of a snowstorm. His efforts to get Santa's attention fail.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #20)
A couple happen to find him and naturally are concerned. Where is his family?
Tumblr media
He's actually a sweet kid when he doesn't feel threatened.
But Nadine Terrill, his father's second wife (now divorced), isn't too pleased when he shows up. She knows her ex-husband had another son from a previous marriage who was born in the 1940s, but an eight-year-old child claiming to be his? Clearly the product of an affair from when they were still married.
Tumblr media
Now that they have a lead on Happy's whereabouts, Joshua flies them out to Philadelphia, where they hang out at Ray's empty apartment for a while and Joshua spends a lot of his time floating around upside-down because why wouldn't you if you had flight.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #21)
When he finally meets Ray, his initial impression is to attack him, but Ray's not having that.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #22)
But once Joshua knows who this strange young man is (although it's unclear if he has grasped that this is his half-brother), he takes to him immediately.
Tumblr media
And he jumps back into his old role of sidekick when Ray must go and protect his mom.
Tumblr media
He continues to fight when Ray is removed from the equation, but unfortunately...he ends up destroying Nadine's house.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #23)
But ultimately he helps Ray take down the villain.
Tumblr media
And gets ice cream.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #24)
It's been a long, exhausting day. The Terrills stay the night at Nadine's friend's house, and Joshua gets put to bed.
Tumblr media
But he doesn't sleep well.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #27)
And when he wakes up disoriented and terrified from a nightmare...
Tumblr media
His father finally catches up to him, but Joshua mistakes him for the imposter he met earlier.
Tumblr media
(The Ray 1994 #28)
In a state of extreme panic, he runs away.
Tumblr media
Nadine survives the explosion, but her friend does not. Joshua has inadvertently killed again.
Ray goes after him, but Joshua has expended so much energy that his powers give out and he collapses mid-flight into the ocean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is rescued before he can drown, and the next we see him, he is back in bed at Ray's apartment, sleeping peacefully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's the last we ever hear of this child. The series ended with this issue, Ray got regulated to guest appearances and team outings without much (if any) acknowledgement of his personal life, and Joshua was never even mentioned again.
So what happened to him?
Putting him back in the cryogenic chamber shouldn't be an option; not only is it unethical, it did nothing to solve his problem--rather, exacerbated it.
And how much of what we know about his background is true? We only know what Happy tells Nadine about him, and although she has demanded that he tell her the whole truth, he has a history of lying and manipulating, so everything he says is potentially questionable.
What we see of Joshua's behavior does seem to back up the story. He does get overwhelmed by emotion and uses his powers in destructive, sometimes deadly ways. His mentality does indeed seem to be that of a child younger than his physical age. But is he really as hopelessly uncontrollable as his father makes him out to be? Under normal circumstances he seems fine. Whenever he does lash out, his narration reveals that it's not erratic; he's in frequently in circumstances that would terrify any child, and he's trying to protect himself. Within less than a day, he destroyed his house, inadvertently killed his mother (...or did he?), and his father drugged, froze, and abandoned him. That would be incredibly traumatic.
Surely there's a way that his out-of-control powers could be restrained. Earlier in the series, it's shown that Happy has the ability to basically hypnotize Ray into believing he's lost his powers. Why didn't he try that with Joshua, if only as a temporary solution?
Ray's powers are greater than his father's, though, so if anyone could find a way to help Joshua out permanently, it would likely be him. After all, it wouldn't be the first time in this universe that a hero had to straighten out a younger counterpart's unmanageable powers (as Wally did for Bart in 1994).
So the ideal ending would involve not only Joshua learning to better control his powers but also getting the emotional support he needs (which would further help in that direction). Handing him over to the care of his father full-time would be a mistake, but the entire family should get the opportunity to work on rebuilding their relationships.
And with some stabilizing, maybe the Ray and Spitfire could be a thing again. Maybe Joshua, like his brother, could join a team. He's not too far in age from Damian or Jon or Chris.
But we never do get to find out, and since Ray and family have since been rebooted and made almost completely different, it's unlikely Joshua will make an official reappearance.
Doesn't stop me from having questions, though.

Please do tell us more about your ocs Ikki and Ace bc I too have brainrot about them 👀👀👀 (only if you want to of course) -🟡
anon im so sorry about what im going to subject you and many people to (if they read this (or the attempted version 2 that i tried to recall from memory due to me losing this draft originally, neither of which is advised)
***basically i found this draft lost in god knows where?? its the same but it..sounded more coherent than the other one and i just think itd be silly if i just had both left out there...lol..the only thing updated is that i added an extra doodle. everything else is untouched)
um something something heed suspension of disbelief. like ive warned, this is basically something totally made up in my head to the point that it deviates severely from the work's original intentions and such
but siiiiiiince you aaaaasked (cry) and i am currently sick with the flu so literally sick in the head i will do this until i think oh god, i have to be put down and never come back to the internet because i put my shitty yaoi au in here so in detail
we'll start with adjustments to revice's general plot (lol)
so this is an au where for me, george rly goes for the "make the ultimate kamen rider" guy. his father stays forever an asshole dedicated to finding shit about science, and would only create shit like the weekend to clean up his mess, but not because he feels genuine remorse. this (imo) gives george more reason to continue on hating his dad(?), and thinking he's creating something to surpass him.
george's obsession is created by his father neglecting him in his childhood and leaving him with just kamen rider to watch and play with while he worked. george grows up with a growing vengeance to beat his father at his own game i guess. feeds into a potential narrative parallel with olteca? idk
so george sets his sights on potential candidates: igarashi daiji, and kadota hiromi. both seek some sort of..justice or strength, proving one's worth, (till it all goes horribly wrong via canonical events). and of course, the inheritor of revice, ikki comes into play. george gambles on this.
in this version, they also find that ikki is not just a descendant of giff thanks to his father's genes, but giff's target human vessel. the only reason vail hates vice's guts besides wanting to kill genta's family, because he's protected under giff's will.
giff creates a demon, vice, to inherit all of ikki's memories (at least, the painful ones he doesn't want to remember, but it eventually becomes just, everything lol). vice gets a consciouness, ikki's humanity that wants to protect ikki, but ikki wants to throw away his humanity and becomes an empty kind of guy. vice inherits the desires to be boisterous and selfish, instead of somehow put together and reliable, but instead it makes ikki wonder what the hell he wanted to begin with, and desperately fills in the hole by trying to help people via nosiness, etc. hence the whole volcano form convo i think. idr. LOL
so fast forward to the sorta endish of the season, they destroy giffs body, which is perfect so he can be released from his physical form and move on to vice/ikki. george knows all of this information, and decides it's the perfect setup to test ikki's will to become a kamen rider through the wildest hardship or whatever. so george goes and tells everyone that the igarashis are descendants of giff and spreads fear that even though giff is destroyed, this family exists. shit happens.
of course, happy spa's small but passionate loyal clients try to protect the family and such, but then vice becomes a conduit to transferring giff's consciousness into ikki once he loses all his memories, he transforms into his own demon and starts attacking everyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i tried lol) (sneaking in a new image)
giff has a good hold over ikki till- uh oh. huh. the demon you put all of the human memories is goin a lil crazy. vice, fueled by ikki's memories and intense emotions, alongside giff's uncontrollable power, ends up destroying giff (yay) but takes over ikki's psyche as an absolutely uncontrollable beast.
george, seeing this as a failed experiment, uses his backup plan to be the ultimate kr himself as juuga to defeat ikki, becoming a hero for the public watching and cheering him on. just like kamen rider!
except of course, igarashi family, everyone known through the season, the weekend kids, hiromi try to get through to ikki revisiting their beloved memories with him (gl daiji) while the happy spa friends try to hold back the angry mobs.
ikki begins to regain consciousness and wonder if he really was that kind of guy before
Tumblr media
ikki's family is the last to speak to him and of course it's like. fond memories, bad memories, things that they like and hate about him, things that make him him, etc, and give that big ol berserker man a hug.
vice finally speaks up with his piece, revisiting his own individual memories with ikki as his demon, etc.
george is perplexed and livid, but he's not sure why. this would count as a success in his experiment, but not in the way that he thought it would be. the cliches of kr fulfilled(?). and the crowd no longer cheers him on.
ikki regains revice form, no vice because vice has uh. merge merged with him now. fights george, last busybody guy to hit. woooooo ahhh (coughing hacking)
and here comes my oc, post season vice LMFAO. which is just the hbdvd design bc i believe in giving maeda the chance to be just a liddle goth and have a little dangly earring
Tumblr media
post canon vice is pretty much a preservation and a box holding ikki's memories, if ikki fights and forgets, he reminds him. but due to inheriting these memories and merging with ikki's messed up post canon soul, he ends up a lot more subdued as ikki no longer gives a shit about being a loud boy and breaking free. he just doesn't want to be alone. LOL (and in caption note, it's preservation vice and destruction ikki ty sorry. ikki in my brain wants to destroy memories, vice preserves them for him) yay. he switches in as easily as kagerou does with daiji, but doesn't like to make much conversation outside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and FINALLY this is where my other oc (jkjk) ace comes in.
the weird ass movie, revice and geats battle royale whatever, ace uses a desire wish on ikki for him to remember all the battles he's had in place of ikki potentially wishing vice back. (i guess in this au, it'd just be in place of him wishing literally anything better for himself. also vice would absolutely hate that (ace)).
in terms of au material in geats, i believe in evil parents..or more like...morally.....wack ass parents....... like you can't be the goddess of creation that was abused for a silly future man game and not go a little crazy... so to me, the mother that ace seeks is long gone, and when he finds her again before she dies, she tells him they should just fuck up the world (thumbs up) for everything it's done to them. ace is faced with 1) contemplating the human side of him that craved what he believed was family (through keiwa and his sister, the complicated relationship between neon and her family, as well as ikki's) 2) whether he wanted to do anything with his power towards the world because of his mom, what his mom put him through, what the world put them through (hence the tarot card, judgement. the power and the perspective to judge the world?)
Tumblr media
i love the ninetailed fox theme sorry so not only is he a white haired anime boy in god form, BUT A FURRY
so in this perspective, ikki and ace represent opposite sides of like..the demon and angel shared blood with human spectrum, and how they go about the world that way. how they see each other is a weird balance that clashes and also completes each other(?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway that's my spiel because im losing brain as we speak and starting to feel the effects of oh god, who the hell is going to read this. if you made it here, im sorry. uhhhhh i love yaoi............

15x20
And we come to it... The End of Supernatural.
But we’ve got a double feature this time: because I watched 1x20 too. With 15x20 calling back to that ep so specifically, I thought I’d see what the finale looked like in its context.
There’s a lot of talk of how the early vs. later seasons differ visually in terms of lighting, cinematography, etc., but I was also struck in their difference in tone. There’s a sincerity to 1x20, not just in what’s happening but in how the writing takes itself & the situation seriously, while 15x20 is much lighter and humorous, verging into bathos at points. It’s exactly the same as the contemporary MCU/Disney blockbuster humor: never letting the tension build for too long and breaking it was jokes. Maybe I’m just a bit too earnest but this kind of humor rings really hollow to me. It often feels self-defensive, like the writer(s) are hyper aware of their audience & its reaction and so they make fun of themselves before the audience can make fun of them.
I’d forgotten The Twilight Zone reference early in 1x20; love that. All of the John - Sam - Dean family drama is so compelling -- Sam still hotheaded & angry, John caring but not willing to give up his authority, Dean the peacemaker in the middle of it all. (The rest under a cut because it got long.)
DEAN: What happens if you die? Dad, what happens if you die, and we coulda done something about it? You know I been thinking. I ...think maybe Sammy's right about this one. We should do this together. [SAM nods.] DEAN: We're stronger as a family, Dad. We just are. You know it. JOHN: We're running out of time. You do your job and you get out of the area. That's an order.
Kripke’s idea of ‘family as everything’ is the foundation of this ep. It’s also obviously about healing the original family estrangement in Sam leaving and John rejecting him for it--John has to relearn how to “believe” in family again, which first starts to happen when Sam & Dean rush into save him, and then he saves Sam, using a bullet from the Colt to kill Luther holding Sam hostage, even though it means one less chance to get the YED. If, as SW analyzed, Dean takes on John’s narrative role in S4/5 with Sam, then Dean is in this narrative position thru the entire rest of the show. For ex, in Dabb’s seasons, so much of the writing focuses on Dean not “believing” in or resenting/rejecting family, which drives almost all the emotional conflict. And then cue Dean’s heartfelt deathbed speech in 15x20 about how much he loves Sam & thinks Sam is such an amazing guy, right? The ultimate “I believe in family & love you so much” speech. Dean’s speech even parallels what Sam’s son tell him as he’s dying, so framing Dean in a parental role to the end: (”SAM No. / DEAN (softly pleading): Look at me. Look at me. I need... I need... I need you to tell me that it's okay. I need you to tell me... Tell me it's okay. / SAM (through tears) Dean... it's okay. You can go now.” versus “DEAN II: Dad. It's okay. You can go now.”)
With the Colt, what stood out on this watch was how even though it’s a weapon that can “kill anything,” it’s not divine or blessed or anything like that; it was just a gun made by Samuel Colt for ordinary human hunters. Given how fantastical the show gets by the end, the Colt is grounded in a satisfying way. In order to fight creatures stronger than they are, people will make a tool that’ll allow them to overcome all that, just through sheer human ingenuity & stubbornness.
Jenny is the obvious throughline between these two eps, but there’s also John being integral to both (returning in 1x20, Sam & Dean figuring out the case thru his journal in 15x20) and both eps dealing with vampires. In 15x20, the situation is clearly meant to be a mirror reflection of Sam and Dean’s family tragedy: vampires invade a house, kill the father instead of the mother (but leaving her traumatized and unable to speak, literally & metaphorically) and steal the 2 kids away, but ending more happily with Sam & Dean saving the kids. There’s also again shades of sexual violence against children, in the vampires not just killing the kids but keeping them alive for years, both to feed and feed on them. If it’s more alluded to in 15x20, then it’s literal in 1x20, with vampires intertwined with sexual violence all over the ep: Kate & Luther making out / getting ready to have sex while Jenny watches, with Kate then turning Jenny by assaulting her with a kiss (complete w/ incestuous undertones in Luther then saying “Welcome home”); John looming over Kate and Luther like a creepy stalker when they all invade the vampires’s nest; Dean playing bait and drawing the vamps out, with Kate assaulting Dean very similarly to how she did Jenny. The ‘Dean playing bait’ scene was also interesting in that Dean is very much vulnerable (what if Kate had just gone for his neck?) while the masculine violence of the Winchesters is highlighted as well... John & Sam shooting Kate and the other vamp, John coming in with “sweetheart” to Kate when he confronts her, Dean taking Kate off in a bridal carry, a parody of the real thing. They’re both the hunted and hunters.
SAM (crying) Then don't leave me. Don't leave me. I can't do this alone. DEAN Yes, you can. SAM Well, I don't want to. DEAN Hey. I'm not leaving you. I'm gonna be with you... [DEAN is crying as he places his fist over SAM’S heart.] Right here... every day. ... DEAN Goodbye, Sam. Goodbye.
Telling that it was Jackles and Jarpad who added in those callbacks to Sam & Dean’s dialogue in the pilot, not Dabb. Good for them, tho.
I’m surprised I’ve never seen a comparison made between Dean’s death and Jack’s departure in 15x19! If Jack is a Christ figure, then Dean is a messiah figure, and those figures very often die; both Dean and Jack gave up a chance at a normal life to save the world & protect the people they love, Dean as a hunter & Jack as God; they both do the “I’ll still be with you, in your heart” gesture; it ends with both Jack and Dean saying goodbye, and they both then go onto to ascend to Heaven or a heavenly place. People talk about how Jack’s ending is messed up because he’s just a kid with too much responsibility put on his head, but the show idealizes / does the same thing with Dean, in how much it valorizes Dean’s protection of Sam. I think back to Jarpad’s quote talking about the finale that got people in a huff (“It was a success story — it was Dean’s success story,” Padalecki reflects on the “Supernatural” series finale. “This guy gave his life for years and years and years and ultimately gave his life to have his No. 1 on the planet live as normal a life as possible.”) but like? Doesn’t this attitude seem exactly how the show viewed Sam & Dean at this point?
I’ve also seen people talk pretty cynically about Dean’s death and as much as I’m not a fan of Dean dying I also just cannot read it as cynically as some people do. Dean didn’t die because he “couldn’t live a normal life,” he died because the show set up the “Dean = chooses the hunting life, Sam = wants a normal life” framing back in S12, Dabb’s first season, which culminates here in Dabb’s last, with Dean dying on a hunt after saving 2 kids from something horrible, and Sam going on to live without Dean and having a ‘normal’ life, wife, a son, even if he deep down he longs to be with Dean again. If Dean most represents “the family” in the narrative, then of course he couldn’t get a wife and kid like Sam could; that would be Dean choosing to have another family over Sam, and that wouldn’t work with Dean’s narrative role. In S15 too, Dean’s death also fits thematically with the emphasis within the last season on making sacrifices and dying for what you love and the people you saved living on after that sacrifice. Ketch, Rowena, Cas, Jack (sort of), Dean, to name some major ones. There’s also that Sam dying & Dean living on would be a repeat of Swan Song, so I can see why they would’ve wanted to avoid that plot beat because they’d already done it once. If anything, I’d say Dean’s death echoes his one in 3x16: telling Sam to carry on without him, Sam being unable to prevent his death, but this time instead of going to Hell, Dean ends up in Heaven. And Dean gets narratively rewarded with the perfect, best Heaven ever! The one that is stated he deserves!! I just don’t see how that translates into the writers seeing Dean as not normal or having something wrong with him?
OKAY last few things: I actually like the regular “Carry On Wayward Son” and then the cover version, what can I say. Despite ppl saying Dean spent however many odd decades in Heaven waiting for Sam, it’s clearly implied he only waited a short time in Bobby saying “Time up here, it's... it's different,” which is calling back to Hell’s time dilation, Dean’s 40′s years, and his now only spending a few minutes separate from Sam in comparison. And while I 100% understand not liking the finale, it’s kind of fascinating to me that the finale basically framed it as a final, fantastic Happy Ending for Sam & Dean, they are at peace for all eternity, isn’t that so nice, and parts of the fandom somehow read it as a tragic or unhappy ending. It’s just... so clearly not. It is if you wanted to the story to end another way, but c’mon, the story wasn’t going to end another way. It ended as it started, the Epic Love Story of Sam & Dean.

Finally able to organize my thoughts on the blue beetle movie. so here they are:
-I think the concept of a destined chosen hero is antithetical to jaime reyes as a character. khaji da is not some heavensent agent of destiny, they’re a weapon of mass destruction developed by a colonial empire and sent to mass enslave other planets. The reason jaime is blue beetle as opposed to anyone else is mostly chance, and the fact that jaime happened to be the first person khaji da came into contact with that they didn’t find repulsive, hence them “choosing” him
-I like that they live on el paso street, that was cute
-I like that they made jaime’s little sister a cynical pessimist to counteract jaime’s glittering optimism. Also she’s goth a+
-the fact that jaime attended gotham university not only sent me into hysterics but is continuing to haunt me. Jaime reyes gotham u pre law graduate. Whew
-I was really surprised when they announced this movie because Whatever section of the dc company is in charge of greenlighting these movies seem rather attached to gen 1, year 1 origin stories. we’ve had Two (2) movies about year 1 batman in the past decade, not to mention man of steel and the wonder woman movie taking place during ww1 etc. they’re not even touching the gen 2 sidekicks let ALONE gen 3, so when I saw the blue beetle movie was about jaime and not ted kord I was pogging. However, adapting a Generation Three hero’s origin story into a self-contained story that Actively shies away from the context of the wider dcu seems to be an exercise in futility, because when my father and I watched it he came out so confused as to what had happened in that movie that I spent 30 minutes explaining infinite crisis to him in an attempt to make sense of the movie’s allergy to exposition. while I’m not expecting an adaptation of jaime to, like, completely adapt the utter insanity that is infinite crisis, I do think that the way they went about it ultimately harmed the film more than anything else. while a bit more boring, I think yjtv did a better job by just having khaji da break tf out of their cage and latch onto jaime as a means of escape. It makes more sense than couching the whole movie in a really weirdly unsubtle jesus metaphor
-when George lopez said “batman’s a fascist!” I scream laughed
-I liked that jaime spent the whole time haggardly being like NO MURDER while his entire family was so Utterly down for murder. Truly that is the vibe of the reyes family
-anyway the movie did tackle things that comics, I think, would never be able to. discussions of class and race that blunt would get shut down in (modern) comics, so I enjoyed them taking this opportunity to go there. I liked how believably the reyes family acts like a family, from how they smoothly interact with one another, reference things together, reference past events and even have, you know, thoughts and feelings about their place in their family. jaime’s always been an outlier in comics for having a family that isn’t dead, but I think comics will always struggle to portray a family that Feels like a family (because the writers will always be bogged down by portraying people other than the heroes are surface level cardboard cutouts) so having actual actors take that out of their hands was cool
-“it’s like batman’s stuff but shittier” is the greatest thing jaime’s ever almost said
-I didn’t like the romance subplot
-How did they manage to make one of the most batshit, buckwild and whacky origin stories and make it into a cookie-cutter superhero movie with a bland social justice flavoring. Jaime spends half his comic fighting with an alien parasite on his back, getting mindcontrolled by said alien parasite, fighting robots and Going Into Space To Topple An Alien Colonial Empire and this movie was just so. Predictable. yeah ok he’s the chosen one who’s hunted for his chosen status dead dad become one with your destiny beat the bad guy who isn’t bad so he can beat the bad guy who is. Yeah. Ok man

some one day later little things I feel + @mauvecardigans the stuff you wrote on the other post reblog 🥺 all of it made me have an emotion. which is rude, I’m already feeling at least one emotion off the back of yesterday, I’m not ready for more. I haven’t understood the first one yet (we’re as far as “I... sad”)
1. Potter just really had the feeling of a man saying goodbye to his kids – the amount he called Klinger “son,” just over and over again, and he was his best man! The way he teared up over Margaret (I hc she’s his secret favourite, not that the others aren’t great, and he loves them, but Margaret is such an over-eager try-hard perfectionist, and he’s met her father and she imprinted on Potter like a baby duckling who’s excellent at scheduling). The earnest way that Charles speaks of wishing to be able to emulate him, which I didn’t expect to hear him say at all. The salutes!!! -- which in tandem with rewatching s4 again, in the first episode of which he’s not sure about Klinger’s dresses and Klinger generally and Hawkeye talks him over, and he doesn’t want Hawkeye’s antics, but then very quickly becomes intensely charmed and understands almost immediately why the jokes are what they are, and those early episodes of everyone trying to impress him, etc. Especially to Margaret and Charles there was a feeling of how he was a better dad to them than their fathers could ever have been
(Radar is just upsetting because his original father died when he was a baby and then Henry of course… and then his uncle before he comes home... it’s funny because I very much did think Radar left when he should have -- maybe even a little later than he should have, considering how he didn’t get much focus + was simplified a bit in his later seasons, but not having him here saying goodbye did somehow feel like there was someone missing -- and I do think Potter also filled some kind of a space for him that he’s had many mixed versions of at this point.)
2. I called this show Potter’s coda (from the perspective of how much life he’s already led) and since then it’s felt like I’m a dog that’s caught a scent or something. feels right. and the way he rides off one last time on Sophie.
3. thinking once again about Hawkeye and Margaret’s goodbye. thinking eternally about their goodbye. it’s just... the journey those two have been on together and the deep, deep love and crucially respect that has come out of this experience for them. I do think those two are my favourite dynamic, and I’m glad to have gotten this after the later seasons didn’t show them as much together
4. mauvecardigans: “There’s something so chilling about knowing this entire group - a group of people that have meant so much to each other and been so integral to each other’s wellbeing - will never be together again, not really. Reunions will happen, but for one reason or another, the entire group will never be together.”
circling back, I think that may be what struck me about Radar not being there. it was like “oh they’re all saying goodbye, but wait, you all need to say goodbye!” (I feel that way more strongly with Radar than with Henry or Trapper I think because of distance and because Henry did say goodbye to everyone, while Trapper left suddenly of his own volition, rather than wait for Hawkeye -- I say “own volition” I get that the internal feelings of it, the fear that it might not be real or may be revoked, even leaving a kiss to Hawkeye, those are all things to think about, but like... he left as he left, and that was ultimately his choice, much like BJ TRIED TO DO THE SAME FUCKNDKFGKJLDSD
5. I AM STILL THINKING ABOUT BJ DOING THAT! It may seem like I’m yelling in anger, but no, I am yelling in narrative parallels and symbolic resonance and character study! I said that Hawkeye says “I’m never gonna shake you” (words to that effect, I’m still too afraid to actually watch the scene again) and they immediately went “I WISH I KNEW HOW TO QUIT YOU!!!!”
6. mauvecardigans: “Sidney, love him to pieces, is an omen, a guide - his presence indicates an invisible pain, his exit reminds us healing, in spite of everything, is possible” yeah, yeah! love to see him arrive, need to see him go. I actually was reminded that I wrote something about Sidney back when I was watching s6 and I think a lot of it still fits, even as he didn’t have more POV episodes later on (and I think that was a good choice, leave him a little bit symbolic in his presence)
7. also I love that several people have told me that DOS left loretta his phone nr after years of her asking for it, in the front of the elizabeth barrett browning book, and I do choose to give that to charles as something he does for margaret (a sort of charles way of saying “stay in touch, despite the way I act like a feral stray cat sometimes”)
8. tragedy is still... something I’m sitting with. it takes a long time to percolate inside of me before words about tragic narratives can properly form
9. mauvecardigans “And yet they can never go home, either. A part of them will always be gathered at that spot in Korea, running litters and doing surgery until the end of the world” -- I know, I know, it’s a show, it’s fiction, and it’s there to be watched at whatever time one comes into it, but there’s something about how it’s so far behind these actors (and most of them have died) and how they’re such a big part of engaging with the show, even if so much of that is long in the past as well... as well as the feeling about the characters themselves as constantly restarting the process, as if by watching it again I’m winding them up again or something, rather than letting them rest... I feel far too involved in the narrative in some, strange way.
never had that quite like this with anything, and you would’ve thought being raised on star trek and doctor who and tons of books written by authors who would go on to die as I harboured dreams of meeting them (sigh, I’m sure many of us have had that experience) I’d be less... idk. sensitive. to the past. but I’m really not.
the older something is, the more it fundamentally changed something in the telling of stories, the more it feels very alive. can’t read myths without feeling like I’m talking to gods. but again, the difference is, these are all things I’ve known since I was a kid, so they were already in my bones. this is something I’m putting in there now and the process has me -- as I said right at the top of the post -- feeling at least one emotion

This is an opportunity to infodump on whatever you wish
Thank you anon, for letting me infodump about Swag Age because I think it's a musical more people should watch even if you aren't Korean (although that'll also be hard because english translations are hard to come by). So! *cracks knuckles* here we go!
This takes place during the Joseon era of Korea which was when Korea was known as the Nation of Poetry. However, in this nation of poetry, poetry has been banned under threat of death/imprisonment for the past 15 years by the Poetry Minister.
Rebelling against this ban is the revolutionary poetry group Golbindang who wear masks to keep themselves anonymous and are fighting to prevent the complete loss of poetry. But we'll get back to them.
The protagonist of the story is an approximately 18 year old (according to an interview with one of the actors it's never explicitly stated) boy, named Hong Dan, practicing poetry and going around acting like a nobleman. However, this often gets him in hot water with the army (for the poetry) and his fellow townspeople (for the acting like a nobleman). But ultimately, this is also what captures the interest of a girl named Jin. She introduces him (after various shenanigans) to the rest of the Golbindang, which she's a part of! Golbindang is made up of Sibju (the leader), Ho Rosoi (the jokester), Kiseon (the jack of all trades), Sunsu (the guard), and Jin (the tactician). They're following the will of Hong Jamo and fighting for a fair and free world. Sibju then reveals that the Jamo that had raised Dan the past 15 years and died recently was Dan's father and had lied about Dan's orphan status to protect him from Jamo's status as a traitor. With this revelation and a final letter (written on a fan) Dan resolves to follow in his father's footsteps and bring about a fair and just Joseon.
But the Poetry Prime Minister, Song Hongkuk, has other ideas. He has the army threaten anyone who supports Golbindang in an attempt to find and capture the group. But this fails, and eventually the Emperor catches wind and decides to rehost the traditional Joseon Poetry Competition that had been banned 15 years ago. Through this, Golbindang (who took up the alias Suaegu to hide their identity) revealed the stories of the people. The Minister Song found them out really quickly, though, and had them captured. But then Jin's guard Lululala Jono (Jin's Minister Song's daughter btw. Most of Golbindang knew but this is when Dan finds out) frees them.
Dan originally refuses to go with the rest of Golbindang, having felt betrayed for not being told that Jin was actually Minister Song's daughter. But after seeing the atrocities of the army and a talk by Jin about how they aren't as different as they might originally have thought, and that leads to one final stand against Minister Song. With the rest of Golbindang's help he's able to get the Minister captured as a traitor and release the ban.
Summaries aside, there's a lot about this musical that has captured my brain, such as
the message against censorship
the message that people should be allowed to choose their own path in life and not one dictated by those in higher power
the message of equality for all
Hong Dan being a relatable character, often feeling like someone I could easily see myself being friends with
Jin being a strong female character whose arc is just as much about finding her own path in life and sticking to her own decisions as Dan's is.
there being no major plot of romance, and all romance that does exist is either the butt of a joke or someone's backstory
Golbindang being the true definition of found family where no one really falls into the stereotypical family structure: ie this is the dad, this is the mom, etc. Sibju (who is the only person who really fits the "dad" mold) is mostly just the leader due to his age and ties to Jamo (and likely cause he founded the group) and while he also often takes a disciplinary role, he is often just as much the person who needs to be disciplined by the others. If anything, everyone is the child and the only real differentiating factor is the fact some are older than others.
Minister Song feels like a realistic villain who took his perception that the world has gone soft and wants to right it by making Joseon a militaristic country...
the story as a whole just feels really relatable to a modern day audience despite it being set during the Joseon Dynasty because a lot of what the group is facing is what we face today.
So many in-jokes and puns are present, especially during the second half of the musical.
The songs are bangers, mixing the more modern style of hip-hop/pop music with old Korean instruments to create a very interesting soundscape
All of the characters are unique in their own ways and somehow still memorable and not in a way that is confusing
Here're the highlights (each video has 3 songs)

Post-Pre-Reboot: Sherman 'Tank' the Walrus
Tumblr media
This came about as the result of a little thought experiment I had. But first, some context.
Of all the Egg Bosses (and post-Reboot characters in general) Tundra the Walrus is easily one my least favorites. While cruel, monstrous villains are par the course for the Eggman Empire, Tundra somehow managed to be scummier than even the likes of Mordred Hood and Akhlut through a combination of being an abusive parent, an anti-intellectualist, and a backstabbing hypocrite (His "might-makes-right" mentality, willingness to jump ship to the stronger side the moment you show weakness, his cruelty and disdain for Rotor being a "toymaker" despite Eggman being the same thing, etc). TV Tropes even makes it a point to list his replacement of the nobler, braver Sherman Walrus, Rotor's father from the old continuity in his entry under his entry in Nightmare Fuel for the Archie Comics!
Then, I had this weird thought:
What if Tundra came in contact with the Genesis Energy that briefly restored the Freedom Fighters' memories in the first five issues of the reboot? Would he regain his old self's memories? Would the severe difference between the two incarnations of Rotor's dad cause a total personality rewrite instead of a seamless integration? What would Sherman be like if he existed in the Reboot instead?
After that, everything started clicking into place, and I came up with this idea for a Post-Reboot style Sherman:
Despite him being a total scumbag, Tundra has an admittedly cool design, so I knew right away that I wanted to keep that for Post-SGW Sherman. I especially like that RisziArts gave him a different mustache style than his canon self; it's a nice touch. The "Tank" nickname was just something I threw in for fun, and it fit for a powerhouse like Rote's dad.
Personality-wise, I ran into a problem: Sherman was a plot-device rather than character in the Archie comics. He existed to provide some motivation and sympathy for Rotor and only appeared in a single issue, and in a back issue, flashback side-story no less. So, I had to create his personality from scratch. With that in mind, I took a look at Tundra and all the ways he's Rotor's opposite, then tweaked them into traits that made sense for him.
Post-SGW Sherman is essentially a Mobian Ben Grimm meets Sgt. Hatred from the Venture Bros. (minus Sarge's "problem" that he needs to take medicine for - you know the one) with a bit of Homer Simpson and Dragon Ball Z Abridged Nappa thrown in for good measure. He's a boisterous, hot-blooded goofball and kind of a moron (he has average intelligence, but is lacking in common sense), but an all-around jovial and friendly guy you'd wanna have a drink with.
Sherman and Rotor are the quintessential "Jock Dad, Nerd Son" archetype. They don't see eye to eye on a lot of things and have little in the way of common interests. But when the chips are down, they ultimately care about eachother. That said, Sherman really likes to get into the part of playing the "evil, cackling supervillain" (his way of coping), much to his son's embarrassment.
As for how and why Sherman ends up with Eggman, my current head-canon is [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED].
And that's post-Reboot Sherman, hope you all enjoy the pic!
Sherman Walrus is the owned by Ken Penders (as per his lawsuit).
Tundra the Walrus is the owned by Ian Flynn, Archie Comics, and Sega.
Please support the official release and all official Sonic materials.
Original artwork by RisziArts.

yugo ☾★☆☠♒♥☮ since you were goin off the other day!
skjgjkgg sorry for taking 3 million years to answer this i lost the original post 😫
🌙 sleep
he sleeps like this
Tumblr media
★ - sad
ok i had to think abt this and ultimately make stuff up lmao. probably built up a lot of bitterness over not seeing his father for most of his teens. he’s like well whatever i don’t need him!! i can raise myself!! and he sort of shrinks into himself thinking he doesn’t need anyone else (even tho there’s random neighbors and grannies looking out for him bc hello. a child.). carries a bark bark growl growl attitude into his older teens. but when he does find his father (what’s left of him lmfao) that bitterness just melts away. that’s his dad!!! and then, yuji as yugo remembers him is u kno funny energetic etc and ALIVE and whole. so to go starkly from that memory to not just a corpse but the remains of one after being experimented on to death is a lil bit umm mind breaking lol
☠- angry/violent
ok jumping off the traumatizing experience of finding one’s father’s vivisected corpse. he transforms reflexively and goes on a rampage thru the lab he found yuji in. pero ykw they deserve it. KILL KILL BITE BITE MAIM
♒️ - cooking/food
he grew up on microwave food but when he takes in kenji it’s like oh i gotta start eating healthy. for the child. so there’s a lot of experimenting in the beginning and kenji is his taste tester but kenji was raised on lab food so he doesn’t have any standards. but that’s part of how they become close as bros, two kids fucking around in the kitchen lmao. and then alice has an intensive job and uriko is usually in tow so he cooks for them as well. so much of yugo’s personality is wound up in being the strong guy who beats ppl up so he doesn’t otherwise have a soft outlet for expressing his feelings towards his loved ones, but cooking for them makes him feel like he’s taking care of them
♥ - family
wait this isn’t rly hc so much as just. interpretation lmao. he doesn’t have any bio family left but he’s just sort of allowed random ppl to fill in that part of his life. like gado is sort of an uncle/godfather. i think also that mitsuko lectures him, pulls his ear, etc
☮️ - friendship
when kenji reaches able-to-take-care-of-himself age yugo is kind of an empty nester. he realizes that he doesn’t have any hobbies and that he doesn’t know how to connect to ppl his age. but bc of his wolfishness he’s actually quite extroverted and gregarious. so he goes down to the gym and makes friends w a bunch of old guys. they like him bc he’s son-shaped and keeps them on their toes. but soon alice tries to get him to hang out with her normie friends bc otherwise he’d spend all his free time standing around watching construction sites
☆ - happy
the top of his head and under his chin are weak spots. pat for massive damage. i have the mental image of like, early in their relationship, alice calmed him in his wolf form down by doing the whole, tentatively reach out to the snarling monster, and gently stroke its face, breaking the hold bloodlust had on his mind. as such, it became a romantic gesture between them — it seems simple but a simple stroke on the cheek or just having his face held in her hands calms him down a lot. also in his wolf form he is very susceptible to head scritches and will even wag his tail about it. perhaps you can even play him like a bongos?

Characters of Note
Nasrin - HAWKS Supervising Agent
Nasrin acts largely as a mediator between the Specialist (Gifted) Agents and her fellow Supervising Agents. Her innate gregariousness and diplomatic approach have made her well-equipped for reining in the more rebellious and troublesome members of the team by offering counsel and friendship. Her bubbly attitude and boundless optimism also balances the brooding tendencies of Akil and Kamiko.
Tumblr media
Yadon - HAWKS Supervising Agent
Yadon has been known to hold few reservations about riling the tempers of the Specialists. His deep distrust towards all Gifted sometimes paves way for back-handed comments and subtle tension. Yet he is also a man of easy smiles and untouchable pride. Yadon doesn’t budge easily in his set views on the world, but he appreciates anyone willing to indulge him in an argument for merriment’s sake.
Tumblr media
Your Father - Human Mortician . . . and Possibly Other Things
His given name and surname, as well as his parental title (Father, Dad, Papa, etc.) are customizable to accommodate the various cultural origins and personal preference of the MC. In the past, he had been known for his anxious and curious nature. Though he largely despised social settings, time taught him to master the subtle art of being a “social chameleon”: the ability to adapt his external persona to accommodate his present company and his needs from them.
Your mother had been his everything. His strength, his joy, his hope. After your birth, you instantly joined her as the most precious wonders he could ever hope to find in this vast and deadly world. And even as their disagreements as parents brewed with a tension so concerningly strange to him, he never questioned his undying devotion to keeping you both safe and happy. (He did, however, question his ability as a mortal man to provide such safety and happiness to you.)
Following your mother’s murder, your father prioritized his efforts in keeping you hidden from the world. His rattled nerves never quite settled after his loss, and his morals became more ambiguous with time for your sake for he sought to put you above all but his grief. The soft-spoken mortician cursed the world that would take your life for no reason. You, the sole remnants of his heart.
Tumblr media
Your Mother - Gifted Vigilante (Deceased)
Her given name and parental title (Mother, Mom, Mama, etc.) are customizable to accommodate the various cultural origins and personal preference of the MC. Along with her gift, you have inherited an immense likeness to her image that haunts others with her memory.
Daring, passionate, and courageous are the more flattering terms she would use to describe herself. Once a firm believer in the supremacy of the Gifted, her views eventually settled into a fierce determination for their guaranteed rights and protections following her love and marriage to your human father. Though she did eventually come to accept a potential co-existence between the Gifted and humans, she never could quite release her deep hopes for you to surpass all who had possessed your familial gift before you. Her dream had been for you to realize its potential and become the true leader, the ultimate beacon, that your fractured people needed to carve a place for themselves in this world. As she watched you, her precious and unexpected child, embody such a vulnerable innocence in contrast to the world’s hatred for your kind she felt as though her reality had been shaken. Before all else, she fought for you.
She could no longer tolerate a world that would despise you. She could no longer stretch her dwindling patience towards a world that would see you dead.
In her rush to create a haven for you to flourish without fear or shame, she met her early end. A brutal loss her desperation had blinded her from foreseeing.
Prior to her death, she had been deeply attuned to the underground politics of the Gifted in order to best police and protect her kind from the outer world (and each other). She had hoped to undertake you as a protege, to delve you into the world none but your kind would ever witness. After her death, your guardians largely severed their connection to that world that had taken her life.
Tumblr media
Your “Uncle” Fletcher - Former Gifted Vigilante
Ivo Fletcher had been the closest friend your mother ever had, essentially regarded as a brother prior to her death. And though he often rivaled with your father in the past, particularly due to the tension caused by his subdued romantic longing for your mother, her death urged them to settle their greatest differences to better look after you together. Once known for his brash nature and short-temper, Uncle Fletcher has mellowed over the years as exhaustion towards the world has overtaken his embered passion for change.
In his eyes, it is difficult to see you as not just a child anymore. You are young, and he fears the extent you will go to satisfy your ambitions when led by the inevitable follies of that youth. He will not allow you to meet a premature end like your mother. No matter the cost, no matter the sacrifice demanded, he will ensure you live a life long and fulfilled. To have your story meet any other end would be . . . something his heart doesn’t have the words for.
Still, Uncle Fletcher found himself supportive to most anything you put your mind to. And even when he struggled to see reason in your actions, well, he simply swallowed back his complaints whenever it became clear you wouldn’t take them to heart. As long as you’re breathing and smiling (or something close to it) by the day’s end, he’s served his purpose.
Tumblr media
Your Stepmother - Human Author
Antheia Onasis, a world-traveled author from old money, is an old childhood friend and former fiancée to your father prior to his first encounter to your birth mother. Reconnected years after he became a widower, she entered a cordial marriage with him as a friend to assist him in caring for you. As Uncle Fletcher and her new husband worked tirelessly to mislead and deter any that might seek to capture or kill you, she undertook a majority of the child-rearing activities in the day-to-day. Unable to have children of her own, she has been incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help raise you (whether or not you reciprocate her sentiment).
Your stepmother tried to act as a moral compass in your father’s place with her gentle encouragement, though your present actions may stray from her teachings. She was your mother’s opposite in this regard: a woman who preached compassion and mercy above duty and sacrifice. As an advocate for the protection of the Gifted, she hoped to instill within you a positive outlook on your Gift to use, if not as an instrument of civil service, with selfless intentions.
Tumblr media
“Gabriel” - Thulani “Simeon” Mbatha
The childhood friend and sworn brother to Fyodor. Gabriel immigrated to Russia with his grandfather at a young age upon the urging of a local (Gifted) oracle, and there he found the boy that he would follow to death’s doors. The potential that he recognized in his friend for unspeakable things prompted him to undertake a vow of silence to ensure that he could never endanger Fyodor with his then clumsy tongue. Nowadays, he takes solace in his silence when near all things have become too painful to shape into words.
In urban streets, far from their Siberian origins, Fyodor led him to both his greatest rival and the greatest love this world had ever known: Anatoly Arsenyovich Drozdov and Panya Vasiliovna Agapova respectively. His heart aches with their recent loss, shattered and cutting in its unrepaired shards, but he is confident that he shall heal slowly with time. More than ever, he has become overly protective of Fyodor to ensure they are not overcome as they had been then.
As the self-proclaimed guardian to his friend, Gabriel rarely strays from Fyodor’s side (though few may ever realize his presence). He is not one for the public world, much preferring to listen and observe from the shadows rather than engage with his surroundings. A man that likes to ponder by his lonesome, taking solace in the familiar hum that is the distant activity of his loved ones. The joyous chaos that defined his life when it had been Fyodor, Anatoly, Panya, and him has become too bitter in his memories to try and live again. He is tired, yet he will not rest so long as the world continues to try and use Fyodor to its advantage.
Never shall he allow his friend to become a mere pawn again.
Gabriel bears no loyalty to the CARDINALS. Neither does he hold a care for whatever the HAWKS say or do. His sole concern is to protect all he has left to preserve. Act accordingly, and he may come to find you a friend. Threaten that which he loves, and you will face the cruelty he has to offer.
Tumblr media
“Mishka” - A Minor Romance Only Available to Those Locked on Fyodor’s Route
Mishka has little care for the common conventions of the world. One might mistake their general apathy for most things as a cold disdain, but to Mishka this is simply their tendency to be more reserved towards the unknown. They are deeply cautious, oftentimes cynical, and unadmittedly shy in a stranger’s company. Their most notorious quality, however, would be their persisting inability to sense the boundaries of a situation. Mishka has yet to comprehend their own strength and, worst yet, exhibits a stunted form of empathy in the aftermath of their created catastrophes. It would be wise to fear their wrath, if not their very presence.
As a Minor Romance . . .
They are not of your kind. They are not yours, and you are not theirs. But you have dared to steal their proper claim. Dared to bond to the soul they chose as home. Your essence bears the taste of envy, a sweet and poisonous delight. Is that why you are trying to steal the vessel? Do you long for more? Long for power? Or are you unsatisfied with the gift you bear? Fine, do what you shall with the vessel. Love it. Cherish it. Vow yourself to it. Inflict any pain upon it, however, and you shall be rightfully punished. You are not their kind, even if your people delude yourselves into considering this so. But it is beneath their being to demand you serve them as you should. The vessel will see to that.
It is the vessel who loves you. It is the vessel whose heart races to see you, whose fingers twitch to touch you. The vessel is breath-taken by your image. The vessel is soothed by your voice. The vessel weeps for you, and the vessel kills for you. It is the vessel who has tainted them with the aftertaste, the illusion, of affection.
It is through the vessel that they may feel what it is like to be excited by another’s soul. It is through this that they may learn what it means to long for another’s touch. Never had they thought to be overwhelmed by a mere presence or be tamed by a mere whisper. Their kind are not capable of tears on their own, but it is you—no, the vessel—who has compelled them to cry without thought or want. And though the reaping of souls is a trivial matter, it is through the vessel—it is because of you—that the mundane task is made so striking and . . . personal.
They fear . . . Their kind does not know the sensation or meaning of fear but you have made them fear that they are tainted. Not as they are meant to be but ruined in their essence. Yet how can they be ruined . . .
It is expected of their being to be nothing but hopeless dreams. And what dream may be more hopeless than being gifted what the vessel has claimed?
You would not love them even if you could, would you?
Tumblr media
Osvaldo Pacheco Contreras - Watchman
Unbound. Unburdened. Osvaldo has been liberated from his mortal constraints. Like a ghost, he flickers through history as little more than a thought. A glimpse dismissed as illusion. A whisper forgotten as hallucination.
A purposeful man that feigns directionless passivity.
Corrupt. Abandoned. You have stumbled into his design. The pawns had been placed. The players had been sent. Yet you stand with an intention he did not beckon forth. It would be irksome if he were not so intrigued.
Meddle not with what you don’t understand, Blood-Heir.
