i’m no authority on this ofc i haven’t done queer studies but as a french lit graduate who has finally read the brick i must say the homoeroticism is definitely fucking there and it’s important to understand the metaphor of it all likeeee the symbolism with enjolras and grantaire is pretty obvious, the two of them being foils and also pretty obvious symbols themselves, but the homoerotic subtext realllly brings the theme of it all together and it just can’t be ignored from a compared literature point of view if it makes sense???
like nothing i can say will be revolutionary the book is 150 years old and i’m no one (will definitely make a more thorough analysis if someone is curious) but yeah i think hugo probably wanted to play into it more than most readers realize
i will say that enjolras’ smile at the end when they die, them holding hands even, then the way they die, it’s just their arc coming full circle with love and acceptance, it shouldn’t just be taken at face value but really examined up close, from the moment hugo emphasizes how SAFE grantaire was from the guards to the way they die, enjolras standing and grantaire at his feet. wtf man

god i could talk so long about how avatar korra and avatar aang can not be compared.
they had two different journeys, aangs was physical but korras was spiritual. every avatar is the balance of the last one and that’s why you simply just can’t make an accurate comparison between the two!!!!!!
you just can’t compare the struggles between a monk who’s culture was non violence/spiritual and a water bender who grew up in the NEW AGE with no philosophy!!!
think about that, aang was raised in a spiritual and philosophical culture while korra was not. bending and all its subforms have lost their philosophy, it’s now common knowledge. and with the fact that there was such limited access to the type of information she needed to be the avatar, spiritually. she is fully focused and was raised only on the physical parts of being the avatar.
gosh i cant I CAAANNNTTT THEYRE JUST BOTH SO AMAZING AND SHOULDNT BE COMPARED.

Just finished watching the season finale bc we had a blackout when it was released, my sister, a Tech girlie, has done nothing but cry, make the single statement ‘I’m going to bed’ and went to her room to go cry some more

I was sceptical about Whale Weekly because it’s not an epistolary novel the way Dracula is, but now my dash is full of Moby Dick content and I am just delighted

I feel like there’s some very interesting things to be said about the three ta’veren lads’ relationships to responsibly that I’m not articulate enough to satisfactorily say.
Like how they all reject it for most of the series, but in different ways. And how Mat never really fully accepts it like the others, but really spends most of the series taking responsibility for other people’s safety. And how the amount of responsibility Rand takes for people’s deaths is directly tied to his entire character arc. And how unlike the other two Perrin never runs from his responsibility even though it hurts him.

It is late and Christmas Eve, do I have to explain my thoughts about Marjorie by Taylor Swift and Dead Poets Society?
yes, yes I do
okay so Marjorie is such an underrated song and I think that the characters (the other poets) would relate to it after Neil died. Like I know it’s about Taylor’s grandma but if you pick and choose the lines it’ll make sense I promise.
okay stick with me here
Neil took Keating’s lessons the best. He was like the most passionate and just so into the idea and stuff. He was so happy and believing. After he died Todd and the others would probably be like “oh dam he like really knew that stuff how HOW DID HE BELIEVE I WANNA BE LIKE NEIL” wether to remember or just try and “suck the marrow out of life” anyways
this brings me to Marjorie by Taylor swift especially my favourite lyrics
Tumblr media
DO YOU NOT THINK THE OTHER POETS EVER THOUGHT “I SHOULDVE ASKED NEIL HOW TO BE MORE LIKE HIM AND I SHOULDVE ASKED KEATING MORE QUESTIONS AND I SHOULDVE KNOWN MORE”
cuz at the end of the movie the tragic thing is no matter the last scene the characters are still in a sucky situation. Charlie is expelled, Keatibg is gone, Cameron is angry and everyone is mad at him, they’re all still at Walton, and Neil is still well…dead. So thoughts and regrets are just gonna be the mood for a while
You could relate the whole bridge of Marjorie to like them doing things outside and hanging out. The complaining part could be about Todd being like “I complained the whole way there” cuz he’s never hung out with these guys before and never been that reckless so maybe in the beginning he complained. OR ITS CAMERON’S REGRET BECAUSE HE CARED ABOUT THE RULES
don’t even get me started on the chorus and the end like the “your still alive in my head” and the “what died didn’t stay dead” ITS LIKE THEY KEEP HIS IDEAS AND MEMORY ALIVE
Anyways I just got obsessed with both this song and this movie recently and there is not better place to share my thoughts I guess.
