They look like people (2015) is such a great portrayal of psychosis. I cannot speak for every psychotic person, but I do experience delusions of persecution and I sobbed like a child in the end. No, seriously. The ups and downs, the confusion, attempting to trust people and failing every time. It's a horror movie but it's not about people turning into monsters or anything. It's about a person trying to navigate advanced psychosis, getting better and then infinitely worse, trying to stop himself from harming people that he is trying to protect. It's also about hope, respect and friendship and how a good support system can make a tremendous difference. Watch it.
(Disclaimer: I am not saying that every psychotic person is inherently dangerous but people with delusions of persecution often resort to extreme measures. And yes, if you are advocating for mental health, they deserve just as much understanding and compassion.)

Not enough “weird” or unique looking people in media nowadays, I’m tired of generic same face stars, give me someone I can actually pick out of a police lineup, give me someone who actually has distinguishable or unique features, give me someone whose appearance will sear into the inside of my eyelids, give me a little freak

Okay I've seen a lot of horror movies that claim to be slow-burn or ~subtle~ and usually I just think they're boring but They Look Like People (2015) is my new favorite in that category. The minor things they do like fuck with the audio and have characters talk over each other are really effective but unlike other slow-burn horror that depends heavily on atmospheric choices like that, this one is grounded in the story of these two guys and their friendship and I think that really helps. Because it's not really about imposter humans or whatever, it's about these two guys trusting each other. The imposter humans are a means of demonstrating that. Good movie.

any horror movie recommendations? im bored n got nothing better to do so why not
me when anyone wants anything to do with horror
my personal faves r -
incantation - a story about how a mother broke a religious curse and now has to save her daughter ( it’s kinda like found footage if ur into that)
skinamarink - also sort of a found footage, it’s about two kids who wake up to find their dad gone and all exit points of their home are gone
you’ve probably seen this one but hereditary- when their grandmother dies, the entire family finds curses, messages, and secrets , they have to out run their fate before it gets to them
don’t breathe 1 & 2 - a story about a group of home invaders who break into a blind man’s house for a fortune to find out he’s a retired veteran and has a sinister seceret in his basement
they look like people - a story about about a mans down spiral of reality when he suspects the people around him are evil entities

So I just watched They Look Like People (and loved it) and feel like some people missed the intention (or maybe what I took away from it was just different.
My interpretation (spoilers just to be safe):
It's not about "what if what Wyatt is experiencing is real," it's about putting yourself in the shoes of and experiencing the fear and doubts that someone who is having those experiences. When you experience delusions, you can know logically that they are impossible, that they CAN'T be real. But you believe them anyways. It's literally not something you can logic yourself out. You cannot willpower your way out of a delusion.
As the audience, we are not given any evidence that what Wyatt is experiencing is real beyond his own senses. That doesn't make it any less real or any less scary.
This is the only "horror" movie (in quotes because I don't think the director considers it horror, but it gets recommended as horror) with a schizophrenic character where the audience is meant to sympathize with the schizophrenic character. The schizophrenic character is the audience proxy. He's not the villain, he's not the serial killer that has to be stopped before it's too late.
In fact, part of the "horror" is how people treat Wyatt, how they are cruel and saneist to him, how stigma about psychotic disorders further isolates a man who is already suffering and isolating himself.
It is also, ultimately, a movie about love. It is a love story between two best friends, two men who have been trapped by toxic masculinity who are still saved by their love for each other and letting down their walls and their vulnerability.

They Look Like People sketch from today. I watched the film when it came out and it struck a chord with me. Watched it again today and it holds more true now than it did then.
In 2016 I was a junior in highschool. Not thinking much of my mental health. I watched this movie as a horror movie.
Today May 25, 2022, I watched this movie as a person with bipolar disorder. I've not had psychosis to the extent Wyatt does fortunately. I hallucinate. Sometimes I can't sleep because it sounds like im trying to sleep in a room crowded with people. I see the demon that saunters down my hallway. Even if I cant see it I know its there.
Enough of my ramblings. Have my sketch.

Every time I see that G--gle phone photoshop commercial my heart is filled with infinite sadness, like, yeah it's cool you can have a good family photo, it's cool you can do that, but god, there is something to be said for the honesty of a family photo where you're blinking, or crying, or have ugly wrinkles.
What is too unsightly for you? Would you swipe-click-replace out the image of my cousin crying on our Florida trip family reunion photo? Would you remove the plastic snake I have clenched in my grip, which I still have to this day? Would you scoff at the wrinkles around our eyes and the strands of hair on our faces as we squint into the wind, the day before the massive storm? Would I remember it if I didn't have these reminders, if the picture was perfect and clean, all children in a row with perfect gleaming white tombstone tooth smiles? No tears. No plastic snake.
Everyone is beautiful and no one looks genuine.
