Prompt:
It’s not that Jason forgot, per se.
But between smuggling a toddler out of the League of Assassins, trekking halfway across the world, and finding a suitable hiding place that’s also child friendly… well, it kind of slipped his mind that he’s supposed to be… dead.
Something that comes back to bite him in the ass when he takes Dami out for some ice cream and just so happens to run into non other than Brucie-fucking-Wayne
#look I’ve found a new fave trope and it’s Brucie Wayne having to keep up his act while internally LOSING HIS SHIT#Jason isn’t very into the whole revenge thing here#his mind is 85 parts ‘keep Dami safe’ 5 parts ‘kill joker asap’ and 10 parts ‘avoid bats at any cost’#Jason doesn’t know who Damian’s father is#dealer’s choice if Jason establishes himself as Dami’s dad or older brother#his build certainly makes him look old enough#if you don’t look at his baby face lol#Jason runs into Brucie and goes straight into survival mode#Damian who is very observant for a toddler immediately clocks Brucie as THREAT based on Jason’s reaction#Brucie blue screens and desperately tries not to lose Jason in the crowd#jason is absolutely trying to lose Brucie in the crowd#while clutching Damian like his life depends on it#for all he knows it does#the visceral terror that your pseudo dad will take away your little brother/baby#Bruce who just wants to know if he’s hallucinating again: W A I T#jason who is terrified of being put in Arkham for killing people: no FUCKING WAY#hm maybe Jason plays the ‘I’m not Jason’ game again#it’s not gonna hold for long#but Bruce absolutely thinks that Damian is Jason’s bio child for a while and he’s on the WARPATH#Jason was sixteen when he died and never showed any interest in dating so literally every red flag is waving in brucie’s mind simultaneousl#or maybe Jason manages to get away and all Brucie is left with is the memory of his supposedly dead son#running away from him#and clutching a tiny kid#prompts#jason todd#batfamily#Damian wayne#batdad#brucie wayne

"actually if you don't vote for the guy who lied about beheaded babies and is currently funding the genocide that enabled to the tune of $14 billion, YOU are the one who wants a genocide, because it could get even worse for [insert random minority group here later - Editor] in America! if you carry this train of thought through to its only logical conclusion and get mad at me for explicitly saying that hypothetical future American deaths are worse than real current Palestinian deaths, i will start monologuing at you like a YA novel protagonist before linking a barrage of HuffPo and Buzzfeed articles about the five things Biden managed to accomplish in between not saving Roe v Wade and not stopping student loan payments and mishandling covid. i am the mature one here"

i actually think it's pretty funny dc writing dick growing up the son of literally famous, show selling out performers that literally everyone on the planet has heard of and really kind of poor growing up actually because the latter really says a lot of what dc thinks of extremely skilled circus performers and is. a little racist & classist if you think about it. and somehow manages to reflect really poorly on both john and mary grayson and haly's circus.
because i think it's like. they take the roma retcon + itinerant lifestyle + grew up in a rv + circus folk are basically carnival workers who get paid under the table, right? and add that up to = ergo dick grayson must have been very poor growing up despite the fact that. literally everyone on the planet has heard of his super famous parents.
and i'm not just talking modern day, where everyone and their brother seems to have gone to haly's circus (or was there that night). but even in post crisis, people like bonnie's mom were casually name-dropping "oh, like the flying graysons". they were pretty casually known, actually.
like yea, in a lonely place of dying mr. haly mentions that even back then (when they had the flying graysons as an act), the circus was "barely breaking even" but also does this make sense for a circus that would sell out whenever the flying graysons performed. like there's almost a dissonance between how well the circus is always shown to be doing in it's heyday (constant selling out, employing extremely famous acrobats) vs how well they're told to be doing (barely breaking even).
and like. if it is true & they were paid poverty wages despite the fact that they were literally the extremely world-famous headlining act of the circus, then either john and mary are completely incapable of negotiating themselves a fair salary for their skills &/or mr. haly is probably exploiting them.
because like. the flying graysons being a act for haly's circus means they would have to have a contract with the circus for their pay and benefits in return for their act--even in a lonely place of dying the other performers mention their contracts with the circus. because, again, circus performers are skilled workers. so being extremely skilled acrobats who are super famous, john and mary have. a LOT of power on the negotiating table given they're the only three people on the planet that can do a quadruple somersault and other circuses are probably salivating to offer them a lot of money to work for them instead. to buy their world famous act outright would probably cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars to avoid paying them royalities for everytime they performed it. if their act wasn't bought outright for a lot of money then their contract probably stipulates a certain percentage of profit from the shows they sell out as the headlining act OR should be more than enough to cover their yearly expenses, food, gas for their rv, insurance, etc. in fact, they may stipulate certain stipeds for gas and food. they might stipulate the circus cover their life & disability insurance given the inherent danger of their act.
so if they're completely unaware of what they're worth and being underpaid for their skills that are literally selling out shows, then you're implying that they're completely clueless & unable to negotiate a fair price for their skills and mr. haly is taking major advantage of them and dick grayson should tell that man to kick fucking rocks.
or they're just. okay? with being completely and totally underpaid for their skills given they like mr. haly so much?
idk. the more famous dc makes the graysons, the more dissonant this actually gets. like in modern day if they're so famous why don't they also have a monetized youtube of their acts & practices with millions of views. if they're that famous and still poverty level struggling, then why were they incapable of advocating for their worth as the only 3 people who could perform a quadruple somersault. like either the circus was a niche thing that struggled a lot and they shouldn't be famous (tim drake should be their only fan) or they were extremely famous and mary and john grayson. should have probably done decently well advocating for themselves, actually.

I truly do think one of the largest pitfalls among the "media consumption is my passion" crowd is the tendency to treat characters as human beings with agency rather than narrative tools manipulated by the author

the milk carton behind Barnaby's house.
it was added with the last large update, and it Immediately made me lose my mind. it's such a... strange thing to add to the map, which already has Teeny Secrets - along with other choice objects that make me narrow my eyes. but this isn't about them.
The very first thing I thought of when I saw the milk carton was the phrase "no use crying over spilled milk". which, of course, essentially means that there's no point in crying over things you can't change / things already done. There are a couple ways i'm interpreting it with this context
Something is going to happen that Barnaby feels personally responsible for. or is responsible for - either indirectly, or maybe he'll do something terrible. i think it's entirely possible that he might do that possible something for Wally. and again, take this with salt, but Clown has implied through trivia and fun hypotheticals that Barnaby would go to lengths for Wally. and yes, i know. taking evidence from "what would the neighbors do in Among Us" is absurd. IN MY DEFENSE! while the trivia isn't really to be taken seriously, there's always a thought process behind character roles and dynamics and behavior, and that is something that can be (carefully) looked into and applied. like in Among Us, apparently Barnaby would, and i quote, "Barnaby does all the Dirty work if Wally is an Impostor- Anything to help his little Buddy out...". anything to help his little buddy out, huh? like, it's been stated that Barnaby knows things about Wally that no one else does. and it's been mildly implied that he's fairly protective of Wally. and we all know that Wally is getting into some deep shit, and whether he means to or not he's likely gonna fuck everything up for everyone. it's not that big of a leap to speculate that Barnaby might do something drastic/horrible/regret-worthy in Wally's name / for his sake.
2. something terrible is going to happen to Barnaby / directly related to Barnaby, and he's going to be absolutely powerless to do anything about it. though i think that's kind of a given... yeah this section is pretty self explanatory
3. Barnaby is going to go missing. because what used to be on milk cartons? Missing Posters! yes yes i know this one is even more of a reach, since milk cartons didnt have missing posters on them till the 80s, but yk. it's a Thought.
my second thought was "oh ok so when the carton spills, it's curtains for Barnaby." this part of the theory is just me being paranoid that Barnaby is going to wind up kicking the bucket - though i suppose if that were the case, there would be a bucket, not milk. well, if a bucket ever appears, i'm going to start prematurely mourning. Still!
the point is - at some point, that milk is probably gonna spill. it may be just a detail as things get better Worse, or it could be indicative of something terrible happening to / because of Barnaby. the milk spills, Panic Time.
Milk Theory.

Coriolanus Snow and Anakin Skywalker are perfect examples of really interesting characters who had every chance to do the right thing but repeatedly chose wrong even though they were surrounded by good people, all because they had one person whispering in their ear and convincing them to be selfish and to hurt people instead. There is no point where they have to do what they do, it’s their choices that make them compelling.
They’re also both incredibly controlling over the women they claim to love but are quick to try and physically harm them when they realise that they’re actually human beings who will not blindly follow them. It’s very clear they were possessive, not actually in love. To sincerely love is to respect someone’s agency and neither of them were capable of that.
Another trait they both share is that, despite being layered and well written but fundamentally flawed characters who turn to evil by their own free will, if you cast an attractive actor to play them, there are always going to be people who blindly ignore the entire plot just to defend them and justify their actions. Being a victim of abuse or oppression does not excuse you from being a perpetrator.
