It is Monday, and Monday is for books. Look at these beautiful things! They took me five months to make. I tried so many new things in the process and I am extremely proud of them. This is a binding of @racketghost's amazing Good Omens fic Strange Moons (Hi. I hope it's ok I tagged you in this. Your fic has been one of my favorites since I found it in 2019.) The story is a series of short fics (and one long one) that really need no introduction from me. They're set throughout the 20th century, and they are beautiful and sensual and moody and you should definitely read them if you haven't already. This is the longest work I've bound so far, but I was fortunate that the word count on the shorter fics added up to almost exactly the length of the final, longest one, making them the perfect choice for a two-volume set. I tried very hard to get them to be an exact match, and they turned out even better than I pictured.

Individual images of the covers. The titles are done in silver htv over brown faux leather, edged in charcoal bookcloth. The graphics are the same on both, except for the title text, and they have the same image of the reaching hands on the back. All the art assets are from rawpixel, I just flipped and rotated some of them to make the back image.
The cover materials were an interesting challenge. I'd worked with both before and wanted to incorporate them both in the design, but after measuring and checking grain direction I found I didn't have enough of either of them to do a full book, or even a half bind. So they're actually made by affixing the faux leather to the book board, then layering strips of book cloth over the top. The corners are actually mitered at a 45-degree angle. Here's a close-up:

It's two long strips of cloth (spine and fore edge, not mitered) with two short strips (top and bottom, mitered) glued over the top. There was so much measuring, omg. I bought a new tool to make sure I got it right. Hilariously, I still didn't have enough leather and had to order another roll anyway. Also hilariously, I got the idea to do this after seeing an image of a leather-bound book made by a professional that appeared to have the same feature, i.e. multiple materials with an inset and mitered corners. Wow, I said, looking at a video thumbnail, I'm going to do that! So I did, even though I didn't watch the video. Much later, after I watched his tutorial, it was clear that the design was from leather dye and tooling, not the thing that I did at all. But I do like the effect, and now I know it's possible I think it'll be great for using up weird offcuts from making other covers.

Look, spines! With TITLES on them! And LITTLE RIDGES! Both firsts for me. I'm a little obsessed with them. The cricut has opened up entirely new worlds, though I suspect the little silver lines might have been easier to do with a foil pen (which I don't have) than they were with a heat press. I did them by making the cricut cut out several "=" symbols that were the same width as the spine. The raised bands are false bands; I made them by layering little pieces of chipboard on the spine stiffener, then molding the book cloth around them when I covered them. I was worried it wouldn't work, since this is usually done with leather and book cloth is apparently way less stretchy, but it worked fine. Probably because it's a small straight design, no curves or fancy bits. I'd layer the chipboard thicker next time so they stand up higher (this is 2 layers, I'd do 3 in future) but I'm delighted by how this turned out. They look so professional.

The endpapers on both books are a constellation print. I had a really hard time trying to find something to go with the typeset, and the only ones I liked were from an etsy seller who kept selling out of them. I got lucky eventually but it was one of many hassles that befell this project. I also made my own end bands using a tutorial from the Renegade Bindery discord. I had some issues and I didn't quite nail them but I think they're pretty good for a first time (ok, second time, the first one was on a practice text block, but my point stands). I had originally intended this to be a split boards binding, my first time trying that, but when I got the boards glued on I found that they were crooked. Really crooked. Completely misaligned. Much swearing followed this discovery. I ended up having to cut the boards free, cutting the mull and tapes in the process. The mull was easily replaced, but the parts of the tapes that are usually glued to the boards were a lost cause. I reused the boards, but flipped them so the edge with the cut tapes inside is at the fore edge so I could have a cleaner hinge. You can see in the last photo that the cover board is a little wider at the fore edge. On the plus side, there are no tapes to wrinkle my pretty endpapers and it combated the small bit of spine swell I had. On the downside, the hinge has less support and the only thing I learned was How Not To Make A Sewn Boards Binding.

I may have gone a little nuts with the images in this typeset. In my defense they look very pretty. In order, that's the title page, table of contents, section break image (same as the back cover, just tiny), chapter header and ender (each chapter has one on its first and last pages, they just look particularly cool when you can get a full page spread like this), and the image on the last page of the book (same as the cover image, almost). The cover image was also supposed to have little rays coming off its moon like this one does, but the lines proved too thin for the cricut and it ate them. I still like how it looks though. The prose in this story is really rich and I was in the mood for opulence when I did it. I have absolutely no regrets.

Here's a feature that's unique to this typeset. One of the chapters in the second volume has three alternating, interwoven timelines. I read them fine on Ao3 but had trouble following them when I formatted it for printing. Usually I'd use the section break image to denote when there's a scene skip but there are literally dozens in this chapter, like 40-60 breaks over the course of 10 or so pages, and it looked very busy with images in it. So I left them out, made the line skips single instead of double like they are elsewhere in the book, and I color-coded the text instead. One timeline is printed in black, one is dark gray, and one is dark blue. And it's a very surreal chapter, with the characters having some very confusing and conflicting emotions, so I feel like reading multicolored text when you're not expecting it (the rest of the book is all normal black and this bit is near the middle) sort of reflects that unbalanced feeling? I hope so anyway, because I love the way it looks so much.
I learned so many things in the course of making these. I'm absolutely doing all of them again. Part of the reason it took so long was that I wanted it to be perfect, or as near as I could get, and I had to take the time to solve all the puzzles it threw at me. But it stretched my creativity and ingenuity and I could not be more in love with the finished product.

“YN WHAT THE HECK ARE YA WEARIN!?!?” Atsumu screams, “THAT’S ITACHIYAMA’S JACKET!”
You, looking down and shrugging, “yeah it is! Omi gave it to me.”
“Omi as in Sakusa KiyOMI??” Atsumu shouts again
“Do you know any other Omi’s Sumu?” Osamu interrupts
“YN this is a huge betrayal of our trust!” Atsumu bellows as you roll your eyes, trying to ignore him as best you can
That’s a pipe dream Yn let’s be 4 real mkay
“Atsumu will you shut up. I gave Yn my jacket so they didn’t get lost in the crowd,” Sakusa said, interrupting the conversation as Atsumu glared back
“Are you saying we can’t protect our manager?” Atsumu growled back
“I’m saying there’s a lot of people here and Yn could easily get lost,” Sakusa responded
Actually the team thought he had a decent point but they were still mad that Sakusa had put his jacket on you.
“I think we can protect Yn ourselves,” Aran said, removing Sakusa’s jacket and handing it back to him
Sakusa narrows his eyes at the team as you sigh and roll your eyes. Honestly you can’t have anything nice Yn.
“Thanks Omi, I appreciate you lending me your jacket! Can I keep it for after the game?” You inquired, thinking this would fix everything
“YN you can wear my jacket!” Atsumu yells as you smile at him.
“YN is my partner, they will wear my jacket!” Sakusa growls in response

“Ok enough!” Kita finally interjects, “YN can wear Sakusa’s jacket after our match. Now let’s go warm up.”
Sakusa is just smirking at Atsumu as Ginjima tries to hold him back

“Didnt Yn reject you asking them out like 7 times?” He says as Atsumu narrows his eyes
“Actually it was 9,” Suna chimes in

I wanna say starting to write fanfiction again but that has 'just' made my life so much more fun and interesting. It hasn't changed it in the way that I have changed jobs or moved house or anything like that.
The thing that has really changed the way my whole life has turned out was probably my decision to try applying for the job I have right now. It's a dual-study kind of thing and I had tried right out of school and didn't get it. Then I started training as a legal and notary's assistant: shit pay, shit lawyers, shit working hours and just mindnumbingly tedious. Lots of people in my classes at the end of the training tried to get the dual study thing (it's in a similar field but so much more, like if you went from selling pencils to owning the pencil factory). They applied all over Germany in pretty much every city and I was like, you know what, I'll try again too. But only in my home city cause I didn't want to move. And this time I got it (I was the only one even though I had only sent that one application).
And like I said, it was like going from selling the pencils on a street corner to managing the pencil factory. So much better pay, much more independence and best of all, security. I can afford to live comfortably thanks to this job and I'm greatful everyday. Had I not decided to try again, I would probably still live at home because I can't even begin to repeat how SHIT the pay as a legal and notary assistant was

I kid you not, my dreams have always meaning! Not in helping me to make decisions or something like that but my dreams always reflect on my day. For the life of me I can't think of an example right now but f.e. I will see a missing cats poster and read that and then at night I dream about my cat running away and me searching for her. Or I'll read something about a police officer and then I dream about something random with my grandfather who was a police officer once upon a time. Just working through stuff that happened during the day through my dreams at night. The real examples are most of the time much more obscure, sometimes I really have to think about the connection but you get the gist😉

I firmly believe that there is a force of good at work sometimes. Not God or anything, don't really believe in that, but something that keeps things balanced and makes sure that evil never wins too much or too often.
I just watch a lot of crime documentaries and a lot of those truly horrible, evil people get caught because of a super big and unbelievable coincident. Let's take John Wayne Gacy for example. He entered the police radar cause he was the last one seen with the latest victim. True. But they never would have kept suspecting him and kept following and investigating him if it hadn't been for a big coincident. Patrick (I think that was his name) had lent his jacket to his coworker and she was working the photo section of the store and when you collected your photos she would rip some part of the receipt(?) off and throw it away. That day, that one day, she ripped the part of some dudes pictures off and instead of throwing it away, she put it in the jackets pocket. She had never done that before. She couldn't even tell you why she did it. But she did and before Patrick went with Gacy he collected his jacket and guess what the police found in Gacys house when they first searched it? That receipt. Which she recognized and which they could link to those pictures. Which meant that Patrick had definitely been in Gacys house and not days or weeks before he disappeared but exactly on the day!
What are the odds of her, for whatever weird reason, choosing that day to put pretty much trash into the pocket instead of throwing it out?
I have a lot of coincidences like that (a single blade of grass stuck on a shoe, a single drop of blood escaping a cleaning frenzy even though that should be impossible and so on). I really think that sometimes fate or the powers that be or something just give a little push, just tilts the world a tiny bit to the right so that a girl puts something in her pocket instead of throwing it away like she had done a thousand times before, to set some things right and stop a monster.

It was a difficult question. Linda lowered her gaze, considering how to respond to this. It still hurt her — what had happened to her husband, and the fact that she hadn’t helped him. Maybe there wasn’t anything she could’ve done, but she should’ve tried harder… right?
“When he didn’t come home that night, I just figured Joey had roped him into working for him again. Maybe they’d reunited and hung out for the night. I wasn’t overly concerned,” she admitted. “They used to be best friends, after all.”
She sighed. “But when he didn’t return the next day, I got worried. The day after that, I put up missing posters. Called the police. Organized my own search party. I even tried to send some people to the studio, even tried to go there myself, but… I couldn’t get in. And I couldn’t find him.”
“One time, someone had the audacity to tell me he’d left me for another woman.” Linda’s eyes narrowed. “I punched her in the face.”
She let out another sigh. “Anyway, uh… after a few weeks, I lost hope. I wanted to believe he was coming back, but the police told me it was a lost cause. The investigations stopped, the search parties were disbanded despite my protests, and I… I was devastated. Every night, I would sit outside the porch for at least an hour, just hoping he’d come back. And he… he didn’t.”
She breathed out. “Until… one night, he did. I was relieved. I tried not to tell him how hard it was for me… I tried to stay strong, but I think I broke down a little when I saw him. He would remember more than me.” She let out a sad chuckle. “He returned. And I didn’t know what had happened; all I had known was that he’d gone to the studio. He came back, his clothes covered in ink… I knew he’d suffered. I could see it in his eyes. But I didn’t know any of the details.”
“Honestly, though? I figured Joey had something to do with it.”

seeing as it is the spooky season I thought I would ask about the time your OC was the most afraid.
(i always waffle trying to answer these until it's way too late alksdjf;lkh But here we go) Klaus was most afraid when he arrived at New Phyrexia, across a dark, vast sea. He was lost, and couldn't turn back. He found a guide however, and was led through the Nine Layers, for the only way out was through. Down he went, deeper and deeper, past monsters, and Phyrexia's great architects, its decrepit enemies, now imprisoned. When he finally reached the Seedcore, where the path home lay, past the branches of the Realmbreaker, branches strewn with the bodies of those who dared to defy their glorious expansion, among which, he swore he could see himself. He was most afraid to gaze through the Panopticon as he passed by it. He turned it to himself and he remembered what it was doing before he arrived in Phyrexia:
Klaus was most afraid when he landed down on New Phyrexia and was immediately separated from his friends by the Anti-Planeswalker Field around the plane, alone in the Surgical Bays, running for his life, trying to hide from the multitude of eyes that followed him wherever he went. Then when he reached the limit of his foresight, when the only immediate future he could see with his magic was himself in the Phyrexians' clutches. He took the entirety of the dose of Halo he had, but they strapped him down into a pod to begin his compleation.

They pumped him full of oil and inkmoth serum, commandeering his brain for their use. Pulling from it every secret he held for his friends and the planeswalkers trying to invade. Using his magic to try and formulate plans for Phyrexian victory. And while his stolen mind raced to design a Phyrexian future, what little was left to Klaus was capable only of dreaming: Of a journey to escape the world that had already bested him. And Klaus's heart sank into his stomach when he realized his body was going to give at any moment. The resistance the Halo he had taken was fading, and he would either succumb to sickness or be compleated.
He left through the Seedcore and dreamt up an afterlife of islands in an endless ocean, trying to make peace with the inevitable. (He's rescued JUST before it's too late though!)

Needlessly close reading and long commentary on chapter 57 and how the audience actually has an extremely limited view on what Marcille has been like over the course of her life.
I am once again thinking about how pre-dungeon Marcille is so quiet and stoic that she seems like a completely different person. How jarring chapter 57 is for the audience. Like you have Marcille, who has been just the most blindingly expressive person with resting baby face

And then the chapter drops a title page of Marcille hearing from Falin for the first time in four years and it's like.

Who is that. Genuinely. Would you even realize that's Marcille without the context clues?
And then the chapter just keeps coming in with the sucker punches.

We have SEEN Marcille meet strangers. It was never with this understated of a smile.

And then finally. Finally you get to a fully recognizable Marcille when she fucking DIES and comes back to life to geek out about necromancy.

We know she loves magic. We know she loves Falin. So it's not so surprising that she wouldn't be able to keep a mask up when thinking or talking about the things she loves. But why the mask in the first place? Where does it come from? It's tempting to think that, maybe, Falin's departure just hurt her so much that it turned her into a quiet person.
But that's only half true. If you go back, the first instance you see of this incredibly mild personality is actually introduced much earlier, in chapter 17.

What if she was always like that. What if her default after her father died was to hold people at arm's length, to never really emote past being polite and friendly. What if Falin was the first person who was able to bring her out of her shell, and when she left, Marcille just went back to how she was.
And when comparing her detached demeanour with someone else...

It's not exact, but wouldn't you say there's a resemblance? Wouldn't you think she might be trying her best to imitate what she saw of her own mother working as an accomplished mage?
It would certainly explain why she's hiding behind her portrait in her nightmare, at least.

We aren't told that Marcille has been distancing herself from everyone around her using a mature and dignified personality she modelled off her mother. But we sure as hell are shown it, I think.

Early 18th (and late 17th) century fashions are so under-utilized in vampire media and I think it's a damn shame.
I don't actually think I've ever seen a single image of a vampire character in an early 18th century suit. Hardly any movies set in that era either, and hardly any historical costumers who do it. (Even my beloved gay pirate show set in 1717 takes nearly all of its 18th century looks from the second half of the century. Not enough appreciation for baroque fashion!!)
Yes I love late 18th century fashion as much as anyone, and 19th century formal suits are all very well and good, but if you want something that says old, dead, wealthy, and slightly dishevelled, then the 1690's-1730's are where it's at.

There was so much dark velvet, and so many little metallic buttons & buttonholes. Blood red linings were VERY fashionable in this era, no matter what the colour of the rest of the suit was.

The slits on the front of the shirts are super low, they button only at the collar, and it's fashionable to leave most of the waistcoat unbuttoned so the shirt sticks out, as seen in the above portraits.

Waistcoats are very long, coats are very full, and the cuffs are huge. But the sleeves are on the shorter side to show off more of that shirt, and the ruffles if it has them! Creepy undead hands with long nails would sit so nicely under those ruffles.

Mario and Luigi walk in, and immediately the whole room lights up to greet them. Despite everything that follows, one thing is clear: The Mario Brothers are happy to see their family, and the family is happy to see them. 
The whole family confirms that they watched their commercial. Everyone except their mom insists the commercial was a bad idea, but the fact that they all watched it speaks to the fact that there is no indifference regarding Mario and Luigi’s dream. They’re eager to see where this endeavor leads, even if they think it’s going to end in failure. 
The moment Mario and Luigi sit down at the table, their uncles begin laying into them like it’s open season on financially struggling plumbers. Just full blown, no-holds-barred roast mode on their nephews.

Mario is on the defensive, but he doesn’t get angry, he’s just trying to argue his side. Clearly this is typical behavior for Uncle Tony and Uncle Arthur. They’re loud, overly honest, and obnoxiously confident in their opinions. Uncle Arthur, thankfully, has his wife to keep him in check. Uncle Tony, however, who is seated next to poor Luigi, is an absolute menace.
Luigi ignores all the teasing. He is only interested in getting food, but this is not an easy task. Tony’s verbal arguments are all directed at Mario, but Luigi is the one who gets prodded and shoved around, and that makes getting dinner next to impossible.
Luigi attempts to serve himself salad, attempts to ask for a roll, attempts to eat the mushrooms being put on his plate, and at every turn he’s either pushed away or talked over. He is clearly very soft spoken compared to the other men in his family, and never quite had the strength to stand up for himself... after all, everyone means well, they just lack self awareness. It isn’t worth the fight. 
Thankfully, Luigi’s mom comes to the rescue, and puts a bowl of soup in front of her boy. She’s the queen of the caretaker role, making sure all the loose ends are tied up and that everybody eats.

But on the flip side, it’s interesting to note that once the uncles start tearing into Mario, Mario’s Dad serves him up a plate of food. He may have just been serving the person next to him because that was the polite thing to do, but I have a theory...
I think that this wasn’t the first night that Mario and his uncles went at each other. I think Mario’s Dad read the room, and figured that if Mario was going to spend dinner playing defense, he should at least remember to eat while doing so.
It also speaks volumes that Mario’s Dad doesn’t voice his disapproval until Mario asks for his opinion. Before then he avoids the subject and lets everyone else do the talking, but so long as he’s being questioned directly, he can’t help but be honest.

“I think... you’re nuts. You don’t quit a steady job for some crazy dream.” This sounds like a voice of experience. Mario’s Dad has the figure of someone who has worked physical labor for a good portion of his life (look the size of those arms). He may have had dreams of his own when he was younger, but he had a wife and kids to worry about, and family took priority. 
Speaking of family taking priority: “... and the worst part? You’re bringing your brother down with you.” That settles it. The conversation has gone from a casual roast session to dead serious. The entire room falls quiet as Mario puts down his fork and storms off. 
“What’d I say?” Everybody at the table (except the niece, she’s long since checked out) gives Mario’s Dad different versions of the look™. Uncle Tony and Uncle Arthur have the same “Jesus Christ bro, you didn’t have to go there” expression, and Luigi just looks hurt on Mario’s behalf. His Dad, however, is just confused.  
He didn’t get the gravity of what he said. His relationship with his own brothers– loudmouthed schmucks who call their own shots – is completely alien to what Luigi and Mario have. He probably knows Mario is protective of Luigi, but he doesn’t realize the depth of responsibility Mario feels for him. Anyone can see that Luigi is loyal to his brother, but Mario alone knows how loyal he is, and the implication that he’s betraying that loyalty is intensely painful.

I doubt Uncle Arthur and Uncle Tony truly relate to Mario and Luigi’s relationship either, but they’ve probably teased Mario enough to understand one thing: bringing Luigi into it is a line you do not cross.
Conclusion:
There is a lot of love in the Mario family.
Uncle Tony and Uncle Arthur are definitely the most insufferable of the bunch, but there is no malice in their teasing. While they are brash and overbearing, it’s all in good fun, and they get visibly uncomfortable when things go too far and someone actually ends up hurt. 
Luigi seems to take after his mother; kind, nonconfrontational, and happily invested in a supporting role. While his Mom cares for and assists the family, Luigi cares for and assists his brother, both emotionally and in his business ventures.
Mario, in the meantime, takes after his Dad, who appears to be the oldest of the three brothers. He doesn’t always think before speaking, but he isn’t constantly running his mouth like Arthur or Tony, and acts with the gravity of someone who bears a lot of responsibility. He doesn’t quite “get” his sons, but he knows enough to see that Luigi follows his brother everywhere, and Mario does not always think before jumping into things. Despite what Mario may believe, his Dad doesn’t see him as a “joke” so much as he sees him as an impulsive young man who doesn’t grasp the consequences of his actions. But Mario does understand the consequences of his actions, he just dreams big, and... thanks to Luigi... actually has the support he needs to pursue those dreams.
