So the first book I'm gonna recommend is Soteria by Loren Mosher and Voyce Hendrix. It's about the development of a home/intentional community for people with schizophrenia/psychosis. This home was very pro-autonomy, many workers had psychosis themselves, and they did use meds, but it was always the resident's choice and usually not the first line of treatment, as they found that psychosis often resolved on its own within a few weeks. Some of the methods used at Soteria were a little... wacky, being the 70s, but all in all it was very successful. There are now Soteria Houses all over the world.
Another one is Healing: Our Path From Mental Illness to Mental Health by Thomas Insel, MD. It's written by the former director of NIMH, and while I don't agree with every one of his takes, there is a great chapter about the Clubhouse Model, another peer support model created by a bunch of ex patients, by and for people with mental illness. People in the clubhouse are Members, not patients. They are assisted with vocational goals, food, etc, and most importantly, given community. It's a really interesting paradigm and there are hundreds of clubhouses all over the world now.
The Voices Within by Charles Fernyhough is a bit dry IMO, but it goes over the research behind voice-hearing and goes into the Hearing Voices Movement - another, you guessed it, peer support movement for voice hearers and other folks who have experiences not aligned with consensus reality i.e. psychosis.
Some others I haven't read yet are Geel Revisited after Centuries of Rehabilitation by Eugeen Roosens, and On Our Own: Patient Controlled Alternatives to the Mental Health System by Judi Chamberlin.
I'm also gonna rec a bunch of podcasts.
Heart Forward: Conversations from the Heart has a ton of awesome episodes about the US mental health system and alternatives to it. They have lovely episodes about peer respite and Trieste. It's such a compassionate and solution-focused podcast with a diverse amount of topics, I love it.
Patricia Deegan: Personal Medicine is a great one about Dr. Deegan's life and the Commonground Software she developed to help aid in joint decision-making with patients and providers, where patients have a solid say in their treatment. (I've listened to a ton of interviews with Dr. Deegan and she is an amazing, inspiring individual)
A Place of Safety? is hosted by an Italian psychiatrist who worked in Trieste (an Italian city with world-renowned mental healthcare) and he talks about a lot of problems with the NHS and how it relates to Trieste.
Alita Taylor - Open Dialogue is an episode about a highly successful mode of treatment in Western Lapland for people with psychosis and other mental illness. Here's a documentary I just found about the practice, haven't watched it yet but it looks cool.
Mad in America also has some interesting podcasts about many of these topics

The University of Wisconsin removed a 42-ton boulder from its Madison campus Friday after complaints from students of color who called the rock a symbol of racism.
Chamberlin Rock, which had sat on Observatory Point since 1925, was named after Thomas Chamberlin, a geologist and former university president who served from 1887 to 1892.
A 1925 Wisconsin State Journal article used the n-word as part of a nickname for the giant boulder.
The Wisconsin Black Student Union last summer called for the rock to be removed from campus as one of a series of demands it said were aimed at seeking justice for Black students. The campaign came in the wake of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the union said in a statement posted on Instagram Friday.
“It was very meaningful for me to be there and to see the process all the way through to the end,” senior Nalah McWhorter said in a university news release. McWhorter, who was the president of the Wisconsin Black Student Union for the past academic year, was there when the boulder was removed Friday.
“It was about a year ago that we released our demands and met with the chancellor and explained to her why those demands meant so much to us,” she said. “It was a powerful moment today to see this demand come full circle.”
The Native American student organization Wunk Sheek partnered with the Wisconsin Black Student Union in the rock removal effort, the university said. The boulder sat on ancestral Ho-Chunk land.
The university had to get permission from the Wisconsin Historical Society to remove the boulder, as it sat within the area of a Native American burial mound, according to the university. The rock was not sitting on top of a burial site.
The removal of the rock was approved by UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank in January.
“It took courage and commitment for the Wisconsin Black Student Union to bring this issue forward and to influence change alongside UW’s Wunk Sheek student leaders,” Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Lori Reesor said in a news release.
“In the midst of demands for justice following George Floyd’s murder last summer, the students wanted change on campus and they worked hard to see this through. While the decision required compromise, I’m proud of the student leaders and the collaboration it took to get here.”
UW student and activist Ayomi Obuseh told CNN affiliate WISC on Friday that removing the rock meant a lot to her and others who fought for its removal. “It’s showing that our hard work isn’t going to waste, that if we keep pushing forward, change can come we’re seeing that with events like today,” she said.
A crew worked for four hours to remove the boulder using a large crane, the university said. An archeologist was on site while workers “laid ground mats to minimize any soil disturbance or compaction during the work,” the university said.
The boulder is a large example of a rare, pre-Cambrian era glacial erratic, which may be more than two billion years old, the university said. A glacial erratic is a large rock that was moved by a glacier and left behind when the glacier moved on. The erratic is made of a different rock type than is usually found in the area.
The plaque honoring Chamberlin has been removed. A new plaque for the geologist will be placed on Chamberlin Hall.
The chancellor’s office is using private donations to pay the $50,000 price tag for the rock’s removal, the university said. It’s being moved to university-owned land near Lake Kegonsa, southeast of Madison.
Gary Brown, director of campus planning and landscape architecture, shepherded the search for the rock’s new home. “Moving the rock to this remote site prevents further harm to our community while preserving the rock’s educational and research value for current and future scholars,” Brown said in a news release. ______________________

The pendulum has started to move back the other direction, it's getting easier to see it happening too with the different groups that aren't getting catered to the way they had been because certain elements of those various communities pushed and pushed and pushed.

What will be fun is, something from 2018 or maybe earlier that I remember, couple of cops got removed from the force because of 'racially insensitive posts' one white one black both used the same word. Black woman's was from when she was 15 and it was song lyrics iirc, sticks with me because the circumstances of that one were really just stupid but also funny with people trying to defend her because 'it's different when we do it'
this too, let's keep, this is fun, let's keep this kind of equality going, make it so everyone is guilty.
Blow this shit into the stratosphere, from a sociological standpoint, scorched earth all the way until people stop being such whiny jackasses that a geological wonder has to be moved because someone a century ago used a word that was 100% normal to use at the time to describe it.
purity culture will devour itself, and the people that used it as a weapon will be the final casualties of it.
While those of us that just did our best to be good people will sit back and enjoy a moment of schadenfreude before extending a helping hand.

Reverend Michael Dowd discusses his journey on collapse with Prof Bendell and guests
Michael Dowd is known today for his leadership in the realm of “post-doom," which his website defines as: "A fierce and fearless reverence for life and expansive gratitude — even in the midst of abrupt climate mayhem and the runaway collapse of societal harmony, the health of the biosphere, and business as usual."
“Post doom, no gloom," Dowd suggests, is the stage of the grief cycle beyond mere "acceptance." Three years after posting on youtube his first "postdoom conversation" (with Shaun Chamberlin), the site now offers a total of 85 — including a conversation with me in March 2020. Michael has also posted more than a dozen of his own, information-dense videos to serve as a crash course for understanding our global predicament, with special attention to "ecological overshoot, the already decades-long collapse of thermo-industrial civilization, and how it is still possible to live life fully and love the life you live."
Dowd's personal journey is from Roman Catholic upbringing, to evangelical student, to liberal protestant minister, and now his own brand of “post-doom pastor". His mentors include Thomas Berry (1914–2009), whose inspirational writings on the evolutionary epic turned Dowd into a religious naturalist in 1988, followed by Dowd's first book in 1991, Earthspirit: A Handbook for Nurturing an Ecological Christianity. In 2015, Dowd became an acolyte of the originator of environmental sociology — a mentor he would never meet. Two weeks after William Catton died, Michael encountered Catton's 1980 book on a recommendation by John Michael Greer. Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change, is the book Dowd credits for his shift away from climate activism into the final stages of the grief cycle, culminating in, what he calls, “post doom, no gloom collapse trust and love-in-action".

1. How Dowd sees collapse, ecocide, and possible NTHE as “religious failure”.
2. How he shifted from evolutionary evangelism into his “post doom, no gloom” work.
In addition, towards the end there is a discussion on the role of activism, and the focus of such.

Weekly World News Studios, the entertainment arm of the Weekly World News tabloid universe, is in the midst of principal photography on The Zombie Wedding, its first feature film, just wrapped Principal Photography  in Vineland, NJ. The Zombie Wedding, written by Greg D’Alessandro, Chief Creative Officer of Weekly World News Studios, was originally launched as an interactive theater event in New York. Joe Corcoan (the original Producer of Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding) produced the theatrical event and is also a producer on the film. The Zombie Wedding  is the first ever wedding of a human bride and a zombie groom.  Directed by Micah Khan (Safe House), the film follows the story of a young couple in Vineland, NJ during the zombie apocalypse, who decide to go ahead with their wedding, even though it seems like an impossibility to pull it off. The humans turn out to be more difficult than the zombies and the ceremony takes a turn for the weird when the Zombies become brain deprived. In the end the wedding delivers a universal message of acceptance, love and understanding.
"As a huge fan of zombies, aliens, Bigfoots and cryptids, I’m ecstatic to direct The Zombie Wedding and bring the Weekly World News universe’s first film to audiences. Greg’s script immerses you in a wacky, absurdist wedding gone wrong. This “ZomCom” is a comedy/horror/romance with original music throughout.  The Zombie Wedding is about zombies, but it has a strong heart and a message of universal acceptance, peace and understanding. Original music produced/recorded by Jean-Paul Bourelly, including a new version of Nile Rodgers' Le Freak.
The town of Vineland, Cumberland County, The NJ Film Commission, Weekly World News Studios and outside investors provided needed funding and support to bring the film to fruition. Weekly World News Studios received a 99-year lease for a production building with a soundstage in Vineland for film, television, podcast and other work intended to stimulate the local economy.
“Thomas Edison made New Jersey a pioneering film center in the early 1900’s. The state, county and Vineland community are building on that legacy to support this film and those that follow,” said Greg D’Alessandro , WWN Studios’ Chief Creative Officer.

Chamberlin recounts an encounter she had with Princess Grace while she was in Iceland, there to see the artificial eruption of a geyser in Geysir. Chamberlin says that she saw the princess without her staff, reporters, or photographers surrounding her and muses that this would never be the case for a celebrity in the United States.

After radium's revelations, Jeans explained that the message of physics was one "of responsibility, because we are drawing plans and laying foundations for a longer future than we can well imagine".
In September 1928, these new responsibilities to humanity's deep future were presciently articulated by the geologist Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin, two months before he died.
When a journalist interviewed him in his Chicago study, Chamberlin gave a crinkled smile and said he was "a declared believer in large opportunity" for humanity.
Chamberlin pointed to the fact that humanity had only just discovered the "enormous energies" corked up in atoms. "So I think we are really just in the beginning of things, just beginning to learn how to think". Our species is like an infant, he continued. "From the standpoint of the Earth, I am an advocate of a great future".

All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. Wobbly Interview: Going for Happy

Thurston Moore Ensemble/Negativland band member Jon Leidecker has been releasing electronic music under the moniker Wobbly for over two decades now. In Chicago experimental label Hausu Mountain, he seems to have found kindred spirits, matching his far out idiosyncrasies. 2019′s Monitress and its follow-up, Popular Monitress, which came out earlier this month, are albums about and by machines, as Leidecker ran his music into pitch trackers and synth apps on his phones and tablets, embracing the errors and randomness that were produced along the way. While the source material on Monitress was mostly improvised, the songs on Popular Monitress are more structured and composed, resulting in songs like “Authenticated Krell”, which follows a comparatively clean synth arpeggio before being enveloped by texture, or “Lent Foot”, where the various instruments trail each other. It’s remarkable just how familiar certain sounds are even if not traditionally instrumental ones, like the typewriter clacks of “Illiac Ergodos 7!” or the zooming notes of the thumping title track. Blurring the lines between what’s instrument and what’s not, and even further, what’s composed music and what’s not, Popular Monitress is a defining statement for both Leidecker and Hausu.
I was able to ask Leidecker about various songs on the album and their inspirations. Read his answers below!
Since I Left You: You chose to write more structured songs this time around before running them through the pitch tracker. Do those nuggets of recognizable structures make the final product all the more disorienting?
Jon Leidecker: Hopefully! On both albums, the main thing is keeping the focus on just how live those pitch trackers are. It’s Monitress as long as you can hear how they’re listening. For years, it was strictly a piece for live performance--I needed to be improvising myself, and able to respond instantly, to really underline just how spontaneous the machine responses are. So the first record tried to keep more of that sense of flow. Large stretches of it are simply baked down from stereo recordings of concerts & radio performances of it. Overdubbing more layers of trackers seemed legal, as long all the voices were following that one original sound.
Of course, when you play a tune, something composed or even quantized, it definitely becomes easier to hear what they’re doing. The exact same code running on each phone will respond in very different ways to the same source audio, and you get a chorus of individual voices. They play a lot of wrong notes, but oddly, if you feed the trackers lots of consonant, major chords, it stops being dissonance, and you can tell they’re going for happy. You hear these weird things, trying to sing in unison, and..the result is just pure delight. Weirdly emotional! What’s a mistake? What’s music?
SILY: How did you come up with the song titles? For instance, is there anything particularly Appalachian about "Appalachian Gendy"?
JL: They’re mostly mashed up references to landmark works in the field of generative & algorithmic composition, from the 50’s up to the early 90’s. The recent push of stories on AI musical tools seems to be about automation and labor-saving, but the field of how to develop tools for more creative ends goes back all the way to Bebe and Louis Barron going to the Macy Conferences on Cybernetics and designing their first self-oscillating feedback circuit.
So while my tracks aren’t really in the musical style of the works they reference--something like  “Appalachian Gendy”, which sprung up a fantasy Spiegel/Xenakis tribute, got paired to that stompdown track, and once it did, I added a solo on iGendyn.
SILY: To what extent is your music here inspired by the inner workings of the brain?
JL: Once you get a grip on just how simply neurons and synapses interact, how reassuringly physical thinking is, the electronic music I’ve always found most inspiring often involve feedback systems, self-playing devices, generative music, things that learn rather than settle. Music that helps you model thought. The whole East Coast/West Coast 60’s divide in synth design boiled down to Moog reducing your options until you could easily dial in what you already know you want, and Buchla designing uncertainty machines to be networked together until they approach the complexity of an unknown brain.
SILY: "Synaptic Padberg" and "Every Piano" have moments of recognizable instruments as opposed to alien instruments (strings and piano, respectively). Was that just a product of the errors/randomness of the music-making, or purposeful?
JL: It's supposed to sound orchestral, so I hit my Mellotron and Chamberlin apps pretty hard with this piece. Not like anything remains plausibly real once they're getting hammered by the trackers. That is a real grand piano, however: me playing the tune at SnowGhost Music in Montana. Brett Allen deserves an engineering credit, but I also wanted the first listen to make you wonder.
SILY: There's almost a funky rhythm to "Motown Electronium". Do you envision folks dancing to this record?
JL: Would have been plain wrong to put that title on an unworthy beat. What would a room full of people dancing to this even be like? Maybe in Baltimore.
SILY: Do you think "Training Lullaby" is what a computer trying to write a lullaby would sound like?
JL: Not that relaxing, is it? That’s ten seconds pulled from a five minute live improvisation, just a little burst of fury in the middle. Which I’ve heard enough now that I can sing along to it; so now, for me, it is calming.
I finally had to admit to myself that I’m a fan of the OpenAI Jukebox stuff. It’s right at that stage where their results are still primitive enough to remain a little mysterious. All the context and relationships intrinsic to what humans call music is irrelevant to those GANs. They don’t need culture to make music, they just need waveforms. What does it tell us that simple pattern analysis and brute number crunching on a large enough data set can produce those sounds? They’re training us. I have twelve hours of their Soundcloud dump ripped to my phone, and I play it a lot, though I wouldn’t play it for anyone under four. Can definitely sing along to some of the weirder ones by now.
SILY: How did you approach the order of tracks on the record? I'm struck by, for instance, the chaos of "Grossi Polyphony" following the comparative lull of "Every Piano".
JL: Just trying to show the range, and keep the surprises coming. Perpetual variety becomes monotony so quickly, so there is a very careful balancing act to play between shorter and longer tracks. I like a record where on first listen, any new section that begins, you feel like there are no guarantees how long it’ll last, eight seconds or eight minutes. Even things that sound like they should be songs: no guarantees. I still remember the first time I heard The Faust Tapes as a teenager.
SILY: Did you actually use musical dice to write "Wurfelspiel"?
JL: “Wurfelspiel” is just name-dropping Mozart’s generative piece--again, a real piano, but no musical dice involved.
SILY: The beats towards the end of the album--the pseudo hip-hop of "Cope By Design", techno of "Dusthorn Sawpipe", krautrock of "Help Desk"--seem to me to be far more propulsive than anything else here. Do you see a connection between those tracks?
JL: The album hits you with all these miniatures in the middle to keep things moving, and those three are the last little barrage of them before the shift into the final stretch with the longer, more hypnotic pieces. Can be tough to sequence an album when you’ve got so many short tracks, but it’s also total freedom.

SILY: How did you like getting the Hausu Mountain album art treatment?
JL: Totally family. All the Monitress packaging has always been iPhone panorama mode artifacts, visual glitches not entirely unlike what my phone’s trackers do to what they hear. I gave one of those images to [Hausu Mountain co-founder Max Allison] to work with the cover of the first Monitress, and he sent back this image, saying, “Here’s the initial stage: Your photo reduced to color blocks I’ll carefully render out later.” So when the second hyper-detailed one came back in a more proper Hausu style, they already seemed like a sequence, and this second one was already in place, so it all clicked. Any version of Monitress, the music is different, but it’s always the same piece. I’m really happy they asked me for something. [Label co-founder Doug Kaplan] and Max are just coming from the good place.
SILY: Are you doing any live streams or socially distant shows any time soon?
JL: Multi-location live streams are a blast. The time modulation inherent in all streaming is deeply psychedelic. The kind of listening you have to do when you know that the relationship of sounds together in time is different for each musician involved? I’m learning utterly new tricks, and it’s astonishing just how live the result is. I sat in on a live stream with Thurston Moore Group a few months ago, the four of them in London, and me hooked up to an amp not far from where I normally am when I play with them. And everyone agreed: It felt like I was there, right up until the instant I quit the app.
I’ve been pre-recording some home live sets for Hausu, Curious Music and High Zero Foundation. Negativland is putting together an hour long performance with Sue-C for the Ann Arbor Film Festival in late March. I finished an album mostly recorded outdoors with my old friend Cheryl E. Leonard for Gilgongo, and we’re going to try to a few outdoor concerts, too.
SILY: What else are you currently working on/what's next?
JL: The second album with Sagan, with Blevin Blectum & J Lesser, is coming out in late April. That one took 14 years to finish. There’s a trio record with Thomas Dimuzio and Anla Courtis coming out on Oscarson. Doing a revision of the last episode of my podcast on sampling music, Variations, to incorporate that OpenAI music. Some Negativland releases tying together the last two albums. There are about four of five other albums that might be done, though it takes time to be sure.
SILY: Anything you've been listening to, reading, or watching lately?
JL: This month has been Maryanne Amacher’s collected writings, Keeping Together in Time by William H. McNeill, Ministry For The Future by Kim Stanley Robinson, important even with happy ending. Interview with Karl Friston - Of Woodlice And Men.  Listening to a lot of “Blue” Gene Tyranny, Xenakis & Lang Elliott, and last week every Ghédalia Tazartès album in reverse chronological order. I don’t care what anybody says: That guy’s immortal.
SILY: Anything I didn't ask about you want to say?
