So I have no idea what’s going on w/ this Sweden thing, but, like, it’s bizarre how none of the discourse I’m seeing seems to comment on how there is a super big difference between just not giving a guest food and making that guest wait in your room while you eat.
Like, it’s totally reasonable to me that, if you have the cultural expectation that your guest is not expecting to eat at your house and will be able to eat at home, you won’t feel the need to feed your guest. Because they’re not over to your house for a meal. But, in that reddit screenshot I see, like, yeah that is super bizarre. If you’re not gonna feed your guest, if your guest isn’t over for dinner, when you’re gonna have dinner you send them home. Especially if they’re a child, who might not be as aware that they should head home in time for dinner.
People are v. much equating the two things, and condemning both, when, IMO, only one is really, universally condemnable, while the other can be reasonable assuming different cultural expectations.

I love that we're getting focus on Chris Rodriguez early in the TV show, so that we have time to get invested in him before he a) betrays the camp and b) is driven so insane that only Dionysus can cure him. Knowing him beforehand will also make his relationship with Clarrisse, friendship and romance, feel more interesting.
What other cool, fun, not-heartbreaking characters will the show give more attention and depth? Silena Beauregarde? Charlie Beckendorf? Micheal Yew? Castor and Pollux? I can't wait!

Actually….re: the whole we have never gotten a glimpse ever of past crocodile thing….would be SO funny if crocodile’s backstory was just every strawhat’s combined in succession but like the wario bad ending version “a man took me and my brother in when we were extremely small children and THEN sold us out to pirates when he didnt have enough protection money who forced ys to work to buy our way out of slavery THEN my sister pushed me down the stairs and THEN she died and THEN i was taken in by a fishwoman and her apprentice. And THEN she framed me for pirate conspiracy and turned me into the marines—“ etc. etc.
Y'know, I know you're joking, just doing a silly little funny and all
But unironically, on a thematic level this could very well be true
Like One Piece's long running themes include rejection, loss, loneliness, either believing yourself to be unlovable and/or hating yourself while loving others and what all these things can drive a person to do (among many other things)
And these narrative elements come up so often you could make a little bingo card of them and have a fun little game to see how many pop up for each Strawhat and their backstories (Sanji and Robin being the most extreme examples in some ways).
But the thing is that with the Strawhats, most of them manage to find a way to heal through all that trauma either through their mentors, their friends/family, the Strawhats and/or Luffy specifically. They all found a place to call home through Luffy
But Crocodile never did. He doesn't have a place to call home, people to call a family. He's still alone
So like, while Croc's backstory probably isn't all the Strawhats mashed together literally, on that thematic level? Actually, yeah, probably, especially If Crocodad Real. He could just turn out to be an amalgamation of all the Strawhats' trauma combined but with the specific twist he never had anyone come save him from it, what any of the Strawhats could've turned out like had they never met Luffy and went off the deep end

sometimes a piece of queer media is very obviously cheap and also bad and outdated in ways that aren't even particularly interesting, but it's just so obviously from The Before Times that it's painfully difficult not to be charmed by it anyway

the longer i sit with it the more it really gets me how nobody ever really mentions obito and rin before obito's reveal in shippuden. kakashi vaguely mentions his old friends and i think other characters allude to the tragedy of kakashi's past but rin and obito themselves are lost to time. something about that is so fucking haunting and so gutting. you would think it would be a pretty big deal that two kids from the same class died within a year of each other, but the nine tails attack probably wiped so much clean that nobody could really carry the grief... still, when we see their class in flashbacks, we recognise almost everyone else, so... there's something really sad and hopeless about their absence...
there's a lot a LOT to say about it from a lot of different angles and i don't really feel like going into meta posting territory i just have big feelings about it you know? and to me i guess obito encapsulates a lot of the anger. for the people who get left behind and forgotten. and that can mean a lot of things

WHAT R UR THOUGHTS ON BUDDY DADDIES EPISODE 8 🙏
I THINK IT WAS OUTSTANDING
First off, from the very first scene with Miri asking Rei where he's going and then saying but his home is here, and he says "THAT'S TRUE". AS TRUE AS HOW MUCH I CRIED UPON HEARING THAT
I think this episode was a great continuation from last episode's Kazuki-focused perspective, where Kazuki accepted to move on and essentially to live in the present from now on, the present that includes Miri and Rei. And now we got to follow Rei trying to find his place and accepting that his heart belongs with the little Kazuki & Miri family that he has little by little become more a part of than he realises.
I think the episode did a great job portraying how conflicted Rei is as he stands in-between having to continue his family business and having found a new home, which he might not necessarily feel like he belongs to (yet), but which he wants to belong to. And it's the way he did not outright say this, but what he does say is that there is something he also wants to protect, in direct parallel to his former mentor who was fighting to protect his significant other!!!
I also love how Rei's journey in this episode didn't end on some super optimistic final note (which last episode kind of did with Kazuki, the sun breaking out when he comes to his realisation and the colourful flowers and everything) but rather showing how Rei has simply taken the first small steps towards the future he wants, and sometimes that's enough.
Like, he's brooding and contemplating his identity and place in the world when Kazuki calls and he just lets it ring, but he picks it up in the end. Kazuki comes and he doesn't want to get in the car, but he does. We get to see their first meetings and how Kazuki took care of him, and even back then it was just a small step Rei took - he let Kazuki help. Rei asks if they can really change, and Kazuki doesn't know - but he took the step to ask, and Kazuki answered honestly. And that's already a change, this decision of theirs to step by step try to do the right thing so that they can live their lives the way they want, together with Miri. And in this episode it culminated in Rei smiling at sleepy Miri and the birthday table prepared by Kazuki, and that's enough for now.
Idk idk just think this series does such a wonderful job in showing the character's personal journeys and the difficulties of not just their jobs and lifestyles but also, very obviously, of two men raising a child together, and it does this in such a magnificent way with the perfect balance between optimistic and realistic. This episode was just another part of the wonderful whole, and it stands out so well on its own while still being such an important turning point in our main characters' story as a whole!
Also that ending scene?????? i won't survive the angst of the next episodes

Sooooo, does Sleep represent an old coping mechanism that Vessel is ready to let go of maybe?? I feel like something is about to change. Maybe ‘the end’, maybe not. Maybe, the end of sleep token and the birth of something new.

I was wondering, do you have any thoughts on functional neurological disorder?
Oh I have a LOT of thoughts about FND. It would be very very long to be detailed about it so the TL;DR is that there are already conditions that were thought to be symptoms of conversion disorder (FND's old name) that turned out to be their own separate disorders (eg, fibromyalgia). I think it is pretty lazy science (and also very very lazy practice) for a doctor to see a bunch of symptoms and declare that because You Personally couldn't figure out the cause that it must therefore be psychological.
FND is essentially a catchall diagnosis even at the best of times, for "physical symptoms that cannot be explained." At the worst of times doctors use it as an excuse to punt a patient into therapy and effectively wipe their hands clean of a "difficult" case. As a very blatant example, there is already Medical Discourse about people with Long COVID symptoms getting diagnosed with FND.
I DO think that psychosomatic symptoms and physical symptoms caused by neurological disorders are an important topic and this is NOT to say FND doesn't exist At All. But I do think FND is majorly overdiagnosed in people that have conditions that Could be explained by something else but were met with a doctor that didn't care or was too frustrated by the various symptoms to look further. I hope that more of the field accepts the neurological side of FND and that more research is done into the neurological aspects of FND because I am...not really convinced that it is One single disorder. The symptom set still looks pretty incoherent to be one single thing, and the fact that two separate disorders are listed as a Symptom of FND is kind of insane to me.

I’m so sorry you activated my peter griffin joke explainer button
Basically the whole “husband” thing is that Kuro refers to Keito as “danna”, which is a very hard to directly translate japanese word. The meaning Kuro is probably implying is that “danna” can mean “boss”, and it’s a bit of an old fashioned word to use (think of a henchman in a mafia talking to their boss, that’s the vibe they’re going for). Because of Kuro’s general ex-delinquency status, him calling his unit leader “boss” or “boss Hasumi” makes sense.
However the elephant in the room and the joke that is entirely missed if you translate the word is that “danna” is also sometimes a word that wives will use to address their husbands. Multiple characters have canonically commented on the fact Kuro calls Keito this, and the double meaning. The official English version also decided danna was too confusing and got rid of it entirely, but this leads to characters’ lines commenting on danna being replaced with “he talks to you very intimately” or “he talks to you like you’re married” which is debatably even funnier
I think I'm in love with you now. Like in an aromantic way but still. Do you have any more paragraphs?

Details: Phosa & Linast
Mundane video technology hits something not unlike an uncanny valley for Phosa & Linast on two fronts:
1) Their spacial awareness is intense and encompasses the electromagnetic field around them, so trying to process 2D images as representations of 3D objects & space was a learning curve for them. Even after they learned the trick of it, it’s still more like viewing an autostereogram than anything natural or automatic. (They have to trick themselves into perceiving it as looking at something that is very far away and outside of themselves, even as it's (usually) radiating from inside their range of perception.)
2) They don't have a brain that smooths a rapid sequence of images into a perception of smooth motion for them, and while their conscious processing speed isn't precise or rapid enough for them to truly discern the actual movement of light through space (unless working with large enough distances), they can still sense it to some degree. Between those two factors, it's like touching a vibrating surface; they sure as heck couldn't count the individual jerks, but they can feel that something about the motion isn’t smooth.
Some of these factors were mitigated during that human incident, and it went a long way towards helping them figure out how to interpret 2D images the way most sighted humans do.

This song makes me feral plz help—
It feels like being three-years-old at daycare and dressing up as Sleeping Beauty for “Halloween Week” and putting puffy stickers of pumpkins and bats everywhere (and then getting in trouble for putting stickers on the tables and not pieces of colorful construction paper). It feels like my mom putting my hair in pigtails and smiling at me when I vecro-ed my shoes all by myself and was a “big girl” who remembered to put on a coat during the chilly month of October.
It also makes me think about something my girlfriend said to me and it has stuck with me ever since she said it. She once said that I am boring and peaceful, but not in a bad-boring way. I’m boring and peaceful like little kids leaning on each other and drawing with chalk. It makes me think of warm, tight hugs.
This song is just so bittersweet and makes me think of childlike innocence, peace, and soft love in all its forms.

? Olive has the same meow for "please come pet me while i eat" and "please come here and play with me" now, which only developed after i bought her a new toy (quickly became her new favorite) which is interesting. maybe this is a general meow for "pay attention to me" now .. she no longer really meows for being pet while she eats anymore after buying this toy for them both, for some reason, which is good (that was a REALLY bad habit of hers ive been trying to wean her off of)
